Academic resume example with 4 years of experience

Why this resume works

  • Be specific and to the point while conveying your best.
  • Customize your objective by mentioning the target business by name and sprinkling in some relevant keywords from the  job description .
  • Use industry-specific terms in your academic resume and pepper it with solid metrics to demonstrate your impact.
  • For example, saying you “prepared 3-4 genomic samples per week from DNA for sequencing” shows your industry familiarity while using numbers to offer an easy-to-read glimpse of your duties.

Scholarship Academic Resume

Scholarship academic resume example with 2+ years of project experience

  • Add any projects that you’ve been a part of or have volunteered for. Since you’re only a graduate, academic institutions know you won’t have much experience to showcase. As long as your resume contains coherent future goals backed by relevant experience, you’ll be good to go!

High School Academic Resume

High school academic resume example

  • When writing your high school academic resume , try to be concise without leaving out important information. Using words like ‘successfully’ or ‘skillfully’ will only take up extra space and may be considered filler.
  • We suggest using the reverse-chronological  resume format  for an easy-to-read, logical flow.
  • Reverse-chronological formatting orders your work experience and education from the most recent to the oldest, so employers get to the most relevant stuff first.
  • Double-check your resume  work experience bullet points to ensure they take less than three lines and stick to between 20 to 200 characters per bullet.

College Academic Resume

College academic resume example with 3 years of experience

  • The most critical sections in your college academic resume are the contact information, work experience, skills, and education.
  • For example, “Inspected, maintained, and ordered repairs for medical equipment, reducing repair costs by $27K in 2018” proves that you won’t need a lot of training and will add value right away.

Grad School Academic Resume

Grad school academic resume example with 3 years of experience

  • Your grad school academic resume should highlight your dependability and commitment to excellence.
  • For example, “Developed action plans for 15 chemistry students based on academic goals and personal needs”
  • Lastly, polish it off with a hint of subtle color for pop while remaining professional, and don’t be afraid to have just a touch of white space.

Academic Advisor No Experience Resume

Academic advisor no experience resume example with tutor experience

  • If you have any project experience with researching fields of study or guiding students toward their future, add them at all costs! Any amount of experience with improving a student’s learning ability and grades will do wonders too.

Academic Advisor Resume

Academic advisor resume example with 18 years of experience

  • Quantifying your impact provides a numerical overview of what recruiters can expect from you.
  • How many students did I advise?
  • Did I help students obtain scholarship money? If so, how much?
  • Did I get positive performance reviews?
  • Don’t exaggerate your results or  resume skills , hoping to impress recruiters. It will break their trust and put too much pressure on you if hired.

Academic Coach Resume

Academic coach resume example with 8 years of experience

  • This won’t just underscore your commitment to continual learning and adherence to international coaching standards. It also reflects your expertise in dealing with familial and youth-related situations, a skill crucial for academic mentorship. Other certifications you could flaunt in your piece are Instructional Coaching Penn GSE and ALC Academic Life Coaching.

Academic Library Resume

Academic library resume example with 5 years of experience

  • Suppose you once served as a receptionist where you handled social media, managed documents, or used tools like Microsoft Teams to better communicate with internal teams. Transferable skills learned from these experiences can prove useful in your quest for the library role.

Woman confused and overwhelmed as she stares at computer trying to update resume

No matter where you are in your academic career, we can walk you through in four easy steps how to write your own academic resume. As you work through these steps, you’ll find the academic resume samples above will help you stay on track and give you the inspiration you need to make your own.

Use a reverse-chronological format to list experience, volunteer efforts, and personal and academic projects. If you’re between early high school or post-graduate school, we bet you have academic and personal projects, like research, internships, mentoring, volunteering, etc. that you can talk about in reverse-chronological order.

Functional and combo formats are tempting, but a reverse timeline will give recruiters the best insight into your skills and what you offer.

Especially if pursuing higher education, list the school, degree, and year you earned the degree in your academic resume. If you’re still studying, set the date to the anticipated graduation year.

List relevant courses to your degree plan. For example, if you’re a Biology major wanting a research assistant position, Biology of Mammalian Cells and Tissues would be a relevant course. You can also include a high GPA as well as honors, awards, and affiliations.

Briefly explain how the skills you’ve gained from your academic background (UCLA graduate with 3+ years of assisting and supervising biological research) couple well with the role (collaborate with a multi-disciplinarian team in life-science research) you’re seeking at a specific organization.

As you read a company’s job ad, what qualities and traits are important for the role that resonate with you? Let that be your springboard to write a customized career objective.

Share results whether the work you’ve done has been paid work, volunteer work, or even class projects. For example, maybe you volunteered to mentor students at a tutor center.

Rather than say you developed lessons or communicated with parents, discuss outcomes that speak to your abilities. “Worked one on one with students to improve math scores by one letter grade” or “increased student enrollment by 8% with new referral program” speaks volumes about your work!

These kinds of bullet points also make a great launching pad for story-telling in your academic cover letter .

A quality higher education cover letter and your resume should intrigue the reader, encouraging them to get to know you better and how you could fit within their institution.

Top Professional Resume Tips for Higher Education Teaching Professionals

Professional profile.

Resume objective statements are old school. They do not add value to your document. A professional career summary or profile should begin your resume with a brief description of your soft skills. This is the first point in your resume where you can showcase your skills, expertise, and passion for the position you are applying for.

Ensure that you create this summary based on the specific position. This lets the person reading it know you took the time to understand what the college or university is looking for in a candidate and target your valuable assets to the position requirements.

Start your professional summary with a sentence outlining your experience, for instance:

“Passionate, well-rounded, and dynamic educator with nearly 15 years of experience driving interactive and engaging classroom discussions where students are held accountable for recognizing the connection between learning and experience.”

This would be an excellent introduction to an Adjunct Professor’s resume.

The professional profile is the opportunity to convey some of your essential skills and use some academic buzzwords in a meaningful paragraph before you delve into your hard skills and professional background.

Areas of Expertise – Examples

This area of expertise section of your higher education resume should be littered with educational buzzwords/keywords that you find in the job posting. This is where you can insert relevant keywords and job competencies that the Applicant Tracking Systems will pick up instantly. Ensure that the characteristics you insert apply to your background and what the institute would look for in an applicant.

One resume writing tip a university instructor might use is to develop a bullet point list of 10-12 core competencies highlighting the areas of expertise. These strengths will communicate that you know the teaching skills and areas needed to perform the job you wish to secure.

Sample Areas of Strength to Include in Your Resume

Adjunct professor:.

Student Connections, Subject Matter, Curriculum Development, Instructional Design, Real World Applications, Creative Problem Solving, Academic Policies, Classroom Management, Feedback and Assessment, Mentorship, Student Management Systems

 Dean of Students:

Student Retention, Crisis Management, Diversity and Inclusion, Student Development Theory, Policies and Procedures, Professional Development, Policy Development, Program Review, Faculty Evaluation.

  Chief Financial Officer:

Financial Reporting, Capital Management, Budgeting and Forecasting, Risk Management, Treasury Management, Compliance and Governance, Stakeholder Relations, Strategic Planning, and Regulatory Grant Funding.

  Communications Director:

Communication Strategies, Strategic Communication, Public Relations, Crisis Communication, Professional Leadership, Attention to Detail, Brand Management, Digital Communication, Social Media Branding.

  Department Chair:

Academic Leadership and Administration, Research and Scholarship, Program Development & Management, Supervision of Teaching, Program Evaluation, Conflict Resolution, Strategic Planning, and Data-Driven Decision-making.

College Student Advisor:

Student Counseling & Support, Academic Advising, Data Analysis, Interpersonal Communication, Academic Educational Guidance, Crisis Intervention, Program Coordination, Reporting, Case Loads.

Co-op Advisor :

Career Preparation, Academic Integration, Data Management, Compliance and Policy, Materials Development, Learning Management Systems, Student Support, Progress Monitoring, and Work Term Monitoring.

Higher Education Resume Keywords

Larger employers use applicant tracking systems to weed out resumes as the initial review. A concrete way to pass this initial review is to include relevant industry keywords or buzzwords specific to the position you are applying for and apply them to your skill set. Use the job description to determine what knowledge, skills, and qualifications the employer values, and sprinkle those words throughout your resume.

For example, an Adjunct Professor should possess organizational skills, be an effective communicator, be technologically savvy, and support colleagues .

One thing to remember is to build the wording from the job posting into your resume. If the posting states, “ individualized lesson planning a plus ,” incorporate that into your resume as “ Experience in creating individualized lesson plans to encourage full student participation and engagement based on unique learning styles, needs, and goals .”

Look at the school website, department page, online job descriptions, and other job postings to help determine some key buzzwords to include.

Using the correct keywords is one of the most important aspects of writing resumes or CVs in higher education or any other industry.

Education and Credentials

Most higher education positions require applicants to have a minimum of a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Take a close look at the job posting to determine the educational requirements and think about listing those relevant to the position. There is no need to list your high school diploma.

If a significant amount of time has passed between achieving your last degree and the date you are applying for a new position, consider not including graduation dates.

A general rule of thumb is to start your education list with the most recent completions. State the name of your degree, the institution, and the institution’s location, then the year of graduation or expected completion, if applicable. Under your education, include any teaching certifications or other credentials you have received.

Include Thesis Details

Suppose you have obtained your master’s degree or doctorate. In that case, you may want to include your thesis statement within your educational experience section, especially if it is relevant to the subject you wish to teach. Include below the institution where you received the degree and put it in italics so it stands out without removing the educational listing.

For instance:

Thesis : “ The role of nature vs. nurture and its impact on children’s early childhood and elementary education. ”

Thesis : “Homework and Achievement: Investigating the role homework plays on student achievement.”

Teaching or Professional Experience

In the professional experience section of your resume, include a brief description of your job duties and responsibilities, followed by a listing of your achievements within that position. Ensure that you list your most recent post first, and if you are no longer at the job listed, write your description and accomplishments in the past tense.

Listing your achievements in bullet form makes them stand out within the resume. The achievements must reflect any classroom experience, school community involvement, and educational improvements you made in your past experiences.

Depending on the position you are applying for in higher education, you may have previous accounting experience, board positions, or professional jobs other than teaching.

Suppose you are applying for an adjunct teaching position in a corporate career. In that case, you will want to highlight any subject-related experience and skills you have and any training or presentation experience.

Here are a few examples of work experiences.

Dean of students resume excerpt sample excerpt:.

Maintained student service and academic program offerings for 10,000 on-campus and 15,000 distance education students. Established development and institutional advancement initiatives. Addressed diversity issues within the college curriculum, oversaw residential housing operations, and recruited senior administrators and academic staff.

  • Established a campus crisis counseling initiative for students and families in the dean’s office.
  •   Organized and facilitated ten-week-long educational program events that increased academic participation by 20%.
  •   Created a comprehensive communication and training program to meet senior academic staff’s diverse needs, goals, and learning styles.

Director of Alumni Relations Resume Sample Excerpt:

Advise and administer the development and management of alumni events and volunteer programs. Identify, cultivate, and solicit alumni prospects for annual gifts and educate graduating students about alumni benefits and philanthropy. Ensure accurate and complete alumni database records utilizing state-of-the-art technological programs.

  •   Raised $1 million for special projects and events in collaboration with various faculties and the Alumni Association.
  •   Introduced new and improved database recording technology to create a more effective customer service protocol for alumni who emailed, called, or visited campus.
  •   Coordinated with the Senior Director of Alumni Engagement to create and execute a more comprehensive approach to alumni engagement by creating online chat rooms and on-campus clubs.

Professional Development and Other Resume Headers

After completing the professional experience section, you can decide what further headings to include on your higher education resume. Some examples of additional sections that you can have are:

  • Professional Development
  • Professional Affiliations
  • Presentations
  • Publications
  • Volunteer Experience

Try to keep the information specific to the job you are applying for. If you have volunteer experience with no transferable skills, do not include it, as you want to maintain a job-specific tailored resume.

Another point to remember is not to overload your resume with information that may not necessarily be required to obtain your next job as an Adjunct Professor, Chief Technology Officer, or Director of Education. If you find your resume getting too lengthy after including your extracurricular involvement, then take the time to review it and thoroughly think about what could be removed to maintain an acceptable length.

Remember, though, that if the job posting requests an academic CV, they expect a more extended version of a resume that will include all of these sections.

Quotes and Recommendation Statements

If you have meaningful quotes from colleagues or supervisors that describe vital skills and attributes that connect you to the position you are applying for, why not include them on your resume? If you do not have space in your resume or would rather have a quote at the bottom of your cover letter, go for it.

If you include a testimonial/quote on your resume, the best places to insert the one or two lines are at the top of the page, above your professional profile, or at the bottom of the resume. Do not forget to include the name of the person who provided the quote and italicize the lines to stand out against the other resume font. Here is an example:

“Ms. Smith is a very creative and collaborative leader who has provided our district with exceptional support and programs, ensuring success for all teachers and students.”

Dean Quinton, Principal

Focus Your Resume to Match the Job Position

What to include in your resume will depend on your expertise, professional background, skill set, and what position you are hoping to secure. By closely examining the job, you can better understand what the institution is looking for in a qualified candidate.

If you are applying for a position that is the next step in your career path, such as transitioning from an instructor to a dean position, then include the relevant skills to secure an interview for the Dean of Students. However, if you want to enter the college or university scene as a professor or adjunct instructor, you would include a much different set of skills. You may use some transferable skills from previous employment.

A critical tip to tailoring your higher education resume is to ensure the content matches what the educational institution is looking for. Make them picture you in the position through your experiences and accomplishments.

Use C.A.R. to Determine Accomplishments

One of the best ways to determine your accomplishments is to use the acronym C-A-R: Challenge-Action-Result. When describing your achievements, think of a challenge or task, your strategy to handle it, and the achieved results. Employers are looking for ways to disqualify you, therefore ensure that you clearly outline how your past experiences and successes have benefited the company or institution.

For example:

“Identified district-wide curriculum issues specific to special needs learners. Hired specialists and facilitated workshops for special education teachers to eliminate issues.”

“Implemented Fountas and Pinnell Reading Program to help all students jump a minimum of one reading level by year-end.”

“Introduced an after-school peer support program to encourage students to help one another with their studies while tackling social problems and increasing peer friendships; resulted in decreased problem behaviors and increased understanding of the material.”

Quantify Accomplishments

Numbers go a long way to establish your achievements in a more meaningful format. Numbers stand out against a sea of words, so as often as possible, quantify your accomplishments using numbers as much as possible.

Here are a few examples:

“Boosted student attendance by 10% by restoring student-faculty relationships.”

“Reduced student discipline rate by 8% by implementing restorative discipline program.”

“Increased students’ final exam marks by 20% by implementing a study tutorial program.”

This is probably the most crucial step in writing your higher education resume. Always proofread your work for spelling and grammar. Being able to submit a resume that is free of mistakes and looks polished will undoubtedly be worth the time you take to read it over a few times. Make sure that the spelling is correct and that your dates and address information are accurate. A great tip is to have a friend re-read your resume to see anything you missed.

Research Faculty Institution

Investigating the college or university mission, future goals, and position expectations can go a long way when applying for the next step in your career. Avoid using the first person when describing the capabilities you will bring to the position. Simple statements that connect the job description to your responsibilities show that you have read and thought about the requirements specified in the posting.

Resume Formatting and Design

Your resume’s overall formatting should be consistent with the other submitted documents. This means your resume, cover letter, thank you letter, reference page, etc., should all have the same header, margins, font style and size, and borders, if applicable. Bold or italicize your name and section headings, and keep your qualifications the focal point.

Summing it Up!

Being organized is a top skill for any position in the higher education field. Ensure that your resume or curriculum vitae looks professional and clean, which will easily translate to your academic skill set. Read the job description and posting in detail to tailor your resume or CV to match. This will set you apart from other candidates and land your application in the interview pile.

Use metrics throughout your work. This will showcase your accomplishments in detail and allow the reader to input your hard skills into the position you are applying for.

There are many ways to write a professional resume for your next job as Dean of Students or English Professor. Follow the tips outlined above, and you will surpass the other applicants and sit across from the interview panel in no time.

Take the time to review resume samples to get ideas for formatting, content, keyword placement, and organization.

How To Write an Education Resume

How to pick the best education resume template, education text-only resume templates and examples, frequently asked questions: education resume examples and advice, check out related examples.

When creating your resume for education jobs, use each section to show you can provide positive learning experiences for students and manage a classroom. The below tips and examples will help you capture this theme on your resume so it gets you interviews for your next job in the education sector.

  • Entry-Level

Education Resume Examples and Templates for 2024

1. Write a dynamic profile summarizing your education qualifications

In a brief paragraph or  bullet list  at the top of your resume, outline three to five key reasons why your target employers can count on you to support students’ learning.

These may include your years of related experience or a certain approach you take to working with students or managing a classroom. They may also include an advanced degree, rare certification, or anything else that sets you apart from other candidates and shows your commitment to education. Feel free to get specific in this section as well – a quantified achievement is often a great way to drive home the strengths you’re showcasing in your profile. By leading with your top qualifications, you can catch hiring managers’ attention and persuade them to read further.

(Note, most job seekers find it easier to write their profile last.)

Entry-Level Profile Example

Art Educator  with strong recent work, volunteer, and academic experience. Passionate about engaging students in art theory and practice and helping young people explore their creative potential. Skilled at adapting instructional methods to each student’s learning style. Master of Arts in Teaching.

Mid-Career Profile Example

Collaborative  College Admissions Counselor  with 5+ years of experience. Skilled communicator who puts admission and financial aid topics in clear terms for diverse applicants and their families. Experienced public speaker passionate about conveying the value of higher education to prospective students. Adapt readily to new work challenges and conditions. Bilingual: Fluent in English and Spanish.

2. Add a detailed education professional experience section

For each job in your  recent work history , brainstorm your duties and achievements on a separate document or sheet of paper. Then, identify and copy the most relevant details into your resume’s experience section. This approach keeps your resume concise and focused.

How will your performance be measured in your target education job? Give examples of your success in a similar capacity – this helps hiring managers envision the impact you’d have on their school community. Also, think about broader measures of school success and student outcomes, like average test scores or enrollment or graduation rates. Have you helped drive improvement in those areas? If so, how? Your answers to these questions will generate strong points for your experience section.

Mid-Career Professional Experience Example

College Admissions Counselor,  TNN College, San Francisco, CA | August 2017 to Present

  • Ensure students understand all application essay requirements and offer tips and resources for managing the writing process
  • Build positive, productive relationships with diverse high school students and their families

  • Plan and implement community outreach initiatives and school events to foster positive relationships across faculty, students, and parents
  • Lead the development and implementation of college prep programs and academic advisory services, resulting in a 30% increase in successful college admissions

3. Include your education and certifications relevant to education

Start by giving basic details on your highest education degree. Then, flesh out this section with details that help show your knowledge base in your target field, such as a major or minor in education, teaching license, related training programs, or educator conferences you’ve attended. Details like these can add a valuable dimension to your resume. They show you’re not just invested in students’ learning and development but in your own.

Below are templates and examples to help you format your  education  and  certification  details. Note that optional template areas appear in [brackets].

Degree Name — [Major, Minor],  School Name, City, ST or online | [Year]

  • New Media and Crafts
  • Traditional Media

Certification

Certification Name or  Title , [Awarding Organization] | [Year]

[Description]

4. List key skills and proficiencies related to education

Add a key skills section to show the various ways you can contribute to your target education job. Feel free to include soft and hard skills, as well as technical programs in this section. Below are some common education skills and keywords to consider:

Also, ensure the template complies with  applicant tracking systems (ATS)  used by employers to screen resumes.

What are common action verbs for education resumes? -

One of the best ways to enhance your resume is by starting each bullet point with a strong action verb. Dynamic verbs keep the hiring manager’s attention and show the varied nature of your experience. The following list can help you find a good mix of action verbs for your education resume:

Action Verbs
Created Decreased
Enhanced Established
Generated Improved
Increased Instructed
Mentored Organized
Prevented Produced
Ranked Reduced
Streamlined Strengthened
Taught Trained
Updated Won

How do you align your education resume with a job posting? -

The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that jobs for educational instruction and library occupations will grow at roughly the same rate as the average for all U.S. jobs between 2022 and 2032, with around 857,600 openings each year.

You can get more interviews in this field if you tailor your resume for each application. Start by looking closely at the job description and highlighting words that are repeated, emphasized, or otherwise seem important. These key words can tell you what details you may want to feature in your resume profile or key skills sections (as long as they’re accurate to your experience).

For example, if the organization seeks someone collaborative, you may want to call out that aspect of your experience in your profile and key skills sections. Or say the school has many non-English speaking customers. You could highlight your foreign language skills both in your profile and as a separate section farther down the document. With adjustments like these, you can make your resume more relevant to each job opportunity.

What is the best education resume format? -

Most education professionals should use the combination (or hybrid) format. True to its name, this format combines two important features of other resume formats: the chronological format’s experience section, and the functional format’s profile section. (The resume examples on this page all use combination format.)

By fusing these two features, a combination resume offers the best of both worlds. The experience section lets you outline your recent work history – essential information for most employers. At the same time, the profile section lets you display your career highlights at the top, regardless if they’re from that work history or another part of your background. As a result, you can present yourself clearly and strategically. With this format, you give hiring managers the best view of your experience and relevant strengths, so they can make an informed decision to call you for an interview.

1. What Should I Include in an Education Resume?

  • Your education is something that you should focus on. It is very important that you are already aware of the basic functions of teachers and other academic employees. This will help you to easily familiarize yourself with the processes that should be done in a teaching environment.
  • Have a list of your teaching experiences . Though there are some academic institutions who hire applicants without prior work experiences in the industry, it is still more advantageous if you can present the specific teaching work functions that you were able to execute during your past teaching employment. If you still lack professional teaching experiences, you may use a fresher resume template , which commonly follows a functional resume format.
  • It will be best if you list your accomplishments in the teaching industry. Your duties as a teacher may not be as impact-giving as your achievements. However, you can still place them in your resume. It is just advisable to showcase your accomplishments as teaching positions are more focused on results rather than usual operational functions.

3. Am I Fit in the Field of Education?

  • You need to have a natural interest in teaching. Whether you want to be a teacher or not, there will always be times where you need to direct different entities within a school environment. Your love for teaching should also be rooted in your passion for learning as it is a process that will always be present in the field of education.
  • You must have prior experiences in the education industry. It is not necessarily professional experiences that you need to have. Whether you are a teacher intern or if you have attended educational seminars and conventions; you first need to identify whether the functions that may be given to you is relevant to your likes, need for professional growth, and expected daily tasks.
  • You should be familiar with even a few school processes. Since there are a lot of job positions in the field of education, you need to at least have exposure or knowledge areas with the procedures that are being executed by employees who have the work post that you want to be considered for. Simple resumes used by teachers, for example, should be able to identify whether it is a fresher lecturer resume or an experienced teacher resume. Being specific with the processes that you are aware of can help employers to directly assess your qualifications for a targeted work post.

4. Guidelines in Writing an Education Resume

  • Your education resume should be formatted properly so you can impress employers . Being able to create an education resume that is well-formatted can give an impression that you can also make effective educational documents for students and other entities involved in academic transactions.
  • Review samples and templates of education resumes, especially those that are related to the educational job position that you are applying for. Doing this can help you create objective comparisons that will allow you to improve the content and layout of your professional profile. Unlike sample college resume templates which can be more casual, your education resume should provide a reflection of your professionalism as an education practitioner.
  • Make sure that you focus on your qualifications, experiences and work ethics as being technical is not just the important area that hiring bodies will be looking out for. They will also identify how you can benefit the development of the students and their functions within the school environment.

What to Include in Your Education Section

The education section on a resume gives hiring managers a glimpse into your academic achievements , interests, and skills.

It can demonstrate your commitment to learning, your ability to succeed in a structured environment, and the relevant knowledge you've acquired.

The information you should include in this section, though, varies based on things like your career level, the exact job you're applying for, and how recent your education is.

This means you don’t always have to be super detailed. Some of the information about your education is optional, and some of it may even be redundant if you have relevant work experience, so you should only use it if you think it can give your resume a boost.

Let’s start with the details most employers expect to see:

Essential Information

  • Degree Name. Include the type of degree and the relevant major. (E.g.: BFA in Graphic Design)
  • University Name. Add the name of the institution you studied at. (E.g.: University of Saint Andrews)
  • Location. If the university isn’t well known or the name doesn’t specify where it is, include the general location. (E.g.: St Andrews, Scotland)
  • Years Attended. Usually, only the years you attend there are enough, but the mm/yyyy format is also popular. (E.g.: 09/2018 - 06/2021)

Optional Information

  • Honors and Awards. If you’ve received any acknowledgments, list them here. (E.g.: Dean's List, Summa Cum Laude, Merit Scholarships, Valedictorian)
  • Relevant Coursework. List three to five courses that directly apply to your target job. (E.g.: Marketing 101, Marketing Strategy, PR Basics)
  • Thesis or Dissertation. We recommend including this for graduate-level degrees in research-heavy fields.
  • Minor. If relevant, include any additional areas of study. (E.g.: BA in Creative Writing, Minor in Journalism)
  • Grade Point Average. Only include your GPA if it's 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale. Anything lower can undermine your application.
  • Extracurricular Activities. Mention any clubs or organizations that seem relevant. (E.g.: Debate team, Theater Club, School Newspaper)

Here’s an example of an education section that includes information from both categories:

How to Format Education on Your Resume

Now that you have an idea of what to include in your education section, let’s explain how you should do it.

In terms of structuring your education section, follow a reverse-chronological order ; this means, list your latest educational entry first and then go backward from there.

And remember – if you have a relevant university degree, there’s no need to waste precious space on your resume by listing your high school education .

As a general rule, if you’re an experienced professional and you have a Master’s degree, you can also omit your undergrad degree. Hiring managers are a lot more interested in your work experience section, so your education section should only focus on the basics.

However, if you’re a recent graduate , you might want to include more details to give your resume an extra kick. It’s always a good idea to leverage your education if you don’t have enough relevant work experience.

Now, regardless of your level of experience, add the name of your degree at the very top of the entry in your education section.

The same degree can be written down differently, for instance:

  • Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Culture with a Minor in Teaching
  • BA in English Language and Culture, Minor in Teaching
  • B.A. English Language and Culture (Major), Teaching (Minor)
  • BA, English Language and Culture

Here’s an example of what the formatting in your education section should look like:

how to list education on a resume

If you graduated from a famous university with a good reputation, you can highlight that first. For example, list “Harvard University” before the name of your degree.

Where to Place Education on Your Resume

Another important thing to consider is where to position the education section on your resume.

This mostly depends on where you are in your career. Do you have a lot of relevant achievements in the field, or are you looking for your first job ?

As a rule of thumb, the top third of your resume should be reserved for your accomplishments , which are most relevant to the job you are applying for.

So before you place this section on your resume, ask yourself: is your education your biggest selling point to the hiring manager?

Most of the time, it won’t be. Work experience is way more important for just about any position above entry level, so it should be listed first.

Let’s look at an example of a resume that puts this into action:

education on resume examples

As you can see, this architect resume starts by listing their relevant work experience and then includes a detailed entry of their most recent degree.

When Does Education Go Before Work Experience?

While your work experience section is generally more important, there are a few cases where you should list your education first.

These include:

  • You have no work experience. When you have absolutely no work experience yet, you should focus on your academic achievements instead.
  • You just graduated college. If you don’t have relevant work experience, you’re often better off not listing it. For example, if you’re applying for an entry-level office job, the part-time teenage jobs you had won’t be anywhere near as relevant as your recently earned BA in Marketing.
  • You are currently studying. If you’re in the process of earning a degree that’s relevant to your targeted field, it’s better to list education before work experience. For example, if you’re making a career change , you would want your new education to be the first thing the hiring manager sees.
  • You recently earned a new degree. Getting a fresh MSc, Ph.D., or MBA in your field is worth showing off. For example, if you’ve been a line manager for years but earned an MBA to qualify for an executive position, your education section should go first.
  • You are applying to academia. Usually, when applying for a research or teaching position in academia, you’ll need an academic CV , not a resume. In that case, your education will always come first.

16 Examples of Education on a Resume

Looking for inspiration?

We’ve compiled a list filled with real-life examples of how education can be listed on a resume, with practical examples for different types and levels of education:

#1. High School Education

If you’re a high school student, you might have some volunteer experience or extracurriculars you can show off. In that case, you can start by listing those sections, so long as they’re relevant to the job you’re applying for.

For example, if you volunteered with your local branch of the Red Cross, that’s a good experience to have when you’re applying to work at a shelter.

In most other cases, the education section would take the upper hand, and it would look something like this:

High School Diploma

Chapel Hill High School

2017 - 2021

  • Courses: AP Science, Mathematics, Advanced Chemistry

If you’re still in high school, you can disclose it in your resume by writing down your expected graduation year or otherwise specifying that you’re currently still there.

2021 - Present

#2. General Education Development

If you were homeschooled or haven’t graduated high school, the previous example won’t apply to you.

But if you still received a General Education Development certificate, you can mention that in your resume in the following way:

GED Diploma

Durham Literacy Center

Just like with high school education, you can include the location of your school or GED center, as well as any relevant courses, if you have enough space.

#3. Associate Degree

If you went to a community college or opted for a vocational program, you can list it in your education section the same as any other undergraduate degree.

Associate degrees are typically cheaper and take less time than a bachelor’s degree. They tend to be focused on specific occupations and place more emphasis on daily job functions. Other than that, they follow the same formatting as any other educational entry.

Let’s look at some real-life examples of different types of degrees at this level.

First, an Associate of Arts degree:

AA in Business Designation

Community College of Denver

2015 - 2016

Summa Cum Laude

Next, here’s how you would list an ongoing Associate’s of Applied Science degree:

AAS in Medical Assisting

2018 - Present

Some associate degrees are what’s known as “transfer degrees.” Here, the long-term goal is to transfer into a bachelor’s degree program.

Similarly, if you’ve completed accredited courses at a community college that can go towards a degree, you can list them under your education section, like this:

Medical Assisting Certificate

  • 30 credits completed

#4. Certificates

Certificates can be included on your resume, either as part of the education section or in a dedicated section.

Unlike broad academic degrees, certificates can show specialized expertise and commitment to professional development. They tend to demonstrate more focused, essential skills that are directly applicable to a particular job or industry.

Treat these entries the same as any other: list the name of the certificate, the institution or organization that issued it, and the year you obtained it.

Here’s an example of how to list a professional certificate in an education section:

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

American Institute of CPAs

And here’s how they would look in a separate section:

CERTIFICATES

  • Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) - National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2020
  • Certified Nutrition Coach - American Nutrition Association, 2023

But there are also other certificates you could list , such as after specialized software courses:

  • Maya Autodesk: Advanced 3D & Animation Udemy, 2022
  • Creation of Pixel Art Scenes for Video Games Domestika, 2023

#5. Undergraduate Degree

There are different ways to list a bachelor’s degree.

Let’s take a look at three different cases for a candidate with an engineering degree.

First, if you’ve graduated from university and received the degree, list it according to the following template:

B.Sc. Mechanical Engine ering

University of California, Berkeley

2002 - 2006

If you obtained a double major, you would write it down as:

B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering

If you have two or more majors, keep in mind that you should list the major that’s most relevant to the job you are applying to.

For example, if you majored in Applied Languages and International Relations, you should focus on the languages for a job as a translator.

Lastly, if you’re still attending college, just omit the finishing year when filling in your education section and add “Present” instead, like so:

But there are also different ways you can specify that you’re still studying. Instead of “Present,” you could write:

  • 2021 - Current
  • Expected Graduation: 2024
  • 2021 - 2024 (expected graduation)
  • 2021 - In progress
  • To Be Completed: 2024

#6. Graduate and Postgraduate Degrees

Graduate-level education is, in general, more detailed since it requires participating in a more focused area of research on top of your graduate-level work.

At this level, you probably contributed to the field with a dissertation of your own, which you should include in your resume.

Here’s an example:

Ph.D. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences

University of Rochester

Dissertation: Imaging, Computational Analysis, & Neural Representations in Young Children

Graduate and postgraduate education often includes scholarships , fellowships, or outside funding involved, which you might want to include in addition to all the general information about your degree.

Here are some real-life examples:

MBA in Business Administration

University of Maine

  • Avangrid Scholarship
  • Magna Cum Laude

When it comes to honors and awards, there are different ways you can list them to save space on your resume. Here’s an example that mentions them but leaves more space for the dissertation title:

MSc. in Information Systems

WU Vienna University of Economics & Business

Salutatorian, Summa Cum Laude

2015 - 2017

Dissertation: Leveraging User-Generated Content for Advertising Purposes Through Information Systems

And if you’re still studying, don’t forget to check out our student resume templates to get started on your job hunt.

#7. Unfinished Education

Even if you didn’t graduate from university, you can still mention it in your education section. Just be strategic about it.

If you have several years of relevant coursework from a degree program that relates to the job you're applying for, it can show that you’re knowledgeable even without the final credential.

B.Sc. in Civil Engineering

34 credits completed

2018 - 2019

However, if you only have basic courses or your degree isn’t relevant to the role, you might be better off skipping it altogether. There’s no need to draw attention to an unfinished degree if it won’t help you impress the hiring manager.

Do you still wonder something about education on a resume? Check out the answers to the most frequently asked questions here:

#1. How Do You Put Your Degree on a CV?

Adding your degree to your CV is pretty much the same as adding it to your resume.

List your degrees in reverse chronological order, with the most recent degree on top. Always include the essential information, such as the degree name, your major, the name of the university, and the years you attended. If relevant, you can include your GPA, thesis title, study abroad experiences, and academic honors.

#2. How Do You Write Down Your Bachelor’s Degree?

There are different ways that a bachelor's degree can be written down on your resume. Usually, there’s no need to spell out the full degree name, so there are ways you can abbreviate it for your resume. These include:

BA (Bachelor of Arts) BS (Bachelor of Science) BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)

Just use the specific abbreviation that matches your degree type. (E.g.: BSc Computer Science, BA History, BBA Economics, etc. )

#3. What If I Have an Education Gap or Took Time Off from Studies?

Treat any gaps in your education the same as you would treat an employment gap . Be upfront with the hiring manager and list the start and end dates to account for the time of the gap on your resume.

Use your cover letter to briefly explain the gap without going into too much detail. Hiring managers are understanding, and reasons like health, family, or professional experience are all common to justify education gaps.

#4. How Far Back Should I Go When Listing My Education History?

Generally, you only need to list basic information about your education if you graduated a long time ago. Your work experience and more recent achievements will have a lot more weight than details about your time in college 14 years ago.

For most professionals, listing just your highest degree is more than enough. However, an academic CV for scientific or research-heavy roles might need a more comprehensive educational background.

Key Takeaways

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the end of our article!

We’re confident you’re an expert on how to list education on a resume by now, but before we part ways, let’s quickly wrap up our main points:

  • Your education section belongs after your work experience section, though there are some exceptions.
  • If you don’t have any work experience, recently earned a relevant degree, or if you’re applying for a research-oriented position or in academia, the education section should be listed first.
  • When listing your educational entries, use a reverse chronological order. Start with the most recent degree you have and go backward from there.
  • If you have some sort of higher education, there’s no need to list your high school education.
  • Unless your GPA is exceptional, don’t list it. It might undermine your resume otherwise.
  • There are different ways to list your education, depending on the type of school you went to and what you want to highlight. Scroll back up if you want to see some examples.

A student meets with a career counselor.

A resume is a summary of your skills, knowledge, and relevant experience. You may need to have several versions of your resume specific to each type of job, internship, or educational program that you are pursuing.

Have your resume reviewed often to check for spelling, grammatical, and formatting inconsistencies. Meet with a career counselor to have your materials reviewed before applying .

How to Format a Resume

Consider the type of position that you are applying for when formatting your resume. A creative position may allow for some more unique formats while a financial or business-oriented position should focus on a traditional formatting layout.

Typically a resume should be one page, two pages if you possess extensive experiences related to your goals.

Recommended to be one inch but can be a minimum of 1/2 an inch.

Plain typeface like Arial or Times New Roman in 10-12 point font. Your name should be larger across the top of the page.

Whatever you decide, maintain consistency throughout the resume.

Start with a blank word processing document when creating your resume. Avoid using templates: these give an impersonal feel and can hinder what may be best for the experiences and information you have to include.

Begin bullet points with an action verb and keep all to 1-2 lines in length. Highlight responsibilities, skills, and accomplishments that relate to the positions you are applying for.

For career fairs , networking opportunities , and face-to-face interviews , use only resume-quality paper in white, off-white, or gray.

Contents of a Resume

It is recommended that information from high school be omitted from your professional resume by your junior year of college. Have something from high school that is incredibly relevant to the position you are applying for? Meet with a career counselor to discuss if you should include it or not.

Usually a concise statement summarizing the type of position you are seeking. This can be formatted several different ways; meet with career counselor to go over your options and how best to include this information.

List degrees in order with the most recent first. You can also consider including:

  • Minors or areas of concentration
  • Study Abroad
  • Relevant Courses

A Note on GPA:   Your GPA should match what is on your official University transcript. If your GPA is below a 3.0 consider listing your major and cumulative GPA. Contact the Registrar's office  to obtain an official copy of your transcript if needed.

Give details of your accomplishments and responsibilities rather than a general list of duties. Numbers make strong statements and can enhance credibility; these can show volume, percentages, and dollar amounts.

Make sure to list most relevant experience first. Did you have an internship in the same field? Was your part-time job related to the internship you are applying for? Consider the opening and organization when arranging your experience. It does not need to be in chronological order.

Need to gain experience? Learn about the best ways to get some experience  to include on your resume while a student.
