  • Where you first met him/her
  • Why you met him/her
  • and explain why you think this person is interesting.

Sample Answer

So today I would like to tell you about a man who I really admire.

His name is Patrick, a French man living in Bordeaux, where I used to live during my time in France for  a postgraduate course . He lives in a four-generation-old villa in Salleboeuf,  the suburb  of Bordeaux metropolis.

I first met him in a night bar in the city center. I was there alone, chilling with a beer in hand when Patrick came over and said “Bonsoir mon cher”. That’s how French people  break the ice . I was a bit surprised but quickly I regained my  composure  and replied to him cautiously. A few moments later, my mind slowly got more relaxed as my  intuition  told me he was a good guy. A couple of days later I had a chance to stay overnight in his villa where he lives with his husband, Geralt. They were both so gentle and  hospitable  that I quickly felt like being home whenever I visited them. At first, I was scared if they would harm me for whatever reason but later I found that I was wrong as things turned out to be the opposite. These two men are the best friends I ever made in France.

Talking about the reasons why I greatly admire Patrick, I would say firstly he is as  courteous  and romantic as  a typical French gentleman . Besides, he is also  a tactful man  with incredible culinary skills. Whenever I stayed over, I had a chance to taste his  made-from-heart dishes  which are now unforgettable to me. Last but not least, he is a man of emotions. On my last day, he and Geralt woke up really early and sent me to the airport in their car. It was such a  heartbreaking moment  when we gave each other the last hugs in tears and he said he and Geralt would try their best to fly over to Vietnam for a trip to see me.

That is all I would like to tell you about. You know whenever I talk about Patrick, I always feel warm and happy in my heart. Hopefully, we will meet again soon.

Sample answer Part 3

3.1. what benefits of knowing a foreign person.

When being friends with a foreigner, we have a great chance to practice our language skills with them. In fact, as they do not know our mother tongue, we are placed in a situation where we must use the language that we both understand and that’s how we improve our language speaking flexibility. For that reason, I have got loads of friends from all corners of the world.

3.2. What are the required skills of a multinational company’s employees?

To be accepted in an international organization, there are certain skills required, but the most important ones to me are these following competencies:

First and foremost, it’s the language skills. To be precise, it’s usually English at top priority before any secondary languages as English has proved its influence all over the world to be the common language in work and cooperation.

Second, we should consider teamwork skills because for a big firm, moving forwards is like driving a giant ship in which each individual is a paddle that pushes the ship to advance. Without good teamwork spirits, the company would sooner or later collapse.

Last but not least, regarding individual aspects, each employee should learn logical thinking skills and avoid using emotions when seeking solutions to any work-related problems. When facing obstacles, individuals should start asking themselves constructive questions to know the issues deeply so that solutions can step by step reveal itself in their mind without any emotional interference.

3.3. Is it difficult to work at a multinational company?

Yes, of course, because in such a company we have to inevitably deal with colleagues from many cultural backgrounds, which means they also present behavioral differences according to the country they are from. This is a skill that, unfortunately, is not taught in our school but we have to learn as a hard lesson. But anyway, I think once we are used to such a multicultural workplace, our work will be processed even more smoothly than usual.

3.4. Is it important to know about a country before you go there?

Yes, I believe this is good advice for anyone thinking of moving to another country either to settle down or travel. Having sufficient information about a country will help to avoid cultural shocks or offending the locals unintentionally as well as to reduce the risk of losing money or coping up with some petty crimes like pickpockets, snatchers for travelers.

Paragraph on an Interesting Person – by Shanu

an interesting person i know short essay

It is a word of wisdom, yet it is nothing but the same old thing new. You have most likely known from the earliest starting point that having the capacity to investment peruses is a vital piece of developing a prevalent web journal.

It is clear that nobody is going to stay around unless you discover your web journal intriguing.

It is great when you meet an interesting person anywhere, and want to know more and talk more about or to him/her.

In any case, how are you expected to do it precisely? By what means would you be able to “be intriguing? Substantially excessively of what we expound on consideration and investment is conceptual. We discuss separation, esteem, and triggers – all valuable ideas, however you cannot indicate them.

The interesting person:

ADVERTISEMENTS:

There is one person who I know I could not live without and consequently is the most imperative person in my life. This person will do anything she can for me, provides for me radiant guidance, and has taught me a great deal about existence and that is what makes her an interesting person for me. You find a person interesting when we do not have good or best friends of ours. We find people interesting by their looks and all that they talk about.

What is interesting?

A fascinating person ought to have heaps of interests in his cerebrum, and he ought to have an inquisitive trademark. So the descriptive word “fascinating” appears to be the best word to depict me, there is no other better word. The majority of my old companions know I am a person who has heaps of interests and joy. In every essential gathering, I am constantly welcomed to be the joker. Consequently, I accept that I am the most intriguing person I know. Fascinating things were not interesting to me when I was junior

Interesting person I know:

I can think about one person; notwithstanding, who has affected my life in the best way is my companion Gina. For the two years that I have known her, other than turning into one of my closest companions, she figured out how to make me re-examine my qualities, the way I view myself, and the way I see life largely.

Describe an Interesting Person

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 5, 2021 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 0

Describe an Interesting Person

In the IELTS speaking test, for part 2, you might be asked to describe a person. There are many different types of people you could be asked to talk about, including a polite person , a famous person , a sportsperson , a friend , and so on. Today, however, I am going to show you how to describe an interesting person .

The Cue Card: Describe an Interesting Person

First of all, it is important to note that you cannot predict future cue cards, but it is worth preparing for the future by looking at past ones. However, be careful because they will not necessarily be repeated with the same exact wording.

When it comes to IELTS cue cards about describing an interesting person, you could be given one that is subtly different to those you have practised with in the past.

describe an interesting person

For example, you could be asked to describe an interesting person you know or describe an interesting person you have met . Whilst these may seem basically the same, knowing someone and having met someone are actually quite different and would require different answers.

Similarly, there are cue cards that ask you to describe an interesting person you would like to meet and those that ask you to describe an interesting person from another country . Clearly, you would need to fixate upon the parts that differentiate these, so read carefully and don’t jump to conclusions.

Today, we are going to explore this cue card:

Describe an interesting person you know. You should say: – what sort of person he/she is – how you first met him/her – what he/she does for a living and explain why you think this person is so interesting.

How to Describe an Interesting Person

If you want to describe any kind of person, you need to have a good grasp of vocabulary. That is because talking about people requires specific language to discuss specific points of their personality or lifestyle. Subtle differences in word choice can present big differences in meaning.

When it comes to describing an interesting person, the language that you choose will be to a great extent impacted by the person’s job, personality, and so on. Thus, it is hard to give a set of specific words or phrases that you could use.

However, you might want to learn some words that relate to different aspects of a person’s life:

For me, though, describing an interesting person is going to involve not just objective descriptions of a person’s appearance, lifestyle, and personality, but stories .

As I have said before, and discuss the video below, it is much easier to give engaging and detailed answers when you start with a personal aspect, tell stories, and bring the answer to a natural close.

After you are given your cue card, you will have one minute to prepare an answer. You won’t have much time to write anything, but you might want to note down some ideas or vocabulary that could help you later.

When I give sample answers, I tend to quickly write down an important idea (using just one or two words) that I want to mention later in my speech. This will help me to remember it and it also helps calm your nerves because knowing that you have this thing to talk about later stops you from panicking at the thought of your mind going blank.

Just remember: Don’t try to write a whole sentence or even a chunk of a sentence or else you will totally waste your time! After analysing the cue card, picking an idea, and then thinking of things to talk about, you’ve got just a fraction of that one minute left and it’s better to use that time to think of a good starting point.

Below is my sample answer to the cue card: describe an interesting person you know.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Years ago, I became acquainted with a man through Facebook. He was a friend of a friend, and I don’t normally add people like that, but he seemed quite interesting and was also a little famous, so I added him and we chatted a bit. Much to my surprise, he was quite interested in my business, and so we talked about that, and over the years we got to know each other in the digital sense before finally we met when I travelled to America and spent some time in his hometown.

I could tell before I met him in person that Paul was an odd guy by most standards. He is a poet and has lived a life on the fringes of society, more interested in art than anything conventional. He often puts on big events that feature poetry, music, and painting, and he has travelled the world meeting all kinds of famous people. Though he is not the sort to brag about it, he quietly told me some of his stories and I was amazed by the experiences he had had in his life.

Paul is one of those rare folks that you just don’t meet very often in this world. Whilst there are lots of strange people, few of them have his talent, intelligence, and kindness. It is a brilliant mix that made him into a person I am proud to call a friend and certainly one of, if not the, most interesting person that I know.

Notes on the Answer

As usual, I began this answer with a personal story – a memory of meeting Paul. It was a brief sentence but allowed me to start logically and naturally, so that I could talk without having to think too much about the structure of my answer. Likewise, when I felt I had said enough, I brought it to a natural conclusion, with a final sentence that tied everything together. My answer also loosely followed the structure suggested on the cue card, though I did shift a few things about for the sake of a better logical flow of ideas.

In terms of language, it was obviously specific to the person I discussed and your answer should similarly be specific to your chosen person. However, here are some words and phrases that I used that might be applicable to others:

  • I became acquainted with___
  • He was a friend of a friend
  • Much to my surprise, he was___
  • over the years we got to know each other in the digital sense
  • has lived a life on the fringes of society
  • I was amazed by the experiences he had had in his life
  • one of those rare folks
  • few (people) have his talent, intelligence, and kindness

Cue Card 292 – Describe an interesting person you have met recently

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe an interesting person you have met recently.

You should say:

  • who this person is
  • what he/she does
  • how you met him/ her

and explain why this person is so interesting.

Model Answer 1: We meet new people often in our life. Needless to say, they all can be interesting and fascinating in their unique ways even though we may not always understand or recognise them the way we ought to. But, today I would like to talk about one person, whom I recently met, and who I did recognise to be an interesting and captivating person.

The interesting person, I am talking about, is a fitness trainer and also a sportsperson. His name is Antonio, and I met him at a local gym about a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, when I met Antonio for the first time, I didn’t really think that he could be such an intelligent and environment-friendly person. But, I was proved wrong when he gave me a long talk about how we were destroying the mother earth by indiscriminately using (he used the word “abusing”) its resources in order to feed our greed. Apart from providing fitness training to people like us, he also likes to play basketball. Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that Antonio likes to read different kinds of books and learn from them.

In fact, I have seen him reading all kinds of interesting books in between his fitness training sessions. Besides, he also likes to help little children learn about different kinds of physical exercises by visiting them at their schools every once in a while. By the way, he also told me that had been maintaining the same health routine for the last 15 years or so after finishing his university studies. Truly remarkable, isn’t it?

Anyway, I find Antonio to be so interesting because I have felt that even though he seems to have all kinds of resources at his disposal to be someone famous and rich, he didn’t choose that route, simply because he doesn’t like to find happiness in wealth and fame. Instead, he just likes to enjoy his life by doing what he enjoys the most. Besides, even though, he may seem tough from outside, he actually is a very gentle person who cares a lot about the world and people around him.

Model Answer 2: Mr. Robert Neil (..or say a name you like…) is an interesting person whom I met a few months ago. He lives a few blocks away from our home and has recently moved to our locality from a different city. He has a family with 4 members and he is an engineering graduate and has worked as a chief engineer in many reputed organisations as he told me. In his early 40’s he took self-retirement and now enjoys his time either in developing some mysterious engineering and scientific tools or by travelling to different places of the world.

It’s pretty tough to say whether he is planning to visit a new country or has recently come from one if someone meets him. He mostly wears outdated clothes and has long beard with a strange look in his eyes. To my surprise, I found my conversation with him very interesting as he likes to talk about his plan to invent something very important to change the world. I am not sure what he is up to but it seems very thought-provoking to learn that he really believes that. He travels to hills and forests mostly to stay close to nature as he describes this habit to be helpful for idea generation. People often look at him very strangely and do some small talks about his attitude but I find him to be an interesting person. To my surprise, he is a very devoted and a doting father and husband and has a good flow of money even though he does not have a full-time job now.

I met him all of a sudden and that was interesting as well. One day he knocked on my door and I opened it. He came to our house and asked whether I can give him some copper or not. I was pretty perplexed with his sudden appearance and demand for the copper. He told me that he was doing an important experiment and he needs this to carry out his test. I apologised that we do not have any copper to offer him and advised him to visit the nearby shopping complex where he might find it. He returned back after an hour with some bags and thanked me for letting him know where he might find the copper he was looking for. He then offered to visit his house and have dinner with him. The whole confrontation took me by surprise and I understood from that very day that he was bit unusual and interesting in nature.

Your ability to talk about this Cue Card would enable you to talk about the following Cue Card Topics as well:

  • Describe a neighbour from your locality.
  • Describe a person whom you met all off a sudden.

Describe a song that has a special meaning to you

Describe an interesting person you met recently

# describe an interesting person you met recently.

  • You should say:
  • Who the person was
  • When and where you met the person
  • What you did together

The interesting person I met recently is my roommate, who moved in to live with me a week ago. She, newly graduated, is nice and talkative. The minute after she was introduced to me by the landlady, she began to tell me everything about herself, as if we’ve known for a long time. The past week living with her was full of unexpectedness and quite interesting.

Every day she’d like to share her experience which made me laughed to tears. Sometimes, she begged me to do something crazy, crazy to me, which she came up with at midnight. Optimistic as she is, she makes me feel that life is not so hard, and I can enjoy a better, happier day as I like it.

I usually make supper by myself and she prefers to eat takeaway at the table while I am eating. Meanwhile, she would tell me funny things she’d come across on the day. For example, on the first day, she got to the wrong bus, as she was not used to the new route. Not until half an hour later did she realize that and she had to take a taxi so as not to be late. What’s more, she got off at the wrong station, and she had to walk for twenty minutes to return home.

I was sorry for her terrible day, and I would definitely in a bad mood if I had had a day like that. However, she was more amused about her experience and seemed to be telling a funny story of others’. Then last Saturday, we were enjoying a film together at night, which didn’t finish until eleven thirty.

Five minutes later after she went back to her room, she knocked at my door, asking me if I’d like to go out to eat barbecue, since there are barbecue stalls in the street opposite our community, which I mentioned forward to her that day. I’ve been living in the community for two years, however, I never went to the street at midnight. I had to accompany her there for she kept begging me.

I cannot imagine what she will share and do with me in the future, but I am sure it’s interesting to live with a roommate like her.

Question: What do you think are important between friends? To be friends, the two need to be sincere with each other. As the saying goes, to make a friend, one needs to be friendly. They should care about each other so as to offer in time help when needed. Besides, they should trust each other, otherwise, their friendship won’t last long.

Question: How do people nowadays make friends? There are ways for people to make friends, through their recent friends, or by taking part in activities, hiking for example. Besides, some make friends with those they cooperate with while playing online games. Currently, more tend to make friends online and chat with each other through QQ or EMS, as they feel free to complain about their sadness online and can make friends in all works of life.

Question: How to avoid making friends who are not sincere online? People should protect themselves and shouldn’t share their personal information like income, name, and address online or during their chatting. In case someone evil may deliberately make friends and win the trust of his target, and then he takes advantage of what they get through former chatting, to commence crime, such as kidnapping children of his target for money.

Question: Will you tell others you meet for the first time your personal information, like your telephone number or your address? I won’t tell the guys I meet for the first time much personal information. For example, on an hours’ bus riding, I may have a conversation with a fellow traveler to kill time, talking about our hometowns and jobs. If asked for further contact, I may leave a telephone number. But I won’t tell him my working or living address or further information, as I can’t completely judge whether the guy is reliable.

Question: Does the first impression count on your making friends? Yes, though I never make friends on the first meet, the first impression of meeting with a person will influence our further contact at the beginning. If a person leaves a good impression on me, I will be polite to him/ her. Otherwise, the prejudice I have may stop me from being warm-hearted and friendly. But I believe it takes time to know clearly about a person.

Question:: Do you talk about different things with male and female friends? Of course, I share different things with them. I am a girl. With my girlfriends, we always talk about things related to our life, such as dresses in fashion, the cosmetics we use or experience of love affairs. While with boyfriends, we often about our work, sharing the happiness of success and offering suggestions to problems we recently met on work.

Question: What is the standard of making friends? Will the standard change in the future? People have a different standard of making friends. Some believe that a person shares the same interest with them is necessary, as they can always have something to talk about together. Some would like to make friends doing the same or similar job, for they can learn from each other. Others want to make friends with wealthy people or men of power, whom they can turn to for help. The standard surely will change in the future, as people are in need of different friends in a certain stage.

Question: Who, friends or family, will have bigger influences on the character of a child? The family has a bigger influence on a child. A child relies on family since his birth. At the very beginning, the family is the whole world for him, from whom he learns the basic skills and ethics for living. Then a child, gradually, will be influenced by his friends, as peers, they may encounter the same problems and share their opinions. What a child learns from the words and behaviors of his parents in his youth, however, will determine his character and future development.

Question: Do children have the ability to tell what is right and wrong? Children, with little experience of social life and common sense, are not able to judge what is right or wrong. For example, they are not clear why they are allowed to pick up flowers in the park as they do at home in their gardens until their parents tell them they have no right to possess a public property which is owned by all people. They gather and try out social experience on their growth.

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

4-minute read

  • 7th January 2023

Describing a person or character is difficult for even the most successful authors. It requires a balance of words to make sure they shine through without the language being too heavy. In this article, we’ll look at how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person, share some examples, and talk about different strategies.

1.   Brainstorm Your Ideas

Brainstorming is crucial to any writing process. It’s the process in which you think of ideas for what you’d like to write about. In this case, you’re writing a descriptive paragraph about a person. It’s important to use adjectives to describe the features or characteristics you want to focus on.

One way to come up with ideas for a descriptive paragraph about a person is to go through the five senses. Use the questions below to get some ideas for what you want to highlight about your person.

Appeal to your reader’s senses – smell, taste, sound, sight, and touch

Smell: How does the person smell? Do they wear perfume? Are they doing an activity that would make them have a certain smell?

Taste: Do you associate a certain food with this person? Does it make you think of a specific taste? Can you taste something due to a certain smell they have?

Sound: Do they have a unique voice or laugh? Are they doing an activity that has distinctive sounds?

Sight: What prominent features do they have? For example, think about their dressing style, their smile, or their surroundings. What do you see them doing in your mind when you see a photo of them? What memories do you have of this person? Does this person remind you of something or someone?

Touch: What textures do you see? For example, imagine their skin or clothing. How does it feel if you hug them?

2.   Begin With a Short and Snappy Sentence

Like with any type of writing, you want to hook your reader so that they want to continue reading. In this case, you can use a topic sentence, if appropriate, to introduce your reader to the person. For example:

Or, if you want to be more creative, you can reel them in with a short and snappy sentence about this person. This is called a writing hook . This sentence should focus on a stand-out detail or characteristic about the person you’re describing. For example:

3.   Describe the Person

Now, this is the hard part. But, if you’ve brainstormed plenty of ideas and know which ones you want to focus on, it will be easier. Let’s look at some examples to get a better idea of how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person using the prompt “describe a person you admire.”

Comments: This paragraph is pretty typical of most students. It gives lots of visual details of the person and uses a simile or two (“ Her eyes are like the color of honey” and “Her smile shines like the sun” ). While this strategy gets the job done, it’s not very exciting to read. In fact, it can be quite boring!

Let’s look at how we can rewrite this to make it more exciting.

Comments: In this example, we focused on one defining characteristic of the person we are describing — her laugh. This strategy places more focus on the person you’re describing, rather than the adjectives you use to describe them.

4.   Edit and Revise

After you write your descriptive paragraph, be sure to read it over. Read it out loud. Read it in a funny voice. Doing this will help you to hear the words and identify which parts do not work or sound awkward.

5.   General Tips for Descriptive Writing

●  Avoid using too many descriptive words.

●  Remember to show the reader, not tell.

●  Appeal to the reader’s five senses – smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound.

●  Focus on a striking or defining characteristic.

●  Use contrasting details from other people or surroundings for emphasis.

●  Use literary devices (metaphors, similes etc.) sparingly and with intention.

●  Use a hook to reel your reader in.

●  Use a variety of short and long sentences.

●  Practice creative writing exercises to improve your descriptive writing skills.

●  Always edit and revise your writing.

Interesting Person

An interesting person should have lots of intrigues in his brain, and he should have a curious characteristic. So the adjective “interesting” seems to be the best word to describe me, there is no other better word. All of my old friends know I am a person who has lots of intrigues and happiness. In every important party, I am always invited to be the joker. For these reasons, I believe that I am the most interesting person I know. Interesting things were not strange to me when I was young.

I still remember when I in primary school, I always thought about the difference between boys and girls . The most interesting matter was that why boys and girls went to different restrooms, and what was the difference of the ‘equipment’ inside restrooms. This question was always running around in my brain. Once I asked my father about it, but it might because my father grew up in a traditional Chinese family in which no one could talk about sex, his answer was ” you will know when you get older! ” which made me frustrated.

Because I was extremely interested in this matter, so once I decided to switch the male-restroom card and the female-restroom card to see what would happen. The consequence was that no one knew how to use the ‘equipment’ in the switched restrooms. Finally, my class teacher who blamed me for tricking classmates told me about the differences between boys and girls. Till I entered high school, I still did not change my naughty characteristic. I have a very interesting experience to share with you: One time my brother drove me to school by his new Honda sports car, he drove faster by my request as I was going to be late.

He stepped on the gas deeply and the sports car activated its V-tech function, in not more than 5 seconds, the sports car reached sixty miles per hour on the road supposed to drive thirty-five miles per hour at most. Unfortunately, we was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap hid somewhere on the road, and it measured our speed using radar and photographed our car. Two days later, I received a ticket for forty dollars and a photo of my brother’s car. Instead of payment, I sent the police department a photograph of forty dollars.

Several days later, my brother told me that he received a strange letter from the police department that contained a ticket for a hundred dollars and a photo of handcuffs. Surely, he did not know what I did. I am studying at college now, my characteristic still has not changed. My friends always don’t believe what I say and distrust what I do, because they think I am too tricky and interesting. A Chinese proverb says ” It is easy to change rivers and mountains but hard to change a person’s characteristic . ” Now I deeply believe that it is true .

How to Write an Essay About a Famous Person in History

Last Updated: December 13, 2022 Fact Checked

This article was co-authored by Emily Listmann, MA . Emily Listmann is a private tutor in San Carlos, California. She has worked as a Social Studies Teacher, Curriculum Coordinator, and an SAT Prep Teacher. She received her MA in Education from the Stanford Graduate School of Education in 2014. There are lots of things to think about when writing a paper about a famous person from history. Your teacher may have given you this assignment with exact instructions on who to write about and what information to include, or they may have just asked you to write about someone from history that you admire without telling you exactly what information to include. When writing the essay, take your time and rely on good information that you have collected from books and respected internet resources. Don’t underestimate the time you will need to edit your essay in order to have a final product that you can feel proud of.

Preparing to Write Your Essay

Step 1 Read the assignment carefully.

  • Should you choose your person or has one been assigned?
  • Does your teacher want you to use a citation style? For example, they may want you to use the MLA format or maybe they want you to use Chicago Style. [1] X Research source If your teacher says they don't care, then there's nothing to worry about, but make sure that you include a “References” page at the end of your essay. On this page, you should include all of the different websites, books, and/or magazines that you used to write the essay.
  • Is there a word limit? Does your teacher require a specific font or font size? Should you double-space the essay? If you're not sure, ask you teacher.

Step 2 Choose a person that did a lot in their life.

  • Try to think about the things you know the person has done. Did they live a pretty normal life, but did one really cool thing? A person who was more or less “normal” could be harder to write about if your teacher wants a ten page essay. For example, although Adolf Hitler was not in any way an admirable human being, writing a historical essay about his life would be pretty easy because he did a lot of different things.
  • On the other hand, if there is a historical figure you are really interested in, you will have a good time researching and writing about your person whether they led very busy lives or not. The most important thing is to choose someone you find fascinating. Try making a list of your hobbies and interests and then run a Google search to find famous people who also had one of these hobbies or interests.
  • 3 Brainstorm a list of questions. Write down all of the questions you want to answer about your person. If your teacher told you what questions to answer, then use those. If your teacher did not, then this is up to you. Make sure you talk about when and where they were born, whether they had a good childhood or not, what makes them special and interesting, what they accomplished (whether good or bad), and why you find them interesting. [2] X Trustworthy Source University of North Carolina Writing Center UNC's on-campus and online instructional service that provides assistance to students, faculty, and others during the writing process Go to source

Step 4 Research the questions you want to answer in your essay.

  • Write down anything you find interesting and want to include. At the same time that you do this, write down the source of that information. For example, the name and author of the book or the address of the website.
  • If you are having a hard time finding information about your person in the library, ask the librarian to help you search. They’re there to help you, and may have ways of finding information that you hadn’t thought of. Plus, if you find the information through the library, there is a better chance that you will find high quality information.
  • Make sure that you understand what is considered an acceptable source of information by your teacher. For example, some teachers may consider it OK to use websites such as Wikipedia, while other teachers may not. If you’re not sure, just ask them.
  • Try to include at least one primary source that was written by the person you are researching, such as a letter, journal entry, or speech. This will help you get to know the person better than you would by only using secondary sources, such as articles and textbooks.

Step 5 Outline your essay.

  • Write your outline so that the information is in the same order that it will be in in the paper. For example, don't put questions about how the person died before the questions about where they were born and who their parents were.

Step 6 Review other essays.

  • Don’t plagiarize though! If you copy someone else's work without giving them credit for their work, this is called plagiarism. If you do find something interesting that you want to include, be sure to give credit to that person. Plagiarism is a big deal, so it’s best to learn early that it isn’t worth the risk.

Writing the Essay

Step 1 Start with the body of the essay.

  • In the body, you will write about all of the information that you found when you were researching. It is the part of the paper where you answer any and all questions you have come up with.
  • Your essay will be more clear if you separate different parts of this person’s life into paragraphs. For example, the first paragraph might start out by explaining when, where, and to whom this person was born. In this paragraph you might talk about what kind of childhood this person had, and whether they had any big experiences that made them into the person they were.
  • In later paragraphs, you can talk about what the person did that made them famous. You might also want to include interesting things that you found about this person’s personal life. For example, whether or not they got married or whether or not they suffered from any mental disorders.

Step 2 Write the conclusion.

  • Don't write more than one or two paragraphs for your conclusion. It should simply go over what you have written in the body about who this person was and why they were interesting and important.
  • For example, you might write, “In summary, Martin Luther King Jr. was a driven man who, although his life was tragically cut short, accomplished amazing things in his life. Though his upbringing presented many challenges, he went on to become a great man who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he believed in.”
  • In the next paragraph, you can summarize what you wrote about why you find him so interesting. For example, “This great man inspires me every time I read about him. I hope that I too can stand up for the right thing if I am ever in a position to do so, even if it is difficult or scary to do so.”

Step 3 Finish your first draft by writing the introduction.

  • For example, you can say, “In this essay, I will be discussing a man that nearly everyone has heard of. He was a minister who became famous during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s for standing up for the rights of not only African Americans, but for all human beings.”
  • After you introduce your person, you will state what you will be telling your reader about this person. For example, “In this essay, Martin Luther King Jr.’s life will be discussed beginning with his birth in Georgia, to his travels to Germany where he officially began to be known as ‘Martin,’ to his untimely death in 1968.”
  • Don’t give everything away in the introduction. Think of the introduction like a movie preview. You want to give enough information to get the reader interested, but not so much information that they will already know everything else written in the essay before they read it.

Step 4 Write a second draft.

  • Don’t expect the second draft to come out perfectly either. The purpose of the second draft is to fix up any major spelling mistakes or grammar errors, and to see how you feel about the information you’ve written now that it’s all out there.
  • A second draft is what you will give to anyone who has offered to proof read your essay, so make sure that it is easy to read. It is best to have this version typed and double-spaced so it will be easy for whoever is helping you to make notes on things you can improve in your final draft.

Editing Your Essay

Step 1 Ask someone to proofread your essay.

  • For example, a good proofreader might point out to you that your paragraph about the death of your person might be better if you put it before your paragraph which talks about the legacy this person left behind.
  • Try asking a classmate to read your essay. It's a win-win for both of you because you can offer to read their essay in return. Meet up a few days after reading to talk about errors and ways to make each of your papers better.
  • If the person has done a good job, they may have a lot of things to say about your paper. Try not to take anything bad they say about your paper personally. They're not trying to make you feel bad, they just want to help you get a good grade.
  • Give them a physical copy of the paper that is double-spaced. This will make it easy for them to make corrections and write notes on your paper.

Step 2 Proofread the essay on your own.

  • Make notes as you read in a bright colored pen on a physical copy of your paper.
  • Read your paper twice. The first time, focus on what you've written, and don't look for spelling mistakes or other grammar errors. While you're reading think about whether it is easy to follow and whether or not it makes sense. This will be the time to consider rearranging any information, adding anything extra, or removing anything that doesn't seem important.
  • Read through the article a second time to check for grammar and spelling issues. Mark any misspelled words or typos, and make a note of any awkward sentences that you want to go back and change.

Step 3 Read the essay backwards.

  • You should also read the essay out loud. Reading the essay out loud will help you find sentences that sound strange.

Step 4 Type your final draft.

  • Make sure to follow any instructions your teacher has given you about how to format the document. For example, with regard to font, font size, and line spacing.
  • By now, you should feel confident that you have a well-written paper. If you still feel unsure, you can ask a different person to read your essay to reassure yourself that you have caught any mistakes.
  • If your teacher said they don’t care about the formatting, then stick to the defaults of your word processing program. Generally, it is a good idea to stick to font size 12 and a standard font such as Times New Roman. To make your paper easier to read, consider changing the line spacing to 1.5 or 2, unless your teacher has said not to do this.
  • Your teacher probably expects you to turn in a typed copy of your essay. Unless your teacher has specifically asked for handwritten papers make sure you turn in a neat, typed copy.

If you do find something that someone else wrote and want to include it in your essay, then you can do this, but be sure to cite your sources in the format required by your teacher. Telling the Story of Yourself: 6 Steps to Writing Personal Narratives

Jennifer Xue

Jennifer Xue

writing personal narratives

Table of Contents

Why do we write personal narratives, 6 guidelines for writing personal narrative essays, inspiring personal narratives, examples of personal narrative essays, tell your story.

First off, you might be wondering: what is a personal narrative? In short, personal narratives are stories we tell about ourselves that focus on our growth, lessons learned, and reflections on our experiences.

From stories about inspirational figures we heard as children to any essay, article, or exercise where we're asked to express opinions on a situation, thing, or individual—personal narratives are everywhere.

According to Psychology Today, personal narratives allow authors to feel and release pains, while savouring moments of strength and resilience. Such emotions provide an avenue for both authors and readers to connect while supporting healing in the process.

That all sounds great. But when it comes to putting the words down on paper, we often end up with a list of experiences and no real structure to tie them together.

In this article, we'll discuss what a personal narrative essay is further, learn the 6 steps to writing one, and look at some examples of great personal narratives.

As readers, we're fascinated by memoirs, autobiographies, and long-form personal narrative articles, as they provide a glimpse into the authors' thought processes, ideas, and feelings. But you don't have to be writing your whole life story to create a personal narrative.

You might be a student writing an admissions essay , or be trying to tell your professional story in a cover letter. Regardless of your purpose, your narrative will focus on personal growth, reflections, and lessons.

Personal narratives help us connect with other people's stories due to their easy-to-digest format and because humans are empathising creatures.

We can better understand how others feel and think when we were told stories that allow us to see the world from their perspectives. The author's "I think" and "I feel" instantaneously become ours, as the brain doesn't know whether what we read is real or imaginary.

In her best-selling book Wired for Story, Lisa Cron explains that the human brain craves tales as it's hard-wired through evolution to learn what happens next. Since the brain doesn't know whether what you are reading is actual or not, we can register the moral of the story cognitively and affectively.

In academia, a narrative essay tells a story which is experiential, anecdotal, or personal. It allows the author to creatively express their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and opinions. Its length can be anywhere from a few paragraphs to hundreds of pages.

Outside of academia, personal narratives are known as a form of journalism or non-fiction works called "narrative journalism." Even highly prestigious publications like the New York Times and Time magazine have sections dedicated to personal narratives. The New Yorke is a magazine dedicated solely to this genre.

The New York Times holds personal narrative essay contests. The winners are selected because they:

had a clear narrative arc with a conflict and a main character who changed in some way. They artfully balanced the action of the story with reflection on what it meant to the writer. They took risks, like including dialogue or playing with punctuation, sentence structure and word choice to develop a strong voice. And, perhaps most important, they focused on a specific moment or theme – a conversation, a trip to the mall, a speech tournament, a hospital visit – instead of trying to sum up the writer’s life in 600 words.

In a nutshell, a personal narrative can cover any reflective and contemplative subject with a strong voice and a unique perspective, including uncommon private values. It's written in first person and the story encompasses a specific moment in time worthy of a discussion.

Writing a personal narrative essay involves both objectivity and subjectivity. You'll need to be objective enough to recognise the importance of an event or a situation to explore and write about. On the other hand, you must be subjective enough to inject private thoughts and feelings to make your point.

With personal narratives, you are both the muse and the creator – you have control over how your story is told. However, like any other type of writing, it comes with guidelines.

1. Write Your Personal Narrative as a Story

As a story, it must include an introduction, characters, plot, setting, climax, anti-climax (if any), and conclusion. Another way to approach it is by structuring it with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should set the tone, while the body should focus on the key point(s) you want to get across. The conclusion can tell the reader what lessons you have learned from the story you've just told.

2. Give Your Personal Narrative a Clear Purpose

Your narrative essay should reflect your unique perspective on life. This is a lot harder than it sounds. You need to establish your perspective, the key things you want your reader to take away, and your tone of voice. It's a good idea to have a set purpose in mind for the narrative before you start writing.

Let's say you want to write about how you manage depression without taking any medicine. This could go in any number of ways, but isolating a purpose will help you focus your writing and choose which stories to tell. Are you advocating for a holistic approach, or do you want to describe your emotional experience for people thinking of trying it?

Having this focus will allow you to put your own unique take on what you did (and didn't do, if applicable), what changed you, and the lessons learned along the way.

3. Show, Don't Tell

It's a narration, so the narrative should show readers what happened, instead of telling them. As well as being a storyteller, the author should take part as one of the characters. Keep this in mind when writing, as the way you shape your perspective can have a big impact on how your reader sees your overarching plot. Don't slip into just explaining everything that happened because it happened to you. Show your reader with action.

dialogue tags

You can check for instances of telling rather than showing with ProWritingAid. For example, instead of:

"You never let me do anything!" I cried disdainfully.
"You never let me do anything!" To this day, my mother swears that the glare I levelled at her as I spat those words out could have soured milk.

Using ProWritingAid will help you find these instances in your manuscript and edit them without spending hours trawling through your work yourself.

4. Use "I," But Don't Overuse It

You, the author, take ownership of the story, so the first person pronoun "I" is used throughout. However, you shouldn't overuse it, as it'd make it sound too self-centred and redundant.

ProWritingAid can also help you here – the Style Report will tell you if you've started too many sentences with "I", and show you how to introduce more variation in your writing.

5. Pay Attention to Tenses

Tense is key to understanding. Personal narratives mostly tell the story of events that happened in the past, so many authors choose to use the past tense. This helps separate out your current, narrating voice and your past self who you are narrating. If you're writing in the present tense, make sure that you keep it consistent throughout.

tenses in narratives

6. Make Your Conclusion Satisfying

Satisfy your readers by giving them an unforgettable closing scene. The body of the narration should build up the plot to climax. This doesn't have to be something incredible or shocking, just something that helps give an interesting take on your story.

The takeaways or the lessons learned should be written without lecturing. Whenever possible, continue to show rather than tell. Don't say what you learned, narrate what you do differently now. This will help the moral of your story shine through without being too preachy.

GoodReads is a great starting point for selecting read-worthy personal narrative books. Here are five of my favourites.

Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

Jane Yolen, the author of 386 books, wrote this poetic story about a daughter and her father who went owling. Instead of learning about owls, Yolen invites readers to contemplate the meaning of gentleness and hope.

Night by Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel was a teenager when he and his family were sent to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. This Holocaust memoir has a strong message that such horrific events should never be repeated.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

This classic is a must-read by young and old alike. It's a remarkable diary by a 13-year-old Jewish girl who hid inside a secret annexe of an old building during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in 1942.

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

This is a personal narrative written by a brave author renowned for her clarity, passion, and honesty. Didion shares how in December 2003, she lost her husband of 40 years to a massive heart attack and dealt with the acute illness of her only daughter. She speaks about grief, memories, illness, and hope.

Educated by Tara Westover

Author Tara Westover was raised by survivalist parents. She didn't go to school until 17 years of age, which later took her to Harvard and Cambridge. It's a story about the struggle for quest for knowledge and self-reinvention.

Narrative and personal narrative journalism are gaining more popularity these days. You can find distinguished personal narratives all over the web.

Curating the best of the best of personal narratives and narrative essays from all over the web. Some are award-winning articles.

Narratively

Long-form writing to celebrate humanity through storytelling. It publishes personal narrative essays written to provoke, inspire, and reflect, touching lesser-known and overlooked subjects.

Narrative Magazine

It publishes non, fiction narratives, poetry, and fiction. Among its contributors is Frank Conroy, the author of Stop-Time , a memoir that has never been out of print since 1967.

Thought Catalog

Aimed at Generation Z, it publishes personal narrative essays on self-improvement, family, friendship, romance, and others.

Personal narratives will continue to be popular as our brains are wired for stories. We love reading about others and telling stories of ourselves, as they bring satisfaction and a better understanding of the world around us.

Personal narratives make us better humans. Enjoy telling yours!

Sample Answer 1

I have many friends in college and I love having good times with them. But among them, there is one interesting friend of mine who is a captivating dancer and entertainer. She seems to be more enchanting than the other friends in my group. Her name is Prakriti Ghosh. She is from my department and studied the same course and same subjects.

She is very chilled up in nature and a very kind-hearted person. She likes to help others selflessly. But when there is a group assignment or any kind of activity she just escapes for that particular day. Prakriti loves to entertain others who feel very lonely or remain separated from the friend group in the college. She is a very talkative and humorous person. From seniors to faculty people, she always tries to make people happy. When an event happens in the college she will be the first person to participate in it. She is very god-fearing and hard-working.

Prakriti is a very interesting person for me as I learn lots of things from her. She easily gets friendly with other students and her talking style is unique. Every Sunday she is the only person to accompany me to buy weekly products for the college. I admire the way she uses funny sentences to entertain others. She is very fascinating not only for me but also for my classmates.

Sample Answer 2

In our life, we meet different kinds of people. Some of them leave an imprint on our minds by teaching us something about the journey, while others stay by our side till the end. Being a wallflower, I like to observe people more than interact with them. Therefore, when I met Ms. Lily, I found her very interesting.

Ms. Lily is one of my professors in college. She teaches us Medieval History, which is usually boring to most people and even I get bored sometimes. But, her method of teaching captivates everyone in every class. She does not prefer the usual ways of teaching and focuses on engaging us in various subjects. This makes her classes very interactive and educative. Other than that, she is not judgmental and has a great sense of humor. From her gait and interactions, one can easily understand that she is confident, passionate about what she does, and a good listener.

I admire Ms. Lily because she always motivates us to think out of the box and even though she has been through a lot in her life being an orphan, she is never pessimistic. She believes that if we maintain a positive outlook during hardships, it will not only help us to get over them quickly but also inspire others to do the same. I have met few people like her and I hope I can learn and implement her optimism in my own life.

  • God-fearing: earnestly religious Eg: she is not a god-fearing woman.
  • Fascinating: extremely interesting Eg: this novel is very fascinating to read.
  • Captivating: capable of attracting and holding interest; charming. Eg: The dance school is looking forward to hiring captivating teachers
  • Humorous: causing laughter and amusement; comic.   Eg: She is a very humorous kind of person.

To begin, in Ted Hughes’s 1999 poem collection Birthday Letters focuses on the pitfalls of the relationship while offering insight into the conflict’s origin. In Hughes’s poem “The Shot”, he identifies Plath’s obsession with her father’s death as the source of her distress through the use of an extended metaphor, use of imagery and visual structure. He begins by comparing Sylvia’s father to a “God” and her obsession as her “worship” to him as he describes, “Your worship needed a god. Where it lacked one, it found one here”. The religious reference communicates to us the audience the severity of her devotion and also her need to fulfil it with other male figures. Hughes continues to compare Plath’s consequent actions through an extended metaphor of a “bullet”. He describes her “You were gold-jacketed, solid silver, nickel-tipped. Trajectory perfect. ” The detail within the imagery such as “gold”, ”silver” and “nickel” establishes Plath’s high maintenance and her determination through the short syntax of “trajectory perfect”. Therefore, we , the audience is presented with one of the perspectives which establishes the sources of conflict in the relationship.…

Sylvia Plath's Depression Reflected In Her Work

Sylvia Plath, an extremely influential and beloved female poet who lived in the mid-20th century, was the author of numerous poems as well as the semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar. Her work, especially that of her adult life, heavily reflects the darkness and depression that she dealt with. Plath, born in October of 1932, began writing at a very young age. Her first published work, titled simply “Poem”, was published before she had even turned ten. Plath wrote many short stories during her early years, and she even won several writing competitions. One of these was a fiction contest that earned her a position as guest editor at Mademoiselle…

She will always be remembered as a loving mother, friend and wife. I will always remember her as a great wife and brilliant mother to my children. I think most people will remember her as the girl who was killed in the lottery. Which is sadly part of her life story, but I will always remember her as my loving Tessie. Tessie accomplished very much in her lifetime. The three biggest accomplishments she completed was being a doctor, a youth group minister, and a great wife and mom. The first thing I mentioned was her being a doctor, from the age of thirty to forty five tessie was our town's doctor. Treating the ill with knowledge and love she saved many townspeople's lives. She touched the hearts of many young children and teens by being our town’s youth minister. She brought many young souls closer to God including mine. The way I will remember her the most and my children will was how good she was to her family. We were truly blessed to have such an amazing person in our family. All of here were so fortunate to know, Tessie. Tessie and I have many memories together but, my favorite one occurred about twenty years ago. It was when we brought home my son Ollie from the…

Comparing 'Salvation And The Lesson'

It is almost difficult to imagine that Sylvia actually has any innocence left to loose given the fact that the author portrays Sylvia to be the tough kid from the block with jaw dropping language, thick skin, and a seemingly bad attitude in general. Yet, it is of the opinion that Sylvia’s innocence is truly thinking that the environment, neighborhood, and poverty that she grew up in is all that is available to her, because she knows no other; that is until Miss Moore attempts to educate her. To illustrate Toni Bambara writes, “And Miss Moore asking us do we know what money is, like we a bunch of retards. I mean real money, she say, like it’s only poker chips or monopoly papers we lay on the grocer. So right away I’m tired of this and say so.” (Bambara, 1972, para. 3). The innocence of Sylvia seems to be that Sylvia has just simply accepted where and who she is and not questioned the other…

Gryphon: Teacher and Baxter

In the first paragraph is presented Miss Ferenczi a substitute teacher. Unlike other boring normal substitute teachers, who “provided easeful class day, and nervously covered material” (Baxter, p. 15)into the class came woman they had never seen. “She was no special age but her face had two prominent lines, descending vertically from the sides of her mouth to her chin. I knew where I had seen those lines before: Pinocchio. They were marionette lines” (Baxter, 2010). As she walks to the blackboard, picking up pieces of white and green chalk, she draws a large oak tree on the left side of the blackboard saying the class needs this tree in it. Then she told the class about her royal Hungarian ancestor. She was proud of her mother being a famous pianist who succeeded her first concert in London for “crowned heads. The substitute teacher’s behavior and personality surprised her students because she was strange. She was different from their mothers, which were uneducated housewives sitting “silently at the back of the room, doing her knitting.” (Baxter, 2010) Narrator’s mother “face and hairstyle always reminded other people of Betty Crocker, whose picture was framed inside a gigantic spoon on the side of the Bisquick box” (Baxter, 2010). For him his “mother face just looked white” (Baxter, 2010). She always had chores to do; she was only interested in cleaning and cooking. She did not participate in the life of her son, she really did not talk to him, she just command. They only have time…

Sylvia Plath Research

Sylvia Plath was born in 1932 during the peak of the great depression when unemployment soared over 20%. Although she was subject to a life filled with hardships and anguish, Sylvia allowed those hardships to shape her as a socially adept young woman. Plath excelled academically, and allowed her writing to be influenced by her rough past. After marrying a fellow poet Ted Hughs and having two children, she published hundreds of works that told of her tragic life and unreasonable thoughts. Soon, poetry wasn’t enough to keep Plath sane after an affair and divorce and she ended her life in 1963 after many failed attempts. Through and through, Sylvia Plath was a very bright, mid-20th century poet who will remain forever famous for her proficient achievements in writing, trying marriage, and history of abuse and suicide.…

Essay title: Interesting Person

An interesting person should have lots of intrigues in his brain, and he should have a curious characteristic. So the adjective "interesting" seems to be the best word to describe me, there is no other better word. All of my old friends know I am a person who has lots of intrigues and happiness. In every important party, I am always invited to be the joker. For these reasons, I believe that I am the most interesting person I know.

Interesting things were not strange to me when I was young. I still remember when I in primary school, I always thought about the difference between boys and girls. The most interesting matter was that why boys and girls went to different restrooms, and what was the difference of the 'equipment' inside restrooms. This question was always running around in my brain. Once I asked my father about it, but it might because my father grew up in a traditional Chinese family in which no one could talk about sex, his answer was " you will know when you get older!" which made me frustrated. Because I was extremely interested in this matter, so once I decided to switch the male-restroom card and the female-restroom card to see what would happen. The consequence was that no one knew how to use the 'equipment' in the switched restrooms. Finally, my class teacher who blamed me for tricking classmates told me about the differences between boys and girls.

Till I entered high school, I still did not change my naughty characteristic. I have a very interesting experience to share with you: One time my brother drove me to school by his new Honda sports car, he drove faster by my request as I was going to be

Essay on “an interesting person” for students and children, best essay, paragraph, speech for class 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12., an interesting person.

I met Mr. Vijay when we moved into our new house. He was our next-door neighbor. Mr. Vijay was an elderly man who lived alone. He had a part-time domestic servant who came daily to cook and wash for him.

Mr. Vijay was a very sociable and amiable man. He was in his mid-seventies when I first came to know him. He was of slight build and was slightly hunchbacked. His eyesight was bad and he was almost blind without the aid of his thick glasses.

I became fast friends with this old man. For one thing, Mr. Vijay was a bookworm. He loved reading and spent most of his time poring over books, magazines, and newspapers. He was a truly erudite person. He was inquisitive by nature and he would read on just about any topic. This made him a great conversationalist as he could speak on just about any subject under the sun.

Mr. Vijay had bought the house next to ours when he retired a few years previously. It was rumored that Mr. Vijay was very wealthy but he was never spending money unnecessarily and his wants were frugal. Indeed, it seemed that Mr. Vijay spent most of his money o books and other printed matters.

I enjoyed chatting with Mr. Vijay and we would often discuss various interesting topics. I was a bookworm as well ( and I still am ) and we had similar inclinations towards the subjects we read. We would spend hours talking about history, science, politics, and other subjects of mutual interest.

Three years ago, Mr. Vijay died at the age of seventy-nine. He bequeathed all the books which he had in his personal library to me. Believe it or not, Mr. Vijay had more than six thousand books in his library! My father converted one of our rooms into a library to house all the books Mr. Vijay left me.

I feel sad that Mr. Vijay is no longer around. I have yet to find someone with whom I can converse as I had with that learned old man.

About 5% of young adults in the U.S. say their gender is different from their sex assigned at birth

A protester holds the trans flag and snaps in solidarity with other transgender rights advocates during a demonstration outside the Ohio Statehouse on June 6, 2021.

At a time when transgender and nonbinary Americans are gaining visibility in the media and among the public, a new Pew Research Center survey finds that 1.6% of U.S. adults are transgender or nonbinary – that is, their gender differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.

Respondents were classified as transgender or nonbinary if they answered the sex and gender questions in any of the following ways: 1. If they said they describe themselves as nonbinary or volunteered a term such as “gender fluid” or “agender” to describe their gender 2. If they said their sex assigned at birth was male and they describe themselves as a woman, and then confirmed that was accurate in the GENDERCONFIRM question 3. If they said their sex assigned at birth was female and they describe themselves as a man, and then confirmed that was accurate in the GENDERCONFIRM question

The questions used for this classification are below, along with instructions for the survey administrator. The GENDERCONFIRM question is used to avoid misclassifying respondents who made an error when answering the sex or gender questions as transgender. This type of error can have an outsize effect on estimates of small populations such as the transgender and nonbinary population, making it appear larger than it really is. Some federal surveys use this approach.

[DISPLAY SEX AND GENDERNEW ON THE SAME SCREEN]

DISPLAY TO ALL: Now just a couple of questions for demographic purposes …

ASK ALL: SEX What sex were you assigned at birth, on your original birth certificate? [RANDOMIZE RESPONSE OPTIONS]

ASK ALL: GENDERNEW Do you describe yourself as a man, a woman, nonbinary or in some other way? [DISPLAY RESPONSE OPTIONS 1 AND 2 IN SAME ORDER AS SEX]

ASK IF SEX AND GENDERNEW DO NOT MATCH ((SEX=1 AND GENDERNEW=2) OR (SEX=2 AND GENDERNEW=1) OR (SEX=1 AND GENDERNEW=3) OR (SEX=2 AND GENDERNEW=3)): GENDERCONFIRM Just to confirm, you were assigned [IF MALE AT BIRTH (SEX=1): male ; IF FEMALE AT BIRTH (SEX=2): female ] at birth and you describe yourself as [IF GENDER IS MAN (GENDERNEW=1): a man ; IF GENDER IS WOMAN (GENDERNEW=2): a woman ; IF GENDER IS NONBINARY (GENDERNEW=3): nonbinary ] . Is that correct?

A bar chart showing that in the U.S., young adults are the most likely to be transgender or nonbinary

Meanwhile, a rising share of Americans say they know someone who is transgender. This analysis accompanies an essay that examines the experiences and views of trans and nonbinary adults based on a series of focus groups.

Adults under 30 are more likely than older adults to be trans or nonbinary. Some 5.1% of adults younger than 30 are trans or nonbinary, including 2.0% who are a trans man or trans woman and 3.0% who are nonbinary – that is, they are neither a man nor a woman or aren’t strictly one or the other. (Due to rounding, subtotals may not add up to the total.) This compares with 1.6% of 30- to 49-year-olds and 0.3% of those 50 and older who are trans or nonbinary.

The share of U.S. adults who are transgender is particularly high among adults younger than 25. In this age group, 3.1% are a trans man or a trans woman, compared with just 0.5% of those ages 25 to 29. There is no statistically significant difference between these two age groups in the share who are nonbinary or the total share who are trans or nonbinary.

Pew Research Center conducted this study to estimate the share of Americans whose gender is different from the sex they were assigned at birth. The study also explores the share of Americans who know someone who is transgender and the share who know someone who is nonbinary. These findings are part of a larger survey of the general public on their attitudes about gender identity and issues related to people who are transgender or nonbinary. Other survey results will be released later this summer.

This analysis accompanies findings from six focus groups that study the experiences and views of transgender and nonbinary adults.

This analysis is based on a survey of 10,188 U.S. adults. The data was collected as a part of a larger survey conducted May 16-22, 2022. Everyone who took part is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way, nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology . Here are the questions used for this analysis, along with responses, and its methodology .

A rising share of adults say they know a transgender person

A bar chart showing that more than four-in-ten U.S. adults report knowing a trans person

While a relatively small share of U.S. adults are transgender or nonbinary, many say they know someone who is. More than four-in-ten (44%) say they personally know someone who is trans and 20% know someone who is nonbinary.

The share of adults who know someone who is transgender has increased from 42% in 2021 and from 37% in 2017.

Today, roughly half of adults younger than 30 and those 30 to 49 say they know a trans person – higher than the share among older Americans. Still, a third of those 65 and older report knowing someone who is trans.

Democrats and independents who lean to the Democratic Party are more likely than Republicans and Republican leaners to say they know a transgender person, but Republicans are catching up. As recently as June 2021 , 48% of Democrats said they knew a trans person, compared with 35% of Republicans – a gap of 13 percentage points. Today, 48% of Democrats and 42% of Republicans say this – a gap of just 6 points.

A bar chart showing that about a quarter of U.S. adults say they have a trans friend

About a quarter of U.S. adults say they have a trans friend (27%), while 13% say they have a co-worker who is trans and 10% say they have a transgender family member. About one-in-ten adults (9%) say they know a trans person who is younger than 18.

A bar chart showing that one-in-five U.S. adults say they know someone who is nonbinary

When asked if they know someone who doesn’t identify as a man or a woman, 20% of U.S. adults say they do. The share is higher among younger adults, those living in urban and suburban communities, those with higher levels of education, and Democrats.

Most Americans (79%) say they have heard at least a little about people not being a man or a woman and instead describing themselves as not having a gender or using terms such as “nonbinary” or “gender fluid” to describe their gender. But only 26% say they have heard a lot about this concept.

Young adults are far more likely to be familiar with this than their older counterparts. About four-in-ten adults younger than 30 (42%) say they have heard a lot about being nonbinary, compared with 31% of those 30 to 49, 20% of those 50 to 64 and 12% of those 65 and older. Still, even older adults have at least some passing familiarity with the idea: Two-thirds of those 65 and older say they have heard at least a little.

A 2021 Pew Research Center survey found that 26% of U.S. adults personally knew someone who goes by gender-neutral pronouns such as “they” instead of “he” or “she,” up from 18% in 2018 .
