Our course will transform you as a writer, giving you a surer sense of the technical and emotional complexes that underpin any act of writing.

You’ll study the craft of prose fiction with an internationally excellent cohort of other writers, and you’ll be taught by an outstanding and committed faculty – which includes Andrew Cowan, Naomi Wood and Tessa McWatt, to name a few – alongside internationally recognised visiting writers – recent examples include Tsitsi Dangarembga, Margaret Atwood, Ali Smith, Caryl Phillips and Preti Taneja.

We will challenge you to explore your notions about writing and being a writer, provoking you into play, experimentation and risk, with the intention of making you the best writer you can be.

After this intensive year, you’ll leave the course confident of technique and craft, as well as your own voice. It’s no wonder that our students’ success is unparalleled, with many of our graduates going on to publish their own work – with others moving into publishing, journalism or teaching.

The MA Prose Fiction at UEA is the oldest and most prestigious Creative Writing programme in the UK. Solely focused on the writing of fiction, we take a rigorous and creative approach to enable you to develop your ideas, voice, technique and craft.

You’ll experience an intensive immersion in the study of writing prose fiction. You will take core creative modules but can also choose from a wide range of critical modules, and benefit from our proven strengths in modernism and creative-critical studies, among others.

Bachelors (Hons) degree - 2.1 or equivalent preferred in any subject. Candidates are required to submit a portfolio of writing for assessment of between 3000 and 5000 words with their application. This could be part of a novel in progress or a piece or pieces of short fiction.

**Overview**

Do you have a story to tell? A memoir you want to write? Biography? Travel? Autofiction? Consider a career as a creative non-fiction writer with an MA that gives you the best grounding possible in an exciting literary field.

This is one of the only dedicated creative non-fiction writing courses in the UK. You’ll be taught by award-winning authors who will support your development as a writer. You’ll think from day one about where you might publish your own work.

You’ll experiment with your writing and develop your skills through reading your peers’ non-fiction in workshop groups. Each week in the seminar room, with its lively, collegiate atmosphere, you’ll analyse a celebrated work of non-fiction by Joan Didion, for example, or Zadie Smith, Primo Levi or Zora Neale Hurston – to see how it’s done. In one-to-one tutorials with your supervisor, you’ll be encouraged to explore new ways of storytelling and to experiment with different subjects and voices. You’ll write a dissertation under the supervision of a faculty member; the dissertation might contain the seed of a future book.

You’ll be based in UEA’s world-famous Creative Writing department, which is part of the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing (you can follow our activities on Instagram!). You’ll also take part in Norwich’s vibrant literary culture, from regular readings and events to the well-established programme at the National Centre for Writing. You'll benefit from UEA’s connections in the publishing industry and pitch ideas for books to visiting publishers and literary agents. You’ll meet established non-fiction authors and quiz them about their craft. Recent guest speakers include Marina Warner, Olivia Laing, Julia Blackburn, Lea Ypi, and Colin Grant. At the end of each year, we publish an anthology of our students’ writing and distribute it to a key list of editors, agents and critics.

Graduates from the course, such as Andrew Kenrick (winner of the 2023 Tony Lothian Prize), Ike Anya, Caroline Davison and Pyae Moe Thet War, have gone on to publish acclaimed and diverse works of non-fiction. If you want to join them and become a biographer, nature writer, essayist, memoirist or travel writer, this MA programme is for you.

Our best modern writers have been experimenting with new forms and subjects. Nature-writing, the personal essay, biography, food journalism, art criticism and memoir are all part of the intellectually stimulating emerging mix.

If you want to develop your own non-fiction writing in any of these genres or one of your own, this MA programme is for you. You’ll study on one of the only dedicated non-fiction MA courses in the UK at the country’s leading university for the teaching of creative writing. This enables you to graduate with the best grounding possible for a successful and fulfilling literary career.

**About This Course**

This is one of very few courses in the UK that gives you the opportunity to concentrate exclusively on writing non-fiction. Our students come from extremely varied backgrounds, and in the past have included barristers, a zoologist, actors, doctors, teachers, a Master of Wine and an asparagus farmer!

The age range is diverse, too: from people in their early twenties to those in their sixties and seventies. Students come from all parts of the globe, but all are united in their desire and commitment to writing non-fiction. The diversity of students and the range of their interests is one of the great strengths of the course, as is its collegiate atmosphere: you’ll learn as much constructively critiquing your peers’ writing as you will writing your own pieces.

Some people come with a project in mind, others have no specific idea about what they want to write. Either approach is fine – the course gives you the opportunity to develop an existing project and to experiment with different subjects and voices. Your time at UEA offers you a unique opportunity to focus on your writing in a stimulating and supportive environment.

Kazuo Ishiguro: A Creative Writing student of UEA

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature joined the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) MA in Creative Writing in 1979. For the EACWP, this award is also an occasion of great celebration on behalf of our Brittish colleagues and the rest of our pedagogical community devoted to the Creative Writing teaching. This text -originally published by the UEA- comprises some of Ishiguro’s testimonies as a Creative Writing student  as well as some enriching accounts from his teachers

In an anthology compiled for the 40th anniversary of UEA’s Creative Writing programme in 2011, Mr. Ishiguro wrote of his first weeks in Norfolk and on campus:

“I had that autumn arrived with my one suitcase, a guitar and a portable Olivetti typewriter in Buxton, Norfolk – a small village with an old water mill and flat farm fields all around it. I’d come to this place because I’d been accepted on a one-year postgraduate Creative Writing course at the University of East Anglia.”

Prof. Jon Cook, who taught Mr. Ishiguro when he was an MA student at UEA, said: “His impact on English literature is the result of a remarkable imaginative synthesis of the styles and sensibilities of two cultures: the Japanese and the English. His work is informed by his experience of both cultures, even when he is not writing directly about their interaction.”

In his memories of his days as a UEA student, Mr. Ishiguro wrote: “I’d rented a room in a small house occupied by a youngish man whose wife of two years had just left him.  No doubt, for him, the house was filled with the ghosts of his wrecked dreams – or perhaps he just wanted to avoid me; in any case, I wouldn’t set eyes on him for days on end. In other words, after the frenetic life I’d been leading in London, here I was, faced with an unusual amount of quiet and solitude in which to transform myself into a writer.

“It was in this room that I examined carefully the two short stories I’d written over the summer, wondering if they were too dreadful to submit to my new classmates. At that point in my life, I’d written virtually nothing else in the way of prose fiction, having earned my place on the course with a radio play rejected by the BBC. In fact, having previously made firm plans to become a rock star by the time I was twenty, my literary ambitions had only just made themselves known to me.

“Then quite suddenly one night, during perhaps my third or fourth week in that little room, I found myself writing, with a new and urgent intensity, about Japan – about Nagasaki, the city of my birth, in the last days of the Second World War.”

Prof. Christopher Bigsby, director of UEA’s Autumn Literary Festival, said Mr. Ishiguro’s “early novels were characterised by a tightly controlled prose and concerned people, on the fringes of major events, who committed themselves to the wrong cause.

“A theme which runs through all his novels has to do with characters trying to make sense of their lives, that and a concern with memory. The question is whether recalling the past is necessary or whether there are dangers. It is hard to think of a country in which this is not a relevant question or indeed individual lives in which this is not pertinent.”

Vice-Chancellor Prof. David Richardson added: “Norwich is England’s first UNESCO City of Literature for good reason and this is in no small part due to UEA’s creative writing courses. Nothing could make us prouder at UEA than a Nobel Prize winning alumnus and I’m absolutely delighted for Kazuo Ishiguro. We look forward to welcoming him next week when he opens the 25th annual Arthur Miller International Literary Festival.”

Our graduates have gone on to work in a wide variety of professions, as authors and journalists, and in theatre, television and film.

You might find them working in the arts, media, publishing and politics, charities and non-governmental organisations, teaching or the commercial sector.

Our drama courses have produced a great number of professional alumni in theatre, film and television, including Matt Smith, Olivia Vinall and BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Greg James.

Our graduates’ publishing success remains unrivalled. In 2017 one of our alumni, Kazuo Ishiguro, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and two other graduates – Ian McEwan and Anne Enright – have won the Booker Prize for Fiction (for which our alumni have been shortlisted on fifteen other occasions). Our graduates have won or been shortlisted for every major United Kingdom literary award.
