It handles tax calculations, including tax payments and filings in all 50 states and across all levels (federal, state, and local). HomeWork Solutions Pricing

Since Our Last Update: HomeWork Solutions has increased the additional per-employee fee of its Complete Payroll plan—from $60 to $65 per worker quarterly.

HomeWork Solutions offers two plans: Complete Payroll and Essential Payroll. With Complete Payroll, you can choose to run payroll weekly or biweekly, and HWS will handle the entire process—from calculating earnings/deductions to filing tax forms and paying your employees. On the other hand, Essential Payroll includes only nanny payroll tax payment and filing services, and you have to issue employee payments yourself. Both plans require you to pay a $110 one-time setup fee and a $110 year-end tax report fee per employee.

Note that HomeWork Solutions’ pricing for its Complete Payroll plan is based on a single-employee household. You have to pay an extra $65 per additional employee for every quarter. For example, if you have four employees, you will pay an additional $195 per quarter (the first employee is included in the base pricing).

If you already paid household employees before signing up for an HWS plan and were unable to remit tax payments, the provider can help with back taxes. For $225 per quarter, it can calculate the previous quarter’s taxes so that you know how much you need to pay.

The provider nearly earned a perfect score in this criterion given its solid nanny payroll tools with automatic pay runs and multiple payment options. It lost points because it charges extra for year-end tax report preparation. Here are some of its payroll features.

Weekly & Biweekly Payroll

Under the Complete Payroll plan, HomeWork Solutions offers weekly and biweekly pay runs. Payments are made through direct deposits, although it can also handle check payments. This plan also includes payroll recordkeeping, online pay stubs for your household employees, and access to a dedicated payroll representative who can answer questions and provide information about past and current employee payments. You even get an “Employer e-Filing Cabinet,” which provides you 24/7 online access to all of your nanny payroll and tax information.

Customers who choose the Essential Payroll plan must pay workers directly and send employee payroll records to HomeWork Solutions quarterly.

Quarterly Tax Calculations

HomeWork Solutions handles all quarterly tax calculations, including remittance of taxes. It also completes all the required tax forms and automatically files these to the appropriate agencies. While it can manage federal, state, and local taxes for all 50 states, some states may require service levels included in the Complete Payroll plan. Contact HomeWork Solutions to inquire about the nanny tax requirements in your state and which plan is best for you.

If you owe back taxes for employees who have already been paid but failed to meet tax requirements, HomeWork Solutions will charge a $225 “previous quarter” fee to process back taxes.

Year-end Tax Forms

Regardless of whether you choose the Essential Payroll or Complete Payroll plan, HomeWork Solutions will prepare payroll tax returns and generate Schedule H and W-2 forms. Relevant tax forms are then visible from the “Employer e-Filing Cabinet” and its simple self-service online portal for employees.

HomeWork Solutions HR Features

In our evaluation of HomeWork Solutions’ HR functionalities, this provider scored 3.25 out of 5. It would have received a higher score if it provides access to benefit plan options. As of this writing, it only offers workers’ compensation insurance through its insurance partner. Here are some of its key HR features.

Employee Online Portal

HomeWork Solutions’ employee self-service portal lets your household staff view their pay stubs and tax forms online. Your employees will also get text and email notifications for net pay deposit transactions.

Insurance Partner for Workers’ Compensation

While HomeWork Solutions doesn’t offer workers’ compensation plans, it has an insurance partner that can assist you with your household employee insurance needs.

Background Checks

In addition to payroll and tax services, HomeWork Solutions offers background checks through NannyVerify.com. HomeWork Solutions received a 3.88 out of 5 score in this criterion because of its solid nanny payroll and compliance support, including its tax services and ID setup assistance for new household employers. However, its limited how-to guides and dedicated payroll support that’s available only in its Complete Payroll package cost this provider some points.

Registering for a HomeWork Solutions account is easy. Simply choose a plan from the HomeWork Solutions website to start the process. It has an online wizard to guide new clients through registration—although there’s also an option for downloading a paper registration form. Keep in mind, however, that account setup takes anywhere from five to seven days to complete from the time HomeWork Solutions receives all of the necessary employer information.

As soon as initial enrollment is complete, HomeWork Solutions handles employer account setup with the IRS and relevant state tax authorities. It will even help you manage all correspondence to and from tax agencies.

You also get a dedicated payroll specialist if you subscribe to its Complete Payroll package.

Even if you don’t, HomeWork Solutions offers free HR consultations if you have nanny payroll questions and queries about your household employer obligations. It even provides unlimited support, and you can contact customer service (as well as a nanny payroll tax and labor law expert) Mondays through Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern time.

However, its online “Knowledge Center” has limited how-to guides. While most of the help articles tackle nanny payroll and tax basics, there aren’t a lot of online guides about the provider’s payroll services and tools.

HomeWork Solutions Expert Score

In our expert assessment, HomeWork Solutions earned a perfect score for its robust tax support for household employers. It provides access to a household tax and labor law expert should you need help navigating the complexities of nanny payroll. Signing up for its services is also easy. Plus, its payroll plans are reasonably priced.

However, if you need a more budget-friendly option, consider SurePayroll by Paychex . Unlike HomeWork Solutions, it doesn’t charge on a per-pay run basis. Its nanny payroll service only costs $49.99 per month for one employee and comes with unlimited pay runs and tax filing services. You also don’t have to pay extra for year-end tax form preparation as you would with HomeWork Solutions.

There are very few up-to-date HomeWork Solutions reviews online as of this writing. I have rated HWS a 3 as the service is…

I have rated HWS a 3 as the service is mixed. I have one person who I work with who will often say they tried calling me back. However, I've received no missed calls or voicemail. The same is true with not replying to emails. We also had to fight with the state and the federal because the payments that were supposed to be applied on our behalf, weren't done correctly. Three quarters. We also got fined. While we did get help resolving the issue, I had to spend hours trying to figure it out and the returns from our return that was held and applied came back in dribs and drabs and I'm not sure if it ever was all returned. Finally, now the state department of revenue has set up a savings program for employees that is supposed to be withheld and deposited so the state can invest it in the retirement tool of the employee's choice. The state has connected directly with HWS. At this point, I have not seen the money withheld from the employee paychecks. The good thing is that checks are mailed or deposited on time. I feel like the help I do get is cordial and apologetic when there has been a problem. I like that this is a small business that works with small businesses.

We have used HWS for 6 years for our nanny and they have done an amazing job. I just regret not hiring them for the first two years we employed our nanny! I don't like the interface

Great Experience! Homework Solutions has handled my tax needs for our nanny since 2016. They have done a great job and have always been very responsive to any questions I may have. I would highly recommend Homework Solutions!

Not a great service.

Not a great service. 1. Sometimes they pay the government late. 2. They are not that helpful at tax time (just provide forms, no instructions or TurboTax integration or anything) 3. They raise their prices and don't make it easy to see how much money you are paying them and how much money goes to the government. 4. If you ask to leave, they remind you that they might close down your business since they have all your numbers. So, you are kind of stuck with them until you no longer have an employee and don't care what they do to your setup.

When a client tells us they would like to close an account, we ask if you would like us to do the work of closing your tax accounts. I have been very pleased with the knowledge, professionalism, and courtesy of all of the Homework Solutions employees with whom I have interacted. The payroll services provided to one employee-employers, and other small employers, is invaluable. HomeWork Solutions offers full payroll and payroll tax filing services and guarantees the accuracy of its work. 

Household payroll has many nuanced laws, regulations and exemptions that differ from regular business payroll. HomeWork is nationally recognized as an expert in household employment taxes and regularly consulted by top media outlets like The New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

HomeWork Solutions offers two different service plans. We explored all of the options, as detailed below. 

Services overview

*NOTE: This plan also requires a $110 one-time setup fee and a $110 year-end fee. Prices are also for a single employee. With Complete Payroll there is an additional fee per employee of $65 each quarter if you pay more than one nanny or household worker. For example, if you pay three employees, this will cost an additional $130 that quarter (the first employee is included in the base price). 

Essential Payroll

The $165 per quarter Essential Payroll plan includes payroll withholding calculations, payroll tax payment and return preparation, and generation of payroll tax forms. It also includes unlimited customer support.

The Essential Payroll plan includes concierge-quality customer service. Their proactive support team will reach out to inform you of any major payroll changes and updates, such as increases or decreases in state payroll tax rates. 

HomeWork Solutions will prepare payroll tax returns and generate tax forms, like Form 1040 Schedule H and W-2s. HomeWork Solutions will also make tax payments and file reports on a customer’s behalf. 

However, in the Essential plan, the employer is responsible for paying their employees. If you would like to have HomeWork Solutions handle your employee payments, you’ll have to upgrade to the Complete plan. 

Keep in mind that the $165 quarterly fee does not include the $110 set up fee or $110 year-end fee. You will also pay an additional fee if you choose to have your payroll taxes deducted from a credit card instead of a bank account.     

Complete Payroll

The Complete Payroll plan is $220 per quarter for those on a biweekly payroll schedule and $245 per quarter for those who run payroll weekly. The plan includes everything from the Essential Payroll plan, plus employee payment, record keeping, and a dedicated payroll specialist.

The Complete Payroll plan from HomeWork Solutions includes all of the features and benefits from the Essential Payroll plan, plus employee payment services. There are also two different pricing structures, depending on how often you pay your staff (biweekly or weekly). 

If you choose the Complete plan, HomeWork Solutions will maintain your payroll records. You’re also able to pay your employees through direct deposit and you’ll receive text alerts and access to pay stubs. The Complete Payroll plan also comes with a dedicated payroll representative to assist you with any issues.   

As with the Essential Payroll plan, Complete plan pricing does not include the set-up fee or year-end fee. However, unlike the Essential plan, there are no pricing differences for tax collection preferences.

Payroll Service

HomeWork Solutions takes care of all quarterly and annual employment tax forms, filings and remittances. They also guarantee the accuracy of their work. Through the HomeWork Solutions online tools, customers can calculate and store periodic payroll information, including tax deductions. 

Each quarter, HomeWork solutions receives your files and makes all of the necessary tax calculations for you. They will alert you of any tax updates and changes and coordinate tax-related correspondence with the government.

Customers also have the option to pay their employees via the Essentials plan, or have HomeWork Solutions handle employee payment through the pricier Complete plan.

Hiring and Onboarding Tools

HomeWork Solutions partners with NannyVerify.com for customers who wish to perform nanny or caregiver background checks. There are several different types of background checks available as well as add-on services. 

A basic background check, including a single-county criminal record check, starts at $34.95. 

The Homework website is user-friendly. The plans are easy to find, with good detail on features and pricing. You can even get more information on each individual service. It’s laid out well and easy to understand.

The site also has a robust help center where you can get information on a variety of topics.

How’s the signup process navigation?

To sign up for one of the HomeWork Solutions plans, click on the Begin Enrollment button underneath the plan of your choice.

You will then be taken to the User Registration page where you are prompted to fill in your contact information. Click on the Next button when you’re finished.

Next, you’ll be sent a verification code to the email address you’re using to sign up. Retrieve the code, enter it, and click the Verify button. 

Once verification is complete, you can log into your HomeWork Solutions account.

Once inside the online portal, you’ll move through several prompts to complete the registration process and enter payment information. 

How’s the mobile experience?

Unlike some other payroll service providers, HomeWork Solutions does not have a mobile app. But customers can manage their account through the web portal.

Quick and Easy Cancellation?

HomeWork Solutions customers can cancel their service plan by contacting customer service. Here is what is listed on their website:

Should you need to cancel for any reason, the unused portion of your prepaid annual service fee will be cheerfully refunded. The HomeWork solutions website is quite user-friendly, and information is easy to find. If you have all your information handy, you can complete the signup process in less than 30 minutes. 

The site is not very “salesy” and simply seems to guide you toward the right plan for your own personal payroll needs. It also offers an excellent customer experience.

We tested all three forms of HomeWork Solutions customer support, as detailed below.  

Chat support

The HomeWork Solutions chat support feature is essentially just a contact form. There is no live chat support, but you can call customer support within the timeframe below:

Phone support

We called HomeWork Solutions’ customer support and reached a live representative in less than one minute. We asked them about their tax support guarantee and how it worked. The representative was very cordial and polite, and gave us some details. 

Essentially, although HomeWork Solutions guarantees accuracy, it is ultimately up to the customer to provide them with accurate data in the first place. If the data provided is incorrect, the company cannot be held responsible for any payroll errors that result.

Email support

In the Contact Us section of the website, we completed the form and asked how long it would take to get our account set up after purchasing services and paying the set up fee. A friendly representative got back to us the next day and told us that the turnaround time for account set up depends on the customer, but typically takes 5-7 business days.

The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.  

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school. 

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects. 

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers. 

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

• Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want 
• Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help 

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help. 

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter! 

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!  

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming 

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. 

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . But you’re responsible for paying the nanny, filing quarterly tax forms, and remitting payments to government agencies. Full service packages range from $49 to $79 monthly for one nanny. However, Savvy Nanny offers an affordable package for two household employees, costing $50 monthly. Parents and guardians must review pricing and fees carefully, as several nanny payroll services charge one-time setup fees ranging from $75 to $110. Nanny Annual Performance Reviews

Nannies, like any other employee, are entitled to regular, scheduled salary reviews and performance appraisals. Many families link the two, others strictly review salary on an annual basis and performance appraisals may be delivered more frequently. Regular review of performance and compensation sends the nanny the message that you view her as a professional, a valuable member of your family ‘team.’

Nanny Annual Wage Reviews

Typically an annual wage review (or raise) takes two important items into consideration: merit and cost of living.

A merit review recognizes demonstrated job performance within the year being reviewed. The merit increase will be performance based and typically will run from 0 – 3% of wages with zero being the nanny that does the bare minimum and 3% being the nanny who is an outstanding performer, often exceeding the family’s expectations. The outstanding performer may straighten out the pantry and toss out of date staples without being asked, or may come to work with a new coloring book and crayons to entertain a charge she knows is not feeling well. These ‘extras’ are not part of the nanny’s job description.

A cost of living increase is more in line with inflation – both cost of living and in some instances inflation in area nanny salaries. These can be referred to as COLA adjustments, a term commonly used in government.

Put together, these two components will become the annual salary adjustment. An example might be a very good – but not outstanding – nanny would be considered for a 2% merit increase and a 3% cost of living increase for a total increase of 5%. We typically see annual increases in the 3% – 6% range, exclusive of increases when new children arrive in the household.

Salary increases should be given every year, or more frequently if agreed to in the written work agreement.

Nanny Annual Performance Reviews

Typically, the performance evaluation for a nanny is on a schedule. Experts recommend a formal evaluation of the new nanny at one month, and again at three months. The next evaluation is due one year from nanny’s anniversary date, with annual nanny performance reviews thereafter. Well before the performance review date, begin to prepare for the evaluation. The preparation process ideally involves review of the Nanny Log, holding a preliminary meeting with the nanny, and nanny preparation of a self-evaluation. In two-parent households, we recommend that BOTH parents be involved in this process.

The following steps are suggested when conducting a nanny performance review:

• Before meeting with the nanny, review his or her job description and the Nanny Log for the review period. Review your observations, notes, and the previous performance evaluation. Locate and have ready any supporting information.
• Give the nanny advanced notice of the performance evaluation so that he or she has the chance to review and prepare.
• Hold a preliminary meeting with the nanny in private. The first meeting should take place before you write or deliver the formal performance evaluation. At this meeting, explain or review what will happen during the evaluation process and review the Performance Evaluation Form. Do this even if you have evaluated the nanny’s performance in the past. With the nanny, review his or her work agreement. Discuss which essential functions will be evaluated for the period.
• Conclude the meeting by scheduling the performance evaluation. Invite the nanny to complete the written self-evaluation prior to the next meeting. A self-evaluation may be used as the basis of discussion during the formal evaluation process. The self-evaluation is a valuable tool through which to discover the nanny’s perspective on her performance, as well as to identify interests related to goals and career development.
• Deliver the annual performance review according to your schedule in private – the kids absolutely should not be present for this conversation, whether the appraisal is good or bad. This quiet, uninterrupted setting allows you and your nanny to focus completely on the conversation at hand.
• Prepare and deliver your core message. This should be no more than two or three areas of strength or accomplishments, two or three areas to work on for improvement, including some brainstorming on how to get there, and one or two clear goals for the next period. Goals can be a simple as potty training, to as difficult as helping Susie become independent doing her homework.
• Remember, feedback matters. The only way for people to get better at what they do is for the people they work for to provide candid, timely performance evaluations. You should provide your nanny with an opportunity to provide you candid feedback too. If you are chronically late and this aggravates the nanny, be receptive to her concerns.

As described above, this really is a two step process. The annual wage review is a transaction that determines how much the family will pay the nanny. The annual performance review is a valuable conversation and exchange of feedback on how the relationship is going and planning for the future direction the relationship will take.

I am currently having a dispute with this company that they are slow to resolve. Their solutions so far have been unacceptable. Their replies to my submissions of payroll data say they will follow my instructions; however, they have not been doing that and process data for employees based upon their defaults rather than my submissions. If this company does not soon provide an acceptable solution (refund of 100% of the payments they made in error), then it's time to take our business to another provider.

Glad to hear we are making things easy on you. It sounds like we need to be a bit clearer in explaining how states sometime update unemployment tax rates mid-year, and how this can require payroll corrections mid-year. Certainly something we will work to improve upon. Regarding price changes, we have had only one price increase (5%) in the past 5 years. We're investing in technology upgrades to make payroll processing even easier for our clients and their employees, with no price increases planned at this time. I think you'll like what you see, but please do reach out to us if you feel you are not getting value for the price you pay.

Easy and Reliable

This service makes life so easy. We hired a nanny and they handled all of our payroll service and dealings with the state and federal government. All I had to do was report our hours each week and then the pay was directly withdrawn and drafted into my employee’s account. This service is perfect for anyone who has employees who work in and around the home.

I was happy and pleased to work with the staff, especially Luz Rodriguez. She helped me keep track of payroll dates and assisted me several times to resolve some issues. That being said, I did have problems between payroll due dates and dates needed by Homework Solutions to submit to the bank. That info was not presented clearly. The payroll dates on the calendar were too small for seniors and disabled people to read. I mentioned this several times, nothing was corrected. The Support at Home staff finally corrected this for clients. Additionally, I did not KNOW the option of sending hours by e-mail, or getting e-mail reminders until I asked about it. This option should be stated in the introduction, as phones lines are often busy when reporting hours. Given the inherent difficulty of the elderly and disabled, it is imperative that you listen to feedback so you can better serve the needs of this community.Thank you for asking for this feedback. Homework Solutions provides me with…great quality service at an affordable price.

Homework Solutions provides me with high qualify payroll services at an affordable price. When I and other clients had problems with the VA Department of Revenue, the people at HWS were on it. They worked with the state to fix the problem for us all. I used a big payroll company before finding HWS. It was expensive, and the service was terrible (they would "forget" to process my payroll but still charge me for it!). I switched over 10 years ago, and have been happy ever since.

Excellent job

HomeWork Solutions is doing excellent job, they are always very helpful and responsive. Never had any issues with correctness of information, and am always able to reach them by phone when needed. The only minor challenge I have had is the short duration from the end of the reporting period to the deadline for submitting the timesheet, which is less than 24 hours. The timesheet has to be signed by both the employer and the employee, which makes it tricky especially when I am travelling for work.

FIRSTLY, I have no problem when admitting when I am wrong I spoke negatively of this company with quick judgement of false information. They have actually gone above and beyond for myself as well as my employer. I’m very thankful for the prompt response and assistance and and again my deepest apologies for the rude comment.

Homework Solutions income tax filing issues

All your help was great except I could have used a more detailed explanation of how all the tax info was to be used on the tax forms. I ended up double paying one of the fees(can't remember which one) and had to file an amendment. I was just lucky I found the error somehow.
