Visionary: A leader must have a clear and inspiring vision of the future, and be able to articulate this vision in a way that motivates others to work towards it.

Strategic thinking: A leader must be able to think critically and creatively to identify and solve problems, make decisions, and develop plans and strategies to achieve their goals.

Flexibility: A leader must be able to adapt to changing circumstances and be open to new ideas and perspectives. This requires the ability to embrace change, be innovative, and continuously learn and grow.

Integrity: A leader must have strong ethics and values, and be willing to make difficult decisions that are consistent with their beliefs. This requires honesty, transparency, and accountability.

Decisiveness: A leader must be able to make tough decisions quickly, without undue hesitation or procrastination. This requires courage and the ability to take calculated risks.

Empowerment: A leader must be able to delegate responsibilities, give team members the resources they need to succeed, and foster a sense of ownership and accountability among their team.

Conclusion

These qualities are essential for effective leadership, and when combined with hard work, determination, and a commitment to excellence, can help leaders to achieve great things.

How one can be a Great Leader?

Leadership is the act of performing the duties of a leader. In the business world, for instance, it is essential to have someone in charge of a team to ensure everything runs well. Effective leadership is essential for any group that wants to maximize its prospects of success.

Leadership Comes from Experience

As we've shown, leadership can be innate in some cases but is more often learned through practice and exposure. Sometimes the best traits of a leader must be learned over a lengthy period of time, so that one can become a notable one, proving that leadership is not always about a person's innate qualities. Leaders should continuously be on the lookout for opportunities to grow their leadership skills.

Nobody can disagree that experience is a key component of leadership. Numerous examples exist to back up this claim, such as:

Instance 1:

Our school's head boy or girl has traditionally been an older student who has been around for a while and thus has a better grasp of the ins and outs of school politics.

Instance 2:

When there is a vacancy for a team leader, it is common practice for the employee who has consistently put in the most effort and attention to the office job to receive a higher number of votes than their coworkers.

“The best teacher for a leader is evaluated experience.” - John C. Maxwell

How one can be a Great Leader/Skills to be a Great Leader?

Effective leadership is a skill that develops through time. Developing into a leader with all the qualities that are needed takes a lot of hard work and potential. Being a prominent leader calls for a wide variety of traits. Some of these characteristics are addressed in further detail below:

One should be a Good Communicator

To be an effective leader, one must be able to convey his thoughts clearly to his/her/its subordinates.

Should have Confidence

The individual should have faith in what he says and does.

Give Credit to other Team Members too

A leader not only needs to impose his viewpoints and opinions instead he must also hear to the suggestions of other members of the team and offer them credit if their concept is appropriate.

Good Bond with the Team

A leader's ability to command respect from his team members depends on his ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with them.

Leads with Responsibility

A leader needs to be completely committed to his position. It's important that he takes on responsibility so that he can effectively deal with the various challenges he will inevitably face.

Any group or organization needs a leader above all else. Leadership development takes time and effort. One needs to have lived through a lot to be an effective leader. It's not enough to simply have years of experience in the field; one must also have the traits that make one an effective leader. You can't be a great leader unless you possess certain traits.

What makes a Good Leader?

Trying one's hand as a leader appears easy when viewed through this lens. Is that so tough? Of course not; leading is difficult, and not everyone aspires to be a leader. The vast majority of us have settled into well-established careers where we report to superiors and make a living. Still, not everyone is content to go along with the crowd. They become leaders in whatever field they pursue. A leader is an example to followers and will prioritize the needs of those around them.

Some Unique Qualities of a Leader

Many individuals resort to their leaders to vent their frustrations, therefore it's important for them to be good listeners.

A leader ought to be completely forthright; they can't play favorites or give anyone preferential treatment. One of the most essential qualities of a strong leader is the ability to make decisions with integrity.

They need to be aware of the bigger picture and understand what makes an individual stand out or become a leader. It's their expertise in addition to other distinguishing traits. Their awareness of current events and the results of recent studies is essential. In many ways, this is helpful, and it's the leader's responsibility to stay current.

Since some might not understand them, they should utilize straightforward, easily comprehended language. Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively at all times. In reality, what sets them apart is their exceptional communication skills. Adolf Hitler was such a gifted orator that his followers believed every word he said.

No matter how you're feeling or what's going on in the world, if you listen to a leader, they may make you feel energized. Since leaders are in charge of inspiring confidence in their followers, they can't afford to be wary or unsure of themselves. People tend to blindly follow their leaders.

Whether you're a leader or a doctor, you should devote yourself completely to your chosen field. Everything we do is for the benefit of others; engineers, for example, spend much of their time designing and constructing buildings for other people. So, take pride in what you do, and if you possess the aforementioned traits, you are also a leader who doesn't have to rely on others to succeed. No matter what you do, aspiring to leadership positions will always benefit others.

Leadership and management are both vital to the efficient operation of an organization; but, they accomplish very different things in the process. Leadership is a necessary skill for anyone aspiring to be an effective manager. The terms management and leadership are synonymous with one another. In this manner, we are able to draw the conclusion that a manager who demonstrates the traits of a successful leader is, in fact, a manager who is effective.

Leadership in School

Leadership is essential in nearly every group, as we've seen above. That group includes one's educational institution. Every school needs an outstanding figure to serve as its head of school. Class monitor, assembly captain, cultural leader, etc. are all examples of leadership roles that can be taken on at school, but this raises the question of what makes a person a successful school leader.

Any student hoping to be chosen as a student body leader will need to demonstrate a wide range of competencies. He or she needs to be a consistent student who pays attention in class and does well in extracurricular activities. For the simple reason that no intelligent and hardworking kid would ever be considered for leadership. Student leaders are most often selected from among those who participate fully in all activities.

Leadership in Organization

Leadership in an organization, also known as organizational leadership, is the process of establishing long-term objectives that further the company's mission and help it reach its ultimate destination. This is a classic illustration of how Bill Gates often works with his team: they agree on a strategy, and Gates implements it. To the same extent, it is the responsibility of the leader in each given organization to determine what it is that the group is trying to accomplish.

Leadership in Politics

Leadership in politics, also known as political leadership, is the process of becoming actively involved in a political party in the role of a party leader. Knowledge of political processes, their outcomes, and the political agenda is central to the idea of political leadership.

An effective leader can be developed in anyone who has the determination and drives to do so. Both the strengths and the areas for improvement should be nurtured. Whether in the classroom, the workplace, or the political arena, leadership is always necessary. Therefore, one can exercise leadership anywhere they like inside their own organization.

What are the types of Leadership?

The ability to lead is a rare trait that not everyone possesses. The ability to do so is a gift, so count your blessings if you possess it. It's recommended that you hone it even more so that you can propel your career forward and serve as an example to people around you. However, it is crucial to grasp the various leadership styles before you go ahead and polish your skills.

Along with being experienced one should also hold qualities of being a good leader. It is impossible to handle leadership without having qualities of a good leader.

Essay on Leadership

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – Strength and Weakness of Leadership and Leadership in Management

Leadership is nothing but taking a charge over a group, team, or organization. Talking about the word ‘leadership’ brings different images to our brain. For example, a political leader, a team leader, a business leader, a school leader, etc. Leaders help their team or organization to work in a proper and systematic manner. Leadership is all about working and winning as a team. Leaders use their management skills to set direction so that they can lead their team towards the desired destination.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Leadership

  • Improved communication skills.
  • Personality development.
  • Self-awareness.
  • Ability to work with a team.
  • Develop confidence.

Weaknesses:

  • Being biased with the team members.
  • Lack of trust in the leader.
  • A hypocrite mentality.
  • Failing to meet the desired expectation.
  • Lack of principles.

Leadership and Management

Leadership and management are two interconnected words. Leadership is the act of setting directions to achieve a goal and management is the process of successfully administering the complexes of business operations. Leadership is nothing but a necessary part of effective management. We can also say that leadership and management are synonyms. For example, we see that a manager often has traits of a leader; it means he must be a good leader.

Leadership in School

As we have discussed above that leadership is required almost in each and every organization. School is also one of those organizations. There is a need for a prominent leader in each and every school. There are many leadership posts in school such as a class monitor, assembly captain, cultural leader, etc. but here the question arises, how one can be a prominent leader in his or her school, what are the qualities required?

A student who is interested in being elected as a school leader should have many qualities. He or she should be regular in class, should focus on the words of the teacher, as well as should also be good in co-curricular activities. Because a lazy and dumb student can never be a choice as a nominee for being a good leader. The student who is completely active in all of the aspects is mostly preferred as a good leader.

Leadership in Organization

Leadership in an organization or organizational leadership is an act of setting strategic goals that are for the sake of organization or for achieving a desired destination of the organization. We can see here a very common example, the CEO of any company [who here is the leader] often set strategies upon which he works along with his team to get the desired result. Similarly, in each and every organization the leader is supposed to set the goals which are to be achieved.

Leadership in Politics

Leadership in politics or political leadership is the process of getting indulged in any political party as a leader. Political leadership is a concept of understanding political processes, its outcome as well as political agenda. For example, now a day, our honorable prime minister, Mr. Narendra Modi has emerged as an efficient political leader. He handles the nation in a perfect as well as systematic manner.

It is not impossible for anyone to become an efficient leader if he or she has the strong will power and desire to be one. One should work upon both, developing the strengths as well as improving the weaknesses. Leadership is required everywhere either in school, office, or politics. So, one can choose their respective organization in which they are currently working to practice leadership.

Effective Leadership: Traits and Behaviors Essay

Effective leadership is usually associated with various traits and behaviors identified in a person. There are many theories on leadership suggesting different traits, but one of the most popular of them, The Five Practices model, identifies the following significant components: modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart (Caza & Posner, 2018). Thus, to model the way means to engage in the behavior a leader wants from their followers. Inspiring a shared vision stands for being future-oriented, emotionally engaging followers to achieve a clear vision that has been articulated beforehand. Then, challenging the process means that “leaders are more successful when they are able to embrace and promote change” (Caza & Posner, 2018, p. 127). Finally, enabling others to act means building followers’ competence and confidence, fostering collaborative relationships, and encouraging the heart means recognizing the socio-emotional needs of one’s followers. A person with all the traits described above can become an effective leader.

Identifying such a person, however, can be a challenging task. There is a vast number of leadership perspectives, and all of them provide a different viewpoint on what a true leader should look like (Mango, 2018). Furthermore, even a single theory may contain controversies or describe several separate approaches. Researchers have identified a leader prototype as an “abstract conception of the most representative member or most widely shared features of a given cognitive category” (as cited in Jiang et al., 2019, p. 674). Therefore, when hiring a leadership talent, one should establish what leadership traits they want to see in their future employee and conduct a practical evaluation of each candidate to analyze their potential to become an effective leader.

Essay on Leadership 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Leadership Essay in English, suitable for class 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. – Jack Welch

What is the one common thing between Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Bill Gates? They are all incomparable role models and have exhibited exceptional leadership. Leaders are people who listen, empower and help others. Leadership occurs when a person guides or leads other people to achieve something. Leaders walk alongside their people at every step.

Qualities of a Good Leader

A good leader is first an excellent communicator. He listens to others and gives constructive feedback. He is optimistic in all situations, no matter how tough and likes to stress on the solution, rather than the problem. He is self-aware and self-confident. He believes in himself and his team. He displays trust and faith. A leader is always eager to learn more and more. He acquires and gains knowledge whenever possible. He is a value adder and a positive contributor. He displays qualities of an excellent problem solver. A good leader shows never giving up attitude and always supports his team.

Types of Leadership Styles

Not all leaders are alike. They all possess different styles of leadership. Two main styles should be kept in mind.

  • Autocratic Leadership – In this style, the leader holds full control. He likes his orders to be followed without any questions asked. Others often dislike him.
  • Democratic Leadership – In this style, the leader takes the opinion of others and listens to them while making important decisions.

If you build leadership skills, people will look up to you. Not only will you be able to handle your problems, but you will also be able to get other people free from theirs. When you work, you will be able to motivate your employees better and keep your team’s performance on the track. People always like to associate themselves and work with those people that have a collaborative spirit and are dynamic.

How to Become a Good Leader?

We associate leadership with people who run a country or run a multinational business. But what we fail to see is that each one of us can start building a leader in ourselves. Very few are born leaders. There are ways through which we can ensure that we acquire leadership skills-:

  • Never be afraid to admit your mistakes. People may think that it is a sign of weakness, but that is not true. People appreciate a leader who is honest and truthful.
  • Always consider yourself as a team player. You can achieve more together than what you achieve individually.
  • Learn to give credit to people who deserve it. Praise and appreciate them.
  • Always guide and support others. Help them grow and develop.
  • Be collaborative and compassionate—lead people with love, dignity and respect.

Some Noteworthy Leaders

  • Jesus Christ is regarded as highly as a religious leader. More than two billion people followed Christianity because of his teachings.
  • Mother Teresa left her home when she was just 18 years old to help the poor, needy and dying. She dedicated her life as a selfless leader to them, and this inspired other people as well to take up a path that made the world a better place to live in.
  • Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam showed every trait of a good leader throughout his life. He was utmost humble. He always encouraged people to pursue their dreams. He can rightfully be called a visionary.
  • When we talk about leadership, how can one not mention Mahatma Gandhi? He defeated a superpower by taking the path of non-violence. His followers supported him because of his humility, determination and honesty.
  • A leader should always follow his passion and dreams. This is exactly what Walt Disney did. He created many characters, such as Mickey Mouse and spread his passion for art and fun throughout the world.

Indeed, your essay will significantly differ from one type to another: description essay will most likely have a structure that is slightly different from an argumentative one.

Leadership Essays

What you may have already encountered in your academic life is the work on a leadership essay. Although it sounds pretty complicated and vague, it is mostly possible to master an essay on leadership. Below is a guide for you to get an insight into this particular essay type.

What is a good leadership essay?

A good leadership essay is the one in which the essay writer has fully covered the topic of leadership and understood its core ideas. More specifically, to end up with a flawless leadership essay, you will need to indicate what makes a person a good leader. For achieving the latter, you will most likely need to conduct research and trace how a particular person reaches his or her goals. In other words, the task is to discover which actions the person undertakes, what their followers say about him or her, and how the person organizes the work. So, a leadership essay implies providing real-life success examples and further revealing them.

Above all, a good leadership essay is the one that follows a precise, clear, comprehensive structure. Structuring your essay about leadership in the most coherent way leads to a win-win situation: you have fewer troubles and barriers to writing a brilliant essay, and your teacher is able to comprehend the essay easily. This guide is what you will need to refer to to get an insight into how the flawless structure for a leadership essay looks like and how it will let you take a benefit.

How to write a Leadership essay?

To write a leadership essay that stands out, you first need to brainstorm all the ideas that you have and come up with a topic for your essay. If you are struggling with this step, you may think of some of the most influential people, read about them, and find out what makes them unique. Or, you can pick any topic which is mentioned at the end of this article. After you have chosen an issue, it is time to structure your essay appropriately.

how to write a leadership essay example

As you already know, an essay constitutes three essential sections: introduction, main body, and conclusion. Below is the more detailed description of each of the parts.

Introduction

Of course, your leadership essay introduction will always vary depending on the topic of the essay. However, you can always begin by stating your vision of leadership regardless of the topic. Additionally, to motivate the reader and instantly catch his or her attention, you may use a quote of a famous leader, or simply a quote which you find relevant to the topic. Be aware that you should avoid outlining the essence and the role of the leadership in your introduction; leave it for the body paragraphs.

What you may also do in your leadership essay is ask a question, which will most likely intrigue the leader. Or it will at least give your reader an overview of what you will dwell on  in your essay.

Body Paragraphs

You will need to divide the main body into 3-5 paragraphs to make the structure more comprehensive. What you have to do at this point  is  give your reader a sound understanding of your ideas. Therefore, try to fit each idea in a single body paragraph so that you do not confuse your reader. Do not hesitate to indicate your examples to strengthen your arguments. For instance, you may explain a fact that makes a particular person you are writing about a real leader.

Also, always stick to your thesis statement and don’t forget that the body paragraphs should reveal the parts of your thesis statement.

As you may already know, you need to restate your opinion and briefly summarize all the points from the main body in conclusion. For instance, if you wrote your essay on qualities of an effective leader, state the most fundamental qualities and indicate why they matter the most. Besides, try not to copy what you have already written in the body – it is better to restate your opinion using different words. And, of course, beware adding any new and extra information; indicate only those points that you have already outlined in the text. Finally, keep in mind that it is always favorable to keep your concluding remarks short.

Leadership Essay Examples

Writing a leadership essay requires some research and time. In case you feel the necessity to go through an essay example, below is a leadership essay sample you can refer to.

Is leadership an inborn or an acquired feature?

Is everyone capable of becoming a leader, or is this ability innate? A lot of researchers have been struggling to answer this question. One assumption about leadership implies that the leader is the person who possesses particular characteristics. Another assumption claims that leaders are capable of acquiring specific features over their life span. As the evidence shows, leaders own many features that distinguish them among others and make more and more people become their followers. These might be cognitive abilities, psychological traits, professional qualities, and a lot more, and all of them will be either acquired or innate. Based on the importance of leadership qualities, such as commitment, stress resistance, and the ability to make quality decisions, it is reasonable to claim that leaders are made, not born.

One can deem commitment as one of the top fundamental qualities of the leader. In essence, such a feature indicates that a person is passionate about the common goal, strives to be a team player, and makes every effort to reach a shared goal. As the history shows, none of the successful companies was uncoordinated by an influential, committed leader: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft – all of these companies are examples of dominant teams led by a dedicated leader. A committed leader also inspires his or her team to achieve common goals and put more effort into the shared activity. Besides, commitment is unlikely to be an innate feature; it instead comes with experience. This is so, since commitment implies dedicating oneself to the shared task, and one can reach it only via learning and continuous self-improvement.

Stress resistance is another incredibly important feature that every good leader should possess. This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. Thereby, he is in charge of researching the market, discovering all the hidden truths, and analyzing the organization’s potential and capabilities to result in the most effective decision. As it flows logically from the latter, an ability to make sound quality decisions is purely a professional quality. This leads to the conclusion that one has to work hard to become a genuine leader and master the skill of making effective decisions.

Overall, the leader may possess a multitude of different skills and master them perfectly. However, what has so far become transparent is that any leader, regardless of which team he leads, must possess three essential qualities. These qualities are commitment to the common goal, ability to handle and resist stress, and, finally, an ability to make effective decisions. All of the three qualities are most likely to be acquired over a lifetime. The statement below leads to the conclusion that even though some qualities can be innate, most are not the ones that leaders are born with. Hence, this answers an essential question: leadership feature is acquired, and not necessarily inborn.

How to write an essay about leadership

Leadership essays, or essays where you are asked about your work as a leader in your school or community, are not as common as you might imagine. Given all of the emphasis schools and clubs put on leadership roles and titles, essays asking students to dive deeply into this work are actually pretty rare in college applications. That said, it is important to consider leadership very broadly! You do not need to be the President or Founder of a club to write an effective essay for one of these prompts. In fact, sometimes the less common considerations and definitions of “leadership” can make for more compelling essays.

Example Leadership Essay Questions:

  • U of California: Describe an example of your leadership and a way that you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
  • U of Texas: How do you show leadership in your life? How do you see yourself being a leader at UT Austin?

LET'S BREAK DOWN THE ESSENTIAL POINTS YOU NEED TO HIT WHEN RESPONDING TO THIS SUPPLEMENT:

Leadership is more than titles – it is important, when you consider questions like these, that you reflect on activities where you have contributed to an accomplishment and learned something (about yourself, about your community). In fact, it would be a more powerful essay to reflect on a leadership contribution that was not connected to a title of leadership, but where you learned something important, than to reflect upon your activity where your leadership title is big “in name only.”

Sometimes leadership happens within your family – you do not need to limit your focus to leadership that happens during your school day.

You can consider this essay happening in two distinct ways: narrative structure – where you present a challenge you faced in a leadership role, actions you did that had an impact, and lessons you learned (skills you gained); OR montage structure – where you take on two different activities that both taught you a common lesson about leadership. Don’t muddle these together! Decide whether you want to write linearly (and chronologically in time) about one activity or if you want to write non-linearly about one leadership lesson.

THINGS TO AVOID:

Try to stay away from topics where your leadership takes the reader on a familiar journey. If you want to write about your leadership on an athletic team, that is wonderful, but try to avoid an essay about how your leadership of your team during The Big Game contributed to (winning/losing) The Big Game and the team becoming closer and being “one-strong-team.” Does that feel familiar to you? That’s because college admissions folks will have read thousands of essays that tell this type of story. If you select a common team to lead, take your essay in an uncommon direction.

Avoid lengthy introductions that take away from your word count and don’t actually support your essay response.

Avoid overemphasis on one aspect that detracts from your ability to talk about the other aspects of your story. In other words, if you spend half of your words outlining the challenge you faced, you only have ¼ of the remaining words to discuss your actions and ¼ to discuss the lessons you learned. This is not a good balance!

ADDITIONAL TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • What did you do?
  • What problems did you solve?
  • What lessons did you learn?
  • What impact did you have?
  • How have you applied these lessons?

Answering these questions (and in this order) actually builds you an outline for this essay!

Do you have an extracurricular activity where the character count really limits you in terms of describing your work and impact? Consider using this essay to further highlight your contributions!

Do you have an extracurricular activity that speaks directly toward your intended major or field of study? This might be a great time to make your application stand out by sharing your leadership and contributions to this field! What problems have you solved? How can you use this prompt to share these solutions?

A leadership essay is a paper that analyzes leadership concepts and their application to real-life situations that may involve everyday business management, crisis situations, and other scenarios.

Every essay on leadership is about defining a concept. Then, it’s either comparing it to similar management tools or proving that it’s useful (or not).

While some students enjoy writing such papers, other learners hate them. The below samples will come in handy, no matter which group is yours.

What Does Leadership Mean to You? (Essay Sample)

It is one of the most popular topics for a leadership essay. If you need to write a paper like that, ask yourself:

  • Who is a good leader?
  • What style do they use?
  • What are the situations when they might switch styles?

You may take a more personal approach to such an essay if your professor allows you to. In the example below, you will see the academic approach to this topic. It analyzes three leadership styles to discover which one corresponds to the meaning of leadership if one thinks of it as guidance and support.

Why I Want to Participate in a Leadership Program (Essay Sample)

It’s another example of a popular topic. Such papers often have a meaning beyond the classroom since they may decide whether you plan to participate in a specific program. It’s critical to make them as effective and compelling as possible.

A personalized approach is the best when it comes to essays like this. In the example below, you will see the paper that relies on individual beliefs and a personal life story to explain why it’s so important for the specific student to participate in the chosen program.

How to Write a Leadership Essay

Like every other essay, this paper has an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion summarizing your thoughts. (1) The most important part of the introduction is the final sentence,  aka  a thesis statement. That’s where you state your claim to prove or develop in your leadership essay.

Each body paragraph should correspond to the purpose of your essay. To ensure you don’t stray from the aim you’ve established in the thesis statement, write the topic sentences for all your paragraphs in the outline . In simple words, write the first sentence of every paragraph to define its development in advance and see if you cover everything you need.

And now, to the conclusion:

Its most essential element is thesis restatement or the first sentence of that paragraph. It’s not just paraphrasing your thesis; it’s also considering the new information you’ve discovered while writing the essay.

leadership-essay-structure

Structure :

  • Introduction (End it with a thesis statement.)
  • Body paragraphs (Each one starts with a topic sentence.)
  • Conclusion (Start it with a thesis restatement.)

Understand the purpose of a leadership essay

When starting to write, think about why you’re creating this paper. Before you sit down and type the words, think about the ideas you want to convey and their meaning in your life:

Can this essay teach you to take responsibility? Or maybe will it help you understand how to be a leader in crisis situations? When you’ve answered the “why” question, begin outlining.

Build a strong thesis

Always start with your thesis statement. It will help incorporate your answer to that notorious “why” question into your essay. Once done, you can plan out the rest of the paper and start working on the body paragraphs as soon as you finish the introduction.

There’s another important tip —don’t rush into writing the conclusion before you finish everything else!

It might seem like a good idea to create a thesis statement and thesis restatement right off the bat. However, you’ll find yourself with more refreshing ideas after completing all the research and thinking necessary for the introduction and each body paragraph.

Decide on a structure; format accordingly

Even if your essay about leadership seems not so formal, and you can use personal pronouns, you still need a clear structure.

The best way to write any academic paper is to keep your introduction and conclusion as short as possible. (But no shorter than three sentences and four lines of text).

Another important tip is to try making all your body paragraphs equal in length. That way, you’ll give the same attention to all the vital points of your essay.

Ready to Write Your Essay on Leadership Now?

Hopefully, this article has helped you understand the most critical elements of a leadership essay.

Remember the structure, grammar, and appropriate academic style to create a top-level paper. Please don’t forget to answer the “why” question and remember  why  you’re writing. Then you’ll impress everyone with your results!

Feature image of Short Essay on Leadership

Short Essay on Leadership in 100 Words

The term leadership denotes the capability of someone to lead his team. Leadership is a work of skill, responsibility, and power, and only the strong and determinant is capable of giving an able shoulder. Leadership is the potent behind the development of civilization. His confidence, as well as care for others, is what is necessary for him.

We are aware of eminent leaders like Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji, Jawaharlal Nehru, M. S. Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, who have been great proofs of honesty and integrity. Also, a leader is a communicator who can realize the issue of his people and act likewise. A person becomes a lead when he turns out to be the guardian of his people.

Short Essay on Leadership in 200 Words

Being a leader is never an easy task. It involves the dependency and faith of the people he is supposed to guide and lead. Also, a true leader is marked by certain virtues that make him the perfect elected among his people. It is very important to have a leader who can guide everyone through all perils and help them reach a safe spot. From a classroom to a company, to a country, everywhere we observe such an able hand who cares and shows the correct way without any biased opinion.

A leader is simply not someone with the power to rule over everyone. A tyrant like Hitler is never excepted who will torture his fellow beings. Also, a leader is not someone who is lazy and pleases all without taking any strong steps towards the problem creators. Hence leadership is the strength to stand morally firm and upright and be the shelter for all.

He must be an inspirational figure for all. A leader is the centre of integrity and confidence who encourage everyone to participate in teamwork. Eminent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji, Mother Teresa, Indira Gandhi, Sourav Ganguly, M. S. Dhoni have been great sources of strength and inspiration. Their deeds have made them immortal to people. Hence they are the ideal representation of leadership.

Short Essay on Leadership in 400 Words

Leadership is the essence of any movement that brings complete success for any team. A great leader is like the wind for a sail that steers the vessel towards the correct path. A leader means a person who is in charge of everything. So the term leadership is the way by which a leader guides the team. In different fields of life, be it in school, a business company, or the nation, a leader is present everywhere.

He must have virtues that will make him unique and easily supportable. A leader must have the faith of his fellow beings so that he can be the best choice. This faith and support will enable him to achieve success.

The qualities of efficient leadership are quite prominent. A leader must be honest about his work and organization. He must never hide any problem that might hamper the balance of his team. Also, he should not indulge in unfair means that can destroy his position and reputation among people. A leader must show confidence, integrity, and strength. He should bear an affirmative attitude so that others are inspired by him to work harder. If a leader gets negatively vibed, then no one will feel the urge to carry on their mission.

Leadership is not an easy task. He has to go through many trials and tribunals and then only can prove himself the ideal guide for all. Oftentimes, even the greatest leader can experience mental imbalances due to the extreme pressure he experiences daily on his way of leadership. It is then the responsibility of his teammates to support him and cheer him up with positive energy. Leadership is not the sole responsibility of one man or woman but a combined effort of the team that will eventually fetch the desired success.

Leadership is important for the overall development of personality. A person morally and physically weak cannot be an ideal leader. This ability to lead a team regulates, coordinates, and constructs the group according to some strong principles and ethics, that affects the performance of the group. Wonderful teamwork is the effort of the overall company under the guidance of an able leader.

He is the pivot of everything. Our country is rich in eminent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji, Surya Sen, Mother Teresa, Sarojini Naidu, Sourav Ganguly, and others who have shown the way to ht e future generations. In them lies the ideal representation of leadership.

I have adopted a pretty simplistic approach to writing these essays above. Hopefully, after going through this session, you will be able to write such essays on your own. Writing a Powerful Leadership/Achievement Essay [Sample Essay]

Writing a Powerful Leadership/Achievement Essay

Essays that ask you to write about significant achievements fall under the category of

what are known as behavioral or experiential questions . The basic assumption behind these questions is that past behavior is a great predictor of future behavior . They are all varieties on the theme of “Tell us about a time when you…” These questions are meant to take the measure of your managerial potential.

Let’s look at how one candidate effectively addressed this essay question from  Stanford GSB  (*this question is not from the current application):

Tell us about a time when you made a lasting impact on your organization.

This writer avoids writing about leadership in any generic way and zeroes in on the specific aspects of his contributions and their impact:

Leadership essay example: The Change Agent

When I was invited to become the Vice President and General Manager at Third Way Associates (TWA)* two years ago, the company was in financial and administrative disorder. Employee retention was poor, and TWA took too long to pay vendors because of poor communication and accounting processes. Cash flow was managed based on immediate needs rather than by the logic of budgets planned by project and city. Sloppy expense reports that were turned in with no receipts were reimbursed to employees.

TWA founders Scott W ____ and Glenn L ____ had good intentions, but spent most of their time selling sponsorships and getting new clients rather than directing and managing the company. As we begin 20XX, TWA is much healthier in every way. Under my direction, vendors are paid in an average of 20 days from date of invoice, instead of 60 days or more. Our cash flow is better administered since I introduced very specific detailed area budgets with over 125 budget lines per city. Because I can give the company founders much better stability and macromanagement vision, the three of us are able to look more to the future rather than simply put out fires.

Despite the difficult economy in 20XX, we not only retained our same clients but also signed several new client agreements for three years or more, including a two-year contract with Big Shoe Company worth $1.3 million. I’ve brought fresh accounts and industries into TWA, including ____ Airlines and Drink Y, among others. Combined, these accounts generated more than $500,000 in 20XX, and we estimate close to $1 million dollars in the following year.

Since my arrival, we have a much wider and broader sales menu which has been crucial to generate more revenue. I’ve expanded our most popular sports events to 25 cities, giving our clients new investment opportunities. These events range from recreational soccer clinic tours to professional soccer games broadcast on TV.

I also expanded our field staff, and at present we have 25 strong and reliable managers who report directly to me from each city. Despite the economy, 20XX was not a bad year for TWA, and this year promises to be even better if we continue our current strategy and continue to work as a team.

Leadership essay analysis

In every paragraph, this writer mentions concrete measures he took to introduce order to a chaotic company that was trying to grow. From instituting budgets with line items, an improved accounts payable system, and recruiting additional big-name accounts, the writer proves how his efforts strengthened the organization.

How can you maximize on your thought leadership experiences?

As you choose among your own experiences as essay material, think about these questions to help you frame answers of substance:

  • What was the obstacle, challenge, or problem that you solved in this accomplishment? A tight client deadline? A complex merger transaction? A new product launch amidst fierce competition?
  • What did you do to rise to the challenge you are writing about? Motivate your team to work overtime? Sell senior management on the deal’s long-term upside? Identify a marketing profile for your product that no competitor can match?
  • What facts demonstrate that your intervention created a happy ending? Did your team submit the project deliverables three days early despite being 20% understaffed? Your client approved the $500 million merger, the largest ever in its industry? Your new product has 20% market share after only one year? What was the impact of your leadership?

Don’t forget about your people leadership skills

What we’ve spoken about until this point revolves mostly on skilled problem-solving, or “thought leadership.” But respected businesspeople need to be equally or even more talented at something we didn’t have a formal name for: people leadership. By effectively leading the thinking of client firms’ problems as well as motivating them to work long hours to develop solutions to these problems and collaborate with clients on implementing them, these businesspeople prove to have what it takes to be exemplary leaders.

So don’t forget to include strong elements of people leadership in your essays. Here are several to keep in mind:

  • Rallying others around a vision. Did you convince your team or group to follow a specific path/solution? How did you do it? Successful clients have talked about handling dissenting opinions diplomatically or presenting their teams’ detailed quantitative evidence for a recommendation. The more you can show that you understood your audience and tailored the content and form of your message to them, the better.
  • Harnessing others’ strengths – and expanding them. Did you provide team members tasks they could handle comfortably based on their capabilities, as well as opportunities to broaden their skills? For example, you may have handed your quant jock teammate the most complicated operations analysis as well as responsibility for leading a key client meeting. In this way, you leverage teammates’ strengths while helping them develop new ones.
  • Getting through tough times. Did you model for your team enviable cool in pressure-cooker situations, maybe helping them keep the big-picture goal in mind or lightening the mood with humor? Did you reward teammates with praise, pizza, or both for working long into the night? Did you pitch in on others’ responsibilities as deadlines loomed? Helping your team handle stress while managing your own is a cornerstone of strong leadership.

Use your words

Another tip: Look for opportunities to incorporate strong verbs that illustrate your strengths in these areas. Good examples of leadership might incorporate several of the following:

  • Establishing a goal or vision
  • Obtaining buy-in
  • Taking responsibility

The old adage, “Show, don’t tell,” remains a classic bit of wisdom in the writing process. Make that a guiding principle not only in your leadership/achievement essays, but throughout your application.

Essay on “Leadership” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Leadership

POINTS TO DEVELOP

  • Leadership common in all social animals.
  • A leader essential for the smooth functioning of any society.
  • Qualities of a leader.
  • Power associated with leadership and the ills of this combination.
  • Conclusion: leaders are important to a group, a society, a nation.

Leadership     is a quality common to all social animals. A pride of lions is led by one dominant male, a herd of elephants too has a leader, migratory birds show social behavior and are led by a dominant individual, and all human societies, groups and communities have their respective leaders. Invariably, every congregation of human beings, be it at the micro level of religious or other groups and communities, or at the macro level of societies and nations, is bound to be headed by someone who stands out above the others and acts as a guide or a leader. Why is a leader necessary? What makes a leader a leader?

Looking at any sort of animal society one factor becomes immediately clear, namely division of labor. It is essential for the proper functioning of any society that work be clearly defined and assigned to different individuals, or groups of individuals, within the society. In a primitive society, the areas of work may just be food gathering, rearing young ones and defending the colony or society against intruders and predators. A more complex society, any human society for example, will have highly evolved and differentiated areas of work. In both cases, nevertheless, an individual would be required to supervise activities in each specialized area of work. These individuals, in turn, may be superseded by another individual who would coordinate and supervise their work. A leader is thus essential for smooth and proper functioning of any society animal or human, primitive or highly evolved.

What are the qualities which go on to constitute a leader? Going by the prime responsibility of a leader which is to ensure that the society or group functions effectively and in a healthy manner, a leader must be socially aware and conscious. Other qualities generally considered essential for a leader include a magnetic personality, highly developed communication skills, courage, physical fitness. acumen of mind, pragmatism, tolerance and care for others. A leader must be capable of envisioning the future reality of his or her society and be able to effectively and convincingly communicate it to ‘the people. A leader should be totally committed to the cause and should be prepared to go to all extents of self-sacrifice for the betterment of the society and the realization of his or her ideals. Leadership may at times also demand of the leader that he or she be extremely well-versed in certain specific areas depending upon the needs of the particular group or society.

How does one become a leader? In monarchies and similar authoritarian societies leaders acquire their prerogative to lead and rule by birth. The eldest son (or daughter) in a monarch’s family automatically inherits the position of the leader (monarch) under certain conditions. These conditions could be the demise of the monarch or his incapability to rule and govern. But monarchies and authoritarian societies are on the decline with more and more societies and nations opting for democracy. Under a democratic set-up, leadership normally is not reduced to a hereditary right of a particular family. The whole process of selection of a leader itself becomes a democratic procedure. Such a choice has the advantage of ensuring that only a person with genuine capabilities and qualifications Would emerge as a leader. In yet another kind of situation, leaders could be nominated or assigned by a former leader. This process is probably most evident in religious groups or sects where a departing leader normally nominates his or her successor. People wielding considerable power, often military power, are commonly known to topple governments and carry out coups to establish themselves as leaders. Many republics and nations in recent history have witnessed successful or unsuccessful coups. The democratic set-up, being by far the most popular and the commonest, has evolved specialized institutions to impart training to prospective leaders. In other words, people are now being trained to become leaders. It is not necessary to mention that certain basic abilities or qualifications are prerequisites to such selections. Since leadership is becoming a highly evolved field relying not just on basic inherent qualities but also on vast and specialized knowledge, it is but natural that chosen persons should be trained and educated to emerge as successful leaders.

One major attraction of leadership is the immense power the position incorporates. It is unfortunate that many people motivated solely by their greed for power aspire to become leaders and often become so too; they cause damage to the social fabric through their selfish preoccupations. Nepotism in bureaucratic and private sectors is a clear-cut example of misuse of power. Another important precondition for a leader, therefore, is that the leader should not allow power to corrupt him or her. A leader’s prime motivation to lead should stem from his or her dedication to the cause of the particular group, society or nation and not from his or her greed for power.

A leader is necessary for a group, society or nation. Without a capable leader a society generally tends to degenerate, fall victim to decadence and finally disintegrate. Good leaders are immensely popular, enjoy massive support and often leave an indelible impression on a nation’s character besides providing standards of excellence and dedication.

Leadership Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

Some people are known to be born leaders. The quality runs in their family; it is in their genes. Others are inspired by such people and work upon embedding this quality. Some fail at achieving it others are successful in attaining it through continual efforts. While leadership is a powerful quality, leaders possess various other qualities in addition to it that make for their popularity.

Qualities of a Good Leader

Here are the five main qualities of a good leader:

Honesty is one of the main qualities of a leader. A leader leads by example. So, if you want your team to look up to you, have faith in your ideologies and follow fair means in the tasks you assign them, it is imperative for you to be honest yourself. A deceitful person may attract people by way of manipulation; however, he will soon lose his credibility.

  • Communication

A leader does not think of himself as superior to you and thus does not believe in maintaining a distance. He rather ensures a flow of two-way communication to share ideas, discuss issues and maintain a cordial relation.

  • Self-Confidence

The level of self-confidence leaders possess is impeccable. They are sure about themselves and know exactly how to put their point across to inspire their audience. Good leaders also have confidence in their team.

  • Transparency

Good leaders do not hide facts or plays games. They maintain transparency while dealing in both personal and professional relationships. This is one of their traits for which they are highly trusted and respected.

A person who is impatient loses temper frequently and can never qualify to be a good leader. Possessing patience is one of the main keys to becoming a good leader. Only if a person is patient can he understand the mistakes of others and help them evolve.

A good leader has the ability to inspire others and instil leadership qualities in his subordinates to generate future leaders.

Leadership Essay 3 (400 words)

Good leadership springs from a bunch of several qualities including confidence, honesty, commitment, integrity, patience, transparency, creativity, positive outlook, open-mindedness, the ability to delegate responsibility and the ability to communicate effectively. While leaders are often looked at as an inspiration for others, being one has its own set of pros and cons.

Pros of Being a Leader

Let us begin by looking at the pros of being a leader:

People look up to you as an inspiration. You are a source of guidance for them and they may come to you to seek suggestions on different issues. They develop a sense of respect for you.

  • Increases Self-Awareness

You try to analyze your positive and negative aspects in an attempt to improve as there are several people who look up to you. This increases self-awareness.

  • Broadens Your Mind

A good leader tries to understand the strengths and weaknesses of people in his team as well as their situation in order to bring out the best in them. This does not only help the people around him but also helps in broadening his own mindset.

  • Decision Making Skills

As a leader, you require taking decisions not only for yourself but also for your team. Your decision making skills thus enhance over a period of time.

  • Nurture Dreams

As a leader you guide those who look up to you and thus help nurture their dreams. Good leadership can also lead to the success of a business/firm.

Downside of Being a Leader

Mentioned below is the downside of being a leader:

  • Accountability

Since you are the leader, you are responsible for the acts of your team members. You are accountable for all their actions.

No matter how close you are to your team and how much you encourage two-way communication, those who look up to you often make you sit on a pedestal and this can lead to a sense of isolation.

  • Dealing with All Kinds of People

As a leader, you may have to deal with both good and bad people. They might challenge your patience and this can be quite frustrating at times. The key is to stay calm.

If you possess leadership qualities, you may take up the role of a leader. While you should be comfortable handling this position if you have the required qualities; however, beware about the downside of the same before you take your final decision.

Leadership Essay 4 (500 words)

Like various other qualities, leadership may also be gifted by birth. At times, we are so caught up by the influence of others (mostly parents and teachers) – how they want us to be or how they would react to our decision that we forget our true selves and begin to act in the manner they have taught/ expect us to. If you feel that you have it in you to be a good leader but are doubtful about the same then the following should help you gain clarity.

Seven Signs You Possess Leadership Qualities

  • You Can Empathize

One of the chief qualities of a good leader is that he can empathize with the people around. So, you possess leadership qualities if you have it in you to understand the issues of those around and help them solve the same by using different ideas. If your ideas and approach prove to be effective more often than not then you undoubtedly qualify in this aspect.

  • Effective Communication is Your Forte

Another key feature of a good leader is the ability to talk efficiently. A good leader knows when to intervene and communicate and how to put across his point efficiently. You are a good leader if you have these qualities and also have the nerve to listen to the others so as to maintain a two-way communication.

  • You Exude Self-Confidence

Self-confidence is something that not everyone possesses. If you are confident about yourself and are well aware about the thin line that distinguishes confidence from over-confidence then you have one of the main qualities of a leader.

  • You are Approachable

A good leader is aware about his qualities and yet does not wear an air of superiority. He is a people’s person and is easy to approach.

  • You Possess Analytical and Problem Solving Skills

You have a good sense of wrong and right and do not jump to conclusions. In any given situation, you try to look at the pros and cons by analyzing the things thoroughly and then take a decision. Leadership Essay 5 (600 words)

Leadership is a unique quality that not everyone can possess. If you have it in you then consider yourself lucky. It is suggested to hone it further in order to take your career in the right direction and also to be an inspiration for those around you. However, before you go ahead and hone your skills, it is imperative to understand the different types of leadership styles.

Types of Leadership Styles

  • Democratic Leadership

The subordinates are a part of the decision-making process in this type of leadership. This kind of leadership focuses on the contributions of the subordinates; however, the final accountability of their decisions and actions is that of the leader. This is considered to be one of the most preferred leadership styles.

  • Transformational Leadership

This type of leadership is about inculcating change in oneself, group members, organization as well as other factors impacting the performance to enhance the same. A transformational leader inspires others by setting higher goals and motivating them to increase productivity.

  • Team Leadership

A team leader involves his team wholly in the project at hand. The leader inspires his team to work hard and together they work to achieve the set goals and evolve the members professionally.

  • Strategic Leadership

It involves a leader who is basically the head of a firm but one who does not only shares ideas with the top management. He is involved with the entire team at all the levels. He is known to bridge the gap between the requirement for new possibilities and the need for realism.

  • Autocratic Leadership

This type of leadership style focuses on the boss. Here, the leader holds all the authority. He takes decisions solely at his discretion without consulting his team. He communicates the same to his team and expects immediate implementation. He is also the one who is held responsible for his decisions. There is no flexibility here. This kind of leadership has often been criticized.

  • Visionary Leadership

This type of leader recognizes the talent and need of his team members. He sets forth a vision of success and the collective efforts required to achieve the desired results.

  • Coaching Leadership

A coaching leader constantly guides and supervises his team members to enhance performance. He motivates his team members and encourages them to work harder. This style of leadership has received immense appreciation.

  • Facilitative Leadership

A facilitative leader helps his team members run the process efficiently by giving them directions from time to time. This is in case his team is low functioning. In case, it is a high functioning team then this leader employs a light handed approach.

  • Cross-Cultural Leadership

This type of leadership exists when one is to deal with people from different cultural backgrounds. Many leaders working in different organizations in the United States are cross-cultural because people from different cultures are employed there.

  • Laissez-Faire Leadership

In this type of leadership, the team members are given authority. They are given the opportunity to work at their discretion with almost no interference from the leader. It is not considered to be an effective leadership style.

  • Transactional Leadership

This type of leadership includes an exchange process. The team members here are awarded prompt tangible rewards for implementing the leader’s ideas and decisions correctly.

  • Charismatic Leadership

This kind of leader invests time to transform his followers’ believes, values and behaviour to bring out the best in them.

If you believed that the leadership quality cannot be bifurcated further then the information shared here should help break the myth. It should also help you identify your unique leadership style so you can hone it further to master it.

essay on leadership for class 10

How to Write the UC Essay on Leadership Experience

This article was written based on the information and opinions presented by Vinay Bhaskara in a CollegeVine Livestream. You can watch the full Livestream for more info.

What’s Covered:

What exactly is leadership, consider different types of leadership, mistakes to avoid.

The first of the University of California’s essay prompts states:

Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

This prompt is all about conveying your leadership experience. However, keep in mind that your essay does not need to be limited to an example of school-based leadership. Many of the better versions of this essay convey leadership in ways that are about neither academic leadership nor direct or positional extracurricular leadership.

It’s really easy to get lost in a definition of what leadership means with this prompt. Remember that leadership has a very expansive definition. What leadership looks like to each student will vary drastically, but, in other words, the prompt is asking you to describe how you have utilized your personal experience for the betterment of yourself and others.

This prompt focuses on concrete actions that create tangible benefits for members of an organization, or even for an individual within the organization. Many students focus on how they have inspired their classmates or helped to resolve a conflict. While these are good examples of being a leader, try not to limit yourself to formal leadership positions and actions when brainstorming your response.

Leadership can range from formal leadership positions, such as being president of a club, to informal positions, such as mentoring a younger peer. Some examples of more formal leadership would be leadership positions in extracurricular activities including athletics , academics, and even work with non-profit organizations. Informal leadership, on the other hand, is leading in any capacity that is out of the ordinary, specifically when you do not have an official title. These are events or instances that you may not think of as leadership, but discussing such examples may actually help your essay stand out even more.

A really powerful example of this could be a student helping peers deal with and overcome mental health struggles. Another example could be a student taking on more responsibility within their family by helping a sibling with their homework. The most compelling essays tend to be about informal examples of leadership, which are then supplemented by the formal leadership positions on your resume .

Though there is no right or wrong answer for this essay prompt, here are a few things that you should avoid in your response.

Cliche Responses

A cliche essay response is any topic that reviewers may see repeatedly, and therefore is something you want to try and avoid in order to stand out among the applicant pool. Cliche responses for this essay prompt generally include examples about a club, such as a sports team, orchestra, or group, failing at something initially, and then the student helping the group succeed. It is possible to tackle such topics if you are an incredible writer, but if you aren’t then it may be hard for your essay to really make a lasting impact.

Restating Your Resume

Always avoid using the leadership experience prompt to restate your resume! It often seems that the most direct way to complete this essay is to speak about the leadership that can be found in your Activities section. Remember, however, that colleges already can see what’s on your resume. Therefore if you’re only expanding on the information in your application and using your essay to further list the clubs you led or your accomplishments, you’re not conveying anything new. You are missing an opportunity to add additional context to your application by doing this.

What the schools are really looking for are the qualities of leadership demonstrated through your experience – not the accomplishments or awards that you’ve accumulated from leadership positions. Instead of focusing on a title, focus on the impact of your leadership on others or on the approach used to build personal dynamics and relationships in leadership. Remember you want your essay to show which of your concrete actions have driven tangible benefits for others.

Here’s How Ivy League Schools Evaluate Student GPAs

A stellar GPA is one of the building blocks of a successful Ivy League application, and as the school year winds down, many students are anxiously seeking to give theirs a final boost. While most students and families understand the importance of a 4.0, few are aware of how top colleges evaluate student GPAs or what they look for when reviewing student transcripts. Though your GPA may seem to be a simple metric, nothing could be further from the case—colleges consider more than just the number, accounting for complexities such as diverse grading systems across schools, trends in grade inflation, and level of course rigor.

Here are three important facts to keep in mind about your GPA as you choose your courses:

1. Your GPA doesn’t directly compare to that of students at other schools.

One common misconception among college applicants is that they can compare their GPAs with those of students attending different schools. However, the GPA is not a universal metric but rather a reflection of an individual's academic performance within their specific educational environment. As a result, comparing GPAs from different schools is like comparing apples and oranges. For instance, some schools offer a plethora of AP, IB, and honors courses, while others may have limited options or offer none at all. Additionally, the weight assigned to AP versus honors versus regular classes varies from school to school. So, your GPA may not hold the same weight as those of your peers at different schools, even if you all have 4.0s.

Admissions officers understand that schools vary in their rigor, curriculum, and grading policies. Therefore, they evaluate your GPA in the context of your high school, considering the courses offered and the academic challenges presented. Instead of fixating on how your GPA compares to your friends’ from other schools, focus on challenging yourself and taking advantage of all the opportunities available to you at your school.

2. GPAs across the country are inflated—and colleges know it.

The last few years have seen surges in high school student GPAs nationwide. While GPA inflation has been on the rise over the last decade, average ACT composite scores are steadily declining. “For the 1.4 million ACT test-takers in the high school class of 2023, the average composite score on the exam was 19.5 out of 36, the lowest score since 1991,” according to The New York Times . The parallel differences, coupled with academic differences across schools, suggest that GPA must be considered in tandem with multiple other factors. Simply put, an A no longer means what it used to on a transcript.

WWE Raw Results, Winners And Grades On May 13, 2024

The risk of losing big on gamestop and other meme stocks, netflix sets ‘that ‘90s show’ part 2 and 3 premiere dates.

Ivy League and other top colleges are well aware of this trend and evaluate student GPAs alongside other metrics such as standardized test scores and AP exam scores in order to better understand a student’s academic skill sets. While some Ivy League and other top schools remain test-optional , they still place emphasis on course rigor and the context offered by your high school profile in order to understand the grades on your transcript.

3. Colleges will recalculate your GPA.

Given the abundance of variables in GPA calculations, colleges often recalculate the metric to create a standardized baseline for comparison between students across different schools. The recalibration may involve adjusting for variations in grading scales or the weighting of honors, International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The University of California system, for example, calculates students’ UC GPAs by converting grades to grade points (an A is equivalent to 4 points, a B to three points, etc.) for classes taken between summer after 9th and summer after 11th grade, and adding one point for each honors class, and dividing by total classes taken to yield final GPA.*

Other colleges also take additional factors that impact academic performance into consideration, and envelop GPA into a broader, holistic consideration. For instance, the Harvard University lawsuit over affirmative action revealed that Harvard rates students on a scale of 1–6 (with one being the most desirable) in academic, extracurricular, athletic and personal categories. A student’s GPA and test scores are folded together into an academic score which “summarizes the applicant’s academic achievement and potential based on grades, testing results, letters of recommendation, academic prizes, and any submitted academic work.”

This process aims to provide a fair and equitable evaluation of students from different educational backgrounds. Keep in mind that Harvard considers not only your grades, test scores, and academic rigor in this score, but also “evidence of substantial scholarship” and “academic creativity,” which can make the difference between a 1 and a 2 in the scoring system. These systems underscore the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity, showcasing your unique personality and creativity, and seeking to maximize opportunities to improve your performance within the academic landscape of your institution.

By understanding the complex way by which colleges evaluate students’ GPAs, you are better equipped to present a comprehensive and competitive picture of your academic achievements on your transcript and stand out in the competitive Ivy League admissions landscape.

*Variations exist for in-state versus out-of-state students and by high school. Be sure to calculate your GPA following the UC issued guidelines.

‘Before June 4…’: Amit Shah has a stock market prediction for investors ahead of Lok Sabha election results

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Amit Shah has a stock market prediction for investors ahead of June 4 results

Exuding confidence of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s return to power for a third consecutive term, Union Home Minister Amit Shah dismissed concerns around correction being neen in Indian stock markets and predicted a rally after the results are declared on June 4.

In conversation with NDTV, Shah advised against linking elections to the stock market but said that a stable government in power does pave the way for it to perform better. In a comment made in gest, Shah advised investors to “buy” before the results are announced on June 4, claiming that the markets would rally after the formation of a BJP government at the Centre.

“Stock market crashes should not be linked with elections, but even if such a rumour has been spread, I suggest you that buy (shares) before June 4. It (market) will shoot up,” he said.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 4 Voting: All about Phase 3 polling date, timings, candidates and constituencies

Shah reiterated that the NDA would achieve its target of 400-plus seats and a stable government would be formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Therefore, the share market will certainly go up,” he claimed.

Stock markets tanked on Monday following heavy selloff by Foreign Institutional Investors in May, a development that some analysts have linked to uncertainty over the poll outcome. On Monday, the Sensex fell 742 points to 71,992 in early trade while the Nifty slipped 194 points to 21,861.

The crask has resulted in investors losing Rs 4.85 lakh crore since the last trading session on May 10. Early trade showed only 910 of the 3,431 stocks trading in greeen while over 150 stocks hit their lower cricuit.

In conversation with NDTV, Shah, however, dismissed the ongoing correction as rumours linking it to a possible poor performance by the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. Shah also pointed out that bigger corrections in stock markets have been seen 16 times prior to Monday’s correction.

According to Shah’s self-sworn affidavit filed with the Election Commission of India during the filing of his nomination from Gandhinagar in Gujarat , the minister and his wife Sonal Shah cumulatively own over Rs 37.46 crore in stocks. While Shah has a stock portfolio valued at around Rs 17.46 crore, his wife also holds stocks worth around Rs 20 crore.

Shah’s personal stock portfolio reveals that his top 5 investments – HUL, MRF, Procter & Gamble Hygiene And Health Care , and ABB India – make up approximately one-third of his entire listed portfolio.
