Basketball More Than Any Sport Played on

Basketball, more than any sport played on a major scale in America, characterizes the plight of Blacks in their struggle to acquire equality as a race. Basketball has proven to be an area of society where Blacks have not only obtained equality but have managed to demonstrate a remarkable superiority. On the confines of a small competitive surface, Blacks have exhibited their talent, their creativity, and their physical energy. In his essay, The Black and White Truth about Basketball, author Jeff Greenfield examines this phenomenon. Greenfield does so by basing many of comments on racial stereotypes but, nevertheless, his comments touch home on many levels. Written in 1975, many years before Blacks began to dominate the sport like they have today, Greenfield was prophetic in his comments and, thereby, demonstrating that the stereotypes that he utilized in making his points may not be stereotypes at all but definable facts. Greenfield argues in….

How to Motivate Basketball Players

Motivate N.B.A basketball players The game of basketball, primarily, involves the continuous struggle of the teams for about 45 minutes in defending their sides, while striking the ball at the demarcated floor, hanging on and throwing efficiently to the basket. The team success is intensified through reducing their faults and making the opponent team to commit errors. Contrary to the game of football, basketball seems to involve many such faults. The opponent team gains scores when the ball is turned over, when a free throw is misdirected, when the team members commit personal errors and leaves the buckets, etc. Giving away opportunities to opponent teams to gain the scores easily mark the failure of the team. (Trace Fields Basketball Handicapping Techniques) Even though it has been laid down that the seasonal success of NBA is determined by victory at least in one championship however, most of the team members of….

Killer Bees Is a Basketball Team in

Killer Bees is a basketball team in a small town in New York named Bridgehampton. The team has only 7 players on the floor of 41 students in the entire school (Energy Team 2004). Yet they rally around their coach to win games against taller, more talented and well recognized players from surrounding communities. John Niles is one of the coaches of the team, who explains the players as dedicated to a single purpose. Based on the descriptions of a high performance team, the Killer Bees fit the bill. They have the right combination of accountability, commitment, and athleticism with each player complementing the skill set of the others (Energy Team 2004). orking Group Any high performance team starts out as a working team that is made up of a group of people that have to complete a job. Leadership Qualities and Characteristics of Successful Basketball Coaches

Leadership in Sports Smehra Leadership Qualities and Characteristics of Successful asketball Coaches Vince Lombardi once said, "Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result" (Website, 2004). Lombardi is still considered the epitome of the over-achieving coach who wanted nothing but results, and got them through pure grit and determination. In 1958, he started coaching the Packers when they were a 1-10 record team, and within a year, had turned them into the record breaking, double Super owl winning team that has become a legacy in NFL achievements. Lombardi is just one example of a successful sport coach, still he is a common example given in many leadership seminars, and often quoted by coaches as they determine their own successful leadership styles and systems of coaching. So, what is it that makes a coach successful, and what particular….

Ex-asketball Player" by John Updike analyzes a former high-school basketball's life after he has graduated and introduced to the "real world." "Ex-asketball Player" allows the reader to empathize with Flick Webb, the poem's subject, and see how Flick's life has changed and how it still remains the same. "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden explores similar issues of change and focuses on the sacrifices made in order to live life. A metaphor of Flick's basketball career can be seen in the layout of Pearl Street where the gas station he works at is located. The layout of the street echoes the movements a basketball player. Like a basketball player would maneuver a basketball court, traversing from one side to the other, stopping to decide his next move before finally taking a shot, "Pearl Avenue runs past the high-school lot,/ends with the trolley tracks, and stops, cut off/efore it has a….

The league marketing teams have also experimented with more interactive experiences with passive spectators, focused experiencers and absorbed identifiers through the use of social media. The role of social media in any experiential marketing strategy must be predicated on audience participation that is so convincing that it inspires AIDA to be attained in a marketing strategy (Bernoff, Li, 2008). Further, the role of social media can create the strongest of fall links between those evaluating an experientially-driven brand and those that choose to become an active audience….

NBA Lockout 2011 the National Basketball Association

NBA Lockout 2011 The National Basketball Association (NBA) locked out NBA Players on July 2011. According to the U.S. Professional Sports Market & Franchise Value Report (12), this situation occurred when the owners and players were not able to create a new collective agreement (CBA) before the expiration of the old CBA (Sheridan). This fourth lockout in the history of the National Basketball Association was 161 days long. It started from July 1st 2011 and ended on December 8th 2011. The reason behind this lockout was unsuccessful negotiations between the owners and players due to which they could not reach to an agreement. The owners claimed that their teams were losing, as a large part of the revenue, which they were, required paying as the salary to the players (Zegers). The problem was that the owners did not have enough proofs and evidence through which they could prove that they were losing….

News Story on Basketball Game

Wolves Shoot Down Kicks, 109-100 Hunters in Wisconsin, Montana and elsewhere have been given authorization to kill as many wolves as they can, despite protests from conservation groups that claim wolves are not yet ready to be removed from the "endangered species" list. Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, November 3, the New York Knickerbockers tried hard to kill the spirits -- and shoot down the momentum -- of the Minnesota Timberwolves, but in the end, Wolves were never really in danger of losing, and they topped the Knicks, 109-100. Why did the Knicks lose this game to the Wolves after surging ahead briefly? It is clear that when the Knicks allowed the Wolves 40 points in the first quarter, New York was in deep trouble, albeit they battled back. "The Knicks made their run and we responded and went back up again," said Wolves' head coach Rick Adelman. "The Knicks are a good team. Carmelo….

Free Agency in Basketball

Changing the Basketball Landscape Perhaps the most valued basketball player's representative that contributed to transforming the landscape of how athletes in this sport were compensated was Paul Silas. Interestingly enough, Silas worked for multiple of agencies that were intimately associated with basketball and player remuneration. He was actually a member of the Boston Celtics. Additionally, in 1975 he became the president of the National Basketball Player's association. During the middle of that decade, Silas was able to take a decidedly different approach to arbitration and its presentations which resulted in desirable compensation benefits in which "the players could claim a major victory" (Bradley, 2016). A Worthy Agreement Silas played an integral role in enabling the players in the NBPA to avoid an arbitration settlement shortly after taking over the presidency of this organization. His contribution to the way that he was able to alter the foundation upon which players were paid in this….

When LeBron James reaches free agent status on July 1 of this year, one of his first orders of business will be to announce his future home in basketball. One of the top contenders for James is the Philadelphia 76ers—a possibility that has been relatively controversial given the 76ers have been a “laughing stock in the NBA for years,” (Marcin 1). Yet the 76ers have also had an incredible season thus far, and have built a team made of fresh young talent. They have been called a “rapidly improving team” showing a tremendous amount of future promise, especially as young talent needs to be developed systematically (Stuter). This is exactly the kind of environment that would suit James, who has been called more than once “the greatest player ever to play,” (Zillgitt 1). James has been working hard with Cleveland but his talents would most likely be appreciated by the….

Essays About Basketball: Top 5 Examples and 7 Prompts

Among the many essays about basketball out there, how can you make yours stand out? See this article for examples and prompts that will aid you in writing.

Basketball is a famous sport that has been around for 131 years. It was invented by a Canadian physical education instructor named James Naismith with two objectives: to keep athletes playing indoors during winters and to have a safer sport compared to football.

Over the years, basketball has grown to be a loved sport worldwide. It’s why it’s not surprising that it’s a great subject to talk about in your essay.

Below are examples to learn more about the game and how you can effectively write essays about basketball:

1. What Basketball Taught Me by Josh of San Diego, California

2. essay on basketball –  a sport of agility and endurance by randhir singh, 3. national basketball association and the woman national basketball association by lewis rios, 4. basketball: then vs. now by jaime moss, 5. essay on the last shot by darcy frey by mamie olson, 1. the most important skills for basketball, 2. what i learned through basketball, 3. why do i like basketball, 4. my unforgettable basketball experience, 5. my life as a basketball player, 6. basketball book or movie review, 7. the negative side of basketball.

“I believe basketball has taught me many valuable life lessons, and perhaps more importantly, played a significant role in developing me into the successful student and employee I am today.”

The author talks about how he fell in love with the basketball game – from watching it on television to participating in competitive basketball. He took the game with him as he grew.

Through this sport, he learned many lessons, including commitment, responsibility, and teamwork. He expounds on how these values helped him through life through his essay. Finally, he ends his piece by encouraging others to try basketball or any sport to have motivation in life. For more, see these articles about basketball .

“Basketball is a sport of agility and endurance that develops by hand and eye co-ordination… Basketball even overtakes baseball as the unofficial American pastime.”

Singh reviews basketball rules and how they changed over time but with the same principles. He discusses the main rules and scenarios straightforwardly, making his essay short but informative. You may also be interested in these articles about baseball .

“Some of the differences between NBA basketball and WNBA basketball appear to be related to the differences in size or physical capacity of men and women… I think we can all come to the conclusion that no matter what the gender is or what the rules are, that both of them are out on the basketball court to just WIN.”

Rios’ essay focuses on the differences between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women’s NBA. Some of the things he mentions are ESPN and their basketball video game, where fewer people spend time on WNBA. Additionally, owners of WNBA significantly make less from their teams, thus having less to invest in or pay their players.

He also talks about some similarities between NBA and WNBA, including their popularity among fans. At the end of his essay, Rios hopes he has shared enough information with his readers about basketball.

“Other changes such as uniform colors, dunking rules, regulation on backboards… some over and over again until they became what they are today… Basketball is a great American sport, and perhaps one that requires the most skill along with a great mental game.”

Moss’ essay consists of James Naismith’s original 13 basketball rules and how these rules evolved. These modifications were done to make the game more efficient and fun. Some significant changes include dribbling, boundary lines, and pointing systems.

He also mentions the controversy surrounding the three-pointer and how it affected the other game rules. In the future, basketball’s rules will continue to develop.

“I do think basketball is a valid option for most students to escape poverty… Basketball may open a few doors but there’s still no guarantee.”

The author recounts what The Last Shot by Darcy Frey is all about, retelling the story of Russel, Tchaka, Stephon, and Cory, who lived in a dangerous neighborhood and found escape in basketball. She then relays her input of basketball, helping these characters stay out of trouble, but it still isn’t enough to prepare them for the lives they’ll have to endure.

She further expounds on the events in the book, centering on the direct relation between academics and basketball in the story. You might also be interested in these essays about volleyball .

7 Prompts on Essays About Basketball

After understanding more about the different subtopics of basketball, here are prompts that you can get inspiration from for your essay:

You don’t have to be a basketball player to know what skills are in demand for the game. You can simply be a fan or a casual spectator who knows how the game works. Tell your readers what you are so they can appreciate your essay from your point of view.

Essays About Basketball: What I learned through basketball

Dedication, commitment, and consistency are only some of the things you develop when you love a sport. If you’re not a player yourself, but a close relative is, you can relay what they told you about basketball.

For example, you can relate to what your father tells you when you watch basketball gameplays with him. He may say he loves a particular team because of their teamwork. He may also say it shows in their gameplay. Then, you can delve into what “teamwork” means.

Like the other prompts in this list, this particular prompt doesn’t need you to be a player. Instead, to give you an idea, you can share your experience with the game, such as watching gameplay and liking how the people cheer for the players.

You can also narrate how great the game was, not because the players are professionals but because they never give up.

If you’re a basketball player yourself, feel free to recount a scene that played out in one of your games that you will never forget. Describe how you got to that point and why. Include what it made you feel like then and what it makes you feel now.

If you expect non-players to read your piece, write in a way that non-players will understand by avoiding basketball jargon. Or you can briefly explain what those related terms mean, so every reader will understand why it’s a memory you hold dear.

If no one thing stands out for you during your time as a basketball player, you can still write about it in the general term. For instance, you can share how a day in your life went when you were a player.

There are many books, movies, and literary pieces that you can check out and write an essay about. If you have a favorite piece about basketball, briefly summarize it and list why you’re so fond of it. You can also persuade your readers to check out the book themselves through these prompts.

Are you new to persuasive writing? For help with this topic, read our guide explaining what is persuasive writing ?

You can write about the problems connected to the game to give your essay a different atmosphere, such as the potential injuries for players, bullying within a team, or how few only make it to professional basketball. You can talk about something you want to give attention to and let your readers know your thoughts on it.

On the other hand, you can also share a bad experience related to basketball, like your father preferring to watch basketball on television than play with you and your siblings.

Here’s a great tip: If writing an essay sounds like a lot of work, simplify it. Write a simple 5 paragraph essay instead.

In conclusion, basketball is more than just a sport. It is a test of physical and mental fortitude, a platform for social change, and a barometer of technological advancements. Also, it is described by many as an American game because of the fun and competitive element in it. Also, this is one of the games which is played indoors and still caters to billions of fans around the world. This game was Dr. James Naismith from Canada. Initially, he invented the game by using a rectangular pitch which was 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Additionally, the court includes a free throw line which is 12 feet long. In basketball essay, students will get to know about the different components that make the game of basketball special.

Basketball Essay

It is a team game that has gained immense popularity. Also, the game is played with the help of a ball and the ball is shot into the basket that is positioned horizontally. So, the objective in the game is to shoot the ball and score the maximum points. This game is played by 2 teams that constitute a total of 5 players each. Also, the game is played on a marked rectangular floor that has a basket on both the ends.

Originally, basketball was played using a soccer ball. Also, it was James Naismith that used a peach basket which ha ad a nonhollow bottom. So, this basket was nailed at a height of 10 ft. above the ground and on an elevated track. If you consider the manual removal of the ball from the basket a drawback then the bottom was removed to and it took the shape of modern-day baskets. Also, dribbling was not part of the game initially. Eventually, it evolved till 1950 by which the balls got better shape due to manufacturing.

Additionally, the orange ball was evolved from the brown ball. The brown ball was used in the beginning as it was thought that the ball is more visible. By 1996, the peach baskets used were replaced by metal hoops on the backboard.

Basketball Game

At the start of the game, a referee tosses the ball at the center of the court between two players. One player from either team try to get their hands on the ball and the ball is passed on to the teammates. For scoring a point, a team needs to shoot the ball through the basket. If a shot is scored from a distance that is closer to the basket than the 3 point line than it fetches 2 points. Also, if the ball is shot from the distance behind 3 point line, it fetches 3 points. So, the team that has a maximum number of points is declared the winner.

In case of a draw, there may be additional time allotted to both the teams. In the game, a player is cannot move if he is holding the ball. The player needs to dribble, otherwise, it is considered as a foul. Likewise, when there is a physical contact that affects the other team then it counted as a physical foul.

Basketball is game played with a maintained and carefully marked court. It is a team sport that is commonly found in many different areas.

60 Best Basketball Topics From Sports Experts

basketball topics

To some students, basketball is an apple of the eye to them. Since it is one of the sports offered at the high school, college, or university level, it is easy to develop interest at a young age. However, the problem might arise when your lecture assigns you a basketball research paper.

You might be the team’s pro but an amateur when it comes to crafting a succinct basketball research topic. If this is you, then this article is specifically meant for you. We have a list of professional basketball research paper topics to help you write a top-tier paper.

What To Consider When Writing Basketball Topics

The first thing you will need to understand is that basketball is a fun sport. Therefore, the topic should also be in line with the genre. It is not like a technical science field where the topics look like that serious math tutor.

Topics for a basketball paper should:

Be short and straight to the point Be fun and exciting from the very onset Display the specific aspect you wish to cover Give your reader a chance to feel the thrill of the game

Because basketball is a competition, objectivity should always remain supreme. Do not write a topic that will sideline one team over the other. Ensure that you are not carried by emotions, especially when writing on your team, which lost a particular match.

Let’s now draw our focus to some of the latest basketball topics that can guarantee you tip-top grades:

  • Enhances Searchability: If your essay is published online or in a database, a relevant title helps readers find your work when searching for related topics.

How to write compelling essay titles

  • Before trying to come up with a title, make sure you fully understand the core message or argument of your essay.
  • Consider your thesis statement or main argument; it can often be a source of inspiration for your title.
  • The title should provide a hint or summary of the essay’s content. Misleading titles can confuse or frustrate readers.
  • Avoid long-winded titles. Aim for brevity while ensuring that the title still conveys the essence of the essay.
  • Using strong verbs can make your title more dynamic. For example, instead of “The Effects of Pollution on Marine Life,” consider “How Pollution Devastates Marine Life.”
  • Alliteration can make titles more catchy and memorable. For example, “Fame, Fortune, and Fallacies: The Myth of Celebrity Success.”
  • Posing a question can engage the reader’s curiosity. For example, “Is Artificial Intelligence a Threat to Humanity?”
  • Overused phrases can make your essay seem unoriginal. Always strive for a fresh and unique title.
  • Including pertinent keywords can make your essay more discoverable, especially if it’s being published online.
  • Play with Dual Meaning or Puns (when appropriate): This can make your title more interesting, but it should be used judiciously and not forced.
  • Consider Your Audience: Ensure the tone and style of your title align with the expectations of your audience. An academic paper will have a different title style compared to a casual blog post.
  • Draft Multiple Titles: Don’t settle on the first title that comes to mind. Write down several options, mull over them, or even get feedback from peers.
  • Finalize After Writing the Essay: Often, the process of writing the essay will offer clarity or a fresh perspective, making it easier to craft a fitting title.
  • Avoid Sensationalism: While it’s important to capture attention, don’t exaggerate or sensationalize just for the sake of drawing readers in. The title should remain true to the content of the essay.

Final Thoughts

An essay’s title can make or break its reception. While the body of your essay provides depth and detail, the title serves as the inviting entryway. With the Title Generator for Essay, you’re not only saving time but also ensuring that your essays get the attention they deserve right from the start. So, the next time you find yourself stumped for a title, let our generator do the heavy lifting!

28 Clever Headlines to Use in Your Winter Sports Spread

good titles for essays about basketball

It doesn’t matter if you’re incorporating your theme into your yearbook’s sports headlines, playing it straight, or going for gut-busting laughter: A clever turn of phrase will elevate your story and capture a reader’s attention .

We’re going to share 28 ideas with you for some winter sports: basketball, wrestling, swimming, and soccer (whether these are winter sports in your area, of course, depends on which part of the country you’re in). Before we do, though, a quick word about clever headlines: They don’t need to be funny.

Sure, a clever headline can surely feature a pun or an amusing turn of phrase, but it can also be a headline that expertly includes a unifying feature across the entire section or a word relates to your yearbook’s larger theme.

In this case, though, we’ve focused on finding ways to incorporate the wide glossary of sports terms into our headlines. Here are some of our favorites for basketball, wrestling, swimming, and soccer.

It might take a second to get it, but Canadian newspaper The Province aptly titled a story on whether British Columbia could handle a second NBA franchise with just four letters. The headline played off the country’s famous utterance “Eh,” which, of course, has the same sound as the letter “A.” Though this example is a little dated (the Grizzlies moved from Vancouver, British Columbia to Memphis in 2001), it’s a great example of taking a term or cultural tic specific to your school and applying the unique sound of it to a headline. .

Here are some other examples to get you started:

  • “Order on the Court”
  • “Hoops, They Did It Again”
  • “Actions Speak Louder Than Coaches”
  • “Uptown Dunk”
  • “Hoop Dreams”
  • “Dunk And Go Nuts”

When Germany defeated Brazil 7-1 in the 2014 World Cup, Britain’s Metro newspaper responded with this clever header, which puts a spin on the popular German phrase “das boot.” The play here is the boot/booted parallel. In soccer, especially Europe, cleats are known as “boots” while “booted” is a nice, strong verb alternative to “eliminated.”

This headline, like the one above, plays off cultural vocabulary, but this is a better example of playing off the double meaning of a word:

  • “Get Your Kicks”
  • “Our Goal? Stopping Yours”
  • “Let The Feet Do The Talking”
  • “Best in the Field”
  • “Here’s the Kicker”
  • “Viva Futbol!”
  • “Headers & Footers”

This yearbook page shows several headlines that work well for a wrestling spread. A number of bold headlines make a statement while still bringing the main headline “Pin and Win: Every Move Matters” to the reader’s immediate focus.  The other titles maximize rhymes and take advantage of sports lingo: “Hustle and Tustle” and “Pin and Win” both rhyme and make references to wrestling jargon.

Here are some other fun slogans you can use for your school’s wrestling spread:

  • “No Pain. No Gain”
  • “Ready to Rumble”
  • “Rock Solid”
  • “Pin It to Win It”
  • “Out on Top”
  • “Toughest Six Minutes There Is”
  • “Grapple Up”

In this yearbook layout, “Staying Afloat Through Changing Times” is an engaging headline that both cleverly references swimming and makes the reader curious to know what changes have happened. The “Press Play” headline complements the film roll aesthetic of the photos next to it.

For more swimming spread-related slogans, check out some of our headline ideas:

  • “Instant Athlete: Just Add Water”
  • “[Your Team Name] Made Waves”
  • “Sink Or Swim”
  • “Life In The Fast Lane”
  • “[Your Team Name] Made A Splash”
  • “Dive Deeper”
  • “Testing The Waters”

If you want to get your readers paying more attention to your main story, dig into your theme, your school’s culture, and sports terms to find ways to add a dose of clever to your winter sports spreads. It’ll help you steal a smile from your reader or unify your theme across multiple pages. In short, it’s worth the creative effort.

UConn's second straight national title comes in dominant style, cementing the Huskies as a modern dynasty

And just as impressive: the 2023-24 uconn huskies proved themselves as one of the best teams in modern history.

NCAA Basketball: Final Four National Championship

GLENDALE, Ariz. — There is Connecticut .

Then there is a massive gap.

And then there is everyone else.

The Huskies have no peers. We saw it for weeks; it only needed to be made official on Monday night when they scheduled a 40-minute basketball game for the final victim, Purdue , to join the rest who have been hounded into obliteration by the Huskies. The best team in college basketball — and the best program in college basketball — won the national championship (75-60) for the second year in a row in its signature bulldozing fashion.

"What could you say? We won. By a lot again," an unvarnished Dan Hurley said.

Winning by a lot is all UConn knows how to do in the Big Dance. Hurley and the best staff in college basketball trained their Huskies to smell blood and vanquish every team, every time, in every postseason game. In doing so, this 2023-24 UConn group solidified its reputation and everlasting legacy as one of the best teams college basketball has seen in the past four decades. At least.

"We wanted to give everything so we could win absolutely everything," Hurley said.

So much for the second best team in the sport giving the best team in the sport 40 minutes, or even 30 minutes, of competitive action. Purdue was just like the other five casualties on the wrong end of UConn in this NCAA Tournament — and the other six teams in LAST year's NCAA Tournament.

Utter carnage.

Connecticut is the eighth school to win back-to-back titles, joining Oklahoma State (1945-46), Kentucky (1948-49), San Francisco (1955-56), Cincinnati (1961-62), UCLA (1964-65, 1967-73), Duke (1991-92) and Florida (2006-07).

The basketball world pleaded to see UConn get itself caught up in a close game, but the Huskies outright refused — for the 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament matchup — to provide any drama. This outrageous cast trailed in the 2024 tournament for a total of 6 minutes and 22 seconds — and never trailed in the second half. It's a sixth championship for UConn, all of them coming since 1999, now tying the program for third-most in history right alongside fellow blue blood North Carolina . (UCLA has 11, Kentucky has eight.)

How absurd these Huskies are, even more ridiculous than their predecessors, who were also their own kind of absurd in how they strutted to a 2023 championship behind a record-breaking run of six wins by 13 or more points.  This team joined that team in the record books — but also one-upped their canine counterparts by putting on a three-week show (2024 UConn beat opponents by 23.3 points; last year's Huskies crew had to skate by with a 20.0 winning margin) that firmed up one of the most impressive title sweeps this sport has seen.

"I think it's up there in terms of the greatest two-year runs that a program maybe has ever had," Hurley said.

Thirty-seven wins to just three losses. Only 2011-22 Kentucky has won more games (38) as a national champion.

Here's where we ascend to all-time territory: Connecticut's point differential of +140 over six games is the most in the history of the tournament, besting the legendary 1995-96 Kentucky team that outclassed the sport that year the way UConn outpaced its sport in 2024. The 74,423 souls inside State Farm Stadium bore witness to uncommon greatness. UConn became the fourth No. 1 overall seed to win a national title (the No. 1 overall seed began 20 years ago), the first since Louisville in 2013.

A 12th straight NCAA Tournament victory by double digits/13-plus points. It's a record likely to never be broken. An all-time team, one I'd comfortably put among the 10 best since John Wooden retired in 1975. Do not take this dominance for granted. Do not normalize what hadn't ever been achieved heretofore.

What the Huskies did this year isn't supposed to happen.

The only other team to win consecutive title games by 15-plus points was UCLA from 1967-69. Those wins featured Lew Alcindor, who is considered the greatest college player ever. Speaking of legends, Hurley puts his name alongside names like Wooden and Iba and Rupp and Krzyzewski as back-to-back champions. They are all Hall-of-Famers. One day, Hurley will join them. This win assures it will happen.

NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament - National Championship - Purdue v Connecticut

Last year was about UConn cementing its case as a blue blood. It was so convincing, you never heard it brought up this season or this tournament. It was accepted as fact. Because it is.

This title elevates the program's legacy to one of a mini-dynasty. There will never be another UCLA under Wooden; those days are tucked in amber for eternity.

"I just think it's the best two-year run I think in a very, very long time just because of everything we lost from last year's team," Hurley said. "To lose that much and, again, to do what we did again, it's got to be as impressive a two-year run as a program's had since prior to whoever did it before Duke. To me it is more impressive than what Florida and Duke did because they brought back their entire teams. We lost some major players."

A dynasty in modern college basketball starts — and likely ends — with two in a row.

It's hard enough to win two in a row. Consider that we're in the transfer portal era for good, with roster retention never going back to what it was for decades. What coach is going to be able to do this? And to do it by blowing out every team? We probably won't ever see something like this again. The Huskies have done more than just accomplish the rare feat of going back-to-back. It will only get harder to win national titles moving forward.

It will be near-impossible to win two straight. Nobody's matching UConn's two-year terror run through the tournament, at least probably not for decades. It took 17 years to get another back-to-back champion. Before Florida did it in '07, it was a 15-year gap from Duke. Prior to that, the span between UCLA in 1973 until Duke was 19 years.

Then again ...

"We're going to be focusing on trying to put together a three-year run, not just a two-year run," Hurley said.

Of course he did.

To think that Hurley and company achieved this after losing five of its top eight scorers. It's insane. Truly insane. You're not supposed to be able to do this. UConn built back stronger, better, more menacing and with a lethal tendency to rip off runs that buried teams.

Purdue was its latest, and last, victim. The Boilermakers attempted just seven 3s, a stunner of stunners for a team that entered the night as the No. 2 3-point offense in college basketball. Purdue's seven attempts from 3 are the fewest in a title game since UCLA in 1995. Purdue had taken eight-plus 3-pointers in 330 straight games, dating back to 2015.

A masterful scout by Huskies assistant Luke Murray bottled up Purdue's guards and reduced them to a one-man team.

It made an all-time performance by a two-time national player of the year fall well short of having any faint hope of winning. Zach Edey , one of the best players in college basketball in the past 40 years, also managed to put up arguably the best game (37 points, 10 rebounds) in a losing title game effort ever. He joins Bill Walton and Alcindor as the only players to ever have 30-and-10 in a title game.

But it didn't matter. UConn simply ran away.

"It took him 25 shots to get 37 points. That was the game plan, just limit the guards," Final Four Most Outstanding Player Tristen Newton said.

Newton now carries the rare distinction of leading a team in scoring in two national title games, one of just seven players to ever do it. Don't say UConn doesn't have a star. Newton was a First Team All-American and solidified a singular legacy at a program that is upping its historic credentials by the season, by the tournament, by the game.

This team — the best team in UConn history, let's make that clear — will age wonderfully. They are a benchmark for all great teams to follow. When the games mattered most, they were never truly threatened. They turned blowouts into a thing of beauty.

The wins might have been boring, but the beatdowns were legendary in totality. Methodical. Relentless.

"I mean, shit, we're going to try to replicate it again," Hurley said. "We're going to maintain a championship culture. We're bringing in some very talented high school freshmen. Our returning players, through player development, will take a big jump. We'll strategically add through the portal. I don't think that we're going anywhere."

And now, in taking scope of history, it's fair to call 2023-24 UConn a juggernaut among giants that came before: 2017-18 Villanova, 2011-12 Kentucky, 2000-01 Duke, 1995-96 Kentucky, 1991-92 Duke. Keep going back. It had the experience, size, future NBA players and Hall of Fame coach. A special team we'll grow to appreciate more the further we get away from this night.

Their legacy will live forever. The feeling on the floor after the made-for-TV celebrations had finished was one of inevitability. Joyousness, but not disbelief. Monday night's final felt fated for weeks, if not months. This is UConn's sport, and Dan Hurley is on command from atop the mountain.

After Hurley cut the last twine of the net, pulled it off the rim, draped it around his neck and made his way from one end of the court to the other, he spoke as he walked through his emotions.

"Just trying to process through it all," Hurley told me.

Then his mind immediately went to what was next. As in: next season.

"Where's the East Regional next year?" Hurley asked a UConn staffer.

"Providence first."

"Then what?"

"Ah, Jersey!" Hurley said.

Barely 30 minutes removed from winning the 2024 title, he already was mapping out the next one. Hurley's brain doesn't rest. The quest doesn't quit. After a beat, as he walked down the court, he couldn't help but ask one more question.

"Where's the Final Four?"

I know it’s educated guessing, but so be it! Coaching changes still loom along with NBA decisions, and of course, the transfer portal. All are due to shake up teams across the country. Nevertheless, here is my way-too-early Power 36 for the 2024-25 season following UConn's second-straight and sixth national championship win.

🏆 UCONN WINS 2024 TITLE:  How it happened

  • Houston: J'Wan Roberts and L.J. Cryer are both expected to return and keep Houston near the top of the Big 12 and the nation's best.
  • Duke: Despite a few losses, the Blue Devils have the nation's No. 1 recruit in Cooper Flagg.
  • UConn: The back-to-back defending champs look to make it three in a row.
  • Alabama: Nate Oates is poised to continue the momentum for the Crimson Tide after leading Alabama to its first Final Four.
  • Creighton: The Big East is loaded but Creighton always seems to find a way near the top under Greg McDermott.
  • North Carolina: Replacing the production of Armando Bacot and Cromac Ryan will be key, but Hubert Davis added five players from the portal last year and will likely be active again.
  • Iowa State: T.J. Otzelberger led the Cyclones to a second-place finish in the Big 12 in 2023-24 and has taken Iowa State to the Sweet 16 in two of his first three seasons as head coach. The Clones are in good hands.
  • Gonzaga: The Zags return most of their roster including their leading scorer in Graham Ike.
  • Kansas: Bill Self admitted to looking ahead to the 2024-25 season following KU's exit in the Round of 32. Look for Self to be active in the portal and the Jayhawks to have a bounce-back season.
  • Clemson: Ian Schieffelin is expected to return this fall and the Tigers look to build on the success from the 2023-24 season
  • Tennessee: The Volunteers finished fifth in both the final AP poll and coaches poll of the season. Expect them to be near the top of the SEC again next season.
  • Arizona: Under Tommy Lloyd, the Wildcats have finished in the top 15 in offensive efficiency in each of Lloyd's first three seasons at the helm.
  • Purdue: The national runner-ups lose the national player of the year in Zach Edey, but do return key players in their backcourt such as Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith who made up one of the most dynamic backcourts in the country.
  • Auburn: Perhaps the biggest question mark for the Tigers is whether Johni Broome will declare for the NBA draft. If he returns to Auburn, look out.
  • Illinois: The 2024 Big Ten tournament champs are in good hands under Brad Underwood who has rebuilt the program.
  • Baylor: The Bears have a good incoming freshmen class headlined by five-star VJ Edgecombe.
  • Florida: The biggest question mark is Walter Clayton Jr. who is testing NBA waters.
  • Texas A&M: Aggies return Wade Taylor who was named to the Naismith Player of the Year midseason team.
  • Dayton: The Flyers ranked 25th in the final AP poll of the 2024 season and starters Javon Bennett, Enoch Cheeks and Nate Santos all expected to return.
  • Boise State: A record six teams from the Mountain West got into the 2024 NCAA tournament including Boise State. Leon Rice has guided the Broncos to 10, 20-win seasons and has the program in good shape to build off of a strong 2023-24 season.
  • Wisconsin: A.J. Storr entered the portal and Wisconsin will have to replace the production from the guard, but incoming freshman Daniel Freitag might see significant time and help returning Chucky Hepburn in another solid Greg Gard-led backcourt.
  • Xavier: The Musketeers had six freshmen who logged over 30% of the minutes played this season. That will pay dividends next season.
  • Ohio State : A new era for Ohio State (sort of) with former assistant Jake Diebler having his interim tag removed following the season.
  • Marquette: The Golden Eagles are expected to lose Tyler Kolek, but with Kam Jones and David Joplin back, Marquette will still be a very good team.
  • Michigan State: Tom Izzo always seems to find a way into the tournament.
  • Oregon: Will be interesting to see who makes it out of a tough Big Ten with realignment taking its shape in the fall, but Oregon has something to build on after winning the Pac-12 tournament in its final year.
  • Seton Hall: The 2024 NIT champs return three starters under Shaheen Holloway who went 25-12 in his first year with a solid conference record of 13-7.
  • San Diego State: Brian Dutcher lost five key players following their run to the 2023 title game but that didn't stop them from putting together a solid 2023-2024 campaign. Look for them to do the same next season.
  • UCLA: Mick Cronin labeled 2023-24 as a "rebuilding year" for the Bruins but the foundation has been set once again and Cronin returns star sophomore Dylan Andrews and will likely be active in the portal.
  • Texas: The Longhorns bring in a good freshman class that ranked in the nation's top 75.
  • Saint Mary’s:  Star guards Augustas Marčiulionis and Aidan Mahaney should be back next season.
  • Nebraska: F red Hoiberg brought the Huskers back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014 and returned two key starters Juwan Gary and Brice Williams.
  • Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons went 11-9 in what was a loaded ACC, and were an incredible 17-2 at home. I expect them to have a good offseason and be able to compete once again.
  • NC State: Kevin Keatts has a lot of work to do replacing DJ Horne and DJ Burns, but the Wolfpack should be able to continue to build off of 2023-24's tremendous tournament run to the Final Four.
  • BYU: Looking to build off a successful first season in the Big 12 with the Cougars finishing 23-11 and earning a trip to the tournament.
  • Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights have two of the top five players in the freshmen class in Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper.

With Purdue's loss, Michigan State remains last Big Ten team to win title: How it happened

good titles for essays about basketball

The Big Ten has been one of the premier basketball conferences in the country year in and year out for the last two decades, but no Big Ten team has reached the summit of March Madness since Michigan State's triumph in 2000.

Tom Izzo and the Spartans remain the last Big Ten team to win a men's basketball national championship after Purdue fell to Connecticut in Monday's national championship game , with the Boilermakers coming up one game short of the ultimate redemption season.

Purdue was the latest Big Ten team to reach the championship and ultimately fail, extending the conference's drought for at least another season. Seven Big Ten teams, including MSU, have reached the national championship game since 2000, but all have fallen short of taking home the trophy.

MSU BASKETBALL: Tasks for Tom Izzo and the Spartans this offseason

After MSU's title, Indiana was the first Big Ten team to make the final in 2002, but fell to Maryland, then in the ACC, in the championship. Illinois made it three years later in 2005, but ran into a buzzsaw North Carolina team to come up one game short. Ohio State made it in 2007 with Greg Oden and Mike Conley but dropped to the last team to win consecutive titles before UConn, Florida. MSU made it to the 2009 national championship in Detroit, but another North Carolina superteam stood in the way. Outside of MSU, Michigan is the only other school to appear in two title games in the 2000s, but dropped to Louisville in 2013 and Villanova in 2018. Wisconsin was the other school to make it in 2015 but lost to a Duke team that also beat the Spartans.

As the years pass, Michigan State's 2000 team remains a part of the conversation each basketball season in the Midwest as a reference point and marker in the history books. There have been a lot of great teams in the conference since then, but no one has been quite able to replicate MSU's magic – including Izzo himself, though he may never stop trying.

With the 1999-00 Spartans still very much part of the college sports vortex, here is a quick look back at the MSU team we just can't stop talking about, including a similarity to this year's UConn team.

How MSU became the last Big Ten team to win college basketball national title

Michigan State already introduced themselves to the greater college basketball world with a Final Four run in 1999, the first in Izzo's tenure. The core of the squad remained unchanged, outside of the addition of high-flying freshman Jason Richardson and the loss of senior forward Antonio Smith, and followed up the 33-5 season in 1999 with a 32-7 finish in 2000.

The Spartans split the Big Ten regular season title with Ohio State and staked an individual claim as the best team in the conference by winning the conference tournament with wins over Purdue, Wisconsin and Illinois to cut down the first set of nets of the postseason.

Michigan State earned the No. 1 seed in the Midwest region after the stellar season. In the first round in Cleveland, Michigan State blew out 16-seed Valparaiso 65-38, led by 15 points and eight assists from Mateen Cleaves and a defensive effort that held Valpo to 15 points in the first half.

MSU played 8-seed Utah in the second round and had a scare in the first half before ultimately pulling away for a 73-61 win. Utah led for most of the first half and by three at halftime, but MSU outscored the Utes 41-26 in the second half, including a 27-7 run , to pull away. Again, Cleaves was the story for MSU, finishing with 21 points and five assists, including 13 points in the second half.

RETURN TO GLORY? HERE'S HOW: Michigan State basketball: 5 tasks for Tom Izzo and the Spartans this offseason

MSU returned to Michigan for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight at the Palace of Auburn Hills. MSU faced 4-seed Syracuse in the Sweet 16, and had another tense game until a late rally in the final moments. MSU trailed by 10 points at halftime and the deficit was as big as 14 points, but outscored Syracuse 51-24 in the second half to advance with a 75-58 victory. MSU battled back and tied the game at 56 and eventually closed on a 17-0 run in the final six minutes after it was tied at 58 — a run so good a Syracuse player called MSU one of the best teams in a long time after losing.

MSU had two days after the thrilling win to prepare for another hard-fought battle with 2-seed Iowa State with a trip to the Final Four on the line. MSU put together the third straight late-game run, this time a 23-5 run in the final 5:49 of the game, to take down Iowa State 75-64. MSU held a three-point lead at halftime before falling behind by seven points with six minutes left to set up the late rally , punctuated by a Cleaves-to-Morris Peterson alley-oop to put MSU up by three late. Peterson and A.J. Granger led MSU with 18 points and Andre Hutson had a 17-point and 11-rebound double-double to secure the second straight Final Four trip.

MSU faced another Big Ten team, 8-seed Wisconsin, in the Final Four in Indianapolis. The Spartans secured the fourth win of the season over the Badgers in a 53-41 win that encapsulated the tough-nosed battles between the two schools in the early 2000s. MSU led just 19-17 at halftime, but used a 13-2 run to open the second half to build enough distance in the low-scoring affair for the school's first national championship appearance since 1979. Peterson was MSU's leading scorer with 20 points.

The win set up a date with 5-seed Florida in the national championship after the Gators beat North Carolina in the other semifinal game. MSU jumped out to an 11-point lead at halftime and kept Florida's comeback at bay in the second half to win 89-76 to secure the school's second, and most recent, national championship.

DREW SHARP FLASHBACK: Mateen Cleaves put the 'stone' in Flint to carry Michigan State to title

Cleaves played through a sprained ankle in the second half to lead MSU down the stretch and finished with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Peterson finished with a team-high 21 points and Granger chipped in 19 points and nine rebounds. Cleaves finished as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and memorably broke into joyous tears during the celebration after finishing his final game at MSU atop the college basketball mountain.

Michigan State's 2000 run was one of the most dominant in the history of the sport, similar to UConn's title runs the last two seasons. MSU is one of seven teams since the NCAA tournament expanded in 1985 to win all six tournament games by double digits, along with 2023 and 2024 UConn, 2018 Villanova, 2009 and 2016 North Carolina and 2001 Duke .

That's the blueprint of the most recent Big Ten national championship. It will remain the most recent example until another team from the conference, potentially MSU, can navigate the trials of March again.

Kentucky’s pantheon of Hall of Famers an enticing invitation for new head coach

Kentucky basketball’s replacement for head coach John Calipari will have a difficult act to follow.

Yes, Calipari’s program suffered a dip in production in the past few years, but he still boasts a Hall of Fame résumé with a national championship and four Final Fours during his Kentucky tenure. If nothing else, Calipari has raised recruiting expectations to a point that the next UK coach will face more pressure to assemble top talent every season.

The good news for Big Blue Nation is history suggests the program is bigger than any one coach. Five of the last seven coaches have won a national championship at UK.

Here is a look at the legacy UK’s next coach will try to match.

Adolph Rupp (1930-1972)

Rupp is actually the 16th coach in Kentucky basketball history, but for most intents and purposes the program began when he was hired in 1930. Rupp retired as the winningest coach in college basketball history with an 876-190 record. He won four national championships, and UK’s current arena bears his name. While Rupp is still considered the best coach in program history, it is worth noting the advent of integration in college basketball coincided with a downturn in results at the end of his tenure. Rupp did not play for another national championship after losing to Texas Western and its all-Black starting lineup in 1966. Rupp finally signed the program’s first Black player in 1969, but the program did not become fully integrated until after he retired.

Joe B. Hall (1972-1985)

Rupp’s top assistant before he retired, Hall took over the program after Rupp was forced to retire in 1972 due to the university’s mandatory retirement age rule. Hall gets credit for fully integrating the program and ending Kentucky’s 20-year national championship drought in 1978. While Hall was often criticized for not living up to Rupp’s lofty standard during his coaching career, he became a beloved figure around the program in his retirement. A College Basketball Hall of Famer, Hall finished his UK career with a 297-100 record.

Eddie Sutton (1985-1989)

Before Arkansas lured Calipari away from Kentucky, UK hired Sutton from Arkansas to replace Hall. The Sutton era started strong with a 32-4 record and an SEC championship in his first season, but he never led the Wildcats to the Final Four. Sutton was forced to resign amid a recruiting scandal after posting a losing record in the 1988-89 season. He resurfaced at Oklahoma State, where he reached two Final Fours. Sutton, who went 127-88 at Kentucky, was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.

Rick Pitino (1989-1997)

Pitino coached some of Big Blue Nation’s favorite teams as he led the program back from the lows of probation to a 1996 national championship. He reached three Final Fours and two national championship games at Kentucky. Pitino’s 1996 title team is still considered one of the best college basketball teams of all time and the 1992 team that lost to Duke in the Elite Eight in college basketball’s most famous game might still be the most beloved in program history. After leading UK to back-to-back title games in 1996 and 1997, Pitino left Kentucky for the NBA. His tenure with the Boston Celtics lasted just four seasons. Pitino, who was 219-50 at UK, went from Kentucky legend to the program’s biggest villain when he returned to college basketball as the head coach at arch rival University of Louisville.

Tubby Smith (1997-2007)

Coaching a team of players largely leftover from the Pitino era, Smith led Kentucky to a national championship in his first season as coach in 1998. Smith teams finished in first place four more times in the SEC and twice entered the tournament as the top overall seed, but he did not return to the Final Four after the 1998 title. That Final Four drought combined with lagging recruiting results soured fans on Smith toward the end of his UK tenure. Much like Calipari, Smith made a surprising decision to leave for a perceived lesser college job at Minnesota before the school’s administration was forced to make a decision on whether a change was needed. Smith returned to Lexington as High Point’s coach to have his jersey retired in 2021. He was 268-83 at UK.

Billy Gillispie (2007-2009)

In a reminder that change does not always necessarily bring improvement, Smith’s departure led to the worst head coaching tenure in program history. After missing on several top targets to replace Smith, UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart hired Gillispie, then the Texas A&M coach who had just upset Pitino and Louisville in the NCAA Tournament. Gillispie’s first season saw UK’s streak of winning at least one NCAA Tournament game end at 16 seasons with a first-round loss. His second season saw the Wildcats miss the tournament for the first time since coming off probation in 1992. Barnhart then fired Gillispie, who was 67-40 in two seasons, in an acknowledgment that his personality was a bad fit for the spotlight that came with the job.

John Calipari (2009-2024)

When Barnhart hired Calipari to replace Gillispie, Calipari made no secret of the fact he had wanted the job in 2007, but Kentucky never offered it. Calipari wasted no time proving he was worthy this time as he led a team built around freshmen stars John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins to the Elite Eight.

Calipari returned UK to the Final Four in 2011, won a national championship in 2012 and made another improbable run to the championship game in 2014. His 2015 team won its first 38 games before suffering a shocking loss to Wisconsin in the Final Four.

That early success came largely with freshmen-heavy teams featuring multiple one-and-done NBA draft picks per season, but as the importance of experience in college basketball increased, Calipari’s results at Kentucky suffered. The pandemic-altered 2020-21 season ended in a disastrous 9-16 record. He won just one more NCAA Tournament game after signing a 2019 contract extension with losses to No. 15 seed Saint Peter’s and No. 14 seed Oakland included in that stretch.

Despite the recent struggles, Calipari leaves UK ranked second on the program’s all-time wins list with a 410-123 record.

Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder looks to lead Caitlin Clark, Hawkeyes to 1st NCAA title

VIDEO: University of Iowa women’s basketball coach talks win over LSU

For the second straight season, head coach Lisa Bluder has led the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

Bluder spoke to "Good Morning America" following her team's 94-87 win over LSU in the Elite Eight -- a rematch of last year's championship game when the Hawkeyes came up short -- and shared how they will be preparing for the next round.

"We just kept talking about, this wasn't a rivalry with LSU, it wasn't a rematch of last year's game, it was a whole new team, a whole new year," Bluder said. "Our team was so locked in. They were so ready to play last night. I'm really, really happy for them."

Caitlin Clark, the NCAA's all-time leading scorer among men and woman, accounted for 71% of the scoring against LSU with 41 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds.

"She's absolutely amazing," Bluder said. "She has been consistent throughout her entire career, but when the spotlight is on, she is at her very best at that time."

Caitlin Clark says she's 'ready for the next chapter' after breaking scoring records, declaring for WNBA draft

Clark is one of the many stars on the court helping drum up massive media attention and interest from fans during this tournament and beyond, something Bluder -- who has coached the women's game for 40 years -- said she's proud to be part of.

"I could never have fathomed the amount of interest that we are getting right now in our game," she said. "When I played and when I started coaching, you know, you're begging people to come and watch your team play. And now it's so fulfilling."

"Our game has gotten so much better, quite honestly. And the media exposure that we've gotten through national networks like the Big Ten Network and such, that has helped us expose our brand to so many different people. For us, it's an exciting time to be part of women's basketball," Bluder continued.

Iowa will now set its sights on another exciting matchup, going head to head with UConn and their star, Paige Bueckers, on Friday. But Bluder isn't quite ready to look ahead at the Huskies.

"I haven't even thought about it yet," Bluder said, candidly. "I gave myself about 20 hours to enjoy this one. That's what I'm going to do. I'll star prepping this afternoon."

Dennis Rodman Forced to Apologize to Scottie Pippen In Person

  • April 15, 2024

Dennis Rodman details history with Scottie Pippen including an important apology.

The iconic Bulls dynasty saw one of the most dominant eras of entertaining basketball in league history. Dennis Rodman joined the Bulls after Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen had already won their first historic three-peat, and together, the trio would go on to repeat the same from 1996 to 1998.

However, there was no love lost between Pippen and Rodman before the latter signed for the Chicago-based franchise following his Spurs tenure. In fact, Dennis Rodman was allegedly forced to apologize to the small forward before he could put pen to paper on his Bulls contract.

The original bad blood between Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman dates back to the time when the Worm was playing for the Detroit Pistons. Pippen never really liked the Bad Boys Pistons’ overtly aggressive style of play. Nor was he a fan of Dennis Rodman’s antics.

They had recurring on-court altercations, but things went out of hand during Game 4 of the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals when Rodman shoved Pippen into the hoop stanchion, causing a horrible chin injury that would later take six stitches.

If Scottie didn’t hate Rodman enough, that incident was the last nail in the coffin. The apology letter fiasco issued by Pistons’ Matt Dobek only made things clouded, to say the least. In fact, Rodman would even later denounce writing the letter and say that he was originally forced to sign it.

But little did the two fierce rivals know that by the summer of ’95, they would find themselves fighting side by side in the red and black of Chicago.

Dennis Rodman Apologizes On Request of Phil Jackson

Per Dennis Rodman’s own account, the Worm had to apologize to Scottie Pippen in person days before finalizing his move to the Bulls. During an appearance on the Thuzio Live & Unfiltered podcast, Rodman recounted the story when Phil Jackson arranged a meetup between Rodman, Pippen, Jordan, and their families at Bulls GM Jerry Krause’s house.

“Phil came up to me and said, Dennis, you know, before we put you on the team could you do me a favor?’ I’m like, ‘What is that Phil?’ He said, ‘Could you go and tell Scottie you’re sorry? (laugher), said Rodman.

Dennis Rodman had refused to sign the open apology letter back in ‘91. This time he did not back out. The Worm went on to narrate what happened next.

“I’m like, ‘Sorry for what?’ He said, ‘You know, that series you guys had in ’91.’ I said, ‘You want me to go say sorry for that?’ He said, ‘Would you just go do it?’ I said alright. I went over to Scottie and I said, ‘Scottie, sorry about that, man, you know, pushing you out of bounds,’” Rodman said.

Scottie Pippen, being soft-spoken as ever, was quick to accept the apology. If he held any grudge against the former Pistons man, he did not express.

Scottie said, ‘Don’t worry about it, it’s OK, it’s OK, we just want to win a championship.’ He said, ‘Are you on board?’ I said, ‘Hell yeah, I’m on board.’ So that’s how I signed the contract right there, I had to apologize to Scottie. (laughter) That’s the only reason I was a Chicago Bull, I had to apologize to him, and then after that, the rest was history.”

And, so it was.

How Good was Dennis Rodman in Chicago?

Rodman played three seasons with the Chicago Bulls and won a ring for each season during his stay. That Bulls superteam was unlike any other lineup pieced together in Chicago that saw three of the league’s best stars come together to absolutely dominate the game.

Dennis Rodman brought fierce defense, rebounding prowess, and relentless energy to the Bulls. The Worm made a total of 199 appearances in the Red and Black. He averaged an impressive 15.3 rebounds, 5.2 points, and 2.8 assists per game during his Bulls career.

Dennis Rodman was the ultimate disruptor throughout his career and never was that more impactful than Game 6 of the 1992 Finals where he racked up a Finals record 11 Offensive Rebounds helping the Bulls secure the title despite MJ scoring just 22 on just 5-19 from the field. pic.twitter.com/ci3c7N0avE — NBAStatGuy (@NBAStatGuy_) September 2, 2023

His tenacity, hustle, and knack for disrupting opponents’ offenses made him the perfect fit for the Bulls playbook. Rodman’s rebounding skills were legendary—he’d crash the boards with ferocity, securing possessions for his team. On the defensive end, Rodman was a lockdown defender, capable of guarding multiple positions with his agility and strength. He’d often be tasked with shutting down the opponent’s best scorer, allowing Jordan and Pippen to focus on offense.

Offensively, Rodman wasn’t a primary scoring option, but he excelled at creating second-chance opportunities with his offensive rebounding.

Rodman won his third, fourth, and fifth ring in the three seasons with the franchise. It wouldn’t have been possible if he had not chosen to dissolve his beef with Scottie Pippen.
