Fully Funded PhD Programs in Accounting

Fully Funded PhD Programs in Accounting

Last updated April 18, 2022

As part of my series on  How to Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list of universities that offer full funding for a PhD in Accounting. PhDs in Accounting are in high demand. This degree can prepare you for a career in academia, corporate accounting, legal work and financial regulation.

“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full time students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary for the three to six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Funding is typically offered in exchange for graduate teaching and research work that is complementary to your studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

You can also find several external fellowships in the  ProFellow database  for graduate and doctoral study, as well as dissertation research, field work, language study and summer work experience.

AICPA Names Four new Accounting Doctoral Scholars

Accounting Doctoral Scholarship Program identifies CPAs who can teach the next generation of tax, audit and management accounting professionals

NEW YORK (April 13, 2021) – The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) has named four new Accounting Doctoral Scholars (ADS), which identifies currently practicing CPAs interested in becoming accounting professors to assure future accountants have necessary and up-to-date skills.

“Firms and businesses alike are seeking CPAs with professional skepticism, critical thinking, technological skills, and the ability to understand how to leverage data to make informed decisions” said Jan Taylor-Morris, CPA, CGMA, Ph.D., academic in residence, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, representing AICPA & CIMA. “The profession is evolving, and we believe that having recently practicing CPAs join the ranks of academics will help inform practice-relevant research as well as  allow these Ph.D., CPA professors the opportunity to share with the next generation of CPAs  the increasing role data and technology play in the profession. .”

The following individuals will receive a $20,000 stipend to support their doctoral education:

  • Katie Daugherty, Indiana University
  • Brian Forsberg, University of Illinois
  • Lauren Frederick, Cornell University
  • Andrew Jones, Indiana University

The ADS program, first launched in 2009, recruits practicing CPAs who have expressed interest in and demonstrated potential for becoming college professors to attend an all-expenses-paid seminar. The seminar provides exposure to what it takes to earn a PhD in accounting and to teaching, research and service requirements of a college faculty member. Those who ultimately apply to and are accepted into one of more than 40 affiliated PhD programs receive a $20,000 stipend to support their education.

Previous iterations of the Accounting Doctoral Scholars program focused on audit and tax accounting, but the program has expanded to include management accounting, information systems and financial analytics.

The program is intended to help grow the number of CPAs in the classroom and ensure a steady supply of accounting professors. Educators with recent, relevant workplace experience provide their students with a greater understanding of what a career in the accounting profession entails and the value a CPA license adds.

The program, funded by the AICPA Foundation, is one of many Institute initiatives to help academia and practice align more closely, including putting practitioners on Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation reviews, offering discounts to academics to attend AICPA conferences, and free resources to help academics engage with practitioners on accounting program advisory boards.

The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants also developed resources to help collegiate accounting programs enhance their curricula as the profession updates the CPA licensure model and exam as part of the CPA Evolution effort. The  Academic Resource Hub  offers case studies, assignments, readings and webinars to help accounting educators ensure students are prepared to meet the needs of the marketplace.

The  Faculty Hour  webcast series   provides CPA Evolution status updates and discussions on how to integrate relevant topics, such data analytics and cybersecurity, as well as systems and other emerging technology-related subject matter into accounting curricula.

In June 2021, AICPA and National Association of State Boards of Accountancy , with support of the American Accounting Association, will unveil a model curriculum to guide faculty in addressing the accounting coursework needed by those pursuing licensure under the new CPA Evolution model.

To date, more than 108 CPAs who went through the Accounting Doctoral Scholars program have completed their PhD, and another 45 are currently enrolled in PhD programs. ADS candidates selected for funding, as well as all candidates attending the ADS Orientation Conference and enrolled in an ADS Participating University, are also eligible to apply for the William (Bill) Ezzel Scholarship .

CPAs interested in transitioning into an academic career can learn more about the program at www.adsphd.org . This year, the program will be hosting a free virtual GMAT bootcamp for the first 60 candidates who RSVP.  More information on the bootcamp is on the program’s website.

Spotlight on PCAOB Scholars

“I am so blessed to have been selected as a 2021 PCAOB scholarship beneficiary. This scholarship played a big part in me graduating debt free with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Kent State University last year. It will also assist me as I start a Masters program this coming Fall. As I get closer to being CPA eligible, I am so grateful for the PCAOB's generosity in helping me achieve my career goals and life dreams.”

- Evangeline Agum, Kent State University

“In March of the final semester of my undergraduate education, I was honored and thrilled to be notified that I am one of the University at Albany’s recipients of the PCAOB Scholarship. As an incoming professional in accounting, there was two things on my mind 150 credit and obtaining my CPA. After working for the majority of my college career this scholarship has allowed me to cut back on work and focus on my degree and studying for CPA exams and for that I am extremely grateful.”

- Markus Clausell, SUNY at Albany

Markus-Clausell

“As a woman and as a member of the Latino community, my dream of becoming an accountant sometimes felt out of reach. Being a recipient of the PCAOB scholarship, however, has allowed me to not only follow this dream but also complete my master’s in accountancy debt free!  It’s hard to express just how honored and grateful I am to be a 2021 PCAOB Scholar."

- Elyse Portal, University of Louisville

“Going into my senior year, my financial aid was dwindling to nothing. This scholarship allowed me to spend more time to focus on my studying and not have to deal with the financial burden. Your scholarship was the biggest blessing, and I am totally appreciative of the opportunities you provide to young aspiring accountants. The award I received from the PCAOB is a perfect stepping stone to catapult my career.”

- Brandon Richardson, Southeastern Louisiana University

Scholarship Program Administration

The Board utilizes an outside administrator to assist with program management and execution. This includes contacting eligible educational institutions, collecting nominations, and disbursing funds, as well as certain customer service functions.

PCAOB scholarships are one-time awards and cover the following qualified educational expenses:

  • Tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance at the institution
  • Fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at the institution (note: these items must be required of all students in a given course).

The funds may NOT cover room and board, travel, research, or optional equipment and other expenses that are not required for enrollment or attendance.

Checks will be made payable to the Nominated Student’s Nominating Institution and mailed to the nominated student with a financial aid cover letter describing permitted uses.

Selection of Nominating Institutions

With the exception of certain Group 3 institutions discussed below, all U.S. colleges and universities that are regionally accredited and AACSB accredited with respect to accounting or business programs, and which report conferral of bachelor’s or master’s degrees in accounting, will be considered Eligible Institutions and stratified in three groups. Certain regionally accredited institutions without AACSB accreditation may be considered Eligible Institutions in Group 3 as defined below.

Subject to availability of funds, Eligible Institutions who meet the criteria for Groups 1, 2, or 3 will be considered Nominating Institutions and will be invited to submit a nomination.

  • Group 1 will include all regionally accredited institutions with AACSB accredited accounting programs which reported conferral of accounting degrees to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
  • Group 2 will include the top 150 regionally accredited institutions with AACSB accredited business (but not accounting) programs, as determined by the total number of undergraduate and graduate accounting degrees conferred in the most recent five years for which data is available (as reported in IPEDS).
  • Group 3 will include the largest regionally accredited and AACSB accredited accounting degree-granting institution for each state not represented in Groups 1 and 2, or the largest regionally accredited accounting degree-granting institution if a state has no AACSB accredited institution, as determined by the total number of undergraduate and graduate accounting degrees conferred in the most recent five years for which data is available (as reported in IPEDS).

Student Eligibility Criteria

Students must be selected and nominated by their institution. Students eligible to become a PCAOB Scholar must:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate accounting program at U.S. colleges or universities identified as a Nominating Institution above
  • Start classes on or after August 1 with respect to the applicable academic year
  • Demonstrate interest and aptitude in accounting and auditing as evidenced by an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher or being in the top 1/3 of their overall class
  • Demonstrate high ethical standards
  • At the time of nomination, not be a PCAOB employee or a child or spouse of a PCAOB employee. (Note: This includes all full-time and part-time employees of the PCAOB, including interns, and independent consultants who are natural persons.)
  • Demonstrate financial need (Defined as being eligible to receive a Pell Grant or requiring other Federal financial aid for a significant portion of the expected or actual billed cost of attendance, as determined by the institution)

The PCAOB Scholars Program is merit-based, but the PCAOB encourages educational institutions to give special consideration to students from populations that have been historically underrepresented in the accounting profession.

The PhD specialization in Accounting prepares students to become accounting scholars engaged in research and teaching at the highest levels in the general areas of financial information and contracting within and across organizations.

Yale SOM’s specialization in accounting is designed to develop strong theoretical and empirical skills. There is a heavy emphasis on original research to form a base for sustained scholarship. Co-authored research, with both faculty and fellow PhD students, is encouraged and supported.

Yale’s accounting program is small (matriculating one to two students each year), and involves informal and spontaneous frequent interactions with faculty. The program maintains a 1:1 faculty-to-student ratio. Students interact with emerging research in a host of ways, from conferences held on campus to weekly seminars where faculty and fellow PhD students present and discuss their work.

Candidates tend to pursue a broad range of research interests, helped by courses in accounting as well as in various areas of management, Department of Economics, Yale Law School, and other parts of the University. They develop fruitful relationships with other Ph.d. students, especially from the Finance PhD program.

Examples of research submitted as dissertations by students in the program:

  • Intended Benefits and Unintended Consequences of Improved Performance Disclosure
  • Asymmetric Inefficiency in Market Response to Non-earnings 8-K Information
  • Real Earnings Management in Nonprofit Organizations
  • How Does More Frequent Reporting Reduce Information Asymmetry?
  • Real Earnings Management in the Financial Industry

Accounting ph.d., earn a ph.d. in business and a major concentration in accounting and learn the essentials in theory, research methods and contemporary accounting issues.

Accounting Research involves the systematic and scientific study of accounting systems, institutions, standards and regulations for the purpose of understanding and characterizing their decision-facilitating and decision-influencing roles within organizations, in product and capital markets, and across economies. For instance, financial reporting systems play many roles in publicly held organizations characterized by separation of ownership from control. They help investors in valuing their claims to firms in financial markets (valuation role), are essential for corporate control and managerial performance evaluation (auditing, governance and stewardship roles), and impact how firms allocate their resources and make financial decisions (real effects). In a similar vein, management accounting systems facilitate planning and control within organizations. Often, these many roles of accounting information interact, posing challenges for system designers, policy makers, and standard setters.

The main goal of the accounting doctoral program is to train students to do high-quality research, and become influential scholars in top academic institutions. The accounting group has world-class senior faculty and young, talented scholars with considerable expertise in the above topics and a vibrant research environment. In addition, the program leverages the resources and excellence of Rice University in related fields such as finance, economics and statistics. Students will be required to take courses in economics, statistics, econometrics, finance, and a rigorous set of cutting-edge research seminars covering the essentials in theory, research methods, and contemporary accounting issues.

Program features:

  • World-class faculty
  • Engaging research environment
  • Highly competitive financial package
  • Resources of a premier research university
  • Personal attention and mentoring in the Rice tradition

Overview of Accounting Ph.D. Seminar Series

Introduction to Accounting Research The course offers a thorough and broad-ranging introduction to accounting theory and research. It covers origins and evolution of key relevant accounting institutions, thought, paradigms and methods.

Analytical Research The course provides a thorough and comprehensive introduction into the key economic theories underlying a significant part of contemporary cutting edge accounting research. The course is designed to be sufficiently deep to support both students intent on pursuing analytical research and at the same time broad enough that students with an empirical orientation will gain a solid foundation.

Empirical Research in Accounting The course provides a thorough and comprehensive synthesis of empirical accounting research, covering the key “classic” papers in the major research areas, methodological issues and emerging areas within empirical accounting research.

Advanced Contemporary Accounting Research The course provides a more advanced treatment of cutting edge, predominantly empirical accounting research. Accordingly, the course content is expected to change frequently to reflect the current state of accounting research.

For doctoral students who have chosen accounting as their area, the Ph.D. degree requirements are as follows.

  • Students must complete a review course in Quantitative Methods in the summer before the beginning of the first semester.
  • During the  first two years of the program, students must take a minimum of three doctoral-level courses per semester and preferably four courses in total per semester. The chosen courses must be approved by the area PhD  advisor.
  • The student is expected to attend at least four doctoral seminars organized in the accounting area during the student’s first two years in the Ph.D. program and additional accounting doctoral seminars as required by the student’s advisor. The student may attend the same seminar more than once upon approval by the area PhD advisor or a faculty mentor/advisor.
  • The student is expected to attend all research workshops (presentations of faculty members from other business schools that visit JGSB to present their research or internal presentations by JGSB faculty or Ph.D. students) organized in the accounting area during the student’s tenure in the Ph.D. program. The student must lead a discussion preceding the workshop with the other Ph.D. students each semester. Ph.D. students will designate a senior Ph.D. student to keep track of this requirement and provide a report to the area faculty advisor at the end of the spring semester.
  • The firs-year summer research work should involve a replication of analysis of a published/working paper with an extension in the area of the student’s interest. The summer study/paper must be presented to accounting faculty at a research workshop no later than September 30th in the fall semester of the second academic year. The content and format of this presentation will be determined by the student’s faculty mentor/summer research advisor. A failure to meet this deadline may result in the student being put on probation.
  • The second-year summer research must result in a working paper (with at least preliminary results), which must be presented to accounting faculty at a research workshop no later than November 30th in the Fall semester of the third academic year. Although we encourage solo-authored study, this summer research could be joint work with the faculty mentor/faculty advisor, but the student is expected to take the lead. A failure to meet this deadline may result in the student being put on probation.
  • Students must pass a comprehensive exam administered by the accounting faculty at the end of the second year. Only students not on probation and with a satisfactory annual evaluation are eligible to take the comprehensive exam. The exam will be jointly administered and graded by accounting faculty, under the supervision of the accounting area advisor. The exam is focused on the coursework taken in accounting and topics covered in research workshops offered by the accounting area. A successful performance in the exam will demonstrate the student’s competency in accounting and provide the foundation from which he or she begins the research that will form the basis of the dissertation.
  • Students are expected to constitute their dissertation committee by the beginning of their fourth year in the program.
  • During the dissertation phase (post successfully completing the comprehensive exam), students are strongly encouraged to take one course every semester (from the first semester of the third year to the second semester of the fourth year) to advance their skills and knowledge in tools, techniques, and topics relevant to their area of interest/dissertation topic. Students are expected to select these courses in consultation with the area PhD advisor or faculty/dissertation advisor.
  • Students are expected to successfully defend a dissertation “pre-proposal” by the end of the Fall semester of their fourth year to their dissertation committees. The pre-proposal is expected to lay out the main thesis topic, methodology, discussion of the relevant literature, and preliminary analysis.
  • Students are expected to successfully defend their full dissertation proposal by the end of the fourth year.
  • Students are expected to complete and defend dissertation within a maximum of 7 years from time of matriculation.

About the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Accounting

UNSW Business School’s Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting (Program code 1521) will prepare you to become a globally focused and socially engaged research leader. You’ll be joining a cohort of high-achieving research students in tackling modern-day challenges at the forefront of Accounting, working alongside leaders in the field (ranked 20 th in the world, QS Subject Rankings 2022 for Accounting and Finance ). This is your opportunity to become integrated into the UNSW Business School’s community of scholars.

You’ll first undertake rigorous coursework covering research methods and key research topics in auditing, financial accounting, and management accounting. As part of your Doctoral Program, you’ll also be involved in research projects from an early stage. This training will equip you with the skills required to identify, analyse, and solve problems in the field.

You’ll then pursue full-time research under the supervision of high-profile UNSW academics, culminating in a doctoral thesis. There will also be exciting opportunities to develop your teaching portfolio.

Your PhD thesis will showcase your research skills and enable you to make an original contribution to the field of Accounting. While your PhD degree is geared toward preparing you for a career in academia, other career paths (e.g., consulting, government, industry, non-profit) are also enabled.

PhD program structure

Year one: master of pre-doctoral business studies (mpdbs).

Your first year of study is designed to provide a rigorous foundation to conduct independent research. You’ll learn a range of methodologies and build your communication and presentation skills. You will also work as a research assistant on research projects and start working on your own research as your skills develop. The first year will also help you to identify your potential doctoral thesis supervisors.

The MPDBS (Year One) is a fully funded program, which includes a tuition waiver and stipend for all accepted applicants. Upon completion, you’ll be awarded a Master of Pre-Doctoral Business Studies (MPDBS) degree.

The vast majority of students have historically then moved on to Year Two of our Doctoral Program with a scholarship covering tuition and a stipend.

Year Two: Specialised Coursework & Identification of Thesis Topic

During the second year, you’ll continue to undertake advanced coursework in the Accounting stream. You’ll choose up to eight additional research courses in consultation with your supervisors and the postgraduate research coordinator, with an opportunity to take at least one course outside of your specialised discipline.

Your second year is also when you’ll identify your specific thesis topic with your supervisors. You’ll engage in literature review and research design and present your research proposal to the School at the end of the year for confirmation of the candidature.

Years Three – Four: Original Research & Your Doctoral Thesis

The final two years of the program are focused on conducting full-time research and completing your doctoral thesis. This is your opportunity to address some of the biggest challenges in Accounting and make a significant contribution to knowledge in the field. Your research will offer new critical thinking and withstand critical analysis from expert researchers in the area.

The UNSW Business School ranks 15th worldwide for Accounting and Finance.

An increasing number of PhD graduates find employment in business, government, and the non-profit sector. Nineteen of the largest ASX companies have PhD graduates on their senior executive teams.

Your PhD thesis will set you on the path to a career in a premier research institution, anywhere in the world. Throughout your research degree, you’ll also have many opportunities to develop your teaching portfolio.

Beyond academia, there is also significant demand in the private and public sectors for people with deep knowledge and sound research and analytical skills*.

Whether you’re looking to pursue a career in academia, or take your research skills out to industry, a PhD in Accounting from UNSW will get you there.

Accounting Scholarships

Do you like working with both people and numbers? If so, accounting might be the career path for you. This popular major stresses communication and critical thinking skills while also teaching the art and science of number crunching. Also popular are accounting scholarships. Continue reading to find out more.

Accounting degree programs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some programs stress applied knowledge while others favor theory-based instruction. Some programs are stand-alone 4-year bachelor's programs while others are 5-year combined bachelor and master's. Some programs feature an internship as a degree requirement while others do not. Be aware of your educational and vocational goals and make sure they match the educational outcomes of the program in question.

Typical courses you'll enroll in as an accounting major include taxation, financial statement analysis, auditing and information systems. Of course, also included will be beginning, intermediate and advanced accounting. If your program requires an internship you'll work as an accounting assistant in an actual business setting while receiving course credit. In addition to the core accounting courses you will also enroll in a number of liberal arts and humanities electives.

The majority of undergraduate accounting degree programs are designed to provide a generalized accounting education. If you want to specialize you'll have to wait to get to the graduate level. However, there are a small number of bachelor's programs with specific emphasis such as auditing or information systems. At the graduate level, the most popular degree program is the Master's of Business Administration in Accounting (MBA). Other graduate degree areas of concentration include cost accounting, forensic accounting and managerial accounting.

The career outlook for accountants is quite strong. Career options will be most robust for those with Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification. Degree candidate interested in pursuing CPA status will need to complete 150 credit hours of course work. If becoming a CPA is part of your vocational goals, you'll probably want to select a combined bachelor's and master's degree program. The more traditional 4-year programs will not provide you with the academic stats you'll need to pursue certification.

$100,000 LaNay F. and Gordon B. Davis Scholarship Endowment Established to Help Education and Accounting Majors

August 26, 2024

In the 1950’s, Idaho State University—then known as Idaho State College—shaped Drs. LaNay and Gordon Davis’s life. It was here that the Davises met, fell in love, and graduated together in 1955.

As a way to honor the life-changing advice they received from ISU faculty, the LaNay F. and Gordon B. Davis Endowed Scholarship Fund was recently established. This scholarship was created to support first-generation students who are pursuing degrees within the ISU College of Education or the College of Business.

A Pocatello native and first-generation college student, LaNay earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education Home Economics from ISU in 1955. She recalls that her professors at ISU gave her some very important advice about choosing a field of study. Initially wanting to be a history teacher, her faculty told her that, at that time, history classes were typically taught by coaches, so it may be very hard for her to get a job in that field. She instead chose home economics as a major.

This critical decision allowed her to begin her career as a middle school home economics teacher in Mountain View, California upon graduation. This income thus supported the couple during Gordon’s four years of graduate study. LaNay then went on to earn a Master of Social Work and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology from the University of Minnesota. She successfully built a private practice specializing in individual, marriage, and family therapy where she helped individuals and families through mentorship, guidance, and counseling.

Originally from Idaho Falls, Gordon, also a first-generation student, completed his undergraduate degrees in both political science and accounting from ISU. Outstanding advice from Gorgon’s ISU accounting professors, also helped start him on a career trajectory that not only changed his life, but changed the future of business education. Initially, Gordon majored in political science, after returning from his LDS mission, he decided to also major in accounting because it had a clear path to a career. His accounting professors told him that he had great potential, and they encouraged him to do two things: (1) to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam before graduation, which he passed on his first try, and (2) to apply to graduate school in accounting, which was something that he had never considered, and to apply only to the very best universities in the country.

Gordon took this advice and went on to continue his studies by earning both a Master of Business Administration and a Doctor of Philosophy in Business from Stanford University. He started his academic career as an assistant professor of accounting at the University of Minnesota. Once the earliest mainframe computers became available, he began researching how computers could change business. He later became the Honeywell Professor of Management Information Systems in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Gordon was recognized as one of the founders of the academic discipline of Management Information Systems (MIS). Additionally, he was a CPA and held honorary doctorates from the University of Lyon in France, the University of Zurich in Switzerland, and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden. In 2006 he received the ISU Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater.

The $100,0000 LaNay F. and Gordon B. Davis Endowed Scholarship Fund was created to honor the impact ISU faculty had on the Davis’s. This scholarship is available to first-generation college students, who have a 3.0 GPA or higher, and who are enrolled in either the accounting program at the ISU College of Business or any K-12 educational studies programs that includes elementary, secondary, special, and early childhood education at the ISU College of Education. To learn more about this scholarship, please visit isu.edu/ scholarships.

“With support from scholarship endowments such as this, we can continue to offer financial assistance to numerous talented and committed students who are eager to pursue careers in education,” said College of Education Interim Dean, Dr. Esther Ntuli. “Your generosity not only eases their financial burden but also allows them to concentrate on their academic and professional growth.”

Gordon and LaNay were married for 67 years, before Gordon’s passing in 2022 at the age of 91. Together, they had four children, all of whom are college graduates, and three of whom have advanced degrees.
