How to use H5P effectively in Moodle

Moodle LMS offers a wide range of tools and features to create engaging and interactive eLearning experiences. One such feature is the integration of H5P (HTML5 Package) content, which enables educators to create interactive videos, quizzes, presentations, and more. This comprehensive guide will explore how to use H5P effectively in Moodle, enhancing the learning experience for students and streamlining the course creation process for educators.

What is H5P?

H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package. It is an open-source software that allows educators to create interactive and engaging content for their courses. With H5P, you can create a variety of content types, such as quizzes, presentations, and interactive videos, which can be either embedded into other activities or added as standalone H5P activities in Moodle.

Integrating H5P content into your Moodle courses offers several benefits:

Interactivity: H5P content enhances learner engagement by adding interactive elements to your courses.

Ease of Use: Creating and editing H5P content is simple and straightforward, making it accessible for educators with varying levels of technical expertise.

Flexibility: H5P content can be easily embedded into other Moodle activities or resources, allowing for seamless integration into your courses.

Responsive Design: H5P content is designed to work well on various devices and screen sizes, ensuring a consistent learning experience for all students.

Creating and editing H5P content in Moodle

Content Bank

Moodle’s Content Bank is a central repository where educators can create, edit, and manage H5P content. To create H5P content in the Content Bank:

  • Access the Content Bank from Course navigation > More > Content bank (Boost theme) or from Site pages in the Navigation block.
  • Click the Add button and select a content type.

H5P Moodle content bank Image

For more information, refer to our Content Bank documentation.

Creating and editing H5P content elsewhere

In addition to the Content Bank, educators can create H5P content using external tools like the H5P.com site or the LUMI app for desktop (Windows, Mac, and Linux versions available). These tools offer features and options not available in Moodle’s Content Bank. In addition, CurrikiStudio is an open-source project that allows educators to create H5P content on a dedicated server. Like other external tools, content created in CurrikiStudio can be downloaded and uploaded to Moodle.

Organisations may choose to build their content using external tools to maintain full control over content creation and maintenance. Once the H5P content is created, it can be downloaded and uploaded to Moodle, either through the Content Bank, or as a H5P activity.

Please note that some H5P modules available in external tools may not have been officially released on h5p.org and may not work well in Moodle. Ensure compatibility before uploading content to your Moodle courses.

File upload limitations

When uploading H5P content to Moodle, be aware of file size limitations on your server. Course file size limits may prevent you from uploading large H5P files. Additionally, ensure that your Moodle server has the required H5P libraries installed for uploaded H5P activities to function properly.

Creating H5P resources from Moodle standard questions

With the Repurpose resources content type plugin , educators can convert Moodle standard questions into H5P resources. Currently supported resources include:

  • Single Choice Set
  • Dialogue Cards
  • Flash Cards

Once converted, these content types can be edited in the Content Bank and combined with other H5P content through copy and paste.

Adding an H5P activity to a Moodle Course

The H5P activity enables H5P content created in the Content bank , or an external site, to be easily added to a course as an activity. To add an H5P activity to your Moodle course, follow the steps outlined in Moodle’s H5P activity documentation.

H5P add an activity Image

Embedding H5P into other Activities

H5P content can be embedded into other Moodle activities and resources, such as Lessons or Books. To embed H5P content:

  • Click the H5P button in the editor.
  • Click ‘Browse repositories’ and select a H5P file from the Content Bank.
  • Choose whether to create a copy of the file or a shortcut.
  • Click ‘Insert H5P’.

H5P options Image

Creating a shortcut to the H5P file allows for easy updates and maintenance, as changes made in the Content Bank will automatically be reflected in linked activities.

Using H5P content in languages other than English

While Moodle’s Content Bank currently displays H5P module names and descriptions in English only, external tools like LUMI may offer translations for other languages. For more information on translating H5P content, refer to Moodle’s plugin translation documentation.

Admin settings for H5P Integration

To display H5P content in Moodle activities, the Display H5P filter must be enabled, and the URL (e.g., h5p.com) should be listed as an allowed source in Site admin / Plugins / Filters / Display H5P.

Manage H5P content types

Moodle administrators can manage H5P content types through Site administration / H5P / Manage H5P content types. This page allows admins to upload necessary files and libraries for H5P content types, as well as disable selected content types if desired.

H5P capabilities in Moodle

Moodle offers several H5P-related capabilities for different user roles including:

Add embedded H5P (default role: teacher) Set H5P display options (default role: teacher) Manage H5P content types (default role: manager) Deploy H5P content (default roles: manager and teacher)

Using H5P in Moodle allows educators to create engaging and interactive eLearning experiences. By leveraging the various H5P content types and tools available, educators can enhance their Moodle courses and provide a more dynamic eLearning environment.

Creating an H5P Course Presentation

With the H5P Course Presentation tool, you can create and present asynchronous educational material to your students with slides that incorporate multimedia and interactive features. This format enables you to assemble your course material in a dynamic and interactive way. Students can navigate through the slides, engaging with embedded quizzes and videos as they go. It's an effective alternative to traditional methods like PowerPoint slides, PDFs, or standard text-heavy web pages.

The H5P Course Presentation allows educators to create and present content in an engaging way, consistent with Active Learning principles. The Course Presentation can also be used for formative tasks to provide students with opportunities for self-assessment and consolidation of knowledge.

Exportable Text Areas in a H5P Course Presentation also offer a unique opportunity for students to engage with your content. These text areas can be embedded throughout the presentation, allowing students to record their reflections, ideas, notes, and answers to questions as they interact with it. Anything the student inputs in these fields will be collated into an individual summary that they can download as a Word document.

Moodle: Activities & Resources: H5P Interactive Content

H5P icon

H5P makes it easy to create, share, and reuse HTML5 content and applications. Content is responsive and mobile friendly, which means that users will experience the same rich, interactive content on computers, smartphones and tablets alike. With H5P, instructors can create and edit interactive videos, presentations, games, and more.

Considerations:

As you begin thinking about using these interactive activities, keep the following in mind:

  • While the application and activity is accessible, make sure that the  content  you add is also accessible.
  • Some activities allow for points (grades) and are added to the grade book. If you do  not  want the activity to be graded, you can set the maximum points or weight to zero, and then hide it in the grade book.

Add an H5P Activity to a Course

  • Log into  Moodle  and open your course.
  • Give your activity a name, and use the description area to post instructions for students.
  • In the H5P editor, you can choose from a list of activities.

Academic Technology

#40 - turn a presentation into an online interactive slide show.

  • Making more efficient use of face-to-face teaching time.
  • Supporting students' independent study when you are not teaching them face-to-face.
  • Providing fun and engaging activities to build student confidence.

Consider using H5P in Moodle, this tool includes a content type for interactive presentations, called Course Presentation. You can use this to build a series of slides, with images, text, audio and video. You can start from scratch or you can even export slides from PowerPoint or Keynote as images, and build the H5P presentation from them. Quiz questions and other interactive features can be embedded into the slide show. If used within Moodle, students' results from the activity are recorded in the module grade book. For information about the accessibility of H5P please see here Link opens in a new window

The Moodle Book allows you to embed activities, videos and links in the separate pages alongside any text and images. This can be a useful way to present bitesize chunks of information broken down into separate pages. The advantage of using this tool is that if you already know how to use Moodle then the editing options are the same. However on it's own the book is a fairly static resource and is lacking in interaction, other than the navigation between pages. To make it interactive you will need to consider creating activities elsewhere and embedding these or linking to these. A popular method is to create separate simple H5P activities in the same Moodle course space and then hide these but make them available. These activities can then be easily embedded in the pages of your book or elsewhere.

Interactive video is another option. Some tools including H5P, Echo 360 and MS Stream (Stream Classic) allow for some form of interaction such as adding a quick question, form of other interaction embedded in the video. The participant will usually need to complete an action (e.g. answer a question) before moving on. This can be a relatively quick way of adding interaction to an exiting video. It is likely to be more time-consuming if you are starting from scratch.:

A simple solution is to use individual activities and resources in Moodle. You might break your presentation down into a series of steps. For example you could present your introduction by video, audio or text. This could then be followed by an activity, or resource. You can embed H5P and other content in pages too. Further interaction might also come from one of the collaborative tools (e.g. glossary, Wiki) or from a forum task. If appropriate you could test understanding using a Moodle quiz.

  • Think about flipped classroom options. For example, could your material be read, watched, or listened to between or before class leaving more time for active participation and discussion during any synchronous session?
  • Can your resource be turned into a game or simulation?
  • A good design principle for accessibility is to use formats, tools, workflows and layouts that are familiar to the user already.

This process provides links to our guides , associated recipes and other online help . For further assistance or more information use the ' Get Help ' button above.

  • Plan your activity by deciding what students should know, understand or be able to do by the end of this active learning experience. Use a suitable learning design process (e.g. ABC learning design) to plan your presentation (aims, objectives, key learning points etc.).
  • H5P Interactive Presentation* Link opens in a new window
  • The Moodle Book and learn how to embed activities Link opens in a new window
  • Interactive video, choose: Echo 360 Link opens in a new window / MS Stream Link opens in a new window / H5P** Link opens in a new window * if you choose H5P you might consider creating your presentation in PowerPoint or Keynote first, as this is easier software in which to design slides, develop and test your content. This is especially useful if you then export these slides as images. You can leave spaces in your slides and presentation for interactive elements, such as quizzes, and for multimedia. ** H5P only allows certain video streaming services to be used (e.g. YouTube) otherwise MP4 video must be uploaded
  • Provide your students with a link to the materials and clear instructions on what to do and when to do it by (if required in advance of your class for example).
