How did Australian universities go?
Australia has 10 universities in the top 200.
After the University of Melbourne, Monash University, the University of Queensland, University of Sydney and Australian National University were top of the list for Australian institutions.
Those same universities were also the top five among Australian institutions in last year's list, but Monash University went up a ranking, while the Australian National University went down.
While some institutions went up by one or two rankings since last year, the University of Adelaide rose 23 places, the University of Technology Sydney went from 143 up to 133 and Macquarie University jumped from 192 to 172.
The Group of Eight Universities — a bloc of some of Australia oldest and largest universities — pointed out that seven of its eight members made it into the top 100 of the list.
That group's chief executive, Vicki Thomson, said all Australian universities that had increased their rankings deserved recognition and congratulations.
"More Australian universities have gained ground rather than dropped in the rankings, which is testament to the overall quality of our higher education sector," she said.
How do they work out the rankings?
There's five categories that go into scoring each university, being:
- International outlook
- Industry income
A significant portion of the scoring comes from an annual reputation survey, which this year had more than 40,000 responses, but it also takes into account a university's:
- Staff-to-student ratio
- Doctorate-to-bachelors ratio
- Doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio
- Institutional income
- Research income
- Research productivity
- Proportion of international students
- Proportion of international staff
- International collaboration

Oxford retains top spot in world rankings for sixth consecutive year
The University of Oxford remains top of the table in latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings
Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the results of the THE World University Rankings 2022, with the University of Oxford retaining top spot for an impressive sixth consecutive year.
In a year dominated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the rankings reflect the vital role of universities in understanding and managing the crisis as a number of institutions around the world saw significant boosts in their citation scores (a measure of a university’s research influence and impact in spreading new knowledge and ideas) from Covid-19 focused research.
Professor Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, said: 'My colleagues and I are absolutely delighted to have achieved the top ranking again. There are many great universities around the world and we are proud to be in their company.
'This past year has demonstrated to our publics, our governments, and even to ourselves just how much universities can contribute to society. The vaccine Oxford developed is being distributed in over 170 countries and over a billion doses have been manufactured. Together our universities have made the strongest possible case for renewed public investment in research universities.'
This year’s rankings – based on a methodology that includes analysis of 14.4 million research publications, a survey of 22,000 academics around the world and data on teaching, research – saw a record 1,662 universities from 99 countries and regions appear in the table.
Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer at THE, commented: 'The THE World University Rankings 2022 consistently prove that the UK is home to one of the world’s very best higher education systems. But while these rankings contain an element of competition, more importantly they’re about understanding strengths and weaknesses in an international context. Although the UK has seen some good results this year, Covid-19 has provided new challenges to add to those related to the impact of Brexit.
'These challenges mean the UK must work hard to attract international students and academic talent to contribute to its knowledge economy in both the short and long-term. With mainland China and Germany rising, this will be essential for the UK to retain its position as a higher education superpower.'

It’s that time of year again for the top universities to vie for a coveted position on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings , also known as THE Rankings . The 2022 rankings mark an even more extensive evaluation of higher education institutions than 2021, with 1,600 universities from 99 countries included. This year’s rankings have also considered the influence of Covid-19 in the performance and trends within higher education. Let's jump right in and analyse the results.
Which universities made the top 10?
The top ten places were dominated by some of the most well-renowned and famous institutions in the world. The number one spot was a race for the line between the University of Oxford and the California Institute of Technology. In the end, the University of Oxford emerged victorious for the sixth year in a row, while the California Institute of Technology jumped two places from 2021.
The top 10 universities were dominated by institutions from the USA, with eight spots occupied by American universities, many of which are Ivy League members. This reflects the same trend as 2021, which also saw two UK universities make the top 10, both members of the Russell Group . The 2022 rankings top 10 did not feature any new entrants and features the same universities as in 2021.
However, there was a rise of two spots for Princeton University to 7th and a drop of one spot for the University of California Berkeley. 2022 also sees the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology share 5th place. Harvard University enjoyed its highest placing on the rankings since 2016.

Which universities ranked in the top 30?
There are some interesting trends in the rankings for 2022. This is the first year that two universities from China have made the top 20, namely Tsinghua University and Peking University. There was also a strong showing from universities in Hong Kong, with four institutions in the top 100.
The USA accounted for the greatest number of universities in the top 200, with 57. The UK comes in second with 28 representatives, followed by Germany with 22 institutions. Australia and China are also well established in the top 200 with 12 and 10 universities respectively.
Interestingly Canada saw a slight dip with only seven universities in the top 200, putting the country on par with Switzerland. There was another new entrant into the top 200 with the first Saudi Arabian university, King Abdulaziz University, ranked 190th. Let’s turn our attention to the universities in positions 11 to 30:
11. Columbia University - USA

Impact Rankings 2022
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparison across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.
The 2022 Impact Rankings is the fourth edition and the overall ranking includes 1,406 universities from 106 countries/regions.
View the Impact Rankings 2022 methodology
The overall ranking is led by an Australian institution: Western Sydney University.
In second place is the US’s Arizona State University and third is Western University in Canada.
No one country dominates the top 10, with universities from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, New Zealand and Japan also featuring.
The top institutions from an emerging economy are King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia and Universiti Sains Malaysia, in joint fourth place.
The Impact Rankings are inherently dynamic: they are growingly rapidly each year as many more universities seek to demonstrate their commitment to delivering the SDGs by joining our database; and they allow institutions to demonstrate rapid improvement year-on-year, by introducing clear new policies, for example, or by providing clearer and more open evidence of their progress. Therefore, we expect and welcome regular change in the ranked order of institutions (and we discourage year-on-year comparisons) as universities continue to drive this urgent agenda.

- Higher education institutions are facing a reckoning over their delivery of social and economic impact to their communities and to society.
- The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings show the most impactful universities from around the world from leading on providing decent work and economic growth to contributing to delivering affordable, clean energy.
- A record 1,524 institutions from 110 countries and regions participated across the rankings on 2022 representing a 23% increase on the previous year.
A great “reckoning” is coming to universities around the world.
Such was the contention of Harvard professor Fernando Reimers, a leading member of the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s Commission on the Futures of Education, this year. In an interview with Times Higher Education , he said: “In recent decades… the public and politicians are increasingly asking, ‘What good do universities do for society? Who do universities serve?’
“I think that is causing a reckoning within the higher education community perhaps of comparable significance to the reckoning that led to the last major transformation of the university after the Second World War” – an era of great expansion of university education and widening access.
The Commission called for “a new social contract for education.”

Is this what higher education will look like in 5 years, achieving our education goals can unlock all the sdgs, there is a great global 'levelling up' underway in universities.
But a massive new data analysis released today – covering more than 1,500 universities from 110 countries – clearly demonstrates that global higher education is ready to face this reckoning.
Delivering sustainable change
The 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings , based on universities’ contributions to delivering the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), show that universities worldwide are seizing the moment to double down on a long tradition of public service of delivering sustainable social and economic impact for their communities and society at large.
Based on a series of more than 100 metrics and over 200 measurements , covering universities’ teaching, research, outreach into the community and the stewardship of their own resources, the rankings show universities from all over the world delivering real impact across all 17 SDGs – whether that’s Western University in Canada leading efforts to help eradicate poverty (SDG 1) or the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa leading on work to provide decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) or Fudan University in China heading up the table of universities’ contribution to delivering affordable, clean energy (SDG 7).
Overall, 17 different universities from 14 countries top one of the 17 individual rankings for each SDG – a diverse global community ready to hold itself accountable for the delivery of the global goals, sharing data and benchmarking progress.
A record 1,524 institutions from 110 countries and regions have participated across the rankings this year, a 23% increase since last year, reflecting the growing importance of the SDGs within higher education institutions globally.
THE Impact rankings include tables for each individual SDG, as well as an overall ranking – drawn from universities’ performance in their best three individual SDG categories, combined with their performance in the compulsory category of SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
Australia’s Western Sydney University claims the top spot in the overall ranking, which includes 1,406 institutions, after topping the table for SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) and coming second in SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production).
Collaboration is key
Hailing his university’s success in the rankings, Western Sydney University vice chancellor Barney Glover called for universities worldwide to join forces to tackle the SDGs.
“If we are arrogant enough to believe that we can make a difference to the complex problems we’re facing without collaborating, without bringing the best together to think through, to analyze, to synthesize and to strategize, then I think we are going to let down generations to come,” he said.
And the rankings could certainly encourage more diverse, international university collaborations, as the top ten include eight different countries from across four continents, with only one representative from the United States, Arizona State University, in second place. Last year’s world number one, Manchester University, takes ninth place in an annual list that is inherently dynamic: the rankings are growing each year rapidly as many more universities seek to demonstrate their commitment to delivering the SDGs by joining the database; and they allow institutions to demonstrate rapid improvement year-on-year, by introducing clear new policies, for example, or by providing clearer and more open evidence of their progress.
Speaking at the ed-tech-focussed ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego in early April, Joy Johnson, president of Canada’s Simon Fraser University, said that taking part in the Impact rankings had allowed the university to “hold a mirror up to ourselves”.
“We’ve learned some interesting things… we have learned what we are doing really well, and we have surprised ourselves... More importantly, we’ve learned where the gaps are and where we need to continue to push ourselves.”

Durham in world top 30 most international universities
- Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
We’ve been named as one of the world’s most international universities by the Times Higher Education (THE).
Ranked 26 th , the league table recognises Durham as one of the world’s best based on our high proportion of international students and staff, our collaborations with universities across the globe and our strong international reputation.
We have offices in India and China, actively recruit students in over 70 countries and we’re very proud to have staff and students from more than 150 countries, creating an outward-looking, globally-minded and inclusive University.
To support this, we’re delighted to offer a range of new International Scholarships to students from Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Vietnam, looking to start their undergraduate or taught postgraduate studies in 2022.
Global research
Our research spans the globe with partnerships, collaborations and projects on every continent.
Combined with our all-round student experience, this makes our graduates among the most highly sought-after in the world.
We believe international collaborations are vital in enhancing global knowledge for the benefit of societies across the world.
As part of this, our researchers, working with groups including the United Nations, have developed a new model to simulate the spread of Covid-19 , which has helped curb the spread of the virus in the world’s largest refugee settlement.
Our Zurbarán Centre is establishing the University and Durham as an international Centre for the study of Spanish and Latin American art .
We’ve revolutionised research into infant sleep safety around the world and helped reduce rates of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
And our work on Islamic finance’s contribution to economic development and the role it can play in sustainable development has resulted in recommendations that have been used to inform draft Islamic finance policy.
With the Chinese Academy of Sciences we have established the highly successful Knowledge Across Borders webinar series , exploring some of the most pressing issues facing society today.
Our students are also doing inspiring things, like Jeremiah Thoronka, a postgraduate Anthropology student, who was the first winner of a new $100,000 prize after he invented a device that uses kinetic energy from traffic and pedestrians to generate clean power.
