sri lanka tourist attraction essay

With forested mountains, sand-dusted beaches and a rich history spanning centuries of maritime trade, Sri Lanka offers travelers a wondrous mix of experiences. Even on a short trip, you can fit in days of beach basking, spectacular surfing, close encounters with elephants and leopards, tea plantation tours, and trips to some of Asia's most remarkable shrines and ancient ruins, alongside meals to remember.

Measuring just 240km (150 miles) across at its widest point, Sri Lanka fits a lot into a small space. Traveling by train , bus or hired car, you can roam from coast to coast in a day, but with so many charming places to visit, it can be hard to decide where to start your island adventure.

You might want to spend all your time on idyllic beaches or plot an itinerary around Buddhist stupas or wildlife-filled national parks. Or you could plan a trip involving all of the above! Whatever your budget , here’s our pick of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka to get you started.

Best for food and big city vibes

No Sri Lanka itinerary would be complete without a trip to Colombo , the country’s culturally diverse capital city. Providing an easy introduction to the Sri Lankan way of life, Colombo is centered on the cosmopolitan Fort district, dotted with landmark buildings from the colonial era, including the terracotta-roofed Dutch Hospital , founded in the 1600s. The Fort District also has some excellent places to eat.

Be sure to spend some time at Galle Face Green , Colombo's main seaside promenade, where hundreds of families gather to munch on local snacks and dip their toes in the sea at sunset. Order yourself some isso vade – deep-fried prawn and lentil fritters, topped with spicy sambol (coconut and chili chutney) – and settle in for some people-watching.

Planning tip: While Colombo is a safe and walkable city, tuk-tuks are inexpensive and convenient for getting around. Always check that your tuk-tuk has a working meter before you get in to ensure you pay the correct fare for your ride.

Visitors walk through gardens to the rocky ruins of Sigiriya, Sri Lanka.

2. Sigiriya

Best for history buffs and art aficionados

With ornate ponds, royal sleeping chambers and a majestic set of carved lion paws marking the start of its steep steps, the colossal, ruin-topped outcrop of Sigiriya is Sri Lanka’s most recognizable site, peeking out over the thick jungle canopy and offering a tantalizing glimpse of the ancient kingdom of Kassapa.

Frescoes featuring women adorned in jewelry with flowers in their hair are the site's most famous feature, but the views from the top of the rock are unparalleled. A calm hush awaits at the terraced summit, which covers 1.6 hectares (4 acres).

Planning tip: Try to visit early in the day, at around 7am; the cooler morning air makes it much more pleasant to walk up the 1200 steps to the top. Head back down by noon, before the rock's surface gets too hot, stay hydrated and wear soft shoes with good tread.

A girl looks at the ruins of the Abhayagiri stupa at Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

3. Anuradhapura

Best for Buddhist history

Anuradhapura looks like any other middle-sized Sri Lankan town when you first arrive. There's a clock tower, a single train station and small shops clustered along a busy main road. But Anuradhapura's simple facade conceals the enormous scale of its heritage; on the outskirts of town are the ruins of one of ancient Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist sites.

The most sacred spot in this complex of ruined temples, towering dagobas (stupas) and palaces is the revered Sri Maha Bodhi tree, believed to have been grown from a cutting taken from the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodhgaya , India. Scattered through the surrounding jungles and villages are all sorts of archaeological wonders.

Planning tip: Comfortable shoes are a must for walking between the stupas and temples. Even in ruins, Anuradhapura's Buddhist shrines are places of worship, and footwear must be removed before entering. Carrying a scarf to cover your legs and shoulders is always a good idea.

Monumental Buddha statues viewed through the leaves at the Gal Vihara temple complex, Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka.

4. Polonnaruwa

Best for ancient architecture

Often visited on an ancient cities circuit that includes Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is famed for its ancient ruins, carved temples and rich Buddhist heritage.

As you gaze upon the 14m (46ft) reclining Buddha inside the Gal Viharaya , you can’t help but imagine the effort that went into creating these graceful figures. The white, grey and black granite softens the details of these intricate carvings, and the scent of fresh flowers and incense, offered to the statues by devotees, floats through the air.

Don’t miss the other archaeological sites in the area, including the closely grouped temples and stupas comprising the Royal Ruins , which can be explored on a rewarding day of sightseeing.

Planning tip: If you're traveling north from Colombo towards Jaffna, both Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are great places to stay and break up the journey.

Rice and curry – Sri Lankan national dish – served at a restaurant in Jaffna.

Best for a taste of Tamil culture

A trip to Jaffna in the far north of Sri Lanka offers a relaxed change from the rest of the country, and there's loads to see, from historic Jaffna Fort  to the gleaming brasswork and staggering murals of the architecturally marvelous Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil Hindu temple. Here you can immerse yourself in the culture and heritage of Sri Lanka’s largest ethnic minority: the Tamil people.

Once caught up in conflict and colonial occupation, Jaffna has been revitalized by the return of peace, with excellent, up-and-coming restaurants serving the region's spicy, Indian-influenced cuisine. Several islands off the coast of Jaffna are accessible by road or ferry. Kayts – a hauntingly beautiful, quiet island of fishing communities – and Delft, with its wild ponies descended from horses abandoned by Dutch colonists, are both well worth a visit.

Planning tip: The Tamil culture of Jaffna differs from the rest of the island. Be mindful of local customs, such as removing footwear when entering sites such as the Jaffna Public Library , where going barefoot is a sign of respect for the knowledge within the building.

A scenic aerial shot of a mostly empty beach with palm trees, golden sand and gentle turquoise waves, two couples walking by the water and a small boat on the sand in the foreground

6. Trincomalee

Best for an unspoiled beach vacation

At Trincomalee, stretches of powdery soft sand and calm waters meld with dramatic cliffside Hindu temples – among them the famous Kandasamy Kovil , with its richly ornamental architecture and monumental statue of Shiva looking out to sea. Here, you'll see a side to Sri Lanka that remains off the radar for most visitors.

The long beaches here are disturbed only by the occasional bit of driftwood or coconut husk washing ashore, and the shallow waters are ripe for snorkeling, with miles of coral reefs and thriving marine life.

Planning tip: Public beaches here do not have lifeguards; take extra care when swimming and go snorkeling with a guide.

Buddha statues and colorful religious art in the dimly lit caves at Dambulla

7. Dambulla

Best for a mini-pilgrimage

An important stop on the country’s ancient pilgrim trail, set in a quiet jungle zone frequented by the native toque macaque monkeys, Rangiri Cave Temple in Dambulla is one of the most visited places in Sri Lanka.

Troops of monkeys will accompany you on the walk up to the temple, inside which you'll find five caves containing 150 well-preserved statues of the Buddha alongside brightly painted religious carvings, sculpted into the rock surface.

Planning tip: Wear white or pale colors as a mark of respect, and expect crowds on Poya days – special days marking the full moon in the Buddhist calendar. While toque macaques are delightful to watch, they are wild so don't get too close!

A group of elephants grazing at Minneriya National Park, Sri Lanka.

8. Minneriya National Park

Best for wildlife lovers

Vast herds of wild elephants graze across nearly 9000 hectares (22,240 acres) of forests and grassland in Minneriya National Park, centered on scenic Minneriya Lake. Watch in awe with cameras at the ready as long trunks are extended to draw up water and elephant calves roll around on the banks in the wet mud.

Once a year, during the dry season, the park's 300 or so elephants gather around the banks of the lake to graze in a marvelous natural event known as "the Gathering" – the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world.

Planning tip: April to October is the time to witness the Gathering. Prebooking your safari and sharing a jeep with others will help to reduce the number of vehicles entering the park during this busy period.

A view over the lake in Kandy, Sri Lanka, with temples in the foreground.

Best for a taste of the Hill Country

For a culture-filled trip from Colombo, take the train from Fort Railway Station to the heritage town of Kandy. It's a must for any rail enthusiast – the railway lines curve and wind around mountains to connect rural towns, and wide windows frame views of deep ravines and hillsides densely covered in emerald-green forest.

The legendary Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – containing a tooth said to come from the historical Buddha – and Kandy Lake are must-see attractions for anyone visiting Sri Lanka. Both are easily reached from the station by tuk-tuk.

Planning tip: Visitors are required to cover their arms, legs and shoulders when visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, so wear long sleeves or bring a scarf or sarong. From Kandy, you can continue by train to Ella and other tea-growing towns in the hills.

A mugger crocodile with its jaws wide open in green marshland at Kumana National Park in Sri Lanka

10. Kumana National Park

Best for birding

The 200-hectare (494-acre) Kumana National Park is a birder’s dream, home to throngs of vibrant kingfishers and jungle fowl alongside 255 other species of endemic and migrating birds, which find sanctuary in the park's mangrove swamps and lagoons.

Expect to spot falcons and eagles as they soar overhead, and peacocks shimmying on the ground. Also frequently spotted here are cleverly camouflaged crocodiles, lying in wait on the sandy banks of the lake for chance encounters with buffaloes.

Cap off your trip here with a visit to the coastal village of Panama, which many visitors bypass in favor of bigger towns, such as Pottuvil and Arugam Bay. Here you'll find a tiny monastery under a rock, thatched-roof homes and dirt tracks leading through paddy fields to hidden beaches.

Planning tip: Kumana National Park is accessed through the village of Okanda; prearranging a guided jeep safari is the best way to enjoy the park.

Hikes on the trail to the top of Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) in Sri Lanka at sunrise.

11. Adam’s Peak

Best for hikers

Sri Lanka’s holiest peak is considered sacred by all religions on the island. Muslims and Christians call the mountain Adam’s Peak in tribute to a footprint reputedly left in the stone by the Prophet Adam. Buddhists believe the footprint was made by the Buddha, while Hindus attribute the print to Hanuman or Shiva. The peak is also known as Sri Pada ("Sacred Footprint") or Samanala Kanda ("The Mountain of the Butterflies" – also a reference to the local deity Saman).

Join thousands of pilgrims dressed in white in the early hours of the morning to hike slowly and quietly to the temple at the top . Humble teahouses, resting places and shrines dot the landscape as you ascend, and pilgrims greet each other offering blessings for a good climb. The hike to the top takes three to four hours, depending on which trail you choose; aim to reach the summit at dawn to catch the first rays of sunrise wrapping around the mountain.

Planning tip: The hike to the summit of Adam's Peak at 2243m (7359ft) is moderate and there are plenty of places to rest. Ascending via the town of Hatton and descending via Ratnapura is the shortest route.

The full moon days in December and May mark the beginning and end of the climbing season. During this period, set off earlier to sidestep the crowds, or expect slow and packed trails. Climbing in the off-season is not recommended, as it coincides with the southeastern monsoon.

12. Kalpitiya

Best for kitesurfers

Despite attracting thrill-seekers from around the world, Kalpitiya retains its quaint coastal charm, though the Dutch-era fort near the end of the peninsula is occupied by the Sri Lankan navy. Cows, goats and donkeys stroll beside the road and villages buzz with local life, but the big lure for visitors is the world-class kitesurfing on offer in the Kalpitiya Lagoon.

Thatched-roof beach huts with outdoor showers offer a pleasing surf-shack vibe, and most mornings you’ll wake to a crowing rooster. Kitesurfing centers are dotted around the lagoon, and there's more impressive kitesurfing 30km (19 miles) north off the narrow sandbar known as Vella Island.

Planning tip: The weather for kitesurfing is ideal between October to May, and there are numerous kitesurfing schools around Kalpitiya where you can hone your skills.

A group of surfers climb down Elephant Rock towards the beach for a surfing session in Sri Lanka.

13. Arugam Bay

Best for catching a wave

For aspiring surfers, there are few spots on the island more idyllic than Arugam Bay . With a famous point break and plenty of waves that are easy for newbie surfers to conquer, this is a great spot to step off the conveyor belt of life and devote some quality time to sun, sand and surf.

Surf schools abound, and there are numerous, laid-back places to stay, eat and grab a drink in front of the view. It's easy to lose track of time here, but you're close to national parks and the atmospheric tea-growing towns of the Hill Country.

Planning tip: The best months to surf Sri Lanka's east coast are from April to October. Main Point is a consistent intermediate break, while Baby Point is a good choice for new surfers.

sri lanka tourist attraction essay

Sri Lanka’s rich culture and history, gorgeous landscape and scenery, and plentiful wildlife-spotting opportunities are the main reasons the country tops many travelers’ bucket lists. And due to its relatively small size, many of the best attractions and destinations are within only a couple of hours of each other. In one day, if you’re on a tight schedule, you could spend the morning at one of the country’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, go on a safari in the afternoon, and then in the evening, relax and enjoy a cup of tea from one of the hill country plantations. Or, with more time, allow the opportunity for spontaneous exploration—road tripping throughout the country offers scenic views almost everywhere, and you might pull over for an elephant sighting or two along the way!

 Jamie Hergenrader

Kandy, a major city in Sri Lanka’s hill country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and one corner of the country’s Cultural Triangle. It’s surrounded by mountains of rainforest and tea plantations and is home to a beautiful lake within the city. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred temple that houses Buddha’s tooth; wander the city’s colorful streets, and admire the architecture while sampling food from the many street vendors; walk around the lake for scenic views of the lake itself and also the colorful buildings that dot the hillsides around it; and make the quick drive outside of the city to the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens to visit its orchid house and its spice garden, the latter of which will take you on an olfactory tour of the country’s native spices.

This massive rock formation is not only a breathtaking sight to take in as you approach, jutting up from the flat lands that surround it but also a place of cultural and historical significance. The UNESCO World Heritage site was a fort and palace that dates back to the fifth century. A network of winding staircases and paths will lead you to the top of the rock if you’re game to do the 1,217-step climb. Along the way, you’ll get panoramic views of the valley around you, you’ll pass ancient paintings by monks on the rock walls, and learn about the kingdom that once called this rock home. If you plan on making the entire climb (which we highly recommend), arrive at the park at opening time—you’ll avoid the afternoon heat and beat most of the crowds.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, one of the three corners of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the current capital city of the North Central Province, was the first ancient capital in Sri Lanka, thriving for more than 1,300 years until it was abandoned in 993. Tourists visit this UNESCO World Heritage site to explore the well-preserved ruins and significant Buddhist history. Several dagobas, distinctive dome-shaped memorials, remain in the city, one of which is said to house Buddha’s collarbone. Another important site is the Bodhi tree found in the Mahamewna Gardens —it’s the oldest known human-planted tree in the world, and it grew from the southern branch of a sacred fig tree in India, the tree under which Gautama Buddha was said to have gained enlightenment.

Polonnaruwa

Jamie Hergenrader

The third corner of the Cultural Triangle , Polonnaruwa became the second capital after Anuradhapura was abandoned. Like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is a draw for visitors interested in touring the city’s history and ruins, including those of the royal palace and other royal spaces, the quadrangle (a raised, walled-off area of monuments and Buddha statues), and dagobas. You’ll undoubtedly spot many monkeys (toque macaques) in the area, and that population of native, endangered monkeys was featured in Disney’s nature documentary, “Monkey Kingdom.”

Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located along the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is the most visited national park in the country, primarily because of the chance to spot the leopards in the area—it is home to one of the largest concentrations of leopards in the world. (The land became a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and then a national park in 1938.) Although it comprises five blocks, only two of them are open to the public for safari to preserve and protect the majority of the land. Between February and July is the best time to visit; during these months, the lower water levels bring more animals out in the open searching for water. However, the park can get crowded in these peak months, and higher traffic through the park can lessen your chances of spotting one of the elusive leopards. Even so, you’ll still have the opportunity to see elephants, crocodiles, and water buffaloes.

Minneriya National Park

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Sri Lanka has plenty of safari opportunities, but Minneriya National Park is known for having the world's largest gatherings of Asian elephants. Previously an elephant sanctuary, the land was converted to a national park in 1997, and Asian elephants still freely roam the grounds in large herds. While you'll likely get a glimpse of several whenever you visit, the dry season from June to September is the best time to visit. This is when the elephants (sometimes as many as 300) will congregate around the reservoir. It might be most famous for these elephant sightings, but the park is also home to more than 170 species of birds, leopards, monkeys, and other wildlife.

Many tourists skip Colombo to set off for the country’s beautiful nature destinations, but the capital city deserves some of your time . Colombo comprises several distinct neighborhoods that showcase the old and new—from ancient temples and colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and city parks. It’s easy (and recommended) to wander and simply take in the sights as you go. One impressive architectural sight you won’t be able to miss is the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid (also known as the Red Mosque), a red and white mosque in Colombo’s Pettah neighborhood. Admiring it from the outside is intriguing enough, but if you want to go inside, ensure you’ve dressed appropriately; women need to cover their hair, arms, and legs.

This fortified old city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is another of the country’s impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of the best things to do is walk along the fort’s ramparts that give you a view out to the water and inward toward the fort and city. You can also take a self-guided tour of the fort to learn about its history and architecture. Although the fort is the main attraction for visitors to the area, Galle is a prime destination for shopping as well; wander the pedestrian-friendly streets to check out the many art galleries, upscale markets, and boutique stores selling clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, and home goods.

Nuwara Eliya

Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest exports, so a trip to the rolling hills of tea country is well worth your time. Nuwara Eliya boasts hundreds of acres of tea plantations and several tea production facilities you can visit to learn about the entire tea-making process, from planting to picking and steeping at home. Once you’ve had your fill of tea, be sure to explore the other gorgeous surroundings of Nuwara Eliya, such as the manicured and well-maintained Victoria Park, Lake Gregory for a day on the water, or a lakeside picnic, or the beautiful, 350-foot tall Ramboda Falls.

As one of the main beach destinations in the country, Mirissa attracts those looking for a laid-back, leisurely vacation of days lounging on the sand and nights out on the town. Among the gorgeous beaches in Mirissa, Mirissa Beach and Secret Beach are two of the best for their beauty and seclusion, but neither one gets too crowded. If you’d rather be out on the water, Mirissa is a surfer’s paradise, especially from October to April, and it’s also a popular destination for whale watching tours to spot blue whales. After a day in the sun, hit some of the casual but lively restaurants and bars, some of which are right along the beach, making them a perfect setting for a sunset cocktail.

Whether it be en-route to a perfect surf break, visiting a historical site or on a pilgrimage, lush greenery and exotic animals are never far away.

15. Nine Arch Bridge [SEE MAP]

Nine Arch Bridge

One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights is the Nine Arch Bridge in the small mountain town of Ella . This viewpoint offers spectacular panoramas of the surrounding area, which is made up of verdant greenery and tea fields.

Visitors can watch trains roll over the bridge as they make their way along the Demodara Loop. Constructed in the early days of the railway expansion in Sri Lanka, the bridge is particularly impressive because it is made of cement, stone and brick, without the use of any steel.

14. Mihintale [SEE MAP]

Mihintale

Mihintale is a mountain near the town of Anuradhapura. Its summit has much spiritual significance to the Buddhist community. It’s believed that on this mountain top a Buddhist monk named Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa and together this meeting introduced Buddhism to the country.

Monk Mahinda impressed the King with the peacefulness of the Buddhist doctrine and his contented, serene nature. The King subsequently renounced war, and went on to spread peace throughout the nation. There are several impressive religious and historical structures on and around Mihintale Mountain. Hundreds of pilgrims visit the site each year.

13. Unawatuna [SEE MAP]

Unawatuna

This white sand beach in the small seaside town of Unawatuna is a great place to relax. There are a number of snorkeling and diving operators in town who take advantage of the abundance of coral reefs just off the beach.

Colorful fish and plentiful turtles are the norm in these waters. There are a number of great dining options along the beach, which welcome visitors to use their sun loungers and relax the day away with a drink in hand.

12. Gal Viharaya [SEE MAP]

Gal Viharaya

Visitors can find Gal Viharaya in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Gal Viharaya is a famous Buddhist site and is celebrated for its many caves and large sculptures of Buddha which are carved into the rock faces. They are extremely well preserved, even though they were crafted in the 12th century.

To the side of one of the statues, a code of conduct is inscribed. The code, when followed, was meant to purify the Buddhist monks and bring them together under one order. It was created by a very famous king: King Parakramabahu the first. Today, Gal Viharaya is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular sites of pilgrimage.

11. Kataragama Festival [SEE MAP]

Kataragama Festival

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Festival takes place every year in July or August and is dedicated to one of the Hindu gods. It takes place over a two-week period and people from all over the world come to join in.

The festival is jam-packed with parades of elephants and colorfully dressed performers. There are countless traditional dances that take place; with musicians, acrobats, and fire-breathers feeding into the festival’s contagious energy.

10. Udawalawe National Park [SEE MAP]

Udawalawe National Park

There are few places in the world where elephant sightings are so frequent. However, elephants are not the only animals to see within Udawalawe National Park; peacocks, jackals, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys and deer also roam the area.

Safaris are most popular in the early morning hours when animals are at their most active. The biodiversity of the park can be attributed to its varied landscape; it is flanked by mountain ranges to the north with wetlands and rivers hugging the grasslands and forests at the base of the mountains.

9. Ravana Falls [SEE MAP]

Ravana Falls

The beautiful Ravana Falls are used for bathing in the hot summer months. In the rainy season, the water flow is exceptionally strong and is an impressive sight. The falls are part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, and the nearby cave complex is rich in local legend.

Conveniently located on the main road on the way to Ella town, the caves are a common stop off point for visitors during their journey. Many cheeky monkeys live in the surrounding trees and they are often seen on the roadside dining on fruit. However, don’t let them get too close, as sometimes they can get over-friendly with visitors.

8. Dambulla Cave Temple [SEE MAP]

Dambulla Cave Temple

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a sacred Buddhist site. There is no entry fee to get into the temple on full-moon days; however, these days are especially busy because of the religious significance of this lunar phase. Devotees from all over the world make pilgrimage to this place.

There are over 80 caves documented in the area, but the most famous five are outfitted with impressive statues and paintings. Some of the caves date back to 1000 BC, when prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived within them, so it is unsurprising that they would have created temples inside at that time. If you do plan to visit, please be aware that visitors must cover their shoulders and legs and remove shoes before entering the temple.

7. Mirissa [SEE MAP]

Mirissa

Mirissa is the ultimate Sri Lankan beach getaway. The beautiful long beach is flanked by tall overhanging palm trees and lined with modern restaurants and hotels. The restaurants have western style food at Sri Lankan prices. Just off the beach is Parrot Rock. It has a small staircase leading to the top that offers great views of the ocean and coastline.

Day trips from Mirissa include whale watching, snorkeling and surfing. Weligama, just a few kilometers from Mirissa, is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka to learn surfing. Come happy hour and into the evening, many the restaurants turn their venues into beach clubs and pump out drinks and tunes.

6. Arugam Bay [SEE MAP]

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is revered by surfers. This small town on the east coast of Sri Lanka embodies the quintessential laid-back surf lifestyle. The Main Point surf break is within walking distance from the town center, but is only recommended for advanced or intermediate surfers.

Otherwise, Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm are two great surf beaches for beginner and intermediate surfers; a short tuk-tuk ride will take you there. Often elephants and peacocks can be spotted beside the road, just outside of town. The main strip in Arugam Bay town is lined with restaurants and hotels where you can dine on anything from traditional Sri Lankan curry to full English breakfasts.

5. Temple of the Tooth [SEE MAP]

Temple of the Tooth

The Temple of the Tooth is a highly sacred place. The temple contains one of Buddha’s teeth. Legend has it that the tooth was taken from the Buddha on his deathbed, then smuggled to Sri Lanka from India. It was smuggled in the hair of a princess, after her father’s kingdom had been besieged.

It immediately became an object of great importance and has been celebrated and paraded throughout history. However, many attempts have also been made to steal or destroy the tooth. Twice daily, pujas are held to celebrate the relic and offer visitors and devotees the chance to get a glimpse of the tooth within its casing.

4. Adam's Peak [SEE MAP]

Adam's Peak

At the summit of Adam’s Peak is a footprint cast in stone. It has spiritual significance to a number of different religions, however, there is currently a Buddhist monastery at the summit. To the Buddhists, the footprint is that of Buddha’s; to Christians, the footprint is Adam’s; and to Hindus, the footprint is attributed to Shiva.

The site is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially on full moon nights. The trek to the top of the mountain to see the footprint is via a steep staircase containing over 5000 steps. The trail is lined with many tea stalls and food shops which act as places of rest. Most people begin their hike at 2:30 am to reach the summit in time for sunrise.

3. Galle Fort [SEE MAP]

Galle Fort

It is easy to get lost in the cobblestoned alleyways and streets within Galle Fort. Today the area is full of modern restaurants, hotels, clothing, and souvenir shops. Meanwhile, snake charmers and buskers line the seawall.

However, the fort was not always such a cosmopolitan spot. A basic fort was constructed by the Portuguese when they made their first landing to the island in 1505. When the Dutch eventually seized control of Galle , they made a number of improvements; including the enormous sea wall that still lines the fort. Galle Fort is an excellent example of what the synthesis between European and Asian architecture looks like.

2. Yala National Park [SEE MAP]

Yala National Park

Yala National Park is made up of spellbinding vistas and a true abundance of Sri Lankan wildlife. It has the highest density of leopards in the world, so chances of seeing them are very high.

Although leopards are the main attraction here, they are followed closely by elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. The park is divided into five blocks; some of which were zoned to hunters until Yala became a national park in 1938. Ensure you make time to visit the very informative visitor center at the entrance of the park for insightful displays about the area.

1. Sigiriya Rock Fort [SEE MAP]

#1 of Tourist Attractions In Sri Lanka

Sigiriya Rock Fort is utterly impressive. The rock walls rise up 200 meters from the ground, only to give way to a flat plateau at their summit. There are steep stairwells to reach the top and many frescos to marvel at on the way up. At the top, you can find the remains of an ancient civilization, including relics of a palace and monastery.

It would have taken true engineering ingenuity to build a structure at this height so many centuries ago. Around the rock fort are many important caves and gardens; impressively, they are some of the first landscaped gardens in the world.

  • Regional Development: Tourism in Sri Lanka has the potential to promote regional development by encouraging visitors to explore areas outside of traditional tourist destinations. This can help to spread the economic benefits of tourism to less developed regions of the country.

Overall, tourism is an important economic driver in Sri Lanka, supporting employment, income generation, and infrastructure development. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the tourism industry, with a sharp decline in tourist arrivals and revenue. 17 Best Places to Visit in Colombo

Written by Freddy Sherman Updated Dec 28, 2023

Author Freddy Sherman visited Sri Lanka and spent time seeing the sights of Columbo.

Sri Lanka's capital city of Colombo seamlessly combines the incredible culture and history of the island with modern tourist attractions and amenities. The city's unique colonial history (Portuguese, Dutch, and British) adds additional layers to the mix. As the country's capital city, it's also filled with museums and places to visit that illustrate Sri Lanka's rich history.

Too many visitors merely land in Colombo and head directly to one of the country's resort areas. Spend a day or two in the capital, and you'll be rewarded with a deeper understanding of the island's culture.

Beira Lake and the Colombo skyline

The main central business district area is known as Fort, and that's where you'll find a lot of the best places to visit in Colombo like government buildings, museums, luxury shopping, and large hotels. The area is named for the original Portuguese fort, which guarded the harbor area. Directly in front of Fort is the Galle Face Green, a large oceanfront park.

Plan your sightseeing in Sri Lanka's capital with our list of the best places to visit in Colombo.

Lotus Tower

National museum of colombo, sri lanka planetarium, viharamahadevi park, national zoological gardens of sri lanka, nelum pokuna mahinda rajapaksa theatre, mount lavinia beach, national museum of natural history, gangaramaya temple, excel world entertainment park, galle face green, colombo dutch museum, pettah floating market, kanatte general cemetery, national railway museum, where to stay in colombo for sightseeing, map of places to visit in colombo.

Lotus Tower, Colombo

One of the coolest (and highest) places to visit in Colombo is also one of the city's newest things to do. The Colombo Lotus Tower is South Asia's tallest freestanding structure (368 meters/1,168 feet), and a trip to the top rewards visitors with unobstructed views across Colombo and the surrounding cityscape and sea.

The tower, which houses a lot of telecommunications equipment, has an e-sports arena and a 5G VR Innovation Center, a shopping mall (at the base), a revolving fine dining restaurant, and indoor and outdoor observation areas. The tower is also a sight to see from the outside — it's covered in LED lighting and presents seasonal-themed lighting displays each night.

The Lotus Tower, also called the Nelum Kuluna, is designed to replicate a lotus bulb and flower, simultaneously representing the historic culture of the country and its focus on the future.

National Museum of Colombo

The National Museum of Colombo , also called the Sri Lanka National Museum, is the official museum of Sri Lanka and takes you on a journey over the thousands of years of Sri Lankan culture.

It's one of those museums that has multiple types of media, from artwork to artifacts, as well as clothing, jewelry, coins, arms, and craftwork. The displays show both the cultural and natural heritage of the country, presented chronologically, starting with pre-history and leading to the present day.

The Sri Lanka National Museum was started in 1877 during the colonial period by the governor of the island, which was then a British territory called Ceylon.

Give yourself a few hours to fully explore the collections. The museum is housed in its original, grand purpose-built Victorian colonial building in central Colombo near Viharamahadevi Park.

Sri Lanka's first (and only) planetarium can be a fascinating way to escape the hot sun. The Sri Lanka Planetarium is located at the University of Colombo . There's a public entrance across from Independence Square. The large auditorium has 570 seats with a domed ceiling, and the night sky and its constellations are projected onto it.

Aside from the exhibits and programming, the structure itself is architecturally striking and a must-do for Instagram. The lotus flower design shares elements with iconic modernist cathedrals in Liverpool, England, and Brazil.

The Sri Lanka Planetarium is open from 8am to 4pm every day except Mondays. 90-minute public shows are presented on Saturdays at 10am and 2pm, and tickets are less than $1. In addition to the planetarium, there's an outdoor Science Activity Park where kids can play and learn about space exploration and travel.

Golden Buddha statue in Viharamahadevi Park

This giant green space is Colombo's Central Park (and one of its only large open-space areas) and provides areas to relax and enjoy (or escape from) the sunshine. Now named for one of the country's ancient queens, the park was formerly called Victoria Park. Viharamahadevi Park sits between the National Museum of Colombo and City Hall.

The are many fountains in the park, as well as a small zoo . Kids will enjoy the playground. You can visit the Cenotaph War Memorial (a monument dedicated to Sri Lankan soldiers killed in both world wars), as well as the Columbo Public Library , both of which are located in the park. The park is also home to a large, 15-foot-tall Buddha statue , the largest cast brass Buddha statue in the country.

There is a very nice walking path around the perimeter of the park — a lap is about a half-mile (1 kilometer). There are snack stands along the route to get some food and lots of benches and areas to sit and relax. Another fun thing to do is to rent a bicycle and ride on the many designated bike paths.

Bathing elephants at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Formally known as the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens , the city's large Colombo Zoo is located in the Dehiwala area. More than just animals in cages, the zoo focuses on education, as well as animal conservation and welfare. One of the oldest zoos in Asia , it's home to almost 3,000 different animals of all shapes and sizes. The zoo has daily demonstrations with keepers of various animals.

The Columbo Zoo is open seven days a week, from 8:30am to 6pm. In addition to the urban zoo in Dehiwala, in the city of Pinnawala, about two hours outside of Colombo, there is a larger wildlife park, the Pinnawala Zoo and the Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary , both operated by the country's Department of Zoological Gardens.

Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre

This large, modern performing arts complex hosts a wide range of music, dance, and cultural performances. It was recently renamed for the country's former president, Mahinda Rajapaksa. Like many other things in Sri Lanka, the design is intentionally reminiscent of a lotus flower, and the name, "Nelum Pokuna" means lotus pond in the local Sinhala language.

Programming at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre includes symphony performances and opera (Chinese, Sri Lankan, and Western). They also do modern pop concerts . Performances are given in the main auditorium or in the open-air amphitheater. The theater is in central Colombo, across from Viharamahadevi Park.

The theater's schedule can be viewed online, and tickets can be purchased online as well. It's a cool place to visit in Colombo because regardless of what you go to see, you'll find yourself surrounded by locals.

Colonial hotel on Mount Lavinia Beach

Sri Lanka's main beach resort town , Mount Lavinia is a suburb of Colombo. There are many hotels here, and it can be a good alternative to staying in the city. It's an easy 30-minute drive from downtown Colombo (or a 15-minute train ride) and a fun way to spend an afternoon or a few days.

The main stretch of beach is known as the Golden Mile, and it's filled with tourist-focused businesses, as well as an active nightlife scene. Mount Lavinia has also become popular as an LGBTQ+-friendly area, hosting an annual Pride-themed Rainbow Kite Festival in June.

Use caution when swimming as the beach is not a protected bay, so the water can be very rough during certain times of the year. There are some very nice restaurants along the beachfront promenade, and the beach itself is filled with vendors selling everything from food to bathing suits. If you stay at the beach past 6pm, you'll be rewarded with an incredible sunset view.

There is much history to explore here as well. Be sure to stop in the Mount Lavinia Hotel , built in the early 19th century as the governor's mansion, now a classic, colonial grande dame luxury hotel.

National Museum of Natural History

Located right near the Colombo National Museum, across from Viharamahadevi Park in central Colombo, the National Museum of Natural History showcases the country's incredible flora and fauna.

Plants, insects, fish, amphibians, and animals are displayed, exclusively those that are endemic to the country. Many rare animals shown are threatened with extinction. Aside from plants, there are many displays of rocks and minerals, also those that are native to the island.

In addition to the animals and plants, there are skeletons and fossils of ancient and extinct creatures including dinosaurs. The museum is one of the best places to visit in Columbo for families and kids.

Gangaramaya Temple

This Buddhist temple complex was constructed in the late 19 th century. The temple is a place of worship but also looks to educate people about Buddhism. It's also like a museum, as it showcases a lot of physical items, from jewelry to coins and even a vintage Rolls-Royce.

You can also view the temple's most sacred religious relic, a lock of the Buddha's hair, as well as a sacred tree around which the temple was built. Visit during the February full moon (called "Poya") to see the Gangaramaya Temple's annual colorful religious ceremony, which includes a procession led by the temple's elephant.

The temple complex is in central Colombo not far from Bere Lake.

If you have kids and you're visiting Colombo, this compact amusement center needs to be on your itinerary. The Excel World Entertainment Park is a fun local experience with a shopping mall, a few rides, a bowling alley, an arcade, and a food court . There's also a movie theater (showing Western and Bollywood films). The bowling alley is especially popular, as it's the only one in Colombo.

Things to do at the park include laser tag, a carousel, bumper cars, and a bounce house. If you visit during December, the mall is known for bringing in snow to create an indoor winter wonderland called Snow World. It's the only place in Sri Lanka to celebrate a White Christmas, complete with Santa Claus.

Excel World is right next to Beira Lake.

Galle Face Green

This large, oceanfront park area is where many Sri Lankans go to play on the beach. The park is between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean, right in the heart of Colombo next to the Fort area.

It's the largest open space in the city and has 500 meters of beach, along with a beachfront promenade filled with vendors . Colombo's hot sunshine means this is also a popular area for night fun — Saturday and Sunday nights are the best times to visit.

You can wade in the water, picnic on the beach, or fly a kite in the ever-present wind. It's a fun place for families, and it's also good for running.

Colombo Dutch Museum

Colombo's colonial history (it's been a British, Dutch, and Portuguese colony at different times) contributes so much to its current culture. You can learn all about the Dutch influence and history of the island at the Colombo Dutch Museum . The collection includes artifacts, artwork, and furniture, as well as arms and militaria. There is information in English.

The museum building was built in the late 17 th century as the official residence of the Dutch governor. The collection highlights the almost 200-year history of Dutch control of the island's coastal areas, from 1640 to 1796. The island, then known as Ceylon, served as a key stop in Holland's world trade, as it sat on one of the important east-west shipping routes of the country's Dutch East India Company.

Pettah Floating Market

Starting around the year 2000, this formerly industrial area of Colombo was redeveloped into a thriving floating market with almost 100 vendors. Pettah is in central Colombo, about a five-minute drive from Fort.

The floating market is along a canal, lined with sidewalks and wooden boardwalks. They both line and cross the canal, making it a fun area for shopping, strolling, and people-watching. There is great street food here as well. It's also a fruit and vegetable market. You can buy clothes, crafts, jewelry, and even electronics like phones.

Pettah Floating Market is open from 8am to 8pm; sunset is a great time to visit and for photos (about 5pm).

Red Mosque, Colombo

While you're in the Pettah area, visit the city's incredible Red Mosque, known formally as the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid. It was built in the early part of the 20 th century and makes quite a statement with its red and white stone minarets, topped with onion- and pomegranate-shaped domes. They tower over the area, and the domes give the building an almost Russian feel to it, architecturally. The style is called "Indo-Saracenic."

The mosque is near the port, and its contrasting red and white colors made it a visual landmark for arriving ships. It's especially interesting, as the red and white bricks are arranged in different patterns. Some swirl, some spiral, and other areas have alternating colors with a near optical illusional effect.

Visitors, both men and women, are welcome to visit the mosque.

Colombo cemetery

Cemeteries can be interesting places to visit, as they permanently document the local culture. Kanatte is the city's main cemetery and was opened in the mid-19 th century. It has a fascinating mix of memorials, representing all religions and beliefs. Each has its own section, and each has their own style of physical memorials.

The cemetery is also a popular place to visit for science fiction fans, as it's the final resting place of iconic sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke ( 2001: A Space Odyssey ). Clarke was born in Sri Lanka when it was a British colony and later retired here.

The cemetery is in the Borella area, just south and east of central Colombo.

Footbridge on Bere Lake

Another one of Colombo's most popular places to picnic, relax, and go boating or running is Bere Lake. This man-made lake (not to be confused with its larger neighbor, Beira Lake) is surrounded by a lot of green space, yet it's right in the middle of the city.

The area is also filled with jogging paths, and it's a great place for running and biking. There are swan boats you can rent and paddle your way around the lake. There are some snack shops and a floating, fine-dining restaurant. The restaurant is on a boat and floats around during a dinner cruise.

Bere Lake has its own island (connected by a suspension footbridge). The island is a popular spot for couples to take romantic walks. Elsewhere in the lake, there's a small Buddhist temple (Gangarama Seema Malaka) set into the water on several piers. The lake is a great location to take photos, especially at night. You have a beautiful, outdoor environment with the skyline of Colombo as the backdrop.

National Railway Museum

Train buffs and trainspotters will want to visit this open-air museum in Central Colombo, near the city's main Maradana Railway Station. While there is the larger National Railway Museum in Kadugannawa, near Kandy, this original one in Colombo has a respectable collection of carriages, rolling stock, and locomotives, including many steam engines.

The museum is open every day from 9am to 4pm, closing on holidays.

The Most Breathtaking Natural Sights in Sri Lanka

The bronze Buddha statue in Seema Malaka Temple with the surface of Beira lake and modern skyscrapers on background, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Hub Writer

The teardrop island of Sri Lanka is full of natural wonders. From huge rocks in the middle of forests, to herds of wild elephants and rolling hills, Sri Lanka has plenty to offer the nature lover. You’ll find a wide range of ecosystems here, too. There are coastal beaches, dry forests and rainforests. There are foggy hills and mountain ranges. There are lakes big and small, and also tons of tea plantations. Here’s a look at some of the natural wonders of Sri Lanka

Sigiriya is the most visited historical site in Sri Lanka , while also being the most amazing natural formation on the island.

Sigiriya is a natural rocky plateau in the Central Region of the island. The actual rock is a natural formation from the leftover magma of an extinct volcano, but the rock has been used for many things through the centuries. There was a palace at the top of the rock and there are fountains and gardens around the base. Huge lions’ feet were carved on the side of the rock to mark the entrance of the walkway to the palace. One of the walls is graced with protected fresco paintings and another wall was polished to such an extent that it used to mirror your reflection.

The Hill Country

Also in the center of the island is the hill country, where most of the tea plantations are. The rolling hills spread for miles and miles and the weather is cooler than the coast. The mountains are spotted with lakes, waterfalls and tea factories that can be visited either after a hike or on a four-by-four. The best way to visit the hill country is by train since the tracks cross the mountains inside forests and through the fog.

The beaches

The beaches in Sri Lanka are a must-visit for those who come to the island. There is a beach for everyone, from tranquil coasts to surfer waves, the coast is a favored destination. It is not surprising, since the palm trees and pale sand are close to paradise! Some famous beaches are Bentota, Mirissa and Tangalle. The clear waters of Hikkaduwa are a great place to go snorkeling and see the reef and fishes that live there.

The wildlife

There are many national parks and reserves in Sri Lanka . The wildlife is abundant and there are numerous leopards, elephants and peacocks. The best way to experience Sri Lanka wildlife is to visit the national parks and go on safari. There are possibilities to camp or to stay at an eco lodge or just a simple hotel while exploring the landscapes and spotting the animals that live there.

The coast is home to dolphins and whales at particular times of the year and can be seen from boats that go out specially to see these beautiful sea creatures. Along the coast you will also find the fishermen on stilts, a practice unique to Sri Lanka .

beach cricket Sri Lanka

Locals play cricket on one of Sri Lanka's southern beaches, a part of this island nation that has been recovering well from the devastating 2004 tsunami and shows promise as a sustainable-tourism destination.

Sri Lanka: South Coast

99 Coastal Destinations Rated

(Score: 59) Emerging in 2009 from more than 25 years of civil war and still rebuilding from the deadly 2004 tsunami, the tropical island nation of Sri Lanka acutely needs to heal its ethnic divisions and revive its economy. Tourism figures prominently in plans to achieve both goals, including leveraging the assets of the strife-free south coast: beaches, colonial cities, temples, and wildlife. “I believe war-ravaged Sri Lanka, with help from people elsewhere, can use tourism to realize the promise of a peace dividend,” says sustainable-tourism expert Lelei LeLaulu. Elizabeth Becker, a former New York Times correspondent who is writing a book about global tourism, sees Guatemala—where opposing factions collaborated on tourism projects to revive their war-torn land—as a model for Sri Lanka. “The best way to get past the war is to give everyone jobs,” adds LeLaulu, “to ensure that the social benefits of tourism are spread around.” Typical sun-sea-sand package tourism made incursions in Sri Lanka before the civil war flared in 1983 but never took hold in the south. Becker notes that the civil war and the devastating 2004 tsunami have presented Sri Lanka with a prime opportunity to transform itself into one of the world’s finest coastal destinations. “War shielded the island from the worst excesses of industrial tourism,” she says. “It’s one of the last great unexploited regions.” This may apply in particular to the south coast, which was spared much of the conflict. Her concern, looking ahead: “Will a few well-placed people make a lot of money—or will there be a community-focused model, where many people benefit from the prosperity?” Long stretches of the palm-fringed, gold-sand coastline are in foreign hands, with uncertain implications for sustainability. Most accommodations are guesthouses, only some of which are sensitive to ecotourism concerns. Many guesthouse owners at Unawatuna beach, for example, rebuilt just feet from the tide line after the tsunami—despite the demonstrated perils of building close to the water. At Mirissa Beach, in contrast, development blends with the environment. Oil exploration along the coast raises worries, as do the effects of a new international port and new airport at Hambantota—although LeLaulu reports every effort has been taken to make the airport ecologically friendly. The lagoons of Bundala National Park and the savannas of Yala National Park, both near the coast, elicit praise for their conservation management. Yala remains one of the best places in the world to watch leopards stalk through underbrush and Asian elephants graze in grasslands. The region’s cuisine—“an alluring fusion of Southeast Asian and South Indian,” LeLaulu says—is another attraction. The countryside is dotted with stupas and other religious shrines, both Buddhist and Hindu, which provide hopeful symbols for a rapprochement between the brawling Sinhalese and Tamils. “These days you can go to a Hindu temple,” LeLaulu reports, “and find Buddhist priests looking around.” Then there’s the fortress city of Galle, which the Dutch developed in 1663 after seizing this strategic ocean outlook from the Portuguese. Celebrated for its blend of European architectural styles and South Asian traditions, this World Heritage site draws visitors to wander its web of narrow streets and enjoy its open-air cafés—but many buildings need substantial renovations. “Sri Lankans need to knuckle down and do some real planning for sustainable tourism,” concludes LeLaulu. “The potential benefit for them, their environment and economy, and for world travelers, is enormous.”

Introduction

Key stages of development, gantt chart, swot analysis, pest analysis, an innovative tourism and hospitality project.

Sustainably developed tourism has become one of the primary concerns of each country as more people are willing to go to places with better ecology, infrastructure and attractions. Generally, the tourism industry demands that all the spheres of human activities interact in order to attract new visitors to the area. One of such destination is Sri Lanka, which is a beautiful tropical island in the Indian Ocean and has been quite a popular destination for tourists from all over the world due to its breathtaking location and uniqueness.

It has an enormous amount of cultural and heritage-based resources. Moreover, the state is enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The country is rich in natural and cultural resources. It took Sri Lanka 18 years to recognise the need for developing tourism as a driver of its economy. However, recent statistics show that more people prefer other countries for recreation. The purpose of this group project is to investigate the economic factors that can influence the development of Sri Lanka as a tourist attraction site.

The direction of sustainable tourism has become the goal of each tourism-oriented country. The following are the features of tourism sustainability:

  • Optimal usage of environmental resources, biodiversity is preserved and ecosystems function together.
  • Socio-cultural authenticity is respected, cultural heritage is conserved and well-treated and cross-cultural borders are honoured.
  • Economic benefits are equally distributed between all the stakeholders, the level of employment is stable, and opportunities for income growth are available.
  • Poverty and social alienation are eliminated from society (Rasoolimanesh and Jaafar, 2016).

To plan the stages of tourism development, it would be logical to stick to Gantt’s chart, which will help to establish the objectives and deadlines.

  • Any project has as a first step setting objectives, both short and long-term. The main aim of this program is to promote sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka. Achieving these objectives demands understanding the context of the country, that is, its location, economic, ecological and social factors influencing the state (Higgins-Desbiolles, 2018). Sri Lanka can focus on preserving heritage sites to develop new and sustain existing tourism. One of the UNESCO heritage sites in Sri Lanka is the Sacred City of Kandy, which maintains a tooth of a Buddha. This site must be highly protected to preserve its sacredness to be visited by tourists.
  • The next step is to identify the stakeholders and develop working relations with them. Among the stakeholders can be Indigenous people, visitors, different communities, cultural heritage agencies and other groups. Developing partnerships with trustworthy agents can have a positive impact on travellers who come to the island. Sri Lanka is inhabited by the indigenous tribe Vedda who is the earliest citizen of the island. This tribe may have a vested interest in developing tourism sustainability as they may contribute their uniqueness to it. Moreover, heritage agencies will assist Sri Lanka to establish itself as a centre of ancient but well-preserved sights.
  • The appraisal of tourist demand and supply is another stage. Any tourism starts with attractions and people choose countries to travel to due to the popularity of sights it has. An attraction represents an object, person, or place, that attracts people geographically or through remote electronic means so that they can experience it. Therefore, it will be necessary to single out the most popular attractions and create potentially successful and unique ones that will shape Sri Lanka’s image. This step would take several years as erecting new sites is time and finance-consuming.
  • At the stage of assessing, it is crucial to identify issues and perspectives that might affect the future of tourism. For example, the indigenous group of stakeholders might demand more time to train as tourist guides (Amerta, Sara and Bagiada, 2018). Moreover, they may ask for more investment in community maintenance. This step also includes financial planning, which will assess the gains and losses from cooperation with stakeholders.
  • The stage of analysis will measure the SWOT indicators. The study will assess whether Sri Lanka has popular tourist destinations, consider the opportunities available for their promotion, evaluate the factors affecting the difficulty of tourist management, and identify threats to the heritage values. Furthermore, the stage implies measuring the level of urgency and the importance of things to be done.
  • Further steps of development will include creating a logical plan of action, considering factors that may influence achieving goals. The last stage is to approve a program, principles, guidelines to complete the set objectives and make sure all the key points are in the plan. The entire plan will take several years as every element should be measured carefully.

 SRI LANKA 2020

SWOT analysis is a tool which can be effective in measuring internal and external factors that affect and support the decision-making process.

  • Country’s climate and weather;
  • Rich natural resources;
  • Tourism economic potential;
  • External investment attraction;
  • Tourism can bring vitality to the region’s economy.
  • Insufficient tourism management;
  • Slow economy;
  • Lack of amenities for tourists;
  • Surrounding countries with better touristic potential;
  • Lack of advertisements.

Opportunities

  • Developing tourism facilities as a part of sustainable development;
  • Creating jobs for locals;
  • Cultural exchange;
  • Preserving heritage sites and natural resources as a strategy for developing ecotourism.
  • Damaging natural resources due to the emergence of new infrastructure;
  • Tourism customer fatigue;
  • Little foreign investment;
  • Building a new tourism system may impact social structure of the locals.

Political Factors

The political environment may affect tourism in many ways: terrorism, wars, or armed conflicts. Sri Lankan government actively participates in building new constructions such as roads, bridges. Moreover, Sri Lanka should establish relationships with some foreign countries that can influence the tourism industry.

Economic Factors

Sri Lankan economy does not work effectively now as it suffers from unemployment, high taxes and high level of interest rates. These factors affect the sector of tourism.

Socio-Cultural Factors

Tourists love to visit Sri Lanka because of its authentic values, food, traditions. The strategy of offering traditional food at the hotels and restaurants may significantly attract tourists to the area. Sri Lankan art is another attraction that depicts the religious beliefs of the locals.

Technological Factors

These factors are crucial in popularizing tourists in any country. Globalization highly influences all spheres of life. Therefore, in order to improve the sector of tourism, Sri Lanka must install technologies that will allow reaching the customer without using foreign media.

To develop the tourism sector, Sri Lanka should initiate a hospitality program that will presuppose offering hospitality services. These services may include offering local lodging, recreation activities, promoting countries’ arts and culture. As it was mentioned, Shi Lanka owns valuable lands preserved in UNESCO. Therefore, as a part of environmental development, the island needs to maintain as many wild animals, plants, parks and wilderness in general as to establish sustainable tourism (Amerta, Sara and Bagiada, 2018). Typically, people who explore hot countries tend to choose remote areas to relax to enclose with nature and its resources. Therefore, Sri Lanka’s goal is to focus on maintaining its heritage sites and wildlife to attract tourists.

For instance, Sri Lanka owns 22 national parks, most of which are the most impressive in Asia. Thus, the state’s goal is to ensure these national parks are preserved and nurtured to provide picturesque adventures for tourists. Moreover, these parks must be ecologically maintained, which means that the government must ensure there is no negative impact on the environment, such as smoking, littering and other activities that may harm (Rasoolimanesh and Jaafar, 2016).

Another crucial point concerning the ecological side of sustainable tourism is to ensure Sri Lanka’s resources are limited to the customer’s use. It meant that there should be ecological limits that everyone should be aware of to preserve the island’s nature. Natural resources promote visitor experiences that include close contact with wildlife and an undeveloped natural environment. As a result, keeping wild Sri Lanka’s nature will attract many tourists as they will be curious to explore such sites.

Socio-cultural development can be established as well. The socio-cultural factors affected by tourist activities are the most complicated ones to measure and quantify. This factor differs from environmental and economic due to its subjectivity. However, tourism can potentially promote social development by creating workplaces, income redistribution and poverty elimination. Travelling is also an educational activity as it brings visitors and locals together.

Hosts and travelers exchange cultures, traditions, languages and other values. Moreover, cultural understanding is a cornerstone of sustainable tourism. In addition to this, the socio-cultural components also include conservation and transmission of cultural and historical peculiarities of a country. Therefore, Sri Lanka needs to promote its traditions, especially the cultures of the indigenous peoples such as Veddas or Sinhalese. Such promotion will result in the propagation of local heritage, arts, music and other values.

One of the ways to make Sri Lanka the world’s leading attraction is to initiate innovations in tourism. Innovative tourism has become a trendy direction which develops countries so that they are visited year after year. One of the most significant improvements that may put Sri Lanka to the list of the most visited places concerns the technical part (Mihalic, 2016). Among the most successful innovations is the creation of online rental platforms where people can rent apartments, hotels, or condos that would suit their wants. Furthermore, such apps would help to develop more or less stable price orientation and it would be easy to read and receive feedback.

Interactivity on such platforms is a key to tourism development as it allows both sides to participate in discussions concerning recreational activities (Boley, McGehee and Hammet, 2017) Therefore, there will be an opportunity of having everything at your fingertips without thinking about time, space and more payment alternatives. Moreover, the projects aimed to develop hospitality can be created to sustain Shi Lanka’s tourism.

Furthermore, the Sri Lankan websites can be optimized for mobile use. Mobile phones are the necessities now, so each tourist is likely to find or book a place where they want to stay or eat out; thus, the tourists will navigate around the hotel or restaurant websites faster (Budeanu et al ., 2016). In general, Sri Lanka must promote itself through social media so that the people will be fascinated by the views and experiences.

In conclusion, it is relevant to state that achieving sustainable development of tourism aims to meet people’s needs while preserving nature. By creating a sustainable system of tourism, Sri Lanka will benefit, as people would want to visit its heritage site due to its uniqueness. For the most part, tourism will develop in an ecological direction and will attract people from all over the world. Moreover, by strengthening the economic and socio-cultural components, local people will be employed and their cultural values will be shared.

Tourism industry hit by immigration delays and inefficiencies

sri lanka tourist attraction essay

  • Daily arrivals in August drop from 6,000 to 2,000
  • Industry suggests country may have lost around 40,000 potential visitors and about $ 120 m earnings in August alone

By Charumini de Silva

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is facing severe setbacks due to prolonged delays and inefficiencies at the country’s main airport, Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). Reports of long-queues, slow moving lines for visa on arrival, and indifferent service by immigration officers have marred the experience for tourists and returning Sri Lankans alike, resulting in a significant drop in daily arrivals and substantial economic impact.  According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), daily arrivals have dropped drastically from around 6,000 visitors to 2,000 since 18 August.  Industry feedback suggests that the country may have lost around 40,000 potential tourists in August alone, reflecting an estimated economic loss of $ 120 million. Despite these alarming figures, there has been little response from the authorities responsible for immigration.  “We have repeatedly been trying to engage with the Department of Immigration and Emigration Controller General for over a week without success,” a top official of Sri Lanka Tourism told the Daily FT. He said that Sri Lanka Tourism has been lobbying alongside the Tourism Ministry to address these issues, including the simple step of increasing the number of counters for on-arrival visas. Yet, these efforts have been met with silence. The situation has sparked criticism from industry stakeholders and travellers. Complaints highlight the stark contrast between the warm welcome Sri Lanka promises and the cold, apathetic reality encountered at its main airport. These issues have raised concerns about the commitment of immigration services to supporting the tourism industry, a vital foreign exchange generating industry to the economy. Industry stakeholders claimed that the silence from officials and the lack of concrete actions to improve the situation only add to the frustration. “The inefficiencies at the BIA are not only deterring tourists, but also tarnishing the image of Sri Lanka as a welcoming destination. Immediate reforms are crucial to streamline the visa, immigration process to show a genuine commitment to reviving the tourism industry,” industry stakeholders pointed out.

Tourists were busy spooning up ice-cream on the verandah of Tariq Nassim’s home at the picturesque Galle Fort in Sri Lanka , the centre of a boom in tourism during the island nation’s recovery from its worst economic crisis in decades.

Nassim’s ‘Dairy King’, which sells 22 flavours of homemade ice-cream, was just one of thousands of businesses crushed by the crisis that erupted after foreign exchange fell to critical lows, squeezing imports of essentials from fuel to fertiliser.

“That was the biggest hit we faced,” said Nassim, 62, whose 13-year-old business was pummelled by the double whammy of the 2022 financial crisis and the earlier COVID-19 pandemic.

“We haven’t been able to get back the pre-COVID business,” he added. “I don’t know when it will come back.”

The route to a firmer rebound for the Indian Ocean island hangs on the reforms and policies that will be adopted by the winner of this month’s presidential election, the first since the economy crumbled.

“The new president must be capable and able to appoint the right people and run the country competently, because we cannot afford any hiccups,” said M. Shanthikumar, president of industry body the Hotels Association of Sri Lanka.

A foreigner sits outside the Diary King home-made ice cream shop, in Galle, Sri Lanka August 17, 2024

Tourism in the country of 22 million, famed for its pristine beaches, ancient temples and aromatic tea, was crushed as the crisis drove inflation to 70%, power tariffs jumped 65% and the currency depreciated by 45%.

Protests in Colombo by thousands angered at hours of power cuts, queues at fuel stations and hospitals with scarce medicine forced then president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee Sri Lanka, though he has since returned.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, elected by parliament to serve out the rest of Rajapaksa’s five-year term, has led a tentative recovery underpinned by a $2.9-billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and restructuring of $25 billion in foreign debt.

Now inflation and interest rates are down to single digits, while growth of 3% is expected in 2024, for the first time since the economy shrank 7.8% during the crisis.

A key contributor to foreign exchange earnings that directly employs 205,000 people, tourism made up 2.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023. This year, Sri Lanka hopes to earn $3 billion from 2 million tourist arrivals, on par with 2019.

Visitors on Galle Fort’s cobbled streets haggled for silver jewellery with vendors, walked the ramparts and posed for pictures outside colonial buildings.

Although pleased at the rebound, Nassim says his income is still half that before the crisis, as few locals have returned to sample his ice-cream.

He wants the new president to strengthen regulations and make the island a more compelling destination to lure longer-staying big spenders.

Topping industry’s wish list are better facilities, stronger marketing, and streamlined issue of visas.

“Sri Lanka needs foreign exchange and 85% of tourism earnings remain in the country,” said Hiran Cooray, chairman of Jetwing Symphony, which runs about 35 hotels and villas.

“Without doubt safety and stability are most important. If that is lost, then tourism will be a victim.”

Tariq Nassim, 62, the owner of the Diary King home-made ice cream shop

The main candidates in the fray, from Wickremesinghe to opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and Marxist-leaning parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake, have all promised to fix the economy, but take different approaches.

Dissanayake has also promised a new agency to govern and grow tourism, as well as direct flights with countries sending the most tourists and support for mid-level businesses.

Wickremesinghe targets infrastructure upgrades to double arrivals to 5 million within five years.

Premadasa has promised to cut red tape, spur investment, and boost safety for travellers.

“We need growth,” said Shiran Fernando, of business group the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. “We can restructure debt, we can improve reserves ... but it only keeps the stability going, it doesn’t drive growth.”
