Credential Guidelines

  • 2024 Credential Terms & Conditions for Use

ELIGIBILITY

USATF will issue media credentials to “members of the working press”. By definition, a “member of the working press” shall be a paid employee or representative of a known and established “media organization”. By definition, a “media organization” is either a person or entity engaged in disseminating information to the general public through a newspaper, magazine, or other accepted publication, radio, television, or other medium of mass communication. Clubs (including those representing clubs/teams/athletes, i.e. photographer shooting on behalf of a club or an individual athlete), and coaches will not be credentialed as media.   Having been credentialed at previous USATF, World Athletics, NCAA, Olympic, or other related events does not guarantee acceptance.   Journalists who receive credentials must be on assignment for a reputable media organization as outlined above that has a record of consistently covering the sport. All photographers will be required to submit a letter of assignment to the USATF communications team to be considered for a credential. Content creators will be required to submit a content plan prior to approval. Freelance reporters must be able to submit a letter of assignment upon request.   On a case-by-case basis, USATF will consider applications for media credentials from independent online media representatives. Credentials will be granted to these individuals if space allows and after all established media organizations have been accommodated.   All journalists who wish to attend USATF events must submit a media credential application . Journalists, and their editors, who apply for credentials acknowledge they have read and agree to these media eligibility guidelines as well as USATF’s broadcast restrictions . Organizations may request more than one media credential, however, USATF reserves the right to limit the number of credentials allocated to any media organization in its sole discretion . USATF does not guarantee that any credentials will be awarded to any organization.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Media credential applications must be received by the established deadlines . USATF will not guarantee that media who submit their applications after the deadline will be accommodated. Submitting an application in no way guarantees that you will receive a credential. Space may be limited and only a specific number of media credentials will be issued per event.

CREDENTIAL ACCEPTANCE

USATF encourages all media organizations to attend USATF events. However, if there is a limitation on the number of credentials issued for a specific event, USATF will consider the following criteria, in order of significance, when issuing approval:

  • Media organizations with a large national audience
  • Local media in the host city
  • Media outlets that attend USATF events on a regular basis
  • Sport-specific specialty media
  • Independent online representatives

An acceptance or rejection email will be sent to the applicant and/or editor listed on the application no later than 10 days after the application deadline. Please contact [email protected] if you have a question about the status of your application.

CREDENTIAL USAGE

Credential Use Conditions   Credentials must be worn and visible at all times during the event. Each credential is issued specifically for the journalist who was accepted through the credential process. Any media outlet that wishes to change the name(s) of its credentialed media must submit a new credential request. If the change is to take place after the credential deadline has passed, contact [email protected] prior to the event. Credentials may not be given or loaned to another person for any reason, failure to adhere to this can result in the loss of credential for all parties involved   Credentialed journalists will receive admission to the event, access to media work areas, mixed zone, and to any spaces designated for media in the venue. Misuse of a USATF media credential will result in the immediate loss of the credential, removal from the media areas and the possible loss of credential privileges for future events for the journalist and the assigning media agency.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographers must be on assignment from a known and established media organization and use professional camera equipment. Photographers must attend mandatory photo meetings, as outlined in a media alert sent prior to competition by a member of the USATF communications staff   All photographs taken at the event are to be used solely for non-commercial editorial purposes by the publication and website for which an individual is credentialed. Photography is for editorial and/or personal use only and may not be published otherwise. If a photographer is working on behalf of multiple outlets, they must disclose all outlets in their application.   Failure to comply with the policies stated in the preceding paragraph will result in the immediate loss of credential privileges for all future USATF events. Additionally, the media outlet associated with the photographer in violation of such policies will lose the ability to credential a photographer at future USATF events.   Updated 3/19/24

'Appalled': Veterans slam Trump campaign's attacks on Tim Walz's military background

letter of assignment photographer

WASHINGTON — More than 1,000 veterans and military family members have signed an open letter saying they are "appalled at Donald Trump and JD Vance’s politically motivated attacks" on the military service of Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz .

The letter, circulated with help from the left-leaning veterans advocacy group VoteVets, comes as Walz's 24-year record in the Army National Guard has become a target of the Trump campaign. Vance, Trump's running-mate, a U.S. senator from Ohio and also a fellow veteran, has attacked Walz's 2005 retirement from the military prior to his battalion's deployment to Iraq.

" JD Vance’s recent comments attacking Governor Walz’s service record are disrespectful and deeply disappointing, especially given Vance’s own service − which we are also profoundly grateful for," the letter, obtained by USA TODAY, reads. "But given Donald Trump’s long record of expressing disdain for service members, veterans, and their families, it’s unsurprising that his running mate has stooped to such lows."

More: The new 'Swift Boat?' Tim Walz's military service targeted by Trump campaign

Walz, the governor of Minnesota who Democratic nominee Kamala Harris picked as her running-mate last week,  joined the National Guard  out of high school at 17 years old on April 8, 1981 and served until May 16, 2005. Walz has said he retired from the guard to run for Congress, which he did successfully in 2006.

The alert order for Walz's unit to mobilize for Iraq was received on July 14, 2005 − almost two months after Walz had retired − and the unit mobilized Oct. 12, 2005, according to the Minnesota National Guard. But Walz appeared to know as early as March 2005 that his battalion could be sent to Iraq based on a press release from his first run for Congress.

"When the United States of America asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did. I did what they asked me to do, and I did it honorably, and I'm very proud of that service," Vance said last week. "When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the army and allowed his unit to go without him."

"What bothers me about Tim Walz is the 'stolen valor' garbage. Do not to pretend to be something you're not," Vance said.

Veteran supporters calls Walz a 'beacon of respect and support'

The letter is signed by 1,048 veterans, veteran families, military families, caregivers and survivors who support the Harris-Walz ticket. They praise Walz's military service, writing that "as individuals who have served and sacrificed for this nation, we are thrilled to see someone who served our country in uniform for decades on the ticket."

Among the veterans who signed the letter are retired Maj. Gen. Randy Manner, who held top positions with the National Guard Bureau, and Brenda Sue Fulton, a former military officer and assistant secretary of Veterans Affairs in the Biden administration. The veterans organization Common Defense also helped organize the letter.

"Governor Walz, a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, has demonstrated throughout his career a profound respect for those who serve, as well as their families," the letter reads. "His service, both in uniform and as a public servant, embodies the values of duty, honor, and commitment."

"Where Trump and Vance seek to diminish the sacrifices of our military community and renege on our obligation to veterans," it continues, "Governor Walz has always stood as a beacon of respect and support."

Harris campaign says Walz 'misspoke' about carrying weapon into war

Vance and the Trump campaign have also accused Walz of embellishing his military record, seizing on past comments he made in support of gun control when the governor falsely said, "We can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war is the only place where those weapons are at." Walz was never deployed for combat.

Harris campaign spokeswoman Lauren Hitt told USA Today that Walz "misspoke."

"He did handle weapons of war and believes strongly that only military members trained to carry those deadly weapons should have access to them, unlike Donald Trump and JD Vance who prioritize the gun lobby over our children," Hitt said in a statement.

Walz rose to the rank of command sergeant major in the Minnesota National Guard, but because he did not complete additional course work at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy before leaving the National Guard in 2005, he retired as a master sergeant.

Vance's attacks have drawn comparisons to the unsubstantiated "Swift Boat" claims against Democrat John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race against President George W. Bush. The group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth challenged Kerry's decorated Vietnam War record. Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign,  led the Swift Boat campaign attacking Kerry in 2004.

The Minnesota National Guard released additional detail Tuesday about Walz’s service, showing that he was eligible to retire three years before he ultimately ended his career as an enlisted soldier.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Guard announced that Walz received notice that he was eligible to retire Aug. 3, 2002. Walz would serve another three years, including a deployment to Europe.

It’s unclear when Walz filed his paperwork for retirement. Manner, who held top positions with the National Guard Bureau, told USA TODAY that it typically takes months to approve a retirement after papers are filed.

The best way to start a Photographer cover letter is by grabbing the reader's attention with a strong opening line. This could be a brief statement about your passion for photography, a notable achievement, or a unique skill you possess. For example, "As a photographer who has captured award-winning images for renowned magazines, I am excited about the opportunity to bring my creative vision to your team." This not only shows your enthusiasm for the role but also gives a glimpse of your experience. Remember to address the hiring manager by name if possible, to make your letter more personal and engaging.

Photographers should end a cover letter by summarizing their skills, experience, and passion for photography. They should reiterate their interest in the position and express enthusiasm about the possibility of contributing to the company or client's visual storytelling. It's also important to thank the reader for their time and consideration. For example: "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my unique vision, technical skills, and passion for storytelling to your team. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my background and skills would be a good fit for your photography needs." Remember to end with a professional closing like "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name and contact information. This leaves a positive, professional impression and makes it easy for them to reach out to you.

A photographer's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is enough to succinctly introduce yourself, explain your interest in the position, highlight your relevant skills and experiences, and conclude with a call to action. As a photographer, your cover letter should be concise and impactful, allowing your portfolio to showcase your talent and skills. Remember, hiring managers often have many applications to go through, so a shorter, well-crafted cover letter is more likely to hold their attention.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as a photographer can seem daunting, but it's absolutely possible. Here's how you can approach it: 1. Start with a Strong Introduction: Begin by introducing yourself and stating the position you're applying for. Mention where you found the job posting to show you're actively seeking opportunities in photography. 2. Highlight Relevant Skills: Even if you don't have professional experience, you likely have skills that are relevant to photography. These could be technical skills like understanding of lighting, composition, and editing software, or soft skills like creativity, attention to detail, and patience. Make sure to explain how these skills can benefit the employer. 3. Showcase Your Passion: Employers want to hire people who are passionate about their work. Talk about why you love photography, what inspired you to pursue it, and how you've been developing your skills. This could include self-taught practice, online courses, or even just a keen interest in visual arts. 4. Include Any Related Experience: If you've done any unpaid work, like shooting for a friend's wedding or a local event, don't hesitate to include it. You can also mention any relevant coursework or school projects. 5. Mention Your Willingness to Learn: Employers understand that everyone has to start somewhere. Express your eagerness to learn and grow in the field of photography. 6. Close with a Strong Conclusion: Reiterate your interest in the position and your eagerness to contribute your skills and passion to their team. Thank them for considering your application and express hope for further discussion. 7. Attach a Portfolio: If possible, attach a portfolio of your work or provide a link to an online portfolio. This gives potential employers a chance to see your skills firsthand. Remember, everyone starts somewhere. Your passion and dedication can often be just as valuable as direct experience. Good luck!

Harris Drew a Crowd in Detroit, But Detractors Spread Bogus Claim to the Contrary

By Saranac Hale Spencer

Vice President Kamala Harris drew a large crowd at a campaign rally near Detroit, according to photos, videos and press reports. But posts circulating online make the baseless claim — amplified by former President Donald Trump — that an image of the event was fabricated or manipulated by artificial intelligence to inflate the crowd size.

Former President Donald Trump has often focused on the size of crowds at various events. In fact , he started his term in office with false claims that inflated the number of people who attended his inauguration.

letter of assignment photographer

Now, facing Vice President Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election, Trump has amplified false claims diminishing the attendance at Harris’ recent events, which have drawn arena – filling crowds since she took over the top of the Democratic ticket in July.

When Harris, and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, held a rally at a Detroit Metro Airport hangar on Aug. 7, they drew a crowd of 15,000, according to media reports — one of which attributed the number to Harris’ campaign.

Despite that, social media accounts supportive of the former president quickly began spreading the baseless claim that a photo from the rally was created or manipulated using artificial intelligence to manufacture a crowd. Trump himself amplified the claim, posting on his own platform, Truth Social, “There was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it, and showed a massive ‘crowd’ of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST!”

The crowd clearly existed, as is shown in the Getty Images photo above, and in multiple photos and videos reporting on the event.

Some of those who claimed that the photo was digitally created or altered — including the self-described “social media strategist” Chuck Callesto, whom Trump cited in his post — pointed to the lack of the crowd’s reflection in Harris’ plane, which parked near the hangar.

But  Hany Farid , a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in digital forensics,  explained  in a post on LinkedIn that the crowd wouldn’t be reflected in the belly of the plane, providing a 3D rendering of the location of the plane, crowd and camera. “[E]ven the large ‘crowd’ in my rendering manifests as only a tiny sliver in the reflective surface,” he said.

It’s also worth noting that the crowd wasn’t reflected in the belly of the plane in photos taken of some Trump rallies that have been held at similar venues.

Also, Farid analyzed the photo image with two computer models that can detect patterns associated with AI-generated images. “Both of these models reveal no evidence of AI-generation,” he wrote. “In addition, the text on the signs and plane show none of the usual signs of generative AI,” which can often garble the details in images.

So, the crowd was clearly present at Harris’ Detroit-area rally, and there’s no evidence to suggest that the image shown on social media was created or altered with AI. It was actually taken by a Harris campaign worker.

Israel Was Less Flexible in Recent Gaza Cease-Fire Talks, Documents Show

The country made five new demands, according to documents detailing its newest negotiating positions.

  • Share full article

Benjamin Netanyahu stands behind a lectern with several flags in the background.

By Ronen Bergman Patrick Kingsley and Adam Rasgon

Ronen Bergman reported from Tel Aviv, Patrick Kingsley from Jerusalem and Adam Rasgon from Doha, Qatar.

For weeks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has denied that he is trying to block a cease-fire deal in Gaza by hardening Israel’s negotiating position. Mr. Netanyahu has consistently placed all blame for the deadlocked negotiations on Hamas, even as senior members of the Israeli security establishment accused him of slowing the process himself.

But in private, Mr. Netanyahu has, in fact, added new conditions to Israel’s demands, additions that his own negotiators fear have created extra obstacles to a deal. According to unpublished documents reviewed by The New York Times that detail Israel’s negotiating positions, Israel relayed a list of new stipulations in late July to American, Egyptian and Qatari mediators that added less flexible conditions to a set of principles it had made in late May.

Doubts have also been raised about Hamas’s willingness to compromise on key issues, and the group also requested its own extensive revisions throughout the process, while ceding some smaller points in July. On Tuesday, Ahmad Abdul Hadi, a Hamas official, said the group would not be participating in a new round of negotiations set to take place in Doha or Cairo on Thursday.

But the documents reviewed by The Times make clear that the behind-the-scenes maneuvering by the Netanyahu government has been extensive — and suggest that agreement may be elusive at the talks set to begin this week.

Among other conditions, the latest document, presented to mediators shortly before a summit in Rome on July 28, suggested that Israeli forces should remain in control of Gaza’s southern border, a detail that was not included in Israel’s proposal in May. It also showed less flexibility about allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes in northern Gaza once fighting is halted.

Some members of the Israeli negotiating team fear that the new additions risked scuppering the deal, according to two senior officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Mexican drug lord ‘El Mayo’ Zambada says he was ambushed and kidnapped before being taken to the US

FILE - This image provided by the U.S. Department of State shows Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a historic leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. Zambada, who was taken into U.S. custody last week, made his second appearance in federal court in Texas on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024. (U.S. Department of State via AP)

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican drug cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada said he was ambushed and kidnapped when he thought he was going to meet the governor of the northern state of Sinaloa, then was taken against his will to the United States, according to a letter released Saturday by his lawyer.

In the two-page letter, Zambada said fellow drug lord Joaquín Guzmán López asked him to attend a meeting July 25 with local politicians, including Sinaloa Gov. Rubén Rocha Moya, from the ruling Morena party.

But he was led into a room where he was knocked down, a hood was placed over his head, he was handcuffed, and then taken in a pickup truck to a landing strip where he was forced into a private plane that finally took him and Guzmán López, one of the sons of imprisoned Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán , to U.S. soil, according to the letter.

Zambada’s comments were released a day after the U.S. ambassador to Mexico confirmed that the drug lord had been taken to the United States against his will , when he arrived in Texas in July on a plane along with Guzmán López.

The letter raised question about links between drug traffickers and some politicians in Sinaloa, the Pacific coast state that is the home base of the Sinaloa cartel, but the governor denied any links to the criminals and said he was not in Sinaloa that day. After the arrests, he had said he was in Los Angeles.

Image

“There is no complicity with crime,” Rocha said Saturday at an event in Culiacán alongside Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the country’s president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum.

“We have all the confidence in the governor,” López Obrador said.

Referring to his rivals, Rocha said, “They want to make me a narco by force.”

“If they said I was going to be there (at the meeting), they lied, and if he (Zambada) believed them, he fell into the trap,” the governor said.

Zambada’s letter didn’t say Rocha was at the meeting place.

It did say that at the site was Héctor Melesio Cuén, a former local congressman, former mayor of Culiacan and former rector of Sinaloa University, whom he described as “a long-time friend.” Mexican officials have said Cuén was murdered the same day, and Zambada’s letter said he was slain at the meeting place.

The trafficker said one of his security guards, who is now missing, was a commander of the judicial police of Sinaloa.

In early August, Zambada, 76, made his second appearance in U.S. federal court in Texas after being taken into U.S. custody the week before.

Guzmán López apparently had been in negotiations with U.S. authorities for a long time about possibly turning himself in. Guzmán López, 38, has pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and other charges in federal court in Chicago.

But U.S. officials said they had almost no warning when Guzmán López’s plane landed at an airport near El Paso. Both men were arrested and remain jailed . They are charged in the U.S. with various drug crimes.

Ken Salazar, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, said the plane took off from Sinaloa and filed no flight plan. He stressed that the pilot wasn’t American, nor was the plane.

The implication is that Guzmán López intended to turn himself in, and brought Zambada with him to procure more favorable treatment, but his motives remain unclear.

Zambada was considered the Sinaloa cartel’s strategist and was thought to be more involved in its day-to-day operations than his better-known and flashier boss, “El Chapo,” who was sentenced to life in prison in the U.S. in 2019.

Zambada’s faction of the Sinaloa cartel has been engaged in fierce fighting with another faction led by the sons of Guzmán .

Zambada was considered a good negotiator with his rivals and the most influential trafficker who “has been running extensive corruption networks across many administrations in Mexico,” said Vanda Felbab-Brown, a senior fellow in the Strobe Talbott Center for Security, Strategy and Technology at the Brookings Institution.

Zambada is charged in a number of U.S. cases , including in New York and California. Prosecutors brought a new indictment against him in New York in February, describing him as the “principal leader of the criminal enterprise responsible for importing enormous quantities of narcotics into the United States.”

The assignment letter, an editor’s best friend.

By Susan West & Michael Gold on January 26, 2012

Sure, you and the writer had a long talk when you commissioned that story idea. But two months later the manuscript is on your desk, and who can remember what the article was supposed to be? That’s where an assignment letter comes in handy. After you and a freelancer have agreed on a story, recap the discussion in writing and send your letter (or e-mail message) to the writer. It will help you get the piece you want.

Once you’ve read through the guidelines below, have a look at our sample letter (a downloadable PDF document).

WHY WRITE IT?

  • To build an editorial foundation for the story: A clear assignment letter puts you and the writer on the same wavelength. If your written description differs from the writer’s recollection, you have a chance to resolve the discrepancy before the first draft comes in. And when the manuscript arrives, the letter allows you to judge whether the writer delivered the story as promised. You can also circulate the letter to higher-ups to make sure they buy into the assignment and recall it later. When you distribute the manuscript to other editors for review, attach the letter so they too know what the idea was.
  • To build a relationship with a writer: Writers want clear instruction; an assignment letter provides that and gives the writer something to refer to while reporting and writing. A careful summary of the story idea assures the writer that you’re a careful editor who wants to prevent those nasty surprises that so often pop up between writer and editor. The letter also lets you address a writer’s weaknesses—get two sources for every fact, avoid clichés, and so on.

WHAT’S IN IT?

  • A clear, specific statement of the story’s concept, content, and approach: Quickly and specifically outline what the article will cover and the depth of information you expect, including perhaps the types of sources you desire (personal interviews, scientific studies, etc.). Send research materials you have collected. Enclose a sample story from your magazine that could serve as a model. Confirm the approach you have agreed to and, if you two have discussed them, outline the lead and structure.
  • Your worries: Is the reporting going to be difficult? Say so. Are you concerned about the structure? Ask to see an outline. Are there points that absolutely have to be covered? Make sure the writer knows.
  • Logistical information: Describe the magazine’s payment procedures, editing process, fact-checking needs; tell the writer if you’re going to be out of town and whether you prefer to work by phone or e-mail. You can create some of this information ahead of time to cut-and-paste into your assignment letters.

For more suggestions on working with writers, see our model rewrite letter and tips on getting the most from freelancers .

Governor Kelly, Attorney General Kobach issue bipartisan letter

Governor Kelly, Attorney General Kobach issue bipartisan letter

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Governor Laura Kelly and Attorney General Kris Kobach issued a bipartisan letter to the Nebraska Governor Friday.

The letter was to Jim Pillen, expressing their objection to Nebraska’s proposed Platte-Republican interbasin transfer.

“The proposed Platte-Republican interbasin transfer would severely damage Kansas’ finest fishing and boating destinations,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Places like Milford Lake are enjoyed by thousands of Kansas and Nebraskans alike. We cannot stand idly by while our state’s critical natural assets are put at risk.”

While under consideration by Nebraska’s Department of Natural Resources, the transfer would allow invasive carp species to enter Harlan County Reservoir in Nebraska and Lovewell and Milford Reservoirs in Kansas.

These fish have been known to cause devastating economic and ecological consequences to river basins around the country, harming native species, sport fishing, commercial fishing, and recreational boating wherever they are introduced.

“As an avid fisherman, I’m one of thousands of Kansans who enjoy our first-class lakes and waterways for fishing,” Attorney General Kris Kobach said. “I will use every tool available to keep these invasive species from harming Kansas waters.”

Kansas previously shared these concerns when Nebraska first considered an identical transfer application in 2018. Since then, the threat of invasive species, such as silverhead carp, entering the Republican River Basin has only grown more dire.

Recent data shows that invasive populations have expanded to just yards from the site of the proposed interbasin transfer.

“These species can decimate local fish populations and pose safety hazards for recreationalists in impacted rivers and lakes,” said Acting Secretary Christopher Kennedy, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. “Efforts in other states to eliminate these carp populations once they’ve established are costly and largely unsuccessful, making prevention critical wherever possible.”

Kansas also provided both written and oral testimony to the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources during the public hearing for the transfer on May 23, 2024.

In an elaborate social media post, wrestler Vinesh Phogat thanked and acknowledged all those that played a crucial part in her Paris Olympics 2024 journey. The star Indian grappler had become the first Indian woman wrestler to secure a place in an Olympic final before being disqualified for being 100 grams overweight in the Women's 50 kg Freestyle wrestling even in the 33rd Summer Games.

While Vinesh challenged that decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as she demanded that she be given a joint-silver medal, her plea was dismissed by the court. In an emotional letter, Vinesh remembered her childhood struggles and thanked all those who had a role to play in her Olympic journey. She emphasised "we did not give up" when describing the efforts made by the team to make her body touches the 50-kilograms mark at the time of the weigh in before the final. However, in her own words, "the time was not fair.

I can't predict what the future holds for me, and what awaits me in this journey next, but I am sure that I will continue to fight always for what I believe in and for the right thing," Vinesh wrote in the concluding part of that note.

Tim Walz's military record under scrutiny as he joins Kamala Harris on Democratic ticket

By James LaPorta

Updated on: August 9, 2024 / 12:40 AM EDT / CBS News

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz 's military record has come under renewed scrutiny following Vice President Kamala Harris' announcement of Walz as her running mate on the Democratic ticket.

On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, who is an Iraq War veteran, seized the opportunity to target his opponent's military record, resurfacing claims about his deployments and his retirement from the guard.

Walz served honorably in both the Nebraska and Minnesota Army National Guards, earning medals and deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. But his final days of service have been called into question, centering on his rank and if he retired to avoid a 2005 deployment to Iraq.

A CBS News review of Walz's military record and statements from the Minnesota Army National Guard show Walz achieved the rank of command sergeant major but was reduced in rank to master sergeant after retirement since he had not completed coursework for the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.

On Iraq, records show Walz had retired before his battalion was mobilized and deployed to Iraq. A 2005 statement from his website indicates Walz was initially prepared to deploy to Iraq amid his bid for Congress. CBS News has asked Walz for comment on when he decided to retire.

A snapshot of Walz in the military

Walz retired from the Minnesota Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery in 2005 after more than 24 years in service, the Minnesota Army National Guard told CBS News.

Walz first enlisted in the Nebraska Army National Guard in April 1981, serving as an infantry senior sergeant and administrative specialist. In 1996, Walz transferred to the Minnesota Army National Guard, where he first worked as a cannon crewmember and field artillery senior sergeant.

An undated photo of Tim Walz in uniform

Minnesota National Guard spokesperson Lt. Col. Kristen Augé told CBS News that Walz "held multiple positions within field artillery such as firing battery chief, operations sergeant, first sergeant, and culminated his career serving as the command sergeant major for the battalion."

Walz earned several Army commendation and achievement medals during his more than 24 years of service.

Walz deployed in August 2003 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Minnesota National Guard told CBS News the battalion supported security missions at various locations in Europe and Turkey. Walz was stationed at Vicenza, Italy, at the time and returned to Minnesota in April 2004.

Controversy over a 2005 Iraq deployment

On Wednesday, Vance resurfaced claims that Walz retired from the National Guard to avoid deploying to Iraq.

"When the United States Marine Corps, when the United States of America, asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country I did it. I did what they asked me to do, and I did it honorably and I'm very proud of that service," said Vance.

He added: "When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him — a fact that he's been criticized for aggressively by a lot of the people he served with."

The Harris-Walz campaign responded with a statement saying: "After 24 years of military service, Governor Walz retired in 2005 and ran for Congress, where he [served as the ranking member] of Veterans Affairs and was a tireless advocate for our men and women in uniform — and as Vice President of the United States he will continue to be a relentless champion for our veterans and military families." The statement incorrectly stated Walz chaired the Veterans Affairs committee.

The campaign also said, "In his 24 years of service, the Governor carried, fired and trained others to use weapons of war innumerable times. Governor Walz would never insult or undermine any American's service to this country -- in fact, he thanks Senator Vance for putting his life on the line for our country. It's the American way."

The claims raised by Vance first gained prominence when Walz ran for governor of Minnesota in 2018. At the time, retired Army veterans Thomas Behrends and Paul Herr, who both served as command sergeant majors, posted on Facebook a lengthy letter accusing Walz of "embellishing" his military career and abandoning his Army National Guard battalion ahead of a 2005 deployment to Iraq.

In the letter, Behrends and Herr write that in early 2005, Walz's unit — 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery — was slated to deploy to Iraq. At the time, Walz was serving as the unit's command sergeant major.

Behrends and Herr claimed that from the time the unit was told to prepare for an Iraq deployment and when Walz retired, he told other Army leaders he would be going to Iraq but later resigned his position before the deployment to avoid going to a combat zone.

Walz has said he left the guard to run for Congress, according to the Star Tribune . In 2006, Walz won his election to Congress against a six-term Republican incumbent.

Records show Walz officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Feb. 10, 2005.

In March 2005, the National Guard announced a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard, according to an archived press release from Tim Walz for U.S. Congress.

"I do not yet know if my artillery unit will be part of this mobilization and I am unable to comment further on the specifics of the deployment," said Walz in the March 2005 statement .

The statement continued: "As Command Sergeant Major I have a responsibility not only to ready my battalion for Iraq, but also to serve if called on. I am dedicated to serving my country to the best of my ability, whether that is in Washington DC or Iraq," said Walz, who indicated at the time he had no plans to drop out of the race. "I am fortunate to have a strong group of enthusiastic support and a very dedicated and intelligent wife. Both will be a major part of my campaign, whether I am in Minnesota or Iraq."

The Minnesota Army National Guard told CBS News that Walz retired on May 16, 2005. CBS News has asked Walz to clarify when he submitted his retirement papers.

The Minnesota National Guard told CBS News that Walz's unit — 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery — received an alert order for mobilization to Iraq on July 14, 2005 – two months after Walz retired, according to Lt. Col. Ryan Rossman, who serves as the Minnesota National Guard's director of operations. The official mobilization order was received on August 14 of the same year, and the unit mobilized in October.

CBS News reviewed the deployment history for the Minnesota Army National Guard which shows that in the fall of 2005, 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery was mobilized in preparation for a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion trained at Camp Shelby in Mississippi and deployed to Iraq as a motorized security task force.

In 2018, Tom Hagen, a military reservist who served in Iraq, wrote a letter to The Winona Daily News claiming Walz was not being candid about his service record and wanted people to know that the future Minnesota governor did not serve in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Walz responded in the same newspaper and criticized Hagan as dishonoring a fellow veteran, according to MPR News. Walz wrote: "There's a code of honor among those who've served, and normally this type of partisan political attack only comes from one who's never worn a uniform."

Joseph Eustice, a 32-year veteran of the guard who also led Walz's battalion, told CBS Minnesota that while he doesn't agree with Walz's politics, he does believe Walz's record in the military is sound.

"Tim Walz as a soldier, he was a good soldier. I don't think anyone can honestly say that he wasn't," Eustice said. "...He was a good leader in those 24 years that he served."

Walz's rank as a command sergeant major

Official biographies on the Minnesota government website and Vice President Kamala Harris' website  have described Walz as a "retired Command Sergeant Major." However, documents reviewed by CBS News show this is not accurate; while Walz served at one point as a command sergeant major, he retired at a lower rank.

Army veteran Anthony Anderson, who routinely obtains military records from the Defense Department using the Freedom of Information Act and has worked with CBS News on similar stories, provided Walz's records for review. CBS News has also requested the documents from the National Guard.

One of the documents shows Walz reverted back to master sergeant from command sergeant major when he retired from the Minnesota National Guard in May 2005.

Army soldiers promoted to the rank of sergeant major or command sergeant major are required to attend the Sergeants Major Course, or what was formerly known as the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.

Lt. Col. Augé, the Minnesota National Guard spokesperson, told CBS News that Walz retired as a master sergeant in 2005 for "benefit purposes" because he did not complete additional coursework at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.

While Walz can say he served as a command sergeant major in the Minnesota Army National Guard, his official biographies are incorrect in referring to him as a "retired Command Sergeant Major."

On Aug. 8, the campaign website updated its description of his service. It omits his rank upon retirement and now reads, "The son of an Army veteran who served as a command sergeant major, Walz was the ranking member on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, where he passed legislation to help stem veterans' suicides."

Editor's Note: This story has been updated to address an error in the statement from the Harris-Walz campaign.

How to do a Photography Alphabet Project

A Post By: Megan Kennedy

Do you remember the ransom notes left behind by kidnappers and villains in movies? The notes made up of different letters cut out of magazines? My first encounter with the concept of a ransom note was while watching a movie called Baby’s Day Out. The 1994 movie, aimed at kids, tells the story of a toddler kidnapped by three crooks disguised as photographers (funny, huh?). The kidnappers then leave a ransom note constructed from letters cut from magazines. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not encouraging kidnapping here, or any criminality for that matter. But this project does involve building up a photographic library of text, for artistic purposes only!

How to do a Photography Alphabet Project

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not encouraging kidnapping here, or any criminality for that matter. But this project does involve building up a photographic library of text, for artistic purposes only!

We encounter so much written language these days that it is often overlooked as a photographic subject. Written language in any environment is made up of an endless combination of fonts, colors, shapes, and applications. Of course, there are random text generators online, but automated programs won’t add anything to your photographic practice.

By scoping out letters in the field you’ll train your photographic senses to seek out unusual subjects, an invaluable skill for any photographer. By concentrating on an unusual yet familiar subject, you can build up an interesting and varied typographic library. It’s a great way to view the world through the written word.

How to do a Photography Alphabet Project

Some history of the alphabet

The first true alphabet was created roughly four thousand years ago in the land of Canaan. The alphabet, containing between 20-32 individual letters, didn’t contain any vowels so people had to guess what vowel sound followed each consonant based on what the word looked like. Despite this, the system worked and ended up replacing the complex system of Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The new alphabet meant that people didn’t need to memorize thousands of different symbols, allowing more people to communicate through the written word. The Greeks added vowels to the alphabet – creating the first alphabet with a letter to represent every sound in a language. From there, the alphabet spread to Italy where it evolved into the Latin alphabet. The English alphabet evolved after the Romans took the Latin language to Anglo-Saxons England, who amalgamated the Latin and runic alphabet.

Some letters are harder to find than others. For the letter Y, I had to get a bit more creative – borrowing the registration from an aircraft overhead.

What you will need

One of the great things about this project is that it doesn’t require any special equipment. You can simply grab your camera and you are good to go! However, there are a few items that you can pack to make your trip a little easier.

Bring along a folded piece of paper and a pen to take a tally of the letters you photograph. This way you won’t have to constantly scroll through the photos you have taken previously to check if you’ve stocked up on a particular letter. This is also useful when tracking numbers or upper and lower-case letters you’ve photographed. To separate the tally of each letter more easily, I use a highlighter. That way you won’t get mixed up or add a mark under the wrong letter.

Scouting for letters

How to do a Photography Alphabet Project

A rusty bus zone sign makes for an unusual addition to your alphabet stockpile.

How to do a Photography Alphabet Project

Like many subjects, once you start looking for something, you become attuned to the sight of it. This honing-in on detail is an invaluable skill for photographers, who often have to decipher both the detail and greater landscape simultaneously.

For starters, try collecting letters to make up a phrase. Then go on to building the whole alphabet. The more variety the better. As an extra challenge, try photographing a different source for each letter or add numbers to the mix.

I found plenty of material from traffic and warning signs alone. You may notice that many signs are made up of eye-catching colors. Red and yellow shades draw attention, so they are commonly used for warnings. By incorporating these bright colors into your collage, you’ll create a very attractive composition. You could even photograph the labels on tins and packets of food. Though if you’re doing this in a supermarket or grocer, be sure to check with the manager first.
