Graduate School admission is handled by individual academic departments; see the specific college, school and program sections for details. For more information, visit Graduate School Admissions .

Application Procedures

Students seeking admission to a CU Boulder master's or doctoral program apply directly to the appropriate department. An applicant for admission must present complete application materials, including:

  • the graduate application, available online at Graduate School Admissions ,
  • unofficial transcripts for all academic work completed to date,
  • a non-refundable application fee (currently $60 for domestic applicants and $80 for international applicants),
  • three or four letters of recommendation (please check with your program to obtain the required number of recommendations needed), and
  • test scores and other materials as required by specific departments.

A completed application must be submitted by the published deadline for the term for which admission is sought. Most departments have an application deadline that is several months before the start of the desired admission term.

Admission Requirements

Regular degree students, provisional degree students, bachelor’s–accelerated master’s degree programs, dual degree programs, nondegree students to regular degree status, former and suspended students, students transferring from other cu campuses, students changing major departments.

Qualified students may be recommended for admission to regular degree status by approved programs of the Graduate School provided they meet the following criteria:

  • They hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
  • They show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by their scholastic record.
  • They have had adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
  • They have at least a 2.75 (on a 4.00 scale) undergraduate GPA (for engineering, 3.00). (Note: Applicants who cannot meet criterion 4 may still secure regular admission if they have completed 9 credit hours of relevant graduate coursework with at least a 3.25 average.)
  • They meet additional requirements for admission established by the major department.

Students who do not meet the requirements for admission as regular degree students may be recommended for provisional degree status by their major department. With the concurrence of the dean of the Graduate School, these students are admitted for a probationary term of either one or two semesters of full-time study (or the equivalent for part-time students). At the end of the specified probationary period, provisional degree students must be either admitted to regular degree status or dismissed from the graduate program. Provisional students are subject to the same standards of performance required of regular degree students, plus any other requirements imposed by the program faculty as conditions of admission.

Credit hours earned by persons in provisional degree status may count toward a degree at CU Boulder.

To meet the standard terms of provisional admission, the student must generally complete 12 credit hours in two semesters (or equivalent for part-time students) with a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Program faculty may recommend additional or alternative conditions as appropriate.

A number of CU Boulder departments offer bachelor’s–accelerated master’s (BAM) degree programs, which enable CU undergraduate students to pursue undergraduate and graduate programs simultaneously and to receive both degrees in a shorter time period than it would take to pursue them separately.

Highly qualified undergraduate students may be recommended for admission to a BAM degree program at the end of their sophomore year or the beginning of their junior year. Such students are not formally admitted to the Graduate School. Standards for admission as well as eligibility to remain in the program are specified by each department.

The Graduate School, in conjunction with the faculty of each department and the deans of schools and colleges where appropriate, approves dual degree programs that combine previously approved graduate degree programs in two areas or departments.

Qualified graduate students may be recommended for admission to an approved dual degree program upon meeting the qualifications of each graduate program and any special qualifications as outlined by each program's approved guidelines. Minimum standards and qualifications for admission and continuation are specified by each department. Students wishing to complete degrees in more than one department that have no approved dual degree program or interdisciplinary major combination must complete all the requirements for both degrees with no shared or overlapping coursework.

Students with nondegree status applying to a graduate degree program should talk to the academic department about specific resident requirements before applying to the program. The maximum amount of work that may be transferred to CU Boulder depends upon the graduate degree sought; individual departments may have more restrictive limits. Learn more about transfer of credit on the Graduate School’s admissions page .

Students who were previously admitted to a graduate degree program but who did not complete that degree and who have not been continuously registered at CU Boulder must complete the following steps before being readmitted:

  • Clarify their status with the department to determine their eligibility to return and pursue the same degree.
  • Submit a Graduate Readmit application to the department (departmental approval is required) before enrollment levels are met or deadlines passed for the term in which they expect to return to CU Boulder.

A regular degree student who is dismissed for failure to maintain a 3.00 GPA is eligible to apply for readmission after one year. Approval or rejection of this application rests jointly with the student's major department and the dean of the Graduate School. The final decision will be made by the dean based on the recommendations of the department.

Students transferring from another CU campus to CU Boulder must apply to and be accepted by the Boulder campus.

Students who want to change major departments must apply to and be accepted by the new department. When adding a second major in an approved interdisciplinary major combination, students should contact their home department for instructions on this process.

Please comment on your commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion within the program and growth in cultural responsiveness, and how any of your experiences and/or interests might contribute to fostering a culture of inclusion in the program.

Alternatively, send via standard mail: Graduate Admissions, University of Colorado Denver, Campus Box 167, PO Box 173364, Denver, CO 80217. Express Delivery (that requires a receiver signature): Graduate Admissions, University of Colorado Denver, 1201 Larimer Street Suite 1005, Denver, CO 80204
  • Application Fee : $50 for US citizens; $75 for international students. Until the fee is received, your application will not be officially submitted. There are many ways applicants may be eligible for an Application Fee Waiver. Requests for waivers must be submitted at least 1 week before the final application deadline. For a list of who may be eligible for a waiver please see  Diversity and Equity - Graduate Programs at CU Denver (ucdenver.edu) . For the link to the form to apply for a waiver, see:  https://application.admissions.ucdenver.edu/register/applicationfeewaiverform   Contact [email protected] if you have questions regarding an application fee waiver.
  • International Students  - The additional admissions requirements for international students can be found at  CU Denver International Graduate Admissions.  Conditional admission is not offered.

The CHP Program does not send individual confirmation to students regarding receipt of applications. We do review all complete applications sent to us from Graduate Admissions. The admissions committee reviews all applications to the CHP Program from the November 15 application deadline through mid-January. Again, we do not individually notify each applicant that they are being reviewed.

Initial invitations begin mid December to late January, but additional invitations may continue to be made through the entire duration of the process (typically until April 15th). About 20 of the around 200 individuals who apply to the program each year are invited for one of the two interview dates in February. Interview invitations are made by phone calls or emails from faculty directly to those applicants.

After the interviews, 5-6 applicants are chosen to receive an offer of admission to the CHP Program. Offers of admission are made by phone calls or emails from faculty directly to those applicants. Allowing for the time needed for programs to decide upon and issue offers of admission, and for applicants to accept or decline those offers, the CHP Program generally has received acceptance forms and knows the composition of its incoming cohort by early April. However, the final deadline for decisions from applicants who have been given an offer is April 15th. If an applicant declines an offer on April 15th, it is possible that the program will make additional offers after that time. After the final class is determined, the program begins to send notices to all applicants regarding final decisions.

We may ask for additional information beyond your application at various stages of the above process to help us make our decisions.

A maximum of 24 credit hours of transfer course work may be applied toward the doctoral degree though the program does not guarantee that any transfer credits will necessarily be accepted. Decisions must be made on a course by course, case by case basis. Transfer credit is defined by the Graduate School as any credit earned at another accredited institution in the United States, or credits earned as a non-degree student within the University of Colorado system. All transfer courses must meet the following criteria:

  • The courses are recommended for transfer by the Program Director, the course instructor(s), and the student's primary advisor for transfer and are approved by the Graduate School Dean.
  • The courses are graduate level (5000 or above).
  • The student received a grade of B or better (no pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory grades are transferable).
  • The courses were completed within five years of the student's request for transfer.

In some instances the Program Director, course instructor(s), or student's primary advisor may accept the transfer of credits only if additional requirements are satisfied that demonstrate the student's competence in the subject matter under consideration. Determination of these requirements is at the discretion of the Program Director, course instructor(s), or student's primary advisor and will be decided on a case by case basis.

View, manage, and install add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

When you enable an add-in, it adds custom commands and new features to Microsoft 365 programs that help increase your productivity. Because add-ins can be used by attackers to do harm to your computer, you can use add-in security settings to help protect yourself.

Note:  This article only applies to Microsoft 365 applications running on Windows.

View installed add-ins

Screenshot of the add-ins in Office from Home tab.

You can directly install add-ins from this page or select  More Add-ins  to explore.

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to view the details for and right-click to select  Add-in details  option.

Click a heading below for more information .

Add-in categories explained

Active Application Add-ins      Add-ins registered and currently running on your Microsoft 365 program.

Inactive Application Add-ins      These are present on your computer but not currently loaded. For example, XML schemas are active when the document that refers to them is open. Another example is the COM add-in: if a COM add-in is selected, the add-in is active. If the check box is cleared, the add-in is inactive.

Document Related Add-ins      Template files referred to by open documents.

Disabled Application Add-ins     These add-ins are automatically disabled because they are causing Microsoft 365 programs to crash.

Add-in      The title of the add-in.

Publisher      The software developer or organization responsible for creating the add-in.

Compatibility      Look here for any compatibility issues.

Location      This file path indicates where the add-in is installed on your computer.

Description This text explains the add-in function.

Note:  Microsoft Outlook has one add-in option in the Trust Center: Apply macro security settings to installed add-ins . InfoPath has no security settings for add-ins.

Permanently disable or remove an add-in

To disable or remove an add-in follow these steps:

Select  File > Get Add-ins . Alternatively, you can select  Home > Add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to remove and right click to select  Remove  option.

View or change add-in settings

You can see and change add-in settings in the Trust Center, descriptions of which are in the following section. Add-in security settings may have been determined by your organization so not all options may be available to change.

Select  File  >  Get Add-ins .

Select  More Add-ins > Manage My Add-ins.

Select  Trust Center  >  Trust Center Settings  >  Add-ins.

Check or uncheck the boxes you want.

Add-in settings explained

Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted Publisher      Check this box to have the Trust Center check that the add-in uses a publisher's trusted signature. If the publisher's signature hasn’t been trusted, the Microsoft 365 program doesn’t load the add-in, and the Trust Bar displays a notification that the add-in has been disabled.

Disable notification for unsigned add-ins (code will remain disabled)      When you check the Require Application Extensions to be signed by Trusted Publisher box, this option is no longer grayed out. Add-ins signed by a trusted publisher are enabled, but unsigned add-ins are disabled.

Disable all Application Add-ins (may impair functionality)      Check this box if you don't trust any add-ins. All add-ins are disabled without any notification, and the other add-in boxes are grayed out.

Note:  This setting takes effect after you exit and restart your Microsoft 365 program.

While working with add-ins, you may need to learn more about digital signatures and certificates , which authenticate an add-in, and trusted publishers , the software developers who often create add-ins.

Manage and install add-ins

Use the following instruction to manage and install add-ins.

To install a new add-in:

You can directly install popular add-ins on the page or go to More Add-ins  to explore.

Select the add-in and select  Add . Or browse by selecting  Store  tab in the Office add-in dialog to find other add-ins to install and select Add for that add-in.

To manage your add-ins:

Select  File > Get Add-ins and from the bottom, select More Add-ins.  Or select  Home  >  Add-ins > More add-ins.

In the Office dialog, select My Add-ins tab. If you are not able to see your add-ins, select  Refresh to reload your add-ins.

Select  Manage My Add-in  to manage and select  Upload to browse and add an add-in from your device.

How to cancel a purchased add-in

If you've subscribed to an add-in through the Microsoft 365 Store that you don't want to continue, you can cancel that subscription.

Open the Microsoft 365 application and go to the Home  tab of the ribbon.

Select  Add-ins  and then select  More Add-ins > My Add-ins tab   to view your existing add-ins.

Select the app you want to cancel and select  Manage My Add-ins .

Under the Payment and Billing section choose Cancel Subscription .

Select  OK and then Continue .

Once that's complete you should see a message that says "You have cancelled your app subscription" in the comments field of your apps list.

Why is my add-in crashing?

Some add-ins might not be compatible with your organization's IT department policies. If that is the case with add-ins recently installed on your Microsoft 365 program, Data Execution Prevention (DEP) will disable the add-in and the program might crash.
