Berkeley’s graduate engineering programs ranked #3 nationwide

Berkeley Engineering has retained its position among the top three graduate engineering programs nationally in the new annual rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report. In the assessment of 214 engineering graduate schools, UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering had the highest-ranked public university program.

The magazine’s rankings included all of the university’s individual graduate programs in the top 5, with civil engineering and electrical engineering ranking first and chemical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, environmental engineering, industrial engineering and materials engineering all in the top 2. This year, U.S. News included computer science — separate from computer engineering — in its graduate rankings.

The statistical data was collected in fall 2020 and early 2021. Rankings were calculated based on a weighted average of 10 indicators, including peer assessment, recruiter assessment, student selectivity, mean GRE quantitative score, acceptance rate, student-faculty ratios, research activity expenditures and percentage of faculty in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

The magazine will release its undergraduate school rankings in September.

MIT was named the best graduate engineering school  by  US News & World Report,  according to the publication’s 2023 ranking of best graduate schools—a position it has held since 1990, when the magazine began ranking such programs.

In addition, MIT’s chemistry , computer science , economics (tie), and mathematics (tie) programs were also ranked No. 1, as well as six individual engineering disciplines:

  • Best Graduate Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering Program
  • Best Graduate Chemical Engineering Program
  • Best Graduate Computer Engineering Program
  • Best Graduate Electrical/Electronic/Communications Engineering Program (tie)
  • Best Graduate Materials Engineering Program
  • Best Graduate Mechanical Engineering Program

The MIT Sloan School of Management also ranked high, occupying the No. 5 position for the best graduate business programs (tie). In the rankings of individual MBA specialties, MIT placed first in four areas:

  • Best Business Analytics MBA Programs
  • Best Information Systems Programs
  • Best Production/Operations Programs
  • Best Project Management MBA Programs

The magazine bases its rankings of graduate schools of engineering and business on two types of data: reputational surveys of deans and other academic officials, and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research, and students.

The  US News & World Report  rankings come on the heels of the annual world university rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), which has ranked MIT as the No. 1 university in the world for 10 straight years.

Current Master's student: The best part about coming to Stanford are the people and the ability to find a group of friends who are interested in the same things that you may be very interested in . Coming from India, there is a large Indian community here such that I have never felt homesick. The campus does get a bit dead during the holidays but it is to be expected as people who do live in the USA, go back for vacations. Overall the professors are great and are leafing professionals in their respective fields doing some of the most fascinating research in the world. I would highly anyone to come here to experience this type o f workhand play hard culture that is fostered into this place. ... Read 3 reviews

Master's Student: I am currently in the Sustainable Systems Engineering, Masters of Engineering program. I was not an engineering undergraduate student, but halfway through my undergrad I realized I had a passion for renewable energy and started enjoying STEM classes. To get into this current program, in undergrad I had to supplement many STEM and intro engineering classes to be able to apply to the SSE program. This worked out well for me and I went straight to grad school after undergrad. I work full time and do my graduate school part-time, which is challenging to balance time, but completely worth the work and commitment. This will give me opportunities to work and further the renewable energy field in the future. ... Read 2 reviews

Master's Student: As a current Co-term student at RPI, studying to obtain a Masters of Engineering degree, the department is supportive, interactive, and fun! To prepare for the first semester, the school of engineering held new graduate orientations and individual department orientations for new students to help prepare them for their graduate careers. Moreover, the MANE department, located on one of the main floors of the engineering building, demonstrates their support through interactive ways such as posting a big poster of all the graduate students on one of the halls, celebrating achievements in academia on school TVs, and lastly host events such as graduate student appreciation day filled with prizes, food, and recognitions. If I had to point out a rather difficult experience, it would be the lack of resources when it comes to learning about and picking classes, especially knowing what classes are offered in a given semester. ...
