The Role of Teachers as Nation Builders

A teacher plays a significant role in building the nation. He influences a child and brings him up as a talented person. There is an important role of teacher for brightening up the future of the country through the process of education. It is the teacher who puts all the youth on to the path of progress. The talented youth are the future of the nation. The good schooling with worthy teachers phenomenalizes the career of the students, that helps in rising them rise and become the true citizens of the country.

The child starts developing mentally as well as physically only after going to school. He watches the activities of his teacher and follows them. The teacher organizes many activities in the school like prayer, physical training, music, dance, debate, lectures, arts and crafts, variety show, cultural programmes, writing and other competitions, sports and so on. These activities influence the child in the real sense which helps in building up his personality. It is the teacher who shows dreams to a child for his bright future.

Military activities are very important for a youth which a teacher executes through NCC. It keeps the students mentally alert and physically fit. There are so many adventurous activities which are facilitated to the students through NCC. Horse riding, para jumping, swimming, crossing of obstacles, wall climbing, rope crawling, warfare activities and firing with modernized weapons are a few examples which make a youth capable and bold for performing the work in an enterprising manner. All the activities during military training set example of discipline, punctuality, dress, comradeship, good behaviour and so on. These influence the students and give positive impact in their minds.

The teacher treats all the students like his own children. He rewards the students for good work and at the same time he punishes for faults with an intention of improving the students.

Those who invented new things for the mankind were the students of yesterday. We are enjoying life due to their inventions. There would surely have been the role and contribution of teacher in educating, guiding and making them comfortable in research work right from beginning which would have facilitated them in emerging as renowned inventors. Similarly, a teacher develops a child and makes him capable through his teaching ability to work in other fields. It is the teacher who makes a student capable up to that extent that he can do better for the nation and mankind.

A child may be in nursery classes or he may be doing higher studies, there is an important and constructive role of a teacher towards a child. A teacher takes interest in teaching the students from their basic to higher education with the dreams that his students would do the best in their life. There are many teachers who possess extraordinary talent. They are assets of the nation. People follow them and succeed in their lives. A professor of a technical institute and an instructor of research organisation have a big role in producing capable engineers, technicians and scientists who meet the requirement of modern time, not only of the country, but of the whole world. It is a virtual effect of our good education that 40% software professionals, 15% engineers, 5% doctors, 10% management qualified persons and many good scientists are working outside the country and brightening the name of the nation.

India was ruled by the foreigners for about 300 years. They kept our society backward and illiterate. Their system of education was merely theoretical which was useful only for office work. India progressed in the field of education, science and technology only after its independence. Our country has several reputed schools, colleges, institutes, research centres, vocational and technical colleges which are giving very useful academic and technical education not only to the students of India, but to a good number of students from foreign countries including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Foreign students are taking admission in these institutes for better studies. Our IITs and IIMs are worldwide famous. A number of students passing out from these institutes are securing good jobs within and outside the country. These institutes are having highly qualified and renowned teachers, who are fulfilling the requirement of the country and the world. It was a matter of pride to learn that almost forty per cent of the students of IIT and IIM are being picked up directly by the reputed foreign companies and these students are getting handsome salaries and good working facilities over there.

Tremendous changes have overtaken India in the course of last 58 years since its independence. India is a vast country and its major profession is agriculture. There had been a green revolution in this field. It is because of advance education towards agricultural system which took place in our country. The application of new technology, effective performance of our agricultural and research institutions in developing the quality of seeds, chemical fertilizers and insecticides have changed the total scenario of agricultural production. We are today self-sufficient in food grain. In fact, we are exporting a good quantity and earning handsome foreign currency out of it. India has also progressed in other fields by virtue of technological advancement and modernisation. There has been impressive industrial development in the country because of improvement in the technical education that produced an adequate numbers of trained manpower for taking care of the needs of modernized industries. The area of emerging technologies such as micro-electronics, education technology, informatics, telematics, robotics, water resource management, energy studies are receiving positive result, which all is the outcome of improved educational standard in the country.

India is emerging as an economic force in the world. It has a nuclear capability which the whole world recognizes today. It is moving very fast in the fields of science, technology including information technology, foreign trades, medical research, technical education and quality control which have made India capable for accelerating global competition. A tangible portion of credit goes to our teaching professionals for their contribution. By virtue of their talented and dedicated efforts, we could bring about revolution in the field of modern education, which made India emerge in the world order.

It will be necessary to make the teaching ,profession more attractive for ensuring more competency and professionalism. Potential teachers can give better shape through their worthiness. This community always contributed and served the nation well. Their importance has increased more in this age when competition is be-coming more tough day-by-day and the world is moving towards globalization for many important things.

This should not be the case and teachers ought to be well trained and respected to have a bigger impact on students and young adults. Citizens build a nation, but there cannot be active citizens in the society if they are not properly molded from an early age, as parents and teachers or educators fulfill this role.

A good education system builds good teachers and learners, while each nation requires innovative leaders and relevant education. Now more than ever before knowledge societies make a difference in building a nation teachers are not merely transmitters of knowledge, but also supporters of innovative thinking and competence to meet today’s and future challenges. Young learners eventually encounter challenging moments as they grow older, and school is one of the places where they learn to navigate unknown territories. “Teacher is a maker of man. He is foundation of all Education, and thus of the whole civilization of mankind, present and future. No nation reconstruction is possible without the active cooperation of the teacher.” - John Adams Education is the ultimate realm of the Homosapiens. It is a process aimed at socialized and humanizing individual citizen through their life from birth till death. It is institutionalized and formal for a specific period but lifelong and suited to ones environment, ability, interest, aspiration, aptitude etc. and carried on preferably outside the institutional premises through life nonformally and informally and more significant and rewarding. Education is a process of enlightenment and empowerment of the individual for achievement of better and high quality of life. The Education Commission (1964-66) has emphatically opined that “The quality and competence and character of teachers to be the most significant factor influencing the quality of education and its contribution to National development.” A nation is built by its citizens, citizens are moulded by teachers and teachers are made by teacher-educators. Chanakya has rightly stated, “Teacher is the maker of nation” So for the development of the country, it is very important to have good teachers and good teachers can be produced only if we have a good system of teacher education and dedicated and efficient teacher-educators. The teacher can be rightly called a nation builder. Teachers through their perseverance love and sacrifices have shown us the right path in which great men have built our nation. It is our dear teachers who mould our character, our personality and show us the right direction which leads us to our final destination. Flourishing national development and a society truly prosperous with knowledge all begins from its teachers. While the role of knowledge and a skilled society with visions and aspirations in the success of a nation cannot be stressed enough, it should also be remembered that knowledge cannot be acquired if it is not sought and received through the help of the teacher. This is why everyone should put efforts into seeking as much knowledge as possible, and appreciate the teacher's importance in guiding us and the generations to come, to become knowledgeable and morally upright people .Knowledge received without a teacher's guidance can be compared to a blind man walking without his stick. Because of this, teachers need to have a high level of commitment towards their duties and responsibilities which have been entrusted to them. The teacher is a judge who gives marks and ratings. He differentiates children on the basis of their intellectual and often social skills in preparation for the social and occupational roles which they eventually play. He does this by recommending promotions and demotions within the school, nominating children to take certain examinations and counseling children and their parents with regard to appropriate school courses, and employment possibilities. The teacher is a representative of the society who inculcates moral precepts. In the development of a country, great attention has to be paid to education and learning, as well as good morals, and nobody is more suited to assist in this process than the humble teacher. Without teachers, both knowledge and morals would suffer. The role of the teacher is a multi-faceted one comprising academic, pedagogical and social roles. Academic roles comprise teaching, counseling and supervisory roles while pedagogical roles include instructional, evaluation and facilitating roles. As a facilitator of learning, the teacher is involved in motivating pupils to learn, maintaining control in the classroom and the school in general, and creating a conducive environment for learning to take place. Social roles of the teacher includes among others socializing roles which is preparing pupils to participate in the way of life of the society; others include reference roles, detective roles, parent surrogate (or substitute parent), confidants and affectionate roles. No other personality can have an influence more profound than that of a teacher. Students are deeply affected by the teacher's love and affection, his character, his competence, and his moral commitment. A popular teacher becomes a model for his students. The students try to follow their teacher in his manners, customs, etiquette, style of conversation and his get up. He is their ideal. He can lead them anywhere. During their early education, the students tend to determine their aims in life and their future plans, in consultation with their teachers. Therefore, a corrupt and decadent class of teachers can harm a nation more seriously than a class of corrupt and perverted judiciary, army, police, bureaucracy, politicians or technocrats. A corrupt and incompetent teacher is not only a bad individual, but also the harbinger of a corrupt and incompetent generation. A nation with corrupt teachers is a nation at risk; every coming day announces the advent of its approaching destruction. Teachers therefore, have to play a cardinal role in the building up of the character of the next generation. It is a fact that a civilization cannot rise out of a skeleton of mere ideas and abstract concepts. Civilization finds a concrete shape in the practical behaviour of a nation, based on these principles and concepts. Once the practical aspect is gone, the civilization also disappears and can only be studied through its remnants preserved in museums and chronicles. This necessitates the provision of a learning atmosphere throbbing with life in our educational institutions through the presence of the teacher, with a view to infuse confidence in our students and to enable them to be proud of their culture, to respect their national character and national emblems, and to ornament themselves with societal conduct and morals. They should stand firm on the centuries old foundations of their cultural tradition and at the same time should establish standards of excellence in their academic performance. The essence of the teacher as a nation builder cannot be over-emphasized. Good teachers need to be themselves constantly seeking knowledge, be of good character, have high motivation and be creative, innovative and effective in the teaching strategies. The good deeds of teachers are great; because of them, we will grow to become knowledgeable people who will be of use to society, religion and our nation and country.

Education is the key to successful or unsuccessful development of any nation. Rao (2008) noted that education gives the unity and solidarity of all existence, works for the happiness and welfare of all beings, and frees from disputations and contradictions, upholding the vision of harmony and tolerance. Based on this, there is need for quality teachers through which educational standards can be raised for effective manpower development and building of the nation. Teachers constitute not only a vital input to education, but also a major drive in the production process and in the determination of the output (Oyewole, 2008). The report of the Baguada Seminar (NERC, 1980) stated that, teachers are the main determinant of quality in education. If they are apathetic, uncommitted, uninspired, lazy, unmotivated, immoral, antisocial, the whole nation is doomed. The developmental status of China, Japan and Malaysia were as a result of creativity and invention in schools.

Analysis of Policy Implementation of Teacher Professional Competency Standards in Palopo City, the type of qualitative research through phenomenology approaches, regardless of the results of the investigation indicates that the teacher as a professional educator is the person responsible for the education of learners both at school and outside a school to develop their own physical and spiritual. Therefore, the element of professionalism, personality, and sociality becomes something essential to possess and adhere to a teacher, the school as a social institution serves to ensure the survival of the young generation of a nation.Education that takes place both in school, family and the community at its core to divert and develop the culture so that the life of prosperous society following the ideals of the nation. Education has undertaken by the profession of teachers, as professional educators will necessarily form a whole person both outwardly and inwardly.

In order to increase the role of the teacher in the teaching-learning process and student learning outcomes, the teacher is expected to be able to create an effective learning environment and be able to manage the classroom. Because class is a learning environment and is an aspect of the school environment that needs to be organized. Undoubtedly, the teacher plays a fundamental and central role in the life of the child and in the future of the Ummah in general. He provides him with science, knowledge, morals, behaviour, belief and ambition as they spend together almost eight hours a day full of activity, vitality and vigour. These hours are longer than those the child spends with his parents and relatives. Accordingly, the teacher holds the position of the fundamental educator, the first teacher and the central actor in the life and upbringing of the child. If the teacher is good, the child and the society will be definitely good, because the “industry” of the educated, responsible and believing person is the cornerstone of the edification of society, civilization, culture and the future. The teacher is therefore really a prophet as said the prince of poets Ahmed Shawqi (1): Rise in reverence for the teacher The teacher is almost like a prophet, Do you know any more honourable and venerable person than The one who builds up and brings up spirits and minds? Praise be to you my God, the best teacher Who taught with the pen the first centuries, You brought this mind out of its darkness And guided it to the path of enlightenment, And marked it in teacher touch Sometimes rusty, sometimes acute To overcome the several challenges facing it now and in the future and to guarantee its continuity as an active and interactive civilization and culture, the Arab Islamic world should reconsider its educational paradigm, especially its three main elements: the teacher, the learner and the curriculum, with special attention to the teacher, who is the driving force of the educational system in its totality. It is over the time of the “teacher-lion” of whose roar children were afraid and the violent fear of whom seized them when he showed up in the classroom or in the street. With this type of traditional teacher, the educational strategy was based on overpowering and despotic authority and unfair parenthood, while providing a huge bulk of unpractical information to the child, encouraging him to memorize them and then reciting them as a proof that he had learned them, whereas he had not understood them and had not benefited therefore from their content. One of the causes of the failure of this educational system throughout history is that the accumulation of information for the child in this traditional, authoritarian and non-interactive environment led to the production of cognition “clichés” instead of producing knowledge in the true meaning. This led the Arab Islamic world to lag behind the progress of civilization due to the scientific and technological backwardness and made of it a mere consumer of immediately available technology without playing any role in its production. Effective education is associated more with the psychological characteristics of the teacher than with his cognitive characteristics. Purposeful interaction influences despotic authority and aims at developing the personality of the teacher through eradicating his educational and psychological illiteracy so that he becomes a “knowledge facilitator” instead of becoming an “information provider”. The learner can receive today all the information he wants through the internet, the mass media and television as well as through the other technological means available in the age of scientific influx and digital revolution. He remains, nonetheless, in need of a teacher to accompany him in the learning process and facilitate for him the extraction of scientific and functional knowledge from the huge bulk of information he gets inside and outside the school. The teacher of the future is required to face the educational challenges with determination, firmness and professionalism. He should also face the stakes of information influx with perseverance, wisdom and rationality, through lifelong continuing training “the teacher’s lifelong learning” to preserve his “teaching fitness”. He is further required to have appropriate capabilities that enable him to adjust to the educational new developments, keep abreast of the age and improve his teaching means and methods. The present paper aims at studying thoroughly the teacher of the future and discovering his professional obligations, knowledge rights, and ways to reconsider his training so that he meets the knowledge needs of his age and becomes a main actor in the process of sustainable development.

Teaching, as a profession, has professional ethics arranged in the teacher’s code of ethics. The code of ethics is a reference for teachers in carrying out their teaching assignments in class. Teachers’ teaching performance is the teachers’ achievements in planning, implementing, and evaluating learning activities. Ttheir study uses a quantitative approach. The variables studied were professional ethics (X) and teachers’ teaching performance (Y). The instrument used to measure the two variables was a questionnaire. The research respondents were 20 teachers of Junior High School in An Nur Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. To test the research hypothesis Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used. Hypothesis test results concluded that: there is a positive relationship between professional ethics (X) and teaching performance (Y) at Junior High School in An Nur Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia, with a correlation coefficient of 0.498.

The nation will no longer be able to progress and the population will be sick. Here are a few characteristics of the roles that our teachers play every single day-

Making the children ready for a challenging life – it starts at a very early age, the teachers take the kids away from their parents for a few hours and teach them in a total different environment. They try and make the environment as friendly as possible, but it is still different from the environment at home. Knowingly or unknowingly, teachers prepare the kids for unknown environment which they might have to face in their lives.

Literacy and wisdom – The teachers not only make the child literate so that he/she can earn enough to have a normal lifestyle, they also provide words of wisdom every day which shape the personality of the child. Many children are influenced by their teachers more than the parents. A teacher is mostly selfless and believes in dissipating whatever information he/she can to make the kid wiser than yesterday.

A friend, philosopher and guide – Today we can see that teachers have moved on from the basic image of a strict teacher, they have become much more for their students. They provide a friendly shoulder to cry on when the kid is in a problem, they tell about the philosophies of life so that the child could take lessons and apply to his/her own life and they guide the child to follow the right path. The teachers have the courage to push the kid to do what they want to, even if it has never been done before.

Well-wishers – No other job makes a person worried if a child’s parent is divorced, a drunk or a wife abuser. Teachers are the ones who have full knowledge of the child’s life, the environment back home, his mindset and his capabilities. They always try and strike a balance between all of these things and make sure that the kid’s future doesn’t get affected in a bad way.

Nation builder – A nation comprises of the children way more than adults. The children are the future and the teachers are the ones who are getting them ready for their task. With optimum education, wisdom, exposure and resources, the teachers are building the nation for tomorrow brick by brick and the foundation is so solid that the nation will only grow upwards.

Teaching as a profession is probably the most challenging because it combines all the other professions in order to help a child grow. One has to have good communication skills, managerial skills, reading and writing skills, storytelling skills, everything. The teachers have selflessly and courageously chosen the path where they will always be working for the mankind and for its good. Not everybody has the heart to do it. The leaders of today are getting the leaders of tomorrow ready.

Education has long been acknowledged as the foundation of progress, development , and social change . In India, a country with a rich historical heritage and a swiftly changing socio-economic landscape , the significance of education in determining its future is particularly profound.

India's tradition of learning dates back to ancient times, with institutions like Takshashila and Nalanda serving as early examples of organized education . These centers of learning attracted scholars from across Asia and were renowned for their diverse curricula, which included subjects ranging from mathematics and astronomy to philosophy and literature . The emphasis on holistic education laid the groundwork for a society that valued knowledge and intellectual growth.

During the medieval period, the advent of Islamic rule introduced new dimensions to Indian education. Madrasas and Maktabs emerged as prominent centers of learning, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of knowledge. The Mughal era , particularly under Akbar, saw significant efforts to integrate various cultural and intellectual traditions, fostering an environment of academic and cultural synthesis.

The British colonial period brought about profound changes in the Indian education system. The introduction of English education , driven by figures like Lord Macaulay , aimed to create a class of educated Indians who could serve as intermediaries between the British rulers and the local population. While this approach was primarily utilitarian, it inadvertently laid the foundation for a modern education system in India.

Institutions such as the University of Calcutta , the University of Bombay , and the University of Madras were established, providing higher education opportunities to Indians. The introduction of western sciences, literature , and philosophy broadened the intellectual horizons of Indian students, leading to the emergence of a new class of educated Indians who would later play pivotal roles in the struggle for independence.

With India's independence in 1947, the newly formed government recognized the critical role of education in nation-building. The vision of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru underscored the need for a comprehensive and inclusive education system that could drive social and economic development.

The establishment of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1956, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) marked significant milestones in the development of higher education in India. These institutions aimed to produce a skilled workforce capable of contributing to India's industrial and technological advancement.

Despite significant progress, India's education system faces numerous challenges. These include issues related to access, quality , and equity . The Right to Education Act (RTE) , enacted in 2009 , represents a landmark effort to address these challenges by guaranteeing free and compulsory education to all children between the ages of 6 and 14.

However, disparities in educational outcomes persist, particularly in rural and marginalized communities. Initiatives such as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan have sought to improve enrollment and retention rates, but there is a continued need for reforms that address the quality of education and ensure that all students receive a meaningful and relevant education.

Kerala, a state in southern India, is often cited as a success story in terms of educational development. With a literacy rate of over 96% , Kerala has achieved remarkable progress in providing quality education to its citizens. The state's emphasis on universal primary education , coupled with strong public investment in education and healthcare, has contributed to its high human development indicators.

Kerala's approach to education has also been inclusive, with significant efforts to bridge gender and social gaps . The state's commitment to education has not only improved individual outcomes but has also had a positive impact on broader socio-economic indicators , demonstrating the transformative potential of education.

The Navodaya Vidyalaya system , established in 1986 , aims to provide quality education to talented students from rural areas. These residential schools offer free education from Class VI to XII and focus on fostering academic excellence, leadership qualities, and social awareness.

The success of Navodaya Vidyalayas is evident in the achievements of their alumni, many of whom have gone on to excel in various fields, including science, engineering, medicin e, and public service. By providing high-quality education to students from underprivileged backgrounds, Navodaya Vidyalayas have played a crucial role in promoting social mobility and reducing educational inequalities.

The rapid advancement of technology has opened new avenues for education in India. Digital initiatives such as the National Digital Library of India (NDLI), the SWAYAM platform for online courses, and the e-Pathshala app for digital textbooks have expanded access to educational resources.

These initiatives have been particularly valuable in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic , which necessitated a shift to online learning . While challenges related to digital infrastructure and access remain, the integration of technology in education holds the potential to democratize learning and bridge gaps in educational provision.

The quality of education is inextricably linked to the quality of teaching. Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the learning experiences of students and, by extension, the destiny of the nation. In India, efforts to enhance teacher training and professional development have been central to educational reforms.

Innovative pedagogical approaches, such as experiential learning, inquiry-based learning, and the use of technology in the classroom, have been introduced to make education more engaging and effective. Programs like Teach for India have also contributed to improving the quality of education in under-resourced schools by bringing motivated and skilled teachers into the system.

As India grapples with challenges related to environmental sustainability, education for sustainable development (ESD) has gained prominence. Integrating ESD into the curriculum aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to address environmental issues and promote sustainable practices.

Initiatives such as the Green School Program and the incorporation of environmental studies in school curricula are steps in this direction. By fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among students, these initiatives contribute to building a sustainable future for the nation.

India's higher education sector plays a crucial role in driving innovation and research. Institutions such as the IITs, IIMs , and the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) have been at the forefront of India’s scientific and technological advancements.

Research and innovation are essential for addressing the complex challenges facing India, from healthcare and agriculture to energy and infrastructure. By fostering a culture of research and innovation, higher education institutions contribute to the development of solutions that can drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for all citizens.

To fully realize the potential of education in shaping India's destiny, several key policy recommendations can be considered:

Investing in early childhood education is critical for laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Programs such as Anganwadis should be strengthened and expanded to ensure that all children have access to quality early childhood education.

Continuous professional development for teachers is essential for improving the quality of education. Training programs should focus on modern pedagogical methods, subject expertise, and the use of technology in teaching.

Efforts to address disparities in educational access and outcomes must be intensified. Special attention should be given to marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes , Scheduled Tribes, and other disadvantaged groups.

Expanding digital infrastructure and access to technology can enhance educational opportunities, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Investments in digital literacy and online learning platforms should be prioritized.

Higher education institutions should be encouraged to collaborate with industry and government to drive research and innovation. Funding for research and development should be increased, and policies should support the commercialization of research outcomes.

The destiny of a nation is indeed shaped in its classrooms. In India, the journey of educational development has been marked by significant achievements and ongoing challenges. From ancient centers of learning to modern digital classrooms, education has been a driving force behind India's social, economic, and cultural progress.

By continuing to invest in education and addressing the challenges that remain, India can unlock the full potential of its human capital. Classrooms across the country have the power to transform lives, build a more equitable society, and drive sustainable development. As India looks to the future, the commitment to education will be instrumental in shaping the destiny of the nation and ensuring a brighter future for all its citizens.

The importance of the teacher in national life cannot be over-emphasized. It is he who influences the immature minds of the youth. He treats and tries to mould the living stuff into various forms. The future of the nation is fashioned by him through the process of education. A nation trying to march ahead on the roads to progress can leave the education of her sons and daughter in the hands of incompetent teachers only at its own risk. “The world of tomorrow will be born from the schools of today” says M.L Jacks. In this way, teachers, indeed, is the true builder of the nation.

In the past, teachers were held by all in the highest esteem. Even kings and emperors used to look upto them for guidance and advice in hours of crisis. As a matter of fact, teachers were the trustees of common welfare. Teachers in those days days were the true benefactors of society. History is full of examples which clearly show that great decisions of vital importance to the whole nation were taken on the directions of the teachers. Such was the importance which was enjoyed by teachers in the past.

Times have now undergone, a tremendous change. teachers have lost their old glory. they are now looked down upon in society. Their economic condition is simply miserable. Even the Government peons are better off than the primary, junior, and even High School teachers. We all know that economically our country is backward and the standard of living of the masses is low. In a country of such low standards, the teacher stands at the lowest rung of the ladder.

Besides this, we live in a materialistic world. Only those command respect and position in society who have enough money. The teacher, being poor, does not enjoy any prestige in society. He suffers in many other ways also. It has become a common feeling with the people that, one who fails everywhere else and has been rejected at all other places, becomes teacher as a last resort. In this way also teaching profession has been down-graded, their services are considered non essential and thus they do not get necessary recognition fro society.

There is great dissatisfaction and frustration among them. Working conditions in schools and colleges are appalling. It is needed very sad that such persons are in charge of education as are themselves quite ignorant. They often treat teachers as their domestic servants. Teachers remain helpless in getting such shocking conditions improved.

Education is a complicated process. Not only the teacher, but so many other agencies also take part in educating the youth. We are all aware of the influence of the cinema on the minds of children. How quickly they imitate the ways of dressing, walking and talking of their favorite stars is a matter of common experience. The television has also become quite popular. This too has its influence on children. Various other public activities like elections and meetings of political parties also serve as agencies of education. Rather, he has a very limited influence.

Today, education is increasingly being regarded as the major weapon in the crusade for supremacy on the economic front. Television, telephone and computers are reshaping practically every walk of life, including education. The classrooms of tomorrow could be entirely different fro those of today. The teachers will play a very significant role. It would not only be complex but also full of challenges, because dependence on the teacher will gradually diminish for an individual leaner. The television, telephone and computer will take over and encourage self-learning. Distance education may reduce the need to devote much time within the four walls of the classroom. New techniques of assessment will be available to the realistic assessment would also provide an opportunity for self-directed improvement by the learner, which is rare in the existing system.

However, the situation is not so depressing for a teacher. The importance of the role of the teachers as an agent of change, promoting understanding and tolerance has become more obvious and is likely to become even more critical in the 21st century . This places enormous responsibilities on teachers who participate in the molding of the character and minds of the new generation.

Indeed, it will be unfortunate for our country, if conditions of the teaching profession are allowed to deteriorate further. Let all round improvement be made in the conditions of the teachers without any further delay. Then only they will be able to play their vital role as nation builders. Then alone will education become a vital source of national integration.

The following essay comes from “ Meaningful education in times of uncertainty ,” a collection of essays from the Center for Universal Education and top thought leaders in the fields of learning, innovation, and technology.

This is a very ambitious goal. In many parts of the developing world, too many are left behind by not having access to school or learning the basics. Of the 121 million out-of-school children and adolescents in low- and middle-income countries, one-sixth of children did not complete primary school and one-third of adolescents did not complete lower secondary. Thirty percent of countries still do not have gender parity in primary and 50 percent do not have it in secondary.

Worst of all, 250 million children cannot read, write, or do basic arithmetic, although many of them have been in school for some years. “Schooling Ain’t Learning” states the subtitle of the excellent book from Lant Pritchett, “ The Rebirth of Education ,” which analyzes the challenges the developing world faces to ensure improvements in literacy and numeracy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has described it as the Global Learning Crisis.

To make matters worse, the demand for skills is migrating to non-routine cognitive and interpersonal skills, since many jobs are being lost to automation . Curricula in schools do not normally consider this change and education systems do not have the tools to address these more sophisticated skills.

Globalization has made these changes present in almost every country, adding to existing inequalities and contributing to the intergenerational transmission of poverty. In many low-income, and even middle-income countries, certified teachers (i.e. teachers who have received the formal education required by the country’s regulations) lack knowledge in some subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry, lack adequate quantities of textbooks, and connectivity (and sometimes even electricity) is rare in school buildings. Yet, even in these cases, the demand for higher-level thinking skills is present in the labor market, imposing a double-challenge over an already overburdened school system.

In this context, what should be the role of the teacher? It would be easy to respond that if the basics do not exist, we should not expect anything more than the basics, thus allowing the next generation of students to be unskilled and unprepared for the future ahead.

In this short essay, I try to state the opposite: It is possible, with the appropriate support, to expect teachers to help students to be active citizens and professionals in these times of uncertainty.

The path to scale 21st century education in countries with struggling education ecosystems

These countries cannot make their school systems progress step-by-step, first covering the last mile in access, then promoting the outdated model of quality education for all, and finally ensuring that the system incorporates the development of a new set of skills. They will have to leapfrog and learn from countries that have previously improved their education systems.

For this to be feasible, some initial deficiencies will need to be addressed, such as a precarious pre-service and in-service education and inefficient teachers’ hiring processes. Pre-service education in the developing world tends to overemphasize the theory, at the expense of the practice of education. A curriculum reform in the tertiary institutions that prepare future teachers would be more than welcome. Only through a solid reflection on a teacher’s everyday practice could we advance towards a model where they could be seen less as a mere class provider and more as a mediator in the process of skills development—literacy and numeracy, higher order cognitive skills, or social and emotional skills. These skills are better developed through interactions, not speeches or copying from a blackboard, as most teachers do. Facilitating a class where consistent participation is expected is extremely difficult for novice teachers that were themselves taught through pedagogies that don’t demand students’ engagement.

Last year, the OECD delivered an interesting report on the strategies mathematics teachers from participating countries in PISA 2012 used to deliver their instruction. 4 The report grouped the strategies into three categories: active learning, where the emphasis is on promoting student engagement in their own learning, with support of ICT and lots of teamwork; cognitive activation, where students are challenged into a process that develops higher order thinking skills, especially problem solving and critical thinking; and teacher-directed instruction, that relies on the teacher ability to deliver good classes. According to the report, the strategies are not mutually exclusive, which demand the instructor a constant change in roles, to adjust to the kind of instruction being implemented.

Pre-service education and hiring processes in the developing world should prepare professionals that are ready to manage these more sophisticated roles as they deal with their daily teaching of classes.

In addition to this important transformation, professional development should incorporate the notion that, in addition to being a mediator, a teacher is part of a team and teaching is not an isolated work. Teachers need to learn to collaborate, co-create, plan classes, and monitor their work together. This could be in the school they are working or within a school system. Good initiatives of pairing struggling schools with better performing ones in the same area—thus dealing with the same student population—have shown promising results globally.

The real challenge is that before the profession becomes more attractive, and the pre-service education more effective, these countries need to deal with a current cohort of teachers that often lack the skills and repertoire to face this complex reality. In these cases, a blend of more scripted teaching strategies with space for experimentation and support for innovation have shown to be effective. Studies have shown that unskilled teachers benefit greatly from additional support such as pre-formatted class plans, digital classes, and more detailed textbooks.

Despite this, learning—through collaboration or professional development courses—how to deliver classes that are more engaging and allow for the student’s space to develop higher order thinking skills, is feasible even under these difficult circumstances. It just demands more structured professional development and better-prepared instructors to address these teachers’ needs.

This demands mentoring and class observations, together with structured materials to support initial efforts from the novice teacher to prepare meaningful class-plans and deliver them. It also requires some additional time if the classes are—as in some developing countries—too short or based on a curriculum overloaded with unnecessary content.

Building Global Citizens at Uncertain Times

The demands put on schools are not restricted to preparing students for the increasing demands of the labor market. A child needs to grow to be an informed member of the society in which they live and to have the knowledge and capabilities to participate. In addition to acquiring basic cognitive and social and emotional skills, a solid Global Citizenship curriculum should be introduced in the school system even in the developing world. Understanding how his or her own country is organized, and how it connects to a globalized world, will be of great value for the student.

To foster the skills needed to become a global citizen, we should develop these skills in a structured way in the teachers’ workforce. This means in-service education through collaboration and group-discussions on empathy, cultural appreciation, ethnic and gender identities, and general knowledge of current world affairs and challenges. A teacher that believes she is part of humanity and not just of a region or a country tends to foster the same perception in her students.

Ultimately, if we want students to become citizens, we need to give them a voice. Very often, in school systems, we treat teenagers as children and don’t trust them to be responsible for their own student lives and choices. This means we must trust them to take part in important decisions about the school curriculum and we must discuss their behavior issues with them directly—not their parents. This would also require allowing some space for them to make mistakes and learning to correct them effectively. A global citizen, it must be understood, is first a citizen in his own school, community, and country. If we truly want to prepare them to become informed and active members in their countries, it is important to give them some space to exercise choices and activism at an early stage.

In Rio de Janeiro, where I was municipal secretary of education, we introduced a mandatory assignment at the beginning of 7th grade, for the adolescents to state in a structured way the life project—that meant putting their dreams into words and learning to plan their future lives. They did it at the beginning of the school year, in an activity conducted with the support of 9th graders that were trained specifically for the task. Only after the whole class arrived at an acceptable proposition for each kid did the teachers enter the classroom, at which point each student could choose a mentor teacher to continue discussing their projects. The results were impressive for both students and instructors.

Using Technology to Leapfrog

Although it might seem utopic, education in low- and middle-income countries can benefit from modern technology even when the basics are lacking, if a more contextualized approach to including such tools in the classroom is taken, as a support to teachers not as an additional subject.

In China, for example, the Ministry of Education offers schools options to use digital classes. In Rio de Janeiro, when I was secretary, we took a similar approach: offering all teachers the use of digital classes prepared by trained instructors. The use of the platform has shown positive impacts on learning. Yet to take full advantage of this tool, connectivity needs to exist. In the absence of this, pen-drives or offline options were provided. Using technology for remedial education was and is still done, even when connectivity is not available.

Other possibilities are the broadcasting of classes to support instruction where specific teachers are not available. An interesting example of this innovative practice was highlighted in the Millions Learning report from the Center for Universal Education at Brookings. The school system in the state of Amazonas in Brazil had the challenge of providing physics and chemistry classes in the Amazon jungle for high school students. The solution was to enlist a teacher to broadcast classes and provide schools with a generalist teacher to ensure class participation and student engagement.

The use of technology in these examples show the possible advantages of bringing resources and a knowledge base that is not yet available in every classroom. On the other hand, the fact that in the education ecosystem it exists somewhere and may be mobilized is of great help and doesn’t give teachers the sense of disempowerment, since it is prepared by teachers from within the Amazonas system or by members of the community and not by a distant company located in another country.

Conclusions

The SDG-4 demands an organized effort to ensure that every child and adolescent in the world has the means to complete quality primary and secondary school, as well as develop skills to live a healthy and productive life. Unfortunately, as uncertainty grows, this task seems almost impossible—even in high-income countries—as more complex skills are demanded by employers and globalization requiring individuals who understand the challenges the planet is facing and that can operate in different geographies.

What should be the role of teachers, in such an environment, especially in low- and middle-income countries? This is the question I have tried to answer here, providing some clues of what could be done to ensure that the United Nation’s goal can actually produce a more educated global society, and that a better world might emerge.

Education is an essential tool for developing skills like decision-making, mental agility, problem-solving, and logical thinking. It also breeds creativity and innovation. In other words, Education is the transmission of knowledge, skills, and character traits. As BR Ambedkar said: “ Education is the manifestation of Perfection already in Man “. He also believed that “Education is that which makes men fearless, teaches unity, makes understand their birth rights and teaches them to struggle and fight for freedom”.

According to Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan , where scientific knowledge ends, the realm of mystery begins. The world of scientific facts and the world of values is different. If education does not build wisdom and humanity in the hearts and minds of men, all its professional, scientific and technological triumphs will be meaningless. Therefore on the Birth date of S Radhakrishnan, we celebrate Teachers Day.

Education shapes a person, just as people are essential in determining a nation’s standing. The youth is important because they will be our future. Today they might be our partners, tomorrow they will go on to become leaders. The youths are very energetic and enthusiastic. They have the ability to learn and adapt to the environment . Similarly, they are willing to learn and act on it as well to achieve their goals.

Our youth can bring social reform and improvement in society. We cannot make do without the youth of a country. Furthermore, the nation requires their participation to achieve the goals and help in taking the country towards progress.

Likewise, we see how the development of any country requires active participation from the youth. It does not matter which field we want to progress in, whether it is the technical field or sports field, youth is needed. It is up to us how to help the youth in playing this role properly. We must make all the youth aware of their power and the role they have to play in nation-building.

Ways to Help the Youth

There are many ways in which we can help the youth of our country to achieve their potential. For that, the government must introduce programs that will help in fighting off issues like unemployment, poor education institutes and more to help them prosper without any hindrance.

Similarly, citizens must make sure to encourage our youth to do better in every field. When we constantly discourage our youth and don’t believe in them, they will lose their spark. We all must make sure that they should be given the wind beneath their wings to fly high instead of bringing them down by tying chains to their wings.

Furthermore, equal opportunities must be provided for all irrespective of caste, creed, gender , race, religion and more. There are various issues of nepotism and favoritism that is eating away the actual talent of the country. This must be done away with as soon as possible. We must make sure that every youth has the chance to prove themselves worthy and that must be offered equally to all.

In short, our youth has the power to build a nation so we must give them the opportunity. They are the future and they have the perspective which the older generations lack. Their zeal and enthusiasm must be channelized properly to help a nation prosper and flourish.
