‘Carbon’ Review: A Refreshingly Fresh Investigative Thriller That Impresses
The film's story revolves around Shankar (Vidaarth), a wannabe policeman who ends up taking up a job in a private firm because of a quarrel with his dad (played by Marimuthu).
Vidhaarth, Dhanya B., Marimuthu and Munar Ramesh
Director Srinuvasan's 'Carbon' is a refreshingly fresh investigative thriller that keeps you hooked from start to finish, thanks to an innovative plot that has some really interesting twists right till the very end.
Shankar has a strange gift. He often has dreams and more importantly, his dreams come true.
One night, the man dreams of his dad being hit by a black SUV. The nightmare leaves him shaken. He wakes up breaking into a sweat and frantically begins to search for his dad only to realise that he has had an accident just as he had dreamed.
Shankar rushes his unconscious dad to the hospital, where doctors tell him that it's imperative that they perform a surgery that is going to cost him a fortune. The only way out for Shankar will be to find the person responsible for the accident and claim the insurance amount.
With the cops not making any serious effort to find the driver of the vehicle, Shankar realises he will have to carry out the investigation himself.
It is at this point that one night, sitting beside his dad's bed, he dozes off out of sheer exhaustion. That's when he has a dream in which he sees the SUV that caused the accident. The door of the SUV opens and just as the driver is to get out, Shankar is woken up by the woman who cleans the hospital ward.
In the desperate hope that the same dream could reappear if he did all the tasks that he did that particular day, Shankar attempts a repeat the next day.
Things don't work out initially and the dream does not appear. Waiting for the dream to recur, Shankar, with the help of his sharp sense of observation, realises that it was not just a hit-and-run case; it was actually an attempt to murder his dad. Who would want to murder his dad and why would they want to do it? Does Shankar find out the criminal? And does he save his dad? 'Carbon' gives you the answers.
The film is a gripping thriller and full marks to director Srinuvasan for having told the story in a neat and compact manner. Half of the credit for the film being tight and gripping should go to editor K.L. Praveen for his brilliant cuts. There are absolutely no unnecessary scenes and the story moves at a blistering pace, right from the word 'go'.
Within the first 10 minutes of the film, the director showcases the strong bond of love between the father and son, who despite not being on talking terms with each other, deeply care about one another. And within the same period, he also explains everything about Shankar's dreams and their tendency to come true.
Sam CS's background score provides ample support to the director who is looking to narrate a gripping thriller. His score captures the mood and amplifies it, making sure the audience has no trouble in understanding the emotion the director is looking to convey.
Vidhaarth as Shankar is just outstanding in the film, which incidentally happens to be his 25th. He plays the part to perfection and wins your heart hands down.
Dhanya B, who appears in the film just before the intermission, is perfect for the role and delivers a commendable performance. The reason why the second half is as intense as the first is primarily because of Dhanya's characterisation and contribution.
Maarimuthu as Vidhaarth's dad delivers a commendable performance. The care and concern that he showcases while appearing to be strict to his son is just so adorable.
Director Srinuvasan, while narrating a thrilling entertainer, also actually highlights a fact that Tamil cinema has often chosen to misinterpret. It looks to set the record straight with regard to dad-son relationships and highlights that for every son his dad is a hero. And that invariably, sons love their dads as much as their mothers, if not more.
Some of the dialogues in the film are deep and hit the nail on the head. For instance, there is this scene in which the heroine asks the hero, "Sons are supposed to be close to their mothers. You seem to be different." To this, the hero replies, "When a man's mother passes away, her place is filled by his wife. But when a man's dad passes away, that place remains vacant. Which is why sons miss dads a lot more than their mothers. The position that dads hold in a son's life is special."
It is not as if the film has no problems. There are some lapses in logic towards the end of the film. Also, the manner in which cops are showcased in the film dents the realism somewhat. But these are small lapses which can be forgiven.
On the whole, 'Carbon' is a good, neat, sleek investigative thriller that is definitely worth your time.

Carbon movie review: The Fahadh Faasil starrer is a must-see
Carbon movie review: venu has maintained a firm grip on the storytelling and beautifully brings out emotional conflicts in the characters in a well-written screenplay. carbon is an engaging adventure film that should not be missed..
Carbon movie cast: Fahadh Faasil, Mamta Mohandas, Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothan Carbon movie director: Venu Carbon movie rating: 4 stars
In the beginning of the second half, director Venu’s Carbon slides into a fantasy-esque song sequence Dhoore Dhoore. It is a beautiful composition by Vishal Bhardwaj and has been shot so aesthetically by KU Mohanan, it is hard not to fall in love with Sameera (Mamta Mohandas), who is dressed in a pleasing cream gown with a splash of green in the song. A sleep-deprived Sibi (Fahadh Faasil) slowly melts into the mystic voice emerging from the deep forest and follows it. The song sequence as much as it is a treat for eyes and ears, it is also a complete opposite of the realism that the film had maintained thus far.
The song caught me by surprise as I wondered what was the need for that song in the story. Sameera was presented as a very soft and delicate person in the song, which is the complete opposite to her true nature. She is an adrenaline junky, who sleeps in the middle of the forest in the night without any fear. Sibi walking into the woods following the voice alone was also a surprise as he fretted the very thought of living in the forest. But, all the questions that the song throws up is answered towards the end. There is an emotional connection between Sibi and everything he experiences on his solo trip in the forest.
Sibi, an average guy from a middle-class family, is constantly in search of his lady luck. He knows that he is running out of time. On top of it, he has a loving family that constantly worries about his well-being. This fills Sibi with guilt that makes it impossible for him to keep a straight face with his caring father, played realistically by Spadikam George. He is in a hopeless situation but continues to hang onto the hope that his luck will turn around someday.
Sibi gets an assignment from a businessman played by Vijayaraghavan. He is sent off to an erstwhile palace, which is in the middle of a deep forest. His job is to go there assess the situation and come up with a plan to turn the creepy palace into a tourist hub. That is where he meets the caretaker, essayed by Kochu Preman, who tells him about the legend of a hidden treasure. Sibi sets off on a mission to find the golds hidden by a king in darkest hearts of the jungles as he feared an attack from the Tipu Sultan army.
But, the legend has it that the treasure is guarded by an army of ancient soldiers. From the moment Sibi enters the forest, Carbon turns into a suspense thriller as it keeps us curious about the presence of the supernatural force in the forest as suggested by the villagers.
Fahadh Faasil is in his element in Carbon. It is a pleasure watching him deliver such performances without breaking a sweat. Manikandan R Achari as a member of a forest tribe puts up a natural performance along with Fahadh. Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothan, Nedumudi Venu all add layers to the narration with their craft.
Venu has maintained a firm grip on the storytelling and beautifully brings out emotional conflicts in the characters in a well-written screenplay. Carbon is an engaging adventure film that should not be missed.

CARBON MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE
Every movie directed by a cinematographer will have a special visual beauty and when renowned cinematographer-director Venu returns with 'Carbon' after the 2014 Mammootty starrer 'Munnariyippu', you should prepare yourself to be amused by the picturesque grace of the rain forests of Kerala.
Sibi, the protagonist is a young man persistent on taking the shorter route to richdom. He is always trying hard to seal a deal on anything that ranges from barn owls to diamonds. He is asked to go to a palace in the middle of a forest and re-establish it as a tourist destination. The plot thickens when he learns about a Thalakkani, a place in the forest where gold that belonged to an ancient king has been hidden for a long time.
Cinematography and performances are the brightest parts of the movie that send a message most treasure hunt movies broadcast. Written by the director himself, the film begins by establishing the character of the protagonist and slowly weaves a connection that brings him to the palace. Even though the screenplay lacks novelty, the realistic treatment brings a freshness to it.
Fahadh Faasil gives a splendid performance and is as always, a treat to watch. Mamta plays the role of a 'Jungle Junkie' to perfection. Manikandan Achari and Chetan are tailor-made for their respective roles. Vijayaraghavan, Nedumudi Venu, and Kochupreman do justice to their parts.
The frames kept by K U Mohanan are capable of captivating the audience and casting a spell on them that will pull them to the magnificent misty mountains. The background score and the music by Vishal Bharadwaj are of top quality but a set of the audience would feel, the song 'Doore Doore' have pronouncing concerns and would have sounded better if sung by a Malayali.
If the screenplay was tighter, had surprises and told a not-so-ventured story, the brilliant cinematography and strong performances would have taken it to levels of high perfection.

Carbon Movie Review
Actor Vidhaarth who ventured in to Tamil cinema as a junior artist and went on to become a lead hero in Mynaa hits a milestone. His latest thriller drama marks his 25 th film landmark. The actor was last seen in the antagonist role in Anbarivu but he is back on screens as a lead hero with his investigative thriller movie Carbon. The film is about a young man trying to find the hit and run driver that put his father in a grave condition. Actress Dhanya plays the female lead. Film maker R Srinivasan has helmed the drama . So, how has the flick come out? Is it solid enough to give actor Vidhaarth the much needed break that he is after to revive his career? To know that let us get in to the movie review.
Carbon Movie Poster
The entertainer follows the life of Shankar (Vidhaarth), a young man who gives up on his dream of becoming a police man and takes up a job in a private company. A tussle with his father Subburayan (G. Marimuthu) is the reason he had to quit on his dream. This ruptures an already difficult father son relationship. The duo is not in speaking terms and voice messages are the only mode of communication between them. Shankar possess a superpower. Events that are about to occur will play out as dreams to him. For instance, a scenario plays out in his dream where Shankar gets hit by a vehicle while on jogging. He wakes up and goes for a jog. As he witnessed in his dream, a vehicle runs on his path, he tries to get out of the way and hops to his side. He still suffers a minor injury. The shock of his life comes to him when he dreams of his father getting hit by a garbage truck. He is shaken.
Shankar does everything in his power to stop the accident to save his father. But he could not. The accident transpires leaving his father gravely injured. Subburayan is admitted to a hospital. In order to treat him, Shankar needs a hefty amount of money. The only way Shankar is going to be able to cover the medical expense is by finding the person behind the wheel and make an insurance claim. Realizing the cops are not going to work to his need, he takes it up on himself to investigate and get his man. Meanwhile, he has the same dream again. He witnesses the vehicle clearly this time, just when he is about to get a look at the driver’s face his sleep is disturbed. Next day he expects to have the same dream. We have our twist; seems like the dream would repeat no more than two times without conditions. So, we have a set of rules in play. The dream is repeated. With his sharp observations Shankar finds out that the accident was a planned attempt on his father’s life.
Why would someone want to kill Subburayan, who is the perpetrator, will Shankar bring him to justice and save his father, is what makes the rest of the flick.
Director R Srinivasan does not waste any time in setting up the premise. He jumps right at it. He opens the film with a curiosity inducing piece. Then he laces few poignant moments between the father and son to help us understand the relationship they share. After some time, he embeds a concept that is sort of like time loop except that it is not. Unfortunately, these are the positives one could talk about, about the flick. The film has its moments but nothing much comes out of it. The script indeed looks interesting on paper. But what transpires on screen is not. One of the main reasons for it is, how the break or make moments of the plot are handled. The crucial moments are ruined by loopholes that are too much to stomach. For a thriller drama, it is a heavy price to pay.
In a sense, Carbon is a very demanding film. It wants us to overlook the make-believe factors in its core concepts and only when you accept its rules it allows you to get in to its world. For instance, a person could have a same dream again and again, to do that he just needs to reconstruct the precise events that occurred on the day. If you stay and keep contemplating about the rules it sets forth, it throws you off grid. And it does not even care about it. The worst thing is, even when you make the deal it offers, it does not deliver what it promised.
Actor Vidhaarth effortlessly pulls of his part. He shoulders the film quite comfortably. Actress Dhanya does have space to perform to an extent and she has done justice to it. It is just the chemistry between the lead pair that does not quite sit well. It is refreshing to watch actor G. Marimuthu in lighter shade. He is effective as usual. Actors Munar Ramesh and Vinod Sagar are adequate. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them.
On the technical front, musician Sam C. S track is not special but passable. His background score add value to the flick. Cinematographer Vivekanand Santhosham’s frames should have been better. Editor Praveen K L has done his best to cover the shortcomings of his colleague with his scissor work.
On the whole, Carbon has just about enough to get our attention for a short period but has nothing interesting to hold it throughout the film.

Carbon movie review: Fahadh Faasil is a showstopper in an unslottable adventure
Some films refuse to settle into a single genre. Venu’s Carbon, with Fahadh Faasil in the lead, is one such that will not be tied down by slotting.
Some films refuse to settle into a single genre. Writer-director Venu’s Carbon is one such that will not be tied down by slotting. Funny throughout, eerie in places, suspenseful in parts and, especially in the second half, gazing wide-eyed at the wondrousness of nature, it drifts about in a trance just like its male protagonist whose head is forever floating in the clouds.
Siby Sebastian, played by Fahadh Faasil, is constantly hatching legally and morally dubious get-rich-quick schemes, while youngsters his age take up jobs, marry and manage their homes. He knows he is seen as a loser, a layabout and a fraud by the community, but is unshaken by their judging eyes. Some day, somewhere over the rainbow, he is sure he will make his millions.
The first half of Carbon is spent establishing Siby’s kookiness combined with delicious non-conformism and the effect of his shady affairs on his friends and parents. After flitting from one failed plan to the next — ranging from peddling a gem that is not his to working as a middleman in an elephant sale — he is tasked with visiting a remote spot where one of his contacts has bought a decaying palace. His assignment is to recce the place and figure out how it can be turned into a tourist resort. Once there, when Siby hears of a lost treasure from the era of Tipu Sultan, he zeroes in on his next grand adventure.
With Carbon , award-winning cinematographer Venu returns to direction after the 2014 thriller Munnariyippu . His new film walks a thin line between being wacky and completely wacko. The story offers no answers and the messaging is open-ended. Through Mamta Mohandas’ character Sameera, a self-professed “jungle junkie”, it references Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, yet it appears to contradict the point about the treasure in your backyard in its climactic shot.
This is a film that is exasperatingly, fascinatingly open to interpretation at all levels. Every step of the way, I found myself expectantly waiting for the next hint of its intent, the next shot, the next turn, the next rustle of leaves, the next whisper in the wind, the next creature camouflaged by trees or resting in its cave, and in the end I was left somewhat bemused and still intrigued.
It is often unclear in the film whether we are watching reality or one of Siby’s dreams, whether a character exists in fact or in his imagination. How much of Carbon is taking place in Siby’s head is worth considering, all the while remembering what Professor Dumbledore tells Harry Potter as the curtain comes down on JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
The film’s full name is Carbon: Ashes and Diamonds from which you might surmise that it is about what we do with the cards we are dealt by fate. Will you allow life to reduce you to ashes or will you, as carbon is wont to do under tremendous pressure, emerge a shining diamond? This then is as much Siby’s journey to find himself as it is to find an ancient hoard of gold.
It is more though. “We need a bit of fantasy to liven up our lives” — you have heard Siby utter these words in Carbon’s trailer. Perhaps this is a clue to the film’s mystery? Or perhaps not?
By not being condescending towards Siby’s opposition to social norms, Carbon reveals its own quietly rebellious streak. His refusal to go down the path that society expects all of us to follow – study, find work, marry, have kids, work, retire, die — is a reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all game plan for the human species and individuals must be left to make their own road. It is worth noting too that in his quest for a cache of precious metal, Siby chooses to push himself beyond his comfort zone. He is not naturally brave like Sameera, who does not bat an eyelid before sleeping out in the open in the jungle, but he overcomes fear to get where he wants to be.
The second half of Carbon is largely devoted to a long walk through forests near the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, which is when it becomes as much a survival saga as it is a treasure hunt.
If there were a National Award for Location Choices, it should go to the film’s location scouts. Post-interval, Carbon enters visual heaven, and KU Mohanan’s keen eye beautifully captures the thick vegetation typical of the region, looming rock formations, a glimpse of an elephant through dense trees, a herd of bison peeping back from the foliage, forbidding mountains, a cave on a cliff, a bubbling stream… Repeat: Heaven.
This is arguably the veteran cinematographer’s best work yet. Through large swathes of Carbon , all we see are Siby and his companions trekking across this splendid landscape. They barely speak. And Mohanan’s camera seems to call on us to walk along in communion with nature.
One grouse: The way Kammatipaadam’s Manikandan R Achari is shot in a cave here in a bid to make him scary. Achari plays a local called Stalin, who is Siby’s guide. The camera angle used on his face is designed to spook viewers. It bothered me that choosing him — not Faasil or Mohandas — for that shot, was an effort to cash in on widely held Indian biases regarding looks.
Carbon’s nicely underplayed sound design — with its clever use of the power of suggestion — is crucial to its effectiveness. Vishal Bhardwaj, making a rare foray outside Bollywood here, serves up a mixed bag of songs though. Benny Dayal’s robust rendition of ‘Thanna Thane’ briefly injects energy into an otherwise deliberately languorous film, but Rekha Bhardwaj’s terrible diction and poor singing of ‘Dhoore Dhoore’ are downers.
The cornerstone of Carbon is its cast. Fahadh Faasil steps so forcefully into Siby’s shoes that he sweeps us away in the tide of the fellow’s seemingly crazy convictions. Mamta Mohandas as Sameera owns every scene she is in, though she enters the picture only an hour into the narrative.
Venu does not settle for anything but the best in small supporting roles either. Achari as Stalin, Dileesh Pothan and Nedumudi Venu as Siby’s business allies are all in spiffing form. Kochu Preman and Soubin Shahir are appropriately twisted. Sharafudheen is unobtrusively hilarious as he offers his friend solace and wisdom. Praveena is memorably strange without going over the top. It is worth mentioning that apart from Achari, the others mentioned in this paragraph get just a few minutes each on screen. It is a measure of their arresting personalities and abilities along with Venu’s attention to detail that each makes a lasting impression nevertheless.
The pick of the supporting cast is Spadikam George playing Siby’s father. There is a scene in which the two meet in a marketplace after a gap. The way the dad looks at his son, using the most fleeting of hand gestures and a glance to convey his deep affection and a parent’s longing to have his son back home, come what may, his faults be damned, is unforgettable.
Venu, to borrow the title of Arundhati Roy’s book, is a god of small things and the big picture in Carbon . His idiosyncratic cinematic vision and the la la land of Siby’s mind make for enjoyable viewing in this unusual film.

Shankar is the son of Subburayan, a garbage truck driver. Shankar often gets dreams that hint him the upcoming incidents. Once, he gets a dream that shows him that he would meet an accident. It happened, and hence Shankar started believing his dreams. Later, he gets a dream that his father involves in an accident. That too happens, and he finds no money for further treatment. So, he decides to get a time loop with which he could find the person who made that accident to get money from him for his father’s treatment. Will that happen? The rest of the film follows this.
Star Performance
Vidharth did his best. His expressions and body language are good. It is good to know that it is his 25 th film. Marimuthu has got a solid role, and he excelled in it. Dhanya is not given a usual heroine role, and she also has some worthy part to play.
Unlike the time loop movies, this film stands unique. The plot is different, and the actors are given space to emote well. The characters are designed well, and the right people are placed. The editing department needs to be appreciated for the work done. But, some places needed better writing. However, the screenplay is quite engaging and makes the audience watch the film throughout.
What’s There?
- Characters are designed well
- The lead stars did their best
What’s Not There?
- Certain scenes needed better writing
The film is unique in its style, and the director has done his best in his debut. If some scenes involving Vidharth and Dhanya had been penned better, it would have attracted more audience. However, Carbon is watchable once!
