Assessment of Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking: Measuring APA Goal 2 Student Learning Outcomes
2020, Teaching of Psychology
Goal 2 of the APA Goals for Undergraduate Major in Psychology, Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking, addresses the development of scientific reasoning and problem-solving, including effective research methods, in undergraduate psychology students. These skills serve as the foundation of not only introductory courses but also the entire psychology curriculum. In this article, we address why these skills are critical to help students interpret information and assess claims and review the current practice of measuring student reasoning in this domain. The reach of Goal 2 is broad, including the application of scientific reasoning to interpret psychological phenomena, the demonstration of psychology information literacy, the interpretation and execution of basic psychological research, and an understanding of sociocultural influences in scientific inquiry. We discuss the value of both formative and summative assessments in this area, offer examples of assessment tools currently in u...

This pilot study is an initial exploration of a theoretical rubric proposed to "describe the progress of students' acquisition of scientific inquiry" (Halonen et al., 2003, p. 196), and an application of the utility of the rubric. Twenty-two undergraduates from a woman's college participated in two sections of experimental psychology. Students consisted of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who completed general psychology courses. Consistent with the Halonen et al. (2003) model, results indicated that authentic research experiences in the first phase of the course were positively correlated with changes in scientific thinking in a second phase. In turn, experiences in the second phase were positively correlated with evidence of advanced thinking skills in a third phase. The findings suggest that much of the basic skill knowledge acquired in the beginning lectures, textbook readings, and writing instruction of the course enhanced students' ability to apply that k...

This study attempts to identify scientific literacy differences between students with a background in psychology as opposed to students with a background in other sciences or no science. A scientific literacy survey was distributed to students enrolled in introductory psychology and political science courses. Students who have taken psychology courses compared to the other students scored significantly higher on the survey, with the mean score of 66.5% for the psychology students, 59.5% for students with general science courses, and 59% for students with no science courses (F (2, 344) = 8.74; p< .0002). A post-hoc analysis showed that the psychology students scored significantly higher than both other groups. A χ2 test was also conducted by dividing the scores into three groups- “low” (below 55%), “medium” (54% to 74%), and “high” (75% and above). The results demonstrated a significant effect (χ2 (4)= 27.64; p<.0001) with psychology students disproportionately populating the “high” scores.

Good scientific research depends on critical thinking at least as much as factual knowledge; psychology is no exception to this rule. And yet, despite the importance of critical thinking, psychology students are rarely taught how to think critically about the theories, methods, and concepts they must use. This book shows students and researchers how to think critically about key topics such as experimental research, statistical inference, case studies, logical fallacies, and ethical judgments.

Encoding (putting it in) The first process in the memory system is to get sensory information (sight, sound, etc.) into a form that the brain can use.
