Good Deeds Essay

A good deed can be defined as helping someone without expecting something in return. Doing good deeds is important for all of us. It helps us to become better people. It affects our lives and the lives of other people (for whom good deeds are performed) positively. It’s our moral responsibility to help others.

Good deeds are also done thinking if we will do good to others, good will come in return to us. It’s a belief that motivates us to do good to others.

When we do good to someone, it inspires him/her to do good, help others as he/she received well. This way it affects our society as a whole and makes it a better place to live.

Good deeds can be done in a variety of ways. We can feed poor people, help orphans, teach poor children, help people with disabilities, donate money and other basic goods to NGOs, help the homeless, feed the street dogs, etc.

We should help others as much as possible. When each one of us will do so, it will make a huge difference and make this place a happy world.

A Good Deed

“A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.”

A Good Deed is one act, big or small, of kindness which makes life a wee bit easier for someone other than you. Acts of kindness can be so many that you actually do not have to plan it or think about it too much. All you need to do is be good at heart and when the occasion presents itself be sure to act. It is not good enough to be moved by the miseries of others without pitching in to help. A good deed is something that should come naturally to you, so much so that you do not think about it after it is done. Helping a child cross the road, stopping to give directions to a person who is lost, running errands for your old neighbor, soothing a hurt child….the list of good deeds are endless.

Small niceties lead to good deeds. If you give someone the right of way or smile when you enter an elevator, you are being polite and soon, this very habit of just being nice will be synonymous with just being “you” and unknowingly, you will be doing many good deeds without effort and without any expectations whatsoever. Just think how much better this world will be because of you!

P5 / P6 Composition model A good deed

This week we worked on the theme of  A Good Deed .

Now most of my students would pick the 2nd picture and write about saving an abused/lost dog. Kids are drawn to animals!

Knowing this, I decided to plan the composition for them this time.

I wanted to show them :

1) How we could link up Pictures 1 & 3 together in a story

2) How we could move away from the ‘usual’ story content that most students love to write about

3) How to develop a central character (Mrs Tan) & how she changes over the course of the story

4) Synonyms for the word ‘grumpy’ when describing Mrs Tan

5) Different phrases that we can use to express gratitude aside from ‘Thank you”.

Below is the story plan.

A Good Deed Pictures 1 & 3

Introduction : dialogue.

• “Stop destroying my plants you naughty children!” shrieked Mrs Tan.

Describe Mrs Tan, your elderly, grumpy neighbour

• cantankerous, crabbed, cross, edgy, grouchy, grumbling, huffy, ill-tempered, irritable, liverish, peevish, petulant, querulous, ratty , sulky, sullen, surly, testy, tetchy
• she had many potted plants that were near the basketball court
• always screamed at us when the ball bounced near her plants
• disliked by all the children
• Walking home from school
• Mrs Tan was a few feet ahead of me
• Suddenly tripped over a large rock and fell
• Stood stock still a moment, contemplating walking away from her
• Mother always said a compassionate heart is the most important quality anyone can have
• Ran to help her up
• Whimpering in pain and her arm was twisted in an awkward angle
• Took her to the clinic and doctor said she had broken her arm
• Helped her home and could not wait to leave
• However, I saw her crying helplessly so I made her a cup of tea and helped her to wash the dishes in the sink
• Found some instant noodles in the cupboard and cooked it for her
• While she was eating, I cleaned up her home
• When I left, I told her that I would return the next day after school to check on her
• Told mother what had happened that evening
• Mother beamed at me and said that my kindness would always be remembered by Mrs Tan
• Every day after school I watered her plants and washed her dishes and tidied her house
• Mother prepared food for her daily
• Mrs Tan became a changed woman
• She smiled more often and told me stories about the time when she was a child in Singapore
• When she got better she would bake cookies for the children in the neighbourhood and we would help water her plants
• I learnt a valuable lesson from this incident. I will always remember what Mrs Tan had said to me when she was better. She had held my hand and thanked me for my good deed, saying that if the world had more people like me it would be a better place. I was happy to have helped Mrs Tan. The good deed was the reward itself.

A Good Deed Composition Model Answer

Note to students

The model compositions in this blog are to help students generate ideas and to be used as a guide. Students are not allowed to copy the model compositions and then pass them off as their own work, especially in school. It is called plagiarism.

The composition is written by one of my P6 students, Gerald. While there were better ones in terms of accurate grammar, I loved the humour and added descriptions that he had incorporated in his story. (I have typed it out because the scan did not come out as clearly as I would have liked.) The composition was written in 50 mins.

“Stop destroying my plants you annoying little brats!” shrieked Mrs Tan. My friends and I quickly ran where she was not able to see us. Mrs. Tan was my old, cantankerous neighbour. She was disliked by all the children in the neighbourhood. She was the most ill-tempered, cross and crabby person you could ever meet. Mrs. Tan had many plotted plants near the basketball court and was always screaming her head off at us when the ball bounced near her plants.

“I wonder what mum is preparing for dinner? I hope its…” My thoughts were abruptly interrupted by an old woman glaring at me. Mrs. Tan started advancing towards me. Suddenly, she tripped over a large rock and landed with a ‘Crack’ sound on her arm. I stood still for a moment, contemplating walking away from her. Then a voice which was all too familiar in my mind said ,”A compassionate heart is the most important quality anyone can have.” Heaving a heavy sigh, I walked over to her and helped her up. Mrs. Tan was whimpering in pain and her arm was twisted in an awkward angle. Immediately I brought her to the nearby clinic for a check up. “She has a broken her arm and will take at least two months for it to heal,” said the doctor worriedly. Mrs. Tan had a cast on her arm after the visit to the clinic.

I brought her home and could not wait to leave! However, I felt pity as Mrs. Tan cried helplessly so I made her a soothing cup of barley tea and reluctantly helped her to wash the dishes in the sink. I found some instant noodles in the cupboard and cooked it for her. She ate them ravenously while I helped clean her house.

“I will be back tomorrow after school to check on you, okay?”I said while leaving the house. She nodded thankfully and continued enjoying her instant noodles.

I trudged home as slow as a snail due to the tiring amount of housework at Mrs. Tan’s house. When I finally arrived home, I noticed mom glaring at me. “Where have you been? I have been worried sick! It’s already 7.23pm!” mum questioned. I related what had happened that evening as mother beamed at me and said that my kindness would always be remembered by Mrs. Tan. Then, she cooked dinner for me and I gulped down the food whole.

The next day, I started off my Thursday with my usual cereal. Finally, school ended and I rushed off to Mrs. Tan’s house. Somehow, Mrs. Tan turned over a new leaf and became a changed woman. From that day, she smiled more and often and told me stories about the time when she was a child in Singapore in the 1950s. Everyday after school, I would water her plants and wash her dishes and tidy her house. When she got better, she baked delicious chocolate chip cookies for the children in the neighbourhood.

I learnt a valuable lesson from the incident. I will always remember what Mrs. Tan had said to me when she was better. She had held my hand and thanked me for my good deed that faithful day when she had fallen down. She said that if the world had more helpful people like me, it would be a better place. I was happy that I had helped Mrs. Tan. The reward was in the good deed itself.

Instructions

• Begin this activity by asking students the following questions:  • What is a “good deed”? • Can you share about a good deed that you have witnessed or participated in? (either as the one performing the good deed, or the one benefiting from one) • Why do people perform a good deed? • Sometimes, people perform "good deeds" to support their community after a traumatic event, or in honor of people who were affected by the event. For example, in the United States, after the events of September 11, 2001, people volunteered for organizations like the Red Cross, and gathered and distributed supplies to survivors and first responders. In Japan, after the earthquake and tsunami in 2011, people helped clear debris and rebuilt homes and other structures. Can you think of any examples in our community? As students share their responses, write them down on a physical or digital board that is visible to everyone. ‍
• Guide students to understand that a good deed is an action that is selfless and done to benefit others. It is motivated by a desire to help or care for others, rather than seeking recognition or praise. Good deeds require empathy, which means that we consider others’ feelings and experiences, and take action to help them in a way that is meaningful to them. To continue exploring empathy, show this video to students.  Some additional examples of good deeds are: • Helping a friend or sibling do their homework • Donating clothes you’ve outgrown, or a bicycle you no longer ride • Helping your parents around the house by doing “extra” chores • Reaching out to someone you care about or haven’t spoken to in a while, and asking them how they are doing  • Inviting someone who seems lonely to sit with you and your friends during lunch • Picking up litter outside or cleaning up a park with your family • Making “thank you” cards for first responders, firefighters, or healthcare workers • Gathering toiletries (i.e., toothpaste, shampoo, and soap), clothing, and food items, and donating them to a local shelter for people who are experiencing homelessness  ‍
• Engage students in a Think-Pair-Share exercise. Students should: • Think individually about good deeds that they can perform for others, and write down 4-5 ideas. • Pair with someone sitting near them and share their ideas with each other. Students should help their partner identify which action would have the greatest impact on someone, while still being feasible to perform. If there are any obstacles that these ideas may present, each pair should also discuss strategies for reducing or eliminating those obstacles. • Share their final ideas with the rest of the class, as you write them down on a physical or digital board. ‍ ‍ During the last step, help students identify common goals or themes that overlap with the ideas that they identified. For example, there may be similarities in how they want to:  • Be an ally for people who are typically marginalized or treated unfairly • Protect the local environment and the plants and animals who live there, or • Express gratitude for community members and frontline workers  If you notice that several students have shared goals, and could benefit from sharing resources with each other, consider placing them in groups to perform their good deeds together. For example, a group of students could work together to gather items for a local shelter or food pantry.  Alternatively, if students have simpler ideas, they can perform their good deeds individually.  ‍
• Distribute a copy of the “ Student Pledge Card ” to each student, which prompts them to write down a “good deed”  (their #IWill Pledge) that they will promise to complete as an expression of kindness and compassion. Students should keep their pledge cards as a reminder of their promise, or you may want to display these cards in your classroom. Encourage students to fulfill their pledges (either individually, with their families, or as a group, depending on the complexity of their ideas).  ‍
• Facilitate a closing reflection by asking the following questions:  • How did empathy play a role in your good deed? How did considering others’ feelings and experiences help you decide on your approach? • How did you feel when you performed your good deed? • What impact do you think your good deed had on the person or community that you tried to help? Do you feel more connected to them after this experience? • Did you encounter any challenges or unexpected situations? How did you handle them? • What did you learn about yourself through this experience? • What are some good deeds that you would like to perform in the future? ‍

Use a platform such as Google Meet, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams which allows you to screen-share during a video call.  One educator should set up the Kahoot! game and share the code with students in both classes by following this tutorial about using Kahoot! in a remote learning environment, and share their screen so everyone can follow along.

If students in either class don’t have individual devices...

Follow the same instructions above, with one educator starting the game and sharing their screen so both classes can follow along.   Instead of students joining the game to answer the questions, they can hold up their fingers, call out their answer, or use a paper template to indicate their response.

Any act someone performs out of the kindness of their heart, without expecting anything in return , can be called a “ good deed .” Many good deeds are a form of charity (helping the less fortunate), but this is not always the case.

The phrase “ good deed ” also has a legal meaning. “Deed” refers to a legal document by which property ownership is transferred in that case. A “good deed” is one attached to a title in good standing.

The phrases “ good deeds ” and “ good works ” have meant “ acts of piety ” for around 700 years now. Being pious means being religiously devout, and pious people are typically committed to high moral standards.

All major religions call on believers to help those less fortunate and to engage in acts of charity. This is likely how “good deeds” came to refer to selfless acts someone performs out of kindness, without expecting anything in return.

The phrase slowly lost its religious connotations over time. “Good deeds” has meant “ any selfless act done to serve others ” since the early 20 th century .

In modern English, “doing something nice or helpful for others” is synonymous with the phrase “good deed.”

Phrases Similar to Good Deeds

Would you like to avoid the phrase “good deeds” for whatever reason? Instead, you can say:

A good deed

One day me and my friend Amit were walking back from school. Suddenly, a car raced down the bend and ran over a stray puppy. The car owner sped away despite hearing the little puppy yelping in pain. The puppy was limping badly; he kept trying to stand up in vain.

Amit managed to stop another car. The car owner agreed to drop us at the vet. I carried Amit’s school bag while he carried the puppy. When we reached the vet, we suddenly realized we didn’t have any money. However, the Doc kindly agreed to do us a favour. We waited for half an hour while he tended to him. Meanwhile, we called Mom and Dad and they came to pick us up. Mom and Dad said that we had made them proud that day by doing such a good deed. They surprised us by agreeing to let us keep the puppy. Our good deed had saved the puppy, but it had also made it possible for us to have a puppy.

A good deed is something you do out of pure kindness. It’s about doing the right thing . These kind gestures or random acts of kindness can be little or big things you do for others such as bringing someone soup when sick or cutting your neighbour’s lawn.

The point of a good deed is to give – without seeking anything in return.

A good deed is not about looking good to others. It is simple and pure – to simply give, be kind and make things easier for others.

This can be tiny good deeds or large acts of kindness that help individuals, communities or our entire world.

• Buy a coffee for the person behind you in line
• Cut your neighbour’s lawn or shovel their driveway in the winter

• Smile at passers-by – it’s a simple thing 🙂
• Shop at a small local bookstore instead of online

• Clean your room without being asked
• Write thank you notes for gifts you receive
• Call your aunties, grandma, godparents and anyone else who loves you
• If you see someone being bullied, stand up for them
• Become friends with the new kid in school

Good Deeds For The Environment

• Go vegan to support the environment and reduce animal cruelty – learn about veganism with these documentaries
• Pick up litter in your community and dispose of it properly
• Always recycle – and make note of the items that don’t go in the recycling to do your best not to purchase them in the future
• Don’t use single-use plastic such as plastic bottles or plastic bags  – instead always have a water bottle and reusable shopping bags on hand
• Take public transport to reduce pollution

• Put up a bird feeder and feed the birds – in your own backyard or in your neighbourhood (make sure to use bird seed, not white bread that isn’t good for birds)

• Compost any food waste you do have – many cities have a ‘green bin’ program like where I live – but if not purchase a compost bin – here’s an amazing compost for your kitchen
• Use environmentally friendly, cruelty-free products – personal care, household cleaners
• Grow your own food
• Shop second-hand 
• Carpool 
• Use a rain barrel to water your garden
• Eat local produce
• Support your local farmer’s market
• Plant a wildflower garden – flowers that bees and butterflies love
• Turn off lights, and electronics when not in use
• Shut off the water when brushing your teeth
• Reuse household items – scrap paper, old magazines, glass food containers, bags, newspaper
• Take a reusable mug to the coffee shop as most coffee cups can’t be recycled due to the lining of plastic inside
• When spending time in nature, leave no trace that you were there – especially when camping
• Share your environmental habits with others to encourage them to do the same
• Walk instead of driving – especially if you’re just popping to the shops around the corner
• Don’t use plastic produce bags at the store – option for the reusable version or do without
• Be mindful of your paper use – i.e. use washable rags instead of paper towels

I am trying to learn ENGLISH and facing difficulties. but i am trying to explain some thing. one day my mom says me you must have kindness about peoples related or not related you and explain some thing about kindness after that day in my mind always remembers my mom words and start next morning kindness to peoples, I say to my mom in break fast thanks mom and when i drop in school and say to driver thanks and say good morning to my school gate keeper and also my madom and all my class fellows and i meet with all with smiling face and say to every body else 'thank you' for their cooperation with me or any thing else. I help my class falows with their class work and help my madom with their class working. I help with my mom and dad with their home works. I help with my brother and sisters with their home work. I give 2 times morning and evening foods to australian birds 26 which i have in a cage. I enjoy meself and very setisfy. after one month i am on bed due to my illness and my mom and dad check up with doctor and take some medicines. i am on bed atleast 15 days but in these days every body care me my mom dad, sister brother even my class falows and my class madom even my school van driver and school gate keeper. every body care me and feeling me about non meet of mine at school, van and in class warry about me. I feel kindness is very important thing which make every body love with you and get togather and joind.

Try to think of a single act of kindness you can explain in detail, then elaborate on that. Remember, if you can't think of anything for 2008, you can always use one from 2007 or 2006 and just change the details a bit. Or, if you haven't done any good deeds, you are of course free to invent one.
