Doctoral Funding

About doctoral funding.

The Doctoral degree at UJ develops the intellectual, research and professional skills of the student. At UJ we provide doctoral programmes that are intense, challenging and stimulating within a heightened learning environment, thereby creating an intellectually rewarding experience. UJ Doctoral graduates are recognised experts who have made distinctive contributions in their fields.

The Postgraduate School (PGS) provides support to the University of Johannesburg’s Doctoral students. This is done through the Postgraduate Funding Management (PFM) area. PFM is responsible for communicating the various postgraduate funding options made available at UJ for Doctoral level of study.

Doctoral students are funded from internal and external funds in order for them to successfully complete their qualifications. Scholarships that are offered under internal funding are categorized as Global Excellence Stature with the research focus on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and URC funds. URC funds have various sub-categories and are listed as UJ-Commonwealth, URC International, Supervisor-Linked (SLB) bursaries and Special URC. SLB bursaries are available for both the part-time and full-time students.

PFM has embarked on reaching our success plan by increasing number of postgraduate students. Funding for doctoral students are crucial to the university’s goals, hence external funders are assisting the university in reaching these goals. External funders are National Research Foundation (NRF), Department of Science and Innovation and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (DSI-CSIR), Duke CE, Organisation for Women in Science (OWSD) and various Sector of Education and Training Authority (SETA) organisations. Students can only apply when the call for these scholarships is out.

Introduction.

South Africa's National Development Plan (NDP) outlines the need for strategic approaches to drive the country towards a competitive knowledge society and develop the required human capacity in key areas. Central to a highly productive, globally connected economy are high-level skills and extensive participation in research scholarship. The Nelson Mandela University Vision 2030 Strategy highlights the institution's aspiration to invest in the attraction, development and retention of socially diverse, research active postgraduate students to promote talent continuity, research productivity and academic excellence. Nelson Mandela University will be implementing a new postgraduate funding policy in 2023 which seeks to advance social justice, equality and inclusion by providing postgraduate funding as a lever to address the challenges of inequity of access, success and throughput, in an ongoing effort to represent excellence. Citizenship, gender and disability are considered in the allocation of funding, with transformation of the postgraduate cohort as the core objective. Financial need is included as a criterion for determining the level of funding.

In order to develop a future cohort of researchers and scholars, it is vital that postgraduate students complete their studies without delay and that they continue through to completion of their doctoral studies. To advance these priorities, financially needy students, students living with a disability, and outstanding academic achievers who gain admission into postgraduate programmes will be funded without interruption from the honours to the doctoral degree level, subject to satisfactory performance at each consecutive postgraduate level. To attract and retain a diverse range of students, funding levels cover the full cost of study for students who meet the required criteria. This approach is aligned with the national postgraduate funding landscape and will enhance synergy between undergraduate and postgraduate funding. This framework document outlines the context and operational procedures for the Postgraduate Research Scholarships (PGRS) and should be read in conjunction with the policy on masters and doctoral degrees (IRC 403.01).

Eligibility Criteria

PGRS funding is open to South African citizens, permanent residents and international candidates who intend to undertake full-time honours, masters and doctoral studies at Nelson Mandela University in the 2023 academic year. Additional eligibility criteria applicable to first-time applicants for honours, masters and doctoral funding and extension support applicants for masters and doctoral studies are listed in section 3 of the attached Call framework document .

Application Process

Students must first identify the honours, masters or doctoral programme they want to be enrolled in for their postgraduate degree and apply for admission before applying for PGRS funding. Applications for funding in 2024 must be submitted on the PGRS Online Submission System by accessing the link https://apps.mandela.ac.za/pgrs . The closing date for 2023 scholarship applications is Tuesday, 31 October 2023 . The supporting documents to be attached to the application are listed in the attached Call framework document .

Funding Principles

This scholarship programme aims to attract, nurture and retain outstanding academic achievers in the system to pursue postgraduate studies up to the doctoral level. PGRS funding will be allocated in line with the following transformation targets:

• 90% South African citizens and permanent residents
• 10% students from SADC countries and beyond

The South African Citizens and permanent residents’ targets are further disaggregated in terms of race and disability as follows:

• 75% Black (African, Coloured, and Indian)
• 1% students living with a disability

Doctoral Scholarships

The NIHSS collaborates annually with the South African Humanities Deans Association (SAHUDA) to extend 150 scholarships per annum to full-time PhD students based at South African universities. The main objective of this programme is to promote scholarship and address inequities in the humanities and social sciences. To ensure that successful applicants are provided with structured intellectual and mentorship support, the NIHSS-SAHUDA cooperation has created an ambitious national doctoral programme for the humanities and social sciences. The NIHSS Strategic Plan for 2015 - 2020 sets a target of 900 South African students partaking in Doctoral Schools by 2020. The NIHSS Doctoral Programme thus serves to advance postgraduate scholarship through a variety of innovations, including:

• Providing scholarships for postgraduate students studying in the humanities and social sciences;
• Strengthening a student-centred culture in the higher education system and helping to create an environment where the critical, analytical and normative capacities of students are enhanced;
• Ensuring collaborative supervision of doctoral students by two or more universities, which could include South African universities collaborating with universities outside the borders of South Africa; and
• Addressing inequities with regard to the demographic composition of PhD holders.

Stellenbosch University aims to become Africa's leading research-intensive university, globally recognised as excellent, inclusive and innovative, where we advance knowledge in service of society. Full and Partial ​​Scholarships are available based on criteria set  per faculty . International students may also apply. 

All scholarship awards will be made on the condition that the applicant meets all of the requirements of the scholarship as well as the admission requirements of the relevant degree programme. 

The Stellenbosch University Postgraduate Scholarship Programme (PSP) is one of our flagship scholarship programmes. It aims to support our vision of becoming a leading research-intensive University by supporting a pool of emerging research talent amongst our postgraduate students. Please note that there are two separate application processes – your application for postgraduate study and your application for this scholarship programme.

The Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (Rsif) PhD Scholarships 2024 (Fully Funded)

Application Deadline: 16 th  September 2024 at 5:00 pm  (East Africa Time; UTC+3)

The Partnership for skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET) i s an African-led initiative that aims to close the skills gap in the applied sciences, engineering and technology (ASET) necessary for socio-economic transformation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (Rsif) is the flagship program of PASET. Rsif supports PhD students, post-doctoral scientists and universities in SSA to establish high-quality training, research and innovation environments and to develop institutional capacity for the benefit of the whole region.

The scholarships available for this call are 20. Of these, 16 will be awarded to Kenyan nationals based on PASET’s 80/20 rule for contributing countries, and 4 will be awarded to nationals of other countries in sub–Saharan Africa.

The duration of the PhD Scholarship is 3 to 4 years, within which time, the scholar undertakes a 6-12 months ‘sandwich’ placement at an international partner university, research institute or private company.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible applicants must:

• Be a citizen of any country in sub-Saharan Africa.
• Have a relevant master’s degree related to the Rsif fields of study.
• Meet the specific admission requirements of the Rsif AHU that hosts the PhD program.
• Be 35 years of age and below at the date of application.
• Be willing to enrol full-time in a PhD program at an Rsif AHU in the 2024-2025 academic year.
• Should not be holding another PhD scholarship when applying to the Rsif PhD scholarship.
• Be willing to spend 6-12 months in a ‘sandwich’ training at an international partner university, research institute or private company.
• Be willing to work on a research topic that aligns with and contributes to national or regional development in Africa.
• Priority for the scholarships will be given to women and existing young academic faculty who do not have a PhD.
• University tuition fee and research costs.
• A monthly allowance to cover living expenses such as accommodation and meals while at the Rsif AHU and while on a sandwich placement at an International Partner Institute.
• Return travel from home country to the Rsif AHU.
• Return travel from the Rsif AHU to the International Partner Institute
• Visas and student permits.
• Annual medical and personal accident insurance.

The PASET Rsif PhD scholarship  does not cover :

• Extra support for family members/ dependents, including children and spouses.
• Additional return tickets to the home country for personal reasons.
• Application costs to AHUs including certifying and equating of certificates

Canon Collins Trust Sol Plaatje Scholarships 2025 for Postgraduate Study in South Africa (Fully Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2025 Canon Collins Trust Sol Plaatje Scholarships. Canon Collins Trust in partnership with Sol Plaatje Educational Project invite applications for the postgraduate study in South Africa 2025. The program will provide funding for up to a maximum of two years for Masters and three years for PhD. Continued funding depends upon satisfactory progress and academic reports.

In 2025, the program will be making awards only to those studying in three areas:

Eligibility Requirements

INTERACT-Africa PhD and MSc Scholarships 2024/2025 for Africans.

INTERACT-Africa is an Intra-Africa Academic mobility project funded by the European Union (EU). The project focuses on Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology, with emphasis on conversion of organic waste to valuable bioproducts for transitioning into environmental sustainable and socially inclusive economies.

INTERACT-Africa  aims at :

• Promoting inclusive learning mobility opportunities by enhancing capacity building of HEIs by focusing on training and education in green Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology aimed at developing a skilled workforce capable of implementing sustainable practices
• Fostering entrepreneurship and support the establishment of green technology businesses in Africa by providing mentorship, access to funding, and technical support to aspiring entrepreneurs and start-ups working in the field of green Chemistry, Biology and Information technology
• Facilitating networking and knowledge sharing among businesses to promote innovation and sustainable economic growth through provision of internships, cooperative education programs, and hands-on learning opportunities.

Scholarship Period

INTERACT-Africa is offering 28 postgraduate scholarships for the degree seeking mobility. 5 scholarships for the PhD and 23 for Masters programmes.

• For PhD students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 36 months.
• For MSc students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 24 months.

Eligibility criteria

• The candidate must meet minimum requirement for admission into Masters and PhD programmes as stipulated by the host University Senate/regulating body.
• Provide proof that the candidate is a national of and residence of an eligible country.
• Student beneficiaries must be of African nationality and residing in Africa at the time of application.
• All interested candidates must submit a research concept paper in the intended area of study (1 page, Times New Roman, single spacing).
• Applicants will not be allowed to participate in the mobility without an admission letter from the host university.
• Applicants to declare not to have already benefited from a previous student scholarship under the projects selected in the framework of the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2022-2027.
• Applicants to commit not to benefit from another EU funded scholarship scheme to implement the same activity during their Intra-Africa mobility period.
• Provide motivation letter reflecting innovative technologies in climate change and mitigation.
• Recommendation letters and/ reference letters (two). One from an academic advisor or professor/lecturer.
• Applicant must be willing to study not in his/her country but within the eligible countries
• Provide proof of Special needs where applicable
• Applicants from Non – – English level B2 Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) or its equivalent is mandatory to study in the institutions that use English as the language of instruction.
• To study at Institut Facultaire Des Sciences Agronomiques De Yangambi (IFA-YANGAMBI), French level B2 or its equivalent is mandatory
• Tuition fees and research costs for the duration of the study.
• Comprehensive health and accident insurance cover
• Monthly stipend/allowance of Euro 1,230 per month for PhD and 890 per month for the Masters.
• PhD students will receive a monthly stipend of 1230 Euros. This also includes (1) travel cost to and from the host institution, (2) Visa costs, and (3) settling allowance.
• MSc students will receive a monthly stipend of 890 Euros. This also includes (1) travel cost to and from the host institution, (2) Visa costs, and (3) settling allowance.

• The language of instruction varies with the project hosting institution/country i.e., English for Moi University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Addis Ababa University and Sokoine University of Agriculture.

  France Excellence Doctoral Scholarships Program 2024 for Central Africans to study in France.

Application Deadline: February 19, 2024  .

Scholarships for the year 2024 are open for students at the University of Bangui to complete a Doctorate in a French or African university. For the Doctorate or Post-Doctorate level, students registered or in the process of registering for a thesis in a French, Cameroonian or Senegalese university can apply.

The eligibility criteria are as follows:

• Be of Central African nationality and resident in the Central African Republic
• Be aged 45 or less
• Be a lecturer or temporary or tenured teacher at the University of Bangui
• Present a solid and relevant research project
• Be registered in the first year of thesis in 2023-2024 at the latest.

Dorcas Muthoni PhD Fellowship 2024 for talented African Females (Funded to Barcelona, Spain)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Dorcas Muthoni PhD Fellowship. The Dorcas Muthoni PhD Fellowship is a tribute to our Doctor Honoris Causa Dorcas Muthoni.  Dorcas Muthoni, a Kenyan engineer and entrepreneur, CEO and founder of the company Openworld, received the University’s highest recognition on 15th December 2017 for her significant work in the promotion of engineering studies among young women in Africa, the mentoring of young people, and her social commitment in the fight against poverty.  This PhD fellowship seeks doctoral applications from talented African female students (only African nationality applicants will be considered) with strong research interests. Candidates for PhD positions must hold an M.Sc degree or equivalent. 

The Dorcas Muthoni PhD scholarship is aligned with the university institutional commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), it aims to contribute to quality education and gender equality, with a focus on African Women. The first edition of this PhD Fellowship was opened in 2018, and the second in 2020. We are pleased to launch our third edition for 2024. The main objectives of this fellowship are: 

• To promote gender equality & contribute to reduce the gender gap in ICT; by facilitating more women pursuing scientific/technological/engineering careers and lowering the barriers women face when pursuing careers in STEM disciplines
• To share excellent research with African female researchers during their PhD Studies.  Our ICT department  consists of  more than 20 research groups  who are very active in international research projects and nationally we are the only Engineering university department in Spain to have been awarded for a second time the Spanish research excellence seal Maria de Maeztu. The  Maria de Maeztu Strategic Research Program  is a 4 year research initiative funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness to promote artificial and natural intelligence for ICT and beyond within not only our Engineering ICT department, but our university. 
• To contribute to future social impact in African countries. The applicants are expected to return to their African home country after completion of their PhD studies in order to pursue a career related to ICT there. 

Research Areas

Students will pursue doctoral studies in one of the ICT  Research Areas  of the department which includes: Cognition, Computation and Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Theoretical Computer Science, Natural Language Processing, Ubiquitous Computing, Information Retrieval and Data Mining, Cognitive Multimedia Technologies, Image Processing and Computer Vision, Sound and Music Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics and Educational Technologies, Network Technologies and Strategies, Wireless Communications, Cybersecurity, Information Theory and Coding, Computational Neuroscience, Instrumentation and Biomedical Electronics, Computational Imaging and Computational Physiology, Analysis of Biomedical Data and Non-Linear Signal Analysis.

 The university offers a predoctoral contract with a minimum gross monthly salary of 1.470,98€ for the 1st and 2nd year, and a gross monthly salary of 1.576,05€ for the 3rd year.  Teaching.  PRC includes a teaching assistance load of  45  hours per academic year.  These teaching hours are a compulsory pre-requisite  to be able to enter the fellowship selection process.  Start-up Fund.  The fellowship will also include a startup/Landing Fund to facilitate the fellow’s initial expenditure. The fund will be for the amount of 2500€.

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme (GOI-IES) 2024 for study in Ireland (Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme.

The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) programme supports high-calibre international students who wish to study at master’s or PhD level in Ireland  [1] . The programme is funded by the Government of Ireland in partnership with Irish higher education institutions and managed by the Higher Education Authority. Under the initiative, 60 scholarships are awarded each year for one year of full-time study at master’s or PhD level. The programme is open to applicants studying in any field.

Eligibility

• In order to be eligible for a Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship, applicants must have a domiciliary of origin outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland/ United Kingdom.
• Candidates will need to apply for admission to a relevant master’s or PhD programme offered by an eligible higher education institution as per that institution’s admission procedures.
• Applicants must have a conditional or final offer of admission to that higher education institution at the time of application and will be required to submit a copy of same.
• The offer letter must confirm that the student has been offered a place on a full-time programme as an international fee-paying student.
• A Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship consists of a stipend amounting to €10,000 for one year of full-time study at master’s or PhD level. 
• The awardees’ host higher education institutions are required to give a full fee waiver to the awardees for the year of their scholarship. Successful scholars will be expected to commence their studies in either September or October 2024.

The Cambridge Africa Changemakers Scholarship 2024 for PhD students (Fully Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Cambridge Africa Changemakers Scholarship. The Cambridge Africa Changemakers Scholarship is a programme of full-cost scholarships for PhD students in any subject, open to candidates from any country in Africa. It is tenable at any college.

It aims to provide support to talented students who require financial assistance to take up their places at the University. Priority will be given to students whose research contributes to the development of the Continent and to climate-resilient and sustainable futures for Africa and the world. 

This scholarship programme is closely affiliated with the  Mastercard Foundation scholars programme .

Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2024 for Candidates from Developing Countries to study in Belgium (Funded)

With support from its “ Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University (‘North’) and half at a university in a developing country (‘South’). Ghent University only finances the part of the research that will be carried out in Ghent (24 months). The candidate must have full-time funding for the other 24 months of research to be carried out in the South.

• Candidates need to come from – and have the nationality of – one of the selected developing countries (see  country list );
• The proposals must be jointly submitted by a candidate, a supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University and a supervisor at the partner university (South);
• No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless  preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development;
• Only degree students (students who intend to obtain a (joint ) PhD degree at Ghent University) can apply. Exchange students cannot apply for this scholarship; 
• This program is meant for students at the beginning of their PhD. To a limited extent, PhD students are allowed to have already completed preliminary research. At the time the fellowship starts (1/10/2024), a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research must still be required to complete the PhD;
• Ghent university wants to encourage more female researchers to apply for this scholarship. That is why a Ghent University supervisor can support maximum 2 candidates per call on condition they are both of a different gender.
• PhD scholarship at Ghent University  (in total 24 months).

Funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. They offer PhD scholars studying at eligible universities across the Commonwealth the opportunity to conduct research at an institute in the UK for 12 months.

Purpose: 

• To widen access to UK equipment and expertise for high quality doctoral candidates from low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries, and to contribute to UK and Commonwealth higher education and research through collaboration and partnerships.

Intended   beneficiaries:  

• High-quality graduates whose proposed research has a developmental focus and who have the potential to become influential teachers or researchers in their home countries.

To apply for these Scholarships, prospective Scholars must:

• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
• Be registered for a PhD at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country by the time your Scholarship starts (September 2023)
• Ensure that an institutional or departmental link exists between your home university and your proposed UK university. This link must be greater than simply a collaboration between individuals – see section on ‘Tenure and placement’ for further details. Applications for Commonwealth PhD scholarships for the 2023/24 academic year are now open. The scholarships are for study in the UK beginning in September/October 2024.

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for applicants from least developed countries and fragile States, as classified by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), in the Commonwealth,  for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) provides the UK government scholarship scheme led by international development objectives. It operates within the framework of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and offers a vivid demonstration of the UK’s enduring commitment to the Commonwealth. By attracting individuals with outstanding talent and identifiable potential from all backgrounds and supporting them to become leaders and innovators on returning to their home countries, the CSC’s work combines sustainable development with the UK national interest and provides opportunities for international partnerships and collaboration.

Purpose:  Funded by the  UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) , Commonwealth PhD scholarships contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by supporting research that will have a developmental impact. They also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international applicants and encouraging links and collaboration, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Intended beneficiaries:  Commonwealth PhD scholarships are for high-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

Applicant eligibility

To apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Be available to start academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2024.
• By September 2024, hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second-class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)*.
• Not be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university or in their home country before September/October 2024.
• Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.
• Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format.

Financial assistance

Each scholarship provides:

• Approved airfare from the Scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of the award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before the award is confirmed).
• Approved tuition fees: full fees are covered by agreement between the CSC and the UK university, and Scholars are not liable to pay for any part of the tuition fee.
• Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,347 per month, or £1,652 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at current levels).
• Warm clothing allowance, where applicable.
• Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
• Provision towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (the cost of one economy class return airfare to the fieldwork location), where approved.
• Paid mid-term visit (airfare) to the Scholar’s home country, unless they have claimed or intend to claim spouse and/or child allowances during their scholarship or have received a return airfare to their home country for fieldwork.
• If a Scholar is accompanied by their spouse but no children: spouse allowance of £290 per month for a maximum period of nine months, if they and their spouse are living together at the same address in the UK (unless the spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply).
• If a Scholar is accompanied by their spouse and children: spouse allowance of £290 per month and child allowance of £290 per month for the first child, and £143 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if their spouse and children are living with them at the same address in the UK (unless their spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply).
• If a Scholar is accompanied by their children but no spouse: child allowance of £576.61 per month for the first child, and £143 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if their children are living with them at the same address in the UK.

Application Procedure

There are three types of nominating agency for PhD Scholarships:

• National nominating agencies  – this is the main route of application
• Selected universities/university bodies  – which can nominate their own academic staff
• Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies

Nominating agencies put forward scholarship candidates to the CSC for consideration.  The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships.

Each nominating agency oversees its own selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria.  Applicants must check with the nominating agency for their specific advice and rules for applying, and their own eligibility criteria.

Nominating agencies may set their own closing dates for applications.

Agencies will nominate scholarship candidates to the CSC by December 2023.

The France–South Africa Scholarship Programme 2023/2024 for Southern Africans to study in France (Fully Funded)

Application Deadline:  16 October 2023 at 23:59 SA time.

The France – South Africa Scholarship Programme is directed to South African students who intend to study in universities or higher education institutions in France for their   Master’s degree or PhD.

The programme is also open to students from Lesotho and Malawi.

The next call for applications is open for students who intend to start their studies in France in  September 2024.  Applicants will be contacted individually as needed. The list of the laureates and the waiting list will be announced according to the indicated timeline. Follow-up requests by applicants will not be answered.

Due to the differences between the Southern and Northern hemisphere calendars, laureates will follow a specific programme in South Africa from February 2024 to July 2024. This track will include online French courses organized by the network of the Alliances Françaises. It may also include an internship in French Companies and organisations based in South Africa, depending on the opportunities and the profile of each laureate.

Eligible study programmes

The study programmes eligible for the France South Africa scholarship programme are masters or PhD programmes in a French higher education institution located in France.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the France – South Africa Scholarship Programme, applicants must be:

• Born on or after 1 st  January 1994.
• A citizen of South Africa, Lesotho or Malawi.
• Enrolled in a French Higher Education institution (in due time) to pursue a Master’s degree or PhD.

The scholarship is granted for a given period to be spent in France,  matching the necessary time required to obtain the degree :

• For Master’s degree, the scholarship will be granted for a duration between 10 and 22 months. Master degree programmes are two years long. In some specific cases (Bachelor degree with Honours, for example), students may consider applying directly to M2 (second-year of the Master Programme). Only the hosting higher education institution is responsible for the admission. At the end of the first academic year, the Embassy of France will verify the success of the student to continue her/his studies in the second year of the Master’s programme.
• For PhDs, the scholarship will be granted for a maximum duration of 3 years. However, at the end of each academic year, in order to get the renewal of his/her grant, the recipient will have to justify the progress of their research work.
• In case of a PhD under co-supervision/cotutelle, periods of stay in France should be specified in a timeline. The scholarship will only be granted for the periods spent in France.
• For PhD and Master Degrees, if the curriculum requires course work which will take place outside of France, then applicants must specify all the details and his/her intentions, during the application process.

Scholarship types

Two schemes are possible under the France – South Africa Scholarship Programme:

A  full scholarship  by the Embassy of France. It includes:

• The status of a France Excellence scholarship holder which includes social security, priority for accessing student housing, visa fee exemption and assistance offered by Campus France Paris.
• A return flight ticket to France.
• A monthly allowance (approximately 850 euros for Master students and 1400 euros for PhD students).
• An additional individualized accommodation aid (approximately 150 euros/month) can be obtained from the French Government via the CAF.

In the second scheme of a  cost sharing scholarship , the monthly allowance will be provided fully or partially by a partner (a partner among the Advisory Board, a company, a higher education institution or any other funding agency). All the other benefits of a full scholarship will still be provided by the Embassy of France. This scheme can be proposed by the candidate during the application process  or by the Advisory Board for some of the laureates . In this last case, preselected applicants must comply with the instructions by the French Embassy in order to secure the co-funding.

Applicants are highly encouraged to look for other sources of financing from his/her own local or French higher education institution but also from private sector companies. Specific attention will be given to applicants who have found other sources of financing for their academic project. Nevertheless, the commitment of the parents or a family business is not considered as a co-funding.

At all times, applicants or laureates must inform the Embassy of France if they obtain any additional funding.

NRF-DAAD In-Country Scholarship Postgraduate (Masters and Ph.D.) Scholarships 2023/2024 for young South African Graduates (Fully Funded)

Together with the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa, the DAAD awards funding for Master and PhD degrees at South African Universities to South Africans citizens or permanent South African residents as part of its In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme.

The NRF-DAAD In-Country Scholarship is jointly awarded by the DAAD and the  NRF  to full-time Master and PhD students in South Africa in all fields of study at any South African university.

• A South African citizenship or a permanent South African residency is a requirement for the scholarship. Applicants must be 30 (Masters) or  32 (PhD) years of age or younger in the year of application.
• The NRF minimum academic requirement for postgraduate funding is 65%.
• The scholarships are intended to support honours, master’s and doctoral candidates to pursue studies in all areas of  Science, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences, and Humanities .
• Successful applicants will be funded either at  Full Cost of Study (FCS)  or  Partial Cost of Study (PCS) .
• The FCS funding will be awarded to South African citizens and Permanent Residents only, who are either  financially needy  (i.e., those whose combined household family income is less than or equals to R350 000 per annum),  living with a disability  or  exceptional academic achievers . However, the PCS funding will be awarded to  5% of international students  including South African citizens and Permanent Residents who could not be funded under FCS, but meet other minimum requirements for the NRF scholarship funding criteria.

The  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation  ( MAECI )  offers grants   in favor of  foreign citizens* and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)**  for the  academic year 2023-24  in order to foster international cooperation in cultural, scientific and technological fields, to promote Italian language and culture and to support Italy’s economic system in the world (according to Law 288/55 and its subsequent changes and additions).

Grants are offered to complete study courses and research/training programs in public or legally recognized Italian educational institutions.

• Academic qualifications

Applications must only be submitted by foreign and Italian students living abroad (IRE)* holding an  appropriate academic qualification required to enroll to the Italian University/Institute  (more information on:  https://studyinitaly.esteri.it/en/Recognition-of-qualification ).

• Age requirements

Applicants for  Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programmes/ Italian Language and Culture advanced Courses  should have attained the age of majority and shall

They are also required to provide the admission letter to the PhD from the relevant Italian University. 

4. Research projects under academic supervision (Progetti in co-tutela)

Grants for a research under academic supervision are awarded for a  period of study of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months.

This type of grants can be awarded to research projects carried out at Italian Research Institutions  (i.e. Italian Research Council – CNR, Italian National Institute of Health – ISS, Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics – INFN, Italian National Institute for Astrophysics – INAF, The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – ISPRA, and others), public or recognized Universities, Museums and Archives.

Applicants must submit a research project, with the name and contacts (e-mail address) of their supervisor, and provide the invitation/acceptance letter from the host University/Institute.

WIKIAFRICA EDUCATION – HIGHER EDUCATION INITIATIVE

In collaboration with the Aurora Foundation, MAECI grantees from the African continent, speakers of African languages, ​​are offered the opportunity to take part in the WikiAfrica Higher Education Initiative. The program promotes the active participation of students with the aim of making specialized information on Africa available online. The initiative is developed by the Moleskine Foundation in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation and the Aurora Foundation.

HEALTH AND MEDICAL INSURANCE

Grantees will be covered by a collective health and medical insurance, contracted by MAECI, in case of illness or accident. The insurance is valid exclusively for the duration of the grant.

The winner of a MAECI scholarship, based on the starting date of the grant and the number of months indicated in the “Dichiarazione di assegnazione di borsa di studio” (Awarding Letter), will receive a monthly  amount of 900 euros  paid periodically every two or every three months to the personal current account, opened in his/her name, with an Italian banking Institution.

The Wits-Edinburgh Sustainable African Futures (WESAF) Doctoral Scholarship Programme 2023 for Young Africans

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Edinburgh (UoE) inaugurated the  Wits-Edinburgh Sustainable African Futures  (WESAF) Doctoral Programme, in partnership with the  Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program  – a global initiative that enables learning and leadership development for talented young people, primarily young Africans, who face the highest barriers to accessing higher education. The  WESAF doctoral programme  aims to build sustainable development-focussed, interdisciplinary research capacity in partner higher education institutions in Africa.

The programme will recruit an initial cohort of 50 students from faculties from partner African higher education institutions to complete sustainability focused doctoral studies. Following an initial online Masters by Research, to front-load the development of critical research skills and delivered full time, at least 30 of these students will continue to complete PhDs either full-time or part-time. Through its cohort approach and emphasis on advanced research design and methods training, the programme will produce a powerful cohort of African research specialists committed to addressing Africa’s sustainability challenges on its own terms.

Eligibility The target group for scholarships is emerging researchers and academics who meet the requirements to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh.

Imperial College London Shawki Saad PhD Scholarships 2023/2024 for PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa (Fully Funded)

Imperial College London has launched a new scholarship programme to support PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa.

The scholarship  will be for students joining the  Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering  and is supported by an endowed gift from the late Professor Shawki Saad, a Professor of Civil Engineering at Khartoum University in Sudan.

The programme will support four students and will fully cover the cost of tuition fees and support students with a stipend and travel costs. The new scholarship programme builds on a previous scholarship for students from Sudan.

The new scholarship programme was announced alongside a student prize for sustainability-related research in sub-Saharan Africa. The student prize and scholarship will help College efforts to tackle global systemic challenges in engineering and sustainability.

• This scholarship is open to research projects in areas including: Transport, Fluid Mechanics, Environmental and Water Resources, Structures, Systems, Materials, and Geotechnics.
• The Shawki Saad PhD Scholarship is a fully funded programme to support students ordinarily resident in Sub-Saharan Africa. The programme is funded by a generous endowed gift from the late Professor Shawki Saad, with one scholarship awarded each year for the next four years.

Within the framework of academic cooperation and student mobility between France and Ghana for the 2023-2024 academic year, the French Embassy in Ghana is partnering with Scholarships Secretariat to offer full scholarships to Ghanaian students at Master’s and PhD levels on a merit and needs basis.

The eligibility criteria for 2023-2024 are as follows:

• Applicants must be of Ghanaian nationality.
• Age limit: Master’s degree = 35 years; PhD = 40 years for joint application, 45 years for ScholSec application alone.

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), the Federal Government agency with the mandate of developing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the Overseas MSc and PhD scholarships to specific programmes at selected institutions under its PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The scheme was developed to offer candidates the opportunity to benefit from a diversified pool of knowledge and the facilities offered by world-class institutions across the globe. Under it, candidates are invited to apply through PTDF to specific programmes at partner institutions. The award includes the provision of flight tickets, payment of health insurance, payment of tuition and bench fees  (where applicable) , and the provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses.

The International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) PhD Scholarships 2023 in tax and development.

The International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) is a research centre aiming to improve tax policy and administration in lower-income countries through collaborative research and engagement. The ICTD’s primary base is the  Institute of Development Studies  (IDS), at the  University of Sussex  in Brighton (UK). The ICTD is funded by the British and Norwegian governments and by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

• To be eligible for funding, PhD projects should focus on taxation in African and/or south Asian countries.
• Within the broad area, candidates can focus on any issue of their own interest.
• While projects do not need to fall within one of our existing research programmes, candidates may find it helpful to review the research portfolio of the ICTD 
• The ICTD will fund up to four PhD students from countries in Africa and South Asia to start in September 2023. Students will receive full scholarships including university fees, a stipend in line with UK research council funding ( currently 17,668 GBP per year ), and other benefits such as funds to attend conferences, to cover visa costs and part of relocation expenses.
• In addition to financial support, successful applicants will benefit from being fully embedded in the ICTD team and networks. As such, they are expected to play an active role in the life of the Centre, for example by participating in team and research meetings, external events, and by contributing to blogs or papers for ICTD publications series.
• Successful candidates will be based at IDS or a department of the University of Sussex.
• At least one of their supervisors will be an ICTD Fellow.
• They will be expected to spend at least the first and third year at IDS/Sussex in person, to facilitate connections with the ICTD team and participation in training opportunities.

• Academic quality of the research proposal . Some of the elements that the reviewers will consider, amongst others, are: is the topic relevant to policy and research? Is it sufficiently linked to existing knowledge? Are the methods appropriate and robust? Is the proposed study feasible?
• Candidates’ profiles, including skills and experience.  Preference will be given to candidates with relevant work experience. A good result in a Master’s degree is also essential for admission to the PhD programme at Sussex/IDS.
• Fit with supervisors’ and ICTD’s research interests.  Availability of supervisors with relevant research interests and knowledge of relevant methods. We will also consider how projects complement ICTD’s research portfolio.

Applicants are  not  required to have submitted an application for a PhD place at the University of Sussex before applying for the ICTD scholarship, nor to have identified a potential supervisor. ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship 2023 for students/scholars from developing countries

According to an agreement between the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS/UNESCO) for the advancement of science in developing countries, up to 40 students/scholars from developing countries will be sponsored to study in China for doctoral degrees for up to 4 years.

The ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents (hereinafter referred to as  the ANSO Scholarship ) was formally launched in 2019 with the goal of training and cultivating young scientists from all over the world. The ANSO Scholarship supports 200 Master’s students and 300 PhD students every year to pursue postgraduate education at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) or institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) around China.

This year, a sub-category of the ANSO Scholarship: the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship is being officially launched. Echoing the priority of TWAS/UNESCO, special (not exclusive) consideration will be given to two target groups:  Least Development Countries (LDCs) and women . Up to 40 PhD students from developing countries in the South will be selected by TWAS/UNESCO into this category every year.

CAS, the leading founding member of ANSO, is the major sponsor of the ANSO Scholarship. TWAS and UNESCO, both founding members of ANSO, provide part of the funding for the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship awardees. ANSO welcomes all members and parties who are interested in creating a more diversified scholarship program together.

TaiwanICDF’s International Higher Education (Undergraduate, Masters and PhD) Scholarship Program 2023/2024 for study in Taiwan (Fully Funded)

The TaiwanICDF provides scholarships for higher education and has developed undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. programs in cooperation with renowned partner universities in Taiwan. The TaiwanICDF has established the Taiwan International Cooperation Alliance (TICA) with 22 partner universities, setting up an operational platform under this TICA framework to manage and improve the scholarship program. In 2023, there are 33 programs offered for TaiwanICDF Scholarship application.

• Be a citizen of a country on the List of Countries Eligible for TaiwanICDF Scholarship, and satisfy any specific criteria established by his or her country and/or government of citizenship.
• Neither be a national of the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor an overseas compatriot student.
• Satisfy the admission requirements of the partner university to which he or she has applied to study under a TaiwanICDF scholarship.
• Be able to satisfy all requirements for a Resident Visa (Code: FS) set by the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) set by the Ministry of the Interior, of the ROC (Taiwan) government (this means that the TaiwanICDF has the right to revoke a scholarship offered if an applicant cannot satisfy the visa requirements).
• Upon accepting a TaiwanICDF scholarship, not hold any other ROC (Taiwan) government-sponsored scholarship (such as the Taiwan Scholarship) in the same academic year in which the TaiwanICDF scholarship would be due to commence.
• Not be applying for another TaiwanICDF scholarship in unbroken succession to apply for a 2023 scholarship, applicants who have already held a TaiwanICDF scholarship, MOFA’s Taiwan Scholarship or an MOE scholarship must have graduated before July 31, 2022.
• Have never had any scholarship revoked by any ROC (Taiwan) government agency or related institution, nor been expelled from any Taiwanese university.

The total scholarship, including airfare (round-trip), housing, tuition, credit fees, insurance, textbook costs and a monthly allowance will be provided by the TaiwanICDF to each student within his/her given award period. The scholarship is itemized as follows:

• Airfare: The TaiwanICDF shall arrange your most-direct flights to and from Taiwan with Economy Class tickets.
• Housing: All students must reside in the student dormitories.
• Tuition fee: The TaiwanICDF will cover the tuition fee as required by the student’s university.
• Credit fees: Credit fees vary with the number of credits registered. Credit fees will also be covered as required by the student’s university.
• Insurance: While in Taiwan, in addition to the mandatory student safety insurance set by the Ministry of Education, each student must be insured for accidental and necessary medical coverage. Insurance fees will be covered for the entire duration of the program
• Book costs: Purchasing textbooks as required by the instructors shall be subject to the approval of the director of the student’s institute
• Allowance: (1). Undergraduate’s Program: Each student shall receive NT$12,000 per month during the period of the program as allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses. The sum will be deposited monthly into the student’s local bank account. (2). Master’s Program: Each student shall receive NT$15,000 per month during the period of the program as allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses. The sum will be deposited monthly into the student’s local bank account. (3). Ph.D. Program: Each student shall receive NT$17,000 per month during the period of the program as allowance for food and miscellaneous living expenses. The sum will be deposited monthly into the student’s local bank account.

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme (GOI-IES) 2023/2024 for study in Ireland (Funded)

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) is pleased to issue the 2023 Call under the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme . Under the initiative 60 scholarships will be provided for one year study at Masters or PhD levels to successful candidates who have an offer of a place at an eligible Irish higher education institution.

The offer is open to students from non-EU/EEA countries and is applicable to all fields of study.

The aim of the 2023 GOI-IES scheme is to reflect Ireland’s engagement in target partner countries. The scheme is operated in the higher education sector and funded in partnership between the Government of Ireland and the higher education institutions (HEIs). Scholarships are branded as prestigious awards reflecting the core messages about Ireland as a centre of international education, research and innovation. It is expected that for every scholarship awardee, awareness of Ireland among many more potential students as a location of excellence in international will rise.

Candidate profile Candidates must demonstrate:

• A record of outstanding academic achievement
• Excellent communication skills;
• Participation in extra curriculum activities. For example: humanitarian work; politics either local, national or international; arts; sports;
• A strong rationale for pursuing their study in Ireland that indicates how a GOI-IES aligns with their longer-term goals. Benefits for students: Scholarships must be regarded as highly desirable and valueadding to individuals’ subsequent lives and careers. In view of this, the GOI-IES will be awarded: • to high calibre higher education students from non-EU/EEA countries. • to students studying in Ireland for a period of one year.

Students who are successful will receive:

• A €10,000 stipend for one year’s study
• A full fee waiver of all tuition and other registration costs at the higher education institution

The HEA will award a scholarship to the student (through the HEI that the student is attending) amounting to €10,000 for one study year. This fund is directed at covering student costs and living expenses. The scholarship may be for: ▪ one year of a taught master’s degree programme or; ▪ one year of a research programme (e.g. one year of a 2-year research masters or a 3-4-year PhD programme).

• The scholarship stipend will be transferred to the host higher education institution (HEI) of the successful applicant. The HEI will then put in place a system to transfer the funds to the awardee.
• The HEI will be required to give a FULL fee waiver to the student for the scholarship year (i.e. tuition fee and registration charge are waived). This is the minimum matching funding requirement that institutions will be required to make to the scholarship scheme.
• It is expected that a total of 60 scholarships will be funded by the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships for the academic year 2023/2024.
• The call for applications will issue 14 December 2022 and the centralised application system is now live and accepting applications.
• The closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm on 24 March 2023 (Irish Time). Late applications will not be accepted.

ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship 2023 for students/scholars from developing countries (Fully Funded study in China)

The ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents (hereinafter referred to as  the ANSO Scholarship ) was formally launched in 2019 with the goal of training and cultivating young scientists from all over the world. The ANSO Scholarship supports 200 Master’s students and 300 PhD students every year to pursue postgraduate education at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) or institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) around China.  Please find the full Call for the ANSO Scholarship here .

This year, a sub-category of the ANSO Scholarship: the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship is being officially launched. Echoing the priority of TWAS/UNESCO, special (not exclusive) consideration will be given to two target groups:  Least Development Countries (LDCs) and women . Up to 40 PhD students from developing countries in the South will be selected by TWAS/UNESCO into this category every year.

Eligibility Criteria

All awardees are required to finish centralized training in Chinese language, Chinese culture and all required credits as well as practical research and completion of degree thesis at colleges and schools of USTC/UCAS or CAS institutes.

Any PhD awardee who fails the qualification test or annual assessment will face the consequences including:

•     Termination of his/her scholarship;

•     Discontinuity of his/her doctoral study;

•     Being provided with a certificate of attendance for the period of study undertaken in China but not a formal doctoral degree.

Commonwealth Ph.D. Scholarships 2023/2024 (for least developed countries and fragile states) to Study in the UK (Fully Funded)

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for candidates from least developed countries and fragile States in the Commonwealth, for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

Funded by the  UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) , Commonwealth PhD scholarships contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by supporting research that will have a developmental impact. They also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international candidates and encouraging links and collaboration, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Intended beneficiaries: 

Commonwealth PhD scholarships are for high-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

Eligibility Requirements: To apply for these scholarships, candidates must:

• Be available to start academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2023
• By September 2023, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree (2:2) and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)*.
• NOT be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university or in your home country before September/October 2023
• Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship
• Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format

Scholarship Worth:

• A Commonwealth Scholarship covers fees, approved fares, and personal maintenance. Other scholarships, awards, or bursaries that cover the same costs may not be held concurrently.
• For the CSC to administer your application effectively and efficiently after you have submitted, it will be necessary to create a record in your name. If you are nominated for an award to the CSC, your details will be kept on file. Basic anonymised demographic data for all applicants will be kept for analytical research. Selection Criteria Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria:

Tenure and Placement

• Scholarships are tenable at any approved UK university or higher education institution with which the CSC has a part-funding agreement for a specific programme of research for 36 months of full-time study only.
• Scholarships are to obtain one degree; funding will not be extended to enable candidates to complete a qualification in addition to or higher than that for which the selection was made.
• Scholarships are made in respect of  full-time study only  and no other course of study may be undertaken at the same time.

How to Apply:

Candidates must apply to one of the following nominating agencies as well as to the CSC. Nominating agencies will then put forward candidates to the CSC.  The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships :

• Selected universities/university bodies , which can nominate their own academic staff

Each nominating agency oversees its own selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria.  Candidates must check with the nominating agency for their specific advice and rules for applying, and their own eligibility criteria. Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2023/2024 for Foreign Students & Artists to study in Switzerland (Fully Funded)

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.

Types of scholarship

• The  research scholarship  is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level ( research fellowship ,  PhD ,  Postdoc ). Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology, as well as the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
• Art scholarships  are open to art students wishing to pursue an initial master’s degree in Switzerland ( arts ). Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts. This scholarship is available to students from a limited number of countries only.

Eligibility:

Candidates for the University Scholarships must:

• Hold a university degree (Bachelors/Masters) on commencement of the scholarship.
• Be able to demonstrate their academic abilities and what they aim to achieve.
• Contact the institution and/or the professor supervising their period of research. Universities may request supplementary information and/or set certain additional conditions to determine whether or not you qualify for admission.
• Be under the age of 35 (born on or after 1 January 1978).
• Be suitably proficient in the language of instruction (French, German, Italian, or English) in order to draw full benefit from their studies in Switzerland.

Scholarship Benefits:

• The scholarship covers a monthly payment, exemption of tuition fees, health insurance, airfare, special lodging allowance, etc.

Applications are subject to  preliminary selection  by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The  short-listed applications  are then assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which takes the final decision.

The FCS assesses scholarship applications according to three criteria:

• Candidate profile
• Quality of the research project or artistic work
• Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

The FCS is composed of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.

The FCS will select scholarship holders for the 2023-24 academic year by the end of May 2023. Scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year will be advertised online from August 2023.

Singapore International Graduate Award 2023 Scholarships for PhD study in Singapore (Fully Funded)

NZ-GRADS New Zealand Global Research Alliance Doctoral Scholarships 2022/2023 for study in New Zealand (Fully Funded)

New Zealand in support of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) , is pleased to offer a PhD scholarship for students from developing countries.

This scholarship offers the possibility for students from developing countries to come to New Zealand to work on research projects related to agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation.

For this special round, four PhD projects aligned with New Zealand research programmes have been selected:

• Assessing soil carbon changes associated with land management and land use change .
• Long-term soil phosphorus fertiliser implications for soil nitrogen cycling and Greenhouse Gas emission.
• Plant and plant/microbiome traits impacting N 2 O emissions from soil.
• Climate Neutral Farms (ClieNFarms).

The following criteria are non-negotiable:

• Your PhD study must be conducted in New Zealand (not from a distance)
• You cannot hold citizenship or permanent residency status in New Zealand or Australia
• You must be from a developing country.

Harvard University Academy Scholars Programme 2022 for international PhD Students

Application Deadline: September 23, 2022 .

This program is open to recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates in the social sciences.

The Academy Scholars Program of The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their academic careers whose work combines excellence in a social science discipline with a command of the language and knowledge or expertise of countries or regions outside of the United States and/or Canada. Their scholarship should span traditional disciplinary divisions and elucidate comparative, transnational, or domestic issues, past or present.

• These awards are open to recipients of PhD or comparable doctoral degree (within two years of the August 1, 2023, start date) and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences.
• Scholars nearing dissertation completion must be able to submit degree conferral documentation issued by their university registrar’s office by June 30, 2023, for an August 1, 2023, start date.
• Individuals who hold or have completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible to apply.
• Each year, five or six Academy Scholars are named for two-year appointments with an annual stipend of $75,000, with the two years to be completed within a three-year window.
• Year 1 of the fellowship must be taken up no later than the fall immediately following the postdoctoral fellowship offer. Delays or deferrals in the start of Year 1 are not permitted.
• Between Years 1 and 2, Academy Scholars may apply for a one-time leave (up to 12 months), either to accept or to continue with a tenure-track teaching appointment but for no other reason.
• Academy Scholars may not accept other sources of funding, awards, or obligations during their appointment.

JSPS RONPAKU Dissertation PhD Program 2022/2023

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has been carrying out the RONPAKU (Dissertation PhD) Program since 1978. The aim of this program is to provide tutorial and financial support for promising researchers in the countries of Asia and Africa or other specified countries among all those listed as Japanese ODA recipients who wish to obtain a PhD degree from a Japanese university through the submission of a dissertation without matriculating a doctoral course.

Grantees under the program ( RONPAKU fellows) are required to conduct their dissertation research under the joint supervision of an advisor in Japan and an advisor in their home country, and are expected to obtain their PhD degree within a maximum period of three years. RONPAKU fellows are required to visit a Japanese university to conduct research under the direct supervision of their advisor in Japan. The advisor may visit the RONPAKU fellow’s home university or research institution when deemed necessary to supervise the fellow’s research together with his/her home advisor

ASRIC-UEMF PhD Scholarships 2022/2023 for African Students (Fully Funded)

The  African Scientific, Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC)  is a special advisory body to the African Union mandated to implement the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2024) and to promote scientific research and innovation in order to address the challenges of Africa’s socio-economic development.

The 1 st  and 2 nd  Calls for PhD scholarships for African students were successfully announced for the academic years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, where eligible candidates passed through a rigorous screening process and were awarded the scholarship. In furtherance to the success of the 1 st  and 2 nd  Calls, the ASRIC and UEMF are hereby launching the 3 rd  Call for the year 2022.

• Must be a national of one of the African Union Member States;
• Applicants must be less than 35 years of age at the end date of this call;
• Must have Master’s Degree (in science or engineering), Diploma or Engineering Diploma or any other equivalent diploma (baccalaureate + 5); and
• The candidate must demonstrate remarkable ability and devotion along with experiences in conducting research in the selected field of study.

The ASRIC and UEMF  are offering 10 scholarship slots for the academic year 2022-2023 to African PhD students to carry out their doctoral research work at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes (UEMF), Morocco. The duration of the study and that of the scholarship is  three years .

• The scholarship includes; tuition fees of about $9,000, an annual return ticket from your home country with a maximum contribution of $1,000 during summer vacation, and stipend allowance of $1,000 monthly for 11 months every year.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1400 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunst-/Musikhochschulen’).

We expect our scholarship recipients to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged, and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.

Please note: The Heinrich Böll Foundation only accept online applications; written proof of German language proficiency (Minimum requirement: „Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang“ Level DSH 2 or „TestDaF“ Level B2) necessary.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation’s selection procedure for scholarship applicants consists of three stages: – Submission of written application documents, including a personal reference on your social commitment and an expert reference from a university lecturer or, in the case of new students – a schoolteacher. The expert reference, preferably in a sealed envelope, may be submitted with the applications or submitted separately by the referee. – An interview with a liaison lecturer, usually held at your university or near where you live (telephone interviews may also be held). – Attendance at a selection workshop in Berlin consisting of a one-to-one interview and a group discussion. At each stage only a small group is selected for the next stage. You will be informed in writing of the decision reached at each stage of the selection procedure.

South Africa is hard to beat when it comes to year-round sunshine, excellent wine and exhilarating landscapes. What’s more, South African universities are growing in quality and many are now internationally recognised as world class research centres.

These low cost, but high quality research facilities and the wealth of things to do in a country that offers everything from lush winelands, forests and lagoons, to the ‘Big Five’ safari animals, mean it comes as no surprise that this country is a welcome choice to study abroad.

If you’re considering a PhD in South Africa, this page provides all the information you need to know about the PhD in general, and how applications, funding and visas work.

PhD opportunities in South Africa – what’s on offer for 2024?

South Africa is growing into the continent’s hub for PhDs, meaning that opportunities for students have never been better. The students in South Africa are spoilt by the diverse terrain, warm climate and magnificent wildlife. All of South Africa’s universities boast campuses in some of the most stunning locations on earth, with top class facilities to match.

South Africa certainly ticks a lot of boxes, and here are some more things to consider:

South African universities

There are 26 public universities in South Africa. These comprise of 12 traditional universities, eight ‘technikons’ offering technical and vocational courses, and six comprehensive universities, offering a combination of the above. These are all distributed within all nine provinces of South Africa, each of which has at least one university.

The main student hubs are the big cities such as Cape Town , Johannesburg and Durban , with the University of Cape Town being recognised as the highest rated institution in both South Africa and on the continent.

University Groups

South Africa’s government is actively developing university research facilities across the country in a bid to attract more PhD students. This will increase the quality of research output and academic professionals in the industry. Many of the universities in South Africa are associated with these institutions and ‘mission groups’ as they share similar aims and objectives.

These groups include the follwoing:

• The National Research Foundation (NRF) is aimed at establishing leading-edge research platforms across the country. NRF-rated researchers work across the country’s universities, enabling South Africa to benchmark the quality of its research against the best in the world.
• South Africa has 14 Centres of Excellence . These CoEs are dedicated to different research areas, and enable researchers to collaborate across institutions on long-term projects that are internationally competitive.
• The South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) has been established to strengthen research and innovation capacity of public universities for producing high quality postgraduate students.

A doctorate from a university associated with any of these government initiatives is impressive. As a PhD student, you require a research facility with the necessary expertise in the specialism you want to study.

South African university cities

The University of Cape Town and the University of Witwatersrand are in the top 250 universities in the world. Whether it’s Biotechnology, African Development or Engineering, South Africa’s universities certainly have many specialist focus areas that attract PhD candidates to undertake their research there.

Carrying out a PhD in South Africa will most likely be a highly collaborative experience. You will go where your research takes you, and there are many exciting cities to explore whilst you are there. .

The following are the main university cities in South Africa:

• Johannesburg

PhD structure

PhDs in South Africa generally follow a similar pattern to European and American programmes, but with the added bonus of becoming a wine connoisseur. They focus on the candidate completing a supervised thesis that adds original research and knowledge to a field of study.

The PhD will consist mainly of pure research and you will spend most of your time working towards an independent doctoral thesis, which will most likely begin with a lot of reading and writing a literature review, summarising and evaluating existing research related to your topic. Some South African PhDs also require coursework to be completed in addition to the main thesis, but this is less common.

Depending on your project, you will accumulate data by analysing source materials, producing experimental results or collecting survey data as appropriate. Throughout this process, you will liaise with your supervisor. You will most likely have at least one other supervisor, and they will both be a big part of your PhD experience.

Programme length

South African PhDs generally take between two to three years to complete if you are in full-time study, with a minimum of 4 years if you are studying part-time . The course length does vary however, and this generally depends on time of registration and funding arrangements.

Assessment and examination

PhD opportunities in South Africa require you to submit a written thesis at the end of your PhD. This is normally between 80,000-100,000 words. It is normal in South Africa for PhD candidates to give a written notice to their faculty at least two or three months before submitting their thesis for examination. This generally includes giving the title and a short overview of the thesis.

Once this notice is given, three examiners (internal and external) are appointed to examine your thesis. These examiners, or at least one of them, are also experts in your field.

For a South African PhD, it is not common to have a viva . This is an additional, oral examination, done in the UK and Europe, where the PhD candidate ‘defends’ their thesis in response to the examiners asking questions.

This is not the case in South Africa, and instead a written report is submitted outlining the examiners conclusions (and any changes or corrections that need to be done) and your PhD result.

Fees and funding

International students studying in South Africa benefit from relatively cheap doctorate programmes compared to Europe and North America.

South African tuition fees vary widely between institutions and courses. International students are required to pay an international service fee of around of R4,200 (USD $270) and/ or a registration fee of about R6,970 (USD $440).

PhD programme fees can vary from depending on the type of PhD programme (thesis only or coursework and thesis), the university and the subject area. For example, at Wits University, PhD programmes in Engineering are on average R31,450 (USD $1,835) per year and PhD programmes in Sciences are on average R23,900 (USD $1,395). PhD fees at the University of Cape Town are generally the same for all subjects, averaging at around R23,370 (USD $1,360) per year.

International students are not eligible for support from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) – the South African student loan and bursary scheme. Bursaries and scholarships are available to international PhD students and are offered by universities and external organisations.

These include:

• Studentships and funded PhD places from the universities themselves. Some institutions also have specific funding opportunities for international students. These PhD places are competitive. You can check with universities or browse opportunities here on FindAPhD.
• Student loans from major banks to non-South Africans with valid study permits.
• Postgraduate scholarships from the National Research Foundation (NRF) to a limited number of international students.

Applying for a PhD in South Africa

The first step for your South African PhD application should be to contact a prospective supervisor (universities will not normally consider applications from international students who haven’t done this).

The person you choose should normally be the lead researcher for a project or research group you wish to join, or an academic with research interests related to the topic you would like to propose.

Once you’ve found a potential supervisor, you should contact them via email . Try to provide a clear and concise description of your project or interests – and make the relationship to their research obvious.

Once you have an expression of interest from a potential supervisor, you can begin your formal application to the university.

Admission requirements

To apply for a PhD in South Africa, you will require an existing Bachelors and usually a Masters degree in a related subject. In special circumstances, a candidate without a Masters may be accepted. There will usually be an application fee of around R300 ($17.50).

Individual universities will set their own requirements, but in general, you can expect to be asked for some or all of the following:

• CV and evidence of previous qualifications (some may even want to see a copy of your Masters dissertation
• Personal statement/motivation letter
• A research proposal (if you’re putting forward your own PhD topic)

Once your PhD application has been reviewed, the university may wish to interview you. This is a good sign, as your prospective supervisor thinks you have potential, and it’s also a great way to show yourself off!

Don’t worry though – they will not expect you to travel all the way to South Africa for just an interview. As an international student, this will most likely be done via a video-conferencing platform.

Application deadlines

Deadlines for PhD applications vary in South Africa. While some deadlines are in August or September, some universities have PhD programmes that are open to apply all year round. It is also important to take into account any deadlines that you may have if you are applying to funding.

You can check for specific dates with your chosen institute and if you are in touch with your prospective supervisor, you can always ask them.

Remember that, even if there isn't a deadline, your application will still take time. As a general rule, you should apply at least four months before you hope to start your PhD.

Student visas

South African study permits are issued for a programme of study at a specific institution. Once accepted by a South African university, international students are required to obtain a study visa .

Visa requirements

In order to qualify for a visa to study a PhD in South Africa you’ll normally need the following documents:

• Proof of financial means to cover envisaged living expenses for the duration of study
• An official letter from the university confirming enrolment
• A valid passport that expires no less than 30 days before the end of your course
• Proof of medical cover

Language requirements

South African PhDs are organised and delivered in English, so you will need to have sufficient language skills and be able to comprehend complex information and communicate ideas for your PhD.

For international students for whom English is a second language, an English language test must be taken. The most recognised English language tests will be accepted. The score you need will depend on the test you take and the minimum requirements set by your specific university.

Health insurance

The South African government states that in order to obtain a student visa, the student must have adequate medical cover with a registered South African medical scheme and provide evidence for this when applying for the visa. A letter confirming that this health insurance will be renewed every year during the duration of your stay is also required. Work during your PhD

You can carry out paid work for up to 20 hours per week whilst researching for your PhD in South Africa. However, you should check that any work you undertake fits with the requirements of your PhD (and the expectations of your supervisor).

Fees and processing times

To apply for a student visa, you will need to complete the BI-1738 form , which costs around R1,800 (USD $120) to process. It normally takes six to eight weeks for applications to be processed and is valid for the duration of your course.

With internationally recognised universities and research capabilities, a South African PhD can translate into career opportunities all over the world.

Can I work in South Africa after my PhD?

International students who are awarded their PhD from a South African university can apply for a critical skills work visa (a five-year temporary residence visa) which includes a 12-month period to secure a job. After the end of the five years, they can apply for permanent residence.

Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships

What we offer

In 2025, the value of the scholarship package will range from R20,000 to R100,000 depending on student circumstances. We support both full and part-time Masters and PhD level study at a South African university and will consider applications from those who wish to study by distance learning.

Google PhD Fellowships directly support graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor.

Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourage people of diverse backgrounds to apply. We currently offer fellowships in Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the United States.

Google PhD Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. The Fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the fields listed below. Note that region-specific research areas will be listed in application forms during the application window.

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field. Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing.

In Canada and the United States, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

What does the Google PhD Fellowship include?

Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If students wish to apply for a job at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

• Up to 3 year Fellowship
• US $12K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Google Research Mentor
• 1 year Fellowship
• AUD $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Up to 2 year Fellowship (effective from 2024 for new recipients)
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.

Early-stage PhD students

• Up to 4 year Fellowship
• US $50K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Late-stage PhD students

• US $10K to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• US $15K per year to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Southeast Asia

• US $10K per year for up to 3 years (or up to graduation, whichever is earlier) to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Is my university eligible for the PhD Fellowship Program?

Africa, Australia/New Zealand , Canada, East Asia, Europe and the United States : universities must be an accredited research institution that awards research degrees to PhD students in computer science (or an adjacent field).

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open to universities/institutes in India, Latin America (excluding Cuba), and in eligible Southeast Asian countries/regions (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam).

Restrictions : All award payments and recipients will be reviewed for compliance with relevant US and international laws, regulations and policies. Google reserves the right to withhold funding that may violate laws, regulations or our policies.

What are the eligibility requirements for students?

All regions

• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to a PhD program. The awardee must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
• Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Africa: Incoming PhD students are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
• Australia and New Zealand : early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• East Asia: students who have completed most of graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins. Students should have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a fellowship.
• Europe: Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.

Direct applicant students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

• Latin America : incoming or early stage-students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

What should be included in an application? What language should the application be in?

All application materials should be submitted in English.

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single, flat (not portfolio) PDF file:

• Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (1-page) resume/CV of the student's primary PhD program advisor
• Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor's degree to date
• Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee''s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: What impact would receiving this Fellowship have on your education? Describe any circumstances affecting your need for a Fellowship and what educational goals this Fellowship will enable you to accomplish.
• Transcripts of current and previous academic records
• 1-2 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)

Canada, East Asia, the United States

• Cover sheet signed by the Department Chair confirming the student passes eligibility requirements. (See FAQ "What are the eligibility requirements for students?")
• Short (1-page) CV of the student's primary advisor
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
• Research / dissertation proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)

How do I apply for the PhD Fellowship Program? Who should submit the applications? Can students apply directly for a Fellowship?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia: students may apply directly during the application period.

Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States : students cannot apply directly to the program; they must be nominated by an eligible university during the application period.

How many students may each university nominate?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open directly to students with no limit to the number of students that can apply from a university.

Australia and New Zealand : universities may nominate up to two eligible students.

Canada and the United States : Universities may nominate up to four eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage additional nominees who self-identify as a woman, Black / African descent, Hispanic / Latino / Latinx, Indigenous, and/or a person with a disability.

Africa, East Asia and Europe : Universities may nominate up to three eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage the additional nominee who self-identifies as a woman.

How are applications evaluated?

In Canada and the United State, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

A nominee's status as a member of a historically marginalized group is not considered in the selection of award recipients.

Research should align with Google AI Principles .

Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

How are Google PhD Fellowships given?

Any monetary awards will be paid directly to the Fellow's university for distribution. No overhead should be assessed against them.

What are the intellectual property implications of a Google PhD Fellowship?

Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. If that is the case, they are subject to the same intellectual property restrictions as any other Google intern.

Will the Fellowship recipients become employees of Google?

No, Fellowship recipients do not become employees of Google due to receiving the award. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If they are interested in working at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

Can Fellowship recipients also be considered for other Google scholarships?

Yes, Fellowship recipients are eligible for these scholarships .

After award notification, when do the Google PhD Fellowships begin?

After Google PhD Fellowship recipients are notified, the Fellowship is effective starting the following school year.

What is the program application time period?

Applications for the 2024 program will open in March 2024 and close in May 2024 for all regions. Refer to the main Google PhD Fellowship Program page for each region’s application details.

A global awards announcement will be made in September on the Google Research Blog publicly announcing all award recipients.

Scholarships background

The Faculty of Law, through its own fundraising efforts and donor support and legacies, has a number of scholarships in support of postgraduate study every year. Some scholarships are awarded on application, while others are awarded based purely on merit at the discretion of the Law Faculty Postgraduate Scholarships Committee. Scholarships for postgraduate study awarded on application

Only candidates registered within the minimum time for completion of their degree are eligible for the award of any of these scholarships, bursaries or grants.

Excellence in Law Postgraduate Scholarships

The Faculty of Law has raised donor funding to be able to offer scholarships to previously disadvantaged South African postgraduate candidates. Several Excellence in Law scholarships are available annually, at LLM, MPhil and PhD level. These are awarded based primarily on academic merit, although financial need may also be a consideration.

• Closing date: 9 August 2024
• Value: R60 000 pa for LLM or MPhil candidates and R90 000 pa for PhD candidates
• Tenure: One year for LLM or MPhil by coursework and research candidates. Two years for Master's by research only candidates, subject to satisfactory progress in the first year of registration. Three years for PhD candidates, subject to satisfactory progress in the first and second year of registration.

Law Faculty Master's and Doctoral Scholarships

To encourage postgraduate research, the Law Faculty makes awards to suitable candidates for master's degrees by research only or doctoral degrees in the Faculty of Law at UCT. This funding is in addition to other scholarship opportunities and is intended as a form of bridging finance to give candidates contemplating higher degrees the security of knowing that their financial needs will be at least partially met for the first year of their studies, which is a critical period in their progress. Successful candidates must also make application to the UCT Postgraduate Funding Office and other appropriate sources for scholarship funding. Any award from external sources that takes financial support beyond the level of R230 000 per annum for a master's candidate or R283 000 per annum for a doctoral candidate will then be deducted from the scholarship granted by the Faculty.

• Tenure: One year (The scholarship may be re-awarded on application once only.)

Basil and Con Corder Scholarship

In 1997, a scholarship was established in terms of the wishes of the late Basil Corder. The scholarship is awarded to a University of Cape Town graduate in law who is registered at the University of Cape Town for the LLM degree by coursework and minor dissertation, on the basis of financial need, proven academic merit and having displayed a concern for the wider community through service individually or in voluntary organisations. Preference will be given to an applicant who will be completing part of the degree at a university outside South Africa. In the event that there are no suitable candidates for the award at the level of LLM studies, the scholarship may be awarded to an applicant registered for the Intermediate or Final Level LLB, on the basis of financial need, proven academic merit and indication of concern for the wider community, as set out above.

• Tenure: One year

Ethel Walt Human Rights Scholarship

Ethel Walt was a human rights activist who directed her passion for social justice through her work in the Black Sash. This scholarship is awarded towards tuition for the LLM or MPhil programme in Social Justice or Human Rights Law by coursework and minor dissertation. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate proven community involvement of some kind, and a commitment to engaging in community issues after graduation.

The Alexander Burman Memorial Grant

One grant is awarded each year to a woman who is either a South African citizen or permanent resident, and is in their first year of a PhD in the field of socio-legal studies. The award is based primarily on academic merit although financial need may also be considered, and preference will be given to candidates from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

• Value: R100 000
• Tenure: One year, non-renewable

Sir William Solomon Memorial Scholarship

In 1939 Miss Emile Jane Solomon bequeathed R10 000 to the University to found a scholarship in memory of her brother, the late Sir William Solomon MA KCSI KCMG, formerly Chief Justice of the Union of South Africa.

The scholarship is available for candidates taking research degrees in law by thesis only.

• Value: R20 000 for LLM or MPhil and R30 000 for PhD
• Tenure: One year (The scholarship may be re-awarded on application once only)

Wilfred Kramer Law Grants 

Wilfred Kramer Law Grants are available for those who enroll for approved higher postgraduate study in the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Town. In addition, limited funds are available for candidates who wish to participate in an approved exchange programme at an overseas university; the candidates do part of the LLM coursework at an approved overseas university and the balance of coursework as well as the minor dissertation at UCT Law Faculty. • Tenure: One year (a grant may be re-awarded on application once only)

Beric Croome Postgraduate Tax Law Scholarship

This scholarship has been established in recognition of the contribution made by Dr Beric Croome to the practice of tax law. Generous financial support from Dr Croome, an Advocate of the High Court and qualified CA who completed a PhD in Tax Law at UCT Law in 2008, as well as from friends and associates, has enabled the establishment of a fund from which an annual scholarship of R10 000 will be awarded to a candidate undertaking postgraduate tax law studies and who has an undergraduate record that reflects effort and perseverance, has financial need and who provides some evidence of having overcome disadvantage.

The Dikgang Moseneke Postgraduate Fellowship

These fellowships have been established by the UCT Faculty of Law, in recognition of the contribution that Justice Dikgang Moseneke has made to the field of law in South Africa. Generously supported by Justice Moseneke, as well as friends and associates, these fellowships are intended to promote and encourage academic research into areas of legal theory and practice, and their impact on social justice, democracy, constitutionalism, public accountability, development, and social change. The fellowships are awarded to suitable candidates registered for postgraduate studies at master’s and doctoral level, a major component of which would be a thesis within the broad area of law, justice and society. Only one PhD and one LLM fellowship is awarded each year.

• Value: R140 000 pa for PhD; R90 000 pa for Masters
• Tenure: One year for a candidate registered for an LLM by coursework and research degree. Two years for a candidate registered for an LLM by research only degree, subject to satisfactory progress being shown in the first year of registration. Three years for a candidate registered for a PhD degree, subject to satisfactory progress being shown in the first and second years of registration.

Faculty International Student Bursaries

The Faculty awards bursaries for Postgraduate Diploma and coursework and research Master’s candidates which will reduce the International Term Fee. These are awarded based on academic merit, financial need and Faculty requirements. Further details may be found in section 5.7 of the Student Fees book.

Scholarships awarded without application

Ilse Lowissohn Grants

In 1984 a sum of R10 000 was bequeathed to the University by the late Miss Ilse Lowissohn for the purpose of providing a grant to assist a graduate of the Faculty of Law to undertake courses of postgraduate study in legal history or comparative law at an overseas university. Candidates are selected annually by the WP Schreiner Professor of Law from graduates of the faculty who have shown interest in the historical and comparative dimensions of Roman-Dutch law. Recipients must be registered or intend to register for an approved course of postgraduate study at an overseas university and use the grant to further their knowledge of Roman Law or one of the modern civil law jurisdictions.

Ina Ackermann Scholarship

A scholarship in memory of the late Ina Ackermann was established in the Faculty of Law from contributions donated to the Ina Ackermann Memorial Fund by family, friends and colleagues. The scholarship is awarded annually in recognition of the importance which Ms Ackermann attached to the role of women in the practising legal profession and is awarded to a woman graduate of the Faculty of Law at UCT who proceeds to the full-time first semester programme offered by the School for Legal Practice. Factors considered when making the award would include academic achievement, financial need and potential for success in the practising legal profession.

Students who intend registering toward a Master’s or Doctoral qualification at UCT may be eligible to apply for financial support. Such support, depending on eligibility and selection criteria, includes either financial need and/or merit bursaries.

In line with the UCT transformation agenda, in allocating funding for these awards, priority will be given to funding Black South African and permanent resident applicants who qualify for financial need. In the current context “Black” includes African, Coloured and Indian students. “Financial need” refers to students who qualify via the National Means Test for either Financial Aid (where gross annual family income <R350 000) or GAP tuition bursaries (where annual gross family income is between R350 000 and R600 000).

Students applying for either financial need and/or merit awards may do so via the Postgraduate funding form 10A.

It is critical for prospective students to also source other awards for which they may be eligible, such as from the National Research Foundation (NRF), the department/Research group where the student will be registered, as well as through other external sources such as private/external donors. General Eligibility

• Applicants must be South African or permanent residents.
• Applicants must apply for a full-time Master's or Doctoral program in the relevant department/faculty

(i.e.  Only applicants who have applied for an academic place via the UCT’s Admissions Office will be considered for funding).

• All Master's and Doctoral applicants who apply for financial need or merit awards are required to have applied for an NRF bursary, if they are eligible for NRF funding.
• Priority will be given to students who have a minimum grade point average (GPA) score of 60% for their Honours degree.
• Students will not be eligible for funding support if they are employed in excess of 20 hours per week during the year of study. (Note – if you are to hold NRF funding concurrently with UCT funding, the NRF requirement is for not more than 12 hours of work per week during the year of study).

Conditions of Financial need or Merit award

• Eligible applicants are funded for two years for the Master’s degree (first and second year only) or three years for the Doctoral degree (first, second and third year only), and must be full-time students.
• Professional or full coursework Master’s degrees, including MBA’s and MMED’s, are ineligible for funding.

Financial need eligibility criteria

• Information provided on form 10A will be used to determine an applicant’s financial need (the “assessed need”) by applying the National Means Test (NMT) used by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and the criteria used by UCT to determine eligibility.
• financial aid eligible, where gross annual family income is between <R350 000, or;
• eligible for GAP tuition bursary where family income is between R350 000 and R600 000, or;
• not eligible for needs-based financial support, but may be considered for a merit bursary.

Value of Financial need awards

• The value of the financial need bursary will be calculated on “assessed need” for the full cost of attendance (FCOA) in 2020 and will take into consideration other scholarships awarded to students.
• Depending on budget availability, students who are eligible for financial aid may be funded for their FCOA or “assessed need”, which is the approved cost of study (including tuition, and applicable accommodation and food allowances.
• Students who do not meet the UCT financial aid need based criteria but meet the criteria for a GAP tuition bursary according to family income, will be eligible for a percentage of their approved course tuition fees.

Value of Merit awards

• Merit awards normally cover your tuition fees in part only. Merit awards are approximately R30,000 per annum.

• Applicants who apply for financial need must complete the application checklist and provide all supporting documentation for assessment.
• Students who have previously been supported by NSFAS/UCT as undergraduates or full Financial Aid at Honours, still need to complete form 10A to apply for funding for their Master’s or Doctoral degree.
• Original copies of applications and all supporting documentation must be submitted to the UCT Postgraduate Centre & Funding Office.

International and refugee scholarships 

A limited number of scholarships are available annually to international and refugee students for postgraduate study in any discipline at UCT. As there is only one call for applications each year, it is important that the application procedure is strictly followed. These scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and preference is given to senior candidates.

All UCT international and refugee students' scholarships are supplementary as a contribution towards Cost of Attendance. Students who apply must have the means to fund their studies.

Values: Honours – R25 000 Master’s – R30 000 Doctoral – R35 000

The scholarships are renewable for the duration of the course of study, if satisfactory progress is maintained, for 1 year at honours level, 2 at master's level and 3 at doctoral level. Students who are eligible for renewals of awards made, may apply for such renewals by completing Form 10F.

Applicants must apply for full-time admission through the UCT admissions office or the faculty office. Late applications are not accepted.

DSI-NRF Postgraduate Student Funding for the 2023 Academic Year

The DSI and NRF are pleased to announce a call for new applications for DSI-NRF Postgraduate Student Funding for the academic year 2023. All continuing students who are eligible for a second or third year of funding must submit a Progress Report and not a new application.

The NRF minimum academic requirement for postgraduate funding is 65% . The entry age requirement is 28, 30 and 32 years or younger for honours, master’s and doctoral studies respectively, in the year of application, regardless of first year of registration. Successful applicants will be funded either at Full Cost of Study (FCS) or Partial Cost of Study (PCS) . The FCS funding will be awarded to South African citizens and Permanent Residents only, who are either financially needy (i.e., those whose combined household family income is less than or equal to R350 000 per annum), living with a disability or exceptional academic achievers . However, the PCS funding will be awarded to 5% of international students including South African citizens and Permanent Residents who could not be funded under FCS, but meet other minimum requirements for the NRF scholarship funding criteria. Scholarships are intended to support honours, master’s and doctoral candidates to pursue studies in all areas of Science, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences, and Humanities .
