10 Comic Blogs That Every Comic Book Fan Should Read

Comic books are probably the first things that help us to dream. Through the growing up years, comic books and the capers in them shield us from the harsher realities of the world outside, where there are no superheroes, adventurous reporters, or philosophical dogs. Even when we grow over to more adult forms of entertainment, the magic spell of comics remains.

Most of us might now read them or watch them on TV every day, but who can deny that it does bring back a whiff of the wonder years. But then there are many who follow comic books. After all, the enduring culture of comic books is not due to the kiddie crowd alone. Comic books continue to get fresh leases of life even in this digital age. As these ten comic book websites show, the web has become a portal into the world of comics. Enter this portal and catch up with these ten comic book blogs.

Comics Alliance

The AOL website could be a favored destination if you like to follow everything and anything that has to do with superheroes, villains, video games, graphic novels, manga, toys, comic book conventions, previews, and reviews. A lineup of comic book experts put in their worth every day on this comic book blog. Some of the sections you might like to visit are – Humor, Videos, and Opinion .

Comics worth Reading

The blog comes straight to the point when discussing graphic novels, manga, and comic books. The opinions expressed might help you pick up the right ones to read. The blunt opinionated pieces take in both the good and the bad in the world of comics. Check out the Comics Classics section for some great recommendations.

Comics in Crisis

This is a simple BlogSpot blog, but I like reading it because it dives into the world of comics and discusses what works and what doesn’t, for instance turning comic books into films. The weekly updated blog also has a poll that you can participate in.

Bleeding Cool

The blog covers comic news and movies based on comics in equal measure. Apart from the regular fare of news, the site is also about gossip and rumors spilling out of the genre. The writing is not neutral but individualistic which makes reading all the inner workings of the comic book industry quite engaging. The forum is the place comic book fans can call their own.

Comic Vine has quite a few interesting sections that make this colorful site a must visit. The site has set out to build up the world's largest comic book encyclopedia. You can browse through a long list of List of Comic Book Story Arcs . Comic Vine’s podcasts and videos serve up multimedia entertainment. But for some casual fun, I always head to the Play section where there are quizzes, trivia, and superhero battles to be won.

Chris’s Invincible Super Blog

A really nice comic’s blog that’s a humorous take on anything that has to do with comic books. You know that Chris Sims will hit your funny bone when you consider that he also freelances with Cracked.com. What’s cool is that he watches the best and the worst that’s out there and spouts on both.

This site positions itself as a one-stop point for comic book buffs. Comixology is a digital comic’s platform which you can use to rate and discuss comics. It is an online community with an interface with retailers. You can use the site to watch for new releases and setup pre-order lists. The site also includes weekly columns, blogs, news and podcasts. The web app has its own Android, iPhone, iPod and iPad apps plus a web reader. Tie-ins with the big names of the comic publishing world like DC Comics allows them to host editions for subscription based reading and download. There are some 538 free comics available for online reading though.

ComicMix is not only about comics but also a bit about comic books inspired television, movies and video games. The blog is a commentary on the happening in the industry by some of its veterans. It’s all about news, facts, discussions, and reviews.

Comic Book Resources

One of the better known comic book websites for enthusiasts, CBR is a complete resource if you are looking for comic book news and reviews. The regular columns on CBR like Permanent Damage, Pipeline, Where The Hell Am I etc each take a decidedly different look at the world of comics as well as the world around us.

If you like free giveaways then you will like the ones this site has for comic book fans. The site covers news, conventions, comic culture, and less interesting items like the financial health of the comic book industry.

If you haven’t read a comic book in your life, then these ten websites won’t be too much of fun. But I am betting that your child perhaps is reading a comic right now or at least watching a show based on one. If then point him to these as well as these other three posts based on the colorful world of comics .

The Maze Agency logo

I Love The Maze Agency — But I Can’t Support Its Return

There are so few mystery comics out there — not thrillers, not blood-soaked serial killer books — and one of the all-time best is The Maze Agency. I gave a brief history of the series back in 2006. The series was created and written by Mike W. Barr. The first artist was Alan Davis, for an ashcan, and once the series started (at the end of 1988), the first few issues were Adam Hughes’ first regular continuing work, inked by […]

The Helix Titles That Live On; Time Breakers Crowdfunding

Seeing a note about Time Breakers having one day left in its crowdfunding campaign got me wondering — just how many of the Helix titles have been reborn? Helix was a DC imprint, back when they had lots of those, dedicated to science fiction (loosely applied, as they also had a vampire comic). Wikipedia says it ran 1996-1998, which sounds about right. It’s best remembered these days for launching Transmetropolitan, the future-painted Hunter S. Thompson comic by Warren Ellis that […]

Tales of the Tendo Family Volume 1

Tales of the Tendo Family Volume 1

I don’t read historical manga much any more, as I find not understanding the references off-putting. I gave this a try because a smart editor mentioned to me that it was by Ken Saito, author of The Name of the Flower, which I remembered enjoying when CMX put it out 15 years ago. I’m glad I did, because this setup is intriguing. Tales of the Tendo Family is out next week from One Peace Books. The characters are a bit […]

Vincent Mallié Wins Doylean Honor for A Study in Scarlet

Magnetic Press not only puts out graphic novels, they also release art books, and one of them was right up my alley. I’ve mentioned their edition of A Study in Scarlet before, when it was on sale last Thanksgiving. However, I was recently reminded that I was remiss in congratulating the artist, Vincent Mallié, on receiving a Doylean Honor this past January. The honors are awarded yearly by the ACD Society, “a community dedicated to studying and enjoying the works […]

Exclusive Preview: Usagi Yojimbo: The Crow #1

Out next week, on April 3, is Usagi Yojimbo: The Crow #1, the first issue of a five-part miniseries. Per the publisher, Dark Horse, in this story, Usagi and Yukichi rescue a merchant being attacked by bandits, only to discover that the person they rescued is a criminal with a huge reward. Which means the bounty hunters Gen and Stray Dog and others are also after him! As always, the series is written and illustrated by Stan Sakai, with colors […]

Sheridan Bell and the Vanishing Beast

The easiest way to get me to read something new these days is to tell me how much you were influenced by Sherlock Holmes. (This should not surprise my readers.) I found Sheridan Bell and the Vanishing Beast at the recent “Nerd Made: Madison“, put on by Madison Makers Market. It was kind of an arts and crafts fair for geeks. The author, Em Rowene, had a table and explained to me how the main character here, Sheridan Bell, was […]

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman

Sherlock Returns to Major US Streaming Service

The best-known Sherlock Holmes to many folks these days was played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC series. It ran 2010-2017 and consisted of 13 episodes (including the historical special The Abominable Bride). There’s even a comic adaptation! However, the series hasn’t been easy to find lately. Of course, there are always the physical discs to purchase (or maybe check out from your library). But the show left Netflix back in 2021. It’s been available on BritBox since then, but […]

Mrs. Watson: Untold Stories

I found the author’s previous Sherlockian work, My Dear Watson, a chore to get through, but this followup took a different approach that I much preferred. In that earlier book by L.A. Fields, the premise is that Holmes and Watson are lovers, and the un-first-named Mrs. Watson knows that. The book then consists of her making jealous remarks about them while retelling great amounts of existing stories and cases. She doesn’t like Holmes much at all, for obvious reasons, and […]

All Tomorrow’s Parties (review)

Creator: Koren Shadmi Humanoids, August 2023 This title is a harsh, embarrassing, wonderful documentary. All Tomorrow’s Parties details the rise and fall of avant-garde 1960s band The Velvet Underground. This is publisher Humanoids’ promotional blurb: An examination of some of New York rock’n’roll’s most iconic figures—The Velvet Underground & Andy Warhol—and the relationship that distorted their lives and changed pop culture. Born from the iconic NY art and music scene of the late ’60s and the brilliant, untamed minds of its founding members Lou Reed and John Cale, The Velvet Underground are now considered rock ‘n’ roll royalty…but that wasn’t always so. From surviving off oatmeal and donating blood for rent money, to the fame of being the de facto house band of Andy Warhol’s Factory and the objects of the socialite’s fleeting affection, to the unraveling of Cale and Reed’s creative partnership in a storm of jealousy and paranoia,

Best Ways to Read Digital Comics in 2024

Tablets are a great way to read your favorite digital comics from Marvel, DC and others. Check out our top picks!

Our Experts

comic book review blogs

  • Apple software beta tester, "Helps make our computers and phones work!" - Zach's grandparents

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise.

Apple iPad 2021 10.2-inch

Collecting and reading physical comic books can be a fun hobby, but those comics take up a lot of space if you've been collecting for years. Plus physical comics can also be difficult to find, especially if you're looking for older issues or you don't live near a local comic shop.

Luckily, many of the major comics publishers have digitized their comics and developed their own subscription services and apps. That means you can access some of the most popular and influential comics throughout the years, like The Dark Knight Returns on DC Universe Infinite and House of M on Marvel Unlimited .

You can download many of these apps to your smartphone, but its smaller screen might make reading panels uncomfortable or difficult. Tablet screens are larger and allow you to view whole comic pages at once, and they make it easier to view splash pages -- a comic page or two that's mostly one image.

Here are the best ways you can read digital comics.

Best tablets for digital comics

These are the best tablets you can use to access and read your favorite digital comics.

Best entry-point tablet

Apple ipad (2021).

Despite this iPad being a few years old, CNET'S Scott Stein said it's still good enough to do most things you'd want to do on a tablet. That includes reading your favorite comics. The screen is 10.2 inches and the starting price ($249) is low compared with most tablets, which means you can buy more graphic novels and single issue comics -- or prosthetics for your Hellboy cosplay.

Apple iPad 2021 10.2-inch

Best high-end Android tablet

Samsung galaxy tab s8 plus.

If you want a tablet that can handle demanding tasks during your day and that lets you unwind with some comics at night, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Plus is for you. CNET's Joshua Goldman said this tablet could almost replace your laptop, and it has a 12.4-inch screen, so you can see all the cameos and details when the X-Men host the annual Hellfire Gala.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Plus

Best portable tablet

Apple ipad mini (2021).

Apple's iPad Mini is the smallest tablet on this list, with a screen size of 8.3 inches and a weight of just over half a pound. But like Ant-Man, that smaller size packs a surprisingly powerful punch. Stein found that the Mini is powerful enough that you won't crash the system with current apps. However, the $400 price tag might be more than some people want to pay for portability.

Amazon fire hd 10 (update: currently unavailable).

Amazon's Fire HD 10  is the cheapest device on this list ($150), making it a great option for people who want a tablet but don't want to spend a lot of money. You can easily access comics and manga on this tablet through Amazon's Comixology app, but you'll have to sideload other comic apps. Don't worry -- that's easier than it sounds. I'm not Ultron, and it took me only about 15 minutes to get Marvel Unlimited working on my Fire HD 10. Once you get your app loaded, you're set to read whatever comics that app offers.

Best subscriptions and apps for digital comics

Here are the best subscriptions and apps to access your digital comics.

Marvel Unlimited

Marvel Unlimited app icon

That large spike in Marvel searches around 2018 coincides with the release of Avengers: Infinity War.

According to Google Trends, more people have searched for Marvel Comics than other major comics publishers over the past 20 years. The Marvel Cinematic Universe probably factors into these searches, but the first MCU film -- Iron Man -- was released in 2008 and Marvel Comics was beating other publishers before the film's release. If you're into Spider-Man, X-Men, Captains America or Marvel, Thor or the Avengers, you'll find them in Marvel Unlimited.

Marvel Unlimited subscriptions start at $10 for a monthly subscription and $69 for an annual subscription, and the service gives you access to old and new comics featuring beloved characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man and Captain America. The app has over 30,000 Marvel comics available, and it adds new comics weekly.

You can download the Marvel Unlimited app from Apple's App Store or the Google Play store.

DC Universe Infinite

The DC Universe Infinite app badge

It appears that films helped spike interest in comic characters over the last 20 years.

According to Google Trends, DC Comics might be the second most popular comics publisher, but then, it has Batman. Based on Google Trends data, the Dark Knight is the most popular superhero over the past 20 years compared with other well-known characters like Spider-Man, Superman, Captain America and Iron Man. DC Universe Infinite gives you access to comics starring the DC Trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, as well as teams like the Justice League, Teen Titans and Suicide Squad.

A DC Universe Infinite subscription starts at $8 for a monthly subscription or $75 for an annual subscription and gives you access to the full runs of archetypal comics like Action Comics and Detective Comics. You also have access to over 32,000 other comics, including influential works like Watchmen and The Sandman, and new comics are added every week.

You can download the DC Universe Infinite app from the App Store and Google Play .

The Comixology app badge

The Comixology app is a digital comics storefront owned by Amazon, and it has over 230,000 comics, manga and graphic novels. While you can purchase comics from either Marvel or DC through the app, you can also purchase popular nonsuperhero comics, like Saga and The Walking Dead.

Comixology also has a subscription service, called Comixology Unlimited, which you can subscribe to for $6 a month . With a subscription you can access over 45,000 comics and manga, including collected volumes of The Walking Dead and Attack on Titan, and a library of Comixology Originals from creators like Scott Snyder. You also get discounts on some digital single issue comics.

You can access Comixology from the Kindle app from the App Store and Google Play .

The Libby app badge

Libby is an app that connects you to your local public library's eBook collection, including any digital comics your library offers. However, that also means you're limited to only the digital comics your library offers. So you might not have access to older or newer comics, or comics that aren't as popular or mainstream.

Libby's biggest strength is its cost: free. All you need is a library card, a tablet to read on and a love for comics. That means you can save your money for tickets to Comic Con.

You can download Libby from the App Store or Google Play .

Kingdom Riders TP – IDW Publishing releases a new graphic novel set in a dangerous fantasy world. Kayla has never cared much about the world outside her town or the wildly popular Kingdom Races. She survives her peasant life by hunting with her giant toad, Grok, and providing Lord Sul with special items for his race banquets. But when her best friend Mal finds herself in trouble, Kayla chooses to enter the Kingdom Races as a rider to save her. With a prize for winning more than she could ever imagine and control of the entire kingdom at stake, Kayla finds herself thrust into political intrigue and lurking danger. As she ventures into the wilder world, putting her own life at risk for friends, both old and new, Kayla must do what no one has ever done before: Finish the Kingdom Races. Fans of Hunger Games and Amulet will not want to miss this new title.

Summer Vamp HC – Random House Graphic gives readers a look at what happens when a very human kid ends up at a summer camp for vampires. The only thing Maya is looking forward to after a lackluster school year is cooking and mixing ingredients in the kitchen. She gets more joy from that than mingling with her peers. But when her dad’s girlfriend registers her for a culinary summer camp, her disappointing summer is saved! Things don’t go as planned though, when instead of baking pastries and cooking pasta, Maya finds herself surrounded by kids that look pale, have pointy fangs, and hate garlic! She is going to have a lot to learn if she is going to survive this summer, and she might even make some friends along the way. This title is perfect for fans of Witches of Brooklyn.

From botanical gardens to plant sales and garden tours, it’s time to make like the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” and while away the hours, conferring with flowers.
