The Division of Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine,   in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine,   is seeking a highly motivated and well-organized Life Science Research Professional 4 to p erform functions and activities involved in managing major portions of complex research projects and significantly contribute to original scientific projects in the Czechowicz Lab.

The individual must be able to independently design, conduct and analyze experiments to further advance the Czechowicz lab research projects and be able to work across and lead interdisciplinary teams. The candidate must have a strong experimental background in translatable human/mouse immunology with particular emphasis on bone marrow/stem cell transplantation. The position will require expert level experience operating multiple manufacturers o f flow cytometers and must be able to routinely perform more than 20-color flow cytometry. The candidate must have expert level skills in flow cytometric cell sorting and associated data analysis to run independent projects and teach/assist others in research group . In addition, the lab’s research program is heavily reliant on next generation sequencing technology. As such, the candidate must have significant experience in sequencing experiments and associated data analysis. This position will also act as a Senior Scientist to the research lab and the candidate will be expected to provide administrative duties to both the PI and the research lab. I n addition to scientific research duties the ideal individual will also have considerable background and skills in management and will be expected to contribute to the administrative duties of the research lab. The ideal individual will understand and implement project reporting and funding analysis. As a senior scientist the individual will be expected to provide mentorship to new and lesser experienced staff members, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

The Division of Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics is a dynamic and stimulating place to work, focused on excellence in research, education and patient care. The Czechowicz lab strives to create a highly collaborative, dynamic and positive environment, with challenging and rewarding opportunities to make new scientific discoveries with translational potential. Projects specifically focus around developing an improved understanding and treatments for various pediatric and adult leukemias, in additional to non-malignant diseases such as Fanconi Anemia.

Duties include:

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
  • Design research approaches for the entire project, including background research, experimental design and execution, problem solving, and writing up for publication.
  • Conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods; oversee critical analyses of data from entire project.
  • Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
  • Participate in creating new research proposals, and prepare for submission for funding and grants.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
  • Contribute original ideas of major methodologies that alter the course of the investigation or develop innovative solution(s) to complex research problems.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; proceed without consultation with principal investigator to implement new techniques into research project.
  • Co-author publications; may present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
  • Supervise other staff, including hiring, performance management, and related duties. Provide instruction on complex techniques and direction on projects.

The pay range for this position working in the California Bay area is $111,000.00 to $134,000.00.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate degree (M.S., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D.) in biological sciences with emphasis on immunology. Prefer candidate with more than 10 years experience at the research bench with emphasis on the development of translatable immunological models within the fields of stem/bone marrow transplantation. Candidate must have at least 10 years experience operating and conducting flow cytometry based experiments. Candidate must have experience in immune repertoire experiments, NGS methodologies, and associated data analysis.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and six years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientific field and four years relevant experience; or PhD in related scientific field and two years of relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

·        Extensive understanding of scientific principles.

·        Expert level knowledge and skills in field of science related to research project.

·        General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.

·        Expert proficiency in flow cytometry to include analyzer and sorter.

·        Expert proficiency in mouse models of transplantation.

·        Expert proficiency in immune repertoire analysis, rt-PCR, and NGS technologies.

·        Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.

·        Ability to work under deadlines is essential.

·        Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.

·        Strong project management and leadership skills.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

·        Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.

·        Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.

·        Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.

·        Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.

·        Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.

·        Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
