After a long wait the new school for Presentation College Athenry is opening for classes on Monday.

This €20 million state of the art Presentation College building will be able to serve 1,000 pupils as demand for education services in the area grows.

It’s taken many years of campaigning by parents, teachers, and the local community for ‘The Pres’ Athenry to get this new facility.

Since first opening its doors in 1947, the Pres has educated three generations of locals in some 70 fine years of work.

Galway East TD Seán Canney congratulated Presentation College on the move to its new school at Ballygurran.

He added that as someone who has worked in education he understands “the importance of providing modern facilities for top class education. In that way, we enable students to maximise their full potential.”

Presentation College isn’t the only major upgrade to Athenry’s education facilities that’s making progress.

Construction got underway on a new school facility for Clarin College last December as is currently expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

“Together these schools will meet the present and future demands for second level education in Athenry,” Seán Canney said

Deputy Canney added that when the new Clarin College is complete, the old campus would be available to develop as primary and secondary gaelscoils for the area.

Cairde Pres, an outreach group made of people who’ve been involved in Presentation College over the years, said that they were feeling nostalgic but excited about the future.

“The students, the teachers and all those involved with ‘The Pres’ helped make so many great memories.”

“We know our lovely new school will help us build more wonderful memories.”

“We look forward to welcoming you all to the new Presentation College at Ballygurraun, Athenry. when we have settled in.”

Galway – Shantalla

The story of our community, presentation convent, shantalla, co. galway.

Shantalla House was founded in October, 1950. The founding sisters were Mother Brendan Joyce, Mother Brigid Nolan and Sr. Ursula O’Toole. The fact that it was adjacent to the site of the new primary school, which was to be conducted by the Presentation Sisters from the Galway community, was the reason for its purchase; it was also to be used as a hostel for Sisters attending University College, Galway. The town/town land was a working class area where a new Local Authority housing estate was being built.

Shantalla House was purchased for £3,000; standing on its own grounds of about an acre and a half of land. It was purchased from Michael Ryan. The description of this first house would be described as a large, two-storey building with a semi-­basement built probably in the early or mid eighteen hundreds. A laneway at the back, known as the “red lane” separated it from neighbouring houses.

Scoil Bhride was the first school and it was opened and blessed by Bishop Michael Brown on 27 th July, 1955. It had cost £20,820 of which £3,000 was a local contribution. The local contribution came from Community funds, from donations by friends of the community (one anonymous donor gave £100), from sales of work and entertainments and from the proceeds of a weekly draw. The school comprised two Infant classes: 1 Junior and 1 Senior and two 1 st Classes. The number of children was 200 of which 101 were boys and 99 girls.

Shantalla House, which was very old when it was purchased, had been steadily deteriorating so that it became necessary to build a new convent on the same grounds, just beside the school. The Sisters moved into the new convent on 19 th March, 1958, the feast of St. Joseph. It was dedicated to Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe. A new extension over the Chapel – a large en-suite room- was added between 1977 and 1983.

The first itinerant pupils joined the school in 1967. That year one itinerant family was housed in the area and five children from this family attended the school. Boys were officially taken into 3 rd class in 1985 and in 1987, girls were taken into 7 th Class, and in 1988, boys were taken into 7 th Class.

Significant visitors in the past were Mr. Paddy Crosby, who visited the school in 1963 and selected a team to appear on the R.T.E. programme “ The School Around The Corner “. In November, 2006, Mrs. Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, visited Scoil Bhride to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the school.

Over the years the following additions were made: 2 nd Class was added in 1956, 3 rd Class was added in 1959, 4 th Class was added in 1962. Significant additions to the Primary School were made between 1976 and 1978 – the additional classrooms enabled staff to ensure that 5th Class was added in 1979 and 6 th Class in 1980.

Galway’s newest secondary school, has been established as a result of the amalgamation of Our Lady’s College and St. Mary’s College, Galway. The new school represents a marriage of the historic educational philosophy of St. Mary’s College with two other towering education traditions in Galway City – Mercy and Presentation through Our Lady’s College.

The original St. Mary’s College at St. Helen’s Street opened its doors in March 1844 under the Patronage of Bishop George Browne. Reflecting on the experience of its founder, Fr. John Paul O’ Toole, who had difficulty in obtaining a good secondary education in his native Galway, St. Mary’s College offered a broad and enlightened curriculum. The school flourished, having fifty pupils on its roll within a year, and in 1846 the status of the school was raised to that of a minor seminary. It had a dual aim, namely, to train young men for the priesthood and to provide a first class Catholic education for Irish boys.

Work on the current building, designed by the renowned architect W.A. Scott, began in 1910 and on Wednesday 26th of August 1912 the Diocesan College opened its doors to 60 boarders and 17 dayboys. Since those early years the college has advanced and adapted to the educational needs of its ever-changing environment, with the original building having been extended and modernised.

Our Lady’s College was formed in September 2016 following the amalgamation of local Mercy and Presentation secondary schools who had educated the young women of Galway city for decades.

The merging of these traditions into a new co-educational entity promises to provide an excellent, modern, outward looking educational facility for the present and future generations of young people in Galway.

Our new school is under the dual trusteeship of CEIST - a Catholic Education Irish Schools Trust and Galway Diocese. CEIST is the trustee body for the voluntary secondary schools of the Daughters of Charity, the Presentation Sisters, the Sisters of Mercy, the Sisters of Christian Retreat and the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. The Vision of CEIST is to create a compassionate and just society inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Their Mission is to provide a holistic education in the Catholic Tradition.

The CEIST community is committed to living the vision and the core values of the Charter. These values have their roots in the Gospel of Jesus and have been central in the tradition of the five founding Congregations. Scoil Chroí Íosa, known locally as the Pres, continues a tradition of education which the Presentation Sisters began in 1815. We place a huge emphasis on the creative arts, active learning and bringing local and national expertise into the classroom., as you browse through our website i hope you get a sense of how actively engaged the children are in learning through the arts, gardening, woodwork, music, physical activity, mindfulness, play and art therapy, yoga, cookery and much more. we have created partnerships with many local and national organisations to ensure the children are exposed to a wide variety of stimuli and experiences. we continue to transform the physical environment of the school to stimulate creative thinking, from our wonderful library to our glorious garden, here's what the department of education inspectors had to say about our school and wellbeing when they visited in 2018:, " the overall quality of support for pupils’ well-being is very good. a caring and inclusive atmosphere exists and pupils’ holistic development is catered for very effectively. pupil voice is fostered very effectively through initiatives such as the student council, which has positively influenced decisions to improve pupil well-being. the role of the hscl teacher is carried out to a high standard. a broad range of initiatives to support the link between the school and the community and to include parents are in place. a very good range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are provided for pupils to develop a wide range of skills and talents, many of them voluntarily by the teachers and other stakeholders. '', let's get active.

EMPHASIS WILL BE ON PARTICIPATION AND FUN, HEALTHY EATING AND DAILY EXERCISE. WE ARE ENTERED IN THE FAI 5 A SIDES INTERSCHOOL COMPETITION. WE HOPE THAT EVERYONE CONTINUES TO STAY HEALTHY AND ACTIVE IN SCOIL CHROÍ ÍOSA THIS YEAR.

EUROPEAN SCHOOL SPORTS DAY 2022 HOST SCHOOL!!!  

WE WERE ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED TO BE ASKED TO HOST THE 2022 EUROPEAN SCHOOL SPORTS DAY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE IPPEA AND SPORT IRELAND. WE HAD SPORTS STARS FROM GALWAY UTD FC, GALWAY GAA AND CONNACHT RUGBY DOING ACTIVITIES WITH THE KIDS AND SPEAKING TO THEM ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ACTIVE, EATING HEALTHY FOOD AND ENJOYING BEING PART OF A TEAM AND A COMMUNITY. THE STAFF WORKED REALLY HARD TO PREPARE FOR THE DAY AND THE SCHOOL LOOKED FANTASTIC. EVERYONE HAD A MEMORABLE DAY DESPITE THE BAD WEATHER! WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW

THIS YEAR WE WILL BE CONTINUING OUR FANTASTIC MUSIC PROGRAMME. ALL CLASSES FROM INFANTS UP TO 2ND WILL BE DOING COLOURSTRINGS LESSONS AND ALL CHILDREN FROM 3RD-6TH WILL BE LEARNING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. THE SCHOOL CHOIR AND BAND WILL BE PLANNING AHEAD FOR PERFORMANCES. THE INSTRUMENTS WE ARE LEARNING ARE GUITAR, VIOLIN, DRUMS AND KEYBOARD. WE REALLY ARE THE SCHOOL OF ROCK!!!!!!!!!! THE CHOIR PERFORMED IN NUIG ON THE 26TH JAN FOR THE PEACE PROMS CONCERT. WHAT A FANTASTIC NIGHT'S ENTERTAINMENT IT WAS! WE HAVE FORGED TREMENDOUS PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE VERY BEST MUSICIANS AND GROUPS OVER THE YEARS INCLUDING MUSIC GENERATION, MUSICAL YOUTH FOUNDATION, MAOINCHEOIL NA GHAILLIMHE, FUNKY DRUMS AND MORE!

If you go down to the woods today...........you'll probably meet our 1ST CLASS! They have been doing forest school activities each Friday with the help of Esti and Ms O'Donnell. They have had tremendous fun while learning about nature, taking risks, teamwork and co-operation, language development, motor skill development and much more. There will be six trips in total and everybody is really enjoying it.

OUR SCHOOL GARDEN IS A WONDERFUL PLACE. WE LEARN TO GROW FRUIT, VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS. WE SOMETIMES DO OUR LESSONS OUTSIDE IN OUR OUTDOOR CLASSROOM. THE GARDEN NEEDS LOTS OF VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH KEEPING EVERYTHING GROWING WELL SO IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING OUT LET US KNOW. PARENTS VOLUNTEER IN THE GARDEN ON WEDNESDAY MORNINGS

WE ARE ALL ABOUT CREATIVITY IN SCOIL CHROÍ ÍOSA. IN THE PAST WE HAVE PILOTED THE CREATIVE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE FOR THE DEPT OF EDUCATION. WE WERE ASSIGNED A CREATIVE ASSOCIATE, MIRIAM CUDDY WHO SAT DOWN WITH OUR PLANNING TEAM TO DEVISE A PLAN FOR DEVELOPING CREATIVE IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN LEARNING FOR OUR PUPILS. WE ALREADY HAVE A FANTASTIC REPUTATION FOR FOSTERING CREATIVITY, ESPECIALLY THROUGH THE ARTS SO THIS GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER DEVELOP ON THE GREAT WORK ALREADY DONE. WE ARE ONE OF ONLY 3 SCHOOLS IN IRELAND CHOSEN FOR THE CHILDREN'S BOOKS IRELAND PROJECT 'EVERY CHILD A READER' AND WE HAVE BEEN WORKING CLOSELY WITH OUR CHAMPION OF READING SARAH MOORE FITZGERALD OVER A 3 YEAR PERIOD. WE ARE ALSO PAST WINNERS OF THE BABORÓ 'ABOVE AND BEYOND AWARD' FOR FANTASTIC WORK IN PROMOTING THE CREATIVE ARTS IN EDUCATION. SOME OF OUR HOTSHOT PUPILS ARE DOING SO WELL WE HAVE DECIDED TO SEND THEM OFF TO UNIVERSITY!!! WE RECENTLY HAD 3 GRADUATES WHO WERE PRESENTED WITH CERTIFICATES BY THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT. THIS IS A TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY FOR HIGH ACHIEVING PUPILS TO BROADEN THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

OUR STAFF HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING IN THE INCREDIBLE YEARS PROGRAMME. THIS IS AN EVIDENCE BASED BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME ENDORSED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND THE NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICE NEPS. THE PROGRAMME FOCUSES ON REINFORCEMENT OF POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR AND CREATING A POSITIVE HAPPY ENVIRONMENT IN THE SCHOOL. WE ARE HAVING GREAT SUCCESS TO DATE AND THE CHILDREN ARE ENJOYING ALL OF THE PRAISE AND REWARDS FOR THEIR GOOD BEHAVIOUR. AT THE MOMENT WE ARE REALLY EMPHASISING THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD MANNERS, RESPECT AND KINDNESS. WELL DONE TO EVERYBODY.

Afterschool care

We provide afterschool to pupils of Scoil Chroí Íosa from jr infants up to 6th class. Our experienced staff help the children with their homework and do various activities also such as Power Soccer, Stretch and Grow, Badminton and more. We also have many volunteers from NUIG who help out on a regular basis. The Afterschool is a paid service but subsidies are available through the National Childcare Scheme.
