Bluebeam Revu has a presentation mode, for when you don’t have powerpoint and need to present your PDF markups and renderings to others.

View Mode vs. Markup Mode

Applies to:

To collaborate in Studio without a Revu license, download Revu and click Use as Trial when prompted to register your software. This will give you access to all of Revu's features free for 30 days; then, once the trial ends, you can continue using Revu in View Mode.

What View Mode and Markup Mode do

View Mode (formerly Bluebeam Vu ) allows you to use Measurement tools, join Studio Sessions and Projects, and view documents. Other features available in View Mode include MultiView, MultiView Extended, Presentation mode and Profiles . Open License users will find View Mode particularly helpful (see below) .

While in a Studio Session, View Mode provides access to many of the markup and tool set features normally reserved for licensed users of Revu, including measurements, comments and markups.

View Mode also allows you to check out Studio Project files so that you can fill out forms and sign documents. As with Sessions, adding files is not allowed.

Markup Mode allows full access to the Revu features available with your edition . You can switch between the two modes from the Revu menu.

The benefits of View Mode

View Mode is mainly intended for users who haven't registered Revu, or have an Open License . If you're not one of these people, you'll only need Markup Mode.

But if you're one of these people, View Mode has two main benefits:

• Unregistered users - If you decide not to purchase a license after installing a Revu trial, you can continue using Revu in View Mode for free.
• Open License users - View Mode gives you access to Revu's basic functionality (see above) without occupying a seat in your license pool. If you're using Markup Mode (and thus occupying a seat), switching to View Mode will make your seat available to a colleague. If all Open License seats are occupied when you open Revu, Revu will automatically open in View Mode.

Disabled functionality in View Mode

The following actions are disabled in View Mode, regardless of your permissions :

• Creating a new PDF
• Adding files to a Session
• Saving copies of Session files
• Adding markups to a PDF outside of a Session

If you're not working in a Session, most tools will be disabled and appear grayed out. Also, certain menus won't be available (e.g. the Document menu).

Getting Started with Bluebeam

Creating a new PDF from scratch

To create a new PDF from scratch, go to the File menu and select “New.” You can start with a blank page or import images and other documents into your PDF.

Opening and editing existing PDFs

Bluebeam Revu 20 features a variety of different tools that can be used to assist your PDF viewing process. One such feature exclusive to Revu is Multiview , which allows you to split the workspace into multiple panels to view different PDFs simultaneously on the screen. When working with document comparison, Multiview can be extremely useful when combined with Revu’s Synchronize function, as two documents can be viewed simultaneously and navigated through in tandem. Going even further, Multiview also features extended functionality that allows you to separate different document tabs onto another monitor’s workspace if needed.

In this article, I will demonstrate how to use Multiview, Synchronize, and Multiview Extended in Bluebeam Revu 20. The following examples are taken from Bluebeam Revu 20 eXtreme version, but the same functionality is available within all versions of Revu.

With the screen split, each split panel will display the same document by default. Generally you would use this tool to view different documents simultaneously, so you can move a document from one split to another by clicking and dragging the desired document tab into the desired split window.

MultiView with Synchronization

One very useful way to use MultiView is to utilize the Synchronization tool. When enabled, the Sync function will allow the split views to move in tandem – as one split is zoomed and panned through, the other splits will follow. When working with document comparison, using MultiView and Sync allows you to view two versions of the same document simultaneously and move through them in tandem.

I’ll start off by having MultiView enabled with two split screens. Within these splits, I’ll place two versions of the same drawing – one split will display the original drawing and the other will display the revised version. To synchronize the screen, select View > Synchronize Document . Once synchronized, any zooming and panning done in one split will follow within the second split. Using the Sync feature, I can quickly identify any changes that were made between these two drawing versions.

Using MultiView Extended

MultiView Extended expands the functionality of MultiView by allowing you to separate a document tab from the main workspace to another workspace. This is especially useful if you make use of multiple monitors, as you can drag the split screen onto another monitor. To use MultiView Extended, simply have your screen split and Synchronized. Click and drag a document tab and drag it to your second workspace.

While detached, the Synchronization function will continue to allow you to move through each document in tandem.

Dual Monitor Profile on Bluebeam

One of the challenges with viewing construction drawings in digital format is the screen size. Fortunately, when you are at your desk its fairly easy to set up your workstation to take advantage of two monitors and spread things out a little. There are many ways that you can take advantage of the increased screen real-estate. This post will take a look at two of these.

If you have multiple monitors, you have probably already set them up as "extended display", or as "output to - extended display", as opposed to using the mirror screen mode. In short, the mirror screen mode (which many computers may default to without changing the settings) just shows the same thing on both monitors. The extended display mode is what you want to choose to really take advantage of the extra space. In most versions of Windows you can find this under the display settings, or just right-click on your desktop and choose "output to" then "extended display". If the monitors do not appear in the same order in which they are physically located, you can adjust this in the display settings without having to physically move your monitors.

One request I get fairly often is to use the two monitors as a single view and stretch the drawings across the two screens. This is easy, but you do have to keep a few things in mind. First, the two monitors must be the same size and resolution , and second, you must open Bluebeam REVU, stretch it out across the two screens first, then you can open your drawing file . After that you can also take advantage of Bluebeam's screen splitting features to easily view multiple PDF's across your new expanded workspace. This video from You Tube does a good job demonstrating this.

You may also just want to undock all of your tabs and panels and move them to one screen while your document file fills up the other screen. The easiest way to accomplish this is to use a profile setting. Bluebeam used to provide a Multiple Monitor Profile for download from the extensions section of their web site, but for some reason it's not there any more, so I have it available here on this site, just click here to jump to a download page . Once you download the file, just start Bluebeam REVU, select the VIEW menu and then click on the PROFILE icon. This opens a dialog box where you can select IMPORT and then navigate to the file to import it and install it as one of your available profiles.

This gives you two different ways to work with multiple monitors in Bluebeam. There are many additional ways you can continue to customize, so leave a comment if you want to share with others.

In this installment of our FAQ series Customizing Bluebeam Revu , we’ll take a look at the Main Workspace and Menu Bar.

The Main Workspace

The Main Workspace refers to the center area of the Revu interface where your file is displayed. When no files are open in Revu, the Main Workspace is a light-gray area.

In conjunction with the Navigation and Status Bars , the Main Workspace offers powerful features for viewing and manipulating PDFs .

You can change the way your files are presented with MultiView, MultiView Extended , and Presentation view. MultiView splits the Main Workspace horizontally or vertically, while MultiView Extended creates a separate workspace for each file.

Presentation mode ( Ctrl+Enter ) mode displays your multi-page PDF without the Revu interface, similar to a slideshow. You can move back and forth between pages using the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard, or the left and right buttons on your mouse (left-click for forward, right-click for back). This is different from Full Screen view ( F11 ), which displays an image of the PDF instead of the actual document.

The Menu Bar

The Menu Bar resides at the very top of the interface. From left to right the menus are:

When you click on any of the names, a drop-down menu will appear. Here is a brief overview of what you can find in each group:

Revu : Change Preferences, customize keyboard shortcuts, change your Profile, switch between Markup and View mode , learn about Revu workflows and access Bluebeam Administrator, among other things.

File : Open and create PDFs.

Edit : Access Undo and Redo, the clipboard, cursor types and text review markups.

View : Change the way PDFs are presented and interacted with.

Document : Edit page format, compare documents, OCR (eXtreme only) and other related options.

Batch : Apply options from the Document menu to multiple files, or create a Summary of all markups in a document.

Tools : Access all markups, Measurement tools, Toolbars and Stamps.

Window : Change the presentation of documents or the Revu interface. Access all Panels and open the Revu WebTab.

Help : The Help group has a number of options in case you get stuck:

• If you want to learn more about Revu’s features, click on Revu Help to look up in-depth information about features, functions and more.
• If you have a serious issue that you can’t fix, click on Technical Support to get help directly from Bluebeam. This will open a draft in your default email application with your Revu log files attached. Your log files and a detailed description of your problem will allow our Technical Support team to diagnose the issue as quickly as possible.
• If you’re having trouble registering Revu or another license issue, click on Licensing and Registration . Please include your log files and a detailed description of your problem in the email.
• Click Product Updates to ensure that you are using the latest version of Revu.

Main Workspace

In conjunction with the Navigation and Status Bars , the Main Workspace offers powerful features for viewing and manipulating your PDF’s, and customizing the way multiple documents are displayed using MultiView, MultiView Extended, and Presentation Mode.

MultiView lets you split the Main Workspace horizontally or vertically, while MultiView Extended lets you create a separate Workspace for each file by dragging Document Tabs your additional monitors.

Presentation Mode displays your PDF as a slide-show, and you can move back and forth between pages using the arrow keys on your keyboard. This is different from Full Screen Mode , in that it displays an image of the PDF instead of the actual document.

Command Bar

The Command Bar contains the Revu menus or Command Bar Groups ( File , Edit , View , Document , Markup , Measure , Window , Help , Settings , and Form ).

Hiding and Revealing the Command Bar

If you need more space to view your documents, you can hide the Command Bar by pressing the F9 key. Pressing the F9 key again makes it visible, which comes in handy if you’ve accidentally hidden it.

Changing the Command Bar Layout

If you’d like to use the “dropdown” style menu layout used in older versions of the Windows operating system, you can do so by clicking the Classic Menu checkbox found in the Revu General Preferences .
