Methodology

To identify the top 10 best sports management Ph.D programs, we started with a search on College Navigator to find out which schools offered these programs in an online format. We also consulted NASSM, the North American Society for Sport Management, which keeps a list of universities offering Ph.D Sport Management programs in the U.S. We compared student to faculty ratios, average graduate tuition rates, graduation rates, and accreditations using College Navigator. While graduation rates are provided only for first time undergraduate students, we felt this was still important to consider for our list an indicator of the level of support students receive while earning their degree. To be considered for our list, schools must hold regional accreditation, feature hands on training and internship or field experiences, and have a curriculum taught by doctorate level faculty. Where there are ties, we favored the school with the lower graduate tuition rate. From our list, we created a rating system as seen below to select our top 10 doctorate programs in sport management.

Sport Management is a growing academic discipline in the United States as well as globally.  The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sport Management at Troy University is a terminal degree focusing on student comprehension and interpretation of contemporary, theoretical and applied studies within the field of Sport Management. The mission of the program is to prepare the graduate for a broad range of sport management-related positions to include, but not limited to higher education, research, professional or amateur athletics, and professional sport industry.  The doctoral program in Sport Management is the is one of the few Ph.D. programs that is offered primarily online in the United States. The program concentrates on developing students to generate the research, critical thinking, and teaching skills necessary for them to be successful in the sport industry and higher education. The coursework in the Ph.D. program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of sport management that is intended to build upon each student’s interests. Through areas of specialized coursework and doctoral seminars taught by graduate sport management faculty members, the program offers flexibility for students to analyze a wide variety of opportunities and interests within the discipline of sport management (i.e., organizational management, finance, legal aspects, and marketing of sports). Official scores from nationally standardized aptitude examinations, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Miller’s Analogy Test (MAT), General Management Admissions Test (GMAT), or Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) are not required for admissions consideration; however, official scores may be submitted at the time of application by those students who feel the results of their examinations will enhance their admissions application.

• The goal of the writing sample is to measure the applicant’s ability to write clearly and succinctly in an academic fashion. The writing sample may include a thesis completed by the student, a significant research or case study class project, preferably written at the graduate level. It is expected that the applicant be either the first or second author if the submission was a group project. The paper must be double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font with 1 inch margins on all sides. Since the American Psychological Association (APA) style is followed in all written assignments in the Ph.D. program, it is recommended that the sample also be written in APA format. However, other writing styles, including but not limited to Chicago, Modern Language Association (MLA), Turbian, AMA Manual or other accepted research writing styles, will be considered. Note: The writing sample could also include an accepted or published research that the applicant was either the sole or co-author of a research project. The applicant must submit a pdf of the paper or a link as proof of publication.

Applications to the Ph.D. program may be submitted twice per academic year, once in fall and once is spring. The applicant must submit an application to the Troy University Graduate School. After all required documentation has been submitted, the applicant’s entire application packet will be reviewed for admission into the Doctoral Program. No pre-requisites will be required for admission other than the applicant must have attained a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. In order to be given full consideration, all requested materials must be received by the deadlines listed below:

Consistent with other terminal degree programs at TROY, the Sport Management doctoral student will have a maximum time for degree completion of eight years, inclusive of completing dissertation requirements. However, it is important to note that a full-time student (i.e., taking 6 credits per term) may be able to complete coursework in two (2) years. Additionally, dissertation may require 1-2 years to fully complete.

As a result, students can finish the program in as little as three (3 years). To do so, the students must communicate with their major advisor on a regular basis.

Students pursuing a PhD in Sport Management develop scholarly and research competence, culminating in an original doctoral dissertation contributing to the body of knowledge in sport business. The program is designed for students who intend to make their careers as scholars, teachers, researchers, and professionals in economics, marketing, philanthropy, and urban development, as they pertain to sport business.

Each doctoral student works closely with a faculty advisor from the beginning of their degree program. Under their faculty advisor’s guidance, they are expected to take relevant coursework, engage in relevant research experiences (lab rotations, independent study projects, etc.), generate research ideas, and complete a research dissertation prior to graduation. 

A principal goal of doctoral student training is achieving competence as an independent scholar. This entails not only proficiency in research but in the dissemination of knowledge. To achieve this, students learn to guide the learning of others as a Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) or Graduate Student Instructor (GSI). 

Doctoral students and their faculty advisors will form a Guidance Committee, Qualifying Examination Committee, and a Dissertation Committee to provide advice and evaluate student progress at successive stages of the program. 

Sport Management PhD Curriculum

PhD students choose from a set of core courses in Kinesiology, as well as cognate courses from other units, and complete a minimum of 30 pre-candidacy credits beyond the master's level. Qualifying examinations must be passed before advancing to candidacy, after which the student completes an original doctoral dissertation. A minimum of 50 credits including pre-candidacy and candidacy work must be completed to graduate.

The courses you take will vary, depending on your educational goals. Courses taken for graduate credit will carry SM or KINESLGY program codes, and are numbered 500 and above.

The College Sport Research Institute's mission is to encourage and support interdisciplinary and inter-university college sport research, serve as the research consortium for college sport researchers from across the United States, and disseminate college sport research results to academics, college practitioners, and the general public.

Admissions Process

Based on a three-year period of residential study beyond completion of a master's degree in sport and entertainment management or a related field, the Ph.D. program requires a minimum of 60 credit hours beyond the master's degree. All applications for the program must be submitted online through the  Graduate School . Applications will be reviewed and voted on individually by the department's graduate faculty based on:

The Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management

The Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management (KNSM) is one the largest academic department at Texas A&M University, generating over 90,000 credit hours and 200,000 (modified) weighted student credit hours each year.

As one of four departments in the College of Education and Human Development, KNSM is currently home to over 3,000 undergraduate students, 246 master’s students, 70 doctoral students (3,921 total), 179 minor students, 103 faculty members, 32 staff members and 90 funded graduate assistants.

For nearly 30 years, Texas A&M University has been preparing Ph.D. students to excel in the scholarship of sport. Requirements

Research experience requirement.

Prior to scheduling the dissertation proposal meeting, each student will:

• Have presented, as sole or first author, at least one presentation at a state, regional, or national conference; and
• Will be an author on at least one research paper submitted to a peer-reviewed national or international journal.

In addition, dissertations will not be signed by the department head until the student has submitted as first author a manuscript (or manuscripts) of the study to a national or international refereed journal (or journals).

Minimum Hour Requirement

The Ph.D. requires a minimum of 67 hours beyond a masters or 96 hours beyond a baccalaureate degree .

Depending on the preparation and experience, doctoral students may be required to complete undergraduate or graduate leveling work in addition to the minimum Ph.D. requirements.

About the Program

Isenberg’s PhD in sport management is a full-time, residential program that prepares students for careers in academia. Students receive broad training in research methods and learn to apply advanced business understanding to sport subject matter. With small class sizes, students enjoy individualized instruction from faculty. Valuable teaching opportunities prime students to become educators at leading institutions.

Students generally complete a PhD in Sport Management within 4-5 years. Students must pass both a qualifying and comprehensive examination, and complete three years of teaching at Isenberg. During the final years students research, write, and defend a dissertation.

Students must take 48 credits of coursework, which includes classes in theory and research methods, research electives, and minor classes.

Students in the Ph.D. program in Sport Management and Policy are passionate about investigating a variety of managerial, business, and societal topics in the context of sport. The program is a full-time on-campus program which focuses on research and prepares students for a career as a professor at leading colleges and universities across the globe.

The program typically takes four years to complete and students focus on developing their research skills over the entirety of their stay in the program. During the first two years, students take coursework in research methodology, statistics, sport management, and their research specialization area. The degree program structure allows students the ability to design a unique curriculum that fits their specific area of research interest. At the end of the second year, students are required to complete a written and oral comprehensive exam. In the final two years of the program, students focus on writing a dissertation. Preferred applicants will have achieved an exemplary level of success in their bachelor’s and master’s degrees from regionally accredited colleges and universities. The Sport Management Concentration in the Learning, Leadership, and Education Policy (LLEP) Ph.D. prepares individuals to:

Admission Requirements

• Master's Degree in Sport Administration or a related field (with a cumulative GPA of a 3.00 or higher)
• Three (3) reference names
• One (1) letter of recommendation
• Applicants will choose from a list of topics.
• Applicant will then research that topic and support with 4-6 sources.
• Applicant will write a 2-3 page paper (roughly 1,000 words), must cite in APA, and include a reference page.
• Why UC? What are their career goals related to completing this degree? Which faculty member are they wanting as an advisor?.

Our program will support student career goals that range from faculty, administrative, practitioner/athletics, and alt-academic careers. We will provide resources in our seminar classes, particularly our SMGT 9040: Professional Development and Career Exploration course, that will inform students of their options and resources across a wealth of career outlets.

We also have a dedicated Doctoral Sport Administration Group that will house regular meetings to discuss theory, teaching, research, service, career ideas, conferences, interviewing, negotiation, and other topics designed to help students be successful during and after they’ve completed our program.

Entrance Requirements

Entrance information concerning admission and program requirements is provided in the University of New Mexico Graduate bulletin. In addition, the Department of Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences has developed a guide to be used by all department graduate students to ensure that all graduate requirements are satisfied at the appropriate times. The criteria for admission to the graduate programs in Sport Administration include the following:

• Master's degree for Ph.D. program.
• GPA in most recent degree of 3.0 or better.
• Official GRE or GMAT Scores.
• Three letters of recommendation.
• Letter of intent. This should consist of a written statement of career goals and area of interest in Sport Administration.

Applicants must have a master’s degree with a grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from a regionally accredited institution or a foreign university with substantially equivalent bachelor’s degree requirements. Students generally complete a PhD in Sport Management within 4-5 years. Students must pass both a qualifying and comprehensive examination, and complete three years of teaching at Isenberg. During the final years students research, write, and defend a dissertation.

Students must take 48 credits of coursework, which includes classes in theory and research methods, research electives, and minor classes.

This section is devoted to the management of sports teams as a whole, because advertisers have long advertised at sporting events and teams have seen it as a way to generate more money. As interest in sports grew, and cable television channels ESPN and other specialized channels were established, this relationship between team, player, and advertiser developed even more. We have included marketing related material as it relates to the promotion of sporting events, teams, and athletes as well as the promotion of products and services through sporting events, teams, and athletes.

The increasing popularity of sports has meant an increase in the visibility of teams and most importantly, its athletes. This has meant advertisers have found it increasingly valuable to team up with sports stars to make their brands even more visible. One person closely associated with the history and development of sports marketing was Mark McCormack the founder and chairman of International Management Group (now IMG), who was a lawyer who represented a number of athletes including pro golfer Arnie Palmer. He was able to secure endorsement deals for many of his clients and under his guidance Palmer went so far as to establish Arnold Palmer Enterprises.

There are two emerging areas of research - gambling/gaming and the future of sports fans. In the U.S. sports betting has been fraught but that has been changing as various jurisdictions have legalized sports betting. The major sports leagues have becoming more interested in being directly involved in some fashion.

Another area of research that has been a big concern for major sports leagues, is bringing new fans on board. This has become critical when it comes to Generation Z, who do not get their news from traditional sources and who consume entertainment more online than through more traditional TV and cable avenues. While the NBA has a significant percentage of its fan base below the age of 35, other sports leagues have begun to address the issue. The NHL has created a Gen Z focus group while the NFL has a Social Media summit to discuses trends, issues, and solutions. In 2020, Major League Baseball brought in Gen Z researcher Mark Beal for their Baseball Speaker Series with a presentation titled “Engaging Gen Z With Purpose Will Set Major League Baseball Up for Success in the Future.”

When doing research in this area, there are different strategies to gather information in order to develop a complete picture. Look for information that sheds light on the relationship between fans and their teams—sport consumer behavior (SCB) and look at specific examples of what athletes and teams are branding. Keep in mind that information may reside in places outside of sports and sports marketing literature because broadcasting, general advertising/marketing, social media, digital platforms, ticket sales, and community relations have their own literature where the topic is also discussed.

Faculty Focus Friday is a Q&A series that highlights individual faculty members in various academic programs around Spalding University. This week’s featured faculty member is Dr. Eric C. Street, professor of Sports Management in the MBA program .

Why did you decide to teach at Spalding? What do you like about Spalding in particular?

I came to Spalding because I like the small college atmosphere and the 11:1 Student/Faculty Ratio. I like to get to know my students and help them in their journey any way possible from their choice to attend Spalding, degree completion, and job search upon graduation. I also wanted the opportunity to work within Esports on campus, as I have with the club team and varsity team. I also LOVE LOUISVILLE!! It is such a thriving city with a historical sports background including the Muhammad Ali Center and The Kentucky Derby!

What is your academic specialty, areas of expertise or research?

My area of expertise is Management and Sports Management. I also serve as the Assistant Esports Coach. My research agenda is mostly Esports business related.

Why is the MBA program a good option for students to consider?

I believe the flexibility and course specialization is second to none and the schedule at Spalding is very unique where you are given a week break after every six-week session. You are taught by world class faculty here at Spalding and industry leaders in their respective fields. In the business school in particular, we are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the times. Just this year we added coursework in AI and Esports.

What’s an interesting thing you keep in your office?

A PlayStation that I use with the Esports Club events that we hold once per session. My John Stockton and Karl Malone Funko pops would be a close second!

What major lessons do you hope students take from this program to implement in their personal and professional lives?

The biggest lesson is to never give up on yourself or your dreams. Be patient and give 100% of yourself towards your goals and doors will open that you never knew existed! You may end up somewhere better than you had planned. Professionally, network as much as possible and use the contacts in your program. Just in the Sports Management program we have several contacts with professional sports organizations.

Spalding’s mission is to meet the needs of the times, to emphasize service and to promote peace and justice. How will your teaching style, your research, your class, or your curriculum support the mission of Spalding?

I meet the needs and times by using current business examples in each class meeting. I take a lot of time to prepare for each class session which includes research into current events and trends that I can use as examples in class. For online, such as the MBA program, I make videos and post current articles/ videos to better make the connection of course material to real world business problems that are current.

The Master of Arts in Physical Education and Single Subject Teaching Credential program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to teach physical education and coach at the K-12, junior college, and four-year university levels.

Admission Requirements—Domestic Applicants

The  university graduate  and program admission requirements below must be met before an application is considered complete.

• Graduate application for admission
• $45 nonrefundable application fee
• Official transcripts from all institutions leading to and awarding the applicant’s bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and all postbaccalaureate study An official transcript is one that Azusa Pacific University receives unopened in an envelope sealed by the former institution and that bears the official seal of the college or university. A cumulative minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average on the posted degree is required for regular admission status. Provisional admittance may be granted to individuals with a lower GPA if competency can be shown through multiple measures.
• Two recommendations that assess competence and character. Appropriate recommendations include those who have supervised the applicant’s leadership or teaching experience with children/youth in public or private settings, an employer who directly supervised the applicant, or one faculty/academic reference. References from neighbors, friends, and relatives are not appropriate, unless they have served as supervisors. Additional letters are optional.
• Résumé (preferred) or statement of experience including the most relevant work and volunteer experience
• One- to two-page personal statement addressing the following topics: experiences from the applicant’s background that may enhance the teaching experience; the most rewarding and challenging aspects of working with youth; why the applicant wants to teach; preferred grade level and content areas and why; and how the applicant envisions supporting the success of all students and contributing to the profession. Written communication skills will be assessed along with content.
• Proof of Certificate of Clearance (COC). Applicants for Summer or Fall Terms must have a COC valid through January 31. Applicants for the Spring Term must have a COC valid through June 30. Applicants are encouraged to begin this step as soon as possible to allow time for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to process your information.
• Proof the Basic Skills Requirement has been satisfied
• Proof of subject matter preparation or proof of paid registration for the next appropriate California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) administration (view  teacher test preparation resources )

After all admission materials have been received by the  Student Services Center , the faculty or department chair reviews the applicant’s file. The applicant is notified in writing of the admission decision.

Admission Requirements—International Applicants

Azusa Pacific University is authorized under federal law by the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services and the U.S. Department of State to enroll nonimmigrant, alien undergraduate and graduate students. APU issues and administers both the I-20 and DS 2019 (F-1 and J-1 status documents respectively).

To apply for a graduate program at APU, the following requirements must be fulfilled in addition to meeting the domestic applicant and  program-specific admission requirements  specified above.

International applicants must also:

• Demonstrate proficiency in English through a placement test with the  Academic Success Center , or through a TOEFL/IELTS score that meets program-specific requirements. Refer to APU’s  English proficiency requirements  to learn more. Request that official test scores be sent to APU. All other forms of proof indicated in the English proficiency requirements must be submitted directly to International Services.
• Provide a  Graduate Affidavit of Financial Support (PDF)  and a bank statement from within the last six months proving financial ability to pay for education costs through personal, family, or sponsor resources.
• Submit a copy of a valid passport showing biographical data, including your name, country of citizenship, date of birth, and other legal information.
• Get foreign transcripts evaluated. International credentials (transcripts, certificates, diplomas, and degrees) must be evaluated by a foreign transcript evaluation agency. View our policy and a list of approved  Foreign Transcript Evaluation Agencies .

Physical Education Scholarships

Kyle ian macdonald memorial scholarship.

This scholarship is in honor of Kyle Ian MacDonald, MS ’15, a graduate of APU’s   MS in Physical Education program . The intent of this scholarship is to financially support students in the pursuit of teaching and mentoring students through coaching, physical education, exercise science, and sport management. Awards range from $2,500-$2,800. To apply, fill out the   Kyle Ian MacDonald Memorial Scholarship Application (PDF)   by August 1 and email the completed form to   [email protected] .

Physical Education MOU Partner Discounts

Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) are agreements between Azusa Pacific University and various entities (such as cities, counties, and businesses) that allow for employees of those entities, their spouses, and their children (up to age 26) to receive a tuition discount for select Azusa Pacific programs. MOUs are a great way for employers to promote the professional development and advancement of their employees.

The   School of Education   and the   School of Behavioral Sciences   offer a 10 percent tuition discount for eligible employees of the following districts, counties, and charter schools who will start in a   graduate education program   through the School of Education or a   graduate physical education program   through the School of Behavioral Sciences.

Please note:   The School of Education’s doctoral program (Ed.D. in Educational Leadership) is not eligible for any MOU discount. The discount cannot be combined with other institutional aid.

School of Behavioral Sciences Alumni Tuition Discounts

APU’s   School of Behavioral Sciences   offers an alumni tuition discount for APU alumni starting in the following graduate programs:

• Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology: Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT)
• Master of Arts in Physical Education
• Master of Science in Child Life
• Master of Science in Physical Education
• Master of Science in Research Psychology and Data Analysis

Students must be in good academic standing and maintain satisfactory academic progress with a minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0. Students must be enrolled at least half-time. If qualifications are met, the discount may be renewed each term. APU will pay $500 per term (up to $2,000 over the course of the program). Note: Award and eligibility are applicable for the 2022-23 academic year and apply to students admitted beginning fall 2020. The discount is subject to change.
