How to use the Career Center

Written by: Madeline Lewis, a senior majoring in English (Writing, Rhetorics and Literacies)

As college students, we have a lot on our plates: academics, social life, work, clubs, and more. But one thing to not lose sight of, is that at the end of your time as a student at ASU, you’ll be moving onto professional life. It can be daunting to think about, but luckily ASU has some amazing resources to help.

Career and Professional Development Services  is one of my personal favorites. Their website is filled to the brim with information and resources, and they have great professional staff ready to help. Read on for my tips on how to use the Career Center to your advantage.

The Career Center offers both passive and interactive resources. Let’s go over the passive, online information first.

Handouts The great thing about the Career Center is the plethora of specific resources. And you don’t even need to leave home! As a start, the website has a whole page full of  helpful handouts . Topics range from interviewing to internship and career search.

Resumes A great beginning step to professional development is either making or improving your resume. Gone are days of waiting 2-4 days for a person to review a resume! All ASU students can now access VMock , an AI based resume review platform, for instant feedback to improve their look and flow of their resume.

Don’t forget to check out  all the other resume resources - videos about how to write them, example resumes for every field, and the  ultimate resume checklist .

Interview practice After turning in that shiny resume, you’ll definitely schedule some interviews. Visit the  interviewing page  for videos and handouts about how to prepare both physically and mentally.

InterviewStream  is a great way to get feedback. After making an account (ASU-verified) you will be able to upload videos of yourself answering common interview questions. You can review them, then submit them to the professional staff for specific feedback and tips!

Next, let’s look at how you can interact with the professional staff. The Career Center staff offer appointments based on a huge list of topics. Book appointments with them through your  Handshake  account.

Career Exploration With an ASU degree, you have so many opportunities after graduation! What next? Discuss ideas for potential careers.

Grad School Prep The Center offers appointments dedicated to learning about grad programs, preparing your application, and reviewing your materials.

Online Profiles Your LinkedIn and other professional profiles are a great asset in the professional world. Get timely feedback on how to make yourself stand out!

The Career Center offers a ton of other appointments – check them all out on your Handshake!

With all these professional resources, we don’t need to be nervous for the future. We have all the tools we need to be successful!

Resume building guide

One important way your student can get a jump start in their career development is building their resume. Their resume tells employers a lot about them, but making it easy and straightforward for the interviewer to get eye-catching details and recognize them as a good match can be a challenge. Here are some guidelines for creating a stand out resume.

Content is key

Your student’s resume should speak to not just their skills and experience, but also the quality of their work. When they present a well-written resume, they send a message that they care about the fine details. They also present themself as someone who communicates well — something that’s valuable in jobs as varied as research, customer service, sales and tech support.

Make sure it’s current

Your student’s resume should be a professional, up-to-date presentation of themselves. Whether writing their resume themself or using a resume writing service, their resume should reflect recent formatting and hiring trends. Make sure that your student’s resume leans into the latest expectations and jargon of hiring managers and job recruiters. Due to the high number of resumes received for job and internship listings, i n many cases the first 'reader' of a resume will be a computer.

Make it look professional

A professionally written resume will be properly structured and formatted. Working with a professional resume writer is one way your student can count on their resume looking professional. They can also search for resume templates online. A professional presentation is important when hiring managers spend an average of less than 10 seconds looking at each resume. They don’t want to provide that speed-reading HR person any reason to set their resume aside — and an unprofessional format can be one of the key reasons that causes them to be overlooked.

Bonus tip —  get free professional help with your resume by using the Resume Builder app .

Create a digital portfolio

A portfolio is a living and changing collection of records that highlights and showcases samples of your best work, along with life experiences, values and achievements.  A digital portfolio can be a useful tool in marketing yourself to employers, to professionals that you'd like to interact with, or to colleges and universities where you'd like to pursue a degree.

  • What is a digital portfolio? What should I include? Look here !

Here are portfolio  tools that are free to ASU students and alums :  Digication  or  Google sites .

  • In Digication, start with an easy-to-use SGSUP Template designed especially for our students!  Here's a preview of the template , and here's how to work with it:
  • Create: Follow the “Create a Portfolio from Scratch” Instructions found here:  Create a Digital Portfolio , and search for template “SGSUP."
  • Customize: Add, edit, and remove pages, add text and media, upload files, record video, and design the portfolio to your liking.  Find how-to videos and lists at  Digital Portfolio Help Resources .
  • Publish: When you first create your portfolio, it will be private -- visible only to you.  Once you've added content and customized the portfolio to your liking,  change your  Privacy Settings  to “Public." Now you can share your url with potential employers, admission committees, or any other organizations that would be interested to know your professional story!

Build your professional presence with LinkedIn

Here’s a  checklist  for building a strong student or new graduate  LinkedIn profile , and a  step-by-step video

Do you need a professional portrait?

A professional portrait is a photograph you use to create a personal brand of who you are. Professional portrait usually focus on your upper body including your head and shoulders. Your professional portrait often creates the first impression for a hiring committee, business colleagues, and customers to form of you.

At this time, ASU does not offer a service for students to have their professional portraits taken for them. However, it is recommended to watch the following short video to know the best tips for taking a professional portraits using a smart phone .

Many nonprofits could benefit from expertise that you have -- whether creating a map, gathering or analyzing data, or finding new ways to reach out to community members.  Find an organization that advocates for something you’re passionate about, and reach out to them . For example, a GIS student helped a local conservation organization analyze their membership, producing a report on how and where membership had grown.  A planning student worked with a nonprofit to understand the process of organizing an annual community event, and wrote up a handbook that will allow groups in other locations to host similar events. Not sure what organizations exist in your community?  You can find out a great deal from a web search; and Idealist.org or   Volunteer Match  may provide additional ideas. This could develop into a for-credit internship , too!

Professional organizations can also use help from students. Volunteering with a professional organization is a great way to build connections with professionals, while you build skills . Check out a list of planning/GIS and geography organizations in the previous section of this page. Our school also hosts student organizations that offer great professional development opportunities!

GISCorps , sponsored by the professional organization URISA, coordinates short-term, volunteer-based GIS services to communities in need worldwide .  You can learn about the initiative at https://www.giscorps.org/ , and can apply to become a volunteer at https://www.giscorps.org/become-a-volunteer/ .

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team is an international group dedicated to humanitarian action and community development through open-source mapping . Learn the basics of OpenStreetMap ; then volunteer on any HOT project. Connect with YouthMappers ASU to meet other students involved in this initiative.

TIP: If you volunteer, keep a record of the hours you spend and your responsibilities. These hours can contribute to 'experience' requirements for government jobs especially, and jobs of any kind!

ASU Resume Analyzer

The Arizona State University Cloud Innovation Center, in partnership with Arizona State University, is in the process of developing an internal solution to help ASU CIC managers better sort through the large amount of applications they get when they post a student job opening.

The Arizona State University Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) hires student cloud developers once or twice a year.  When they engage in this hiring process, they often receive upwards of 200, or even more, applications.  Each application contains basic information, a resume, and a cover letter.  It can take up to six or seven hours for managers at the CIC to comb through the resumes manually, which can slow down the hiring process in a time when help is needed on teams at the CIC.

Once managers have specified the skills they are looking for, the Sun Devil Skill Sorter will utilize Amazon Comprehend to classify resumes and cover letters that are sent as bundles by ASU Human Resources. This allows managers engaging in the hiring process to easily sort through applications in an easy-to-read format.  The PDF files will then be converted to text documents and run through the Jurassic-2 Jumbo Instruct Large Language Model.  From this model, candidates can be identified for their strengths and will be moved to the interview phase of the hiring process.

Supporting Artifacts

The Amazon Working Backwards process produces three artifacts - a Press Release, a list of Frequently Asked Questions, and a Visual depiction of the user experience. You can find the artifacts here:

The ASU CIC is working internally to develop the solution.

About the ASU CIC

The ASU Smart Cities Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) is a strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is supported by AWS on ASU’s Innovation campus - SkySong. The mission of the CIC is to drive Innovation Challenges that materially benefit the greater Phoenix metro area and beyond. The CIC will do this by solving pressing community and regional challenges, using shareable and repeatable technology solutions from ideation through prototype, as a service for the greater human good.

The CIC also provides real-world problem-solving experiences to students by immersing them in the application of proven innovation methods in combination with the latest technologies to solve important challenges in the public sector.

The challenges being addressed cover a wide variety of topics including homelessness, water conservation, vandalism, pedestrian safety, digital service delivery and many others. The CIC leverages the deep subject matter expertise of government, education and non-profit organizations to clearly understand the customers affected by public sector challenges and develops solutions that meet the customer needs.
