The creation of a single minute of footage for an animated TV show or movie can take weeks or even months of collaborative work by artists, directors, producers and technicians.

Animation requires patience, and anyone who intends to join the field should consider whether they would enjoy the process of making animation "so that they don't get bored with it or they don't get disenchanted with it, but they really love that process," says Maija Burnett, director of the character animation program at the California Institute of the Arts and assistant dean of its film and video school.

Here is a guide on what it means to be an animator and how to enter the animation field.

What Is an Animator?

The term animator could arguably apply to anyone who is involved with creating the imagery in a cartoon-based motion picture, and it is often used that way.

However, at major animation studios, people with animator job titles are usually responsible for deciding how cartoon characters move and what facial expressions they make. These animators work alongside storyboard artists, character designers and background artists.

What You Need to Enter the Animation Field

Animated feature films can take years to make – often longer than live-action movies. Diligence is a requirement for the animation industry, experts say, and so is the ability to compromise and accept criticism, since solo projects are rare in the field.

"When you work in animation, you get a ton of notes," says Jeanette Moreno King, president of the Animation Guild Local 839 union and supervising director of "Little Demon," an animated TV series for adults. "Everybody gets notes – even, the upper executives making decisions are getting notes, down to the PA (i.e. production assistant). So you can't get too personally attached to anything that you're working on, because your heart will get broken."

A detail-oriented disposition is a must for a future animator, experts say. Timothy G. Jones, director of the Academic Media Center at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania – where he is also an assistant professor of media studies – says one exciting aspect of making an animated video is that a filmmaker can exert "granular and detailed control" over what happens in each frame of the video.

"That may appeal to students who may not be able to be as assertive or exercise that control on a film set with a large number of people," Jones says.

Burnett says aspiring animators should devote significant time to drawing accurate and interesting pictures based on the movements of real-life models.

"It's kind of like if you're a piano player, and you're playing the scales every day and arpeggios just to get your fingers really in shape," Burnett explains, noting that animation requires similar hand-eye coordination.

Animation Education and Training

It is possible to get a job within the animation industry without having a degree in animation or a related field if you have an impressive collection of projects, experts say.

"I personally have a master's degree, but no one cares," says Jasmine Katatikarn, the CEO and founder of the Academy of Animated Art, a virtual school that offers nondegree programs for aspiring lighting artists in the animation industry. "No one even asks me if I graduated from high school. ... Your portfolio speaks for itself."

A primary benefit of attending an exceptional animation school, experts say, is the opportunity to learn from creative classmates and talented faculty. Strong animation programs usually require students to complete and refine multiple animated videos, which can later be presented to hiring managers at animation studios.

Animation degree programs sometimes focus on a particular type of animation, such as the traditional two-dimensional, hand-drawn type or the computer-enhanced three-dimensional variety. Within the world of computer-generated imagery, or CGI, animation, there are multiple specialties, including 3D modeling, rigging and lighting.

Community college or vocational school animation programs may concentrate on the techniques necessary to do a particular job within the animation industry. Such hyper-focused programs tend to be less expensive and shorter than a more general animation education.

In contrast, degree-granting animation schools tend to offer a wide-ranging curriculum that covers key principles of storytelling within animated videos and also addresses design considerations such as the use of color. These schools usually offer classes on animation software programs and require students to participate in group projects with classmates.

The most common degrees for aspiring animators are Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. Some animation schools offer Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degrees that focus on the technical side of animation.

Prospective animation students generally need to submit samples of their artwork when they apply, and the quality of that work is a key consideration in the admissions process. Some animation programs routinely reject the majority of applicants. For instance, the Brigham Young University Center For Animation in Utah states on its website that the center typically receives 60 to 75 applications a year and usually accepts 20 to 25 of those applicants.

Here are a few examples of reputable schools that offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in animation and whose alumni often work for major animation studios, including those operated by DreamWorks Animation, the Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros.

• California Institute of the Arts , or CalArts, was founded by the Disney family. Some of the school's most notable animation degree recipients have received Academy and Emmy Awards, and alumni have frequently been nominated for such prizes.
• Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida has trained more than 15 people who have earned Student Academy Awards, according to its website.
• Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia graduates students who are often invited to present their movies at major film festivals and get high-profile jobs at major TV channels like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, according to the school.

An Overview of Animation Jobs

Animation differs from other creative professions where jobs are scarce and salaries tend to be modest, according to people who have spent decades in the animation industry. Animation is a growing occupation with some lucrative employment options, a powerful labor union that lobbies for high wages and good working conditions, and influential talent agents.

The median salary reported by U.S. special effects artists and animators in May 2021 was $78,790, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which predicts that the number of jobs in this field will be 16% higher in 2030 than it was in 2020 – a growth rate that is double the average among all occupations.

Because animation is often used in advertisements, digital games, educational materials, journalism and medical imagery, demand for animators extends beyond television and movie studios, experts say.

According to Jones, many animators work as freelancers, and they often work remotely from places outside of major metropolitan areas. King notes that animators working on film and television projects are often expected to produce art extremely quickly and sometimes cope with significant stress.

For some people, the fantasy of working in animation is enticing, but the actual experience of an animation job is unsatisfying, King says. "It does take a lot of focus and attention, and it's really slow-moving, it's true, and it takes a lot of people to do it. Even people that create shows can't completely claim their show because it takes so many people to move it."

3D Animator

Television, movies, video games, commercials and the Internet are a few of the platforms for which you could potentially create content as a professional animator. As an animator, you'll often work with a team of people who develop, design, draw, edit and perfect a finished product. You'll meet with design professionals, editors, head animators, storyboard developers and more. Animation jobs can be found across the country; however, major cities with large media markets, such as New York City and Los Angeles, tend to offer the lion's share of employment opportunities in this field.

Requirements

Many animators hold a bachelor's degree in computer graphics or another field related to art; however, your portfolio and experience in the field of 3D animation might have more impact on your job prospects than your formal education. The number of years of experience that you'll need depends largely on the employer and the level of the position you're applying for. In many cases, companies require extensive on-the-job training.

The following positions for 3D animators were posted online in December 2012:

• An events and meetings company in Arizona was hiring a 3D animator/graphic artist with at least 1-2 years of experience and an associate's degree.
• In New York City, a computer software company was seeking a 3D animator to animate body motions in 2D and 3D. A bachelor's degree was required for this full-time position.
• An architectural firm in New Jersey was searching for a 3D animator and modeler with a minimum of five years of experience in the field.

Standing Out

Computer prowess and skills with a variety of software can help you stand out as an animator and visual artist. Common 3D modeling software that you can learn includes AutoDesk Softimage XSI and AutoDesk Maya. Knowledge of Cinema 4D, VFX, Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter also might be useful. Some positions require skills with Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premier Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro.

Art Director

Motion graphics and visual effects art directors often work in a variety of media. You could potentially be in charge of a 3D animation staff for advertising, television, movies and online content for a variety of private and public companies and organizations. Typically, you'll monitor the development, design, aesthetic, layout and feel of various animated projects. Managing staff, deadlines, budgets and clients and making final design decisions are typical job duties.

A bachelor's degree in 3D animation, visual arts or a similar field is usually required to become an art director. This is commonly a position acquired through years of experience, including work as a staff animator and some sort of administrative expertise. You'll also need a solid online and/or physical portfolio.

Here are a few art director jobs that employers posted online in December 2012:

• In Wisconsin, a video game publisher and software company was looking for an individual to manage its animation department. Requirements included a bachelor's degree in animation, five years of experience in the gaming industry and participation in at least three high-quality, high-budget games.
• A major cable network in California was seeking an animation director to design and review storyboards as well as meet with production coordinators and supervisors. Drawing experience, a bachelor's in fine arts, five years of television experience and 2-3 years of storyboard management experience were required.
• Another major cable network in California called for an animation director with a physical or online portfolio, a bachelor's degree in fine arts and television/storyboard direction experience as well as experience with character layout.

Animation director positions were projected to decline in the print publication industry; however, new positions should be available with online publications. Thus, you might increase your chances of employment by honing your Web design skills. Another potentially lucrative field in which to specialize is advertising; the BLS reported that this industry was projected to have the strongest growth among art directors. Incorporating courses in advertising into your curriculum during college could be beneficial.

Animation Professor

As a postsecondary animation professor, you might work at a college, university, community college or technical school. In addition to teaching students 3D modeling, storyboard development and other animation topics, you might conduct research and complete 3D animation projects of your own. Communication with students, administration, other faculty members, motion graphics companies and animation professionals might be necessary.

Although a doctoral degree in visual arts, animation or a similar field is often required for a career as a postsecondary animation teacher, you might be able to obtain employment at a 2-year college with a master's degree. As is the case for animators and art directors, potential employers often require demonstrable skills and a strong portfolio.

In December 2012, these postsecondary teaching positions were posted online:

• An art institute in New York City was hiring a part-time 3D animation and modeling instructor with at least a master's degree and 0-2 years of experience.
• In Virginia, another art institute sought a part-time animation instructor with a master's degree.
• A creative media institute in New Mexico sought a 3D animation instructor for a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track position. A Bachelor of Fine Arts or similar degree was required along with teaching and advising experience.

A solid way to bolster your resume and stand out as a postsecondary 3D animation teacher is to get published. If you're earning a PhD in the field, you might try to have your research findings published in a peer-reviewed academic, film, tech or art journal.

So what does an animation designer actually do ? Animation designers add motion to UI elements to enhance the interactivity of a digital product. It’s important to have engaging, interactive visuals to create a memorable user experience, guide the user, and help them navigate an interface. 

Animation designers create drawings that will eventually come together in a full-fledged animation. They also brainstorm concepts with teammates, transform their static drawings into digital animations, draft storyboards, and more. Streaming services are on the rise across all platforms from Netflix to Facebook, Twitter to Twitch, Amazon to Hulu, and even Youtube. According to Cision , “Streaming video is the fastest growing distribution channel for animation and is witnessing double digit growth which is expected to continue.”

Special effects alone make up 20-25% of all production costs . Globally, the animation, visual effects, and video games industry was valued at $261 billion in 2020. Almost every segment of this industry is growing by about 3% year over year. 

What does this mean for animation careers? Employment of animators is projected to grow 4% from 2019 to 2029 in the United States , which is average for all occupations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects an increased demand for animation and visual effects in video games, movies, and television. There were 67,500 open jobs in the U.S. for animation designers in the past year. 

3. Animation designer salary by country

United states.

• Average: $78,914

The United States has seven major animation hubs . New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago are the most prominent of these and feature massive studios including Nickelodeon, Disney, and Warner Brothers, respectively. San Francisco and Seattle are home to Lucasfilm, Pixar, EA, DreamWorks, Nintendo. Austin and Boston are hubs for 3D animation and visual effects. 

United Kingdom

• Average: £40,096

London is one of the top cities worldwide for animation designers. It’s home to the BBC and other studios including London Animation Club, Aardman Animations, Chapman Entertainment, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the Moving Picture Company, Cosgrove Hall Fitzpatrick, Studio AKA, and dozens more.

Hamburg is a big city for video games. It houses 49 Games, Bigpoint, Bytro Labs, Candygun Games, Daedalic Entertainment, DTP, Eidos Interactive, Exit Games, Fishlabs Entertainment, FXLAB, gamecity Hamburg, Gamigo, GIANTS Software, Goodgame Studios, InnoGames, and many others. Hamburg offers industry committees and maintains a tight community of animators. They even give away an annual animation award!

Toronto and Montreal both have strong animation presences. Toronto has just about every type of animation with 9 Story Media Group, ACME Pictures, AIC Studios, SPIN VFX, Squeeze Animation Studio, Tendril Design and Animation, and Twisted Frame. Montreal  is home to BarXseven, Big Bang Digital Studios, BUF, Designorganik, Digital Griffix, Di-O-Matic, Flip-Animation, and ToonBoom

Shanghai is a video game hub with big names like 2K Games China, CCP Games, DeNA China, EA Shanghai, Epic Games China, Gamestar (Disney Interactive), Hands-On Mobile, Ncsoft China, PopCap Games, Radiance Digital Entertainment, Red 5 Studios, Red Rocket Games, Shanda Interactive, SOCO SOFT, Softstar Entertainment, Spicy Horse, Spil Games Asia, The 9, TipCat Interactive, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ultizen Games, Virtuos, WEBEZEN China and Wemade Entertainment. Beijing, Chengdu, Wuxi, and Xiamen are also home to special effects and film studios. 

4. Animation designer salaries by company

Major studios set the pace for salaries in most industries. You might be excited to work for a specific studio or maybe you’re looking to gauge how much you could make as an animation designer. 

Your salary will depend on where you live, what company you work for, how senior your role is, your talent, and the sector you’re working in. Major studios, visual effects artists, and video game companies tend to pay the most. Tech companies hiring animation designers will also usually offer a sizable salary. 

Warner Brothers

Warner Brothers is an established studio that can be a great place to start for new animation designers. Senior designers make above average in the industry, while entry level positions are average. They’re known for being the “studio of the working class” and for focusing on the personalities of their characters above appearances.    

Nickelodeon

Nickelodeon is geared toward the 2-15 year old demographic with a blend of current events, game shows, music, and comedy. Owned by Viacom, Nickelodeon has great reviews from employees and is known for work life balance. They work with a lot of freelancers, some of whom earn full-time titles after their contract ends. 

Disney is a massive organization that employs animators in every sector of their business from movies to games, theme park experiences to web and mobile applications. They serve nearly every age group in some way so you aren’t limited with this company to who you could be creating for. Most Disney employees note that work life balance can be hard to maintain but that the benefits are amazing and it’s worth the sacrifice to work for this prestigious company. 

Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures Animation division is known for their innovative solutions in film. Their proprietary color management tool, OpenColorIO, was used for the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This studio has been pushing more of their films to streaming platforms like Netflix and seems to be ready to pivot more quickly than some major studios.

Ubisoft is a highly rated company to work for. They are one of the only employers of animators that boasts a truly balanced work life. Entry-level animation designers can often get employed during busy seasons temporarily and may be able to stay full-time after their contract. It’s a great place to start for a new animation designer. 

5. How to negotiate your first animation designer salary

Navigating your first salary can be a bit scary! But there is logic and business tactics behind every salary that you can rely on to get the best outcome for yourself as possible. Usually, there is a range already budgeted for the position you’re applying for. Sometimes they’re listed on the job posting but usually they’re not. Studios rarely offer the higher end of this salary range so it is a good rule of thumb to ask for 10% more. 

Before you begin negotiating, though, you should establish a minimum salary floor so you know what you can comfortably negotiate.  

If the initial offer is below your minimum salary, you should tell them that but don’t let them know by how much. Let them repitch a new offer before you continue negotiating. There is no need to justify your response that their offer is too low, simply allow them to come back to you with another offer. 

Negotiating your salary is about more than just the numbers. It’s about confidence and having the proper mindset. Here are some other tips that might make your negotiations go more smoothly. 

Shift into a business mindset

It helps to do some research and reflection before you begin negotiating your salary. Research what the market rates are, what competitors are paying, and what you would need to make to live in your area comfortably. 

You should also reflect on yourself and consider these questions so that you can be confident in your request: 

• How might you help them make more money? Are you efficient, knowledgeable about relevant tools, or have important skills?
• What are your unique selling points? What sets you apart from other applicants?
• How will you as an animation designer help the company? 
• Do you have any evidence to support these points from your past experiences, bootcamp instructors, or peers you’ve worked with on projects?

Stay strong

You can be more confident in your negotiations if you know that the company wants to hire you, so it helps to wait to negotiate the salary until after you’ve completed the entire interview process when possib. If the application asks for your salary range, leave it blank or avoid the question by something something like, “I will consider any fair or competitive offer.” If the interviewer asks what salary you expect before making an offer you can ask, “What’s budgeted for this position?” 

Don’t be afraid to state your desired salary with confidence. You shouldn’t pose it as a question. A company’s first reaction to your counter offer will often be “no.” That doesn’t mean you can’t get the job, it just means you might have to justify your counter-offer and explain how the company will benefit from hiring you. 

Remember that research you did? You can always walk back your offer a bit to find a happy medium between their original offer and your counter-offer if you feel comfortable.

Lean on your community

If you can, ask other animation designers about their salaries and career experiences. It might feel uncomfortable at first to ask about something taboo like pay rates, but you’ll probably be surprised at the openness of other animators. 

Teachers, mentors, and former classmates can also be good resources for advice. If you don’t know anyone that you feel comfortable asking, you can turn to Glassdoor, Facebook, Reddit, or LinkedIn for honest reviews of companies and salaries offered there.

If you’re looking for a top Animation MFA program in the U.S., you won’t have any trouble finding a variety of options. UCLA, SCAD, and RIT are just a few. If you’re interested in Animation PhD programs? Well, let’s just say your search will be a bit more challenging. True, USC’s School of Cinematic Arts offers an excellent option—the PhD in Cinematic Arts. But if you want to earn a PhD that focuses on animation, you’ll have to find a school that is willing to customize its PhD program in art, design or other similar area to suit your goals. If you can’t find a suitable option, that’s OK. America’s strongest ally has you covered. Just head to the UK! 

The UK is one of the easiest and most popular places to study abroad today. American students don’t have to worry about learning another language, and travel within the UK and to neighboring countries is affordable and convenient. 1. Arts University of Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset, UK  

Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is a specialist institution offering degrees in the areas of art, design, media, and performance. Home to more than 3,000 students, AUB is one of a small number of UK colleges dedicated solely to the study of art, design, media and performance.

Students seeking the highest degree levels in animation have two options—the MPhil or PhD. The programs consist of the following unique research groups: Animation, Creative Pedagogies, Fashion and Textiles, and Plastics in Art and Design. AUB research degrees are awarded through a partnership with the University of the Arts London. 

Note that for the 2013-2014 school year, at 97.4 percent, AUB had the highest percentage of graduates entering employment and/or further study within six months of graduation out of all universities in the UK. 

2. Loughborough University, Loughborough, UK  

Loughborough University is home to some 17,600 students from over 100 different countries. The school houses the School of the Arts, English and Drama, which offers Fine Art, English, Drama, Graphic Communication & Illustration, Publishing, and Textiles programs at all degree levels. The MPhil/PhD program is home to the Animation Academy—a “center for animation research, scholarship, practice and exhibition, embracing tradition and progress, education and industry, art and commerce; and dedicated to excellence at a national and international level in all its activities.” Students in the program may choose to study with one of the following research groups: Animation Academy, Drawing and Visualization, or Digital Humanities. 

Film, Photography and Digital Media are other options. Programs lead to an MPhil or PhD in Art and Design. 

3. Royal College of Art, London, UK  

The Royal College of Art (RCA) is the “world's only wholly postgraduate art and design school.” The school, which is home to around 800 students from over 60 countries, offers 24 programs through six integral schools. The six schools focus on architecture, design, fine art, humanities, communication and material. Graduates of these schools (more than 93 percent) are professionally active in art and design five years after graduation. 

Per the School of Communication, “the Animation, Information Experience Design and Visual Communication programs welcome applications for research degrees study in relevant areas of communication research.” Students in all research areas have full access to the School’s specialist workshops (digital print, animation, moving image, sound, letterpress) and labs (information experience design, animation, visual communication) to produce and present their practical work. The programs lead to an MPhil or PhD. 

4. University of the Arts London, London, UK  

University of the Arts London (UAL) is made up of six colleges including Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, and Wimbledon College of Arts. Across all six schools, UAL offers the MPhil or PhD with the option to conduct research in subject areas in art, design, and communication. A few current subjects include Animation, Interactive, Film and Sound, Theater, Screen, and Performance Design, Fine Art, and Communication and Graphic Design. Specific research degrees have been awarded in Animation and Moving Image and Interactive and Sound Arts.  

5. University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, UK  

The University of Kent is home to more than 20,000 students from 148 nationalities. The school has seven locations including Canterbury, (main campus), Medway, and Tonbridge, UK; Brussels, Belgium; Paris, France; Athens, Greece, and Rome, Italy. Three faculties (Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences) comprise 18 academic schools and three academic centers. The School of Engineering and Digital Arts is home to the Digital Media Group. 

Per the School, in the area of time-based media, the Group has substantial interest in “digital film capture and editing and manipulation on to fully animated 3D modelling techniques” such as those used “in games and feature films.” Research Themes include Computer Animation and Digital Visual Effects, Digital Arts, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Social Computing, Mobile Application Design and Development, E-Learning Technology, and Medical Multimedia Applications and Telemedicine. The program is available at the Canterbury campus. 

6. Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK  

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) consists four main campuses including Cambridge, Chelmsford, London, and Peterborough, UK. With 35,000 students, the school is one of the largest universities in the East of England. ARU offers hundreds of programs in areas from art and design to social sciences and humanities. Programs are offered at all degree levels.  

Advanced animation students typically choose the MPhil or PhD in Computer Science, which covers animation, image manipulation, video systems, virtual worlds, gaming, 2D and 3D modelling, cloud computing, AI, audio applications, satellite technology, internet technologies and mobile media technology. The program is available at the school’s campus in Cambridge, “one of the UK’s premier science and technology cities.” 

7. University College of London, London, UK  

In 1826, University College of London (UCL) became the first university in England to welcome students of any class or religion, and the first to welcome women on equal terms with men. Today, the school is home to 38,000 students from 150 different countries. UCL offers programs in all subject areas leading to a BA, BSc, LLB, MEng, MA, MSc, PGCE, MPhil or PhD. 

Animators who would like to earn one of the highest degrees in the field choose the MPhil or PhD in Culture, Communication and Media. Past research areas have included Young People’s Production of Digital Animation, Film and Computer Games, Virtual Worlds, Moving Image and Video Games, Online Communities, and Play and Film, to name a few.  

8. Goldsmiths, University of London, London, UK  

Goldsmiths, University of London offers programs in the arts, humanities, social sciences, cultural studies, computing, business and management, across 20 academic departments. Home to more than 8,500 students, the school offers the MPhil and PhD in Media Communications (MC). Students are encouraged to submit a proposal for Animation Research or other related area. The MC Department consists of a team of industry professionals active in Animation, TV, Film, Journalism, and Radio. 

Students will research individually or under supervision. Related degree options include the MPhil or PhD in Arts & Computational Technology and Intelligent Games & Game Intelligence. 

9. Falmouth University, Falmouth and Penryn, Cornwall, England UK  

According to the Falmouth University website, this art and design school has been the UK’s number one arts university for three years. In addition, the school says that 97 percent of graduates are working or involved in further study just six months after graduating. 

Falmouth U consists of 10 schools ranging from Architecture, Design & Interiors to the Games Academy. The School of Film & Television is home to the Animation Program. Advanced animation students seeking the highest degree typically choose the MPhil or PhD Research Program. The programs accept applications for interdisciplinary research in any art, design, media, performing arts or writing subject areas. 

10. Birmingham City University, Birmingham, England, UK  

Birmingham City University (BCU) is home to the Birmingham School of Art, which invites applicants to submit proposals for Art and Design PhD research within areas such as Art History, Education and Design Practice; Research in Art, Dissemination, Impact; Speculative Topologies of Art-design Practices, Radical Matter in Art & Philosophy, Center for Chinese Visual Arts, and others. Once accepted, students will become members of the research culture in Art and Design at BCU that includes CFAR (Centre for Fine Art Research) at the Birmingham School of Art, the Typographic Hub, Design Business Innovation Lab, Zero Carbon Lab, the Fashion & Textiles Research Group, and others. 

Per BCU, students will “attend regular research seminars, conferences and symposia and will receive a dedicated workspace that acts as the hub of their PhD research activity.” They may also strengthen their PhD research and professional/personal development by “participating in wider international research communities and conferences, and by helping to teach degree modules to undergraduate students.”
