While Sandel argues that pursuing perfection through genetic engineering would decrease our sense of humility, he claims that the sense of solidarity we would lose is also important.

This thesis summarizes several points in Sandel’s argument, but it does not make a claim about how we should understand his argument. A reader who read Sandel’s argument would not also need to read an essay based on this descriptive thesis.  

Broad thesis (arguable, but difficult to support with evidence) 

Michael Sandel’s arguments about genetic engineering do not take into consideration all the relevant issues.

This is an arguable claim because it would be possible to argue against it by saying that Michael Sandel’s arguments do take all of the relevant issues into consideration. But the claim is too broad. Because the thesis does not specify which “issues” it is focused on—or why it matters if they are considered—readers won’t know what the rest of the essay will argue, and the writer won’t know what to focus on. If there is a particular issue that Sandel does not address, then a more specific version of the thesis would include that issue—hand an explanation of why it is important.  

Arguable thesis with analytical claim 

While Sandel argues persuasively that our instinct to “remake” (54) ourselves into something ever more perfect is a problem, his belief that we can always draw a line between what is medically necessary and what makes us simply “better than well” (51) is less convincing.

This is an arguable analytical claim. To argue for this claim, the essay writer will need to show how evidence from the article itself points to this interpretation. It’s also a reasonable scope for a thesis because it can be supported with evidence available in the text and is neither too broad nor too narrow.  

Arguable thesis with normative claim 

Given Sandel’s argument against genetic enhancement, we should not allow parents to decide on using Human Growth Hormone for their children.

This thesis tells us what we should do about a particular issue discussed in Sandel’s article, but it does not tell us how we should understand Sandel’s argument.

  • Is the thesis truly arguable? Does it speak to a genuine dilemma in the source, or would most readers automatically agree with it?  
  • Is the thesis too obvious? Again, would most or all readers agree with it without needing to see your argument?  
  • Is the thesis complex enough to require a whole essay's worth of argument?  
  • Is the thesis supportable with evidence from the text rather than with generalizations or outside research?  
  • Would anyone want to read a paper in which this thesis was developed? That is, can you explain what this paper is adding to our understanding of a problem, question, or topic?

Almost all of us—even if we don’t do it consciously—look early in an essay for a one- or two-sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is to follow. We refer to that condensation as a thesis statement.

How to Generate a Thesis Statement if the Topic is Assigned

Almost all assignments, no matter how complicated, can be reduced to a single question. Your first step, then, is to distill the assignment into a specific question. For example, if your assignment is, “Write a report to the local school board explaining the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class,” turn the request into a question like, “What are the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class?” After you’ve chosen the question your essay will answer, compose one or two complete sentences answering that question.

Q: “What are the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class?” A: “The potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class are . . .”
A: “Using computers in a fourth-grade class promises to improve . . .”

The answer to the question is the thesis statement for the essay.

How to Generate a Thesis Statement if the Topic is not Assigned

Even if your assignment doesn’t ask a specific question, your thesis statement still needs to answer a question about the issue you’d like to explore. In this situation, your job is to figure out what question you’d like to write about.

A good thesis statement will usually include the following four attributes:

  • take on a subject upon which reasonable people could disagree
  • deal with a subject that can be adequately treated given the nature of the assignment
  • express one main idea
  • assert your conclusions about a subject

Let’s see how to generate a thesis statement for a social policy paper.

Brainstorm the topic . Let’s say that your class focuses upon the problems posed by changes in the dietary habits of Americans. You find that you are interested in the amount of sugar Americans consume.

You start out with a thesis statement like this:

Sugar consumption.

This fragment isn’t a thesis statement. Instead, it simply indicates a general subject. Furthermore, your reader doesn’t know what you want to say about sugar consumption.

Narrow the topic . Your readings about the topic, however, have led you to the conclusion that elementary school children are consuming far more sugar than is healthy.

You change your thesis to look like this:

Reducing sugar consumption by elementary school children.

This fragment not only announces your subject, but it focuses on one segment of the population: elementary school children. Furthermore, it raises a subject upon which reasonable people could disagree, because while most people might agree that children consume more sugar than they used to, not everyone would agree on what should be done or who should do it. You should note that this fragment is not a thesis statement because your reader doesn’t know your conclusions on the topic.

Take a position on the topic. After reflecting on the topic a little while longer, you decide that what you really want to say about this topic is that something should be done to reduce the amount of sugar these children consume.

You revise your thesis statement to look like this:

More attention should be paid to the food and beverage choices available to elementary school children.

This statement asserts your position, but the terms more attention and food and beverage choices are vague.

Use specific language . You decide to explain what you mean about food and beverage choices , so you write:

Experts estimate that half of elementary school children consume nine times the recommended daily allowance of sugar.

This statement is specific, but it isn’t a thesis. It merely reports a statistic instead of making an assertion.

Make an assertion based on clearly stated support. You finally revise your thesis statement one more time to look like this:

Because half of all American elementary school children consume nine times the recommended daily allowance of sugar, schools should be required to replace the beverages in soda machines with healthy alternatives.

Notice how the thesis answers the question, “What should be done to reduce sugar consumption by children, and who should do it?” When you started thinking about the paper, you may not have had a specific question in mind, but as you became more involved in the topic, your ideas became more specific. Your thesis changed to reflect your new insights.

How to Tell a Strong Thesis Statement from a Weak One

Remember that your thesis needs to show your conclusions about a subject. For example, if you are writing a paper for a class on fitness, you might be asked to choose a popular weight-loss product to evaluate. Here are two thesis statements:

There are some negative and positive aspects to the Banana Herb Tea Supplement.

This is a weak thesis statement. First, it fails to take a stand. Second, the phrase negative and positive aspects is vague.

Because Banana Herb Tea Supplement promotes rapid weight loss that results in the loss of muscle and lean body mass, it poses a potential danger to customers.

This is a strong thesis because it takes a stand, and because it's specific.

2. A strong thesis statement justifies discussion.

Your thesis should indicate the point of the discussion. If your assignment is to write a paper on kinship systems, using your own family as an example, you might come up with either of these two thesis statements:

My family is an extended family.

This is a weak thesis because it merely states an observation. Your reader won’t be able to tell the point of the statement, and will probably stop reading.

While most American families would view consanguineal marriage as a threat to the nuclear family structure, many Iranian families, like my own, believe that these marriages help reinforce kinship ties in an extended family.

This is a strong thesis because it shows how your experience contradicts a widely-accepted view. A good strategy for creating a strong thesis is to show that the topic is controversial. Readers will be interested in reading the rest of the essay to see how you support your point.

3. A strong thesis statement expresses one main idea.

Readers need to be able to see that your paper has one main point. If your thesis statement expresses more than one idea, then you might confuse your readers about the subject of your paper. For example:

Companies need to exploit the marketing potential of the Internet, and Web pages can provide both advertising and customer support.

This is a weak thesis statement because the reader can’t decide whether the paper is about marketing on the Internet or Web pages. To revise the thesis, the relationship between the two ideas needs to become more clear. One way to revise the thesis would be to write:

Because the Internet is filled with tremendous marketing potential, companies should exploit this potential by using Web pages that offer both advertising and customer support.

This is a strong thesis because it shows that the two ideas are related. Hint: a great many clear and engaging thesis statements contain words like because , since , so , although , unless , and however .

4. A strong thesis statement is specific.

A thesis statement should show exactly what your paper will be about, and will help you keep your paper to a manageable topic. For example, if you're writing a seven-to-ten page paper on hunger, you might say:

World hunger has many causes and effects.

This is a weak thesis statement for two major reasons. First, world hunger can’t be discussed thoroughly in seven to ten pages. Second, many causes and effects is vague. You should be able to identify specific causes and effects. A revised thesis might look like this:

Hunger persists in Glandelinia because jobs are scarce and farming in the infertile soil is rarely profitable.

This is a strong thesis statement because it narrows the subject to a more specific and manageable topic, and it also identifies the specific causes for the existence of hunger.

You may hear about Master degree candidates writing a thesis, and that is an entire paper–not to be confused with the thesis statement, which is typically one sentence that contains your paper’s focus.

Typically the last sentence of your introductory paragraph, the thesis statement serves as the roadmap for your essay. When your reader gets to the thesis statement, they should have a clear outline of your main point, as well as the information you’ll be presenting in order to either prove or support your point. 

The thesis statement should not be confused for a topic sentence , which is the first sentence of every paragraph in your essay. If you need help writing topic sentences, numerous resources are available. Topic sentences should go along with your thesis statement, though.

Step 1: Decide what kind of paper you’re writing

When you’re assigned an essay, there are several different types you may get. Argumentative essays are designed to get the reader to agree with you on a topic. Informative or expository essays present information to the reader. Analytical essays offer up a point and then expand on it by analyzing relevant information. Thesis statements can look and sound different based on the type of paper you’re writing. For example:

  • Argumentative: The United States needs a viable third political party to decrease bipartisanship, increase options, and help reduce corruption in government.
  • Informative: The Libertarian party has thrown off elections before by gaining enough support in states to get on the ballot and by taking away crucial votes from candidates.
  • Analytical: An analysis of past presidential elections shows that while third party votes may have been the minority, they did affect the outcome of the elections in 2020, 2016, and beyond.

Step 2: Figure out what point you want to make

Once you know what type of paper you’re writing, you then need to figure out the point you want to make with your thesis statement, and subsequently, your paper. In other words, you need to decide to answer a question about something, such as:

  • What impact did reality TV have on American society?
  • How has the musical Hamilton affected perception of American history?
  • Why do I want to major in [chosen major here]?

If you have an argumentative essay, then you will be writing about an opinion. To make it easier, you may want to choose an opinion that you feel passionate about so that you’re writing about something that interests you. For example, if you have an interest in preserving the environment, you may want to choose a topic that relates to that. 

If you’re writing your college essay and they ask why you want to attend that school, you may want to have a main point and back it up with information, something along the lines of:

“Attending Harvard University would benefit me both academically and professionally, as it would give me a strong knowledge base upon which to build my career, develop my network, and hopefully give me an advantage in my chosen field.”

Step 3: Determine what information you’ll use to back up your point

Once you have the point you want to make, you need to figure out how you plan to back it up throughout the rest of your essay. Without this information, it will be hard to either prove or argue the main point of your thesis statement. If you decide to write about the Hamilton example, you may decide to address any falsehoods that the writer put into the musical, such as:

“The musical Hamilton, while accurate in many ways, leaves out key parts of American history, presents a nationalist view of founding fathers, and downplays the racism of the times.”

Once you’ve written your initial working thesis statement, you’ll then need to get information to back that up. For example, the musical completely leaves out Benjamin Franklin, portrays the founding fathers in a nationalist way that is too complimentary, and shows Hamilton as a staunch abolitionist despite the fact that his family likely did own slaves. 

Step 4: Revise and refine your thesis statement before you start writing

Read through your thesis statement several times before you begin to compose your full essay. You need to make sure the statement is ironclad, since it is the foundation of the entire paper. Edit it or have a peer review it for you to make sure everything makes sense and that you feel like you can truly write a paper on the topic. Once you’ve done that, you can then begin writing your paper.

When writing a thesis statement, there are some common pitfalls you should avoid so that your paper can be as solid as possible. Make sure you always edit the thesis statement before you do anything else. You also want to ensure that the thesis statement is clear and concise. Don’t make your reader hunt for your point. Finally, put your thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph and have your introduction flow toward that statement. Your reader will expect to find your statement in its traditional spot.

A good thesis statement restates the question and answers it:

A good thesis statement should give more than one solution to the problem in question:

How to Write an Effective Thesis Statement

What Is a Thesis Statement?

A thesis statement is typically one sentence that appears in the first paragraph of an essay that captures the essay’s purpose. Think of the thesis statement as a one-sentence summary that tells the reader exactly what an essay says.

Rather than writing your essay like a puzzle, keeping the reader in suspense about what conclusion you’ll reach by the end, use the thesis statement like a treasure map to give the reader a sense of your essay’s direction. Tell them the conclusion up front, so they know where your piece is headed.

Once you’ve done your research and found your sources, craft a thesis statement that clearly indicates the direction your essay will take. As you write, think about how each paragraph connects to your thesis. If you’re struggling to understand how a particular idea relates directly to the thesis statement, it may be a sign that you’ve diverged from the purpose of the essay.

A thesis statement is a one-sentence declaration of intention — a summation of the main idea your essay will explain at length. An effective thesis statement will make a unique claim or seek to answer an important question.

Tips for Writing a Good Thesis Statement

Be specific.

Essays should be based on a specific argument. Check your thesis statement to see if the central idea of your writing is too vague. If you argue for something overly general — for example, an argument that all pop music is bad — your essay will try to conquer too many ideas and be unfocused.

Refine your argument to be more specific. Perhaps you’ll say that pop music suffers from repetitive chord progressions or that pop songs have unimaginative lyrics. These narrower claims allow you to easily marshall evidence in support of your thesis.

Make a Clear Argument

Often, you need to write a paper within a very limited set of parameters — usually a few thousand words at most. Within a prescribed framework, you won’t have space on the page to fully address multiple arguments.

If a reader can’t ascertain the direction your essay will take from reading the thesis statement alone, then revise it to ensure your main point is stated plainly. If you’re struggling to make your argument clear, try formulating your thesis statement using this template: “In this paper, I argue that __________.”

Because some writing instructors forbid or disapprove of the first-person point of view in academic essays, you may have to change your thesis statement later; however, using this template reminds you what your argument should be, which is a helpful early drafting technique.

Take a Strong Stance

When writing your essay’s thesis statement, ask whether it is a statement that can be argued with. For example, if your thesis statement is, “Computers are a popular technology in today’s society,” your essay might not be advancing a position so much as stating an objectively true fact.

Most essays will require you to take a stance, not make an observation, so craft a thesis statement that actually puts forward a unique perspective.

Question Your Assumptions

As you formulate the thesis statement of your essay, ask yourself what assumptions your argument is based on. In other words, what must your readers assume to be true before they can even begin to accept your argument?

Be particularly aware of your intended audience. For example, does your argument rely on a religious or moral code to prove that it is inherently right? If you are writing a paper for a class in Christian ministry, a dogmatic argument might be appropriate; for a sociology paper, however, such arguments don’t hold water.

Think about the ways in which your argument may not hold up for people who don’t subscribe to your viewpoints, then revise or re-approach your thesis statement so that your argument doesn’t depend on those assumptions.

Don’t Hide Your Thesis

Keep in mind that your thesis statement should come near the beginning of your essay. Conventional wisdom dictates that it should appear by the end of the first paragraph, though the exact positioning may vary, depending on how much introduction your specific essay requires. In any case, it should generally come at the end of your introduction to the material — the final statement your reader sees at the beginning, before moving into the body of your argument.

To some extent, it’s also important not to overthink your thesis statement. Don’t dress up a thesis statement with fancy language, and don’t be too clever in how you set the stage for your argument; both of these strategies sometimes disguise a weak central thesis. Whoever your professor is, they will appreciate you getting to the point in a clear, concise manner.

Types of Thesis Statements

Argumentative essay.

Argumentative essays ask students to make the case for a particular perspective, or to persuade the reader to agree with the writer’s point of view by the time they reach the essay’s conclusion. In these essays, a thesis statement should be a clear picture of the argument you will make over the course of your essay.

In an American history class, you are asked to argue about the dominant cause of the War of 1812. Your thesis statement might look like, “The War of 1812 was a direct result of British arms sales to native tribes in the American West.”

In an ethics class, you are asked to argue about the moral obligation to help people in need. Your thesis statement might read, “By virtue of a social contract, we do have a moral obligation to help one another.”

Analytical Essay

In analytical essays, writers must communicate their interpretation of a given source or set of sources. In these essays, a thesis statement will explain the conclusion that your analysis has led you to. It may also be helpful to forecast your analysis by explaining which specific points you’ll be examining. A helpful formula to get started with this kind of thesis statement is: “In this essay, I argue __________ by examining ____, ____, and ____.”

In an English class, you’ve been asked to write an essay that analyzes how a persuasive article about climate change was constructed. Your thesis statement might say, “In this paper, I argue that Johnson relies too heavily on personal anecdotes and interviews, rather than scientific data, to establish the threat of climate change.”

In a psychology class, your assignment is an essay that analyzes the connection between depression and childhood trauma based on several studies you’ve researched. Your thesis statement might read, “Based on the data from these three studies, it’s clear that there is a direct link between childhood trauma and clinical depression emerging in adults.”

Expository Essay

Expository essays ask writers to provide an informational breakdown of a topic, educating readers using specific details. It may be hard to understand how a thesis statement is of use in an expository essay because expository writing often does not advance an argument. Even so, a controlling statement near the beginning of the essay that summarizes your point is useful. By communicating clearly what the intention of your writing is, you can ensure that each new piece of information supports the central idea you are building.

A helpful formula for guiding your expository essay is: “In this essay, I will teach my reader __________.” As you work toward this goal, you can revisit this sentence later and rework it into an effective thesis statement.

In a biochemistry class, you’ve been asked to write an essay explaining the impact of bisphenol A on the human body. Your thesis statement might say, “This essay will make clear the correlation between bisphenol A exposure and hypertension.”

In a gender studies class, you must write an essay that explains third-wave feminism. Your thesis statement might read, “Third-wave feminism built upon the work of earlier generations of feminists to advocate for an expanded view of what being a woman means.”

Personal Essay

Especially in composition and creative writing classes, you might be asked to write essays that draw upon your personal experiences. Prompts for personal essays might include writing about your experiences with race or your development as a writer, and these essays are often centered on a moment of realization or revelation. You can distill these themes into a thesis statement for your personal essay. While there may be no central argument in a thesis like this, there is always an organizing principle, such as change, destiny, growth, or irony.

In a creative writing class, you have to write an essay about how the place you grew up shaped you. Your thesis statement might look like, “Growing up on the farm taught me how to be more patient.”

In a composition class, you have to write an essay about the first time you realized how your gender was part of your identity. Your essay’s thesis statement might read, “Because I was yelled at for playing with dolls as a kid, I understood that I didn’t fit the narrow constraints of masculinity as my family defined it.”

Writing a Paper: Thesis Statements

Basics of thesis statements.

The thesis statement is the brief articulation of your paper's central argument and purpose. You might hear it referred to as simply a "thesis." Every scholarly paper should have a thesis statement, and strong thesis statements are concise, specific, and arguable. Concise means the thesis is short: perhaps one or two sentences for a shorter paper. Specific means the thesis deals with a narrow and focused topic, appropriate to the paper's length. Arguable means that a scholar in your field could disagree (or perhaps already has!).

Strong thesis statements address specific intellectual questions, have clear positions, and use a structure that reflects the overall structure of the paper. Read on to learn more about constructing a strong thesis statement.

Being Specific

This thesis statement has no specific argument:

Needs Improvement: In this essay, I will examine two scholarly articles to find similarities and differences.

This statement is concise, but it is neither specific nor arguable—a reader might wonder, "Which scholarly articles? What is the topic of this paper? What field is the author writing in?" Additionally, the purpose of the paper—to "examine…to find similarities and differences" is not of a scholarly level. Identifying similarities and differences is a good first step, but strong academic argument goes further, analyzing what those similarities and differences might mean or imply.

Better: In this essay, I will argue that Bowler's (2003) autocratic management style, when coupled with Smith's (2007) theory of social cognition, can reduce the expenses associated with employee turnover.

The new revision here is still concise, as well as specific and arguable.  We can see that it is specific because the writer is mentioning (a) concrete ideas and (b) exact authors.  We can also gather the field (business) and the topic (management and employee turnover). The statement is arguable because the student goes beyond merely comparing; he or she draws conclusions from that comparison ("can reduce the expenses associated with employee turnover").

Making a Unique Argument

This thesis draft repeats the language of the writing prompt without making a unique argument:

Needs Improvement: The purpose of this essay is to monitor, assess, and evaluate an educational program for its strengths and weaknesses. Then, I will provide suggestions for improvement.

You can see here that the student has simply stated the paper's assignment, without articulating specifically how he or she will address it. The student can correct this error simply by phrasing the thesis statement as a specific answer to the assignment prompt.

Better: Through a series of student interviews, I found that Kennedy High School's antibullying program was ineffective. In order to address issues of conflict between students, I argue that Kennedy High School should embrace policies outlined by the California Department of Education (2010).

Words like "ineffective" and "argue" show here that the student has clearly thought through the assignment and analyzed the material; he or she is putting forth a specific and debatable position. The concrete information ("student interviews," "antibullying") further prepares the reader for the body of the paper and demonstrates how the student has addressed the assignment prompt without just restating that language.

Creating a Debate

This thesis statement includes only obvious fact or plot summary instead of argument:

Needs Improvement: Leadership is an important quality in nurse educators.

A good strategy to determine if your thesis statement is too broad (and therefore, not arguable) is to ask yourself, "Would a scholar in my field disagree with this point?" Here, we can see easily that no scholar is likely to argue that leadership is an unimportant quality in nurse educators.  The student needs to come up with a more arguable claim, and probably a narrower one; remember that a short paper needs a more focused topic than a dissertation.

Better: Roderick's (2009) theory of participatory leadership  is particularly appropriate to nurse educators working within the emergency medicine field, where students benefit most from collegial and kinesthetic learning.

Here, the student has identified a particular type of leadership ("participatory leadership"), narrowing the topic, and has made an arguable claim (this type of leadership is "appropriate" to a specific type of nurse educator). Conceivably, a scholar in the nursing field might disagree with this approach. The student's paper can now proceed, providing specific pieces of evidence to support the arguable central claim.

Choosing the Right Words

This thesis statement uses large or scholarly-sounding words that have no real substance:

Needs Improvement: Scholars should work to seize metacognitive outcomes by harnessing discipline-based networks to empower collaborative infrastructures.

There are many words in this sentence that may be buzzwords in the student's field or key terms taken from other texts, but together they do not communicate a clear, specific meaning. Sometimes students think scholarly writing means constructing complex sentences using special language, but actually it's usually a stronger choice to write clear, simple sentences. When in doubt, remember that your ideas should be complex, not your sentence structure.

Better: Ecologists should work to educate the U.S. public on conservation methods by making use of local and national green organizations to create a widespread communication plan.

Notice in the revision that the field is now clear (ecology), and the language has been made much more field-specific ("conservation methods," "green organizations"), so the reader is able to see concretely the ideas the student is communicating.

Leaving Room for Discussion

This thesis statement is not capable of development or advancement in the paper:

Needs Improvement: There are always alternatives to illegal drug use.

This sample thesis statement makes a claim, but it is not a claim that will sustain extended discussion. This claim is the type of claim that might be appropriate for the conclusion of a paper, but in the beginning of the paper, the student is left with nowhere to go. What further points can be made? If there are "always alternatives" to the problem the student is identifying, then why bother developing a paper around that claim? Ideally, a thesis statement should be complex enough to explore over the length of the entire paper.

Better: The most effective treatment plan for methamphetamine addiction may be a combination of pharmacological and cognitive therapy, as argued by Baker (2008), Smith (2009), and Xavier (2011).

In the revised thesis, you can see the student make a specific, debatable claim that has the potential to generate several pages' worth of discussion. When drafting a thesis statement, think about the questions your thesis statement will generate: What follow-up inquiries might a reader have? In the first example, there are almost no additional questions implied, but the revised example allows for a good deal more exploration.

Words to Avoid and to Embrace

When drafting your thesis statement, avoid words like explore, investigate, learn, compile, summarize , and explain to describe the main purpose of your paper. These words imply a paper that summarizes or "reports," rather than synthesizing and analyzing.

Instead of the terms above, try words like argue, critique, question , and interrogate . These more analytical words may help you begin strongly, by articulating a specific, critical, scholarly position.

The thesis statement or main claim must be debatable

An argumentative or persuasive piece of writing must begin with a debatable thesis or claim. In other words, the thesis must be something that people could reasonably have differing opinions on. If your thesis is something that is generally agreed upon or accepted as fact then there is no reason to try to persuade people.

Example of a non-debatable thesis statement:

This thesis statement is not debatable. First, the word pollution implies that something is bad or negative in some way. Furthermore, all studies agree that pollution is a problem; they simply disagree on the impact it will have or the scope of the problem. No one could reasonably argue that pollution is unambiguously good.

Example of a debatable thesis statement:

This is an example of a debatable thesis because reasonable people could disagree with it. Some people might think that this is how we should spend the nation's money. Others might feel that we should be spending more money on education. Still others could argue that corporations, not the government, should be paying to limit pollution.

Another example of a debatable thesis statement:

In this example there is also room for disagreement between rational individuals. Some citizens might think focusing on recycling programs rather than private automobiles is the most effective strategy.

The thesis needs to be narrow

Although the scope of your paper might seem overwhelming at the start, generally the narrower the thesis the more effective your argument will be. Your thesis or claim must be supported by evidence. The broader your claim is, the more evidence you will need to convince readers that your position is right.

Example of a thesis that is too broad:

There are several reasons this statement is too broad to argue. First, what is included in the category "drugs"? Is the author talking about illegal drug use, recreational drug use (which might include alcohol and cigarettes), or all uses of medication in general? Second, in what ways are drugs detrimental? Is drug use causing deaths (and is the author equating deaths from overdoses and deaths from drug related violence)? Is drug use changing the moral climate or causing the economy to decline? Finally, what does the author mean by "society"? Is the author referring only to America or to the global population? Does the author make any distinction between the effects on children and adults? There are just too many questions that the claim leaves open. The author could not cover all of the topics listed above, yet the generality of the claim leaves all of these possibilities open to debate.

Example of a narrow or focused thesis:

In this example the topic of drugs has been narrowed down to illegal drugs and the detriment has been narrowed down to gang violence. This is a much more manageable topic.

We could narrow each debatable thesis from the previous examples in the following way:

Narrowed debatable thesis 1:

This thesis narrows the scope of the argument by specifying not just the amount of money used but also how the money could actually help to control pollution.

Narrowed debatable thesis 2:

This thesis narrows the scope of the argument by specifying not just what the focus of a national anti-pollution campaign should be but also why this is the appropriate focus.

Qualifiers such as " typically ," " generally ," " usually ," or " on average " also help to limit the scope of your claim by allowing for the almost inevitable exception to the rule.

Types of claims

Claims typically fall into one of four categories. Thinking about how you want to approach your topic, or, in other words, what type of claim you want to make, is one way to focus your thesis on one particular aspect of your broader topic.

Claims of fact or definition: These claims argue about what the definition of something is or whether something is a settled fact. Example:

Claims of cause and effect: These claims argue that one person, thing, or event caused another thing or event to occur. Example:

Claims about value: These are claims made of what something is worth, whether we value it or not, how we would rate or categorize something. Example:

Claims about solutions or policies: These are claims that argue for or against a certain solution or policy approach to a problem. Example:

Which type of claim is right for your argument? Which type of thesis or claim you use for your argument will depend on your position and knowledge of the topic, your audience, and the context of your paper. You might want to think about where you imagine your audience to be on this topic and pinpoint where you think the biggest difference in viewpoints might be. Even if you start with one type of claim you probably will be using several within the paper. Regardless of the type of claim you choose to utilize it is key to identify the controversy or debate you are addressing and to define your position early on in the paper.

How to Write an MFA Thesis

If you aspire to write novels or work as a professional writer, you might consider pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing to help you get there. An MFA in Creative Writing can prepare you for a variety of writing careers, whether you want to teach, offer services as a freelancer or work as an editor for a publishing company.

While studying creative writing, you'll learn about storytelling, genre and more. One way master's degree programs prompt students to demonstrate what they've learned is through a thesis. 

Do You Write a Thesis for an MFA?

You typically have to complete a thesis as your capstone project in an MFA program.

Your thesis project can reveal to your instructor — and to you — what skills and knowledge you’ve acquired throughout your MFA studies.

Writing a thesis allows you to demonstrate that you can implement the various elements you’ve learned throughout the program, according to Paul Witcover , an associate dean of the online MFA program at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) with more than 30 years as a professional writer and editor. These elements include:

  • Point of view

Depending on your school or program, you might be asked to approach your thesis in a certain way. Some schools will have classes specifically dedicated to working on your thesis.

For instance, at SNHU, there are three classes in the MFA program centered around thesis work.

Jason Morgan , a creative writing instructor at SNHU and author of 12 books, said you write approximately half of your book in the initial thesis course, and the goal of the second course is to finish your first draft. Morgan said your instructor will give you detailed feedback you can implement in your final thesis course, which is focused on revision.

Instructors in SNHU’s MFA program look at five main components, Morgan said, including:

  • Writing elements – This includes clarity and comprehension.
  • Storytelling elements – These are the tools such as conflict and point of view that help your story to come alive.
  • Genre tropes – Every genre has different characteristics readers know and love, such as dystopian futures in speculative fiction and love triangles in romance.
  • Lack of cliche – Although you'll use genre tropes, it’s important that you’re also bringing something new to the story.
  • Articulation of response – This includes grammar, spelling and formatting.

It’s important to look at the syllabus and speak with your instructors if you’re not sure which components need to be evident in your thesis project.

What Does a Good MFA Thesis Look Like?

In the online MFA at SNHU, students are expected to produce a novel of at least 50,000 words, according to Witcover, who helped develop the program. Your chosen genre will also influence the word count. For example, a romance novel might end up at around 70,000 to 80,000 words, while a fantasy novel may be a bit longer, according to Witcover.

“You should have a novel that you can submit or self-publish with confidence, with a sense that you have created something that meets professional standards,” said Witcover.

This doesn’t mean your manuscript must be perfect, with no room for further editing.

When his first book was accepted for publication, Morgan said the publisher asked for additional revisions. Producing a novel that catches a publisher's attention is the first step, he said, and professional editors can help you polish your final product.

Is It Hard to Do an MFA Thesis?

In any academic program, you may have to navigate challenges. Time management is a particularly common one.

“Budgeting your time and preparing for the difficulties that you're likely to face is probably the single biggest challenge that I see in the thesis,” said Witcover, who has taught creative writing for 15 years.

Mark your important deadlines on your calendar, and try to work out a schedule for writing, if possible. Developing a consistent writing practice can help you to stay on track.

Students might also struggle with imposter syndrome. “A lot of people have a lot of self-doubt, and it's really common," Morgan said.

He said surrounding yourself with people who support you can go a long way.

“When you're in an MFA program, you're part of a community,” said Witcover. If you’re struggling, you can always reach out to your advisor, instructor or peers for support.

How Can I Overcome Writer’s Block?

It can be frustrating to feel like you can’t write when you have deadlines approaching, but there are a few ways to deal with writer's block. It's important to find which method works best for you.

If you’re struggling with writer’s block, you might consider switching to a different task for a while. Sometimes, taking a break can help you return to your project with fresh eyes, according to Morgan.

For example, you might try grabbing a snack or going for a walk. Even writing in a different location, such as another room or a coffee shop, could help to change your perspective.

If that’s not possible, Witcover suggests sitting down and trying to write something. It’s not always easy, but putting words on the page is the first step to getting to where you want to be.

The deadlines in the capstone courses prepare students for real-life deadlines as a professional writer, according to Witcover, who has published a number of novels, short stories and critical essays.

“If you have a deadline and you don't make it, you don't get paid,” he said. “So we're kind of teaching our students and preparing our students for successful careers as professional writers.”

Find Your Program

What does revision look like.

When it comes to revision, everyone has a different process.

Some writers prefer to finish their first draft before revising, said Witcover, while others edit as they go.

Morgan said he strongly encourages his thesis students to get their first draft down, because knowing the whole story can help with revision. Even if you have an idea of what you want your story to be about, your characters and plots might change and expand as you write your first draft.

“Revision is such an important part of the writing process,” said Morgan.

He said revision allows you to take a step back and look at your story and characters, while also considering the feedback you received from your instructor and peers. Revision is a great opportunity to clean up your first draft.

Becoming the Writer You’re Meant to Be

Although writing for a class can be intimidating, your instructors are there to help you, not tell you what or how they think you should write.

“We're not in the business of trying to turn writers into who we think they should be,” said Witcover. “We're trying to help writers become who they already are, whether they know it or not.”

He said it’s okay to want to become the next George R.R. Martin, but what if the world doesn’t need another George R.R. Martin? Maybe it needs you instead.

Realizing that can be a huge moment in a writer’s career, according to Witcover.

Morgan said his main goal isn’t to teach his students how to be creative, but rather how to improve their writing.

“The overall goal is not for me to tell a creative person how to be them, how to write,” he said. “It's to help them be a better them.”

College applications demand time and effort. To some, they feel tedious at best and miserable at worst. You work to recount everything about your life to multiple strangers who decide your admission fate. It’s tough and many agree that the written portion poses the greatest challenge.

Every application season, I hear the same question, “How do I write a strong Personal Insight Question, or PIQ, response?”

A common misconception suggests that strong applicants need to stand out on the writing portion. This goal shouldn’t guide your focus — it’s too difficult and unnecessary. Instead, focus on authenticity.

Let’s break this process into four steps to help you craft genuine and impactful responses.

Step one: What makes you, you?

Brainstorm aspects of yourself that define who you are before you even look at the provided questions. Perhaps it’s a mix of activities, a personal achievement or an obstacle you overcame. Ignore the questions at this stage and reflect on your story. Anything works and if you feel stuck think about what occupies your time and thoughts.

Step two: Match your answers to the questions

Review your answers from step one and match them to the PIQs they most align with. We provide eight questions but only require four responses (if you’re a transfer, you’ll get one mandatory question). This gives you the chance to tailor what you share. Many topics fit multiple questions so choose the ones that work best for you. These questions guide you — they do not test you. This is not an essay.

Step three: Write your first draft

Forget the rules from English class about thesis statements, catchy hooks and detailed examples as you write. Let your experiences and emotions carry the main idea. Write how you talk. This is your chance to tell us your story in your voice. I empower you to write about anything you feel is important to understand who you are. It may feel personal, even difficult, but the readers’ role is to learn, not judge.

Step four: Review your work 

Once you finish your draft, begin to polish it. At a minimum read your response aloud to yourself to check for flow and clarity. Use this step to ensure your responses are casual, personal and reflective. For example, explain why soccer matters to you. Describe what being an Eagle Scout means to you. Share why you started a Women in STEM club and how it shaped you or your community. These types of reflections create a rich response that strengthens your overall application.

Write with purpose

PIQ responses may challenge you, but remember they offer an opportunity to show who you are beyond grades and scores. I hope these steps make the PIQ process a little less daunting and help you to stay authentic to who you are. Good luck and happy writing!

What is a diversity statement  .

Diversity Statements have become more and more common over recent years, and are often a required part of applications for both universities and employment. Much like the other elements of personal narrative statements that make up an application (Personal Statements, Resumés/CVs, Cover Letters, etc.), Diversity Statements are intended to illustrate past experiences and values that emphasize what diversity means for your audience: the application or hiring committee that will read your documents.

What do these applications mean by “diversity”?

In general, university departments and sites of employment are interested in “diversity” in a number of ways, including, importantly, building a diverse student body/workforce. This notion of diversity can also be apparent in the focus of your work or in your approach, particularly if you are applying for a research degree (e.g., how will your research include diverse or underserved populations?). You can also use “diversity” as a personal and professional value (e.g., why is a diverse workplace/professional focus important to you?).

When applications mention the word “diversity,” they refer to a number of identity categories that may include the following:

  • Disability Status
  • Citizenship Status
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Religious Affiliation
  • Socio-Economic Status

While this is not a complete list, it is intended to give you common categories of how you, as the writer of a Diversity Statement, might choose to approach the broader term “diversity.”

Approaching your Diversity Statement

When you start composing your statement, you probably want to start by defining “diversity” for yourself. Here are some guiding questions that might help:

  • What does “diversity” mean to you?
  • What does diversity mean within your field?
  • How do you see increased diversity positively impacting your field in the future?
  • How does diversity positively impact how you approach your work?
  • How has diversity assisted with your personal or professional growth?
  • How does your research contribute to positive values around diversity in your field?

These questions are not exhaustive, and, where possible, you should respond to the organization’s specific prompt or statement on diversity (if one is accessible).

Composing your Diversity Statement

Once you decide how you want to approach your Diversity Statement, the composition of the statement itself should mirror effective personal statements more generally.

As a rule, your Diversity Statement should make it clear both your own strengths in this area (what diversity means to you, personally and professionally), and, ideally, how your conception of diversity fits in with the institution or organization you’re applying to. Put another way, you want to tell your audience about your own strengths while connecting these strengths explicitly to their workplace/university, since all application documents are arguing that you’re a good fit for a given professional environment.

You also want your Diversity statement to be specific and thus memorable : While broad articulations of values can be helpful in making abstract points, make sure you back up these points with characteristic examples that illustrate what you’re talking about. These specific examples act as evidence for your audience: while the audience does not know you personally, specific examples can help them to get a sense of how you put your values into practice in real life.

Even though the genre of diversity statements is relatively recent, compared to research statement and teaching philosophy, its organization often reproduces the following structure:

  • Your understanding of diversity

This first section addresses your current view of diversity, which should generally align with the view of the institution you are applying to.

  • Your experience relative to diversity

This second section points out past experiences that illustrate the values and your understanding of diversity.

  • Your potential contributions to diversity

This third section refers to future initiatives that you might implement or be involved with in the institution you are applying to.

What to share and what not to share

Diversity statements can be tricky in that they can leave writers feeling like they need to use aspects of their identity set apart from their whole selves in application documents — and this discomfort can be worsened if writers feel that the topic asks them to relate harmful or traumatic experiences as part of an application.

What you choose to disclose and discuss is completely up to you, and you should not feel obligated to disclose or rely on things that you would prefer not to discuss in applications. When the process feels uncomfortable, it might be helpful to focus outside the self, instead exploring how your professional approach or focus is informed by values of diversity.

Thông thường, câu luận điểm thường nằm ở đoạn mở đầu để giới thiệu chủ đề chính. Đây cũng là câu đóng vai trò làm trọng tâm cho việc phát triển ý tưởng và lập luận của bạn sau đó.

Nhìn chung, một Thesis statement hiệu quả cần đảm bảo 3 tiêu chí sau:

  • Súc tích (Concise): Một câu luận điểm hay cần ngắn gọn và đi thẳng vào vấn đề. Bạn không cần dài dòng quá mức cần thiết. Khi viết essay, bạn cần thể hiện quan điểm của mình rõ ràng và trực tiếp trong 1 – 2 câu.
  • Có nội dung tranh luận (Contentious): Luận điểm của bạn không nên là tuyên bố đơn giản về sự thật hiển nhiên mà ai cũng đều biết. Một Thesis statement tốt cần phải có bằng chứng hoặc lập luận phân tích.
  • Mạch lạc (Coherent): Nội dung được đề cập trong tuyên bố luận điểm cần được trình bày và giải thích trong phần còn lại của bài viết.

  • Sự khác biệt giữa Thesis statement và Topic sentence

Nhiều bạn thường hay nhầm lẫn giữa hai khái niệm “Thesis statement” và “Topic sentence“. Về cơ bản, hai thuật ngữ này khá tương đồng, song lại không hề giống nhau. Điều đó dẫn đến một số trở ngại cho người học tiếng Anh nói riêng và thí sinh IELTS nói chung khi muốn hình thành một Thesis Statement cho bài luận của mình.

3 bước hình thành Thesis Statement trong IELTS Writing Task 2 dưới đây sẽ phần nào giúp thí sinh cải thiện được khả năng viết Thesis Statement cũng như hoàn thiện cấu trúc một bài văn nghị luận hoàn chỉnh:

Bước 1: Phân tích đề bài

Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, trước khi hình thành Thesis Statement cho bài viết của mình, thí sinh cần xác định những vấn đề sau trong đề bài.

  • Phạm vi đề bài (Scope): Phạm vi câu hỏi là những chủ đề, vấn đề được bàn luận trong đề bài. Thí sinh không thể đưa ra bất kỳ những thông tin, chi tiết, hay luận điểm nào ngoài phạm vi đề bài đã được xác định này. Việc xác định phạm vi đề bài không chỉ giúp thí sinh hình thành Thesis Statement mà còn giúp bài văn của thí sinh tránh bị lạc đề.
  • Từ khóa (Keyword): Thuật ngữ từ khoá ở đây chỉ những từ/cụm từ trong đề bài giúp thí sinh nhận biết được đâu là mối quan hệ của những vấn đề được đề cập.
  • Từ chỉ dẫn (Instruction words): Xác định từ chỉ dẫn là bước quan trọng nhất trong việc hình thành Thesis Statement. Nói một cách đơn giản, từ chỉ dẫn là yêu cầu của đề bài dành cho thí sinh. Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, có 5 loại yêu cầu tương ứng với 5 loại bài văn nghị luận khác nhau như được thể hiện trong bảng dưới đây:

Yêu cầu đề bài: Còn được biết với tên gọi bài luận “Agree or Disagree” (đồng ý hay không đồng ý), hoặc “Argumentative” (tranh luận). Thí sinh được yêu cầu đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân về một phát ngôn, ý kiến bất kỳ thuộc một phạm trù xã hội nhất định.

  • To what extent do you agree? (Bạn đồng ý ở mức độ nào?)
  • Discussion Essay (Bài luận thảo luận)
  • Yêu cầu đề bài: Trong một bài luận thảo luận, thí sinh phải thảo luận về hai mặt của một vấn đề và đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân của bản thân về vấn đề đó.

Ví dụ về câu hỏi chứa “từ chỉ dẫn”: Discuss both views and give your opinion. (Bàn luận về cả hai góc nhìn và đưa ra ý kiến của bạn.)

  • Problem Essay (Bài luận giải quyết vấn đề)
  • Yêu cầu đề bài: Có tên gọi khác là bài luận “Cause and Solutions” (Nguyên nhân và cách giải quyết) hay “Problems and Solutions” Vấn đề và Cách giải quyết). Loại bài luận này yêu cầu thí sinh thảo luận về nguyên nhân và hướng giải quyết của một vấn đề xã hội.

  • What are the causes of this? How can this problem be solved? (Nguyên nhân của vấn đề này là gì? Làm thế nào để giải quyết vấn đề này?)

Advantages and Disadvantages Essays (Bài luận ưu điểm và nhược điểm) 

Yêu cầu đề bài: Thí sinh được yêu cầu bàn luận về ưu điểm và khuyết điểm của một vấn đề.

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of….? (Ưu điểm và nhược điểm của … là gì?)
  • Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? (Bạn có nghĩ rằng trong trường hợp này điểm mạnh chiếm nhiều hơn điểm yếu?)
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your opinion. (Thảo luận về những thuận lợi và khó khăn sau đó đưa ra ý kiến của bạn.)

Double Questions Essays (Bài luận hai câu hỏi)

Yêu cầu đề bài: Có tên gọi khác là bài luận “Direct Questions” (câu hỏi trực tiếp) và “Two Questions” (hai câu hỏi). Thí sinh được yêu cầu phải trả lời và đưa ra mối tương quan giữa hai câu hỏi đề bài đưa ra.

  • Do you think wealth is the best measure of success? What makes a successful person? (Bạn có nghĩ rằng tiền tài là thước đo tốt nhất của thành công?
  • Why do some people work harder? Is it always a good thing to work hard? (Tại sao một số người làm việc chăm chỉ hơn những người còn lại? Có phải làm việc chăm chỉ luôn luôn là một việc tốt?)

Bước 2: Phác thảo dàn ý của bài viết

Dựa vào những thông tin thí sinh phân tích ở bước 1 từ đề bài. Thí sinh phải xác định được quan điểm, khía cạnh mà mình sẽ phân tích trong bài luận. Nếu thí sinh rơi vào tình trạng bí ý tưởng, không biết mình nên viết gì cho bài luận, thí sinh có thể tự đặt ra cho mình những câu hỏi như sau:

  • What is the meaning of this statement? (Ý nghĩa của phát biểu này là gì?)
  • Is this likely true to me? (Phát biểu này có đúng với tôi hay không?)
  • Why is this true/not true to me? (Tại sao đúng/tại sao lại không đúng với tôi?)
  • Is it easier to agree with this statement or disagree? (Đồng ý với phát biểu này dễ hơn hay không đồng ý?)

Bước 3: Trả lời trực tiếp câu hỏi chứa từ chỉ dẫn dựa trên bước 1 và bước 2

Sau khi đã hoàn thành xong bước 1 và bước 2, thí sinh sẽ trả lời câu hỏi có từ chỉ dẫn dựa trên những thông tin được đúc kết từ bước 1 và bước 2. Câu trả lời này chính là Thesis Statement của thí sinh.

Lưu ý: Ngoài việc trả lời trực tiếp quan điểm của mình, người viết phải nêu ra được luận điểm mình muốn bàn tới trong Thesis Statement, nêu rõ những khía cạnh của vấn đề sẽ tiếp tục được phân tích một cách vừa cụ thể, vừa súc tích và dễ theo dõi.

Phân tích đề bài:

Technology is becoming increasingly prevalent in the world today. Given time, technology will completely replace the teacher in the classroom. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? (Công nghệ ngày càng trở nên thịnh hành trên thế giới ngày nay. Trong tương lai, công nghệ sẽ thay thế hoàn toàn giáo viên trong lớp học. Bạn có đồng ý hay không đồng ý với ý kiến này?)

Nhận xét đề bài trên, thí sinh rút ra được:

  • Phạm vi đề bài: đề bài bàn luận về hai vấn đề chính là “technology” (công nghệ) và cụm từ “the teacher in the classroom” (giáo viên trong lớp học) ám chỉ chủ đề “education” (giáo dục). Như vậy thí sinh không được viết về bất kì lĩnh vực nào khác ngoài hai lĩnh vực đã được khoanh vùng ở trên.
  • Từ khoá: hai cụm từ “increasingly prevalent” (ngày càng phổ biến) “completely replace” (hoàn toàn thay thế) chỉ ra mối liên hệ giữa hai phạm vi được nói đến trong đề bài.
  • Từ chỉ dẫn: nhờ vào từ chỉ dẫn “agree” (đồng ý) hay “disagree” (không đồng ý), thí sinh xác định được rằng đây là loại Opinion Essay. Thí sinh phải đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân (đồng ý) hay không đồng ý.

Bước 2: Phác thảo dàn ý bài viết

Thí sinh đặt câu hỏi dựa trên ý kiến bài viết đưa tra và lập dàn ý phác thảo như sau:

Vấn đề của đề bài này là: “Technology will completely replace the teacher in the classroom.”

  • What is the meaning of this statement? ➱ It means students will learn entirely from computers. (Nó có nghĩa là học sinh sẽ học hoàn toàn trên máy tính.)
  • Is this likely true to me? ➱ Definitely no. (Chắc chắn là không.)
  • Why is this not true to me? ➱ Since a robotic instructor will not be able to discipline misbehaving students as well asl understand the personal needs of each student. (Vì một giáo viên robot sẽ không thể kỷ luật những học sinh có hành vi sai trái cũng như thấu hiểu được nhu cầu của từng học sinh.)
  • Is it easier to agree with this statement or disagree? ➱ (Không đồng ý)

Câu hỏi chỉ dẫn: “Do you agree or disagree with this statement?” có thể được trả lời như sau: I disagree that technology will completely replace the teacher in the classroom. (Không đồng ý rằng công nghệ sẽ thay thế hoàn toàn giáo viên trong lớp học.) Kết hợp với phần phân tích ở bước 2, thí sinh A có Thesis Statement hoàn chỉnh là:

I personally disagree that teachers would be replaced completely by modern technology. This is because a robotic instructor would fail to discipline misbehaving students and lack of understanding of their personal needs. (Tôi không đồng ý rằng giáo viên trong lớp học sẽ bị thay thế bởi công nghệ hiện đại. Phần Thesis statement trên gồm 2 câu : 1 câu đưa ra trực tiếp quan điểm/góc nhìn của mình và 1 câu trình bày ngắn gọn các luận điểm sẽ được nhắc đến trong thân bài.

Kết hợp với phần phân tích ở bước 2, thí sinh có Thesis Statement hoàn chỉnh là: I believe that it is preferable to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than at middle school, mainly because the younger they are, the faster they learn and it will also enhance their flexibility with language. Bước 1: Phân tích đề bài 

Nhận xét đề bài trên, các khía cạnh được kết luận như sau: 

  • Phạm vi đề bài: Dựa vào cụm từ “focus on processes to be successful in life”, thí sinh nhận định được rằng bài viết này sẽ xoay quanh chủ đề “Work and life” (công việc và cuộc sống) mà cụ thể là “successful in life” (thành công trong cuộc sống). 
  • Từ khoá: “believe that results are more important” cho thấy vấn đề được đặt ra ở đây là tranh luận về “processes” (quá trình) và “results” (kết quả) thì khía cạnh nào quan trọng hơn khi đánh giá thành công của một con người. 
  • Từ chỉ dẫn: “discuss” (thảo luận) cả hai ý kiến và “give opinion” (đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân) về tranh cãi trên. Từ những chỉ dẫn này, thí sinh rút ra được bài luận này thuộc dạng Opinion Essay. 

Bước 2: Phác thảo dàn ý của bài viết 

  • What is the meaning of these statements? ➱ There are two contrasting arguments, one believes that success should be judged by the process and the other thinks that the results are more important. (Có hai lập luận tương phản nhau, một bên tin rằng thành công nên được đánh giá bằng quá trình và bên kia cho rằng kết quả quan trọng hơn.) 
  • Which argument is more likely true to you? ➱ The first one. (Quan điểm đầu tiên). 
  • Why? ➱ I believe that successful ones concentrate on what they can potentially achieve on their way to success. (Tôi tin rằng những người thành công tập trung vào những gì họ có thể đạt được trên con đường đi đến thành công.)

Với câu hỏi chỉ dẫn: “Discuss both views and give your opinion.”, thí sinh có thể trả lời kết hợp với phần phân tích từ bước 1 và bước 2 như sau: In my opinion, I believe that successful ones concentrate on what they can potentially achieve on their way to success like self-acknowledgment, not the final results, and the two contrasting perspectives will be discussed in the essay below.   • 5 lưu ý về cách viết Thesis statement trong Writing IELTS Task 2

Sau đây là 5 lưu ý chính về cách viết câu luận điểm để có hiệu quả cao nhất:

1. Mạch lạc và súc tích

Thesis statement cần phải được viết rõ ràng và ngắn gọn. Từ đó để người đọc có thể nhanh chóng nắm được quan điểm và lập luận của bạn. Bạn nên tránh sử dụng ngôn ngữ mơ hồ, biệt ngữ hoặc các cấu trúc phức tạp, dễ gây nhầm lẫn.

Ví dụ, bạn nên tránh sử dụng các thuật ngữ mơ hồ và chung chung như “some,” “many,” hay “a lot”. Thay vào đó, bạn hãy sử dụng cách diễn đạt cụ thể để minh họa sâu sắc cho lập luận của mình.

Ví dụ: Some people believe that social media has a negative impact on mental health. -> The excessive use of social media can lead to depression and anxiety among adolescents.

2. Nêu ra quan điểm chính

Thesis statement cần thể hiện quan điểm xuyên suốt và đóng vai trò là “lộ trình” cho xuyên suốt toàn bộ bài. Thesis Statement: Schools should teach financial management to students as it will help them make informed financial decisions, cultivate responsible spending habits, and reduce the risk of debt in adulthood.

Topic: Should college education be free for everyone? Weak: In my opinion, I think that college education should be free for everyone. Strong: College education should be free for everyone as it is a basic human right and promotes equal opportunities for all individuals to access higher education.

Trong ví dụ ban đầu, việc bạn sử dụng cụm từ “I think” và “In my opnion” khiến luận điểm của bạn trở nên kém thu hút và mang tính chủ quan. Ngược lại, ví dụ thứ hai sử dụng các động từ tích cực và rõ ràng để truyền đạt quan điểm thu hút hơn. Bên cạnh đó, người viết cũng bao gồm lập luận hỗ trợ, rằng giáo dục đại học là quyền cơ bản của con người, góp phần thúc đẩy các cơ hội bình đẳng.

4. Tránh sử dụng đại từ nhân xưng

Trong bài viết IELTS Academic, bạn nên tránh sử dụng các đại từ nhân xưng như “I” hoặc “my”. Thay vào đó, bạn hãy sử dụng ngôn ngữ trung lập để trình bày lập luận. Điều này sẽ đảm bảo tính khách quan và xác thực cho luận điểm thể hiện trong bài.

Trong ví dụ này, câu luận điểm không đề cập đến câu hỏi. Người viết nêu được chủ đề mạng xã hội (social media). Nhưng họ không đề cập đến những lợi thế và bất lợi của việc sử dụng mạng xã hội. Cũng như họ không đưa ra quan điểm rõ ràng về chủ đề này.
