The Top 10 Destinations in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s rich culture and history, gorgeous landscape and scenery, and plentiful wildlife-spotting opportunities are the main reasons the country tops many travelers’ bucket lists. And due to its relatively small size, many of the best attractions and destinations are within only a couple of hours of each other. In one day, if you’re on a tight schedule, you could spend the morning at one of the country’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, go on a safari in the afternoon, and then in the evening, relax and enjoy a cup of tea from one of the hill country plantations. Or, with more time, allow the opportunity for spontaneous exploration—road tripping throughout the country offers scenic views almost everywhere, and you might pull over for an elephant sighting or two along the way!
Jamie Hergenrader
Kandy, a major city in Sri Lanka’s hill country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and one corner of the country’s Cultural Triangle. It’s surrounded by mountains of rainforest and tea plantations and is home to a beautiful lake within the city. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred temple that houses Buddha’s tooth; wander the city’s colorful streets, and admire the architecture while sampling food from the many street vendors; walk around the lake for scenic views of the lake itself and also the colorful buildings that dot the hillsides around it; and make the quick drive outside of the city to the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens to visit its orchid house and its spice garden, the latter of which will take you on an olfactory tour of the country’s native spices.
This massive rock formation is not only a breathtaking sight to take in as you approach, jutting up from the flat lands that surround it but also a place of cultural and historical significance. The UNESCO World Heritage site was a fort and palace that dates back to the fifth century. A network of winding staircases and paths will lead you to the top of the rock if you’re game to do the 1,217-step climb. Along the way, you’ll get panoramic views of the valley around you, you’ll pass ancient paintings by monks on the rock walls, and learn about the kingdom that once called this rock home. If you plan on making the entire climb (which we highly recommend), arrive at the park at opening time—you’ll avoid the afternoon heat and beat most of the crowds.
Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura, one of the three corners of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the current capital city of the North Central Province, was the first ancient capital in Sri Lanka, thriving for more than 1,300 years until it was abandoned in 993. Tourists visit this UNESCO World Heritage site to explore the well-preserved ruins and significant Buddhist history. Several dagobas, distinctive dome-shaped memorials, remain in the city, one of which is said to house Buddha’s collarbone. Another important site is the Bodhi tree found in the Mahamewna Gardens —it’s the oldest known human-planted tree in the world, and it grew from the southern branch of a sacred fig tree in India, the tree under which Gautama Buddha was said to have gained enlightenment.
Polonnaruwa
Jamie Hergenrader
The third corner of the Cultural Triangle , Polonnaruwa became the second capital after Anuradhapura was abandoned. Like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is a draw for visitors interested in touring the city’s history and ruins, including those of the royal palace and other royal spaces, the quadrangle (a raised, walled-off area of monuments and Buddha statues), and dagobas. You’ll undoubtedly spot many monkeys (toque macaques) in the area, and that population of native, endangered monkeys was featured in Disney’s nature documentary, “Monkey Kingdom.”
Yala National Park
Yala National Park, located along the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is the most visited national park in the country, primarily because of the chance to spot the leopards in the area—it is home to one of the largest concentrations of leopards in the world. (The land became a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and then a national park in 1938.) Although it comprises five blocks, only two of them are open to the public for safari to preserve and protect the majority of the land. Between February and July is the best time to visit; during these months, the lower water levels bring more animals out in the open searching for water. However, the park can get crowded in these peak months, and higher traffic through the park can lessen your chances of spotting one of the elusive leopards. Even so, you’ll still have the opportunity to see elephants, crocodiles, and water buffaloes.
Minneriya National Park
TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove
Sri Lanka has plenty of safari opportunities, but Minneriya National Park is known for having the world's largest gatherings of Asian elephants. Previously an elephant sanctuary, the land was converted to a national park in 1997, and Asian elephants still freely roam the grounds in large herds. While you'll likely get a glimpse of several whenever you visit, the dry season from June to September is the best time to visit. This is when the elephants (sometimes as many as 300) will congregate around the reservoir. It might be most famous for these elephant sightings, but the park is also home to more than 170 species of birds, leopards, monkeys, and other wildlife.
Many tourists skip Colombo to set off for the country’s beautiful nature destinations, but the capital city deserves some of your time . Colombo comprises several distinct neighborhoods that showcase the old and new—from ancient temples and colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and city parks. It’s easy (and recommended) to wander and simply take in the sights as you go. One impressive architectural sight you won’t be able to miss is the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid (also known as the Red Mosque), a red and white mosque in Colombo’s Pettah neighborhood. Admiring it from the outside is intriguing enough, but if you want to go inside, ensure you’ve dressed appropriately; women need to cover their hair, arms, and legs.
This fortified old city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is another of the country’s impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of the best things to do is walk along the fort’s ramparts that give you a view out to the water and inward toward the fort and city. You can also take a self-guided tour of the fort to learn about its history and architecture. Although the fort is the main attraction for visitors to the area, Galle is a prime destination for shopping as well; wander the pedestrian-friendly streets to check out the many art galleries, upscale markets, and boutique stores selling clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, and home goods.
Nuwara Eliya
Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest exports, so a trip to the rolling hills of tea country is well worth your time. Nuwara Eliya boasts hundreds of acres of tea plantations and several tea production facilities you can visit to learn about the entire tea-making process, from planting to picking and steeping at home. Once you’ve had your fill of tea, be sure to explore the other gorgeous surroundings of Nuwara Eliya, such as the manicured and well-maintained Victoria Park, Lake Gregory for a day on the water, or a lakeside picnic, or the beautiful, 350-foot tall Ramboda Falls.
As one of the main beach destinations in the country, Mirissa attracts those looking for a laid-back, leisurely vacation of days lounging on the sand and nights out on the town. Among the gorgeous beaches in Mirissa, Mirissa Beach and Secret Beach are two of the best for their beauty and seclusion, but neither one gets too crowded. If you’d rather be out on the water, Mirissa is a surfer’s paradise, especially from October to April, and it’s also a popular destination for whale watching tours to spot blue whales. After a day in the sun, hit some of the casual but lively restaurants and bars, some of which are right along the beach, making them a perfect setting for a sunset cocktail.

There are several highly religious sites for the religious devotee, and unbelievable historical tourist attractions for history buffs in Sri Lanka . However, no one can dispute Sri Lanka’s incredible natural beauty. Whether it be en-route to a perfect surf break, visiting a historical site or on a pilgrimage, lush greenery and exotic animals are never far away.
15. Nine Arch Bridge [SEE MAP]
One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights is the Nine Arch Bridge in the small mountain town of Ella . This viewpoint offers spectacular panoramas of the surrounding area, which is made up of verdant greenery and tea fields.
Visitors can watch trains roll over the bridge as they make their way along the Demodara Loop. Constructed in the early days of the railway expansion in Sri Lanka, the bridge is particularly impressive because it is made of cement, stone and brick, without the use of any steel.
14. Mihintale [SEE MAP]
Mihintale is a mountain near the town of Anuradhapura. Its summit has much spiritual significance to the Buddhist community. It’s believed that on this mountain top a Buddhist monk named Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa and together this meeting introduced Buddhism to the country.
Monk Mahinda impressed the King with the peacefulness of the Buddhist doctrine and his contented, serene nature. The King subsequently renounced war, and went on to spread peace throughout the nation. There are several impressive religious and historical structures on and around Mihintale Mountain. Hundreds of pilgrims visit the site each year.
13. Unawatuna [SEE MAP]
This white sand beach in the small seaside town of Unawatuna is a great place to relax. There are a number of snorkeling and diving operators in town who take advantage of the abundance of coral reefs just off the beach.
Colorful fish and plentiful turtles are the norm in these waters. There are a number of great dining options along the beach, which welcome visitors to use their sun loungers and relax the day away with a drink in hand.
12. Gal Viharaya [SEE MAP]
Visitors can find Gal Viharaya in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Gal Viharaya is a famous Buddhist site and is celebrated for its many caves and large sculptures of Buddha which are carved into the rock faces. They are extremely well preserved, even though they were crafted in the 12th century.
To the side of one of the statues, a code of conduct is inscribed. The code, when followed, was meant to purify the Buddhist monks and bring them together under one order. It was created by a very famous king: King Parakramabahu the first. Today, Gal Viharaya is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular sites of pilgrimage.
11. Kataragama Festival [SEE MAP]
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Festival takes place every year in July or August and is dedicated to one of the Hindu gods. It takes place over a two-week period and people from all over the world come to join in.
The festival is jam-packed with parades of elephants and colorfully dressed performers. There are countless traditional dances that take place; with musicians, acrobats, and fire-breathers feeding into the festival’s contagious energy.
10. Udawalawe National Park [SEE MAP]
There are few places in the world where elephant sightings are so frequent. However, elephants are not the only animals to see within Udawalawe National Park; peacocks, jackals, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys and deer also roam the area.
Safaris are most popular in the early morning hours when animals are at their most active. The biodiversity of the park can be attributed to its varied landscape; it is flanked by mountain ranges to the north with wetlands and rivers hugging the grasslands and forests at the base of the mountains.
9. Ravana Falls [SEE MAP]
The beautiful Ravana Falls are used for bathing in the hot summer months. In the rainy season, the water flow is exceptionally strong and is an impressive sight. The falls are part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, and the nearby cave complex is rich in local legend.
Conveniently located on the main road on the way to Ella town, the caves are a common stop off point for visitors during their journey. Many cheeky monkeys live in the surrounding trees and they are often seen on the roadside dining on fruit. However, don’t let them get too close, as sometimes they can get over-friendly with visitors.
8. Dambulla Cave Temple [SEE MAP]
The Dambulla Cave Temple is a sacred Buddhist site. There is no entry fee to get into the temple on full-moon days; however, these days are especially busy because of the religious significance of this lunar phase. Devotees from all over the world make pilgrimage to this place.
There are over 80 caves documented in the area, but the most famous five are outfitted with impressive statues and paintings. Some of the caves date back to 1000 BC, when prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived within them, so it is unsurprising that they would have created temples inside at that time. If you do plan to visit, please be aware that visitors must cover their shoulders and legs and remove shoes before entering the temple.
7. Mirissa [SEE MAP]
Mirissa is the ultimate Sri Lankan beach getaway. The beautiful long beach is flanked by tall overhanging palm trees and lined with modern restaurants and hotels. The restaurants have western style food at Sri Lankan prices. Just off the beach is Parrot Rock. It has a small staircase leading to the top that offers great views of the ocean and coastline.
Day trips from Mirissa include whale watching, snorkeling and surfing. Weligama, just a few kilometers from Mirissa, is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka to learn surfing. Come happy hour and into the evening, many the restaurants turn their venues into beach clubs and pump out drinks and tunes.
6. Arugam Bay [SEE MAP]
Arugam Bay is revered by surfers. This small town on the east coast of Sri Lanka embodies the quintessential laid-back surf lifestyle. The Main Point surf break is within walking distance from the town center, but is only recommended for advanced or intermediate surfers.
Otherwise, Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm are two great surf beaches for beginner and intermediate surfers; a short tuk-tuk ride will take you there. Often elephants and peacocks can be spotted beside the road, just outside of town. The main strip in Arugam Bay town is lined with restaurants and hotels where you can dine on anything from traditional Sri Lankan curry to full English breakfasts.
5. Temple of the Tooth [SEE MAP]
The Temple of the Tooth is a highly sacred place. The temple contains one of Buddha’s teeth. Legend has it that the tooth was taken from the Buddha on his deathbed, then smuggled to Sri Lanka from India. It was smuggled in the hair of a princess, after her father’s kingdom had been besieged.
It immediately became an object of great importance and has been celebrated and paraded throughout history. However, many attempts have also been made to steal or destroy the tooth. Twice daily, pujas are held to celebrate the relic and offer visitors and devotees the chance to get a glimpse of the tooth within its casing.
4. Adam's Peak [SEE MAP]
At the summit of Adam’s Peak is a footprint cast in stone. It has spiritual significance to a number of different religions, however, there is currently a Buddhist monastery at the summit. To the Buddhists, the footprint is that of Buddha’s; to Christians, the footprint is Adam’s; and to Hindus, the footprint is attributed to Shiva.
The site is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially on full moon nights. The trek to the top of the mountain to see the footprint is via a steep staircase containing over 5000 steps. The trail is lined with many tea stalls and food shops which act as places of rest. Most people begin their hike at 2:30 am to reach the summit in time for sunrise.
3. Galle Fort [SEE MAP]
It is easy to get lost in the cobblestoned alleyways and streets within Galle Fort. Today the area is full of modern restaurants, hotels, clothing, and souvenir shops. Meanwhile, snake charmers and buskers line the seawall.
However, the fort was not always such a cosmopolitan spot. A basic fort was constructed by the Portuguese when they made their first landing to the island in 1505. When the Dutch eventually seized control of Galle , they made a number of improvements; including the enormous sea wall that still lines the fort. Galle Fort is an excellent example of what the synthesis between European and Asian architecture looks like.
2. Yala National Park [SEE MAP]
Yala National Park is made up of spellbinding vistas and a true abundance of Sri Lankan wildlife. It has the highest density of leopards in the world, so chances of seeing them are very high.
Although leopards are the main attraction here, they are followed closely by elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. The park is divided into five blocks; some of which were zoned to hunters until Yala became a national park in 1938. Ensure you make time to visit the very informative visitor center at the entrance of the park for insightful displays about the area.
1. Sigiriya Rock Fort [SEE MAP]
Sigiriya Rock Fort is utterly impressive. The rock walls rise up 200 meters from the ground, only to give way to a flat plateau at their summit. There are steep stairwells to reach the top and many frescos to marvel at on the way up. At the top, you can find the remains of an ancient civilization, including relics of a palace and monastery.
It would have taken true engineering ingenuity to build a structure at this height so many centuries ago. Around the rock fort are many important caves and gardens; impressively, they are some of the first landscaped gardens in the world.

Reasons Why You Should Visit Sri Lanka
The tropical climate, beautiful beaches and incredible food of Sri Lanka are just some of the many reasons to include the South Asian country on your travel wish list. In this island nation known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, you can study history by visiting the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, witness a giant gathering of Asian elephants in Minneriya National Park, or catch some waves at Arugam Bay or Hikkaduwa.
Sri Lanka is a great place to visit for water sport and wildlife enthusiasts and a haven for history buffs. As well as a guide to some of the best things to see and do in Sri Lanka, we’ve picked a selection of places to stay to help you put together your travel plan. Or, if you’d prefer not to have to think about constructing your own itinerary, consider joining Culture Trip’s specially curated 12-day Sri Lanka tour, led by our local insider .
A tropical climate all year round
Sri Lanka experiences two monsoon seasons, which affect different parts of the country during different months. This means that, at any given time, travellers can expect a sunny climate somewhere on the island. The southwest monsoon is between May and July, which leaves the north rain-free, and the northeast monsoon is between October and January, which leaves the south ready to be explored.
Make the most of the weather with a stay at one of the best luxury hotels in Sri Lanka .
Amazing food
Sri Lanka is blessed with a distinctive cuisine flavoured with exotic spices. The famed rice and curry spread includes an intense and fragrant lentil and chicken or fish curry with rice and vegetables on the side. The fish curry is highly recommended by locals. Kottu is a popular street food of Tamil origin with chopped roti flatbread and usually egg, meat, vegetables and salna — a spicy sauce on the side. Make sure you try egg hoppers too.
Rare land animals
Sri Lanka has 26 national parks and two marine parks. The most well known, Yala National Park, has the highest density of leopards in the world, 215 species of bird, mugger crocodiles and other reptiles, while the coastline bordering the park is a nesting spot for five species of sea turtle. Adjacent to Yala is Udawalawe National Park, home to herds of elephants and rare birds such as the changeable hawk-eagle and the serpent eagle.
Pigeon Island attracts many travellers looking to experience the marine life surrounding the island. The reef off the island consists of about 100 species of colourful corals and up to 300 species of reef fish, making snorkelling in these waters an incredible experience.

Glorious beaches
Sri Lanka has some of the most pristine coastline in Asia, with many unspoiled sandy beaches with palm trees and turquoise waters. Head to Mirissa if you’d like to soak up the sun in peace, while Unawatuna is better suited for those in the mood for beach parties. For adrenaline junkies, Bentota, with water activities such as kitesurfing and para-cycling, is the place to be.
Make sure you check out the best beach resorts in Sri Lanka to help you decide where to stay.
Whales and dolphins
Sri Lanka is probably the only place in the world where you can view a species of both the world’s largest land mammal, the elephant, and the largest water mammal, the blue whale. Five species of whale, including the blue whale and the minke whale, are regularly seen in the seas off Kalpitiya. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot spinner dolphins too. The peak months for whale watching in Kalpitiya are between January and March.
Gorgeous landscapes and hiking trails
Sri Lanka’s abundance of flora and fauna means it has beautiful nature trails , with stunning vistas and waterfalls , misty mountains rising into the clouds, hillsides covered with paddy fields and tea estates and the occasional peacock or deer crossing your path.
For beginners, the Demodara Rail Hike in Ella is a great option that takes hikers past Nine Arches Bridge, a colonial-era viaduct. More experienced hikers should consider going to Kirigalpotha or the Knuckles Mountain Range, widely regarded as the most beautiful hiking trail in the country.
To make the most of all the things to do in Ella, you should book a stay at one of these hand-picked hotels .
Super surfing
Easy access to the waves, the great number of sand-bottom breaks and the ever-consistent swells have made Sri Lanka a popular surfing destination. Arugam Bay is arguably the best spot for surfing and regularly hosts international competitions such as Red Bull Ride My Wave. Not only does it have the best swells, but the wide range of choices means there are plenty of options for both novices and experienced surfers. Many other coastal towns, such as Hikkaduwa, offer great surfing opportunities too.
If you’re looking for a place to stay in Hikkaduwa, check out this list of the best hotels for every traveller .
Millennia of Buddhist heritage
Buddhism has played a key role here over the centuries and there are several ancient temples dotted throughout Sri Lanka. These ancient places of worship often feature inspiring architecture and designs that were far ahead of their times. The most well-known example is the Temple of the Tooth, though the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi (a sacred fig tree in Anuradhapur) and the Ruwanwelisaya stupa, are also must-visits.
Intriguing colonial history
Dubbed Little England, Nuwara Eliya is a sleepy town in the tea country hills of central Sri Lanka. Full of colonial-era buildings and bungalows, Tudor-style hotels and well-manicured hedges and gardens, Nuwara Eliya gives the impression of a town from a bygone era and though small, it offers plenty to see and do . You can drop by the massive Gregory Lake for water activities and a lakeside barbecue, or visit Horton Plains, a beautiful grassland with rolling plains, waterfalls and the dramatic escarpment known as World’s End.
A stay in the 19th-century Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya is recommended.
An elephant get together
During the months of May to September, the retreating banks of a 1,700-year-old reservoir make for the most astonishing sight. Around 400 Asian elephants gather by the lake at Minneriya National Park to feed, socialise and frolic in the water. It is thought to be the largest gathering of this species of elephant in the world. The park has plenty more to see in the form of deer, purple-faced langur monkeys and a variety of birdlife.
The Cultural Triangle
The Cultural Triangle is a trove of ancient cities, relics and religious monuments showcasing early Sri Lankan civilisation. The triangle consists of the area between three cities – Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Visitors can find Sigiriya, an ancient rock fortress, the cave temples of Dambulla and Mihintale, which is the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. There are also lesser-known but culturally important attractions such as Yapahuwa, a medieval citadel which was briefly the capital of Sri Lanka in the 13th century.
There are a range of places to stay in the Cultural Triangle, from boutique hotels in Kandy to hotels in Dambulla .

Tourism in Sri Lanka
Tourism in Sri Lanka is big business. But why is tourism so important here and how should it be managed? Read on to find out…
Tourism in Sr Lanka
Sri Lanka, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” boasts a compelling mix of ancient temples, pristine beaches, and verdant landscapes. From the sacred city of Anuradhapura to the coastal allure of Galle, the island presents a myriad of travel experiences. In this article, I will delve into the diverse attractions of Sri Lanka, offering a succinct guide to its rich touristic offerings.
Geography of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, south of India. It has a total land area of approximately 65,610 square kilometres (25,332 square miles), making it the 25th largest country in Asia. Sri Lanka is also known as the “Teardrop of India” due to its distinctive shape. The island is roughly pear-shaped and is about 435 kilometres (270 miles) from north to south and 225 kilometres (140 miles) from east to west at its widest point. It is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar to the northwest and the Bay of Bengal to the northeast.
The terrain of Sri Lanka is mostly low, flat to rolling plains, with mountains in the central region. The highest peak in the country is Pidurutalagala, which stands at 2,524 metres (8,281 feet) above sea level. The central highlands of Sri Lanka are home to a number of important river systems, including the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Kalu rivers, which provide irrigation and power to the country.
Sri Lanka also has a coastline that stretches for approximately 1,340 kilometres (832 miles), with sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. The island’s climate is tropical and influenced by two monsoon seasons: the northeast monsoon from December to March, and the southwest monsoon from May to September.
The country is divided into nine provinces, which are further subdivided into 25 districts. Each province has a unique culture, and the country as a whole is known for its rich history, diverse wildlife, and vibrant cuisine.
The tourism industry in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination, known for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and wildlife. The tourism industry in Sri Lanka has been growing rapidly in recent years, and it is now one of the major contributors to the country’s economy. Tourists are attracted to Sri Lanka’s beaches, national parks, ancient cities, and cultural sites. Some of the most popular tourist destinations include the ancient city of Anuradhapura, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, the beaches of Mirissa and Unawatuna, and the Yala and Udawalawe national parks, which are home to elephants, leopards, and other wildlife.
In addition to these attractions, Sri Lanka is also known for its tea plantations, which offer scenic views and opportunities to learn about tea production. The country’s cuisine, which is influenced by Indian, Malay, and Dutch flavours, is also a draw for many tourists.
The tourism industry in Sri Lanka is supported by a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to budget guesthouses. The government has also invested in infrastructure, including the expansion of the country’s international airport and the development of new highways and railways.
However, the tourism industry in Sri Lanka was hit hard by the Easter Sunday bombings in 2019, which killed over 250 people. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a significant impact on the industry, with international travel restrictions and lockdowns leading to a sharp decline in tourist arrivals. Despite these challenges, the Sri Lankan government and tourism industry are working to rebuild and promote the country as a safe and attractive destination for travellers.

Locals play cricket on one of Sri Lanka's southern beaches, a part of this island nation that has been recovering well from the devastating 2004 tsunami and shows promise as a sustainable-tourism destination.
Sri Lanka: South Coast
99 Coastal Destinations Rated
(Score: 59) Emerging in 2009 from more than 25 years of civil war and still rebuilding from the deadly 2004 tsunami, the tropical island nation of Sri Lanka acutely needs to heal its ethnic divisions and revive its economy. Tourism figures prominently in plans to achieve both goals, including leveraging the assets of the strife-free south coast: beaches, colonial cities, temples, and wildlife. “I believe war-ravaged Sri Lanka, with help from people elsewhere, can use tourism to realize the promise of a peace dividend,” says sustainable-tourism expert Lelei LeLaulu. Elizabeth Becker, a former New York Times correspondent who is writing a book about global tourism, sees Guatemala—where opposing factions collaborated on tourism projects to revive their war-torn land—as a model for Sri Lanka. “The best way to get past the war is to give everyone jobs,” adds LeLaulu, “to ensure that the social benefits of tourism are spread around.” Typical sun-sea-sand package tourism made incursions in Sri Lanka before the civil war flared in 1983 but never took hold in the south. Becker notes that the civil war and the devastating 2004 tsunami have presented Sri Lanka with a prime opportunity to transform itself into one of the world’s finest coastal destinations. “War shielded the island from the worst excesses of industrial tourism,” she says. “It’s one of the last great unexploited regions.” This may apply in particular to the south coast, which was spared much of the conflict. Her concern, looking ahead: “Will a few well-placed people make a lot of money—or will there be a community-focused model, where many people benefit from the prosperity?” Long stretches of the palm-fringed, gold-sand coastline are in foreign hands, with uncertain implications for sustainability. Most accommodations are guesthouses, only some of which are sensitive to ecotourism concerns. Many guesthouse owners at Unawatuna beach, for example, rebuilt just feet from the tide line after the tsunami—despite the demonstrated perils of building close to the water. At Mirissa Beach, in contrast, development blends with the environment. Oil exploration along the coast raises worries, as do the effects of a new international port and new airport at Hambantota—although LeLaulu reports every effort has been taken to make the airport ecologically friendly. The lagoons of Bundala National Park and the savannas of Yala National Park, both near the coast, elicit praise for their conservation management. Yala remains one of the best places in the world to watch leopards stalk through underbrush and Asian elephants graze in grasslands. The region’s cuisine—“an alluring fusion of Southeast Asian and South Indian,” LeLaulu says—is another attraction. The countryside is dotted with stupas and other religious shrines, both Buddhist and Hindu, which provide hopeful symbols for a rapprochement between the brawling Sinhalese and Tamils. “These days you can go to a Hindu temple,” LeLaulu reports, “and find Buddhist priests looking around.” Then there’s the fortress city of Galle, which the Dutch developed in 1663 after seizing this strategic ocean outlook from the Portuguese. Celebrated for its blend of European architectural styles and South Asian traditions, this World Heritage site draws visitors to wander its web of narrow streets and enjoy its open-air cafés—but many buildings need substantial renovations. “Sri Lankans need to knuckle down and do some real planning for sustainable tourism,” concludes LeLaulu. “The potential benefit for them, their environment and economy, and for world travelers, is enormous.”

Sri Lanka’s Development as a Tourist Attraction Site Report
Introduction, key stages of development, gantt chart, swot analysis, pest analysis, an innovative tourism and hospitality project.
Sustainably developed tourism has become one of the primary concerns of each country as more people are willing to go to places with better ecology, infrastructure and attractions. Generally, the tourism industry demands that all the spheres of human activities interact in order to attract new visitors to the area. One of such destination is Sri Lanka, which is a beautiful tropical island in the Indian Ocean and has been quite a popular destination for tourists from all over the world due to its breathtaking location and uniqueness.
It has an enormous amount of cultural and heritage-based resources. Moreover, the state is enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The country is rich in natural and cultural resources. It took Sri Lanka 18 years to recognise the need for developing tourism as a driver of its economy. However, recent statistics show that more people prefer other countries for recreation. The purpose of this group project is to investigate the economic factors that can influence the development of Sri Lanka as a tourist attraction site.
The direction of sustainable tourism has become the goal of each tourism-oriented country. The following are the features of tourism sustainability:
- Optimal usage of environmental resources, biodiversity is preserved and ecosystems function together.
- Socio-cultural authenticity is respected, cultural heritage is conserved and well-treated and cross-cultural borders are honoured.
- Economic benefits are equally distributed between all the stakeholders, the level of employment is stable, and opportunities for income growth are available.
- Poverty and social alienation are eliminated from society (Rasoolimanesh and Jaafar, 2016).
To plan the stages of tourism development, it would be logical to stick to Gantt’s chart, which will help to establish the objectives and deadlines.
- Any project has as a first step setting objectives, both short and long-term. The main aim of this program is to promote sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka. Achieving these objectives demands understanding the context of the country, that is, its location, economic, ecological and social factors influencing the state (Higgins-Desbiolles, 2018). Sri Lanka can focus on preserving heritage sites to develop new and sustain existing tourism. One of the UNESCO heritage sites in Sri Lanka is the Sacred City of Kandy, which maintains a tooth of a Buddha. This site must be highly protected to preserve its sacredness to be visited by tourists.
- The next step is to identify the stakeholders and develop working relations with them. Among the stakeholders can be Indigenous people, visitors, different communities, cultural heritage agencies and other groups. Developing partnerships with trustworthy agents can have a positive impact on travellers who come to the island. Sri Lanka is inhabited by the indigenous tribe Vedda who is the earliest citizen of the island. This tribe may have a vested interest in developing tourism sustainability as they may contribute their uniqueness to it. Moreover, heritage agencies will assist Sri Lanka to establish itself as a centre of ancient but well-preserved sights.
- The appraisal of tourist demand and supply is another stage. Any tourism starts with attractions and people choose countries to travel to due to the popularity of sights it has. An attraction represents an object, person, or place, that attracts people geographically or through remote electronic means so that they can experience it. Therefore, it will be necessary to single out the most popular attractions and create potentially successful and unique ones that will shape Sri Lanka’s image. This step would take several years as erecting new sites is time and finance-consuming.
- At the stage of assessing, it is crucial to identify issues and perspectives that might affect the future of tourism. For example, the indigenous group of stakeholders might demand more time to train as tourist guides (Amerta, Sara and Bagiada, 2018). Moreover, they may ask for more investment in community maintenance. This step also includes financial planning, which will assess the gains and losses from cooperation with stakeholders.
- The stage of analysis will measure the SWOT indicators. The study will assess whether Sri Lanka has popular tourist destinations, consider the opportunities available for their promotion, evaluate the factors affecting the difficulty of tourist management, and identify threats to the heritage values. Furthermore, the stage implies measuring the level of urgency and the importance of things to be done.
- Further steps of development will include creating a logical plan of action, considering factors that may influence achieving goals. The last stage is to approve a program, principles, guidelines to complete the set objectives and make sure all the key points are in the plan. The entire plan will take several years as every element should be measured carefully.
SWOT analysis is a tool which can be effective in measuring internal and external factors that affect and support the decision-making process.
- Country’s climate and weather;
- Rich natural resources;
- Tourism economic potential;
- External investment attraction;
- Tourism can bring vitality to the region’s economy.
- Insufficient tourism management;
- Slow economy;
- Lack of amenities for tourists;
- Surrounding countries with better touristic potential;
- Lack of advertisements.
Opportunities
- Developing tourism facilities as a part of sustainable development;
- Creating jobs for locals;
- Cultural exchange;
- Preserving heritage sites and natural resources as a strategy for developing ecotourism.
- Damaging natural resources due to the emergence of new infrastructure;
- Tourism customer fatigue;
- Little foreign investment;
- Building a new tourism system may impact social structure of the locals.
Political Factors
The political environment may affect tourism in many ways: terrorism, wars, or armed conflicts. Sri Lankan government actively participates in building new constructions such as roads, bridges. Moreover, Sri Lanka should establish relationships with some foreign countries that can influence the tourism industry.
Economic Factors
Sri Lankan economy does not work effectively now as it suffers from unemployment, high taxes and high level of interest rates. These factors affect the sector of tourism.
Socio-Cultural Factors
Tourists love to visit Sri Lanka because of its authentic values, food, traditions. The strategy of offering traditional food at the hotels and restaurants may significantly attract tourists to the area. Sri Lankan art is another attraction that depicts the religious beliefs of the locals.
Technological Factors
These factors are crucial in popularizing tourists in any country. Globalization highly influences all spheres of life. Therefore, in order to improve the sector of tourism, Sri Lanka must install technologies that will allow reaching the customer without using foreign media.
To develop the tourism sector, Sri Lanka should initiate a hospitality program that will presuppose offering hospitality services. These services may include offering local lodging, recreation activities, promoting countries’ arts and culture. As it was mentioned, Shi Lanka owns valuable lands preserved in UNESCO. Therefore, as a part of environmental development, the island needs to maintain as many wild animals, plants, parks and wilderness in general as to establish sustainable tourism (Amerta, Sara and Bagiada, 2018). Typically, people who explore hot countries tend to choose remote areas to relax to enclose with nature and its resources. Therefore, Sri Lanka’s goal is to focus on maintaining its heritage sites and wildlife to attract tourists.
For instance, Sri Lanka owns 22 national parks, most of which are the most impressive in Asia. Thus, the state’s goal is to ensure these national parks are preserved and nurtured to provide picturesque adventures for tourists. Moreover, these parks must be ecologically maintained, which means that the government must ensure there is no negative impact on the environment, such as smoking, littering and other activities that may harm (Rasoolimanesh and Jaafar, 2016).
Another crucial point concerning the ecological side of sustainable tourism is to ensure Sri Lanka’s resources are limited to the customer’s use. It meant that there should be ecological limits that everyone should be aware of to preserve the island’s nature. Natural resources promote visitor experiences that include close contact with wildlife and an undeveloped natural environment. As a result, keeping wild Sri Lanka’s nature will attract many tourists as they will be curious to explore such sites.
Socio-cultural development can be established as well. The socio-cultural factors affected by tourist activities are the most complicated ones to measure and quantify. This factor differs from environmental and economic due to its subjectivity. However, tourism can potentially promote social development by creating workplaces, income redistribution and poverty elimination. Travelling is also an educational activity as it brings visitors and locals together.
Hosts and travelers exchange cultures, traditions, languages and other values. Moreover, cultural understanding is a cornerstone of sustainable tourism. In addition to this, the socio-cultural components also include conservation and transmission of cultural and historical peculiarities of a country. Therefore, Sri Lanka needs to promote its traditions, especially the cultures of the indigenous peoples such as Veddas or Sinhalese. Such promotion will result in the propagation of local heritage, arts, music and other values.
One of the ways to make Sri Lanka the world’s leading attraction is to initiate innovations in tourism. Innovative tourism has become a trendy direction which develops countries so that they are visited year after year. One of the most significant improvements that may put Sri Lanka to the list of the most visited places concerns the technical part (Mihalic, 2016). Among the most successful innovations is the creation of online rental platforms where people can rent apartments, hotels, or condos that would suit their wants. Furthermore, such apps would help to develop more or less stable price orientation and it would be easy to read and receive feedback.
Interactivity on such platforms is a key to tourism development as it allows both sides to participate in discussions concerning recreational activities (Boley, McGehee and Hammet, 2017) Therefore, there will be an opportunity of having everything at your fingertips without thinking about time, space and more payment alternatives. Moreover, the projects aimed to develop hospitality can be created to sustain Shi Lanka’s tourism.
Furthermore, the Sri Lankan websites can be optimized for mobile use. Mobile phones are the necessities now, so each tourist is likely to find or book a place where they want to stay or eat out; thus, the tourists will navigate around the hotel or restaurant websites faster (Budeanu et al ., 2016). In general, Sri Lanka must promote itself through social media so that the people will be fascinated by the views and experiences.
In conclusion, it is relevant to state that achieving sustainable development of tourism aims to meet people’s needs while preserving nature. By creating a sustainable system of tourism, Sri Lanka will benefit, as people would want to visit its heritage site due to its uniqueness. For the most part, tourism will develop in an ecological direction and will attract people from all over the world. Moreover, by strengthening the economic and socio-cultural components, local people will be employed and their cultural values will be shared.

Sri Lanka Tourism targets 4 m visitors, $ 8.5 b revenue by 2030 under new strategy

- Aims to increase daily tourist spending from $ 169 to $ 250 and double sector’s workforce by 2030

- Insists on addressing overcrowding at tourism hotspots to preserve natural and cultural heritage
- Calls for innovation in tourism through R&D, consistent and long-term destination marketing strategy
- Highlights Sri Lanka’s potential to develop MICE tourism market
By Charumini de Silva The newly appointed leadership of Sri Lanka Tourism has set ambitious targets to boost the industry, aiming to attract 4 million tourists and generate $ 8.5 billion in revenue over the next five years. Speaking at the World Tourism Day 2024 celebration event held at the Cinnamon Grand yesterday, Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) and the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) Chairman Dheera Hettiarachchi outlined the new vision, a strategic shift from the previous regime’s focus in sheer visitor numbers, to increase the quality of the tourism experience while strengthening the sector’s long-term sustainability. This was also the first public address by the new leadership since assuming office. Outlining the administration’s new vision which includes increasing the daily spending by tourists from the present $ 169 to $ 250 by 2030, while also doubling the human capital involved in the sector, reflecting broader focus on both quality and employment within the industry. This marks a significant departure from the previous regime’s strategy, which had set a target of five million visitors by 2030 and emphasised attracting high-end tourists, aiming to generate $ 4,000 per visitor and encouraging half of these tourists to spend over $ 500 per day. The current approach, Hettiarachchi explained, places greater emphasis on uniqueness and authenticity rather than focusing solely on volumes or high-end travellers. “Our new national tourism policy is based on five key pillars – visionary leadership and strategic governance, sustainable utilisation of natural and cultural heritage, human capital development, innovative tourism products and strategic destination marketing,” he said. These pillars, Hettiarachchi said were formulated with input from both local and international experts, underscoring the administration’s commitment to building a globally competitive and sustainable tourism sector. He also highlighted the overcrowding at key tourist destinations, such as Sigiriya and Yala, as an issue that needs to be addressed in the interest of sustainability. “If we aim to drive tourism growth, it is critical that we preserve these assets for future generations.” he said, noting that it aligns with the administration’s broader focus on managing the carrying capacity of the country’s natural and cultural heritage sites. To better carter to the growing demand for authentic and unique experiences, Hettiarachchi called for innovation within the sector, whilst urging the local universities with tourism-related degrees to contribute through research and development (R&D0, an area he said has been largely neglected for the past 58 years. “Globetrotters today are well informed and increasingly seek authentic experiences. Our ability to meet those expectations will determine our success as a destination.” he said. Beyond, traditional leisure tourism, Hettiarachchi also pointed to the substantial potential for Sri Lanka to develop as a MICE destination.

Uk high commission hopeful sri lanka will tackle terrorism threat soon.
25 Oct 2024 - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}
The British High Commission in Sri Lanka expressed confidence that Sri Lankan authorities will soon address the terrorism threat, while reaffirming its support to the government.
“This is a very serious situation, and authorities are working on it. We fully support the government in addressing this issue,” British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Andrew Patrick told Mirror Business on Wednesday evening.
The UK Foreign Office updated its travel advisory for Sri Lanka following a warning issued by the United States, cautioning UK citizens about the elevated risk of terrorist attacks.
“There is a heightened terrorist threat in Sri Lanka. Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals such as hotels, tourist sites, and places of worship,” the advisory stated.
Patrick acknowledged that some within Sri Lanka’s tourism sector believe the situation might have been exaggerated to negatively impact the industry. The UK is Sri Lanka’s secondlargest tourism source market, with 143,007 UK nationals arriving in the country as of October 20.
The UK Foreign Office is expected to revise the advisory once the threat has been addressed, though it remains unclear if the update will be fully lifted or partially maintained.
Patrick noted that travel advisories cautioning against possible terrorist attacks are common in several countries popular among British tourists. “Many countries have warnings with similar language about likely terrorist attacks, including destinations like Spain and Thailand. Most places where British tourists go carry similar levels of warnings,” he said.
The UK had maintained a travel advisory on Sri Lanka until April this year, following the economic crisis and social unrest of 2022. However, British tourist arrivals have continued to rise despite the warnings. (NF)
