Towards the end of last year, my son started to have problems with his homework. The issue was not the assignment themselves. He would complete the assignments on time, but then he would frequently forget to turn them in, which would result in reduced grades. As a parent, this was more frustrating to us than not doing the assignment itself.
We didn’t want to jump to the conclusion that our son was a scatterbrain, forgetful or even he didn’t care. We’ve tried to determine the factors causing this issue. We asked him questions every time when he forgot to turn in his homework:
Eventually, we came to the conclusion that the situation was a combination of “lack of organizing”, “varying methods of collecting the assignments by teachers” and “forgetfulness”. We started with “lack of organizing” and “forgetfulness”. We offered few alternative options of solutions he could use and he picked whatever he thought would work for him. The keyword is “simplify”. Kids have so many responsibilities and so many distractions these days, picking a suitable solution for oneself is essential. Simple solutions are the best.
Organizing is about being aware of what one has in their environment. It can be their backpack, desk or locker etc. I wasn’t the most organized student myself either. So I can relate. When you are not an inherently organized person, you need to be taught methods and given tools to function. If you or your children have “scatterbrain” or “forgetfulness” problem, organizing by sorting, grouping, ordering, and labeling is your remedy. I highly recommend you to take a look at the 5S Methodology .
Expandable Folder: My son uses his expandable folder to keep track of his paper based homework. He organized his folder by labeling them for a specific purpose, such as “ new homework “, “ homework to turn in “, “ work in progress ” and “ graded homework ” etc. The important point though is for the student to open the folder up every day at school and at home and go through it, check appropriate sections and take action on it.
At my kids’ school, homework is posted online on Google classroom. All homework have deadlines. They needed to track when each assignment is due, not only to remember the time to turn them in but also prioritize and plan their time to do their homework on time.
Online Calendars: It’s forbidden to use cell phones at their school but laptops are widely used. We use online Google calendars for all of our scheduling but in my humble opinion, excessive use of electronics and online resources for school work cause more distraction for students. Especially, if your kids are having hard time focus as is. There is already so much use of the internet, whether it is classroom portals, online learning websites, e-mailing and messaging for classroom projects. It’s healthier to keep some of the efforts offline.
Post it notes: You can use post-it notes on a pencil box, folder or another item that student definitely takes out of their backpacks every day. Post-it note should trigger action to turn the homework in.
Locker checklist: If the student has a locker at school, they can create a reminder note, laminate and put it up visibly in their locker. Every time, they visit their locker, they’ll see the note and make sure all their assignments handed in and all their new homework material is put in their backpack.
Final check before school dismissal : Getting into the habit of going through a checklist at the time when they are packing their backpacks before going home is a great way to work the executive functioning part of those growing brains. This can be with the help of an exact same note as the locker checklist, or merely a mental checklist:
It’s also important to talk to the teachers to learn their preferred method of collecting the assignments. During the parent-teacher conferences, we talked to the teachers as well. We asked to have a standard method of turning in the assignments if they varied so that the students would know what is expected. It’s confusing for the students when one day the teachers announce to turn in the assignments, the other day they just assume the homework will be turned into a bin without making an announcement.
We also advised our son to go up to the teacher before the end of the session and ask whether he should turn in the homework if he is in doubt. It is his responsibility to let the teacher know he has completed his assignment on time and has it ready by its due date.
Online homework is rather easier with one precaution. If homework is an online lesson, the homework is considered submitted when the lesson is complete. However, if an online document needs to be submitted, that has to go on time as well. The same organizing and reminder methods can be used. Also, some portals have check marks to notify the completion of the assignment. The student should have a final review the portal daily before closing down the homework session to make sure they checked all completed assignments as DONE.
I am happy to report that he’s currently in control of turning the assignments on time using these organizing and reminder methods.

I haven’t tried anything yet, but I will be. These are helpful ideas. My daughter just transitioned to middle and is struggling keeping up with assignments and turning them in.
I don’t understand why teachers cannot just ask the students to turn in their homework. Why is that so hard? Even my college professors, all of them, reminded us to turn in our homework assignments.
I also think that the teachers should remind there students at the end of the day before leaving the classroom to remember all there home work, especially for those students that have problems remembering homework, even before middle school years,to help them start making it a habit.

While studying can differ for different age groups, many of the things that get in the way are the same. Whether it's your environment or time management skills, it easy for things to discourage you from finishing your homework. With a little organization and help, your homework can become approachable.

Develop the tech skills you need for work and life

Have you ever arrived at school and discovered that you left your homework at home …or your lunch money, gym shoes, library books, permission slip for next week’s field trip…?
If you think it is annoying forgetting these things, your parents and teachers find it even more frustrating! The good news is that it is fairly easy to become better prepared for school. You just need to develop a few simple routines.
Step 1: Put your homework away as soon as you finish each assignment. Do not wait until the next morning or even later in the evening. When you finish something, put it away –in the correct folder- immediately! This will prevent your papers from being lost in the wrong folder, falling off the table and sliding under the refrigerator, sticking to your younger brother’s book and going to school with him, or simply being forgotten.
Step 2: Get ready for school before you go to bed. Mornings are almost always rushed and hectic, so it becomes very likely that you will forget something important at home. Instead of waiting until morning, develop the habit of collecting everything you need the night before school. Gather all of your books, folders, and notebooks together and pack them into your book bag. You should also set out your clothes, shoes, jacket, and any other things you will need for school the next day.
Step 3: Do a “double-check” every morning. Create a list of everything you need for each day of the week and post it on your door. In addition to the standard things you need every day like your book bag, your list should also remind you about library books that are due on Tuesday, gym shoes that you need for Thursday, etc. You can access a free “Night Before School Tool” here . Ask an adult to help you download and customize the chart at this website. Then, post it on your door and check it every morning before you leave for school.
It does not take much effort to become better prepared for school. When you are better prepared, your school days will go much more smoothly, your parents and teachers will be much happier, and your grades will likely improve as you turn more assignments in on time!

They are all correct. Note that Barb did ask you to limit it to three or four questions in any one post. You posted eight. I dealt with it only because they were all correct. If I had had to make amendments, corrections and explanations, I would not have done it to eight at a time.

Advice on doing homework
I don’t mind doing homework, especially when I play some jazz (and not pop) on my phone. When I do, I’m able to think more carefully about what I’m doing. Sometimes I really enjoy doing my homework, especially when it’s maths and I understand it well. Or when one of my classmates comes to my place and we study together. I find it’s best if I let my parents and sister know I’m busy so they don’t come into my room and spend all evening talking to me!
When I started doing my homework in my room every morning, it wasn’t a great success. I always found something more interesting to do! But these days, I don’t have the same problem. I just go to my room in the evening, switch on the light, sit down at my desk and do it. I do love music, but if I put my MP3 player on, I start to think about the song and not the homework! So I don’t listen while I work. It’s the same problem if my mum or dad put music on in the next room. I turn my mobile off or put it away before I start. That helps too.
Jackson, 14
I usually do most of my homework before I go to bed. And then I do a bit more as soon as I wake up. I’ve always found it easy to do that. I’ll maybe look at my German vocabulary for five minutes before breakfast. I tell my friends at school: ‘If you want to do your homework well, make sure your room is nice and bright. Otherwise, you’ll fall asleep!’

Starting photography
By Mrs Howeels, Class 3D teacher
Have you ever wanted to take better pictures of your family, of your dinner or of your cat? Well, I can help you. In fact, that’s what makes photography such a fantastic hobby. It doesn’t matter if you have a nice new camera or just use your phone. We photographers are always trying to improve. We want today’s to be more interesting than yesterday’s.
In my photography classes, I’ll show you how to find your own style, not just take the same photos as all your friends. But you’ll need to be out of bed early and take pictures in the best light, before it gets too bright. We’ll talk more about light in Week 1.
Actually, I’ve never read a book about photography, and I get bored watching videos on the net. I started to understand more about photography by looking at my own photos. I thought about what was wrong with them and decided how to do better next time. And in Week 2, I’ll ask you to do the same with photos you have taken.
Do you want to know what I think? I don’t think there’s anyone who can’t take amazing photos. Not everyone wants to, and that’s cool. But if you do, come along to Room 4D on Wednesdays after lunch from 1:30 to 2:00.

Many teenagers are back in school for the first time since March 2020. Whether they’re happy to be there or not, most agree nothing feels “normal.”
By The Learning Network
Welcome to the first edition of Current Events Conversation for the 2021-2022 school year. Every Thursday we editors round up some of the best teenage comments posted to our recent writing prompts , both to give those students and their schools a shout-out and to offer a snapshot of what young people around the country — and, often, around the world — are thinking about issues in the news.
Usually we choose three different prompts, but sometimes one question garners so much interesting response that we focus a whole edition just on a single conversation. That’s what happened this week when we asked, “ What’s It Like to Be Back in School? ” Boy did our audience have thoughts.
For many, it is the first time they have been back in a classroom since March 2020. Some are thrilled to be with their peers and teachers again, while others have had a hard time adjusting. But most agreed that going back to school in an ongoing pandemic feels “far from normal.” As one disoriented student in North Carolina wrote, after 18 months in the same light-blue hoodie, the first day back “honestly felt like a field trip.”
If you would like to see your comment featured in a future roundup, just post a response to any of our writing prompts, whether our Student Opinion questions or our Picture Prompts , and follow these tips:
Don’t worry that you have to submit a perfectly polished essay; instead, we want to hear your honest thoughts expressed in your unique voice.
Share personal stories related to the prompt that include relevant and compelling details.
State an opinion that’s supported by strong evidence or reason, either from the article you read or your own experiences.
Offer a unique take or perspective on the topic that you don’t see others talking about.
Start a conversation with other students by hitting the “reply” button. Ask questions, share connections or add onto what they said.
Follow The Times commenting standards and be thoughtful about how your response might be read by others.
Thank you to all the teenagers from around the world who got this year off to a strong start — we heard from students in Sacramento, Calif.; Korea; John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, N.C. , and many more places. Keep reading to see what they had to say.
Please note: All student comments have been lightly edited for length, but otherwise appear as they were originally submitted.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
With the school summer holidays in full swing, students and teachers both are enjoying a well-earned break from the classroom.
Whether you’re off on holiday, chilling out at home or doing something else entirely, the summer holiday is the longest one of the year , with a whole six weeks looming before the new academic year starts.
If part of your plans for this year’s break involve buying school uniform and making sure everything is ready for the autumn term, you’ll be wanting to know when school begins so you have everything in time.
When does the next school term start – and what are the dates for the next school year?
Students will return to school in England and Wales in the week commencing Monday September 2.
This may vary by a day or two depending on your school – some may have an extra day’s holiday due to inset days, while some years may begin earlier than others if they have induction days – but the majority of schools will return that week.
You should check with your child’s school to confirm the exact date of the start of term, and whether all students are returning on the same day.
The calendar is a little different in Scotland , with the school holidays starting much earlier and school returning on Wednesday August 14.
Meanwhile in Northern Ireland the term begins around Monday September 2.
Half-term in England and Wales, meanwhile, is from Monday October 28-Friday November 1, while in Scotland it is from Monday October 14, with school resuming on Monday October 21.
Here’s how the term dates are looking for the next year:
