A degree in creative writing can sharpen your writing skills and improve your chances of becoming a successful writer. • Personal Essay. Eligible students will have to write a 500-word essay about their personal experiences and thoughts in relation to writing. Students should ask for feedback on personal essays from professors, fellow students, and family members to improve their chances.

4. The Reedsy National Creative Writing Scholarship

5. Bobette Bibo Gugliotta Memorial Scholarships for Creative Writing

• Awarded by: Silicon Valley Community Foundation
• Deadline: February 2023

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation offers $1,000 in scholarships to aspiring creative writing students. Only US citizens or A.B 540 students are allowed to apply. Applicants must be current graduating seniors or graduates of a high school in San Mateo or Santa Clara County. Moreover, they must be admitted to a four-year degree program as a full-time student. The application closes in February.

6. Writing the Future Scholarship

DiBella Law Offices PC offers a $1,000 one-time, non-renewable scholarship for post-secondary education. Any graduate or college student enrolled in a four-year university can apply. Moreover, students admitted to a two-year college or who have earned a high school diploma can also apply.

NROTC Navy Scholarship

• Description The Navy is preparing our officer corps of the future to meet the dynamic challenges in the next generation of technology and leadership. In structuring our academic programs to meet these challenges, undergraduate academic majors for NROTC Navy option midshipmen are divided into three categories or tiers: Tier 1 - engineering programs of Navy interest, Tier 2 - other engineering, math and science programs, Tier 3 - Foreign language and remaining academic programs.

NROTC Nurse Scholarship

• Description Students who apply for and gain admission to NROTC colleges offering the nursing academic program are eligible to pursue the NROTC Nurse scholarship track.

Scholarship Overview

Are you a college-bound high school senior with a love for the written or spoken word? If so, consider applying for the U.S. Creative Writing Awards Scholarship! The scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors who create and submit an original piece of written fiction, drama, poetry, a memoir/personal essay, or a spoken word piece. Penguin Random House, a multinational polishing company, funds the program. They focus on encouraging the next generation of authors and promoting diverse stories. Thus, since 1993, this program has empowered and celebrated young writers each year with more than $2.8 million awarded in scholarships. Each year, five recipients (one winner per category) earn up to $10,000 to go towards their college expenses. If you are passionate about writing and are looking to pay for tuition, we encourage you to apply!

While the semester is coming to a close, there is no shortage of 2020 scholarships open for the taking. It’s also not too early to apply for scholarships for the semester ahead. One of the most multifaceted, versatile skills and tenets to possess in education is writing . Many scholarships exemplify that, often including an essay portion with their other application requirements. 

However, this can be a double-edged sword. Those who excel at writing can showcase their skills through the writing component, but aspiring writers may also desire a more expressionist, outside the box, and artistically fulfilling application process.

From fiction to nonfiction, high schoolers to current college students, and ten words to ten thousand, the following list will run the gamut of genres, ages, and skill levels. All of these scholarships entail copious amounts of writing, most of them entail an overall solid GPA, and all have the potential to yield big tuition payouts. Read on to learn more. 

• Ten Words Or Less Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

• Dan Klepper Memorial Scholarship

Named in honor of outdoor enthusiast, conservationist, and San-Antonio Express journalist Daniel Klepper, this Texas Outdoor Writers’ Association scholarship aims to support the multimedia nature-minded content creators of the future. Students currently enrolled in accredited Texas universities with mass communications talents and ambitions to pursue outdoorsy careers are eligible and encouraged to apply. 

The reward is open to those with samples of all forms of communication (audio, visual, or written), although print or electronic writings are also sufficient, along with a brief summary, statement, and a few other required or optional prerequisites. The competition ends on the first of February every year. The winners are presented at the TOWA conference and awarded a $2,000 prize. • Lycoming College Creative Writing Scholarship

Creative writers and prospective creative writing majors interested in attending the Pennsylvania-based Lycoming College are encouraged to apply for the college’s Creative Writing Scholarship. Applicants should submit a short story of ten pages or less, and/or five poems to tout their prowess with the written word. Recipients must enroll in ENGL 240 in their freshman year and maintain a minimum of an A- in those respective courses.

The primary scholarship is intended for first-year freshmen or transfer students, but it can be renewed following the first year if recipients stay in creative writing courses and maintain at least an A- average. If they qualify for what Lycoming deems a “top applicant,” they can receive up to $3,000 per their biggest scholarship reward, the Arthur and Joanne Haberberger Creative Writing Scholarship. • Clearway Community Solar Essay Contest Scholarship

Clearway is one of the nation’s leading providers of renewable solar energy, and they are interested in scholars who have thoughts (1,000 words or more of those thoughts, to be exact) on renewable solar energy. 

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Have completed a minimum of 15 college credits or higher 
• Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
• Be enrolled in a program relevant to the environmental sciences 

The scholarship is two-tiered, with a first-place reward of $5,000 and second place reward of $2,500. Those who wish to enter should do so before the November 15th deadline here .

• Hope College Distinguished Artist Award in Creative Writing

Creative writers of faith who are interested in attending the Christian Hope College for liberal arts are highly encouraged to apply for their Distinguished Artist Award in Creative Writing. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher and be enrolled in at least one creative writing class to qualify. 

Applications have been open since October 22nd and will remain open through January 6, 2020.  Given the highly competitive nature of this creative writing scholarship (with only six awards a year), it’s advised that interested candidates apply sooner rather than later. Click here to learn more.

• Richard G. Zimmerman Scholarship

Dedicated to one of its long-standing members, this National Press Club Scholarship is open to all high schoolers with a GPA above 3.0 and a vested interest in pursuing a journalism career beyond their education. To qualify for a chance to win the hefty $5,000 lump sum, applicants must submit a variety of materials, including:

• Three work samples
• Three letters of recommendation
• One high school transcript and completed FAFSA Form
• One letter of acceptance

• Apprentice Ecologist Open Space Initiative

This initiative by the Albuquerque-based Nicodemus Wilderness Project is meant to encourage conservation-minded New Mexico youth to follow through with local ecology projects. After they are approved, applicants (13-21 years old) must submit a reflective essay (750-1500 words) with photos of their project. From there, they’ll be eligible to win a $500 scholarship prize. • FIRE Free Speech Essay Contest

The Foundation for Individual Rights In Education wants to hear from high school juniors and seniors who are passionate about issues surrounding free speech, the First Amendment, and censorship. Creative Writing Scholarships

Performance scholarships in creative writing are provided through the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts . Awards are for $850 (partial) or $1,700 (full) for the academic year. Scholarship students work with creative writing faculty and staff for four hours per week during their assignments. This scholarship is available to undergraduate and incoming APSU students only. To apply, email a 10-20-page manuscript, typed and double-spaced, of fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, to Calie Benke, Managing Editor of Zone 3  journal, at benke [email protected] or to Prof. Amy Wright at [email protected] . These applications may include a combination of genres but should not contain scholarly work. If you have any questions, please contact Prof. Wright at [email protected] .

Creative Writing Scholarships and Awards acknowledge excellence in creative writing by University of Louisville undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarship funds are distributed in varying amounts of tuition reimbursement. You do not have to be an English major to apply. Judges for the competition are the members of the English Department Creative Writing Committee.

Lewis Center for the Arts presents Readings of New Work by Students in Princeton’s Creative Writing Program

Three readings conclude the 2023-24 Althea Ward Clark W’21 Reading Series

Students in the Lewis Center for the Arts’ world-renowned undergraduate Program in Creative Writing at Princeton University will present new work in a series of readings. On Tuesday, April 16, at 5:00 p.m., selected students from spring courses in creative writing will read from their work in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and literary translation. Next, at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, seniors in the Program in Creative Writing will read from the screenplays or collections of poems or translations written as their senior independent work under the mentorship of professional writers on the faculty. The series will conclude on Wednesday, May 1, at 4:30 p.m., when seniors in the Program will read from the novels and collections of short stories written as their senior independent work under faculty mentorship. All three readings, which are free and open to the public, will take place in Chancellor Green Rotunda on the Princeton campus. Chancellor Green is an accessible venue. Guests in need of access accommodations are invited to contact the Lewis Center at [email protected] at least one week prior to the event date.

Through the Program in Creative Writing at the Lewis Center, students can earn a minor in creative writing in addition to their degree in a major. The seniors in the Class of 2024 are the last students who will receive certificates, rather than minors, in creative writing upon graduation. Each senior has the opportunity to pursue original work in fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and translation under the guidance of practicing, award-winning writers on the faculty, including Michael Dickman, Katie Farris, Aleksandar Hemon, A.M. Homes, Ilya Kaminsky, Christina Lazaridi, Yiyun Li, Paul Muldoon, Patricia Smith, Susan Wheeler, and a number of distinguished lecturers and visiting professors.

On April 16, several selected students will read from their work produced throughout the spring semester in introductory and advanced creative writing courses in fiction, poetry, literary translation, screenwriting, and creative nonfiction. Students enrolled in the special topics courses “The Act of Immersion: Reporting Deeply on the Lives of Others” and “Writing from Life” will also share their work. Averaging eight to ten students, these small workshop courses provide intensive feedback and instruction for both beginning and advanced students.

On April 30, the seniors who will read from their screenplays are Sierra Stern and Briony Zhao. The seniors who will read from their poetry are Kenza Benazzouz, Juliette Carbonnier, Ananya Grover, Sal Kang, Sabrina Kim, Ethan Luk, Hailey Mead, Zoe Montague, Anurag Pratap, Olivia Ragan, Mollika Singh, Grady Trexler, Emmett Willford, and Henry Wright. Senior Ellen Li will share her work in literary translation.

On May 1, the seniors who will read from their novels and collections of short stories are Anna Chung, Arlette Cojab, Sydney Eck, Andi Grene, Sydney Hwang, Ashley Hyun, Lara Katz, Amanda Kural, Abbie Lambert, Kate Lee, Tobias Nguyen, Claire Schultz, Cathleen Weng, and Valeria Zuluaga-Sánchez.

The Lewis Center’s Program in Creative Writing annually presents the Althea Ward Clark W’21 Reading Series, which provides an opportunity for students, as well as all in the greater Princeton region, to hear and meet the best contemporary writers. Guest writers over the past academic year included Sandra Cisneros, David Henry Hwang, Marlon James, current Professor of Creative Writing Ilya Kaminsky, Ling Ma, Khaled Mattawa, Hiroko Oyamada with translator David Boyd, and current Professor of Creative Writing Patricia Smith. The series is organized by Lecturer in Creative Writing and award-winning poet Michael Dickman.

High School Students Capture Awards for Creative Writing 

April 9, 2024

Two high school students achieved top honors in Anne Arundel Community College’s inaugural Young Writers Award . Savannah Schweitzer from Northeast High School won the fictional short story category with her piece titled "Fallen Apples.” Michaela Osei from Chesapeake Science Point earned first place in the poetry category for her poem, "Places I Never Knew."

"We're thrilled to offer this award and to encourage young people throughout the county to pursue creative writing,” said Garrett Brown , AACC professor and coordinator of creative writing . “I see it as our mission as the community's college to offer these kinds of opportunities in the too-often-unsupported literary arts."   

The Young Writers Award celebrates outstanding literary pieces from Anne Arundel County students in grades 11 and 12. The judges for this year’s awards included AACC English faculty members Johnny Lew, Ph.D., Katy D’Angelo, Ph.D., and KT Perkins .  

The judges noted that Schweitzer’s story “has an incredible opening line that sets up an emotional metaphor that carries throughout the piece. The writer demonstrates maturity of style, subtly and effectively communicates character development and theme.”  

They commended Osei’s poem for how it “uses concrete imagery and employs skillful use of line and stanza structure to enhance its visual and descriptive language.”  

Both winners will receive a cash prize and their works will be published in Amaranth, AACC’s award-winning journal of literature and the arts. Additionally, Schweitzer, Osei, their high school principals, English teachers and counselors have been invited to Amaranth’s May 9 release celebration.   

Amberlynn Gong from Severna Park High School and Evelyn Holiday from Annapolis High School were the runners-up in the short story category. Maika Ogawa from Crofton High School was the poetry category runner-up.  

Submissions for the 2025 Young Writers Award will open Sept. 15, 2024.

Congratulations to the winners of the eighth annual Mark and Melody Teppola Prizes in Creative Writing at Willamette University:

Poetry, judged by Jasminne Mendez, author of City Without Altar:

First Prize: "Breathing Room" by Milo Maltz

Judge’s comments: “Breathing Room” is a visually stunning concrete poem that meditates on what it means to live and love and experience the world as a nonbinary person. The language, line breaks and use of white space and the right margin exemplify and enrich the reader's experience and understanding of the poem's subject matter in a way that draws you in and holds you throughout the poem.

Second Prize: "Rooted Through the Pain” by Ari Torres

Judge’s comments: “Rooted Through the Pain” is a lyrical and deeply moving poem that sinks us deep into a body broken and yearning to be set free. Stark imagery of splintered wood, bloodied leaves and paper organs along with powerful lines about a "treacherous body/folding into its own rotting frame" echoed in my mind and stayed with me long after I had finished reading the poem.

Third Prize: "Hormone Therapy Request Form” by Spencer Fiden

Judge’s comments: Using the questions from an actual hormone therapy request form, this hermit crab poem uses vivid sensory details and a poetics of the body to share with us the intimate thoughts and emotions that could run through the mind of a patient seeking hormone replacement therapy. I loved how the form informed the content of the piece. 

Prose (Fiction & Nonfiction), judged by Matt Young, author of Eat the Apple

First Prize: “Waves” by Jess Kimmel

Judge’s comments: The brevity of this story, set against its expansive temporal scope and intricate world-building, kind of blew me away. It boasts deep characterization, diverse geography, and a richly woven mythology--all meticulously realized and explored. The writer's adept management of narrative distance kept me immersed in Mala's journey--her struggles, her ghosts, her demons--and it all cohered through this circular narrative structure and explorations of complex themes like identity, heritage, and fate. The ending (which gave me all the feels) stands out with its hauntingly beautiful imagery and reflective depth that intertwines those complex themes and brings a resonant sense of closure to Mala's tale. Plus: queer witch pirates in a dystopian fantasy. What's not to love?

Second Prize: “Visitation of the Worm” by Montegomery Remer

Judge’s comments: Dystopian exploration of technology? Check. Cronenbergian body horror? Check. Disturbing religious rites and rituals? Check. Both philosophical and spiritual, this piece explores trauma, isolation, death, and existence. Jianming's struggle with his sense of identity and reality throughout the story struck a chord with me--the literal dismemberment of the physical self coupled with a ritual that attempts to realize the necessity--and maybe even agency--of each part in hopes of bringing everything back together made me think of how an identity can schism in the wake of a trauma and how it often feels impossible to be whole again. It's a poignant metaphor about the continual process of attempting to craft a coherent mosaic of our fragmented identities in a world that is often disorienting and unknowable.

Third Prize: “Mosquito Bites” by Arlo Craft

Judge’s comments: Give me all the stories about kids doing weird kid stuff. This is a vivid and atmospheric piece that interweaves themes of nature, childhood, family, and the passage of time. Rich, descriptive settings and images, round and dynamic characters, and dialogue throughout that's--*chef's kiss*--just wonderfully rendered and engaging. The pacing here captures the languid, dreamy tempo of childhood summers while also interspersed with moments of keen perception and sharp insight. It's a rhythm that mirrors the ebb and flow of the swamp setting itself. The story excels in its portrayal of a child's perspective, exploring the world in a way that is both fantastical and grounded in reality that had me thinking about innocence and experience and the cyclical nature of life.

A busy beginning to the spring term in the english and creative writing department.

It's been a busy beginning to the spring term, around campus, and in the English and Creative Writing department, with several exciting events already taking place.

In the first week of the term, we had several well-attended events in celebration of the 150th birthday of Robert Frost. An article in The Dartmouth covers these lively events held in collaboration with other departments. In the second week of the term, Argentinian Cartoonist Liniers was off-site at Still North in conversation with Professor Peter Orner. The conversation was joyous, warm, and humorous while taking a direct look at the state of affairs. "Optimism is his superpower," a friend in the audience said of the cartoonist. Jennifer McMahon wins AIS Creative Writing Prize

Beautiful Like Her wins Jennifer McMahon short story competition judged by Marian Keyes, Roddy Doyle and Donal Ryan

Cork city native Jennifer McMahon has been awarded first place in the public category of the 2024 All Ireland Scholarships (AIS) ‘Fresh Pages, New Stories’ Creative Writing Competition, for her entry Beautiful Like Her.

The competition, now in its fourth year, was for the first time split into two categories; the existing AIS Alumni Association, plus a new, public category which Jennifer entered. The sub-categories included fiction, non-fiction and op-ed, with a maximum word count of 2,000 words. First place prize is €2,000, plus a place on UL’s Creative Writing Winter School – a residential, three-night professional development retreat for creative writers.

This year’s judging panel comprised a stellar trio of award-winning authors: Bestselling fiction writer, Marian Keyes, Ireland’s first Prix Jean Monnet winner for European Literature, Donal Ryan and legendary Irish author Roddy Doyle. The judging process was chaired by Professor Sarah Moore Fitzgerald, head of Creative Writing at UL and author of seven children and young adult novels.

Jennifer is an Irish author, Cork-born, and living in Co. Wexford. She is a winner of the Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair, has been shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards Short Story of the Year (2023), the Bridport Short Story Prize and many other notable awards, and has been nominated for Best Of The Net 2024. She was a second-place winner of the Oxford Prize (winter 2023).

Initiated in 2020, the AIS Creative Writing Competition has already uncovered notable creative talent. One such example is inaugural winner and recently published author Alice Kinsella, whose book ‘Milk: On Motherhood and Madness’ is now on the shelves in bookstores.

Sponsored by JP McManus, the All-Ireland Scholarship is a third level educational scholarship and is awarded to 125 of the highest-achieving students each year from the 32 counties.

Faculty “Writing” Groups (FWGs) are back with a slightly different process for registration.

Why a Faculty "Writing" Group?

FWGs provide you with accountability and camaraderie as you work toward your own individual research goals. (The word “writing” is being used loosely here to encapsulate whatever is involved from the inception of your idea to the completion of the final scholarship “product.”) Visit the Faculty "Writing" Groups webpage for examples of scholarship you might be working toward while participating in a FWG and for information on how to register.  

What should I expect after registration?

The Center for Faculty Development is now organizing FWGs on an on-demand basis. Once sufficient faculty are interested, you will be grouped with two or three other colleagues from across campus and will be invited to attend a brief launch meeting with your group and a member of the center.

Unpublished Writer's Award

The winner of this award receives $1,000, an invitation to accept the award at our annual awards ceremony, promotion on our website, and a feature of their work in our Magajournal and quarterly newsletter. The Phyliss J. McCarthy Scholarship for Excellence in Writing

LearnCurious is proud to introduce the annual competition for the Phyliss J. McCarthy Scholarship for Excellence in Writing. In 3,000 words or fewer, applicants must respond to one of three creative prompts. Entrants must be high school juniors or seniors to win.

Dark Poetry Scholarship

The Dark Poetry scholarship is designed to assist in the professional development of Horror and/or Dark Fantasy Poets. This scholarship is worth $1250, which may be spent on approved writing education over the two years following the granting of the scholarship.

Dennis Etchison Young Writers Scholarship

The Dennis Etchison Young Writers scholarship will be open to students in grades 10-12 (or the equivalent, if home schooled), with an interest in writing horror/dark fiction. Students must provide a selection of their work, at least one letter of reference by their instructor(s), and a description of their goals with an education plan for use of the stipend. The recipient will have 2 years to utilize the funds.

Additional awards: Horror author JG Faherty will mentor the winner for 6 months..

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Scholarship

It is clear to the HWA that there are unseen, but real, barriers limiting the amount of horror fiction being published by women. This scholarship, named after the great female horror writer, aims to encourage more female writers to enter our genre and to aid in the development of those already working within it.

Horror Writers Association Scholarship

The Horror Writers Association Scholarship will be open to all horror writers (HWA membership is not a requirement). Scholarship is designed to assist in the professional development of horror writers.

TalNexus Scholarship for a Master in Fine Arts Degree

The TalNexus Scholarship for a Master in Fine Arts Degree offers grants of up to $4,000 for storytellers (writers and filmmakers) pursuing degrees in Masters in Fine Arts. The award recognizes applicants of demonstrated talent in their craft and a commitment to exploring themes of individuality, community and innovation – broadly imagined – in their works.

YoungArts' National Arts Competition for Writing

YoungArts’ signature program is an application-based award for emerging artists ages 15-18 or in grades 10-12 from across the United States. YoungArts winners receive valuable support, including financial awards of up to $10,000, professional development and educational experiences working with renowned mentors, and performance and exhibition opportunities at some of the nation’s leading cultural institutions.

New York Life Award

The National New York Life Award, sponsored by the New York Life Foundation, provides six students whose works explore personal grief, loss, and bereavement with $1,000 scholarships. Additional state scholarships of $500 are available to two students from select states. Note that deadlines for all Scholastic Art & Writing Awards vary depending on your state.

Civic Expression Award

The Civic Expression Award, sponsored by the Maurice R. Robinson Fund, provides six students whose works best promote responsible participation in civic life with $1,000 scholarships. This award is part of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens. Note that deadlines for all Scholastic Art & Writing Awards vary depending on your state.

Unigo $10k Scholarship

Provide a short written response to the following question: "Imagine a historical figure is brought back to life. Who is it? What‘s their favorite mobile app?” Response should be limited to 250 words or less.

Organization: Unigo.

Deadline: December 31, 2024.

Deming Fund Grant

We award small artist support grants ($500 – $1,500) to individual feminist women in the arts who are citizens in the U.S and Canada. We welcome applications from women artists and writers who exhibit high quality and originality, use feminism as their central interpretive lens, and validate and express intersectional views.

Arts for Life! Scholarship

Arts for Life! annually awards $1,000 scholarships to 25 graduating high school seniors in Florida who demonstrate excellence in creative writing, dance, drama, music or visual art. To apply, students must submit a completed application, a brief essay explaining “how the arts have positively influenced my life,” and a portfolio of work in creative writing, dance, drama, music, or visual art.

Porter Fleming Literary Competition

The Porter Fleming Literary Competition honors the memory of Porter Fleming, one of Augusta, Georgia’s leading citizens and foremost philanthropists. The Porter Fleming Literary Competition consists of four categories — fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and one-act play — and awards $7,000 in cash awards, distributed evenly across these categories.

What are writing scholarships?

Writing scholarships are financial awards given to students based primarily on written work, though other factors are usually taken into consideration as well. Most writing scholarships involve a prompt or series of prompts to which applicants must respond. Some writing scholarships — especially those that award large amounts of money — require applicants to submit past writing samples, or even a full portfolio.

The good news is that, with so many writing scholarships to choose from, you don’t have to apply for any that are “out of your league.” Indeed, though most students have heard of writing scholarships, you may not realize just how many different varieties there are! Here are five of the most common types of writing scholarships, all of which you can find in this directory.

1. Personal essay scholarships

Personal essay scholarships involve writing on a topic related to your own experience. You’ll often see personal essay prompts like, “How have your experiences influenced your choice of major?” and “What are your career aspirations and how do you plan to achieve them?” Other prompts may ask you to write about a role model, a life-changing event, an aspect of your identity, etc. Suggested length is usually about 500-1,000 words, but varies depending on the level of detail requested and how many essay questions are provided.

Just about every scholarship these days has a personal essay component of some kind. This is because personal essay responses both demonstrate writing skills and give the judges a clear sense of each applicant’s goals. No one wants to throw away money on an aimless student — so if you’re applying for a personal essay scholarship, make sure to convey both your writing abilities and your ambitions in your work!

2. Critical essay scholarships

Critical essay scholarships are more in line with what students might consider  “academic” essays. The prompts typically ask applicants to analyze works of literature. However, unlike open-ended English class essays, most critical essay scholarships provide a very specific prompt (e.g. “Examine The Great Gatsby in the context of its World War II-era revival”).

Critical essay scholarships can also involve non-literary subject matter. Some may ask applicants to evaluate a historical event or figure; others may ask them to defend their stance on a political or legal issue. Though the line between critical and personal essays can sometimes blur, for the purposes of this directory, we define critical essays as those that use evidence from an external source to prove a point.

3. Short fiction scholarships

Short fiction scholarships include scholarships for short stories, one-act plays, poetry, and any other form of fiction that isn’t a novel or full-length script. Short fiction scholarships tend to be easier to find than long-form fiction scholarships, since most judging panels don’t have time to read more than a few thousand words per entry. Therefore, if you write fiction and you’re hoping to nab yourself a scholarship, this category is the way to go! (That said, if you’re a hardline novelist, some places will accept a sample chapter or two as short fiction entries.)

4. Journalism scholarships

Journalism scholarships are for students interested in pursuing a career in news, magazine, and/or online journalism. These scholarship applications almost always ask for writing samples to show the candidate’s interest. Depending on the organization, they may prefer topical news reports, informative articles, thinkpieces, or a mix. Some journalism scholarships provide a prompt and ask applicants to write a new article, but the focus is usually on samples. Speaking of which…

5. Portfolio scholarships 

Portfolio scholarships are the most rigorous kind of writing scholarship, requiring a substantial body of work from each applicant — usually 5-10 pieces of writing, if not more. The upside is that awards for portfolio scholarships tend to be pretty sizable, and may even cover your entire tuition!

If you decide to apply to a portfolio scholarship, make sure you have several strong pieces of work in your oeuvre, and consider writing a few new pieces as well. What you shouldn’t do is rush through a dozen new pieces to throw together as a portfolio. If you don’t have samples at the ready from previous assignments or projects, you’ll be better off applying to a less intensive writing scholarship.

Why apply to writing scholarships?

Applying to writing scholarships is a huge undertaking, especially if you’re pursuing multiple scholarships at once. It can sometimes feel like the effort isn’t worth it, or that you have little chance of actually winning any awards. But in truth, submitting to writing scholarships is one of the best investments you can make in your education, your creative writing skills, and your professional life.

Scholarships for larger amounts do attract more applicants, but that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to land — only that you have to work a little harder to stand out. And you can definitely sway the odds in your favor by applying to lots of small scholarships ($500 or less) for which you’ll have fewer competitors. Remember that every little bit helps! For example, if you plan on taking out student loans, even a $500 scholarship could save you much more in interest down the line.

Another compelling reason to apply to writing scholarships is that oftentimes, you’ve already done the work, or the work required is minimal. For scholarships that require writing samples, you’ll simply submit what you’ve already written in the past — and even for scholarships with specific prompts, you rarely have to write more than a couple of pages. If you were seriously committed, you could apply to a scholarship every day, spending a single concentrated evening on each application.

Jumping off that thought, as English majors love to say: the more writing scholarships you apply for, the better a writer you’ll become. Writing tons of scholarship essays will make you a much more creative and efficient writer. Not only will this help with your personal writing projects, but it will also be invaluable to your education and even your career! Writing is a crucial skill for every major — you’ll always have to write papers and emails to professors, after all — and even if you don’t plan to pursue a writing-based job, you'll still need writing skills to polish your résumé.

Finally, remember that there’s a writing scholarship out there for everyone, no matter what your interests or intended field. This directory includes plenty of creative writing scholarships, yes; but there are also personal essay scholarships for future doctors, lawyers, salespeople, and so much more.
