Additionally, XAT essay writing is a part of the exam wherein the students must write one of 250-300 words. This section is included along with the General Knowledge section.

If you are here to know more about XAT essay writing, then you have come to the right place. In this blog, you will learn about the XAT essay writing section, what topics can be asked and much more. But, before we move ahead with this blog, here is a quick overview of the XAT exam which will be quite useful for you.

What is the XAT Essay Writing Test?

XAT essay writing section is very similar to the Written Ability Test (WAT) which is conducted by IIMs. However, the only difference is that all XAT takers have to do the essay section in the exam, while only the shortlisted candidates appear for the WAT round.

One must remember that the percentile score does not include essay performance. But worry not, as the essay score does carry some weightage in the calculation of the final merit and it varies from college to college.

XAT Essay Writing Evaluation Parameters 📄

The main objective behind giving the XAT essay writing section is to evaluate the candidates based on their ability to think logically. The examiner tests the candidates’ ability to express themselves effectively. Speaking of which, we have listed the evaluation parameters for your essay as follows:

Structure of Essay 🏗️

In the essay, the first thing that the examiner checks is whether the essay flows logically or not from one paragraph to another. If the candidate has not logically stated their arguments in chronological order then there are chances of marks deduction. Keep in mind that proper structuring of sentences will fetch you marks.

Knowledge 🧠

Part 1 of the essay tests your subject knowledge while Part 2 of the essay tests if you are aware of the ongoing debates in the public media as well as important events, personalities, laws etc.

All the facts incorporated in your essay need to have some weightage to earn marks.

Creativity 💡

As future managers, the candidates need to produce new ideas as part of their job. Hence, the evaluators will expect your essay to be full of innovative ideas.

Lastly, you must keep in mind that you don’t make any grammatical mistakes like spelling errors, or punctuation errors as there will be a penalty.

👉 Be updated with current affairs so that you can deal with any topic.

👉 Avoid using slang, jargon and abbreviations.

👉 Avoid repeating the same point again and again.

👉 Express your thoughts and arguments clearly.

👉 Make draft points before actually beginning the essay

The marks allotted for the essay are not calculated while calculating the overall percentile. However, it is evaluated only after the candidate gets shortlisted for the Group Discussion (GD) or Personal Interview (PI) round.

Looking at last year’s paper, the safe score in the XAT exam is 40 and above which leads to 90 and 95 percentile.

XLRI cut-off for 2024 is expected to be at 95 percentile for males while 92 for female students.

The following table gives you the XAT essay topics over the past few years. These are important XAT essay topics 2024 that have good chances of being asked this year as well.

Now we shall share with you the strategies to improve your essay writing skills.

Gautam Puri, Vice Chairman, Career Launcher shares, “The evaluators not only look for language skills, but also for the thought process involved, the spectrum of ideas, and your knowledge pertaining to the topic at hand. Having a fair knowledge of contemporary topics will give you an edge. So reading newspapers, especially the editorial columns, is highly advised.”

Here we present to you 6 strategies for acing the essay writing section of XAT.

Analyze the topic and decide the way you want to drive it

After getting the topic, decide the direction in which you want to drive your essay into. Since mostly the topics are abstract in nature, you can contextualize them to politics, social issues, or currently happening. Once you decide on the context, your job will get much easier. “Try to think of possible topics with the current trending news and have your opinions on it.

Whilst reading the newspaper, think about your opinion on particular news. Also, think about the points in favor and opposition of that news,” mentions Ravi Prinshu , XAT 2021 topper with 99.85 percentile and XLRI Jamshedpur student.

Assemble the points before starting

The next step is to gather the points. Jot down the points in the proper order that you want to present in your essay. Support your points with the help of facts and figures, examples, etc. The more you can substantiate your points, the better it will be for the evaluation process. “I strongly advise candidates to brush up their vocabulary and practice structured essay writing. It will certainly help in getting your thoughts together and putting them into a structure while writing the essay.,” said Farzan Shaikh, another XAT 2021 topper with a 99.94 percentile.

Write a draft before starting the essay

Prepare the structure and draft essay before starting the actual essay. Do not take more than five minutes for it. Divide your points to be included in the introduction, body, and conclusion. If you prepare the draft, it would be much more convenient for you to pen down the actual essay. You can do the necessary editing and improve the language of the essay.

Structure your essay properly

Make sure that your essay consists of three parts, introduction, body, and conclusion. The essay should be around 200 to 300 words. You can separate the three parts into paragraphs. You can also add specific facts and figures through bullet points. Rishabh Bajpayi, XAT 2021 99.85 percentile shares, "I had decided to structure my essay properly, so I began with an introduction, moved on to the body, tried to illustrate with examples if possible, made my inferences, and reached a conclusion. I found having a basic structure in place helped me write essays faster and they seemed to have a nicer flow."

Keep time in check

The duration of the XAT essay is 25 minutes. Keep track of your time so that you do not exceed the time limit. Since Essay Writing would be the last question of the 3-hour XAT paper, save your energy and time till the last 25 minutes. Do not spend over 5 minutes drafting the essay and before submitting, revise the final copy.

You can find the detailed syllabus of XAT 2024 below. Candidates appearing for the exam must be thorough with the entire syllabus.

Candidates appearing for the XAT 2024 exam must be aware of the following changes in the exam pattern:

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions have been introduced.

In the redesigned XAT exam pattern, each unattempted question after the first 8 will result in a negative marking penalty of 0.10 marks.

The time of the XAT 2024 exam has been changed from 9.30 AM to 12.40 PM. The time duration for the XAT exam has been extended. Instead of three hours, the XAT 2024 exam will now run for three hours and thirty minutes.

The total number of questions has gone up from 99 to 101.

The descriptive essay test, which was discontinued in 2019, has been reintroduced. Now there will be both MCQs and descriptive questions.

The XAT 2024 exam paper will have 4 MCQ sections and 1 essay writing section.

Percentiles will not be determined by taking into account the GK section having 25 questions.

The general knowledge and essay writing portions will not carry any negative marking.

There were five options for each MCQ, but only one of them is correct.

The essay of each candidate will be assessed after they have been chosen for the interview process.

The countdown counter at the top, right-hand side of the screen displays how much time is available for you to complete the examination for the part of the question paper you are answering (Part 1/Part 2).

After the allotted 165 minutes are completed, Part 1 will be locked. You will be moved to Part 2, the section of the exam that includes the general knowledge and essay questions.

For the initial part of the XAT exam (the first three sections), the scribe will get an additional 25 minutes in 2024.

Candidates were not permitted to leave the examination center before the XAT 2024 exam is finished.

PwD applicants could submit their responses at any time between 165 and 220 minutes for Part 1 and between 15 and 20 minutes for Part 2 of the exam. A PwD candidate could therefore leave the lab after 180 minutes.

Are you feeling lost and unsure about what career path to take after completing 12th standard?

Say goodbye to confusion and hello to a bright future!

No, CAT scores are not accepted as admission criteria at XLRI. Candidates must take the XAT exam rather than the CAT in order to get admitted to XLRI. IIMs and other B Schools use CAT scores. However, both CAT and XAT scores are accepted by numerous other top b-schools in India.

Although both CAT and XAT have the same syllabus (apart from Decision Making and GK), the variation is in the sorts of questions and degree of difficulty. Both the XAT and the CAT are harder than other MBA entry examinations in terms of their level of difficulty.

The answer to how difficult is XAT from CAT, aspirants need to be aware of certain factors. Nearly all of the XAT's sections have a moderate to a high level of difficulty. An extra, highly challenging component of the XAT tests decision-making skills. Furthermore, it includes a GK portion that is absent from other competitive tests like the CAT, NMAT, etc.

Both the XAT and the CAT score highly in the quantitative ability and data interpretation portions. Similar to how the VARC and LR questions of the CAT are challenging, the Verbal Ability and Decision Making questions of the XAT are challenging. As a result, it is a little bit more challenging to score in certain CAT and XAT areas.

The XAT Analysis 2024 and candidate feedback predict that the exam will be moderate to difficult. Expect straightforward answers to the queries posed to VALR and DM. However, because most of the QADI section's questions were lengthy, that part was the hardest. According to XAT Analysis 2024, the GK segment in Part 2 was also challenging.

Yes, XAT 2024 has a negative marking. Candidates must properly understand the XAT format and pattern in order to succeed. Every appropriate response gives one mark. After 8 failed attempts, 0.10 of your total score is deducted. Each wrong response leads to a 0.25 point negative marking.

In the General Knowledge section of XAT 2024, a total of 25 MCQ-style questions will be asked. The questions are drawn from the most pertinent areas of business, economics, and current affairs, among others. Along with the other three categories, XAT GK questions will be a significant component of the XAT 2024 computer-based online test and the application procedure for XLRI.

XAT 2024 will have a total of five sections. In order to establish your percentile and merit position, the XAT syllabus for 2024 will use essential topics from areas such as Verbal and Logical Ability (VA & LR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation (QA & DI), General Knowledge (GK) and Essay Writing.

Yes, there will be an essay writing test in XAT 2024. The essay writing test has a 25-minute time limit, which the applicant must adhere to. The XAT 2024 essay writing test should have a 150–200 word limit. The XAT essay writing test does not have any negative marking. The last question on the XAT exam is a question on essay writing.

As of right now, the XAT paper format for 2024 will have five sections, 100 MCQs, and one descriptive essay. Accordingly, there will be a total of 101 questions in the updated XAT exam pattern for 2024.

XAT Preparation 2024 – Section Wise Tips & Strategies

XAT Preparation 2024 – XLRI, Jamshedpur, will be organizing the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2024. XAT stands out distinctly from CAT, being regarded as one of the most challenging management entrance exams, according to experts. The XAT question paper comprises approximately 100 questions covering Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, English, Decision Making, and General Awareness. Notably, the essay writing component, previously removed, has been reinstated in the XAT syllabus. The exam will now consist of four sections, including the essay section. In this article we have shared tips and strategies for XAT Preparation 2024.

XAT Preparation 2024 -Exam Pattern

In 2024, those in charge of the XAT Exam made a few tweaks. They introduced something new called ‘Mock Keyboard Testing’ in Part B. The General Knowledge (GK) and Essay writing sections shifted to Part C. The number of questions increased to 105 from 101, and the entire exam now lasted for 210 minutes.

Note:  There is no sectional time limit for Part-1

How to Prepare for XAT 2024?

The XAT 2024 is scheduled for January 7, 2024, leaving only two months for exam preparation. Now is the crucial time to cover the remaining topics in the XAT syllabus and begin practicing mock tests. Successful XAT preparation in 2024 requires a comprehensive approach, encompassing not just syllabus coverage but also dedicated practice and revision. Many of you likely began your preparation earlier, gaining proficiency in important topics.

The XAT 2024 exam is a gateway for admission to XLRI Jamshedpur, XLRI Delhi, and over 1,000 other B-schools across India. To excel in XAT, one needs to master Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Verbal & Logical Ability, General Knowledge, and Decision Making.

Identify your strengths and weaknesses:  In XAT preparation the first and foremost thing that can be done is to identify your strengths and weaknesses in the XAT syllabus. Work on the weak points more in the initial days of preparation so that you can score good marks on those topics.

Revise important concepts:  Another most useful tip is to revise or brush up on your concepts, it can be mathematical formulas to current affairs to English. All of the sections are important and scoring good in all sections will automatically improve your chances of qualifying for the XAT

Practice mock tests:  Regular practice of XAT mock tests as per the latest XAT exam pattern will not only help you in increasing your speed and accuracy but also help you in identifying your strong and weak areas, which can then be worked upon for improvement.

Solve previous year papers:  If possible you can also try to solve sample papers from the previous XAT exams. It will help you in knowing the kind of questions that can be expected in the XAT.

XAT Preparation Tips – Section Wise

XAT preparation consists of careful planning and execution. XAT new exam pattern consists of 4 sections and we are providing you with a separate preparation strategy for each section.

XAT 2024 – Tips for Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR)

The section of VALR in XAT is tough as compared to other MBA entrance exams. It consists of 26 questions and the primary focus is on reading comprehension. The XAT reading comprehension passages are tough as they are long and information dense, based upon inference.

The other areas that are covered under the VALR section include para jumbles, poem comprehension, critical reasoning, filling in the blanks and correcting the sentence etc.

To master the VALR section candidates need to read extensively. It helps by reducing the time required for RC passages and also helps in preparing for grammar and vocabulary questions in the paper.

XAT RC based passages are mostly from the fields of philosophy, art and culture, psychology and history. It is not fact based therefore the candidate has to inculcate the practice of reading such topics

It is advised not to do speed reading for XAT passages as they are inference based and dense. It is different from the fact-based passages that are provided in other entrance exams. Hence, it is better to read the passage properly to understand it better.

Do not spend too much time in one section as time is the key in XAT. Also, there is negative marking so do not attempt any answer purely based on guess.

Try to complete the VALR section within 50-55 minutes as the Quant and decision making section of XAT also needs to be attended and scored well so as to get a higher percentile.

XAT 2024 – Tips for Decision Making (DM)

The decision making section in XAT is unique to XAT as no other MBA entrance exam has this section. Therefore it is of prime importance in the XAT preparation strategy. XAT paper will consist of 21 questions from this section. The lack of reference makes it a difficult section to navigate.

The questions in this section are mostly based on mathematical decision making or behavioural or situational decision making.

The best tip for XAT decision making section preparation is to solve questions from previous year papers for this section.

While you are solving a question, try to understand the situation from the point of view of each stakeholder involved, this will broaden your perspective and expand your critical analysis skills.

It may happen that in a particular question there will be as such no correct answer, but such a course of action needs to be taken that will be beneficial to all the stakeholders involved.

You may encounter some questions where opinions are presented as facts to indulge you in thinking these are very essential to the question but do not get carried away by facts and always rely on your critical thinking to make a decision.

Do not try to guess your answer without reading the full question as there is negative marking and an incorrect guess can cost you a lot.

XAT 2024 – Tips for Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (QADI)

The section for QADI is the one having the most number of questions and plays a vital role in making it to the XAT merit list. There are 28 questions from this section with unequal distribution in quant and data interpretation.

The majority of the questions coming in the QADI is from the QA section while around 30% questions are from DI. The DI questions are calculation intensive.

Prepare for the QADI section by practising questions from the topics of Algebra, Geometry, Coordinate geometry, profit and loss, probability, bar graphs, pie charts, simple and compound interest, simplification etc.

Try to practice easy questions first and then ramp up the difficulty level as you gain speed and accuracy.

Practising mock tests for the QADI section is essential to increase your speed and accuracy. It also helps you to identify weak areas that need improvement.

Try and practice more DI questions as these questions require extensive calculation and can be time-consuming.

Make a habit of memorising tables up to 20 and square root values till 100 as these may prove beneficial during the paper.

Do not attempt a question that you are not confident about. It will lead to negative marking and also waste your time. In XAT, time is an important factor.

XAT 2024 – Tips for General Knowledge

The GK section for XAT consists of 25 questions and has a time limit of 15 minutes for attempting the questions. This section is based on Static GK topics such as Indian Constitution, economy, currency, capital, who’s who etc and current affairs like International news, new discoveries, latest schemes, advances in science and technology etc.

The best tip for XAT preparation for the GK section is to prepare for current affairs and awards, latest developments, full forms, economy, country capital and currency.

Make a habit of reading the daily newspaper as it will help you develop awareness of the latest developments in India and World.

Do not try attempting a question that you are not confident about. Although the GK section has no negative marking and is not considered for final percentile calculation, it is useful in the later processes.

XAT 2024 – Last Week Preparation Tips

  • Do not try to attempt any new topic as it will not be an ideal time to learn new concepts.
  • Revise your concepts and fine tune your plan
  • Go through the shortcuts and formulas so as to be fully confident in attempting the paper
  • Read interviews of previous XAT toppers and gather information about the right approach to solving XAT paper.

XAT is one of the prestigious MBA entrance exams in India and selection in XAT paves way for a good career in management. Therefore, candidates are required to put effort and dedication for excelling in the XAT entrance exam. We hope that this blog helps the candidates in adding value to their XAT preparation.

Introduction

Some historical background.

essays in xat

The first sources about ancient Egyptian mathematics date to what is called the Middle Kingdom. The Egyptian civilization rose and declined several times. The Old Kingdom represents the first rise of the Egyptian civilization. During this period the country was unified and the great pyramids are constructed. We do not have a lot of information about this period besides the main monuments of the rulers and the higher ranking officials. We do not have any scientific writing from this period. As a result egyptologists are still not sure for instance how the pyramids were constructed.

The Egytian state went into a decline after the time of the great pyramid builders and the civilization rose to greatness again several centuries later. From this time period we have scientific writings. The Moscow papyrus dates to roughly 1700 BCE and contains several algebraic and geometric problems together with their solutions. Some of the geometry problems concern the volume of a truncated pyramid, the surface area of a hemispherical bowl to give some examples. Several papyri from this time period were found in Lahun (sometimes called Illahun) and nearby Kahun. Some of these texts concern the bookkeeping of royal estates and some include mathematical writings.

One of the biggest resources we have for mathematical writing is the Rhind papyrus, named after Alexander Rhind who purchased the papyrus in the 19th century and brought it to England. The papyrus is sometimes called the Ahmes papyrus after the scribe who wrote it. This papyrus contains an inscription dating it to the time of a pharaoh named Khamudy. This must be one of the smaller rulers from the northern part of Egypt from ca. 1650 BCE. The country was in decline at that point, and this period is referred to as the second intermediate period.

There are other sources of mathematics from the long history of Ancient Egypt. On this page a selection of some of the more famous writings concerning geometry have been included.

The mathematics as known from these sources

It should be noted that we only have a handful of resources that show us what mathematical knowledge the Egyptians had. It is possible more was known but that the writings were lost over the course of time.

From the limited information we have it appears that the Egyptians did not develop much in the form of theory. There is not much facility with symbolic manipulation that can be gathered from the texts either. The mathematics seems to have been experimentally based. They were able to develop methods for finding solutions to common problems. The papyri consist of lists of problems with their solutions. Occasionally a method for checking ones work is given, so that the scribe could check their work was correct. If this is truly the state of Egyptian mathematics of that time (and not a misconception due to the limited information we have), then this paints a picture of people who quite ingeniously were able to develop all the necessary mathematical tools and techniques to construct all their great monuments and administer their estates without having the benefits of theoretical mathematics.

The papyri contain many types of mathematical problems. A famous fact about Egyptian mathematics is that they used unit fractions. They used 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, etc. The only non-unit fraction they used was 2/3. This means that their computations could at times be somewhat laborious. Note for instance that in the Rhind papyrus problem 56, the answer is given as "1/2 + 1/5 + 1/50". We would have brought the numbers over a common denominator and expressed that answer as 36/50. To deal with fraction, the Egyptians used tables. Some of these tables have been preserved in the mathematical papyri. A nice description can be found at [ mathpages ]. It is not known why the Egyptians wrote their fractions like this.

Egyptian terms used in the papyri

Peremwes.jpg

In the literature we also find the spelling seked. The seqed can be thought of - in modern terms - as computing the cotangent of an angle. It computes the ratio run/rise.

The Egyptians used several different units of measurement. A larger list can be found in Rossi (page 61). [1] Some units of measurement used in the examples below are:

  • The (royal) cubit (meh in Egyptian) was approximately 52.5 cm (= 20.7 in. = 1' 8.7"). The royal cubit was a principal unit of measurement in architecture. The egyptians also used what was called the "small cubit". The small cubit was approximately the length of a forearm (45 cm = 17.7 in). The royal cubit was equal to 7 palms.
  • The palm (shesep in Egyptian) was approximately 7.5 cm (= 3 in) long. The measurement - and the name - seem to have been derived from the actual width of a person's palm. One palm was equal to 4 fingers.
  • The finger (djeba in Egyptian) was one of the smallest units of length and measured ca. 1.875 cm (= .7 in). This is approximately the actual width of a finger.
  • The khet , also called the "rod of cord" may have referred to a knotted cord 100 cubits long. A khet measured ca. 52.5 m (= 172' 2.9").
  • The setat is 1 square khet, which is 10,000 square cubits.

Volume and weight:

  • The hekat is equivalent to ca. 4.8 liters.
  • The deben is a measure of weight. In the early history of Ancient Egypt is was equivalent to 13.6 grammes. After ca. 1600 BCE is was equivalent to 91 grammes.

Egyptian Geometry

We only have a limited number of problems from ancient Egypt that concern geometry. Geometric problems show that they knew how to compute areas of several geometric shapes and volumes of cylinders and pyramids.

Computing Triangles

It is clear that they knew that the area of a triangle is 1/2*base*height. Problem 51 in RMP and problem 7 in MMP use this formula.

Problem 51 RMP Example of producing (i.e. Calculating) [the area] of a triangle (spdt) of land. What is the area of a triangle of height 10 khet and a base of 4 khet? The answer is computed to be 20 setjat. (1/2*4*10). [2]

Problem 4 of the MMP is a copy of problem 51 of the RMP.

Problem 7 MMP. "A triangle of given area is such that it altitude is 2.5 times its base; find both." [3] . More specifically the problem states: “[There is a triangle with area 20 [setjat] and 'bank' (idb – ratio of height to base) of 2 ½; find the length and the breadth of the triangle. [2]

Problem 17 MMP. Given a triangle with area 20 (setjat) and a length that is 1/3+1/5 of its breadth; Find the length and breadth. (The answer is length 10 and breadth 4) [2]

Computing Rectangles

Problem 49 RMP. Find the area of a rectangular plot of land measuring 10 khet by 2. (There may be an error in the papyrus here; it possibly should be a 10 by 1 area?) [2]

Problem 6 MMP. Given a rectangular enclosure of 12 units area and the ratio of the sides as 1 : 3/4, find the lengths of the sides. This problem seems to be identical to one of the Kahun Papyri in London. The problem is also interesting because it is clear that the Egyptians were familiar with square roots. They even had a special hieroglyph for finding a square root. It looks like a corner and appears in the fifth line of the problem. We suspect that they had tables giving the square roots of some often used numbers. No such tables have been found however.

essays in xat

At the bottom (sixth line) is an illustration showing a rectangle with area 12 written in the interior, 4 at the top (in Clagett's book it's 3 at the top, bt that clearly should be a 4) and 3 at its side.

The steps of the solution given in both papyri is the same:

<math>1 : 3/4 = 4/3; \ 4/3 * 12 =16; \ \sqrt{16} = 4 \ (=x);\ 4 * 3/4 =3 \ (=y)</math> [3]

Problem 18 MMP. Find the area of a length of garment-cloth measuring 5 cubits 5 pals by 2 palms. (The answer is 80 [square palms]) [2]

Lahun Papyrus Problem 1 in LV.4 is given as: "An area of 40 "mH" by 3 "mH" shall be divided in 10 areas, each of which shall have a width that is 1/2 1/4 of their length." [4] A translation of the problem and its solution as it appears on the fragment is given on the website maintained by University College London. [5]

Circles and Areas of More Complicated Forms

Problem 48 RMP Compare the area of a circle (approximated by an octagon) and its circumscribing square. This problem's result is used in problem 50.

<math> 9^2 -4 \frac{1}{2} (3) (3) = 63</math>

Next we approximate 63 to be 64 and note that <math>64=8^2</math>

Thus the number <math>4(\frac{8}{9})^2 = 3 \frac{13}{81}</math> plays the role of π.

That this octagonal figure, whose area is easily calculated, so accurately approximates the area of the circle is just plain good luck.

Problem 50 RMP. Find the area of a round field of diameter 9 khet. [2] This is solved by using the approximation that circular field of diameter 9 has the same area as a square of side 8.

Problem 52 RMP Find the area of a trapezium with (apparently) equally slanting sides. The lengths of the parallel sides and the distance between them being the given numbers. [3]

Problem 10 MMP. Computes the area of a hemisphere. [3]

Volumes of Cylinders

Problem 41 RMP. Computes the volume of a cylindrical granary of diameter 9 and height 10. [2]

Problem 42 RMP. Computes the volume of a cylindrical granary of diameter 8 and height 6. (or possibly height 9 and breadth 6? There seem to be different translations of this problem.) [2]

Problem 43 RMP. Computes the volume of a cylindrical granary of diameter 9 and height 10. [2]

Problem 60 RMP. This exercise seems to concern a pillar or a cone instead of a pyramid. It is rather small and steep, with a seked of four palms (per cubit). [7] The problem and its solution as decribed in the papyrus are given in Clagett. [2]

Lahun Papyrus A problem appearing in IV.3 computes the volume of a granary with a circular base of diameter 12 "mH" and height 8 "mH". A similar problem and procedure can be found in the Rhind papyrus (problem 43).

Volumes of Rectangular Parallellopipeds

Problen 44 RMP. Computes the volume of a rectangular granary of length 10, breadth 10 and height 10. [2]

Problems 45 and 46 RMP Discuss the volumes and dimensions of Parallelopipedal granaries. [3]

Problem 14 MMP. The base is a square of side 4 cubits, the top is a square of side 2 cubits and the height of the truncated pyramid is 6 cubits.

essays in xat

The text reads:

You are to square this 4; result 16. You are to double 4; result 8.

You are to square this 2; result 4. You are to add the 16 and the 8 and the 4; result 28.

You are to take 1/3 of 6; result 2. You are to take 28 twice; result 56. See it is of 56.

Problem 56 RMP This problem indicates an understanding of the idea of geometric similarity. This problem discusses the ratio run/rise, also known as the seqed. Such a formula would be need for building pyramids.

In modern terms the problem essentially asks to compute the cotangent for some angle. Note that the Egyptians never used any angle measures, so they technically did not use any trigonometry as these formulas would not have held any meaning for them.

Cause thou that I know the seked of it. You are to take half of 360; It becomes 180. You are to reckon with 250 to find 180. Result: 1/2 + 1/5 + 1/50.

A cubit being 7 palms, you are to multiply by 7.

1/2 --- 3 + 1/2

1/5 --- 1 + 1/3 + 1/15

1/50 --- 1/10 + 1/25

Problem 57 RMP. The height of a pyramid is calculated from the base length and the seked (egyptian for slope).

You are to divide 1 cubit by the seked doubled, which amounts to 10 1/2.

You are to reckon with 10 1/2 to find 7 for this one cubit.

Reckon with 10 1/2.

Two-thirds of 10 1/2 is 7.

You are to reckon with 140, for this is the ukha thebt.

Make two-thirds of 140, namely 93 1/3.

Problem 58 RMP. Determine the seked, given the length of the base and the height. The seked is again five palms, one finger (per cubit). [7] In Clagett the exact problem is given as:

In a pyramid whose altitude is 93 1/3 make known the seqed of it when its base side is 140 [cubits]." (The answer is 5 palms 1 finger) [2]

Problem 59 RMP. This exercise contains two parts.

59A In a pyramid whose base side is 12 [cubits] and whose altitude is 8 [cubits]; what is its seqed? (Answer: 5 palms 1 finger)

59B may be a computation to check the answer: If you construct a pyramid with base side 12 [cubits] and with a seqed of 5 palms 1 finger; what is its altitude? (Answer: 8 cubits) [2]

Mathematical sources

The rhind mathematical papyrus.

This papyrus is sometimes called the Ahmes papyrys. Written by a scribe named Ahmes (Ahmose) in ca. 1550 BCE and bought in modern times by Alexander Henry Rhind. The papyrus lists many problems covering topics in algebra, geometry and other areas in mathematics.

In the Rhind papyrus there are nineteen problems of a geometric nature: nos. 41-46 and 48-60. The first six problems show how to calculate volume. The problems include finding volumes of right circular cylinders (granaries) and finding volumes and dimensions of paralellopipedal granaries.

Several problems from nos. 48-60 show how to compute area. Formulas are given for the area of a triangle and several four sided figures. The remaining problems "deal with the relation of the lengths of two sides of a right triangle which corresponds to the cotangent of e angle which a face of a regular pyramid makes with its base. This is called the seked of the pyramid." [3]

The Moscow Papyrus

essays in xat

The Moscow Mathematical Papyrus is also called the Golenischev Mathematical Papyrus, after its first owner, Egyptologist Vladimir Goleniščev. The Papyrus dates to the Middle Kingdom, ca. 1700 BCE. The Moscow papyrus is smaller than the Rhind papyrus. The most often quoted problem is problem 14. In this problem the volume of a truncated pyramid is computed.

Berlin Papyrus

Also known as Berlin P. 6619, this papyrus dates to the Middle Kingdom. It dates to roughly the same historical period as the Moscow papyrus mentioned above. The papyrus contains two problems that solve simultaneous equations. Another papyrus now in Berlin (P. 11529) contains exercises that compute the volume of a tapered column. P. 11529 dates to the second century AD and appears to contain several mistakes. [8]

Egyptian Mathematical Leather Roll

The leather roll was bought in Egypt by Rhind at approximately the same time that the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus was purchased (mid 19th century). The problems are mainly algebraic in nature. "It consists of 26 unit fraction series each of which is an expression of a rational number of the form or into an Egyptian fraction.". [9]

Lahun Papyri

The Lahun papyri consist of several fragments. They are sometime referred to as the Kahun papyri. The papyri date to the Middle Kingdom which is the same time period that gave us the Moscow papyrus. The papyri were discovered in the late 19th centuy in the city of Lahun in Egypt.

A problem appearing in IV.3 computes the volume of a granary with a circular base of diameter 12 "mH" and height 8 "mH". A similar problem and procedure can be found in the Rhind papyrus (problem 43).

Problem 1 in LV.4 is given as: "An area of 40 "mH" by 3 "mH" shall be divided in 10 areas, each of which shall have a width that is 1/2 1/4 of their length." [10]

A translation of the problem and its solution as it appears on the fragment is given on the website maintained by University College London. [11]

The other mathematical problems in these papyrus fragments are algebraic in nature.

In Poll, Most MBA Candidates Say They Want To Use AI To Craft Essays, But They’re Wary Of The Tech

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

In a new Kaplan/Manhattan Prep survey, a majority of MBA candidates said they would like to be able to use generative AI like ChatGPT to craft their admissions essays. iStockphoto

Warren Buffett is not a fan of AI — yet. The 93-year-old founder and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway told the company’s shareholders at their annual meeting May 4 that “we let a genie out of the bottle when we developed nuclear weapons” and “AI is somewhat similar — it’s partway out of the bottle.”

Though he acknowledged that the technology could change the world for the better, Buffett, the legendary investor known as the “Oracle of Omaha,” said he isn’t sold yet . “It has enormous potential for good and enormous potential for harm,” he said. “And I just don’t know how that plays out.”

Across industries, it’s playing out rapidly: According to the International Monetary Fund, nearly 40% of global employment could be disrupted by AI, from medicine to finance to music. Count graduate business education among the impacted sectors: AI is transforming how teachers teach and how students learn so quickly, business schools can hardly keep up.

MBA CANDIDATES WANT GUARDRAILS IN THE USE OF AI IN ADMISSIONS

Rochester Simon Dean Sevin Yeltekin: “Much like getting support from an admissions counselor, generative AI can be an effective resource for applicants”

Nor has MBA admissions evaded the transformative power of AI. The debate over whether to use ChatGPT or other generative AI programs to craft key parts of a candidate’s MBA application — particularly the essay — has raged since day one, when the tech’s viability first entered the public consciousness.

Prospective students, for their part, have been split on how to employ the technology — and that split continues, as evidenced by a new poll released today (May 8) by Kaplan , the global educational services company, and its sister company Manhattan Prep, a leading test prep provider. The survey of more than 300 aspiring MBA students finds mixed attitudes toward GenAI and its use in the admissions process, with 56% saying they should be allowed to use AI tools to help them write their admissions essays, but only with certain guidelines and restrictions; 20% saying they don’t think they should be allowed under any circumstances; 18% saying use should be unrestricted; and the remaining 7% unsure.

“Aspiring MBA students are going to have to take the GMAT exam without the use of GenAI,” says Stacey Koprince, director of content and curriculum for Manhattan Prep. “And they also built up their GPAs without using it either, considering how new the technology is, so it’s not surprising that many think it’s necessary for business schools to put guardrails around its use in the admissions process. At the same time, our results show that many are eager to use GenAI to their advantage if allowed.”

IF ALLOWED, 60% SAY THEY WILL USE AI IN THEIR ESSAYS

The Manhattan Prep/Kaplan survey was conducted online in March-April 2024 and included responses from 306 aspiring business school students across the United States. It complements a separate survey of business school admissions officers that found that only a handful of B-schools have policies in place directing students how they can use AI in their admissions essays, signaling the issue is still unsettled. The latter was conducted by phone and email with 75 business schools across the United States — among them are 8 of the top 50 schools, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report — between August 2023 and February 2024.

Prospective MBA students in the more recent survey are concerned not only with the broader question of AI use — they also don’t want their competitors to get an unfair advantage. Exactly half in the more recent survey of aspiring MBA students say AI unfairly levels the playing field for applicants who don’t possess strong writing skills; 32% don’t believe that to be the case; the remaining 18% are unsure.

But if it’s allowed, more say they will go for it: Of those surveyed, 60% said they would likely use AI in their admissions essays if the schools they were applying to allowed it; 24% said they were unlikely to use it; 16% said they were unsure.

‘MANY B-SCHOOLS WILL BE DEVELOPING GenAI POLICIES IN THE COMING YEAR’

The acceptability of AI increases the further one gets in the admissions process. Once applicants have proven their mettle and achieved admission, two-thirds (67%) say B-schools should allow them to use GenAI as part of their classwork/academic experience, with certain guidelines and restrictions. Another 20% believe enrolled students should be allowed to use GenAI with no restrictions at all. That’s nearly 90% who see AI use inside MBA programs as acceptable under certain conditions.

Another 8% said it shouldn’t be allowed under any circumstances; and the remaining 6% were unsure.

Asked how often they use AI in the workplace or in their personal lives, 8% said “always”; 25% said “frequently”; 38% said “occasionally”; 19% said “rarely”; and 10% said “never.”

Koprince says the days of uncertainty about schools’ policies are likely coming to a close.

“While results from Manhattan Prep and Kaplan’s most recent business school admissions officers survey show that most MBA programs have no policy at all when it comes to allowing applicants to use GenAI in admissions essays, we don’t believe that’s a tenable long-term position, as they will increasingly get questions from prospective students who want to know the boundaries of acceptable use,” Koprince says. “Our prediction: Many business schools will be developing GenAI policies in the coming year.”

REGARDLESS OF TOOLS, ‘SUBMISSIONS MUST BE AUTHENTIC’

B-schools continue to adapt to the AI gold rush. At the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School , Dean Sevin Yeltekin says the school is “leaning into generative AI by incorporating it into our course content and by launching a degree program in business analytics and applied AI and utilizing it in our school’s operations. We believe that combined with domain knowledge and used responsibly, generative AI can be a very effective productivity and learning tool.”

Simon’s approach to generative AI in the admissions process is similar, Yeltekin tells P&Q : “Much like getting support from an admissions counselor, generative AI can be an effective resource for applicants. Regardless of the tools or resources that an applicant uses, their submissions must be authentic in both tone and content. Simon admissions committee members are experienced readers and interviewers, trained to look for authenticity and screen for consistency in a candidate’s communication style and message.

“Our high-touch process that includes admission essays, interview feedback, and interactions with alumni and current students allows us to triangulate on the authentic applicant and holistically evaluate their background, behavioral skills and fit for the program.”

‘IT’S NOT ABOUT FILLING PAGES WITH WORDS’

Petia Whitmore , the founder of admissions consulting firm  My MBA Path and a former dean of MBA admissions at Babson College, writes in a commentary published May 7 by Poets&Quants that “No one should be surprised that if you simply ask ChatGPT to write a Harvard MBA essay, you will end up with a cliché overload.” She points to a sample AI essay published last spring in Poets&Quants :

“I am thrilled to submit my application for the Harvard Business School MBA program, and I appreciate the opportunity to elaborate on what I believe makes me a strong candidate for the program.

Throughout my academic and professional career, I have developed a passion for business and a desire to make a meaningful impact in the world through my work. My experiences have shaped my perspectives, and I believe they will allow me to bring a unique and valuable perspective to the classroom and beyond.”

The former managing director of The MBA Tour adds that as the technology evolves, more applicants will find ways to employ it successfully. But in the last application cycle, none of the candidates she worked with had any interest in using it.

“All but one of my MBA candidates this cycle were admitted to at least one of their top MBA choices (yes, even the ones who only applied to H/S/W….),” Whitmore writes. “Not a single one had to use ChatGPT to write their essays — or had any interest in even trying.

“Knowing what to write about can only come from two sources — knowing yourself well (self-reflection and self-awareness) and knowing your schools well.

“And when it comes to the actual writing: Remember, it’s not about filling pages with words.”

2024 met gala doja cat

Doja Cat Wears Nothing but a Wet, White T-Shirt Gown to the 2024 Met Gala

The rapper seemed at ease in what some would call a controversial look

preview for Doja Cat’s Pop Performance Art

Doja Cat loves an unexpected fashion moment, and her latest Met Gala look was no exception.

For fashion’s biggest night of 2024, tonight at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the “Demons” rapper wore a white gown—or, some might say, a maxi-length wet T-shirt—by Vetements. She paired the look with standout glam that included glittery painted teardrops falling from her smoky eye look, and flawless skin, and opted to wear her natural hair in a clean buzz cut.

doja cat

While some may have considered Doja Cat's carpet look as wildly off theme, there was a deeper reason she chose to wear the simple piece for the event.

Earlier in the evening, while leaving the Mark Hotel, the rapper posed alongside Vetements creative director Guram Gvasalia in nothing but a white towel across her body and atop her head, acrylic platform pumps, and diamond necklace.

doja cat towel look met gala

Ahead of tonight’s gala, Doja Cat was teasing a dramatic red-carpet moment for fans. The rapper was photographed around New York City with Gvasalia, sporting outfits including a carefully draped bed-comforter-esque gown and a Saran Wrap–inspired two-piece set. On Sunday night, at a pre–Met Gala party, she wore a pleather cape with nothing underneath but a thong and sheer tights.

In her cover story last year for Harper’s Bazaar Icons issue , the musician shared how experimenting with fashion is an extension of how she presents herself as an artist.

“I’m in this kind of chaotic place right now when it comes to fashion, where I’ve just been going into my closet and picking out the most random, weird, not-fitting thing to mix with another thing that does not really fit. It’s like mashed potatoes. But I’m embracing that,” she said. “It’s a little punk. It’s experimental for sure. It’s very manic. But I am going in a darker direction when it comes to visuals and fashion. I have a lot of pent-up feelings and anger, and I want to express it with beauty.”

Using AI to predict grade point average from college application essays

by PNAS Nexus

college

Jonah Berger and Olivier Toubia used natural language processing to understand what drives academic success. The authors analyzed over 20,000 college application essays from a large public university that attracts students from a range of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds and found that the semantic volume of the writing, or how much ground an application essay covered predicted college performance, as measured by grade point average.

They published their findings in PNAS Nexus .

Essays that covered more semantic ground predicted higher grades. Similarly, essays with smaller conceptual jumps between successive parts of its discourse predicted higher grades.

These trends held even when researchers controlled for factors including SAT score, parents' education, gender, ethnicity, college major, essay topics, and essay length. Some of these factors, such as parents' education and the student's SAT scores, encode information about family background , suggesting that the linguistic features of semantic volume and speed are not determined solely by socioeconomic status.

According to the authors, the results demonstrate that the topography of thought, or the way people express and organize their ideas, can provide insight into their likely future success.

How-To Geek

What is chatgpt and how does it work.

Demystifying the eerily human-like AI chatbot

Quick Links

Who created chatgpt, how does chatgpt work, how to use chatgpt, why is chatgpt important.

ChatGPT is far from the only AI chatbot on the block these days, but it might be the most well-known. In a short time, ChatGPT has evolved quite a bit. Here's where ChatGPT came from, who made it, and how it works.

ChatGPT was created by OpenAI. OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory that consists of OpenAI Inc, a non-profit, and Open AI Limited Partnership (OpenAI LP), a for-profit subsidiary.

OpenAI created GPT—the first version of what would eventually become ChatGPT—in 2018. GTP-2 and GPT-3 were released in subsequent years, followed by ChatGPT in 2022.

Beyond ChatGPT, OpenAI also created the image generator DALL-E and a video generator called Sora . The overall goal of OpenAI is to develop "friendly AI" that benefits humanity. The founders of OpenAI include Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Sam Altman, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, and Ilya Sutskever.

ChatGPT is an AI model that uses deep learning to generate human-like text based on prompts from users like you. It works by predicting the next word in a given text, based on the patterns it has learned from a massive amount of data during its training process.

The training process is where the "magic" happens. OpenAI feeds ChatGPT with a vast amount of text data. ChatGPT then uses that data to try to predict what the next word should be based on the examples it was given. OpenAI evaluates those predictions and makes adjustments. That process is repeated over and over again many times.

Eventually, ChatGPT reached a point where its predictions were good enough to generate human-like responses. However, it's important to know ChatGPT is not constantly training. ChatGPT is not up to date on current events. At the time of writing in May 2024, the dataset of ChatGPT 3.5 only goes up to January 2022, and the cut-off is December 2023 for ChatGPT 4.

Using ChatGPT is very straightforward. It really is as easy as having a text conversation with a friend. You'll first need to go to chat.openai.com in a web browser or open the app on your iPhone, iPad , or Android device . You can create an account or use it in a limited capacity without one .

Once you're in, type a prompt in the text box at the bottom of the screen. You can ask a question or give it a request, like "Write a short story about a dog named Clarence." Press the arrow icon to submit.

ChatGPT's response will appear in real-time as if it's a person typing. When it's done, you can hear it read aloud, copy to your clipboard, regenerate, or submit it as a bad response.

Each prompt starts a conversation thread. ChatGPT will remember what you're talking about, so you can enter follow-up prompts or change the subject entirely.

That's a brief overview of how easy it is to use. Check out our full walkthrough on using ChatGPT for some extra tips . Essentially, treat the conversation like you would with another person. No matter how confident ChatGPT sounds, it can very often be wrong.

The big question a lot of people have about ChatGPT is why does it matter? We've already seen the huge wave of AI image generators and heard everything from glowing praise to doom and gloom . How does ChatGPT fit into the narrative around AI?

It's safe to say AI chatbots like ChatGPT will have more of an impact on the average person than AI image generators. Major companies, including Microsoft and Google , are already integrating OpenAI's technologies ( Microsoft Copilot ) or working on their own competitors ( Google's Gemini .) That will have a very real effect on how you interact with the web.

We could be headed toward a world where you can simply ask AI for a recipe for pancakes, and it will create one for you, eliminating the need to visit a recipe blog. But that also comes with misinformation concerns. ChatGPT was trained on text from the internet—notorious for being untrustworthy. What happens when your search engine lies to you ?

In general, there are a lot of questions about ChatGPT that we simply don't have answers for yet. One thing seems clear at this point: ChatGPT is important, but how important is yet to be seen.

That's the down low on ChatGPT. It's an exciting new development in the world of technology and artificial intelligence. Chatbots are not a new idea, but ChatGPT will spur a much more advanced generation of virtual friends . At the moment, it's mostly fun to play around with , but it could have a much larger impact on our lives in the future.

What Does "GPT" Stand for in ChatGPT?

"GPT" stands for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer." A GPT is a language model that has been trained on a vast dataset of text to generate human-like text. The "Chat" part of "ChatGPT" refers to it being a chatbot.

Does ChatGPT Save Data?

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT does not save data from individual interactions for its own uses. Your input is processed to generate a response, and the data is not stored by OpenAI after the conversation is over. However, each conversation is stored inside your account so you can still find and share your past ChatGPT conversations.

How Long Will ChatGPT Be Free?

ChatGPT is free to use for anyone with an account on OpenAI's website or limited without an account. As of May 2024, there are no usage limits on the free version of ChatGPT. However, there is a "ChatGPT Plus" subscription plan for $20 per month. It includes reliable availability when demand is high, faster response speeds, and priority access to new features. OpenAI says it will continue to offer free access to ChatGPT.

When Was ChatGPT Released?

ChatGPT was released in November 2022 and had over one million users in just five days. It followed up OpenAI's original GPT from 2018, GPT-2 in 2019, GPT-3 in 2020, and GPT-4 in 2023.

Book Review: Memoirist Lilly Dancyger’s penetrating essays explore the power of female friendships

Who means more to you — your friends or your lovers? In a vivid, thoughtful and nuanced collection of essays, Lilly Dancyger explores the powerful role that female friendships played in her chaotic upbringing marked by her parents’ heroin use and her father’s untimely death when she was only 12.

“First Love: Essays on Friendship” begins with a beautiful paean to her cousin Sabina, who was raped and murdered at age 20 on her way home from a club. As little kids, their older relatives used to call them Snow White and Rose Red after the Grimm’s fairy tale, “two sisters who are not rivals or foils, but simply love each other.”

That simple, uncomplicated love would become the template for a series of subsequent relationships with girls and women that helped her survive her self-destructive adolescence and provided unconditional support as she scrambled to create a new identity as a “hypercompetent” writer, teacher and editor. “It’s true that I’ve never been satisfied with friendships that stay on the surface. That my friends are my family, my truest beloveds, each relationship a world of its own,” she writes in the title essay “First Love.”

The collection stands out not just for its elegant, unadorned writing but also for the way she effortlessly pivots between personal history and spot-on cultural criticism that both comments on and critiques the way that girls and women have been portrayed — and have portrayed themselves — in the media, including on online platforms like Tumblr and Instagram.

For instance, she examines the 1994 Peter Jackson film, “Heavenly Creatures,” based on the true story of two teenage girls who bludgeoned to death one of their mothers. And in the essay “Sad Girls,” about the suicide of a close friend, she analyzes the allure of self-destructive figures like Sylvia Plath and Janis Joplin to a certain type of teen, including herself, who wallows in sadness and wants to make sure “the world knew we were in pain.”

In the last essay, “On Murder Memoirs,” Dancyger considers the runaway popularity of true crime stories as she tries to explain her decision not to attend the trial of the man charged with killing her cousin — even though she was trained as a journalist and wrote a well-regarded book about her late father that relied on investigative reporting. “When I finally sat down to write about Sabina, the story that came out was not about murder at all,” she says. “It was a love story.”

Readers can be thankful that it did.

James Baldwin in 1979.

The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin audiobook review – from the civil rights frontline

Law & Order’s Jesse L Martin narrates two powerful essays examining the Black experience in the US, the first in a series marking the author’s centenary year

F irst published in 1963 at the height of the US civil rights movement, James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time comprises two astonishing essays examining the Black experience in the United States and the struggle against racial injustice.

The first, My Dungeon Shook, takes the form of a letter to Baldwin’s 14-year-old nephew, and outlines “the root of my dispute with my country … You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being. You were not expected to aspire to excellence: you were expected to make peace with mediocrity.”

The second, Down at the Cross, is a polemic examining the relationship between race and religion, and finds Baldwin reflecting on his Harlem childhood, his encounters with racist police, and a spiritual crisis at the age of 14, which, triggered by his fears of getting drawn into a life of crime, “helped to hurl me into the church”. There, he was filled with anguish “like one of those floods that devastate countries, tearing everything down, tearing children from their parents and lovers from each other”.

The essays are narrated by the Law & Order actor Jesse L Martin, who highlights the rhythmic nature of Baldwin’s prose, and channels his anger and devastation at the unceasing suffering of Black Americans. This audiobook is one of several new recordings of Baldwin’s writing being published over the next few months, to mark the influential author’s centenary year, which also include Go Tell It to the Mountain, Another Country, Giovanni’s Room and If Beale Street Could Talk.
