How to Write the Ohio State University Essay 2021-2022

If you’re interested in The Ohio State University, there are luckily no supplemental essays that apply to all applicants. There is an additional essay for the Morrill Scholarship Program, however. This is a competitive program for students who excel academically, have strong leadership skills, and are interested in fostering diversity and inclusion within their communities. 

Each year, only 300 students are named Morrill Scholars, which provides both in-state and out-of-state students free tuition scholarships. In this post, we’ll discuss this year’s essay prompt for the program, and how you can maximize your chances of acceptance by writing a great essay.

The Ohio State University Morrill Scholarship Essay Prompt

Below is information about the Morrill Scholarship, as well as the essay prompt. Each applicant must respond to the prompt in 350-500 words. 

The Morrill Scholarship Program (MSP) is one of Ohio State’s premier scholarship opportunities offered through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI). MSP seeks academically talented student leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, service and social justice.

MSP scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to students admitted to the Columbus campus for the autumn semester following high school graduation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States.

Morrill Scholarship Program Prompt

How have your life experiences and/or endeavors prepared you to be a morrill scholar please answer fully, and when possible, provide specific examples. (350–500 words), understanding the prompt .

In a way, this prompt is asking you two distinct questions. First, the prompt is asking you to pick a life experience that you want to discuss. Next, you’ll have to discuss why this experience would make you a good candidate for a Morrill Scholarship. To help you brainstorm some ideas, below are some questions you’ll want to think about before you start writing.

  • What is one of your life experiences that has fundamentally questioned the way that you view life? 
  • Are there any social justice issues that you are particularly passionate about? Why?
  • Leadership takes many forms. How have you showed leadership in the past?
  • What type of traits do you think a Morrill Scholar has?

Once you have answers to these questions, be sure to do some research on the Morrill Scholarship and what it entails, as well as what types of students typically receive the scholarship. Try and determine why these students were good applicants, and look for any similarities or things you have in common with them.

Cliché Topics to Avoid

While you have the freedom to discuss an important life experience, there are still some topics that you’ll want to avoid. These include: 

  • Picking a topic such as sports injury, tragedy, or bad grade
  • Picking a topic that isn’t significant enough and not explaining how the experience impacted you
  • Using a privileged tone when discussing your perspective
  • Having a cliché ending, such as  “ I learned that people can be happy with so little, ” or “ I learned the importance of giving back. ”

Writing the Essay 

Once you have an understanding of what the prompt and the program is looking for, you can start writing. Although there is no one perfect way to structure this essay, it might be helpful to follow this general format:

  • Describe a memorable life experience that relates to a topic of diversity, inclusion, or social justice
  • Demonstrate how this experience made you grow or highlighted an aspect of your personality
  • Explain what you will bring to the program after going through this experience

Let’s look at each section in more detail now.

1.  Describe a memorable life experience

The admissions officers want to know what you have been through. They know about issues like racial injustice or mass incarceration—what they don’t know about is you. Starting your essay off with an anecdote that clearly expresses what you have been through is a great way to show the admissions officers reading your essay that topics like diversity and social justice are important and relevant to you.

Maybe you grew up as a minority in a community and you talk about the time you were racially profiled at the mall with your friends. Or maybe you started a program at your school for kids who normally sat at lunch to sign up and get a buddy so they always had someone to eat with. Perhaps after researching a refugee crisis for your history class, you went to the local shelter in your town and spoke to the refugees about their experiences to understand them more.

Your experience with diversity and inclusion doesn’t necessarily have to be a traditional topic of diversity like racial, religious, or socioeconomic. You could also discuss your diversity of interests: you love collecting stamps even though most of your friends think it’s old fashioned. Or maybe you want to discuss your diversity of perspective: you are really liberal among your conservative family.

The most important thing is that you choose a single experience to focus your anecdote on. So, a student who wants to write about her ethnicity shouldn’t give a general overview of how she feels discriminated against because of where her family is from. Instead, she should focus on a specific instance of discrimination that strongly affected her or gave her a chance to stand up and defend herself.

2. Demonstrate how this experience made you grow

This next part of your essay is super important to show why this experience is so impactful and has prepared you to be a Morrill Scholar.

After you have set up the anecdote, now you should give insight as to what your state of mind or emotions were in this situation. Answering questions like these could be helpful:

  • What did you feel in the moment?
  • What was your perspective before this experience? After?
  • Did a certain personality trait shine through? Were you brave, resilient, creative, determined?

However, be careful while you are writing. You want to convey the growth or traits that you expressed during or after this experience, but you don’t want to tell the admissions officers that planning a school walkout to protest the lack of diversity in the administration made you a more confident leader—they should learn that without ever being explicitly told so. By interjecting emotions or including your inner thoughts in the moment, you will be able to show your readers the impact this experience had on you.

3. Explain what you will bring to the program

The best way to conclude your essay is to bring it back to OSU and the Morrill Program. At the end of the day, there are hundreds of other students who likely have had similar experiences or takeaways as you. You need to show how what you have been through and learned will prepare you to contribute to the diverse and inclusive community on campus.

When talking about what you will bring—or what you hope to get out of—the Morrill Scholarship Program, you should mention both implicit and explicit aspects. 

Some implicit things you might contribute to the community are teaching your new friends your culture’s traditions, discussing difficult topics with peers who have different perspectives, or approaching new and intimidating situations with confidence and clarity. 

So an example of an implicit aspect of the community might be a student who talked about his experience volunteering with an immigration lawyer, where he learned how important it is for lawyers to be billingual to communicate with their clients, might write about how he wants to practice speaking Spanish with his friends. Whether they are having a debate in his Spanish class or just hanging out and eating dinner in the dining hall, he’s looking forward to surrounding himself with others who are dedicated to becoming billingual, and hopefully encouraging others to learn Spanish. 

For explicit things you hope to contribute or gain from the Morrill Scholars community you should research the opportunities afforded to you through the program. You might mention a club that aligns with your interests that you want to join, an event you started at your high school that you hope to bring to the OSU community, or a certain professor you are looking forward to working with.

An example of a student writing about an explicit aspect could be someone who had a tutor in high school that helped her feel better about herself since she struggled in her history class. Her tutor made her feel welcomed and included, and now she wants to give back to other students by becoming a Supplemental Instruction leader through the Morrill Scholarship Program. She feels she has learned a lot about what it takes to be an effective and encouraging tutor, and now she wants to give back to her future OSU students.

The best essays will combine implicit and explicit things you want to contribute or get out of the program, but as long as you can make the admissions officers feel like you belong in this program and on OSU’s campus, you will have done your job.

Admission to Major

Future engineers.

New freshmen and transfer students should visit Engineering for Everyone for information regarding admission to major for future engineering students.

Current Engineers

Students that have started classes at Ohio State and are enrolled in an engineering/computer science major or pre-major can seek admission to an engineering major. Students not enrolled in an engineering/computer science major or pre-major should review Enroll in an Engineering Program .

Due to available capacity, many programs can accept students into the major without applying while others require students to apply through the admission application process. Below shows the current method to seek admission into each major. Please note these statuses may change as enrollment in majors change.

Regional Campus Engineers

Students wanting to major in a "space available" major will be switched into the major when they campus change to Columbus. Students wanting to major in a program indicated as "limited space" should submit an application to major as soon as they are eligible to apply.

Space Available Programs

These majors are accepting engineering students on the Columbus campus in good standing (2.0 GPA or above) into the major without the need to submit an admission application. To switch into a space available major, please visit the advisor in that major.

Limited Space Programs

Only available to students in the pre-major.

These majors accept students into the major through the admission to major application process. Students will need to submit an application to major to seek admission to the following programs. In order to implement a transparent and equitable admission process and recognizing the challenges in meeting the demand and space availability in popular majors, only students in these pre-majors may apply to their respective major. For example, only biomedical pre-major are permitted to apply to the biomedical engineering major.

Prospective Ohio State students (freshmen, transfers, and regional campus) interested in one of these majors will need to apply to the major during the undergraduate admissions process.

The Application Process

Students can select and apply to as many as three majors of interest  (ranked in order of preference), during the semester that eligibility courses are completed, which generally occurs during the second semester of enrollment.

  • Students enrolled in a pre-major program are required to apply to three major choices.
  • Students enrolled in a major program and are wishing to change majors may select one, two, or three majors choices.

Students selecting the CIS option in Computer Science as their first choice are not required to select a choice 2 or 3 engineering major but are welcome to do so.

Students selecting Computer Science (CSE and CIS BS options),  Electrical and Computer Engineering ,  Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering , and  Industrial and Systems Engineering will be asked to select the specialization/program of study in the major they plan to pursue. Please use the links on each major to explore each program's options. This selection is not permanent, students are able to change their choices in the future.

The process requires students to verify their coursework, and respond to a few short essay prompts (about 250 words each). Students will address their interest in the selected majors, their experiences working with teams, and their life experiences influencing their desire to pursue engineering. Once final grades are available at the end of the semester, applications will undergo a program review. Applicants undergo a blind review by the selected major choices where the cumulative GPA and essay responses are considered (the CSE 2221 grade and Physics II grades are also considered for computer science and engineering physics applicants respectively). Applications will be reviewed in the order of the their preferred major choices. For example, if a student's preference is Civil, Chemical, Environmental, their application will be review by Civil first, followed by Chemical and Environmental if not admitted by the proceeding major.

All students will be notified of their admission decision on the admission decision date listed below. Admitted students will be offered a place in one major. This offer must be accepted by the indicated deadline to secure a place. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of the admission offer.

Students must have a cumulative Ohio State GPA of 2.0 or better, be enrolled in an engineering/computer science major or pre-major, and meet the criteria for each major choice by the end of the semester in which they are applying.

Major Choice 1 Options

  • Aerospace Engineering - Calculus II; Fundamentals of Engineering; Physics I; and enrollment in the aerospace or mechanical pre-major
  • Biomedical Engineering - Calculus II; Fundamentals of Engineering; either Chemistry II or both Chemistry I and Physics I; and enrollment in the biomedical pre-major
  • *CIS pre-majors applying to the CSE option will not be required to meet the Fundamentals of Engineering criteria. However, if admitted to CSE, students are expect to complete ENGR 1181/1182 during their first year in the major.
  • CIS BA option - GE Foundations: Writing and Information Literacy
  • CIS BS option - GE Foundations: Writing and Information Literacy

  • Students selecting the CIS option in Computer science are not required to have credit for Calculus II and Fundamentals of Engineering to be eligible for choice 2 and choice 3 engineering majors. Applicants will still need to meet the science/technical course requirement for their choice 2 and 3 options.
  • Students not admitted to Computer Science and who accept an admission offer to their choice 2 or 3 engineering major will be required to complete the engineering common requirements (Calculus II and ENGR 1181/1182) during their first year in the major.
  • Engineering majors are assessed a program fee each semester. CIS pre-majors should be aware their cost of attendance may increase by switching from the CIS pre-major to an engineering major by accepting a choice 2 or 3 offer.

  • Students must be enrolled in an engineering or computer science pre-major to apply for admission to major . Students not enrolled in an engineering or computer science pre-major/major will first need to change into one before going through the admission to major process. Students should follow the Enroll in an Engineering Program .
  • Students have two attempts to seek admission to a major through the Admission to Major process . Applications reviewed at the end of term will be considered an attempt. Students not awarded admission to a major after the second attempt, and students who do not wish to accept an offer during their second attempt will not be permitted to apply a third time. Applications with a status of "Withdrawn" or "Cancelled..." do not count as an attempt.
  • Application Cancellation . Students may cancel their application by the 10 th week of the semester. Applications cancelled by the deadline listed below will not count as an application attempt. Applications not cancelled by the deadline will be assessed for admission eligibility at the end of the semester and therefore deemed an attempt.
  • Students who accept an admission to a major offer are not permitted to reapply to a different major during the next admission cycle . Accepting an offer demonstrates the intent to complete the major program. Students who wish to reapply to a new major will need to wait one academic year to reapply. For example, if a student submits an application in Spring 2024 for Autumn 2024 admission and accepts the offer, the student would not be permitted to reapply during the Autumn 2024 cycle.

Prospective students interested in pursuing two degrees at Ohio State, with one in specific engineering programs (Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer and Information Science, or Mechanical Engineering), must choose one of these programs during their initial application to Ohio State. Once enrolled at Ohio State, students can later add a second major or degree, either within engineering or from another university program. It's important to note that adding a double major or dual degree in these specified programs later on is not allowed.

For current Ohio State Engineering students, adding a double major or dual degree in the mentioned programs is not permitted. However, they are encouraged to connect with their academic advisor to explore alternative academic opportunities aligned with their specific interests and career goals.

Students wishing to pursue a second major or degree in any of the other 10 available engineering programs may do so by following the procedures outlined in the Current Engineering Students or Current Students Outside of Engineering sections below.

While students are allowed to pursue dual degrees in two engineering or computer science majors, it's important to note that they may only choose one from the list of Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer and Information Science, or Mechanical Engineering. Pursuing two programs from this list simultaneously is not permitted. The college does not generally recommend completing two engineering degrees (except for Aviation and Computer Science). The job market tends to favor individuals with a bachelor's degree in a single engineering discipline. Instead, students with diverse interests are encouraged to explore technical areas through a minor or certificate program, avoiding the additional time commitment needed for two degrees. Additionally, considering graduate degrees (MS or PhD) is suggested, where changing disciplines is both possible and beneficial.

For students pursuing a dual degree in engineering or computer science, the process involves applying to one major at a time in two separate admission cycles (e.g., spring cycle for major 1 and autumn cycle for major 2). The first application should be for the first major/degree during the initial admission attempt. After successfully gaining admission to the first major, the second application is submitted for the second major.

When applying for the second major/degree, students should indicate on the application that they are seeking a dual degree. This ensures they are not switched out of their current major upon admission to the second major.

Note : Students interested in adding a dual degree in one of the Space Available Programs only need to visit the advisor to declare the second degree; an application is not required.

Welcome to the application for the Stamps Eminence Scholarship Program.

To be considered for the scholarship award and a place in the program, you must complete and submit the Stamps Eminence Scholarship Application by Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST. To access the application, you need your OSU username (lastname.#), which you receive after submitting your application to The Ohio State University. You should allow approximately 5 days for receipt of your Ohio State username via email after submitting your admissions application.

Consideration for this scholarship is contingent upon admission to the Ohio State Columbus campus. Only new, first-year students entering in the Autumn 2025 semester are eligible for this scholarship. Before completing the Stamps Eminence Scholarship application, please review the checklist below, scholarship description, and program requirements.

Following the application review process, a select number of applicants will be named as finalists. All finalists will be interviewed via a virtual platform during the months of January and February. Finalists are required to participate in the Stamps Eminence Finalist Friday event, which is scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2025 . This day will provide a glimpse of the Stamps Eminence experience and will include special department visits and various group activities that precede a special finalist reception that evening. There will be no exceptions.

Students awarded the Stamps Eminence Scholarship are required to be members of the University Honors Program and active participants in the Stamps Eminence Scholarship Program. Please review information about both programs to learn more about the opportunities and expectations of students who remain in good standing in each.

Essay prompt: Imagine yourself fifteen years from now, being honored for your outstanding accomplishments and significant contributions to your community and/or your professional discipline. As part of this recognition, you have been invited to be a featured speaker at the prestigious Stamps Eminence Annual Dinner. In the audience are current undergraduate Stamps Eminence Scholars and fellow alumni. In your speech, what key topics will you address? What specific achievements or contributions are you being celebrated for? In what ways did the Stamps Eminence Program support and facilitate your journey to success?

  • Note: We recommend you use a word processing program (e.g. Microsoft Word) to respond to the essay prompt. You will need to copy and paste your essay response into the appropriate text box in the Stamps Eminence application. The essay is in Section 2 of the application. Remember to carefully proofread your work and limit your response to 500 words.

Video Introduction: Applicants will have the opportunity to introduce themselves via a 2-minute YouTube introduction. The following parameters will help you create your introduction:

  • First minute : Introduce yourself and remember, we already know what is in your application. What don't we know about you? If you are recording a video of yourself speaking, please use a simple and uncluttered background. You may also choose to narrate the video of shared pictures, slides, and objects that demonstrate your interests, personality, and what is important to you. Do not include another video in this introduction.
  • Second minute : Talk about your Stamps Eminence Essay and share your thought process on crafting your response. What do you want as your main takeaways?

Note: Your video does not need to be extensively rehearsed, polished, or edited. Be yourself! The video is just one component of your application materials. For our selection committee’s access and your privacy, please be sure to create and provide an unlisted (not private) YouTube link. If your link is not set up this way, the selection committee will not be able to view it. The video link box immediately follows the essay text box.

  4. Verify your availability for Stamps Eminence Finalist Friday, February 28, 2025. If selected as a finalist, you will be required to attend.

The key to answering this question skillfully is to choose experiences that exemplify your abilities to achieve these missions without repeating what was already stated in the personal statement and primary application. This can be difficult to achieve because likely the most important experiences you had prior to applying were listed there. Two strategies can be useful:

A. Describe a prior experience from a different angle, perhaps with an anecdote that exemplifies a particular strength or skill you gained that will help you achieve the above goals. A story is a unique way to approach the same experience from a new angle.

B. Be creative in thinking of less conventional experiences that may have helped you gain these skills. Instead of research or clinical work, consider perhaps a time when you bridged a gap or resolved a dispute between disparate parties from different backgrounds. This can help show your ability to unite and lead diverse people which will help you empower your patients and provide effective patient care. This is an example of a creative approach to this question.

2. REQUIRED ESSAY FOR THOSE APPLYING TO REGULAR M.D., M.D./PhD AND THE PRIMARY CARE TRACK: The OSU COM Admissions vision statement states that the admissions committee will assemble a class that displays “diversity in background and thought.” Why is “diversity in background and thought” a desirable characteristic for a medical school’s student body? For this answer, think about the ideals which you hold in high esteem that help a team function and allow differing groups to work together. Different viewpoints in collaboration often create a unique outcome which is stronger than it otherwise would have been in isolation. You can consider using an anecdote from an occasion on which you collaborated with someone with a differing opinion. In the end, craft an answer that fits your ideals and beliefs about this topic. A genuine answer is always strongest.

This question necessitates a prior background with primary care and an interest in the field. This should be relatively straightforward for students interested in such a track. What may make your answer unique is discussing alternative primary care experiences besides the conventional medical school clinic experience. Did you institution have a free clinic? Did you work with underserved populations providing health screening or educational services in the community? This may make your answer unique. Describe how your experiences inform your overall goals in medical school and beyond.

It is reasonable to draw on past experiences (just be sure not to repeat your answer above) but use them to convey how you will craft your career as a primary care physician. Consider the following large roles of a primary care physician that you may strive towards: excellence in patient care, patient education, preventative health, medical student and resident education, holistic approach to medical care, collaboration with mental health providers.

Applicants to the University Honors Program and the Ohio State Scholars Program indicate interest in their preferred program on their Common Application. This process is only available to new first-year applicants to The Ohio State University Columbus Campus applying for autumn admission.   

Step One:  

Indicate your interest on the Common Application for the University Honors Program or Ohio State Scholars Program. You may only select interest in one program. 

To be fully considered for Honors or Scholars, we strongly recommend that you submit a complete application (your online admission application and all required materials ) by midnight (EST) on November 1.  

Step Two:  

Only applicants who are admitted to The Ohio State University Columbus campus for the autumn term will progress to step two. 

Once admitted, you will move on to a competitive holistic review process for the University Honors Program. Applicants are reviewed using a broad set of criteria designed to consider not only past accomplishments but also future promise and potential. Accepted students typically have exceptional or impressive academic records; outstanding essays demonstrating analytical, critical, and creative thinking; quality extracurricular involvement showing genuine commitment and leadership; unique talents or abilities; and willingness to embrace diversity in both ideas and people. ​  

Step Three: 

All applicants will receive an email notification with their Honors admissions decision. If offered a place in Honors, the email will contain additional program information. 

Both the University Honors Program and Ohio State Scholars Programs are “opt-out” programs. Applicants accept their Honors or Scholars offer simply by paying their acceptance fee to the university. Once this fee is paid, no additional action is required. 

Instructions on opting-out of the program will be included in the Honors admissions email.

  • All Honors and Scholars admissions notifications will be sent via email to the preferred email on file with Undergraduate Admissions or university Buckeyemail account (if activated). 
  • Admission into the Honors Program or a Scholars Program is competitive and based on a multi-faceted review of multiple factors. Placement is not guaranteed based solely on academic record.  
  • The Honors and Scholars admissions process takes place December-April and progress is based on when applicants are admitted to the university. Please be patient as we review your application. 
  • We do not require a minimum set of criteria for our programs (i.e., minimum test scores, GPA, or class rank). 
  • If selected, you will be offered placement in ONE program.

Does Ohio State require essays?

No. Ohio State University does not require an additional OSU application essay unless you are applying to the Morrill Scholarship Program. If you choose to  apply  to the Morrill Scholarship Program, you must write a single OSU essay. This OSU application essay is 350-500 words—close to the length of the Common Application’s personal statement.

Remember, this OSU special scholarship essay is only required for Morrill Scholarship applicants. The general OSU application only requires a  Common Application  Personal Statement.

What is the Morrill Scholarship Program?

According to OSU, “The Morrill Scholarship Program (MSP) is one of Ohio State’s premier scholarship opportunities offered through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI). MSP seeks academically talented student leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, service, and social justice.” If you are interested, be sure to visit the  MSP website  to learn more about the history of the scholarship, how MSP students get involved on OSU’s campus, as well as other scholarship  opportunities  only available to MSP students and  Young Scholars Program  participants.

Who is eligible?

According to the OSU Common Application, “MSP scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to students admitted to the Columbus campus for the autumn semester following high school graduation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States.”

Unlike many scholarships which simply grant funds without additional requirements, the Morrill Scholarship Program seeks academically exceptional high school seniors who will “serve as student ambassadors and champions of scholarship and diversity” and “actively engage in diversity-based leadership, service and social justice activities” at OSU. If you have done activities like this in the past, this may be the perfect program for you!

Additionally, The Morrill Scholarship Program has three award levels. These levels are as follows:

  • Distinction, which equals the value of the cost of attendance for both Ohio residents and nonresidents.
  • Prominence, which equals the value of in-state tuition plus the nonresident surcharge for nonresidents.
  • Excellence, which equals the value of in-state tuition for Ohio residents.

All three of these Scholarships are renewable for eight semesters. Additionally, the OSU website notes that “over 80 percent of Morrill Scholarship recipients are also University Honors and Scholars students.”

Interested in learning more about these other programs? The  University Honors Program  offers honors courses to eligible students. It also gives these students the opportunity to live in Honors residential learning communities. The  Ohio State Scholars Program , on the other hand, is a residential program that organizes students into 16 specialized  communities . The students in each of the communities participate in community-specific learning experiences under the guidance of program mentors.

The most important takeaway is that participation in the University Honors Program or Ohio State Scholars Program does not disqualify you from the Morrill Scholars Program (MSP).

How competitive is the Morrill Scholarship?

While the Morrill Scholarship Program doesn’t publicly release information on the number of applicants, with a total undergraduate class size of 46,984 students at Ohio State University, Morrill Scholars comprise around three percent of the student body. That gives the MSP a lower acceptance rate than every Ivy League school!

In other words, The Morrill Scholarship Program is very competitive. Consequently, you should write a compelling response to the OSU special scholarship essay prompt to boost your admissions chances.

There are over 1,400 Morrill Scholars who “represent a wide array of cultures, backgrounds, and academic interests with a shared goal of infusing the campus with a celebration of an appreciation for diversity and inclusion.” The top tier of the program is the most competitive—OSU only selects  40 Distinction Scholars  each year.

Note: if you are considered for the Distinction Scholarship, you’ll need to interview in addition to the essay you submit in your OSU application.

While the Morrill Scholarship Program doesn’t release average standardized test scores and GPAs for their Scholars, therefore you should assume that selected students are on the higher end of each. If you think these qualifications describe you, you should definitely consider applying to the Morrill Scholarship Program as part of your OSU  application .

What do Morrill Scholars do?

Being a Morrill Scholar at Ohio State University is a prestigious honor. The Morrill Scholarship Program provides many exciting opportunities on the OSU campus. The OSU  website  details that Morrill Scholarship Program students are eligible to participate in activities such as:

  • Diversity and inclusion-themed workshops, lectures, and service projects.
  • Graduate and professional school preparation courses and guidance.
  • Mentoring and tutoring to support your academic success.
  • Morrill Scholars Early Arrival Program.
  • ODI outreach and engagement projects on campus and in the community.
  • ODI leadership and service courses for credit toward the Leadership Minor.
  • Optional housing in the MSP Learning Community in Blackburn House.
  • Service trips and travel abroad opportunities.

If you apply to the Morrill Scholarship Program this OSU essay prompt will appear in your Common Application:

You indicated interest in the Morrill Scholarship Program. To be considered for the Morrill Scholarship program, create a persuasive response to the following questions in 350-500 words. How have your life experiences and/or endeavors prepared you to be a Morrill Scholar? Please answer fully, and when possible, provide specific examples. (500 words maximum).

How do you write a Morrill Scholarship Essay?

To answer the OSU Morrill Scholarship essay, you must first pay specific attention to what qualities OSU looks for in their Morrill Scholars. Your response to this prompt should demonstrate that you would be an asset to the Morrill Scholarship Program. In other words, use this OSU application essay to prove that you fit the criteria used to evaluate OSU application essays for the Morrill Scholarship Program.

Pay attention to the language that OSU uses to describe the Morrill Scholarship Program. They specifically seek “advocates and champions” of four pillars: diversity, inclusion, social justice, and academic excellence. In your OSU special scholarship essay, you will should demonstrate how you have advocated for these values during your high school career.

Choosing a Topic

Unsure how to start? Begin with a structured  freewriting  session. Take approximately ten minutes and write on how you’ve interacted with each of the four pillars mentioned above. This OSU special scholarship essay asks you to describe specific “experiences and endeavors” that make you a strong candidate for the MSP. Therefore, you should choose an anecdote (or several) that directly reflects your experiences around diversity, inclusion, social justice, and academic excellence.

Notice that this OSU application essay prompt mentions both “life experiences” and “endeavors.” These are important terms to define. Endeavors specifically speak to actions that you’ve undertaken to accomplish a goal. In other words, if you’ve done anything to promote and work towards the goals of diversity, inclusion, social justice, and academic excellence, then these are things to write about. For example, you could write about starting an Indigenous American film club at your school or volunteering in a literacy program at your local elementary school.

Life experiences, on the other hand, are less about actions that you’ve undertaken and more about how your experiences interact with the four pillars. For instance, you can describe your experiences as a member of a marginalized community or your journey towards allyship. However, if you write about your life experiences in your OSU application essay, remember to focus on  your  experiences. In other words, you shouldn’t tell someone else’s story. Keep the focus on yourself—the things that you’ve learned, observed, and dealt with firsthand.

Drafting a Response

When drafting your OSU essay, remember that you do not have to address all four of the pillars. However, your OSU application essay should address at least two. You don’t want to write selectively about one and ignore the others; the Morrill Scholarship Program looks for students who embody all of their values.

Given the scope of this OSU application essay, you might discuss several different experiences. For example, you could discuss how you spearheaded a free breakfast program at your high school alongside your experience volunteering at your town’s food bank. You could then connect these experiences to your interest in resolving inequities in global food access. You should first describe your anecdote; then, discuss how you grew from the experience. Don’t mention a situation without detailing how it shifted your perspective. Those awarding the OSU special scholarships want to see how your experiences have changed your outlook!

This question asks for a “persuasive essay.” You should approach writing with the goal of convincing the readers that you belong in the Morrill Scholarship Program. Strong topic choices and anecdotes are important for this OSU essay, but you should also be sure to focus on the why and not just the what. How did your experiences/endeavors shape you into a strong candidate for the exclusive Morrill Scholarship? What did you learn about the importance of the four pillars of the program, and how will you implement this on OSU’s campus? Be sure to include your future plans in your OSU application essay. After all, OSU wants to know how you will contribute to the MSP!

Finally, you want to demonstrate your personality and passions to admissions officers, expanding on the rest of your Common Application to prove that you belong in the Morrill Scholarship Program.

You don’t want your OSU special scholarship essay to be either too short or too long. The following information refers only to the Placement Exam on the Columbus campus. For information about English Placement on another Ohio State campus, please contact your advisor.

The English Placement Exam asks students to respond to a prompt that requires critical reading, summary skills, and an original essay in response. Students read a short opinion piece (approximately 500-750 words) and are asked to summarize and then respond to it.

General Directions for the Placement Exam

The Placement Test asks you to read a short essay, write a one-paragraph summary of that essay, and write a response to that essay.

You have a few choices about the document type you use to write and submit your essay:

You may write your essay in Word, Pages, or Google Docs and copy and paste it into the submission text box once you have completed it and submit it there.

You may type your essay directly into the text box in the Testing area and submit it through the submission function.

Please read the essay before you begin writing. When you have finished reading the essay, respond to it in two ways.

Step 1: Write a one-paragraph summary of the essay that provides a good idea of what the essay is about. Be sure to identify the central argument in your summary and to include the title of the essay and the author’s name in the summary.

Step 2: Write an essay of your own that responds to the author's argument. In your essay, do your best to demonstrate your composition skills and familiarity with edited American English. While much academic writing requires finding and working with outside sources, this placement essay should consist exclusively of your own writing. While you may quote from the placement reading, do not include the work of other writers

You should work to display the following attributes in your writing:

A clearly defined central idea (thesis).

A clear and logical organization (clearly defined organization and logical paragraphs).

Strong supporting details drawn from experience, observation, and/or from the reading. No sources outside the reading should be included.

An understanding of the reading and argument presented in it.

Grammatically correct and effective sentences.

You may take some time to to free-write, plan, or outline your thoughts before you write the essay. If you are writing in Word, Pages, or Google Docs to copy and paste into the text box, be sure to include a header or separation between your notes and Steps 1 and 2. If you are typing directly into the submission text box instead of in a file that you will cut and paste, please indicate the location of your planning notes in the text box with a heading such as notes , brainstorming , or free - writing .

NOTE: The writing you submit should be your own . This is not only because the Student Code of Conduct requires that you do your own work, but also because it is essential for our assessment process that the writing you submit is typical of your writing. If you get help with your response, you may be placed in a class that is too difficult for you.

Please make an effort to proofread your work before you submit it. At the least, make sure that the separation between pre-writing notes and Steps 1 and 2 is clear.

We strongly recommend that you write both your summary and your response using Word, Pages, or Google Docs and then copy and paste them into the submission area. If you write in the textbox itself, you may lose your work if you have an internet interruption or your browser times out .

Once you have submitted your test, our team of readers will read the summary and response to determine which of the following English courses will be the best for you:

Level 4: either English 1110.01 or 1110.02 (3 credit hours)

Level 5: English 1110.03 (3 credit hours) and 1193 (1 credit hour) simultaneously (a total of 4 credit hours)

Level 6: English 1109 (4 credit hours). After completing 1109, you must enroll in English 1110.03 and 1193 simultaneously (4 credit hours) to complete your first-year writing requirement.

We will send your results to be posted to your Student Testing Profile in SIS. Once the results are posted in your Buckeye Link profile, you will be able to work with your advisor to schedule for first-year writing. (Results will not be entered in Carmen.)

Carmen works best using Chrome on a PC or Mac. We do not recommend using the Carmen app for the exam. The app offers a limited version of Carmen and can make it harder to find and access some features. In addition, your work may not properly upload into the submission area.

We recommend taking the test on a tablet or computer, not your phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Placement exams are read and assessed every business day. Unless there is a technical issue or complication with your exam, you can expect to see your results in Carmen within 1-2 business days. After your result is posted in Carmen, it is sent to the Testing Center to be added to your Buckeye Link account. Your advisor will be able to see your result in SIS 24 hours after Testing updates it.

No. If you have taken the ESL Composition Placement test, you will be placed into EDUTL or English classes on the basis of that test. Please email us at [email protected] if you are asked to take both tests.

A placement result of 4 means you can register for English 1110.01 or 1110.02. A placement result of 5 means you must register for English 1110.03 and 1193. A placement result of 6 means you must register for English 1109.

If you experience technical difficulties, email [email protected] . We can reset your attempt and allow you to take the exam again. You will receive a new exam and have to begin again.

The best way to prepare for the Placement Exam is to ensure you're able to take the exam in a distraction-free environment with a reliable internet connection. You should also make sure you can devote the full 75 minutes to the exam. Take the exam when you're not sleepy or hungry. Read the instructions fully before you begin the exam. Other than these preparations, students should not need to "study" for the English Placement Exam.
