Homework is an important part of your education and thus, in a modern world, a key to a happier and more prosperous future. If you are having trouble with homework, you should take action immediately. Seek support from your friends and family. Reconsider how you spend your time. Perhaps, most importantly, organize your work so that you know exactly what you need to do and when you need to have it down.

Creating an Environment Conducive to Your Success

Step 1 Ask for help.

  • Ask your parents. They know you well enough to diagnose the issue. They also might be able to help you organize your time and remind you of homework assignments. You should however, refrain from getting them involved in actually completing your homework. [1] X Research source
  • For more perspectives, ask friends who know you well or people close to you at school who have experience with your study habits. If you are involved in extracurricular activities, ask peers in the same groups if they have trouble with homework and how they manage it.

Step 2 Minimize distractions.

  • If you set aside this time and you find yourself constantly distracted by your computer or a video game, your problem might be a bad habit. Focus your energy on trying to break the habit.
  • If you find it impossible to set aside this time, the problem might be your schedule. Take some time to make a schedule. You might find that you will need to drop some of your activities to make time for homework.
  • Try to get your parents involved in homework time. Encourage them to be quiet to minimize distractions. Ask them for help, but don’t get them to do your homework for you.

Step 3 Find your motivation.

  • If this does not work, try set up some sort of external motivation. Ask your parents to reward—or punish—you according to your performance in school. [3] X Research source

Step 4 Work with your teachers.

  • If you are forgetting homework, try to participate in class and do well on quizzes to bring up your grade.

Step 5 Talk to a professional.

Organizing Your Homework

Step 1 Create a planner.

  • Sometimes we procrastinate because we are afraid of failure. You need to conquer these fears. Even great writers have terrible first drafts. The process of editing is how bad writing becomes good. If you are too afraid of failure to start early, failure is precisely what you will get.
  • If procrastination is a problem, consider creating a designated work space, free of distractions. Leave your books and other work material around. If your environment is telling you to work, your brain might just get the message. • Seek advice and accept help. Remember that a wise man becomes wiser because he listens. Do your best to listen to your family's advice or your friend’s advice as this might help you in tight spots. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • It's best you stay healthy as much as possible. It's time to eat those yummy vitamins and minerals. You need as much energy as you can to do your tasks at school. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 1
  • Maintain a suitable environment. The people around you count! It's hard to progress when your "friends" constantly get you into unnecessary trouble. Surround yourself with people that understand you, and like you for who you are, and of course you are comfortable with. Your friends will be there to back you up and support you and better yet if you made the right choices your friends will be a great support in school. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

I left my homework at home! How many times have you said this? It’s a terrible feeling to know you’re going to get a failing grade on homework after you actually did the work. It seems so unfair!

There are ways to prevent this dilemma and others, but you must be willing to prepare ahead of time to save yourself from future headaches. The most important thing you can do to avoid a dilemma like this is to establish a strong routine.

Once you form a strong, consistent homework pattern , you will avoid many of the big problems, like leaving a perfectly good assignment at home.

Establish a Homework Base

Does your homework have a home? Is there a special place where you always put your paperwork each night? To avoid forgetting your homework, you must establish a strong homework routine with a special homework station where you work each night.

Then you must get in the habit of putting your homework where it belongs right after you finish it, whether this is in a special folder on your desk or in your backpack.

One idea is to put the completed assignment in your backpack and leave the backpack right beside the door.

Buy a Homework Bell

This is one of those ideas that sounds silly, but it really works!

Go to a business supply store and find a counter bell, like those you see on store counters. Place this bell in the homework station and work it into your homework routine. Each night once all the homework is completed and in its proper place (like your backpack), give the bell a ring.

The ringing of the bell will let everyone know that you (and your siblings) are ready for the next school day. The bell will become a familiar sound and one that your family will recognize as an official end to homework time.

Use Your Email

Email is a great invention for writers. Each and every time you write an essay or other assignments on the computer , you should get in the habit of sending yourself a copy via email. This can be a real lifesaver!

Simply open your email as soon as you finish your document, then send yourself a copy by attachment. You’ll be able to access this assignment from anywhere. If you forget it, no problem. Just go to the library, open, and print.

Home Fax Machine

The fax machine can be another lifesaver. These contraptions have become very affordable lately, and they can come in quite handy for parents as well as students in a time of crisis. If ever you forget an assignment, you might be able to call home and have a parent or sibling fax your assignment to the school office.

It may be a good time to talk with your parents about investing in a home fax machine if you don’t have one already. It’s worth a try!

Put a Checklist by the Door

Try putting a checklist somewhere conspicuous where you and/or your parents will see it each morning. Include homework, lunch money, personal items, anything you need each day. Remember, it’s the routine that makes this work.

Be creative! You can put a checklist by the front door, or perhaps you prefer someplace more interesting. Why not place a sticky note on the back of your cereal box each time you open a new one?

Tips to get students remember to turn in homework

Homework Reminder Ideas

Towards the end of last year, my son started to have problems with his homework. The issue was not the assignment themselves. He would complete the assignments on time, but then he would frequently forget to turn them in, which would result in reduced grades. As a parent, this was more frustrating to us than not doing the assignment itself.

We didn’t want to jump to the conclusion that our son was a scatterbrain, forgetful or even he didn’t care. We’ve tried to determine the factors causing this issue. We asked him questions every time when he forgot to turn in his homework:

  • Was there a dropbox or bin that he should have turned the assignment in?
  • Did the teacher ask them to bring their assignments?
  • Did the teacher make announcements when they collect them?
  • Did the teacher assign a student to pick the completed homework up?
  • Did he notice other kids hand their assignments in at all?

Eventually, we came to the conclusion that the situation was a combination of “lack of organizing”, “varying methods of collecting the assignments by teachers” and “forgetfulness”. We started with “lack of organizing” and “forgetfulness”. We offered few alternative options of solutions he could use and he picked whatever he thought would work for him. The keyword is “simplify”. Kids have so many responsibilities and so many distractions these days, picking a suitable solution for oneself is essential. Simple solutions are the best.

Organizing is about being aware of what one has in their environment. It can be their backpack, desk or locker etc. I wasn’t the most organized student myself either. So I can relate. When you are not an inherently organized person, you need to be taught methods and given tools to function. If you or your children have “scatterbrain” or “forgetfulness” problem, organizing by sorting, grouping, ordering, and labeling is your remedy. I highly recommend you to take a look at the 5S Methodology .

expandable folder for schoolwork

Expandable Folder:  My son uses his expandable folder to keep track of his paper based homework. He organized his folder by labeling them for a specific purpose, such as “ new homework “, “ homework to turn in “, “ work in progress ” and “ graded homework ” etc. The important point though is for the student to open the folder up every day at school and at home and go through it, check appropriate sections and take action on it.

At my kids’ school, homework is posted online on Google classroom. All homework have deadlines. They needed to track when each assignment is due, not only to remember the time to turn them in but also prioritize and plan their time to do their homework on time.

Homework Schedule on Whiteboard

Online Calendars: It’s forbidden to use cell phones at their school but laptops are widely used. We use online Google calendars for all of our scheduling but in my humble opinion, excessive use of electronics and online resources for school work cause more distraction for students. Especially, if your kids are having hard time focus as is. There is already so much use of the internet, whether it is classroom portals, online learning websites, e-mailing and messaging for classroom projects. It’s healthier to keep some of the efforts offline.

Homework Reminder Wristbands

Post it notes:  You can use post-it notes on a pencil box, folder or another item that student definitely takes out of their backpacks every day. Post-it note should trigger action to turn the homework in.

Locker checklist: If the student has a locker at school, they can create a reminder note, laminate and put it up visibly in their locker. Every time, they visit their locker, they’ll see the note and make sure all their assignments handed in and all their new homework material is put in their backpack.

Final check before school dismissal : Getting into the habit of going through a checklist at the time when they are packing their backpacks before going home is a great way to work the executive functioning part of those growing brains. This can be with the help of an exact same note as the locker checklist, or merely a mental checklist:

  • Did I turn in all my assignments?
  • Did I put in all new assignments in my folder?
  • Did I pack all necessary notebooks and books to complete my assignments?

COMMUNICATING WITH THE TEACHER

It’s also important to talk to the teachers to learn their preferred method of collecting the assignments. During the parent-teacher conferences, we talked to the teachers as well. We asked to have a standard method of turning in the assignments if they varied so that the students would know what is expected. It’s confusing for the students when one day the teachers announce to turn in the assignments, the other day they just assume the homework will be turned into a bin without making an announcement.

We also advised our son to go up to the teacher before the end of the session and ask whether he should turn in the homework if he is in doubt. It is his responsibility to let the teacher know he has completed his assignment on time and has it ready by its due date.

ONLINE HOMEWORK

Online homework is rather easier with one precaution. If homework is an online lesson, the homework is considered submitted when the lesson is complete. However, if an online document needs to be submitted, that has to go on time as well. The same organizing and reminder methods can be used. Also, some portals have check marks to notify the completion of the assignment. The student should have a final review the portal daily before closing down the homework session to make sure they checked all completed assignments as DONE.

I am happy to report that he’s currently in control of turning the assignments on time using these organizing and reminder methods.

Do you have similar issues with your children? If you use any of these methods and find helpful or use other methods which work, please share them in the comments.

I don’t understand why teachers cannot just ask the students to turn in their homework. Why is that so hard? Even my college professors, all of them, reminded us to turn in our homework assignments.

I also think that the teachers should remind there students at the end of the day before leaving the classroom to remember all there home work, especially for those students that have problems remembering homework, even before middle school years,to help them start making it a habit.

While studying can differ for different age groups, many of the things that get in the way are the same. Whether it's your environment or time management skills, it easy for things to discourage you from finishing your homework. With a little organization and help, your homework can become approachable.

Managing Your Time

Step 1 Set aside a specific time to do your homework.

  • For instance, try setting aside a time you know you can work well such as an hour or 2 before dinner, or if you're a night owl, after dinner.

Step 2 Take a break every hour.

  • Work in hour blocks, with 50 minutes spent studying and 10 minutes spent taking a break.
  • It can also be helpful to move around when you are taking your break, especially if you are working at a screen. Go for a walk outside to get your blood circulating and enjoy some fresh air.
  • You might also want to eat a healthy snack on your break to improve your focus. Avoid junk food and choose something like a handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, veggies, or a small portion of cottage cheese.

Step 3 Prioritize tasks.

  • Identify which assignments are worth the most points for each class. Most likely these will take the longest to complete. [5] X Research source
  • Consider how long you have to do each project, and if possible, see when the assignment is introduced. Oftentimes, primary and secondary school classes do not have syllabi, so it might be harder to plan out an entire term, but if you are in college, you will most likely have a syllabus with at least a partial course schedule. Knowing how long you have to complete an assignment will help you prioritize which assignments to do first. You can also ask the teacher how long you have to complete an assignment. [6] X Research source

Step 4 Create a study schedule.

  • Use highlighters or stickers to mark which assignments are most important.
  • If you're using an online or mobile schedule, create alerts or notifications for the projects and any time-sensitive steps for those projects.

Step 5 Make sure to complete the most pressing assignments first.

  • Don't let a big project overshadow the smaller assignments you need to complete!

Step 6 Break down larger projects into manageable tasks.

  • Assignment outlines can help you visualize the necessary tasks to get the assignment done.

Step 7 Don't multitask.

Creating a Productive Work Environment

Step 1 Find a comfortable, but not too comfortable, place to work.

  • A desk or table would be a better location than a couch or a bed.

Step 2 Minimize social distractions.

  • Turn your phone off or on silent (not vibrate). It might be best to put the phone out of sight, or in another room while you work, as the temptation to text or get on social media can be as much of a distraction as actually using social media.
  • Use an app that blocks social media. There are plenty of applications out there that can help block social media and other distracting sites (such as shopping or gaming sites). [10] X Trustworthy Source Pew Research Center Nonpartisan thinktank conducting research and providing information on public opinion, demographic trends, and social trends Go to source

Step 3 Minimize noise.

  • Use a white noise app to block out noise.
  • Use earplugs or noise-blocking earmuffs. [12] X Research source
  • Work in a quiet place, such as a library or a home office, if you have one.
  • Avoid listening to music while studying. Studies have shown that although listening to music while studying lowers overall performance, this does not affect everyone equally. [13] X Research source However listening to music before studying has been shown to improve performance on cognitive tasks. [14] X Research source

Step 4 Write down why you need to finish your homework.

Using Your Resources

Step 1 Ask your parents or peers for help.

  • If you're too afraid to ask a teacher during class, see if you can stay behind to ask your questions.

Step 3 Find a tutor (if available).

  • First, contact your school to see if there are any after-school tutoring programs. While not all primary and secondary schools offer tutoring, a vast majority of universities do. If your school does not offer tutoring, they may know of other resources for you to contact.
  • Then, contact your library to see if they offer any tutoring. [18] X Research source
  • In some areas, there may also be free community tutoring programs. Contact your local community center for more information.
  • There are plenty of private tutors out there as well, but they can be costly (ranging from $20 to $100 an hour). [19] X Research source You can find tutors online through a number of websites, such as Craigslist or Angie's list.

Step 4 Go to the library.

  • If you need to work at a library after school, ask your parents or search the web to find your local library.

“I Left My Homework at Home!”

Have you ever arrived at school and discovered that you left your homework at home …or your lunch money, gym shoes, library books, permission slip for next week’s field trip…?

If you think it is annoying forgetting these things, your parents and teachers find it even more frustrating! The good news is that it is fairly easy to become better prepared for school. You just need to develop a few simple routines.

Action Plan

Step 1: Put your homework away as soon as you finish each assignment. Do not wait until the next morning or even later in the evening. When you finish something, put it away –in the correct folder- immediately! This will prevent your papers from being lost in the wrong folder, falling off the table and sliding under the refrigerator, sticking to your younger brother’s book and going to school with him, or simply being forgotten.

Step 2: Get ready for school before you go to bed. Mornings are almost always rushed and hectic, so it becomes very likely that you will forget something important at home. Instead of waiting until morning, develop the habit of collecting everything you need the night before school. Gather all of your books, folders, and notebooks together and pack them into your book bag. You should also set out your clothes, shoes, jacket, and any other things you will need for school the next day.

Step 3: Do a “double-check” every morning. Create a list of everything you need for each day of the week and post it on your door. In addition to the standard things you need every day like your book bag, your list should also remind you about library books that are due on Tuesday, gym shoes that you need for Thursday, etc. You can access a free “Night Before School Tool” here . Ask an adult to help you download and customize the chart at this website. Then, post it on your door and check it every morning before you leave for school.

In Conclusion

It does not take much effort to become better prepared for school. When you are better prepared, your school days will go much more smoothly, your parents and teachers will be much happier, and your grades will likely improve as you turn more assignments in on time!

Would you mind turning down the volume of your radio, please? 3. Would you mind not talking on your cellphone? I am trying to concentrate on my studies. They are all correct. Note that Barb did ask you to limit it to three or four questions in any one post. You posted eight. I dealt with it only because they were all correct. If I had had to make amendments, corrections and explanations, I would not have done it to eight at a time.

Questions 7-13.

Which person says it’s better not to look at his phone while he’s doing his homework?

Which person sometimes does homework with a friend?

Which person tells his family when he is working?

Which person says that there must be enough light in his room so he can work?

Which person thinks that listening to music helps with homework?

Which person works in the morning and evening?

Which person says it’s easier to do homework now than it was before?

Advice on doing homework

I don’t mind doing homework, especially when I play some jazz (and not pop) on my phone. When I do, I’m able to think more carefully about what I’m doing. Sometimes I really enjoy doing my homework, especially when it’s maths and I understand it well. Or when one of my classmates comes to my place and we study together. I find it’s best if I let my parents and sister know I’m busy so they don’t come into my room and spend all evening talking to me!

When I started doing my homework in my room every morning, it wasn’t a great success. I always found something more interesting to do! But these days, I don’t have the same problem. I just go to my room in the evening, switch on the light, sit down at my desk and do it. I do love music, but if I put my MP3 player on, I start to think about the song and not the homework! So I don’t listen while I work. It’s the same problem if my mum or dad put music on in the next room. I turn my mobile off or put it away before I start. That helps too.

Jackson, 14

I usually do most of my homework before I go to bed. And then I do a bit more as soon as I wake up. I’ve always found it easy to do that. I’ll maybe look at my German vocabulary for five minutes before breakfast. I tell my friends at school: ‘If you want to do your homework well, make sure your room is nice and bright. Otherwise, you’ll fall asleep!’

Starting photography

By Mrs Howeels, Class 3D teacher

Have you ever wanted to take better pictures of your family, of your dinner or of your cat? Well, I can help you. In fact, that’s what makes photography such a fantastic hobby. It doesn’t matter if you have a nice new camera or just use your phone. We photographers are always trying to improve. We want today’s to be more interesting than yesterday’s.

In my photography classes, I’ll show you how to find your own style, not just take the same photos as all your friends. But you’ll need to be out of bed early and take pictures in the best light, before it gets too bright. We’ll talk more about light in Week 1.

Actually, I’ve never read a book about photography, and I get bored watching videos on the net. I started to understand more about photography by looking at my own photos. I thought about what was wrong with them and decided how to do better next time. And in Week 2, I’ll ask you to do the same with photos you have taken.

Do you want to know what I think? I don’t think there’s anyone who can’t take amazing photos. Not everyone wants to, and that’s cool. But if you do, come along to Room 4D on Wednesdays after lunch from 1:30 to 2:00.

14    Why does Mrs Howells enjoy photography?

A   She loves using her new camera.

B   She likes taking photos of her family.

C   She enjoys trying to take better pictures.

15    What advice does Mrs Howells give?

A   Take pictures with your friends.

B   Don’t take photos if it is dark.

C   Take photos early in the morning.

16    How did Mrs Howells learn about photography?

        A   from books

        B   from her mistakes

C   from videos on the web

17    Mrs Howells believes that

        A   everybody should learn photography.

B   photography is a great hobby for everyone.

C   everybody can take good photos if they want to.

18   Why has Mrs Howells written this text?

A   to ask pupils what they like photographing

B   to sell pupils about a photography course

C   to answer pupils’ questions about photography

It was Sarah’s school sports day and she was really nervous. ‘Don’t worry, it’ll be OK!’ said her mum to her. At the start of her race, Sarah and the other girls said ‘Good luck’ to each other. ‘I’ll need it,’ thought Sarah to herself, because the other girls were all really fast.

What Students Are Saying About What It’s Like to Be Back in School

Many teenagers are back in school for the first time since March 2020. Whether they’re happy to be there or not, most agree nothing feels “normal.”

james forgot homework before going to school

By The Learning Network

Welcome to the first edition of Current Events Conversation for the 2021-2022 school year. Every Thursday we editors round up some of the best teenage comments posted to our recent writing prompts , both to give those students and their schools a shout-out and to offer a snapshot of what young people around the country — and, often, around the world — are thinking about issues in the news.

Usually we choose three different prompts, but sometimes one question garners so much interesting response that we focus a whole edition just on a single conversation. That’s what happened this week when we asked, “ What’s It Like to Be Back in School? ” Boy did our audience have thoughts.

For many, it is the first time they have been back in a classroom since March 2020. Some are thrilled to be with their peers and teachers again, while others have had a hard time adjusting. But most agreed that going back to school in an ongoing pandemic feels “far from normal.” As one disoriented student in North Carolina wrote, after 18 months in the same light-blue hoodie, the first day back “honestly felt like a field trip.”

If you would like to see your comment featured in a future roundup, just post a response to any of our writing prompts, whether our Student Opinion questions or our Picture Prompts , and follow these tips:

Don’t worry that you have to submit a perfectly polished essay; instead, we want to hear your honest thoughts expressed in your unique voice.

Share personal stories related to the prompt that include relevant and compelling details.

State an opinion that’s supported by strong evidence or reason, either from the article you read or your own experiences.

Offer a unique take or perspective on the topic that you don’t see others talking about.

Start a conversation with other students by hitting the “reply” button. Ask questions, share connections or add onto what they said.

Follow The Times commenting standards and be thoughtful about how your response might be read by others.

Thank you to all the teenagers from around the world who got this year off to a strong start — we heard from students in Sacramento, Calif.; Korea; John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, N.C. , and many more places. Keep reading to see what they had to say.

Please note: All student comments have been lightly edited for length, but otherwise appear as they were originally submitted.

Many students told us they’re already stressed.

Chairs with green legs stacked on tables in a school classroom

With the school summer holidays in full swing, students and teachers both are enjoying a well-earned break from the classroom.

Whether you’re off on holiday, chilling out at home or doing something else entirely, the summer holiday is the longest one of the year , with a whole six weeks looming before the new academic year starts.

If part of your plans for this year’s break involve buying school uniform and making sure everything is ready for the autumn term, you’ll be wanting to know when school begins so you have everything in time.

When does the next school term start – and what are the dates for the next school year?

When does the new school term start?

Students will return to school in England and Wales in the week commencing Monday September 2.

This may vary by a day or two depending on your school – some may have an extra day’s holiday due to inset days, while some years may begin earlier than others if they have induction days – but the majority of schools will return that week.

You should check with your child’s school to confirm the exact date of the start of term, and whether all students are returning on the same day.

JUNIOR PUPIL AMAZED BY MATHS ON CLASSROOM WHITEBOARD
