Wow! I never thought I would have my own scholarship , but this opportunity has come to fruition and I plan to use every dollar for the good of nursing. It is wonderful to be able to give back to the nursing profession, and it humbles me to be a part of this year’s recipient’s journey. I have been there, and nursing school is incredibly tough. To be able to ease the stress of that journey for a nurse pursuing his or her BSN is an honor !

I want to tell you why I believe scholarships are so important.

You always hear people talking about “nurse burnout”. Well, it is a real thing. Retirement is also a real thing. And the nursing shortage is a real thing . Therefore, we want and we need more nurses in this profession. I, personally, had to take out over $40,000 in student loans when I went to school, so I completely understand the need for scholarship and outside opportunities to fund your dreams. I want to live in a scholastic world where money does not stop one selfless human being from pursuing the most trusted profession in the world. Scholarships are super important to ensure that we can build up our profession with nurses for the future.

I would like to share an example of the Nurse Kelley Scholarship essay that I have written. It is completely true, and hopefully, this nursing scholarship essay example will give you a good idea of what we are looking for in a submission.

There are many reasons someone might choose to go into the nursing profession. Maybe they “want to help people”. Maybe they love math and science. Maybe they want to give back to their community. Maybe their mom was a nurse. Whatever the reason may be, for most of us, it’s different. I chose to go into nursing because of a personal experience that I had when I was young. I lost my biological father to colon cancer, and I wanted to be a caring support system for other families going through what we did. The strange thing about the many reasons people choose nursing, is that somehow, we are all still very connected in this choice.

You see, nursing is a profession where you have to take care of complete strangers, and we have signed on to do this for life.

Nursing is so incredibly unique and selfless in that what we do every single day is care for people who are at their most vulnerable moments, and we often times do it while missing something in our life that means something to us. We constantly sacrifice for our patients. We constantly give while barely taking. The most important thing to remember is that we don’t mind. That’s what makes us different. We know what we have gotten ourselves into, and we love doing it. There is a special place in a nurse’s heart that draws them to the type of work that we do. And it brings us all together, our binding character trait.

I think I can say now that I guess my reason for going into nursing is a combination of everyone’s reason. They may spark from different experience, but we are intertwined in our methodology for career choice through our heart for others. I am PROUD to be a nurse!

I want to remind any nurse reading this that nursing will continue to choose you throughout your career. It is so funny how nursing just pulls you out of your everyday life as if to say, “nope, you don’t get to be a civilian today, you’re still a nurse”! I’ll give you an example. Four days after I was crowned Miss Colorado I was driving in my crown and sash away from an appearance as a car flipped over on our interstate and started on fire. Of course, I pulled over. A fireman also pulled over (that special place in our hearts, other service industry members have that too!), and we collectively (after removing the crown and sash) helped pull this man from his car and start working on him. It was wild. I remember shaking my head thinking, “thanks a lot, nursing”, and then giggling. How lucky I am to have been chosen by this profession!

Nursing is the best. It will be a part of you forever.

NLN Foundation for Nursing Education Announces 2024 Scholarship Awards

17 graduate students in nursing share over $100,000.

Washington, DC — Seventeen advanced degree nursing students have been awarded a total of $114,645 in financial support through the annual competitive scholarship program run by the National League for Nursing Foundation for Nursing Education . These include the 2024 winner of the new NLN Steve Cerame Nurse Educator Scholarship Award of up to $8,000, honoring the former chief financial officer for his 26 years of dedicated service to the League.

In addition, there are a dozen recipients of foundation scholarships of up to $8,000 each; the winner of the Health Carousel Foundation Nurse Educator Scholarship Award of $8,000 to an international student pursing an advanced degree in nursing education in the U.S.; the winner of the Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo Scholarship of up to $5,000 for graduate study in informatics and innovation in the use of data analysis and health information technology; and the Cecelia Lou Vriheas Scholarship Award winner of $8,000. The presentation to the scholarship winners will take place during the 2024 NLN Education Summit in San Antonio, Texas, September 18-20.

“We are proud to sponsor another year of scholarship support to deserving students enrolled in advanced degree programs who are committed to pursuing careers in nursing education. Thanks to the generosity of our dedicated donors to the NLN Foundation, the total available funds have increased every year, now over $100,000, which enables us to expand the number and size of scholarship awards and also focus on some specialized areas of study within nursing education,” said NLN Foundation Chair Patrick Robinson, PhD, RN, ACRN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN, vice president of nursing at Pacific College of Health and Science.

NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, said, “Expanding the ranks of nurse faculty remains an urgent priority, helping the National League for Nursing to fulfill its mission to prepare a diverse nursing workforce to deliver outstanding and equitable care to advance the health of the nation and global community.”

The NLN Foundation Scholarship Awards Program seeks to support diverse nurses committed to careers in academic nursing education. Awards of up to $8,000 are made to nurses enrolled in accredited master’s or doctoral programs and have completed at least one year of advanced academic study toward their degrees.

The NLN Steve Cerame Nurse Educator Scholarship honors the National League for Nursing’s former chief financial officer and his 26 years of service, providing funds up to $8,000 annually to a future nurse educator in a master's or doctoral program. This scholarship is awarded to nurses pursuing advanced degrees to advance their career as a full-time nurse educator.

Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo Health Informatics and Innovation Scholarship Award: $5,000

With a focus on informatics and innovation in the use of data analysis and health information technology, the Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo scholarship opens a new avenue of scholarship to support the National League for Nursing and its members. Multiple real-world applications of these research studies are urgently needed. A scholarship of up to $5,000 is offered annually to support an applicant enrolled in an accredited graduate-level program in this growing field of nursing education.

Cecelia Lou Vriheas Scholarship Award: $8,000

The Cecelia Lou Scholarship is a single $8,000 scholarship awarded to nurses pursuing advanced degrees to advance their career as a full-time nurse educator who are the first in their family to pursue higher education and belong to an historically marginalized/excluded group, including but not limited to Black, Indigenous, Native American, Pacific Islander, immigrant populations, and those from rural areas.

Nursing in Russia is a four-year undergraduate program; postgraduate nursing education is not yet widely available in the country. The First Moscow State Medical University, also known as Sechenov University, was founded in 1758 and is the country’s pioneer and oldest medical school. Over the years, the institute faced numerous challenges, which necessitated numerous reconstruction and rebuilding projects. It did not receive university status until 2010, after which it was named the top medical school in the country by the QS World University Ranking in 2017. Nursing education and training at the postgraduate level were only established in 1991.

It was granted autonomy in 2012 for the development, implementation, and administration of its educational program.

RUDN University is also one of the best nursing schools in Russia. Its nursing program, which is part of the institute of medicine, was established with a curriculum that focuses on providing competencies in medical skill, administration, and research. 3. Perm State Medical University

The First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg was founded as the Medical Institute for Women in 1897. It was the first institution in Europe to provide opportunities for women to pursue higher medical education, and male students were not admitted until 1916. With its innovations in both diagnostics and treatment, the university has quickly established a recognized standard curriculum for medical education since its inception.

With its large campus and numerous research centers, the university has grown into a reputable university over the years. It is the city’s only medical school with an outpatient department. In addition, the university has international partners from all over the world with whom it collaborates on patient care, education, and research.
