The 7 parts of a cleaning business plan

Each cleaning service business plan has seven important parts. The best way to write your own plan is to read this article, then come back with a pen and notebook and jot down your best answers and to-do items. Writing the plan will be a lot easier if you’ve answered all the questions first.

1. Executive summary

Since you haven’t written your house cleaning business plan yet, you’ll skip this part for now. Then when you’ve finished writing the rest, you’ll come back and summarize your plan at the top.

  • A very brief overview of your services

  • Why you’re writing the plan (for example, to get a loan or to increase your odds of success)

2. Company description

What is your company all about, and how will it be structured? Write about 100 words on:

  • Your business structure ( LLC , corporation , sole proprietorship )
  • The types of consumers you’ll serve
  • A complete list of your service offerings (for example, cleaning homes and Airbnbs)
  • Your business goals

3. Cleaning services you’ll offer

Re-list your service offerings, and this time, write a short description of each one. Include:

  • Benefits to the customer of each service
  • Why your services are better than the competition’s

4. Market analysis

This is where you show how much you understand the cleaning industry. Include:

  • A list of your different types of customers (like property managers and homeowners)
  • How many customers are in your area
  • A detailed description of the other cleaning companies near you and their strengths and weaknesses

A commercial cleaning business handles spaces like offices, hospitals, schools, retail storefronts and other large spaces where businesses operate. This service is providing janitors to large businesses that need to keep everything clean and in order so people can move through the spaces easily.

It’s also likely that you’ll have to work overnight in order not to interrupt the company’s daily business operations and enroll your cleaners in classes or obtain certifications. Budgeting in the beginning requires thinking through all of the stages the employees of your business will go through in the cleaning process. If you need any specialized equipment, you’ll want to invest in that upfront so you can get started immediately. Special equipment like floor waxers might require training for your employees as well.

In addition to transporting equipment, you may also need to provide transportation for your employees. But even if you expect employees to find their own way to the job site, a qualified individual from your company should oversee the transport of the materials and make sure they get from the office to the job site. A transportation budget should be an early consideration.

Cleaning equipment will be a big expense. In addition to specialized cleaning equipment, you’ll need a large stock of cleaning materials like brooms, mops, disinfectants, protective equipment for employees and much more. It’s important to keep these well stocked, especially during a busy week, in case of any supply chain shortages or other random occurrences.

Once you decide how niche or general your offerings are going to be and what kind of cleaning you’re going to do, you can start to develop a marketing plan.

First, identify your target clients. You’ll want to advertise your services in places where your clients congregate, online or in person. For cleaning family homes, you can advertise on websites like Nextdoor or put up fliers in local businesses.

For commercial cleaning services, you’ll be looking into signing larger contracts with property managers. With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Elements of economic plan include several new tax incentives and preferences

Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris today  released details  of elements of her economic plan. Among other items, Harris proposed several new tax incentives and preferences, including the following:

  • A tax incentive for builders of homes sold to first time homebuyers
  • An expansion of existing tax incentives for builders of affordable rental housing
  • A tax credit for first time homebuyers
  • A restoration of the American Rescue Plan Act version of the child tax credit (CTC) providing up to $3,600 per child
  • A new expansion of the CTC providing a $6,000 tax credit for children in the first year of life
  • A $1,500 expansion of the earned income tax credit available to lower income individuals
  • A tax cut for Affordable Care Act premiums

The plan does not include specifics on whether the revenue cost of these items would be offset, though it does state that Harris will ask “the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations to pay their fair share” and that the plan will reduce the deficit.

Harris also calls for Congress to pass the  Stop Predatory Investing Act , which would eliminate certain tax benefits for investors who own large numbers of single-family homes.

KPMG observation

Notably, with regard to President Biden’s oft-stated pledge not to increase taxes on those making less than $400,000, “Vice President Harris is committed to ensuring no one earning less than $400,000 a year will pay more in new taxes.”

This pledge suggests that, for the $4 trillion of “tax cliff” items scheduled to expire at the end of 2025, Harris appears committed to extending those tax cuts for individuals making $400,000 or less. Though it is worth noting that use of the word “new” raises some uncertainty as to how the pledge will be applied.

Harris does not in today’s release endorse, or otherwise mention, the official tax plan of the Biden-Harris Administration, the so-called  Green Book .  Her vow to raise taxes on large corporations and the wealthy, however, is consistent with many of the proposals included in the Administration’s plan. Among other things, that plan calls for a 7% increase in the corporate tax rate, a number of new taxes on multinational businesses, and new taxes on high-earning individuals. Absent from today’s release is a proposal to exempt tip income from taxation. Harris has previously indicated that she (along with Republican nominee Donald Trump) supports this idea.

Finally, it should be noted that the sum total cost of all these proposals is several trillion dollars. Pursuing all of these ideas is likely to put significant pressure on finding new tax increases to offset the cost of these items.
