Nibunan movie review: Arjun Sarja’s 150th movie doesn’t surprise you — for good, or worse
Nibunan movie review: the movie progresses at a considerable pace, only mildly hampered by the romance between kalidas (arjun sarja) and shilpa (shruthi hariharan). the cinematography, while plays mildly with colours, is fairly straightforward..
Nibunan movie cast: Arjun Sarja, Prasanna, Varalakshmi Sarathkumar, Vaibhav, Sruthi Hariharan Nibunan movie director: Arun Vaidyanathan Nibunan star rating: 2.5 stars
The first 15-20 minutes of Nibunan clearly establishes the kind of movie it aspires to be. There is plenty of action, several moments where DSP Ranjith Kalidas (Arjun Sarja) gets to play the saviour. (In fact, the camera lingers on Kalidas’ gun for a few seconds before it pans to his face.) Right from the opening sequence, Kalidas is the knight in shining armour, who swoops in and saves the day; irrespective of whether it’s his colleagues Joseph (Prasanna) or Vandhana (Varalakshmi Sarathkumar) who get stuck or someone else.
Kalidas’ infallibility stretches across realms. Consider the exchange between the Superintendent and Kalidas. The former is in a conversation with a higher official about a case that requires the force’s best man. The SP calls Kalidas, who is in middle of an assignment, and asks how long the latter will take to accomplish his task. Kalidas, in response, explains that he has to neutralise four armed men in a building. “You can speak to him in 5 minutes,” remarks the SP to the higher official, with no shadow of doubt or question.
The same ‘reverence’ for Kalidas is maintained by all characters throughout the movie, minimising the suspense the screenplay offers. He is not just the perfect cop; he is also the loving husband, father and the friendly brother (He also cooks well). Hence, as the movie progresses the thrills are underwhelming, despite Kalidas painstakingly piecing the puzzle together. How can something go wrong when Kalidas is around?
Three bizarre murders with inexplicable clues; corpses with masks, dressed in costumes – one killer; forms the crux of Nibunan. Lithe, agile, precise, it is fitting that the Action King plays a cop in his 150th film. He could have done it blindfolded and he does it well too. The rest of film’s casting, interestingly, works both for and against the movie. Our expectations from the well-known ensemble keep us engrossed, only to have a bitter sweet ending.
The movie progresses at a considerable pace, only mildly hampered by the romance between Kalidas and Shilpa (Shruthi Hariharan). The cinematography, while plays mildly with colours, is fairly straightforward.
On the whole, Nibunan feels like the middle bencher in school. It doesn’t surprise you, for good or for worse.

18-year-old Praggnanandhaa from India defeated world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen for the first time in a classical game at the Norway Chess tournament. He also ended the day at the top of the open standings, while Vaishali topped the women's standings. Carlsen's risky opening backfired, and despite being caught off guard, Praggnanandhaa managed to put pressure on the five-time world champion.

‘Nibunan’ Review: A Pacy Quest For An Underwhelming Killer
Nibunan does one thing effectively – it engages. Never mind the off-the-mark humour (Prasanna does a rhyme that goes ‘ Achamillai achamillai achamenbadhillaye, biryani endhan urimaye’ ), a psychotic killer who is a serious letdown, and a plot that bears a strange yet striking resemblance to the Talwar murder.
This movie keeps you hooked.
For a while, the theatre hangs on Arjun’s every word. He’s heading a team of officers – Prasanna as Joseph and Varalaxmi as Vandhana – who have been appointed to investigate a disappearance, and subsequently, a murder. They’re being thwarted by the killer at every turn.
A killer who is on a murdering spree, exhibits all signs of being a maniac, and leaves obscure, yet seemingly interconnected clues about his next target.
Early on, Nibunan establishes the kind of specialist DSP Ranjit Kalidoss is. Emerging from a high-octane gun fight in an abandoned building – the opening scene of the movie – three officers share a light moment on the road-side. The DSP casually wonders if the woman officer’s earrings are new. ‘ Kazhugu kannu’ , she says Next, he wins a game at a party, nimbly fixes up a dismantled gun well before his younger colleagues can.
DSP Ranjith Kalidoss, Nibunan tells us, is quick of mind and eye, and deft with weapons. So, it wouldn’t really take him long to establish motive for the series of murders that has everyone puzzled. A social activist, a woman doctor who had seemingly done nothing to warrant the brutal torture that she was subjected to, and a lawyer.
The only laugh out loud moment in Nibunan also belongs to Prasanna. He’s investigating at the site of the murder when he’s seized by a sudden suspicion.
Officer Joseph brings back the witness he was interrogating, asks him what he was doing there in the middle of the night. I work shifts, the witness says, and audibly mutters something about inefficient constables. Officer Jo is incensed, and the DSP chides the witness for calling him a constable, perhaps to the ire of real constables in the audience.
Kolai senjavungula vitturunga , the witness mutters again.
Nibunan , which stars Suhasini Mani Ratnam in a cameo, draws quite a bit on the 2008 Aarush Talwar murder. It features a set of busy and worldly parents who give their child everything, except their time. The teenager, starved for affection, engages in an illicit relationship with the domestic help. The father deals with the situation by picking up one of his golf clubs, the weapon of choice, which is later recovered from the golf course.
Journalist Avirook Sen, in his book titled Aarushi , explains the kind of societal judgment that the parents of the slain girl – perceived to be high-society dentists – were subjected to, even by the cops.
Sen notes in his book that the police found it strange that the mother remained dry-eyed on the day of the murder, and that her responses to the police were clipped. The couple’s marriage and their relationships were called into question. Allegations were slapped against them. All because their lifestyle was one the cops did not understand.
Nibunan switches out the dentists for architects, but leaves the details intact. It points to a consensual relationship between the teenager and the help, and subsequently retells the murder with its own theories.
The parents arrive home from a cancelled party, only to walk in on their daughter and the help. The mother, while on her way up to check on her daughter, is heard remarking that the evening hadn’t been a complete waste, after all – they got to drive around in their new car.
That’s the trope that Nibunan subscribes to.
The movie’s script reaches out to please the masses, while also being inclusive of the filmmaker’s tastes. There’s fast-paced action, mystery, romance that infantilises the woman, an affliction that the hero needs to overcome, quirks – Arjun’s, Varalaxmi’s, the killer’s – and the psychotic killer himself, who is the disappointment.
For all the haunting music, and the zodiac codes that he deals in, Kreshna in blacks and a hood, driving a Scorpio with a scorpion for a dashboard toy is completely underwhelming. You expect to see someone you don’t: an old woman perhaps, who doesn’t have an obvious motive, or a lovely little twist akin to Adhe Kangal , or a nurse-turned-murderer that one of those Kurt Wallander novels features.

But all that Nibunan serves up in the end, is Kreshna, trying his best to be psychotic.
For someone who masks his victims with the zodiac head of the next, you’d at least expect to see a string of odd gems around his neck – à la Vijay Sethupathi in Vikram Vedha .
Whatever happened to god-fearing villains, anyway?

Nibunan Movie Review: Nibunan Review, Nibunan Movie Review, Nibunan Audience Ratings, Nibunan Film Review
When setting out to make Nibunan, director Arun Vaidyanathan seem to have the plot points clearly laid out. For ardent cinema fans who love great detailing in a movie, this flick is a treat to watch as there is something to look out for in every other scene.
Arjun’s 150 th film, produced by Passion Studios had definitely left its mark felt for a long time to come. Nibunan is a superb fit for the young looking actor who has done phenomenal justice to the role. Be it a confident cop hunting down the criminal or a friendly teammate with his colleagues, Arjun’s charming looks and presence makes the film enjoyable throughout the run time.
Serial killing is what the entire plot is based on and it is up to the team led by Arjun including Varalaxmi and Prasanna to find the motive of the killer. For audiences who may have watched Malayalam movies, it might sound familiar but for the Tamil audience it is a fun ride with lots of twists and turns as the team unveils the secrets by making use of even the smallest clue they get.
Every time, the killer murders a person he leaves a trial of evidences which are confusing yet makes sense if you look at it in the right direction. Arjun works while overcoming his personal issues and the need to protect his colleagues in this dangerous mission. The less you know about the film’s plotline, the more fun it will be in the theaters.
Playing a cop is a walk in the park for action king Arjun who breezes through the role with ease. He’s simply mature, handsome and most importantly provides the right level of seriousness throughout the investigation. An equally impressive performance is lent by Prasanna and Varalaxmi. While the former is soft spoken and a deep thinker, the latter shares her ideas openly all the time while being fun whenever the scenes would allow.
Nibunan is more about the story and doesn’t have any unnecessary songs or deviations making it believable right from the start. While the film does tend to lag in scenes where the emotional aspect of Arjun’s family is revealed, it does cope up once the story picks pace again in the second half. Background score by Navin elevates scenes to a spine chilling moment while DOP Arvind Krishna has done a clean job of maintaining the gloomy mood.
· Arjun’s energetic and plausible screen presence as an investigative officer
· Brilliant supporting cast by Prasanna and Varalaxmi
· Musical score by Navin renders the right mood to many important scenes
· Director Arun Vaidyanathan’s story and screenplay
Thumbs Down
· The part where the story slows down showcasing family sentiments could be trimmed down
Verdict – An engaging investigative thriller
Verdict: An engaging investigative thriller

Nibunan movie review: Mild thrills aside, this Arjun film is mostly predictable
Arun vaidyanathan, who made smashing tamil directorial debut with achchamundu achchamundu, falters with nibunan. this arjun starrer gets predictable and tedious beyond a point..
Film: Nibunan Director: Arun Vaidyanathan Cast: Arjun, Prasanna, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar, Suman, Suhasini, Sruthi Hariharan Rating: 2.5/5
Nibunan, on many levels, is one of those thrillers that don’t fully work to its potential. It works till a point, and just when you start really enjoying its proceedings, it gets predictable and slightly tedious, leaving us not fully satisfied. It’s a whodunit thriller that needed more tension and an actor who could send chills down our spines as the psycho killer on the loose. While you hold on to your seats, scratching your head and wondering who could be the killer, you’re not shocked when his identity is revealed.
Arun Vaidyanathan made a smashing Tamil directorial debut a few years with a film called Achchamundu Achchamundu, a social thriller set in the US and centred on a pedophile. While it wasn’t a box-office phenomenal, it surely made head turns and marked the arrival of filmmaker willing to go against the grain. Four years after his directorial debut, Arun won over audiences and critics by bankrolling Kalyana Samayal Saadham, an adult-comedy about a guy with performance anxiety. Not only was the film well received, it proved that adult comedies need not always have to be about double entendres.
Nibunan follows a police team led by Arjun who plays Ranjith Kalidoss, in pursuit of a serial killer. Arjun suffers from a rare disease, and this is the angle the film doesn’t fully cash in on, for it could have been an excellent thriller if dealt creatively. It’s an angle that’s merely used to prove that the film attempts something different just for the heck of it, to prove to audiences it isn’t another regular whodunit thriller. Sadly, that’s exactly how the film turns out to be, despite showing promise quite early on.
Nibunan is Action King Arjun’s 150th film and it’s a relief to watch him to play his age, even in overtly sophisticated look throughout the film. He doesn’t go around beating bad guys to pulp, but plays his part well and shows he could still impress without kicking butts. Prasanna plays one of Arjun’s team members and he gives the story some comical touch. While some of the jokes work, it’s tough to imagine them laughing and joking around when a serial killer is on the prowl. Agreed, certain cinematic liberties are allowed but a more serious setting, in my opinion, would have worked in the favour of the film.

Ranjith Kalidoss is a DSP in CB-CID, who along with Inspectors Joseph and Vandana, takes on high-profile cases and closes them successfully. Counter to his high intensity job, Ranjith has a peaceful family life with his wife, Shilpa, daughter Oviya, younger brother Sandeep, and their family dog Rocky. Ranjith's superiors assigns his team a task to pursue a group of 5 criminals, who continue to avoid justice with their political and economic influence. Ranjith suggests a more direct approach to taking them out, but his superior declines to go along with it. Before they could pursue the current assignment, they get dragged into another mystery. A parcel arrives at the police station one day that contains a small horse doll hanging on a noose. The figure has 4 holes, but otherwise no other clues.
Not thinking much of it, the team decides to ignore it. A few days later, Shivanand, a local communist leader, goes missing and is later found in the warehouse hanging from the ceiling, tortured and his face covered in an animal mask, very much like the doll they received. Meanwhile, Ranjith is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease that compromises his job, and his happiness with his family is strained. The killer continues to taunt the team by sending clues as he kills more people, which includes Vishnu, a lawyer and Dr. Ramya, a pathologist. Ranjith follows one of the clues and finds the killer, but before he could take him down, the tremors that he has been experiencing lately slow him down. The killer knocks out Ranjith and escapes.
When his team arrives, they inform him about a dead body in one of the buildings, but he already knows and describes what he would find without seeing it, also deduces that he himself is the killer's next target. Back at the office, Ranjith manages to piece things together and connects the serial killings to a case that he investigated a few years earlier. Emmanuel and his wife are a rich architect couple in town, who lived with their 16-year-old daughter Catherine and a caretaker Mariadas. The couple were very successful business people, but had very little time for their daughter. Mariadas took care of Catherine. One day, the couple came home to find Catherine murdered and Mariadas missing. The house had been ransacked. The police closes the case concluding that it was a burglary gone bad, and Mariadas is on the run.
Shivanand pushes to reopen the case, which lands with Ranjith. He quickly focuses the attention on Emmanuel, where he sees a new golf club in his bag, and his investigation leads to the missing golf club with the caretaker's blood on it. He interrogates Emmanuel and his wife with the evidence, and they confess the truth. They came home one day to find Mariadas having sex with Catherine. Catherine only reached puberty a few days earlier, and their parents were busy preparing for the puberty ceremony. Enraged, Emmanuel hits Mariadas with the club and kills him. When Catherine threatens to call the police, her mother tries to stop her. In the scuffle, she accidentally falls on a sharp object and dies. Not able to wiggle their way out (as Ranjith and Vishnu refuse to take bribes and hush up the truth) and driven by guilt, Emmanuel and his wife hang themselves. Dr. Ramya is involved in the autopsy of Catherine, and the prosecutor is set to argue the case at the court and is present with Ranjith during the interrogation and confession.
While all this is happening, Ranjith finds a doll hanging outside his house. When coming back, his dog Rocky was shot in the head. The killer is someone seeking vengeance for the deaths of the couple and is probably connected to the family. His boss takes over the case and tells Ranjith to get medical help for his condition. Joseph and Vandana continues the investigation, looking for a connection between Ranjith's case and the murders. There were no other family members that could be the murderer. Emmanuel has a nephew named Christopher, but he lives in the US. They are looking for someone with pharmaceutical knowledge, as the killer manufactured his own brand of anesthesia to knock out his victims.
Ranjith gets admitted to the hospital, where he continues to crack the clues, he concludes that it must be Christopher, as he has the motive, means and the know how. After checking with immigration services, they learn that Christopher did arrive in India not too long ago. A cop is dispatched to Christopher's house to investigate, and he finds all the evidence supporting their theory, but before he could alert his team, he is killed. Christopher baits Ranjith's team and captures Joseph and Vandana. Having no choice, Ranjith leaves the hospital to meet Christopher at a warehouse. There, he finds Joseph and Vandana standing on the floor with nooses around their necks. After a long struggle, Ranjith manages to overpower Christopher and hangs him. The press arrives at the site, and Ranjith tells them that Christopher is another victim of the serial killer.
A few days later, Joseph and Vandana meet Ranjith at his house and ask him why he did not inform the press that Christopher was the serial killer. Ranjith then reveals his plan about their earlier assignment. He plans to kill the five criminals and blame it on the serial killer, and also frame the last of them as the serial killer himself. Later, it is shown that his plan worked.
