PLAN PANNI PANNANUM MOVIE REVIEW

It is often said that comedy is serious business. When done right it could bring the house down with laughter. Plan Panni Pannanum aspires to do the same with an ensemble cast. Thankfully the actors do the best they can despite the highs and lows of a film.

The story starts off when the sister of the hero's friend elopes. From that point the film attempts to be an endless stretch of comic sequences. The first half of the film mostly succeeds in this attempt because the film doesn't take itself seriously. Genuine laugh out loud moments are scattered throughout the first half.

However, the film takes a melodramatic turn in the second half and goes into a preachy zone. It is here that the film loses its steam and lets go of the laughter that kept us engaged earlier. Is there really a need for a message? The lack of a proper villain or conflict was a dampener as well.

Rio Raj acquits himself quite well and his performance is pretty decent. With the right kind of films he could be a great option for medium budget entertainers. He shares a good camaraderie with Bala Saravanan.

Ramya Nambeesan is reliable as always. Has she dubbed in her own voice? her voice and dubbing was very refreshing. She's always been a part of smaller films which is quite laudable. From Pizza to Plan Panni Pananum Ramya Nambeesan has been a great constant.

The show stealers of the film are MS Bhaskar, Robo Shankar, Bala Saravanan and Thangadurai. The four of them are genuinely funny. It was good to see Bala Saravanan in a full fledged role after a while. We only wish the film had just taken the same route in the second half as well. That would have been a splendid sign-off for the year.

The film also lacks technical finesse which is a downer. This is Badri Venkatesh's third venture after Baana Kaathadi and Semma Botha Aagathey. The other two were technically much better films if compared.

Overall, Plan Panni Pannanum is neither a great film or a bad film. It settles somewhere in between.

Plan Panni Pannanum movie review: This supposedly funny film, starring Rio Raj, is engaging in parts

The story goes directionless after a point and becomes predictable towards the end

Story: Two Chennai-based IT employees, along with an ambitious girl, go to Kodaikanal to search one of their sisters who eloped with an unknown person. Upon reaching the hill station, the duo understands that it is almost impossible to separate the eloped couple. Later, their lives witness a few twists and turns after they bump into a few relatives of the girl with whom they travelled all the way to Kodaikanal.

Review: The advantage of watching a no-brainer is that you can enjoy the sequences in it in a laid-back manner. However, the entertainment quotient, needless to say, should be very high to keep the viewers engaged. Badri Venkatesh's Plan Panni Pannanum, which has been lying in the cans for sometime, belongs to the aforementioned category.

The film has a few impressive comedians in its cast apart from a couple of artists who have carved a niche for themselves as strong performers over the years. It also has an okayish plot which appears to be satisfactory for a no-brainer to entertain the audience. But are these factors really adequate enough to keep the viewers hooked?

The story begins with Sembiyan (Rio Raj) and Raju (Balasaravanan), two IT employees who set out to rope in a small-time actress to dance for a special event at their office. They manage to convince an actress (Anaika Soti plays herself) for the same and pay advance for it. 

Meanwhile, Raju's sister elopes with her boyfriend even as the two are chased by the actress' manager to pay the pending amount. They find that it is Aambal (Ramya Nambeesan) who helped Raju's sister to elope. Upon realizing that the eloped couple is in Kodaikanal, the trio go to the hill station along with Manmadhan (Robo Shankar), who has been friendzoned by Aambal.

Little did Sembiyan and Raju know that Aambal had other plans in mind while taking them to Kodaikanal. The duo get to meet Aambal's parents after which the course of the story changes. What happens to Raju's sister and her boyfriend? What was in Aambal's mind when she accompanied the two friends to Kodaikanal? 

With the likes of Rio Raj, Balasaravanan, Munishkanth, Robo Shankar and Thangadurai on board, one expects decent number of comic sequences in the film, and they partly succeed in entertaining the audience, thanks to some of the episodes in the first half. The scene involving Rio, Bala and Thangadurai making a TikTok video is hilarious because of the way it is presented.

The chemistry between Rio and Bala is one of the positive aspects of the movie, and the latter is a scream in a few sequences, thanks to his one-liners, funny expressions and body language. As an aspiring actor, Thangadurai, too, scores in a few scenes with his helplessness.

However, the lead actors didn't rise up to the expectations as their characters aren't written intriguingly. We aren't able to empathize with their feelings and incapabilities after the story takes a serious turn in the latter half. The romantic angle involving Rio and Ramya feels forced and leaves no impact. Though Munishkanth's antics are enjoyable in the beginning, it becomes repetitive as the story progresses. Robo Shankar's performance hardly leaves any impact.

The sub plot involving a tiff between the characters essayed by Aadukalam Naren and Marimuthu falls flat. The story goes directionless after a point and becomes predictable towards the end. The background score and a couple of songs composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja keep us entertained. The movie with a wafer-thin plot doesn't seem to take itself seriously which is fine. But some of the comic sequences failing to evoke laughter and a slew of melodramatic episodes going haywire leave us disconnected after a point.

Verdict: Despite having talented actors on board and a not-so-bad plot, the movie falters because of the partly unengaging screenplay.

A girl elopes with her boyfriend to get married. Her brother and his friends started searching for her. Did they find her out? Did she get married? What is the role of the heroine in this film? The film deals with all these answers in the second half.

Star Performance

Rio Raj, Remya Nambeesan, and Bala played naturally. Robo Shankar comes with a special role. It is questionable whether he impressed the audience or not. The rest of the stars did their best and supported the leads well.

Badri’s script is okayish. But, after a certain time, the story gets deviated from its central point. There are a lot of characters involved in the second half. Almost all the stars are given equal importance, and Rio Raj’s role is simple and neat. Although there is a huge lineup of comedy actors, the comedy worked out well only in some scenes, and the audiences feel that certain jokes could have been avoided. The cinematography and editing departments had done their job perfectly. Yuvan’s music is good.

About Plan Panni Pannanum Movie (2021)

Two Chennai-based IT employees, Sembi (Rio Raj) and Raju (Bala Saravanan), along with an ambitious girl, go to Kodaikanal to look for one of their sisters, Radha (Poornima Ravi) who eloped with a guy named Bharath Raj (Siddharth Vipin). `பிளான் பண்ணி பண்ணனும்' விமர்சனம்: காமெடியையும் கொஞ்சம் நல்லா பிளான் பண்ணி பண்ணிருக்கலாமே பாஸ்?!

பிளான் பண்ணாமலே அடுத்தடுத்து நிகழும் பிரச்னைகளும், அதைச் சமாளிக்க நண்பர்கள் இருவர் படும் அவஸ்தைகளும்தான் இந்த டிராவல் மற்றும் காமெடி சினிமாவின் கதை.

ஐடி ஊழியர்களான இரண்டு நண்பர்கள் தங்களின் குடும்பத்துடன் சென்னையில் சந்தோஷமாக வாழ்ந்து வருகிறார்கள். தங்கள் அலுவலகம் சார்பாக பார்ட்டி ஒன்றை அவர்கள் ஏற்பாடு செய்ய, அதில் சினிமா நடிகை ஒருவரைச் சிறப்பு விருந்தினராக அழைக்கின்றனர். அவருக்குத் தரவேண்டிய பணம் காணாமல்போக, கூடவே நாயகனின் நண்பனின் தங்கையும் காணாமல்போக, இரண்டையும் தேடிச் செல்லும் இந்த இரண்டு நண்பர்களின் பின்னே படத்தின் கதையும் செல்கிறது. அவர்கள் அடுத்தடுத்து சந்திக்கும் பிரச்னைகளும், அரங்கேறும் காமெடி ட்விஸ்ட்களும்தான் இந்த 'பிளான் பண்ணி பண்ணனும்'.

நாயகன் செம்பியனாக ரியோ ராஜ். 'நெஞ்சமுண்டு நேர்மையுண்டு ஓடு ராஜா' படத்திற்குப் பிறகு மீண்டும் ஹீரோவாக வாய்ப்பு. தன் பணியைக் குறைவில்லாமல் செய்திருக்கிறார். படமே லாஜிக்கில்லா காமெடிதான் என்பதால் சீரியஸான காட்சிகள் எதுவுமில்லை. அதனால், காமெடியில் தேறிவிடும் ரியோ, சென்டிமென்ட் எமோஷனல் காட்சிகளில் எப்படி என்பது போகப் போகத்தான் தெரியும். நாயகியாக ரம்யா நம்பீசனுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த வேடம்தான். அவர் எடுக்கும் முடிவுகள் கதையை நகர்த்திச் செல்கின்றன. காமெடி ஏரியாவுக்கு பால சரவணன், ரோபோ சங்கர், டைகர் கார்டன் தங்கத்துரை, எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர், முனீஸ்காந்த் என ஒரு பட்டாளத்தையே இறக்கியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் பத்ரி வெங்கடேஷ். ஆனால், காமெடிதான் பழங்கால சிரிப்பு டிராக் கொண்ட காமெடி சீரியல்களை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.

முதல் பாதி டிராவல் படமாக, ஒரு ரோடு மூவியாக ஆங்காங்கே சிரிப்பு மூட்டியபடி நம்மை அழைத்துப் போகிறது. பால சரவணன், ரோபோ சங்கர் காம்போ பல இடங்களில் நம்மைச் சோதித்தாலும், குறிப்பிட்டுச் சொல்லும்படியான அளவுக்கு நம்மைச் சிரிக்கவும் வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால், அந்த 'விஷபாட்டில்' காமெடியையே ஜவ்வாக இழுக்காமல், கொஞ்சம் மாற்றியும் யோசித்திருக்கலாம் பாஸ்.

பால சரவணனின் தங்கையாக வரும் பூர்ணிமா ரவி ஒரே டேக்கில் லென்த்தானதொரு வசனத்தைப் பேசி அசத்தியிருக்கிறார். கிட்டத்தட்ட 'திருவிளையாடல் ஆரம்பம்' படத்தில் தனுஷ் ஒரு பெண்ணை காதலிக்க வைக்க ஓர் இளைஞன் தான் செய்யும் 'சாகசங்களாக' பட்டியலிடுவதன் 'இளைஞி' வெர்சன் இது. அரசியல் பார்வையில் சரி, தவறு என்ற அளவீடுகளோடு இந்தப் படத்தை அணுகக்கூடாது என்றாலும், இதில் சிக்கல்கள் பல இருப்பதை மறுப்பதற்கில்லை.

அப்பாவி பணக்கார மாப்பிள்ளையாக சித்தார்த் விபின், நாயகியின் அப்பாவாக ஆடுகளம் நரேன், அம்மாவாக ரேகா, நாயகனின் அம்மாவாக விஜி சந்திரசேகர், அப்பாவாக சந்தானபாரதி, வில்லனாக மாரிமுத்து என அடிஷனல் ஷீட் கேட்டு பெயர் எழுதும் அளவிற்கு ஆட்கள் இருந்தாலும், ஆடுகளம் நரேனுக்கு மட்டுமே இதில் முக்கிய வேடம். வில்லனாகக் காட்டப்படும் மாரிமுத்து கடைசியில் என்னவானார் என்றே தெரியவில்லை. ரம்யா நம்பீசனின் கதாபாத்திரம் மூலம் பெண்ணின் முடிவெடுக்கும் சுதந்திரம் குறித்து விவாதித்திருப்பது ஆரோக்கியமான விஷயம்தான். ஆனால், அதை மறக்கடிக்கும் வண்ணம் வெளிப்படும் உருவக்கேலிகள், பெண்களை இழிவுப் பேசும் காமெடிகள் போன்றவற்றைத் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாமே?!

தமிழ் சினிமாவில் கடந்த சில வருடங்களாக மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்பட்டு வருவதைப் படக்குழு உணர்ந்ததாகவே தெரியவில்லை. காமெடி, அரசியல் பார்வை என இரண்டிலுமே அப்டேட்கள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன.

படத்திற்கு இசை யுவன் ஷங்கர் ராஜாவாம்! அவர் குரலில் ஒரு பாடல் ஒலிக்கும்போதுதான் நமக்கே அது தெரிகிறது. இளமைத் துள்ளலான படத்துக்கு யுவன் இசையென்றால் நிகழும் அந்த அதிசயம், அற்புதம் முற்றிலும் மிஸ்ஸிங்! சீக்கிரம் பழைய யுவனா திரும்பி வாங்க லிட்டில் மேஸ்ட்ரோ!

ஜி.ராதாகிருஷ்ணனின் வசனங்களில் நகைச்சுவை உணர்வு வெளிப்பட்டாலும், ஒரு முழுநீள நகைச்சுவைப் படத்துக்கான ஹூயூமர் அதில் புலப்படவேயில்லை. இயக்குநர் பத்ரி வெங்கடேஷே தோன்றும் காட்சிகளும், ரியோவை அவர் ஹீரோவாக செலக்ட் செய்யும் காட்சியும் ஒரு மெட்டா சினிமாவாக பக்கா முயற்சி. அதே பாதையில் இந்த ரோடு டிரிப் சினிமாவையும் கொண்டு சென்றிருக்கலாமே?! நகைச்சுவை என்பது சீரியஸான ஒரு பிசினஸ் என்பதை உணராமல் வண்டியை ஸ்டார்ட் செய்திருப்பதால், முழுமையானதொரு காமெடி படம் பார்த்த உணர்வை இந்த ட்ரிப் தர மறுக்கிறது.
