Ethnic Skin Fellowship Program

With a shortage of dermatologists in the country, especially medical dermatologists, there has never been a greater need for increased opportunities for training. Coupled with evidence the shortage is even more severe in underserved areas, the Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology developed the Ethnic Skin Fellowship Program to help address that need. Our Ethnic Skin Fellowship Program is still the only one of its kind in the United States, and has been an overwhelming success, growing exponentially over the past 5 years. Each year, we have one research fellow who devotes their time studying diseases that disproportionately impact ethnic minorities.

This year, we are also adding a diversity clerkship for a rotating medical student , which will be awarded to a student from groups underrepresented in medicine (African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans) who also has a financial hardship.

Our fellows are exposed to a wide range of common as well as rare dermatologic conditions from newborns to young adults. We care for patients both in our local community as well as patients who travel to Johns Hopkins seeking specialty care in pediatric dermatology from out of state and internationally. We provide services in our outpatient clinics at the David Rubenstein Child Health building (home of the world renowned Harriet Lane Clinic), as well as at our Green Spring Station site. We also serve as consultants for an active inpatient pediatric service at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

The fellow will also regularly attend multidisciplinary clinics and meetings, such as in vascular anomalies and late effects of burns. Comprehensive procedural training includes in-depth exposure to pulsed dye, Nd:YAG, fractionated ablative CO2, and Q-switched Alexandrite lasers. The fellow will have hands-on training in the full spectrum of dermatologic procedures in children of all ages.

Our fellowship also provides protected time for research, as well as mentorship for research projects. Regular didactics, including pediatric dermatology journal clubs, will be attended by the full division and can be tailored to the fellow's interests. Graduates of this ABD-certified Fellowship Training Program will be eligible for pediatric dermatology subspecialty certification by the American Board of Dermatology.

Dermatopathology Research Career Development Award

Advance your Career in Dermatopathology

The Dermatopathology Career Development Award (CDA) supports the academic career development of future intellectual leaders who demonstrate a strong commitment to advance the fields of dermatopathology and dermatology through research and/or education.

trnava-university-Lr_MKzNGhUU-unsplash

Know Before You Apply

All Foundation-funded research must be conducted in the U.S. under the sponsorship of a department/division of dermatology that is ACGME-approved for training in dermatology. Applicants must meet the DF’s general eligibility requirements, in addition to award-specific requirements presented on or before the time of funding. Applicants from minority populations are encouraged to apply.

The DF encourages applications concerning health issues impacting applicants from minority populations, including, but not limited to, racial minorities, sexual ¬ gender/LGBTQ minorities, and underserved/disadvantaged populations.

Am I eligible?

If you meet all of the requirements below, you may be eligible to apply for the Dermatopathology Research Career Development Award.

  • MD; MD, PhD; or DO degree
  • Completed training in a U.S. dermatology or pathology residency program and a U.S. fellowship program in dermatopathology
  • Under the mentorship of an experienced investigator(s)
  • Mentor must have an academic appointment in dermatology or another program at the sponsoring institution that is approved by the dermatology chair
  • Junior faculty member in a dept./div. of dermatology (through Asst. Prof. level) in the early stages of an academic career
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to skin research that can advance the field of dermatopathology
  • Strong institutional commitment for individual’s career development
  • Candidates with an MD; MD, PhD; or DO must be no greater than 12 years beyond their terminal degree – as of January 1, 2025.
  • Candidates with a PhD must be no greater than 8 years beyond their terminal degree – as of January 1, 2025.
  • Junior faculty member in a department or division of dermatology with an ACGME-approved dermatology residency program, through Assistant Professor level. Applicants can include instructors, postdoctoral fellows on an NIH T32 training grant and assistant professors.
  • Anyone who is a prior or current principal investigator (PI) on a federal grant is not eligible to receive a DF career development award. The following two exceptions apply:
  • CDA awardees may have effort on an NIH grant as long as he/she is not the senior PI who initiated the application and he/she does not have direct reporting responsibilities for this or prior federal awards. Total support from all federal grants must be less than 20% of their total effort during the term of the DF award.
  • The individual is the recipient of an NIH training grant or an equivalent grant from another granting agency.

Important Notes: An individual who receives a federal grant that eliminates their status as a “new investigator” is not eligible to maintain/receive a CDA. The Foundation utilizes the NIH definitions of “principal investigator” and “co- investigator” to administer this policy, as found in the Glossary of NIH Terms.

  • Research award recipients may not simultaneously hold a DF career development award and a grant. As a result, applicants applying for a new career development award may also apply for a grant though they cannot receive funding for both. Current CDA recipients applying for a second or third year of funding cannot also apply for a DF grant.
  • Strong institutional commitment for the individual’s career development.

All DF-funded research must be conducted in the U.S. under the sponsorship of a department/division of dermatology that is ACGME-approved for training in dermatology. A project to be performed as a part of the U.S. government research program (except Veterans Administration), or to be performed at a private foundation without an academic affiliation to dermatology, is not eligible for funding. A project involving human subjects must have IRB approval at the time funding commences, i.e., July 1, and throughout the term of the award.

An individual who is a prior or current principal investigator (PI) on a federal grant is not eligible to receive a DF career development award, fellowship or grant. The following two exceptions apply:

1) CDA awardees may have effort on an NIH grant as long as he/she is not the senior PI who initiated the application and he/she does not have direct reporting responsibilities for this or prior federal awards. Total support from all federal grants must be less than 20% of their total effort during the term of the DF award.

2) The individual is the recipient of an NIH training grant or an equivalent grant from another granting agency.

Upon receipt as the PI of a federal grant, a DF CDA or grant will be withdrawn. Note, an individual who receives a federal grant that eliminates their status as a "new investigator" is not eligible to maintain/receive a DF CDA.

Fellowship recipients may receive NIH training grants or an equivalent grant from another granting agency.

Important Note: The Foundation utilizes the NIH definitions of “principal investigator” and “coinvestigator” to administer this policy, as found in the Glossary of NIH Terms.

How do I apply for the Dermatopathology Research Career Development Award?

The DF will be accepting new applications for career development awards in July 2024, fellowships and research grants via our CDAFG Research Award Application Portal . The Applicant Instructions provided below include essential information potential applicants need to know to evaluate the various award opportunities and develop a successful application and research proposal. Interested individuals are strongly encouraged to read sections II and III before assembling their application.

The DF has also prepared a Quick Reference Guide to enable users to quickly acclimate to the online application system.

Application deadline: October 15, 2024

Biomarker Analysis of Transcriptome Signatures in Mycosis Fungoides Across Clinicopathologic Stages

Mycosis Fungoides (MF) is a rare disease that is difficult to diagnose and treat. Recent studies on the genomic signature of this disease have shown that MF is difficult to fully characterize. We propose that dissecting lymphocytes from affected tissue and performing transcriptome-based studies and biomarker analysis will allow us to improve diagnosis and treatment of MF across the clinical stages of this disease.
