First-year students are applying directly from high school and have not taken any military or college credits after graduating high school. Our typical first-year student has achieved a solid B average and has earned an above average SAT or ACT score.

Transfer students began their educational journey elsewhere and are ready to make a change to MU. Students are welcome to continue their path from a community college or 4-year institution.

Visiting students, also known as transient students, are currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student at another institution, but are interested in taking fewer than 12 credits at MU.

Millersville Continues Test-Optional Policy 

The admissions application for fall 2023 opens July 1.

Back in 2020, Millersville University decided to make SAT and ACT scores an optional part of the student application process in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the University is continuing this policy up through the fall semester of 2024, placing less emphasis on test scores and more on the general academic success of students seeking to apply.   

The University was the first school in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to make standardized test scores optional in 2014 as a part of the pilot program .    

“The SAT or ACT is just one measure of a student’s success and temporarily waiving the requirement removes that barrier for students to enter Millersville,” says Dr. Katy Charles, director of admissions. “In 2024, the University will review the success rates of students who entered without a standardized test score in order to make a decision about a permanent policy.”  

Applicants are asked to submit their high school transcript and an application essay. Like test scores, letters of recommendation are optional. “The most emphasis is put on how the student performed in their high school academics,” explains Charles.   

This good news comes just in time for current high school students looking to apply to Millersville University— the admissions application for fall 2023 opens July 1.   

Undergraduate Admissions hosts various programs for those beginning the college application process, those admitted to the University, and all students in between. The newly developed ‘Ville Preview Days were designed for high school juniors as a general overview of the University this past spring.   

In addition to a campus tour and presentations from individual academic departments, students who attended these Preview Days learned more about the college admissions process and financial aid. They could also talk to MU students about their college experiences. The intention is that as students may visit the University multiple times, they can experience different aspects of the University.   

While Preview Days are intended as broad overviews, Open Houses are more specific and intended for high school seniors who have already begun the college application process. These events have a full itinerary, including meetings with professors and a Q & A session with the University’s academic Deans. Open Houses will take place on September 24, October 15 and November 5.  

Campus visits are open now and are offered regularly through August. New student orientation for accepted students attending the University in the fall begins June 21.

Since it originated in 2001, the Millersville Robotics Team (@villerobotics) has won seven championships and 50 1st-3rd place individual awards. This summer, the team is gearing up to participate in the 31st annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition, which occurs from May 31 to June 3 at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. The team plans to compete with their latest design, A.Li.E.N. 5. 0 (Autonomous LiDAR-based Environment Navigator), a self-driving robot with object detection, GPS and lane line awareness.<br /> <br /> The IGVC is a robotics contest where college teams develop self-driving ground vehicles that navigate obstacles without human intervention. In the 2023 competition, only two teams, the University of Oklahoma and Millersville University, completed the AutoNav Course. Millersville achieved notable success, securing 1st place qualification, 2nd place in performance, and 2nd place overall in the AutoNav Class. Additionally, Millersville claimed 3rd place in the Grand Award, which considers results from both the AutoNav and Self-Drive class competitions.<br /> <br /> “We got second last year, so we made some new changes for this year’s IGVC competition in order to compete with other teams,” says Elizabeth Maschke, electrical lead and robotics team president and a manufacturing engineering technology major. “The reason we didn’t get first last year was because of speed, so our current ALiEN 5. 0 has been increased to the max speed that you can possibly have, legally within the IGVC competition parameters.”<br /> <br /> “I think the IGVC is the hardest in terms of computer control and most sophisticated in terms of writing code,” says Dr. John R. Wright Jr., professor of Automation and Electronics Technologies. Focuses on some of the major areas of scholarship related to the practice of writing: literacy practices; historical accounts of writing instruction; the relationship of classical rhetoric to contemporary writing; writing across the curriculum; studies of professional and workplace writing; computers and writing; social, political and economic dimensions of writing; and others. Explores games, board games, videogames and world building to broaden students’ understanding of writing, writing practices, and rhetoric. This course explores how the games we play help define our cultural identity and the way we approach lived experiences. This course will include writing practice, analytic practice, and production of games. Prereq: ENGL 110

Explores writing as a varied set of deliberate, artful choices in regard to designing and stylizing diverse persuasive texts, all crafted for specific audiences-emphasizing a mindful focus upon language for students at all levels of preparation. The course invites students to experience, in texts of all kinds, the interplay of argumentative structure and style that impacts readers: both rhetorical awareness and stylistic agility. This course will teach aspiring science writers and/ or scientists to effectively write about research for audiences both inside and outside of the sciences. The course will establish the premise that science is a social enterprise that, in addition to research acumen, requires rhetorical skill. Focusing on rhetorical skill, this class will analyze the communication strategies scientists and science writers use to argue for research findings, advocate public policy positions, and communicate risk. Students will consider how scientific texts address audiences, use key terms, and argue for their validity with quantitative and visual evidence. Students will also investigate how such specialized knowledge can be effectively and ethically accommodated for non-specialist audiences. Students will be encouraged to bring their own research interests into class projects to draw from and develop their voice as an expert. Explores the context and effect of persuasive strategies as seen through the lens of a particular topic or period of history. Provides advanced examination of rhetorical principles relevant to the topic.

Classical and modern theories of rhetoric and their application to the teaching of writing. Effective instructional methods and materials will be examined. Offered periodically.

Focus upon the rhetoric(s) of professional communication within the contexts of students' own on-the-job writing: how to thoughtfully select language, visual and audial texts, and deliberately designed formats to accommodate writers' intentions as creative problem-solvers and to meet the needs of diverse audiences. This course is designed for both practicing professionals and working people aspiring to new professional positions. In a workshop format and, at times, working in teams, students will compose modes of discourse typical of professional writing, including but not limited to electronic and/or print ad copy, web content, brochures, non-profit pamphlets, letters, informal reports, formal reports, promotional campaigns, and/or recommendations; social media writing for websites, wikis and blogs; students' own websites, wikis, and blogs.

Gain a rhetorical and theoretical understanding of how texts operate in our increasingly sophisticated online media culture. Examine these new media texts as they appear on the Internet with a particular emphasis on social media as well as old media that is being transformed by/in/to the digital. Learn to follow these processes of text (re)mediation as they take place through perceptual and temporal processes, movement, and memory.

Focuses on the theory and practice of community literacy and citizen engagement in the community. Emphasizes research on community literacy and action-oriented projects meeting community literacy needs.

Exploration of theories and practices of creative non-fiction, including but not limited to memoirs, profiles, histories, biographies, travel literature, blogging, and nature writing in diverse modes (print, digital,& visual) for diverse audiences and purposes.

Reading between the lines: application essays predict university success

Analysis of more than 40,000 university application essays found that gradual transitions between chunks of text correlated with higher marks. Credit: Dusan Stankovic/Getty
