The second example helps us visualize this situation and is more illustrative of the writer’s personality. Because she stayed awake to care for the cat, we can infer that she is a compassionate person who cares about animals. We don’t get the same depth with the first example. 

6. Don’t be afraid to show off… 

You should always put your best foot forward—the whole point of your essay is to market yourself to colleges. This isn’t the time to be shy about your accomplishments, skills, or qualities. 

7. …While also maintaining humility 

But don’t brag. Demonstrate humility when discussing your achievements. In the example above, for instance, the author discusses her accomplishments while noting that her parents thought of her as immature. This is a great way to show humility while still highlighting that she was able to prove her parents wrong.

8. Be vulnerable 

Vulnerability goes hand in hand with humility and authenticity. Don’t shy away from exploring how your experience affected you and the feelings you experienced. This, too, will help your story come to life. 

Here’s an excerpt from a Common App essay that demonstrates vulnerability and allows us to connect with the writer:  

“You ruined my life!” After months of quiet anger, my brother finally confronted me. To my shame, I had been appallingly ignorant of his pain. 

Despite being twins, Max and I are profoundly different. Having intellectual interests from a young age that, well, interested very few of my peers, I often felt out of step in comparison with my highly-social brother. Everything appeared to come effortlessly for Max and, while we share an extremely tight bond, his frequent time away with friends left me feeling more and more alone as we grew older.

In this essay, the writer isn’t afraid to share his insecurities and feelings with us. He states that he had been “ appallingly ignorant ” of his brother’s pain, that he “ often felt out of step ” compared to his brother, and that he had felt “ more and more alone ” over time. These are all emotions that you may not necessarily share with someone you just met, but it’s exactly this vulnerability that makes the essay more raw and relatable. 

9. Don’t lie or hyperbolize 

This essay is about the authentic you. Lying or hyperbolizing to make yourself sound better will not only make your essay—and entire application—less genuine, but it will also weaken it. More than likely, it will be obvious that you’re exaggerating. Plus, if colleges later find out that you haven’t been truthful in any part of your application, it’s grounds for revoking your acceptance or even expulsion if you’ve already matriculated. 

10. Avoid cliches 

How the COVID-19 pandemic changed your life. A sports victory as a metaphor for your journey. How a pet death altered your entire outlook. Admissions officers have seen more essays on these topics than they can possibly count. Unless you have a truly unique angle, then it’s in your best interest to avoid them. Learn which topics are cliche and how to fix them . 

11. Proofread 

This is a critical step. Even a small error can break your essay, however amazing it is otherwise. Make sure you read it over carefully, and get another set of eyes (or two or three other sets of eyes), just in case.

12. Abstain from using AI

There are a handful of good reasons to avoid using artificial intelligence (AI) to write your college essay. Most importantly, it’s dishonest and likely to be not very good; AI-generated essays are generally formulaic, generic, and boring—everything you’re trying to avoid being.   The purpose of the college essay is to share what makes you unique and highlight your personal experiences and perspectives, something that AI can’t capture.

13. Use parents as advisors, not editors

The voice of an adult is different from that of a high schooler and admissions committees are experts at spotting the writing of parents. Parents can play a valuable role in creating your college essay—advising, proofreading, and providing encouragement during those stressful moments. However, they should not write or edit your college essay with their words.

14. Have a hook

Admissions committees have a lot of essays to read and getting their attention is essential for standing out among a crowded field of applicants. A great hook captures your reader’s imagination and encourages them to keep reading your essay. Start strong, first impressions are everything!

15. Give them something to remember

The ending of your college essay is just as important as the beginning. Give your reader something to remember by composing an engaging and punchy paragraph or line—called a kicker in journalism—that ties everything you’ve written above together.

Admissions officers read thousands of essays each application season, and they may devote as little as five minutes to reviewing a student’s entire application. That means it’s critical to have a well-structured essay with a compelling introduction. As you write and revise your essay , look for opportunities to make your introduction more engaging.

There’s one golden rule for a great introduction: don’t give too much away . Your reader shouldn’t be able to guess the entire trajectory of the essay after reading the first sentence. A striking or unexpected opening captures the reader’s attention, raises questions, and makes them want to keep reading to the end .

A great introduction often has an element of mystery. Consider the following opening statement.

This opener is unexpected, even bizarre—what could this student be getting at? How can you be bad at breathing?

The student goes on to describe her experience with asthma and how it has affected her life. It’s not a strange topic, but the introduction is certainly intriguing. This sentence keeps the admissions officer reading, giving the student more of an opportunity to keep their attention and make her point.

In a sea of essays with standard openings such as “One life-changing experience for me was …” or “I overcame an obstacle when …,” this introduction stands out. The student could have used either of those more generic introductions, but neither would have been as successful.

This type of introduction is a true “hook”—it’s highly attention-grabbing, and the reader has to keep reading to understand.

If your topic doesn’t lend itself to such a surprising opener, you can also start with a vivid, specific description.

Many essays focus on a particular experience, and describing one moment from that experience can draw the reader in. You could focus on small details of what you could see and feel, or drop the reader right into the middle of the story with dialogue or action.

Some students choose to write more broadly about themselves and use some sort of object or metaphor as the focus. If that’s the type of essay you’d like to write, you can describe that object in vivid detail, encouraging the reader to imagine it.

Cliché essay introductions express ideas that are stereotypical or generally thought of as conventional wisdom. Ideas like “My family made me who I am today” or “I accomplished my goals through hard work and determination” may genuinely reflect your life experience, but they aren’t unique or particularly insightful.

Unoriginal essay introductions are easily forgotten and don’t demonstrate a high level of creative thinking. A college essay is intended to give insight into the personality and background of an applicant, so a standard, one-size-fits-all introduction may lead admissions officers to think they are dealing with a standard, unremarkable applicant.

Quotes can often fall into the category of cliché essay openers. There are some circumstances in which using a quote might make sense—for example, you could quote an important piece of advice or insight from someone important in your life. But for most essays, quotes aren’t necessary, and they may make your essay seem uninspired.

We may have a stupor under such an influx of uncertainties, and the description of ourselves will be poor, both in content and presentation.

Therefore, we propose to make an approximate template of a high-quality story about yourself and include in it all the potentially important points and chips.

Your first sentence should look something like this:

"My name is Anna Johnson, I'm a graphic designer - I make logos that everyone remembers. I'm looking for a job in a company that will value my skills and accept me into its team."

As you can see, you need to give your name and job title. You can specify the position you want to hold, as well as the college you graduated from and your educational degree.

Make a list of abstracts about your experience, skills, achievements, as well as think about cases that you can tell.

You can use interesting ideas, humor, self-irony, find some connection to the situation around or the event in which the meeting takes place. A person who sees us for the first time should remember us thanks to such a killer feature. Then it will be an example of a successful self-introduction.

For example: I am an accountant with 10 years of experience - I keep accounts so that no tax will find flaws.

Self-presentation text is aimed at a specific goal. An example of such a "target" is an open vacancy, a promotion, or a useful acquaintance.

In order to achieve our goals, we must take into account the goals of the person to whom we present ourselves. This person usually has a very simple point: to determine what he or she can take from us, either professionally or personally.

Therefore, the main rule of self-introduction is to focus not on our characteristics and regalia but on what we can be useful to a person.

Conclude your essay with a sentence that will lead you to your goal. For example, if your aim is to get a job, the essay should end like this: "I'm sure I have enough skills and experience to fill a vacancy. Your company will only benefit by hiring me."

• First, your killer feature should be mentioned in the essay, but only in one sentence. All other information should relate to your professional experience and the qualities required to hold the position you are applying for.
• Second, you will talk about your successes and achievements in previous work or classes. It is important to explain, thanks to what knowledge, qualities, and traits of character you reached them. Because the admission committee is not interested in how good a student you used to be, but in what you can do for college with your knowledge. And a good self-presentation at an interview is an example of what you can be useful for.
• Third, prepare a story about the accomplishments you are most proud of because you are more likely to be asked about them.
• Fourth, if you do not have the experience, tell a story or several about how quickly you learned and developed the skills needed in the position.

Whether you're writing an essay about yourself for a scholarship, a self-introduction, or a personal bio for a job application, coming up with the right words to capture what makes you unique can feel challenging. Writing of the Autobiographical Nature

• Bad: I like sports.
• Ok: I'm a fan of basketball, football, tennis, and soccer.
• Good: My favorite sport is football, both to watch and to play.
• Better: When I was growing up, I would watch Big Ten football with my dad and brothers every Saturday, before we'd go outside and toss the football around. I've loved it ever since.

• Braggy: I'm the best and most dynamic worker at my company right now, so you should want to hire me for my talents.
• Humble: I was lucky enough to be awarded three employee of the month awards at my current job. Turns out it was a company record.

Writing Personal Essays for School

• Common themes or prompts for autobiographical essays include overcoming obstacles, great successes or spectacular failures, and what you learned about yourself.

• Depending on the assignment, you may need to connect a personal anecdote to a reading or an idea from class. Start brainstorming topics that are connected to that idea, to give yourself a variety of options to choose from.

• Common autobiographical essay cliches include sports stories, mission trips, and dead grandmothers. While these can all make for excellent essays if done well, it is difficult to stand out when telling the story of how your lacrosse team lost a big game, then practiced hard, then won. It has been written before.

• If you want to tell the story of your nasty break-up, start with the break-up, do not start with the star-crossed way you met. You have got to get immediately to the tension in the story.

• When you have an idea of your topic, start writing a "memory list" of specific things that you remember about the event. What was the weather like? What did it smell like? What did your mother say to you?
• Your opening paragraph will set the tone for the rest of the essay. Rather than telling the dull biographical details (your name, your place of birth, your favorite food), find a way to express the essence of the story you are going to tell and the themes you are going to explore in your essay.

Writing a Cover Letter for an Application

• Outline your qualifications and highlight your talents in a cover letter.
• Write about who you are.
• In a cover letter, describe how your education and experience qualifies you for this position.
• Explain how this opportunity will benefit your career goals.

• When in doubt, keep it brief and serious. If you are unsure whether or not telling an amusing anecdote about your friend's bachelor party is appropriate in a cover letter, it is probably best to leave it out.

• "I'm writing to apply for the entry-level position with Company Inc. advertised on your website. I think my experience and training makes me an ideal candidate for this position."
• Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to include your name in the body of the letter: "My name is John Smith and I am applying...." Your name will be included in the signature , as well as the header of a cover letter, so there is no need to put it in the text itself.

• Who you are and where you come from.
• Where you want to go.
• How this opportunity would potentially help you get there.

• Be as specific as possible. It is alright to note that you are "A passionate leader in all walks of life" but it would be much better to write about an example of a time you lead in a surprising way.
• Stay focused on skills and talents that connect specifically to the thing you are applying for. Extracurricular involvement, leadership roles, and other types of outstanding achievement may be important to you personally, but it may be totally extraneous. If you include something, ensure to connect it specifically to the goal of the cover letter.

• Be as specific as possible. If you are writing a university cover letter, it is obvious that you have to have a degree to get a job as a doctor, but how did you come to choose this field? Why did you choose this school? What, specifically, do you want to take away from the experience?

• Be careful about using a cover letter to critique a business. It is not the time to describe the suffering of a particular brand over the previous fiscal quarter, then promising that you will be able to turn it around with your ideas. That might not go over well if you are hired, and then you are unable to live up to the promise.

• Even if it is impressive, a high GPA or class ranking does not belong in a cover letter. Highlight it on your resume, but do not include it in two different places of the application.

• Mailing address
• Telephone and/or fax number

Expert Trick : Save time and effort by creating one generic format that you can use for many different job applications by tweaking the specific content for each one. Start with a general introductory paragraph , then a section or two fleshing out your resume and expertise as it relates to the job, and finish it off with a closing paragraph and a note of thanks.

Writing a Short Biography Note

• Pretend you are writing about someone else. Write your name and start describing that person like a character or a friend: "John Smith is the Executive Vice President of Company Inc..."

• If you are a jack of all trades, say so. Do not be afraid to list "actor, musician, mother, motivational speaker, and professional rock climber" if they all apply equally.

• It is common to list degrees that you have received. Pay particular attention to anything that ties into the work you are writing about. If you have special training, include it here.

• "John Smith is the Executive Vice President of Company Inc., in charge of marketing and overseas acquisitions. He received an MBA with distinction from Harvard and lives in Montauk with his cat Cheeto."
• Do not overshare. It can seem funny to immediately start with "John Smith loves rafting and hates eating Cheetos. He's a total boss" and such bio notes can be appropriate for some venues, however be careful to avoid awkward oversharing. Telling everyone about your killer hangover might be best left for after work talk.

• Stephen King, who is one of the most successful and popular authors in recent history, has a bio note that just lists the name of his family members, his hometown, and his pets. Consider leaving out the self-congratulation entirely.

A little flattery goes a long way! I like to have three to five points about myself memorized when meeting someone for the first time in an interview setting. So, for me, if someone says, “ Tell me about yourself “, I can reply with, “I grew up in Connecticut and have been in New York City for 14 years, I’m a middle child, I love to travel, cooking, and hiking, I am not afraid of a challenge and I find that I do my best work when I get to work with clients and build relationships”. To sum it up, have an elevator pitch to go along with the brand you promoted over email!

For anyone who gets nervous meeting new people, I suggest practicing in front of a mirror or doing mock interviews with a friend or relative. For virtual interviews (so many are being done on Zoom these days), you can do a mock version by doing a video recording on your phone and looking it over. A few minutes before the actual interview, try a technique called box breathing to calm your nerves.

Having this language knowledge will be extremely helpful for Japanese learners as it will help you establish yourself among Japanese friends and colleagues.

In this guide, we will look at the basic essential phrases first and then move on to variations of those phrases. You will also learn the proper etiquette and cultural pointers to help you introduce yourself well.

Basic self-introduction in Japanese

The three basic and essential phrases you need to know are as follows:

Hajimemashite (はじめまして) (Nice to meet you.)

[-name-] desu ([name] です) (I am [name].)

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu (よろしくお願いします) ( Please treat me well. )

Using these three phrases as one set is the most concise and also the best approach for your self introduction in Japanese. They should also be easy to remember, and they are just enough to introduce yourself in a polite manner.

Once you’ve mastered these three phrases, you will be all set. This may be much easier than what you were expecting, considering the stereotype of Japanese people as being extremely polite and having many rules for social interaction.

Although there are other versions of these phrases, we will first look at the basic phrases and discuss their cultural aspects. Let's have a look at each phrase one by one.

Hajimemashite (はじめまして)

When you meet someone for the first time, the very first word you need to start with is hajimemashite (はじめまして). This greeting word originates from the word hajimete , which means ‘for the first time.’ Hajimemashite would be the equivalent of ‘nice to meet you’ in English.

We say hajimemashite at the beginning of a self-introduction, and it is suitable when meeting anyone, regardless of age or status.

Stating your name

The simplest way to state your name is by saying “[name] desu. ” You can simply state your name and end with the word desu. A direct translation of this would be, “I am [name].”

Apart from this simple phrase, you can also use phrases such as “[name] to mōshimasu ” ([name] と申します). In this version, you are stating your name in a humble way – this is a version to keep in mind when you find yourself in more formal situations.

You may notice that there is no Japanese word for ‘I’ or ’my’ in these phrases. If you would like to include these words, you can say one of the following two sentences:

• Watashi wa [name] desu . (私は [name] です)
• Watashi wa [name] to mōshimasu. (私は [name] と申します)

Although it is not at all grammatically wrong to say ‘ watashi wa ,’ bear in mind that Japanese people rarely use ‘ watashi ’ in conversation as it is easily understood from the context. When introducing yourself, ‘ watashi wa ’ can be omitted to make it sound more natural to a native Japanese.

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu (よろしくお願いします)

Let’s now look into the phrase yoroshiku onegaishimasu . The word yoroshiku (よろしく) is an adverb that literally means ‘well.’ The expression onegaishimasu (お願いします) is used to ask someone to do something for you.

Therefore, yoroshiku onegaishimasu (よろしくお願いします) can be translated as “Please treat me well” or “Please take care of me.” Some even translate it as “Don’t be too harsh on me.”

This expression can also be used in situations other than self-introductions. For example, you can use it at the end of an email, especially in a business situation , as a way of signing off. Since it does not have a precise English translation, it might be difficult to grasp the meaning. It generally refers to an action that will take place in the future, and it expresses gratitude or a request in a polite manner.

In short, yoroshiku onegaishimasu (よろしくお願いします) is a phrase that you will encounter in a variety of situations, but for now just remember how it is used to introduce yourself.

A magic word of response

There is a magic word you can use as a response that is definitely worth remembering! The phrase kochirakoso (こちらこそ) is such a useful way to respond to expressions like yoroshiku onegaishimasu (よろしくお願いします).

Kochirakoso (こちらこそ) comes from the words kochira (こちら) and koso (こそ). The word kochira (こちら) is a demonstrative pronoun used to refer to something close to the speaker in a polite and humble manner. It can be translated as ‘me,’ ‘us’ and so on. The word koso (こそ) is a particle to emphasize the preceding word.

We use the phrase kochirakoso (こちらこそ) when we want to say the same thing someone just said to us. It is very similar to English phrases like ‘you too,’ ‘me too,’ ‘likewise,’ and ‘same here.’

When someone introduces themselves to you and ends their introduction with yoroshiku onegaishimasu , it is your turn to reply with this magic word.

The first expression, “ Oai dekite ureshii desu ,” is the most informal. The word oai (お会い) is a form of the verb aimasu (会います), which means ‘to meet’ or ‘to see’ someone. Dekite is from the modal auxiliary verb dekimasu (できます), which means ‘can’ or ‘be able to.’ And the phrase ureshii desu (嬉しいです) means ‘I’m happy.’

The whole expression implies that you have been wanting to meet this person as well. If you are meeting the person for the second time or more, you can add the word mata (また), which means ‘again,’ and say, “ Mata oai dekite ureshii desu ” (またお会いできて嬉しいです), meaning “I am pleased to see you again.”

The second expression, “ Ome ni kakarete ureshii desu ” (お目にかかれて嬉しいです), is slightly more polite, and “ Ome ni kakarete kōei desu ” (お目にかかれて光栄です)’ is the most polite of the three expressions.

Describing yourself

One way is to mention the name of your country and add the word jin (人). For example, you could say ‘American’ as ‘ amerika jin ’ (アメリカ人), ‘British’ as ‘ igirisu jin ’ (イギリス人), and so on. You just need to remember how to say your country’s name in Japanese.

Another way to state your origin is to use the word shusshin (出身), which means ‘originated from’ in English, and form one of the following sentences:

Shusshin wa tōkyō desu. (出身は 東京です) (I’m from Tokyo.)

S husshin wa igirisu no rondon desu. (出身は イギリスのロンドンです) (I’m from London, England.)

As you can see, when we use the word shusshin (出身), we can mention not only our home country but also our hometown.

“How are you?” in Japanese

Asking someone “How are you?” is a simple greeting commonly used in English, and it can be a good phrase to start a conversation. You may be tempted to ask “How are you?” in Japanese as well, but this is not common as it is considered slightly too direct or unnatural. Especially with new people you meet, you should never ask this question as it may sound rude. It can only be used when you know the person and have not seen them for a while.

If you do ask this question, be aware that it is considered polite in Japan to express humility, so even if the person feels great, you may receive a modest answer such as 'so-so.'

Japanese introduction etiquette

Under my leadership, the team at [Content Agency] was able to attract multiple ASX-listed clients and developed multiple award-winning advertising campaigns to drive engagement and conversions, with the majority of my clients enjoying at least 200% increases in lead generation.
