Essay on Summer Season

Essay generator.

The summer season, characterized by its warm weather and longer days, is a period of vibrancy and vitality that affects life on Earth in profound ways. This essay delves into the essence of the summer season, exploring its impact on the natural environment, human activities, and the cultural significance it holds across various communities, especially for students in the United States who are keen on understanding and writing about this luminous time of the year.

Summer is one of the four temperate seasons, marking the transition from spring to autumn. In the Northern Hemisphere, it spans from June to August, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it occurs from December to February. This season is primarily associated with warm to hot weather, extended daylight hours, and a flourishing of flora and fauna. Summer’s onset is heralded by the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, which is a significant astronomical event celebrated in many cultures.

Impact on the Natural Environment

Flourishing of flora and fauna.

Summer brings about a transformation in the natural landscape. Trees and plants, which have been dormant during the cold months, burst into life, displaying lush foliage and vibrant flowers. This season is crucial for the growth cycle of many species, providing optimal conditions for photosynthesis, the process by which plants produce energy. The abundance of plant life, in turn, supports a wider ecosystem, including insects, birds, and mammals, which thrive on the availability of food and favorable living conditions.

Climate and Weather Patterns

The weather during summer can range from pleasantly warm to intensely hot, depending on the geographical location. Regions closer to the equator experience higher temperatures and humidity, while coastal areas might enjoy cooler breezes. This season is also marked by various weather phenomena, such as thunderstorms, hurricanes, and monsoons in certain parts of the world, shaped by the complex interplay of atmospheric conditions.

Human Activities and Lifestyle Changes

Leisure and recreation.

Summer is synonymous with vacation, leisure, and outdoor activities. With schools and universities on break, it is a time for travel, exploration, and relaxation. Families often take holidays, visiting beaches, mountains, and national parks. Activities such as swimming, hiking, and camping become popular, taking advantage of the favorable weather. Summer camps and workshops offer children and adolescents opportunities for learning and personal development outside the traditional classroom setting.

Agricultural Significance

For agricultural communities, summer is a busy season of growth and cultivation. It is a critical time for planting and tending to crops that will be harvested in the fall. The warm weather accelerates the growth of many plants, making it essential for farmers to manage their fields carefully to ensure a bountiful harvest.

Cultural Festivals and Celebrations

Summer is a season rich with cultural significance and festivity. Many communities across the globe celebrate summer solstice festivals, which often have ancient roots and traditions. In the United States, the Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is a major summer holiday characterized by fireworks, parades, and barbecues, commemorating the nation’s history and values.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages of Summer Season:

  • Warm Weather: The most obvious advantage of summer is the warm and pleasant weather. It provides an opportunity for people to enjoy the outdoors, go to the beach, have picnics, and engage in various recreational activities.
  • Sunshine: Summer offers abundant sunshine, which is essential for the body’s production of vitamin D. Sunlight can also improve mood and mental well-being.
  • Outdoor Activities: Summer is the perfect time for outdoor sports and activities like swimming, hiking, camping, biking, and playing sports like baseball, soccer, and tennis.
  • Vacations: Many people take advantage of the summer season to go on vacations, explore new places, and spend quality time with family and friends.
  • Gardening: Gardening enthusiasts thrive in the summer season as it provides ideal conditions for planting and growing a wide variety of flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Festivals and Events: Summer is the season of festivals and events, offering opportunities to celebrate cultural, music, food, and art festivals in many parts of the world.
  • Extended Daylight: Longer daylight hours mean more time for outdoor activities, extended evenings, and an overall boost in productivity.
  • Fresh Produce: Summer is the season for fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables, making it a great time to enjoy a healthy diet.

Disadvantages of Summer Season:

  • High Temperatures: While warm weather can be enjoyable, excessive heat can be uncomfortable and even dangerous, leading to heat-related illnesses like heatstroke and heat exhaustion.
  • Dehydration: Hot weather can lead to increased water loss through perspiration, which requires people to stay hydrated by drinking more water.
  • Sunburn and Skin Issues: Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause sunburn, premature aging of the skin, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Skin protection is essential during the summer.
  • Insect Pests: Summer is a season when various insects and pests are more active, potentially leading to annoyance and the need for pest control measures.
  • Allergies: Pollen levels tend to be high during the summer, triggering allergies in some individuals, leading to symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes.
  • Increased Energy Costs: Running air conditioning and fans to stay cool in the summer can lead to higher energy bills, especially in regions with extreme heat.
  • Crowds and Traffic: Popular vacation destinations can become crowded during the summer months, leading to traffic congestion and long lines at tourist attractions.
  • Difficulty Sleeping: Hot summer nights can make it challenging to get a good night’s sleep, leading to discomfort and fatigue.

Health and Well-being

Benefits of sunlight.

Summer’s ample sunlight provides essential vitamin D, beneficial for bone health and immune function. The longer days encourage people to spend more time outdoors, promoting physical activity and mental well-being. However, it is crucial to balance sun exposure with proper protection to prevent skin damage and heat-related illnesses.

Challenges and Precautions

The heat of summer also poses health risks, such as dehydration, heatstroke, and sunburn. It is essential to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, and use sunscreen to mitigate these risks. Especially in regions experiencing extreme heatwaves, taking precautions to stay cool is vital for health and safety.

Educational Opportunities

Learning and exploration.

Summer offers a unique opportunity for educational exploration outside the traditional academic calendar. Many students engage in internships, volunteer work, or research projects, allowing them to apply their knowledge in practical settings and gain valuable experience. Libraries and museums often host summer programs, encouraging continued learning and intellectual engagement.

The Value of Rest and Reflection

Additionally, summer provides a chance for students to rest and reflect on their academic and personal growth. This break from the structured demands of school can be a crucial period for rejuvenation and setting goals for the future.

Environmental Considerations

Sustainability and conservation.

The season’s increased energy consumption, due to air conditioning and travel, highlights the importance of sustainability and conservation. Summer serves as a reminder of the need to protect our natural environment and consider our impact on the planet.

The summer season, with its warm weather and extended daylight, profoundly influences the natural world and human life. It is a time of growth, vitality, and celebration, offering opportunities for leisure, learning, and personal development. However, it also poses challenges that require attention and care. As we embrace the joys and activities of summer, it is essential to do so with a sense of responsibility towards our health and the environment. For students and participants in essay writing competitions, understanding the multifaceted aspects of summer not only enriches their writing but also deepens their appreciation for this vibrant season.

The Vividness of Summer

Summer is synonymous with life and vivacity. As the trees wear a lush green look and flowers bloom in their full glory, the world seems to awaken from a long sleep. The long days also mean more daylight to enjoy outdoor activities. Whether it’s a game of beach volleyball or a serene walk in the park, summer provides the perfect setting.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Season Summer

Summer, the season of vibrant life and relentless energy, is my favourite season. Despite the scorching heat, the season embodies a unique blend of life’s simple pleasures and the grandeur of nature. The season’s essence is not just in the high temperatures, but also in the opportunities it presents for exploration and self-discovery.

The Glory of the Sun

The most striking feature of summer is the omnipresent sun, a celestial body that becomes a constant companion during this season. Its golden rays, though fierce, bring out the vibrancy in everything they touch. The sun is not merely a source of light and warmth but a symbol of the relentless spirit of life. It stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, illuminating the world even in the harshest conditions, teaching us the value of resilience and determination.

Summer: A Season of Discovery

Summer is also a season of discovery and exploration. The long, sunlit days provide ample time to embark on adventures, explore new places, and immerse oneself in novel experiences. The season’s heat may be challenging, but it is also a call to action, urging us to step out of our comfort zones and face the world head-on. It is during these summer adventures that we often discover hidden aspects of our personalities, learning to appreciate our strengths and accept our weaknesses.

The Vibrancy of Life

Summer is synonymous with life’s vibrancy. From the lush green foliage of trees to the colourful bloom of flowers, the season paints a picture of life in its most dynamic form. The chirping of birds, the buzzing of insects, and the rustling of leaves create a symphony of natural sounds that add to the season’s charm. This vibrancy is not just an aesthetic delight but a reminder of the beauty of life and the importance of living each moment to the fullest.

Summer’s Social Aspects

The social aspect of summer is another reason for my fondness for the season. Summer breaks from college provide an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, strengthening bonds and creating cherished memories. The season’s warmth fosters a sense of community as people gather for barbecues, beach outings, and summer festivals. These social interactions not only provide joy but also help develop our social skills and understanding of interpersonal relationships.

In conclusion, my affection for summer is not just because of the warm weather or the extended daylight. It is a favourite because of the life lessons it imparts, the opportunities for self-discovery it provides, and the social interactions it fosters. The season’s vibrancy and energy serve as a constant reminder to embrace life, face challenges head-on, and appreciate the beauty in every moment. Summer, with all its heat and brilliance, truly symbolizes the zest for life.

The summer months are fun for most people as this is also when delicious tropical fruits such as mangoes and watermelons are available. To sum it up, summers are fun as there is so much to enjoy during this season.

A long descriptive essay on the summer season is a challenging exercise for the students of lower primary classes. It should have good facts and plenty of original ideas to impress the readers. Here is an example of an essay:

The summer is the hottest of all seasons in the country, which falls between March and June. During these months, the daily temperature can go higher than 35 degrees and even peak at 45 in some places. Change in seasons occurs due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis. When the Earth goes around the sun, different parts of the planet face the sun at different angles. This leads to more heating at one place and less heating at the other. Thus, different parts of the world can experience different seasons at the same time.

During the seasons leading up to summer, the lack of rains causes depletion of water in the rivers, lakes and reservoirs. The summer heat causes more evaporation and can lead to draughts in some parts of India. The water is replenished once the monsoon starts in July. The summer weather in most parts of the country is hot and dry. It can also get humid in some parts of the country. The greener areas sometimes experience thundershowers in the evenings on long summer days.

During summers, people in the city resort to different methods to beat the summer heat. Schools and colleges have long vacations to allow students to unwind from the academic year and relax at home. Families take vacations to hilly regions of the countries and coastal destinations to have fun and enjoy the cool weather.

Summer is a great season for all as it is the time for breaks and vacations. People also love summers for the seasonal treats in the form of ice cream and cold drinks and delicious seasonal fruits like mangoes and watermelon.

Your child will learn plenty of facts about summers from the examples mentioned above. The essay presented here act as a good guide to children. Students can pick up important facts about the summer season and learn how to write their essays from the ideas mentioned above. The examples given here are suitable for tests and assignments for children in the lower primary grades.

The four seasons of the year: spring, summer, autumn (fall) and winter

The four seasons have very different characteristics.

Seasons are periods of the year with distinct weather conditions and day lengths.

Autumn (Fall)

Seasons are not the same everywhere, what causes the seasons, additional resources, bibliography.

Seasons are periods of the year with distinct weather conditions and day lengths.

The four seasons — winter, spring, summer, autumn — can vary significantly in characteristics and can prompt changes in the world around them. Here, we explore the seasons of the year in more detail.

Attributes of the seasons may vary by location, but there are still broad definitions that cross most of the boundaries.

In the spring , seeds take root and vegetation begins to grow. The weather is warmer and often wetter. Animals wake or return from warmer climates, often with newborns. Melting snow from the previous season, along with increased rainfall, can cause flooding along waterways, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In the summer , temperatures may increase to the hottest of the year. If they spike too high, heat waves or droughts may cause trouble for people, animals, and plants. For example, in the summer of 2003, the high temperatures claimed more than 30,000 lives, according to Encyclopedia Britannica . Rainfall may increase in some areas, as well. Others may receive less water, and forest fires may become more frequent.

When does summer start?

In the Northern Hemisphere, summer starts on June 1 and runs to August 31

What is the hottest summer on record?

Historically, the heatwave during the Dust Bowl Summer of 1936 was considered the hottest summer on record, but in 2021 the average summer temperature of the contiguous U.S. was 74.0 degrees Fahrenheit (23.3 degrees Celsius), 2.6 degrees above average, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

In the autumn , or fall, temperatures cool again. Plants may begin to grow dormant. Animals might prepare themselves for the upcoming cold weather, storing food or traveling to warmer regions.

Various cultures have celebrated bountiful harvests with annual festivals. Thanksgiving is a good example. "Thanksgiving in the United States is a historical commemoration but it has a spiritual dimension strongly associated with homecoming and giving praise for what has been bestowed upon us," Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, told Live Science.

Why is it called autumn instead of fall?

Both 'autumn' and 'fall' are words used in the English language to describe the season that starts on 1 September in the Northern Hemisphere, with fall being commonly used in American English. According to Dictionary.com , the word autumn comes from the old French word 'autompne', which itself originated from the Latin 'autumnus'. The roots of the Latin name are obscure, but it was first recorded in the English language from the late 1300s.

Winter often brings a chill. Some areas may experience snow or ice, while others see only cold rain. Animals find ways to warm themselves and may have changed their appearance to adapt. "In a similar way to the Autumnal theme, Winter festivals celebrate the return of the light during a time of deepest physical darkness," said De Rossi. The Indian festival of Diwali, for example, which takes place between October and November, celebrates the triumph of righteousness, and light over darkness.

Is winter the longest season?

Although it is easy to imagine the seasons neatly fitting into four equal lengths, according to NPR this isn't quite the case, they are all slightly different — and their duration changes depending on which hemisphere you are in.

Due to the elliptical orbit of Earth around the sun, at certain points in the year the planet is moving faster and shortening the season. However, the distance from our star has less impact on Earth's seasons than the planet's tilt, which means that summers are warm in the Northern Hemisphere despite being further from the sun. As it is moving slower, the spring-summer season is also actually longer, by about seven days.

The timing and characteristics of the seasons depend upon the location on Earth . Regions near the equator experience fairly constant temperatures throughout the year, with balmy winters barely discernible from warm summers. This is because it gets fairly constant light from the sun, due to its position on the outer curve of the Earth, according to the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program.

For areas to the north and south, the seasons can change more significantly. People closer to the poles might experience icier, more frigid winters, while those closer to the equator might suffer hotter summers.

According to Time and Date :

– Spring: March 1 to May 31;

– Summer: June 1 to August 31;

– Autumn (Fall): September 1 to November 30

– Winter: December 1 to February 28 (February 29 in a leap year).

Other factors can also affect the weather and temperature over the seasons; some areas experience dry summers as temperatures spike, while others might call summer their "wet season." A wet season is when a majority of a country or region's annual precipitation occurs, according to the Met Office . Mountainous regions might experience more snowfall than plains within the same latitude, while oceanfront property could see an increase in violent tropical storms as the weather shifts.

The time of year a region experiences a season depends on whether it is in the northern or southern hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere experiences winter while its northern neighbors encounter summer; the north sees the slow blossom of spring while the south brings in the autumn harvest.

A diagram demonstrating how the seasons are caused by the Earth’s axial tilt

The cycle of seasons is caused by our planet's tilt toward the sun . The Earth spins around an (invisible) axis. At different times during the year, the northern or southern axis is closer to the sun. During these times, the hemisphere tipped toward the star experiences summer, while the hemisphere tilted away from the sun experiences winter, according to NOAA .

At other locations in Earth's annual journey, the axis is not tilted toward or away from the sun. During these times of the year, the hemispheres experience spring and autumn.

The astronomical definition of the seasons relates to specific points in Earth's trip around the sun. The summer and winter solstice, the longest and shortest day of the year, occurs when Earth's axis is either closest or farthest from the sun. The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs around June 21, the same day as the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, according to NOAA. The south's summer solstice occurs around December 21, the winter solstice for the north. In both hemispheres, the summer solstice marks the first day of astronomical summer, while the winter solstice is considered the first day of astronomical winter.

Equinoxes are another significant day during Earth's journey around the sun. On these days, the planet's axis is pointed parallel to the sun, rather than toward or away from it. Day and night during the equinoxes are supposed to be close to equal. The spring, or vernal, equinox for the northern hemisphere takes place around March 20, the same day as the south's autumnal equinox. The vernal equinox in the southern hemisphere occurs around September 20, when people in the north celebrate the autumnal equinox . The vernal equinox marks the first day of astronomical spring for a hemisphere, while the autumnal equinox ushers in the first day of fall.

But changes in the weather often precede these significant points. The meteorological seasons focus on these changes, fitting the seasons to the three months that best usher them in. December to February marks meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere and meteorological summer in the southern. March, April, and May are lauded as spring or autumn, depending on the location, while June through August are the months of summer for the north and winter for the south. September, October, and November conclude the cycle, ushering in fall in northern regions and spring in southern, according to NOAA.

The seasons can bring a wide variety to the year for those locations that experience them in full. The weather in each one may allow people to engage in activities that they cannot perform in others — skiing in the winter, swimming in the summer. Each season brings with it its own potential dangers, but also its own particular brand of beauty.

I Hate Summer—and You Should Too

Sunburned boy

W ake me when it’s over—summer, that is. I know, I know, you just love it: the long days, the warm evenings, the trips to the beach, the afternoons at the ballpark when your favorite team is playing and the pennant race is tightening—and the temperature is skyrocketing, and your skin is blistering, and the beer is $6, and the drive home will be in 88° heat, which is fine if you don’t mind running the air conditioner, except that you’re burning through $4–a-gallon gas, because it’s summer-driving season and the giant oil companies didn’t get to be the giant oil companies without knowing the right time of year to hike their prices.

And that’s hardly all of it. Summertime is the season of horribles, from higher crime rates, to increased warfare, to spikes in asthma, to raging wildfires, to swarms of bugs, to a rise in traffic accidents—and even to a bump in divorces, because how could a 100° heat wave, a busted A.C., and the kids out of school not spell domestic bliss?

What’s more, it’s only getting worse. Last summer was the hottest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the 10 warmest years were all from 2010 to 2022. So with a lousy part of the year becoming lousier still, here, in no particular order, are nine reasons summer is the suckiest season of them all.

Road wrecks

There’s nothing like long days, no school, and lots of teen drivers to make the highways a safe place to be. Not . It’s no coincidence that the Automobile Association of America (AAA) labels the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day “the 100 deadliest days.” There are over 11.7 million U.S. drivers between the ages of 15 and 20, and if you know what’s good for you you’ll stay out of their way—especially when they’re out as a group, driving recreationally. “We know that when teens are joyriding as opposed to driving with a specific destination and time in mind, there is a heightened risk,” said Diana Gugliotta, senior manager of public affairs for AAA Northeast, in a statement last year.

Read More : What It's Like To Be Deathly Afraid of Feet

AAA’s numbers back that up. When a teen driver has only other teens in a vehicle, the risk of fatality for the driver and all passengers increases 51%. When at least one passenger is over 35, the overall fatality risk declines 8%. From 2011 to 2020, there were 7,316 deaths in summertime teen-related traffic accidents—nearly half the total of all teen-related traffic accidents for the year.

This means war

Napoleon Bonaparte could tell you a thing or two about what it’s like to pick a fight with Russia in the dead of winter. In 1812, the French army suffered half a million casualties in battles that climaxed in December—a rout that led to Napoleon’s abdication and exile in 1815. Any general worth his steed would prefer to fight in the summer when there’s plenty of light, the roads are clear, and soldiers aren’t bundled up against the cold. As far back as 55 BCE , the Roman army’s “campaigning season” would end when summer wound down and the soldiers would retreat to their winter quarters. It’s probably not a coincidence that World War I began in August 1914, World War II on Sept. 1, 1939, and Nazi Germany’s invasion of Russia in June 1941. More recently , in August 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, and in August 1991, the old Soviet Union nearly fell into civil war when communist hardliners tried to oust President Mikhail Gorbachev. America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan typically saw its fiercest fighting in the summer months, and the same is true of the war in Ukraine .

Hot-weather warfare is likely only to get worse. A 2009 paper in PNAS found that rising temperatures exacerbated by climate change could lead to a 54% increase in the risk of civil war in Africa by 2030. A 2011 study in Nature found that warmer weather during El Niño years doubled the risk of civil war in 90 tropical countries and could have accounted for 20% of conflicts around the world over the past half century. Meantime, what’s the season of peace on Earth and goodwill toward men? Wintertime, baby. Wintertime.

Going buggy

Summer advertises itself as the season of birdsong and butterflies. Don’t believe it. It’s the season of pests—particularly ticks, mosquitoes, flies, fleas, bees, and wasps. Ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas in particular can spread diseases that include malaria, yellow fever, Zika, dengue, Lyme, and chikungunya. Bees, wasps, and yellowjackets—with their infernal stings—are similarly creatures of the summer. And you think you know flies? You don’t know flies. There are 110,000 species of them —most more active in hot weather—making up a global population of 17 million flies for every living human. Pssst ! They’ve got us surrounded.

Season of wheeze

Ah, summer, it takes your breath away. Literally. More than 25 million Americans have asthma, and 4.7 million of them are children— according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If that means suffering during the temperate months, it’s much worse when the oven that is summer turns the dial up to broil. Heat and humidity constrict and narrow airways , trap ozone, and cause the air to entrain more particulate matter from cars, trucks, and smokestacks. What’s more, stagnant summer air—especially in homes with poor air conditioning or none at all—can exacerbate the presence of mold, dust, and pollen. And then—and stop me if I’ve mentioned this before—climate change is making things more punishing still for people with asthma. A 2023 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report found that rising temperatures could increase the incidence of childhood asthma by anywhere from 4% to 11%, due partly to worsening pollution and allergies, and the growing problem of wildfire smoke .

Speaking of wildfires…

When it comes to dust, haze, and a mustard-colored sky, Mars has got nothing on Earth—at least during the summer fire season. Last year’s Canadian wildfires , sparked by lightning and fueled by high temperatures and drought, torched more than 71,000 square miles of land in Canada—an area the size of North Dakota—and yellowed out skies in the U.S. from the Midwest to the Northeast to the mid-Atlantic states. But the U.S. is playing with matches too. California’s wildfire season runs from April through October—peaking in the summer—with megadroughts and heat waves driving the flames. Of the state’s 20 largest fires, half occurred from 2017 to 2022. Climate change, of course, plays a regrettable role in all of this.

Crime and punishment

Nothing puts bad guys in a bad mood like hot weather—or so it seems. A 2019 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that on days with a maximum temperature above 85°F, all crime increases by 2.2% and violent crime by 5.7%. A 2023 study in PLOS One attributed this to what is known as the Theory of Routine Activities, which postulates that for crime to occur, three factors must be present: a motivated offender, a suitable target, and an absence of guards or surveillance. Of these, it is the second one—the suitable target—that is especially common in summer, according to the 2023 study, with greater numbers of people out on the streets.

As for the first variable, a motivated offender, well, even criminals don’t   want to be outside commiting a crime in a 20°-below polar vortex. During a particularly deep freeze in 2015, Boston saw a 32% drop in burglaries, a 35% drop in larceny, and 46% drop in vehicle theft. Over the same period, New York City set a modern-day record , going 12 days without a homicide.

Summer’s contribution to violent crime in particular may be due at least in part to the common experience of hot weather leading to hot tempers, with even the most even-keeled people more inclined to blow a seam if they can’t cool off. One 2020 study found that people playing competitive video games in a hot room were more aggressive toward their gaming partner than they were when the room was cooler.

Daylight Saving Time

Don’t get me started on Daylight Saving Time. There is just nothing to like about this spring-forward inanity. For starters, it increases energy consumption (when it was supposed to decrease it) due to greater use of air conditioning. The changes in sleep patterns it causes contribute to heart attack , stroke , inflammation , and suicide , not to mention a 6% increase in fatal traffic accidents due to circadian scrambling and overall sleepiness. Small children and teens suffer particularly when the change in the clocks affects sleep cycles.

Finally, the atmospherics are all wrong. Nighttime is nighttime, people; the sun is the party guest that won’t go home if it’s still out at 9 p.m. I say send it packing no later than 8 p.m. and then race back to a nice wintertime sundown at cocktail hour. Cheers.

Trouble on the homefront

If you want to stay married, it might be wise to sleep through summer. That’s the finding of a 2016 study out of the University of Washington showing that August, along with March, are the two peak months for divorce in the U.S. The reason in both cases is more or less the same: couples tend to see winter and summer vacations as untouchable family time and, even in highly stressed marriages, will make it a point to hold the ship together for those treasured stretches. Once the good times are over, however, the marriages might be too.

“People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past,” said sociology professor and the study’s co-author Julie Brines, in a statement at the time the research was released. “They’re very symbolically charged moments in time.”

When those expectations are dashed, a bust-up is likelier to follow. And while both early spring and late summer were implicated equally in that study, other research by Stowe Family Law in the U.K. found that September—the tail end of summer—is the peak divorce month on the other side of the pond, with total-immersion family time throwing financial, interpersonal, and other issues into relief.

It kills your skin

No matter how good it might feel to bake in the sun, your skin really, truly does not want a tan. In a rapidly warming world, it should come as no surprise that the sun is murder on your skin—drying it, aging it, cracking it, and much more importantly, leading to cancer. A 2022 paper in the journal Cureus found the highest rates of skin cancer diagnoses occurring from July to October.

Simple steps like wearing sunscreen , avoiding the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and wearing protective clothing can all help reduce the risk. Sunshine in the winter, of course, can cause similar damage, but in the summer you're out a whole lot more and wearing a whole lot less. That—like summer as a whole—spells trouble.

Correction: The original version of this story misstated the date of Napoleon Bonaparte's abdication. It was 1815, not 1914.

My Favourite Season Summer Essay

We appreciate and savour many things during the summer. We like extended vacation time in the summer. We enjoy our time with our family and friends during the summer holidays. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘My Favourite Season Summer’.

100 Words Essay On My Favourite Season Summer

Summer is the hottest time of the year but it’s also one of my favourite seasons. Beginning of the summer ignites a sense of hope and opportunity for me and makes me feel like I can achieve all my goals. The days are longer, and the nights are shorter throughout the summer and gives you all the more time to work and play. The sun shines brightly, and the sky becomes clearer.

My Favourite Season Summer Essay

Fruits and vegetables come in a variety during the summer, I especially look forward to mangoes and lychees. Farmers also prepare their fields for agriculture during the summer months for different vegetables and fruits.

200 Words Essay On My Favourite Season Summer

India has a wide range of climatic conditions. The locals take pleasure in the qualities of the many seasons. Every season has its unique qualities. But summer is my favourite season among the other seasons and I eagerly anticipate its arrival. Typically, the summer season begins in April and lasts through June. Although summer is the hottest season, I adore it very much. We have long summer vacations throughout the season and many festive holidays, which is my favourite part about the summers.

Long Summer Vacation | We have a two-month summer break from school during summers and that is why I adore this season so much. During the summer break, we are free from the school's everyday activities and work. By letting go of the pressure of regular homework and studies, we can eat, sleep, and play with friends.

Fun Activities During The Evening | Summer is a great season to train for a variety of sports and competitions. Summertime brings an increase in outdoor activities. I'm always eager to play different sports and games in the evening, and I end up spending the majority of my time with my friends. I make it a point of taking part in different sports, clubs and hobbies including swimming and dancing and horse riding. I love the summertime.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Season Summer

Summer is my favourite season. Everyone, including me, has a favourite time of year. Everyone has a break from school during summers, so we enjoy the long holidays. Another factor that makes summer my favourite season is that I get to taste cold beverages and delicious ice creams. During this season, we have access to a vast range of food items. We also have access to great mangoes during the summer. Mangoes are my favourite fruit.

Thus summers generally make me happier. We appreciate and savour many things during the summer. I enjoy my time with my family and friends during the summer holidays. We even take family vacations when we are all free and wish to escape the heat. Even if it's just a short trip, I look forward to them every year because I get to bond with my family members. I also love to participate in various summertime activities like summer camps, cycling, swimming, and more. Summers have always been my favourite season since they are so thrilling and full of possibilities.

The Specialty Of Summer Season

  • The days are long, and the nights are short throughout the summer. The days are bright and sunny. In the summer, we can completely unwind in the afternoon.

During the summer, the water parks are constantly crowded with visitors who want to cool off and have fun. In the summer, I enjoy swimming in the pools because it makes me feel liberated. Moreover, I get to consume various different cuisines during the summer.

Fresh cucumbers, enormous watermelons, delicious oranges, sweet guavas, nourishing muskmelons, and other fruits are available in the summer season.

Summer clothes that are so colourful and floral are undoubtedly another summertime specialty. To fully enjoy the summer, people like to dress in shorts, dresses, sleeveless shirts, and other items.

The summer months are crowded with people visiting the hill stations to escape the heat.

I, therefore, appreciate summer even more as a result of all these specialties. My relatives have a small farm within a few hours drive where we go every summer to spend time and taste the delicious fruits. They always serve the best mango juice, and I was amazed at how fresh the juice was and how it tasted so good. This also makes the summer season special. During summer vacation, I usually spend time with my family, and we all go to the garden and parks on the weekend for a picnic and take fresh air under trees.

But summer time is also quite dangerous since hot air blows during the day, which can also make us ill. People also became dehydrated. People can also suffer from burns to the skin. In the summer, all of the water in the reservoirs evaporates resulting in scarcity in some areas.

Nonetheless, summer is my favourite season because everything is so fantastic and vibrant. Even the fruits and vegetables we receive are so vibrantly coloured which is a sight to behold. Children who attend school appreciate the summer more since it gives them more time to play and unwind. The summers are pleasant, warm, and sunny.

The college application season is upon us, and high school students everywhere are staring down at one of the most daunting tasks: the college essay. As someone who has guided countless applicants through the admissions process and reviewed admissions essays on an undergraduate admissions committee, I've pinpointed the essential ingredient to a differentiated candidacy—the core of your college admissions X-factor .

The essential ingredient to your college admissions X-factor is your intellectual vitality. Intellectual vitality is your passion for learning and curiosity. By demonstrating and conveying this passion, you can transform an average essay into a compelling narrative that boosts your chances of getting accepted to your top schools. Here are five dynamic strategies to achieve that goal.

Unleash Your Authentic Voice

Admissions officers sift through thousands of essays every year. What stops them in their tracks? An authentic voice that leaps off the page. Forget trying to guess what the admissions committee wants to hear. Focus on being true to yourself. Share your unique perspective, your passions, and your values. Authenticity resonates deeply with application reviewers, making your essay memorable and impactful. You need not have experienced trauma or tragedy to create a strong narrative. You can write about what you know—intellectually or personally—to convey your enthusiasm, creativity, and leadership. Intellectual vitality shines through when you write with personalized reflection about what lights you up.

Weave A Captivating Story

Everyone loves a good story, and your essay is the perfect place to tell yours. The Common Application personal statement has seven choices of prompts to ground the structure for your narrative. The most compelling stories are often about the smallest moments in life, whether it’s shopping at Costco or about why you wear socks that have holes. Think of the Common Application personal statement as a window into your soul rather than a dry list of your achievements or your overly broad event-based life story. Use vivid anecdotes to bring your experiences to life. A well-told story can showcase your growth, highlight your character, and illustrate how you've overcome challenges. Intellectual vitality often emerges in these narratives, revealing how your curiosity and proactive approach to learning have driven you to explore and innovate.

Reflect And Reveal Insights

It's not just about what you've done—it's about what you've learned along the way. When you are writing about a specific event, you can use the STAR framework—situation, task, action, and result (your learning). Focus most of your writing space on the “R” part of this framework to dive deeply into your experiences and reflect on how they've shaped your aspirations and identity.

What To Watch This Weekend New Streaming Shows And Movies On Netflix Hulu Prime Video And More

Wwe smackdown results, winners and grades as aj styles turns heel again, the top 10 richest people in the world june 2024.

The most insightful college-specific supplement essays demonstrate depth of thought, and the ability to connect past experiences with your future life in college and beyond. Reflecting on your intellectual journey signals maturity and a readiness to embrace the college experience. It shows admissions officers that you engage deeply with your studies and are eager to contribute to the academic community.

Highlight Your Contributions—But Don’t Brag

Whether it's a special talent, an unusual hobby, or a unique perspective, showcasing what you can bring to the college environment can make a significant impact. Recognize that the hard work behind the accomplishment is what colleges are interested in learning more about—not retelling about the accomplishment itself. (Honors and activities can be conveyed in another section of the application.) Walk us through the journey to your summit; don’t just take us to the peak and expect us know how you earned it.

Intellectual vitality can be demonstrated through your proactive approach to solving problems, starting new projects, or leading initiatives that reflect your passion for learning and growth. These experiences often have a place in the college-specific supplement essays. They ground the reasons why you want to study in your major and at the particular college.

Perfect Your Prose

Great writing is essential. Anyone can use AI or a thesaurus to assist with an essay, but AI cannot write your story in the way that you tell it. Admissions officers don’t give out extra credit for choosing the longest words with the most amount of syllables.

The best essays have clear, coherent language and are free of errors. The story is clearly and specifically told. After drafting, take the time to revise and polish your writing. Seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or trusted friends, but ensure the final piece is unmistakably yours. A well-crafted essay showcases your diligence and attention to detail—qualities that admissions officers highly value. Intellectual vitality is also reflected in your writing process, showing your commitment to excellence and your enthusiasm for presenting your best self.

Crafting a standout college essay is about presenting your true self in an engaging, reflective, and polished manner while showcasing your intellectual vitality. Happy writing.

Carl Radke on His Tumultuous Journey Through ‘Summer House’

From getting sober, grieving the loss of his brother and calling off his engagement, Radke has let viewers in on the most intimate moments of his life.

A man in a white tank top is behind the steering wheel in a car. Another man, in a backward baseball cap, is in the back seat playfully sticking his tongue out and holding a red Solo cup.

By Shivani Gonzalez

The first time Carl Radke appeared on television screens was during an episode of “Vanderpump Rules” that was actually a backdoor pilot for a new Bravo show, “Summer House.”

In the episode, Radke is 29, working in New York City and drinking copiously on the weekends in a Hamptons share house with his friends Kyle Cooke, Lindsay Hubbard and a few others.

The spinoff became a Bravo phenomenon all its own, one that has now spanned eight seasons, with Radke one of the few constants as the cast around him changed. Viewers have seen his tumultuous 30s play out onscreen: He has been in messy relationships, confronted his drinking and gotten sober, mourned the death of his brother and, in the Season 8 finale, called off his engagement.

Over coffee in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where at 6 feet 5 inches tall Radke was certainly the tallest person in the room, he imagined his life if it hadn’t been spent in front of cameras for the past several years. “I feel like I would probably be married and have a family, but living a very, like, a lower key life,” he said, before going through some of the moments that have defined his time on “Summer House” so far.

The early seasons: drinking, drinking, more drinking

Though many Bravo reality shows involved quite a bit of drinking (look no further than early seasons of “Vanderpump Rules”), Radke, Cooke and Hubbard were known to make others look like lightweights.

“There are weekends during Seasons 1 and 2 where they completely don’t show because we were so drunk,” Radke said. One specific weekend sticks out, he added, when the friends headed to an oyster farm but viewers never saw it.

“We were so drunk at the oyster farm, there was no story. Nothing was being really moved along. And just us shucking oysters and drunkenly saying stupid things.”

Bravo is currently managing a string of lawsuits , some of which include claims that producers encouraged an environment of heavy drinking. One “Real Housewives of New Jersey” cast member said that producers would provide alcohol, which sometimes led to extreme drunkenness. Another housewife, this one from the cast of “Real Housewives of New York City,” claimed that despite her being sober, producers continued to encourage her to drink.

Radke tells of a different experience.

“With the volume of drinking, only we decided to do that,” he said. It became such a part of their identity that Cooke started Loverboy, a business selling spiked iced tea, with Radke as a vice president of sales. “We loved to party. I’m telling you, they took drinks out of our hands.”

The middle seasons: reckoning with sobriety

Radke’s problems with alcohol became apparent as the show progressed. In a Season 4 episode, Cooke tells Hubbard that Radke showed up to a work event drunk, leaving Cooke to simultaneously play the roles of babysitter and worker.

Radke said seeing himself on the show actually helped him realize how serious his problem was, especially with how it dominated so much of his time.

“Every other Bravo show, you film a dinner or at a party and then you go home, in separate places. We go home, back to the same spot, where there’s more microphones and more cameras,” Radke said.

He made the decision to get sober before the fifth season, which was filmed during the first year of the Covid pandemic. Rather than traveling back and forth between the city and the Hamptons, the cast hunkered down in a Hamptons mansion for six weeks — working from home and trying to enjoy the social time.

Everything seemed like it was on the right track for Radke, until the unthinkable happened.

That August, with cameras filming, Radke got a call that his brother had died. His housemates rallied around him and he took a brief break from filming, but when he got back to the summer house, he started drinking again.

The anxiety and panic didn’t entirely hit Radke until six months later when he tried to come to terms with the fact that news of his brother’s death, and the way he coped, would be broadcast on national television.

“I went back to New York City, to my old SoHo apartment, and that’s when I just, like, started spiraling,” he said. “Drinking and using by myself. And just the fear of like, ‘This is going to play on TV.’”

Though the anxiety of the show’s dealing with his brother’s death led him down a dark path, Radke also credits the show with his survival.

“I’d like to think the show saved my life — seriously, I don’t know if I would have ever seen myself behave. I always thought that it was like, fun, people liked being around me, but over time, that wasn’t the case,” Radke said of his drinking.

The current season: engagement fallout

As Radke settled into sobriety, his main plot point on the show centered around his relationship with a fellow housemate, Lindsay Hubbard.

Radke and Hubbard had flirted with the idea of dating in earlier seasons, but it wasn’t until the seventh season that they made it official. By the end of that summer, after less than a year of dating, they were engaged. Their wedding was set for November 2023, and though audiences knew before the start of Season 8 in February that Radke had called it off, the events leading up to the breakup have played out onscreen over the past few months. Radke has come off as both a sympathetic figure and a villain as the relationship dissolved.

“I’m not proud of how I was handling the situation and how I was treating her. I mean, I was clearly frustrated and, you know, so I wish I had really been more direct,” Radke said. “You can clearly see I’m struggling to communicate my feelings and that’s not on her, that’s on me — I’m seeing myself blame and play victim, and I don’t want to be either.”

Looking to the future: a clean slate

As Radke reflects on his past eight years on television — almost the entirety of his 30s — he’s identified some things he’d like to do differently.

First, he is fully single for the first time in years. He noted that in the world of recovery, it is recommended that you be single for a full year at the start of your sobriety — but in every season of the show Radke has been in some sort of relationship. Now, he wants to take that advice.

Another point of tension this season came between Radke and Hubbard, about Radke’s work ethic (or lack thereof). He plans to use his sobriety as a new way to focus his career, working with Cooke on a nonalcoholic line of sparkling tea and developing a bar that serves nonalcoholic cocktails for people who want to be able to go out without drinking.

Though the “Summer House” finale just aired, filming for Season 9 begins shortly back in the Hamptons. Radke’s goals are simple.

“I’m looking forward to this summer because of my friends and getting back to having fun. Got one more summer before I’m 40,” he said with a laugh.

Two students dancing at prom. Sinking sun during the 2022 California wildfires.

Summer is supposed to be for vacation and more relaxation, right? Well, for climate watchers, this season goes by a more sinister name. Brittany and NPR climate correspondents Lauren Sommer and Nate Rott get into what changes in summer weather mean for how and where we live. Then, it's prom season and high schoolers are showing out! But styles have changed since the days of poofy dresses and bedazzled purses: prom fashion has reportedly become more adult. For many young people, prom reflects their ideas of glamour, so does this shift say something new about the fantasies of girlhood? Brittany sits down with writer Hilary George-Parkin who wrote about the blurring of age in fashion.

This episode was produced by Barton Girdwood and Liam McBain with additional support from Alexis Williams. It was edited by Jessica Placzek and Sara Sarasohn. Engineering support came from Kewsi Lee. Chargers News: Tuli Tuipulotu Shares What He's Correcting This Summer

Matt levine | may 30, 2024.

what is the essay of summer season

  • Los Angeles Chargers

Entering the offseason, the Los Angeles Chargers knew that they needed to improve across the roster. Not only did they bring in a new head coach and general manager but they overhauled the offensive players as well.

Defensively, they remained similar but did add some extra talent. The Bolts are hoping that the added players plus more growth from some young stars can make a big difference.

This includes second-year linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu, who was huge for the Chargers last season. He spoke about what he worked on over the summer and is looking forward to having the chance to show out this year.

"I think going into the offseason, I had a good idea of what I needed to work on," Tuipulotu said. "I don't think it was that hard to figure out what I needed to work on."

Last season, he grabbed 4.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback hits. He also posted 53 total tackles to go along with two forced fumbles as well.

It was a big first season for Tuipulotu but he will now be relied upon even more this year. He wanted to work on his pass-rushing game during the summer and believes he made an impact.

"I would just say my get off and my pass rush," Tuipulotu said about what he worked on. "I think a lot of people thought I had a good impact in the pass rush game, but I felt like I left so much stuff on the field. I had a lot of opportunities to make more plays and didn't take advantage of it.

If he can add some extra quickness to get to the quarterback more, it would vastly improve the Bolts' chances this season. He may not be the main piece on defense but Tuipulotu has an extremely important role to play.
