Welcome to the Tilburg University Top 100 of Economics Schools Research Ranking
At present, there is a worldwide ranking for Business schools, carried out by the University of Texas, Dallas ( The UTD Top 100 Business School Research Rankings ), and a Finance ranking carried out by Arizona State University. There is no current worldwide ranking for Economics schools comparable to that of the UT Dallas. Recognizing this, the CentER for Research in Economics and Business at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, decided to create a worldwide ranking for Economics schools. Our database covers publications in 79 leading economics journals (see Journals for the list), since 2004. We provide a standard Top 100 of Economics schools, based on a subset of journals in the database, over a 5-year period. In the "sandbox" it is possible to create individual rankings using various combinations of all of the journals in the database, and to search the database by continent, by country, or per (individual) year.
If you click on a university, you will see a list of all publications attributed to that university, in the specified time period.

Tinbergen Institute offers a Research Master’s Program with three tracks: a track in economics, a track in econometrics and a track in finance.
- Course Registration
- Recent PhD Placements
Before the start of the academic year, refresher courses are offered in mathematics and programming in econometrics.
In the first year, students receive rigorous training in the core subjects and tools of economics, econometrics and finance. In the second year, students specialize in their choice from the institute’s many fields of research through field coursework and thesis research. In the second year of the program over 40 field courses are offered.
First year of the Curriculum
In the first year of the program, students have to complete 60 ECTS. At the start of the academic year, students choose between the Econometrics and Advanced Econometrics track and whether they will take the Finance track. The first-year of the curriculum includes 13 core courses , 2 field courses (to be chosen from a selection of field courses organized in block V) and the seminar series at the researh departments of the schools. The seminars allow students to explore potential supervisors and fields of specialization, and vice versa, allow potential supervisors to scout out talented students. Attendance at courses and seminar series is mandatory.
The standard Economics track consists of:
- Microeconomics (17 ECTS)
- Macroeconomics (16 ECTS)
- Econometrics, Statistics and Fundamental Mathematics (20 ECTS)
- 2 Field courses (6 ECTS)
- Introduction to TI Research Groups (1 ECTS)
Students in the Advanced Econometrics track take the Advanced Mathematics course, Asymptotic Theory instead of Statistics, and Advanced Econometrics instead of Econometrics. Students in the Finance track substitute two of the block III and IV courses in Macroeconomics or Microeconomics with Asset Pricing Theory and Corporate Finance Theory. The choice of the Finance track is independent of or can be combined with the Econometrics track.
Second Year of the Curriculum
In the second year, students have to:
- complete 27 ECTS of specialized coursework ;
- participate in the Research Clinic (3 ECTS) with lectures on Academic Writing, Presenting in Academica and Academic Integrity;
- write and publicly defend a thesis (30 ECTS). The thesis is the final examination of the research master program.
Students who wish to graduate in the Econometrics track choose the Advanced Econometrics courses in the first year; students who wish to graduate in the Finance track choose the courses in Asset Pricing and Corporate Finance Theory in the first year (see above).
Over 30 field courses will be in offered in 2023-2024.

CentER's Research Master's program in Economics offers two years of graduate level coursework and research training in economics. It prepares you for PhD dissertation research. The program is intergrated with CentER's three-year PhD program to comprise the five-year Graduate Program in Economics.
The first year of the Research Master's program in Economics is fully devoted to rigorous training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. It equips you with a sound basis in economic and econometric theory and methods.
The second year of the Research Master's program in Economics is evenly split between specialized coursework and a first major research paper, the Research Master thesis. This year allows you to explore the many research areas available at CentER, to fully develop your research interests, and to match up with one or more advisers that share your interests.
Career Perspective
The Research Master's program in Economics is fully dedicated to preparing students for PhD thesis research at CentER. To this end, we limit the inflow to a small number of excellent students with a sincere interest in pursuing a PhD at CentER. We expect at least 75% of these students to successfully complete the Research Master in Economics and continue with PhD thesis research in a fully funded PhD position at CentER.
However, the graduates of the Research Master's program in Economics that do not continue with a PhD project, may also start a professional career, typically at government organizations (National Departments, Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, regional organizations) and in the consultancy or financial sector.
After completing the PhD, many students participate in CentER's academic job placement procedure and find jobs at universities, research institutes, and government institutions around the world, as well as at private companies.
In the PhD phase, most accepted PhD students become university employees earning a gross salary over more than Euro 85000 over three years and are granted pension rights.
All incoming students should carefully check our document on academic preparations, and resolve any deficiencies, before classes start.
