It is very uncommon to find a fully free online PhD program – Universities are businesses and want you to pay money to get their qualifications.  Also, it is very common for PhD students to get paid via stipends throughout their PhD.

Personally, I travelled to Australia to do my PhD for the adventure and lifestyle. I was able to get a fee-waived placement and international student fee waiver for three years to finish my degree.

• Apply to STEM programs: Many PhD (and Master’s) programs, especially in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fields, are fully funded in the US. Most state schools and Ivy League schools have fully funded programs for these fields.
• Prepare for stiff competition: Because these programs are fully funded, the competition is high. It’s not uncommon for hundreds or even thousands of students to apply to these programs each year, with only a small fraction being accepted.
• Consider assistantships: Fully-funded programs usually provide a stipend in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions. These roles involve either teaching or conducting research under a professor’s supervision.

What are Fully Funded PhD Programs?

Tell your academic mentor that you’re thinking of going for your PhD, and they’ll tell you, “Unless they’re offering full funding, don’t do it.” It’s conventional wisdom in academic circles, but conventional wisdom is something like an old wives’ tale. Sometimes it’s right. Sometimes its not. If you read free Phd on a program’s website, don’t just assume it’s a completely free PhD program – always read the small print! More often, you’ll see the term fully funded in graduate school literature, so let’s clarify the meaning of “free PhD” and “fully funded PhD.”

The meaning of “fully funded PhD” can be tricky. If you mean paying nothing at all, ever, for a PhD, you might be wrong – but you might be right. Full funding may simply mean tuition is paid, in which case books, supplies, and fees are coming out of your pocket. But full funding, at a very generous university, may mean exactly what it sounds like – everything you need is paid, with no money (or student loans) from you.

However, free PhD programs come at a cost. That’s why you’ll rarely find a free online PhD – most free PhD programs are on-campus. Why? They’re free because you pay in your time, teaching or doing research. Free online PhD programs might be rare, but online PhDs can earn their own keep with flexibility, convenience, and affordability. They may not be free, but online PhD programs are usually cheaper than on-campus PhDs, unless they’re fully funded.

What Do We Mean By Fully Funded?

If you’re looking into getting a free PhD, look at the package. The Package: Every university’s “fully funded” package is a little different, depending on what the school can afford, but there are generally two essential elements:

• Tuition paid in full
• Stipend for living expenses

Having your tuition paid in full is nice, but there are a lot of other expenses involved in getting a PhD. There’s also a lot of time involved in getting a PhD, and the rigor of a serious PhD program means it will be very difficult to work a full-time job and earn the degree. A stipend for living expenses can help out tremendously, even if it’s just $14-$15,000 a year (a common range).

However, better programs will offer more. Look for:

Health Insurance – Many fully funded PhD programs will offer health insurance, at least for the student as an individual; some very generous programs will offer more comprehensive plans for the student’s spouse and children as well. It’s a PhD program – lots of students will be well into their 30s, with families to support. Health insurance goes a long way to making life a little less stressful.

Research/Travel Funding – To compete on the academic job market, you’ve got to do research, publish, and show up to present at conferences. If you don’t manage to do those things while you’re still a student, you may already be dead in the water when you graduate and hit the job market. But traveling to conferences is expensive (especially if you’re living on $15,000 per year). A PhD program with extra research and travel funding is doing it right.

Your PhD Program: Teaching or No Teaching?

It’s not an iron-clad rule, but it’s pretty certain – if you’re getting a fully funded PhD, you’re going to have to do some teaching or research. Most of the time, the stipend for living expenses is tied to a research assistantship or teaching assistantship. That means working for one of the tenured professors, either helping with research, or helping in the classroom. For some part of your week, you’ll be looking up citations, finding sources, and entering data (if you’re a research assistant), or leading discussion groups, grading exams, and fetching coffee (you wish we were joking).

It’s also pretty common that, after the first year as an assistant, you’ll take on a class or two completely on your own, as the teacher of record. These assistantships have their upsides and their downsides, like anything else in life. On the upside, they give you valuable experience teaching and doing real academic research, experience that helps you feel more confident in the classroom, and gives you some good stories to tell in job interviews (or over drinks with friends). On the downside, teaching takes time and energy, and it can be easy to forget that your first priority is to get your degree – the teaching is actually secondary. But just try telling that to the students who are paying their tuition for your class.

We’re not saying that a teaching requirement for a fully funded PhD program is a good thing or a bad thing; that’s for each student to decide. We are saying that it’s a reality you’ll have to cope with, so be sure you’re sure – you may have to teach. Ask any teacher – you’re as ready as you’ll ever be.

Program Overview

Exceptional education-practitioners will engage with an internationally renowned faculty to cultivate and practice curiosity, critical discourse, and perspective taking in a unique and rigorous course of study using the lenses of social justice, systems thinking, appropriate research methods, and empirical inquiry.

Coursework includes the latest research on the social determinants of education; mind, brain, and teaching; entrepreneurship; data and measurement; and technology. The redesigned program allows our doctoral students to customize their program by expanding their choice of electives so that they may focus more deeply on their professional interests that align with their problem of practice. Our online EdD prepares education practitioners to be transformational leaders within their professional settings.

The vision of the Johns Hopkins EdD program is to impact complex educational problems across the globe by preparing education practitioners to think critically and systemically about problems within their professional settings and develop deep understanding and insights to lead positive, sustained change within those settings.Our graduates create new areas of research, promote distribution and utilization of research findings in professional practice, and contribute to wider public discourse and policy.

The EdD program includes areas of interest. Applicants can indicate one or more areas of interest they think are related to a problem of practice and would like to explore. Current areas of interest are:

Digital age learning and educational technology, entrepreneurial leadership in education, mind, brain, and teaching, urban leadership.

Courses in this area of interest are designed to prepare candidates for leadership roles in advanced academics and gifted education with an emphasis on research and application of current best practices in the field. Based on the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Advanced Standards in Gifted Education Teacher Training, candidates will develop specialization in leading and evaluating programs and services for students who are creative, advanced, gifted, and twice exceptional. This area of interest is appropriate for candidates who: (a) want to deepen their expertise and prepare for leadership roles in their school, district, or state; (b) work in related nonprofit organizations, independent schools, or plan to develop their own educational enrichment programs; and (c) aspire to move into teacher preparation and research roles.

It provides educators with knowledge of how emerging research in the learning sciences can inform teaching and learning. Students gain the knowledge and skills to interpret basic and applied research and apply relevant findings to educational practices and policies. Many of the world’s top research universities are based in the USA, so it’s no surprise that it’s an extremely popular destination for PhD students.

Although the USA has a reputation for being an expensive place to study, there are also some fantastic opportunities for PhD funding (including many fully-funded PhD programmes for international students).

This page will give you an introduction to the cost of a typical doctorate in the USA, as well as a guide to some of the most generous forms of PhD funding available at American universities.

As we’ve already mentioned, the USA has an expensive reputation – but you shouldn’t let that put you off.

There’s a reason why such a large number of American universities can be found among the top-ranked in the world: many institutions have huge budgets and endowments, allowing them to offer generous fully-funded PhD scholarships to graduate students (regardless of nationality).

These are a few key points to bear in mind when beginning your search for PhD funding in the USA:

• Public universities in the United States differentiate between in-state and out-of-state when it comes to fees, so you won’t necessarily be charged more than an out-of-state domestic student if you’re an international student
• Private universities don’t distinguish between domestic and international students
• It’s common for universities to offer ‘full-ride’ PhD scholarships to talented grad students
• The Fulbright Commission administers several funding schemes for international students to complete their research in the USA
• Federal student loans are available to US nationals

The cost of a PhD in the USA

With a huge range of universities offering PhD programmes in the USA it’s no surprise that American PhD fees vary a lot. They also tend to be exaggerated or otherwise misreported based on very high figures for prestigious Ivy League universities. These aren’t typical.

Actual fees vary between public and private institutions and sometimes depend on a students’ residency status:

• Public institutions charge an average of $12,394 per year for in-state students on graduate programmes. Be aware that fees for out-of-state students (including international students) are higher than this.
• Private institutions charge an average of $26,621 per year for all students on graduate programmes.

These figures are based on data published by the US National Center for Education Statistics . As a general rule, public institutions will be cheaper than private institutions, but will charge a higher out-of-state fee to international students. This can mean that the actual difference in fees is smaller than it seems above. Private institutions, on the other hand, may have more funding available.

The best way to get a sense of the tuition fees you will actually pay for a US PhD is to look up a few programmes in your subject and compare their prices. Just make sure you’re comparing the same thing: some universities will list fees per year, whereas others may list fees per semester or per credit.

In-state vs out-of-state

US universities don’t distinguish between international students and domestic fees in the same way as the UK. But public universities do differentiate between students from inside or outside their state. This is because ‘in-state’ students have their education partly subsidised by their state government. As an international student you’ll pay the same fee as a US student from ‘out-of-state’.

Living costs

The sheer size of the USA makes it almost impossible to offer accurate figures for student living costs across all 50 states. So we haven’t. You should definitely include this in your research and preparation though. Some parts of the USA are much more affordable than others. Your university’s international office may be able to help provide a sense of typical graduate student expenses for rent, groceries and travel.

Other expenses

American universities will usually charge additional fees for processing graduate school applications. You’ll also need to budget for admissions tests, language tests and your visa.

Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships

The US-UK Fulbright Commission is an organisation dedicated to fostering research connections between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Every year they offer postgraduate scholarships to talented British students to help them study at an American university (and vice versa).

A Fulbright Postgraduate Award offers the following benefits:

• A contribution towards your tuition fees (this could cover the first year of fees or fully-fund the entire degree, depending on the award and institution)
• Health insurance cover
• Visa sponsorship

Fulbright Scholars will also gain valuable networking opportunities through a global alumni organisation, as well as support during their studies from the Institute of International Education (IIE).

There are a range of Fulbright Postgraduate Awards available, with some providing a fully-funded PhD degree and others only offering a one-year tuition fee waiver. You can check out the Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships on their website.

Eligibility for Fulbright Postgraduate Awards

The main eligibility requirement for a US-UK Fulbright Award is, unsurprisingly, that you must be a British citizen. However, if you’re a foreign national settled in the UK you may also be able to apply.

You’ll also need an undergraduate result of at least a 2.1 (although a 2.2 may be accepted on a case-by-case basis).

As the primary goal of the US-UK Fulbright Commission is to foster new connections between the countries, the ideal candidate won’t have spent more than six months in the United States already.

Applying for a Fulbright Postgraduate Award

The application process for a Fulbright Award usually opens in August, with a deadline in early November.

You’ll need to make an online application with the following documents/details:

• Academic transcripts
• Passport photo
• Personal statement
• Research objectives

You’ll also need to complete a separate application to the university you want to do your PhD at.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview in the following February.

Other Fulbright PhD scholarships

The above information focuses on the US-UK Fulbright Commission, which is part of a much larger network of organisations devoted to helping talented international students attend American universities.

Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Fellowships , for example, offer Indian students the chance to complete a funded research placement (six to nine months) in the USA.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program provides Nigerian doctoral students with the opportunity to conduct PhD research in the United States.

Fulbright Germany’s Doktorand:innenprogramm (PhD student programme) is a similar scheme to help German researchers complete work in the USA.

University PhD scholarships

It’s actually very common for US universities to provide fully-funded PhD programmes for international students, and relatively rare for successful candidates on graduate programmes to be entirely self-funding. The ‘sticker price’ for a US PhD may seem high, but it’s probably not the price you’ll end up paying.

Funding will take various forms. ‘Full-ride’ PhD scholarships will cover fees, living costs and other expenses. Other common options include partial fee discounts or full fee waivers.

In general, private universities will have more funding than public universities (though they will also have higher fees). You can search some of the PhD funding available using an official tool provided by Education USA . These results aren’t exhaustive though: make sure you also check with the university you are considering.

We’ve done some of the leg-work for you and produced a list of international PhD scholarships available at some of the top American universities, which you can check out below.

Assistantships

As well as awarding direct funding, it’s common for US universities to offer assistantship positions to their graduate students. These are effectively a form of employment with the university : you will fulfil a selection of responsibilities in exchange for a stipend or a fee waiver.

Common types of assistantship include:

• Graduate teaching assistantships – These involve teaching and mentoring undergraduate students on courses related to your subject. Responsibilities may include leading discussion groups, supervising essays and helping with course admin. Graduate students doing this kind of work are sometimes referred to as ‘TAs’ (teaching assistants) or ‘adjunct faculty’. Find out more about graduate teaching assistantships .
• Research assistantships – These involve helping faculty with their research. Responsibilities may include collecting and recording routine data, monitoring experiments or helping set up equipment.
• Administrative assistantships – These involve clerical, administrative and secretarial work for the university or graduate programme. Responsibilities may include data entry and management, assisting with meetings and other activities or helping with other routine office tasks.
• Fellowships – These don’t involve additional work but may be conditional on maintaining a certain standard for your academic work or pursuing particular directions with your research.

Graduate teaching assistantships and research assistantships are the most common types of assistantship, but it’s worth checking to see what different universities offer.

Federal grants and aid

National science foundation (nsf) graduate research fellowship program (grfp).

The National Science Foundation’s GRFP is a long-established federal grant scheme for talented STEM graduate students in the USA, providing the opportunity of a fully-funded PhD. Past fellows include over 40 Nobel laureates.

The GRFP offers the following financial benefits over a three-year period:

• $37,000 annual stipend
• Tuition fee allowance of $12,000 (paid directly to the university)

Applicants for the NSF GRFP must be:

• American citizens, permanent residents or nationals
• Graduate students beginning a research-based Masters or PhD degree in a STEM subject
• Embarking on Masters or PhD study for the first time

As you might expect, competition for these prestigious fellowships is high, with around 12,000 applications for 2,000 places.

There are four main elements to an NSF GRFP application:

• Graduate research plan statement
• Two or three reference letters

The deadline for submitting these documents is usually mid to late October, with the results announced at the beginning of April.

Federal Student Aid for US students

If you’re a US citizen, you may be able to receive financial aid from the government to help fund your studies. Generally, international students are not eligible to apply except in very specific circumstances .

You’ll also need to have financial need, but there is no income cut-off to qualify for financial aid. Rather, there are several factors considered when assessing your application.

Unlike undergraduate students, Masters and PhD applicants are considered independent for financial aid purposes, meaning only your own income and assets are taken into account, as opposed to your parents’.

The types of federal aid available for postgraduate students include:

#1 Federal loans

Loans available for Masters students include Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct PLUS Loans .

For Direct Unsubsidized Loans , your university determines how much money you’re eligible to receive, up to an upper limit that depends on your personal circumstances. Find out more about Direct Unsubsidized Loan limits. Interest rates are currently set at 7.05% for the 2023-24 year.

Direct PLUS Loans don’t award a set amount. Instead, you can borrow up to the full cost of your Masters programme, minus any other forms of financial support you are receiving for it. Interest rates are set at 8.05% for the 2023-24 year.

To apply, you’ll need to be studying a course at 50% intensity or more (part-time programmes are eligible for direct plus loans, provided you study on a ‘half-time’ basis or greater). You’ll also need a good credit history to apply a Direct PLUS loan. You won’t normally be able to receive a Direct PLUS Loan if you have a record of credit default or overdue debt for existing loans. In some cases, a parent or other US citizen may endorse your application as a guarantor.

As a Masters student you won’t repay your loan until six months after you cease to be enrolled on your course. Note that this repayment period will normally still come into effect if you exit your graduate programme early.

#2 Work-study

Federal work study provides part-time jobs for US students who have financial need, to help them cover their living costs and tuition fees.

Roles can be on or off campus, and where possible related to your field of study. Off-campus jobs are generally for nonprofit organisations or public agencies, and must be performed in the public interest.

Postgraduate students may be paid by the hour or by salary, depending on the type of role performed. How many hours you’re allowed to work will be determined by your university’s financial aid office.

Federal work-study is generally not available for international students, but there are other ways to earn money alongside your studies. We cover this in our guide to working in the USA as a student .

Applying for financial aid

To apply for financial aid, you’ll need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Filling in the FAFSA involves creating an online account and receiving a unique FSA ID.

You should have access to the following documents and information when filling in the FAFSA:

• Your social security number
• Your driving license number (if you have one)
• Your Alien Registration Number (of you are not a US citizen)
• Tax documents or tax returns for yourself and your spouse (if married)
• Records of any untaxed income, savings, cash or investments

The FAFSA form for becomes available for course starting the following year on 1 October annually. So if you’re planning to study a Masters or PhD starting in Autumn 2024, you’ll be able to fill in the FAFSA from 1 October 2023 .

The FAFSA deadline for 2023-24 is 30 June 2024 .

Monrovia – Ten repentant sex-workers have received certificates in skills training, such as pastries, soap making and sewing.  The program which brought together parents and well-wishers, was organized by Metro Harvest, Zogos weCare, and Madam Sheela Logan StarGurlz Empowerment and Counseling program, with partners United Nations, Gbowee Peace Foundation.

In her moving testimony, student Wilhelmina B. Korvah, said she was ten years of age while living with her parents, she got on the street as a street vender and never went back home.

She further explained how she met Mother Mamie and Rev. Dormah, when she received a call from her aunt who told her about Rev. Dormah hosting a party and because she loves clubbing, she took advantage and attended, and then she met Rev. Dormah convinced her to leave the streets and that was how she left the streets. And he took her to mother Mamie for the past four years.  

“I now realized that the past life was not good for me because Mother Mamie is a loving and caring mother and Rev. Dormah and mother Mamie stood by me as a mother and father in my life when my parents gave up on me. And our mother Mamie stood by me until I gave birth to my second child and we are with her.” She said.

“I returned to the streets again looking for what I did not lose and then I got pregnant with my second child and then Rev. Dormah and Mother Mamie, were the ones who saved me. Because I now understand that there is nothing on the streets besides sickness and death,” she added.

Esther Kollie, another graduate, gave her testimony of how she lived with a single mother and never experienced a father’s love, and when her mother died and left her to take care of five siblings, she had to do “street hustle” to support her brothers and sisters.

“In my street hustle, I met a friend who took me to her pastor who counselled me and advised that I explained my story to the church to see if some members in the church could help support me, so after I told the church my story, they used my story to mock me,” Esther said.

“I became so ashamed of myself, and after I left the church and the community, I came to live on Front Street and I heard about the StarzGurlz program and decided to take advantage of it.  The program took up my time from morning up to 3 p.m. So, I had no time to be less busy. I want to extend a big thank you to StarGurlz because through their program, I am a changed person. And I am grateful to Rev. Dormah and mother Mamie for standing by me and I am in starGurlz for good,” she said.

Serving as the guest speaker, Rev. P. Karyidia Gartor, Sr. Pastor of First United Methodist Church, said the testimonies of the young girls were touching. And the lady who said she was mocked in a church, a place where she should have been received with open arms, but instead mocked, and wondered what the church is turning into nowadays. 

Preaching from the book of Luke, she spoke on the theme: ‘The News is good’ which talked about freedom.  She said the news is good because transformation has taken place in the lives of the girls who are free from their bondage.  

“What happened to these girls is highly spiritual because Jesus talked about setting the bondage free in the bible, so these girls have been set free. You do not know until you come in contact with the right spirit, before you will know what you did in the past is bad. As one of the girls said she is in the Starz girls program for good, this is the spirit of God.” she said  

Madam Malichi Quennah AKA Mother Mamie said she met Rev. Dormah seven years ago and since then, they have been visiting the various ghettos. 

“Taking care of these girls and children is not easy but we are grateful. We have a baby we rescued from the ghetto, who was a day old and now she is four months. We have Joshua who is now four years old and others, we have come a long way. I am called Zogo mother and some people mistake zogos as crazy people, can even help me with my market bags when I go to the market. I am very grateful,” she said.

Rev. Caleb S. G. Dormah also known as the Zogos Rev. said he refers to his young people known as disadvantaged youth, Diamond in the dirt. 

“I call them my diamonds in the dirt, because they come from the dirt, and once cleaned, they can shine more than ever. I have found out that many of these young people I am working with, come from good homes. And many are smart, as long as you give them the opportunities,” he said.

Parent Isaiah Lincoln, also Community Chairman of Front Street and father to the president of the graduating class, said it was not easy to get the ten girls to graduate from the program because at times some of the girls would refuse to go to school. 

“My own daughter who is the President of the class would say Aunty Mamie is giving her a hard time so she will not go to school, but I forced her. So, I extend my thanks to both Rev. Domah and Mother Mamie for making this day a success.”

At the end of the program, the graduates exhibited their production outside for sale and some well-wishers bought a few.
