Find helpful tools and gadgets

Because neurodivergent people often need visual prompts or sensory tools, it is helpful to figure out what works best for you. Maybe you need a quiet fidget to use under your desk in class to help you focus. Maybe you need to incorporate the use of timers throughout your day. If you struggle with time blindness, you can use hourglasses to help you visualize time. Perhaps you struggle with extraneous sounds and need to use noise-cancelling headphones. More and more tools and gadgets are being made for neurodiverse individuals that can help you throughout law school.

Find the best time to be productive

Society can dictate when you are supposed to be most productive. See the traditional 9-5 work schedule. However, that model does not always work best for neurodiverse individuals. Some people are not morning people, and that is fine. Figure out when you have the most energy during your day to be your most productive self.

Identify your organizational system

Find one system to use for organization and don’t change it. Trying too many organizational systems can become overwhelming. If your phone calendar works best, use that. If you are a list person, write all the lists. If you are a planner person, find the coolest one to use throughout the school year.

Write everything down

It would be nice to think that you can remember every task or deadline, but let’s be honest, that’s probably not true. Write down every deadline, every task, meeting, assignment, important date, etc. in the organizational system that you use.

Figure out your maximum focus time

Just like you can only put so much gasoline in a car, most neurodiverse individuals only have so much room in their focus tank. Figure out how long you can truly focus and apply yourself to a task before you need a break. That amount of time is typically shorter for neurodiverse individuals. If you can only truly focus for 20 minutes, study for 20 minutes, take a break, and then come back for another 20 minutes.

Find your friends

You may have started law school with your mind full of horror stories. Throw them out the window. Most of the people you attend law school with are genuinely kind and helpful people. Try to find a group or a couple of people that you can trust and lean on when necessary. Your law school friends can help you stay on task, body double, and even provide notes on the days you may be struggling. These friends can be one of your greatest assets throughout your law school journey.

Be honest with your professors

Only discuss your neurodivergence with your professors to the extent that you are comfortable. If there are things you are concerned about related to your neurodivergence, it can be beneficial to make your professors aware at the beginning of the semester. Whether you are worried about cold calling or need a topic broken down, most professors love opportunities to discuss their area of law! They can’t know that you may need help if you don’t let them know. This is especially important if you aren’t successful in getting accommodations from your school’s Disability Services.

Trust your methods

As a neurodivergent student, you may not fit the traditional mold of all the things a law student is “supposed to do” in order to be successful. You have been in school for years, and now is the time to trust yourself and not be afraid to be an “outside of the box” law student. There is no harm in trying new study methods, but never fear going back to your personal basics. If you need help figuring those out, see if your law school has a learning center or faculty member that can assist you.

Beyond basic research: How to become a super sleuth

legal research certificate programs

by Monica Smith

article key points

Beyond the basic, first of its kind, build a case, career advancement.

FIU College of Law offers a research certificate fully online to equip individuals for specialized legal research, regardless of industry.

Rigorous and methodical research is at the heart of courtroom wins and policy changes. It is also a major driving force behind shrewd decisions in the most effective organizations. Despite the incredible importance of research, there is a void in training legal researchers who understand how to wield the newest technology and access new databases. FIU’s College of Law aims to change this with a fully online Advanced Legal Research Certificate .

Lisa Davis

“It’s all about efficiency,” says Lisa Davis, assistant director for digital initiatives at FIU’s College of Law. She explains that a simple internet search will not return vital information on cases, statutes and state laws. Knowing where to look and how to access digital databases is fundamental.

“Research is the number-one place that law firms lose money, and it can be thousands upon thousands of dollars,” she stresses.

Davis points out that there are specific steps to help leverage all of the data and understand the ways it can be filtered and accessed to get the results needed.

Research methods, while taught in law school, usually occur in the first year. By the time a student graduates, those basic skills may be forgotten, and technology may have changed.  However, the in-depth program is not just for law school graduates. It’s open to all disciplines and is designed for those who work in Florida as librarians, solo attorneys, paralegals, journalists or anyone who works in a field or department related to law.

“This certificate program is more than a refresher, it goes well beyond basic research,” affirms Davis, who describes the extensive databases that can be used to find law, ordinances and personal information. The program exposes students to the multitude of specialized resources available beyond an internet search, she clarifies.

According to Davis, the Advanced Legal Research Certificate program, the first of its kind in Florida, is essential, even critical, for anyone in the legal field. There is a great necessity for compelling, objective or empirical research data to help drive organizations to sound decision making. These research skills can be incredibly expensive if contracted to an outside vendor. Solo attorneys cannot afford law researchers and must expedite time for cases—medium sized firms may be able to farm some research requests out, but it is still costly.

The research skills learned through the program allow students to build a case or roadmap for counsel to present in court, Davis describes. She notes that students can enroll anytime to the completely online, 10-week program. The program is self-paced and asynchronous, so students can log on whenever and wherever to complete the modules—it’s also affordable at $699, she adds.

Jannette Pineiro

“Hunting and pecking are inefficient strategies. There is a major disparity between the results and how to get there,” expounds Davis, and Jannette Pineiro agrees. A personal injury attorney for the law office of Daniel B. Reinfeld in Hollywood, FL, Pineiro states the program made her a better, more efficient lawyer.

“From the economic standpoint, they teach you free platforms that you can benefit from,” says Pineiro. “Litigation is very demanding in terms of time and it is really an asset for my job to be able to do things in a timely manner—I know where to look and what to do in a better way.”

Pineiro recounts a cyclist that was struck by a motor vehicle due to a six-foot wall located in a commercial property. Since this is not the typical scenario where a cyclist gets injured, she had to find the laws regarding all possible causes of action to avoid dismissal of the case. She found information that made her case stronger and Pineiro was able to keep the case going in court.

“You can represent your clients with arguments that are stronger, more accurate, efficient, and your case will not be dismissed. It has changed my expertise,” she acknowledges.

Amy Backes

Amy Backes, a law research librarian in Missouri for Littler, one of the largest global employment and labor law practices, credits the course for her recent promotion.

“I received my promotion because of my newly acquired skills in research. This is something I was working on to progress,” she states and recounts how during quarantine, she buckled down to complete the program.

“It was very interesting to see other people’s solutions and interact with classmates on how they came up with their data,” she recalls. “It was a great introduction on how to approach legal research and has given me great confidence.”

Legal Certificates Guide and List in 2022

October 1, 2021

Are you interested in broadening your legal knowledge or deepening your expertise in a particular legal niche? Would you like to do that without necessarily enrolling in law school? Or are you a  Master of Legal Studies  (MLS) student looking to enhance the value of your degree? A legal certificate may be an answer.

In as little as one semester and for much less tuition than for a law or master’s degree, a legal certificate may offer you formal recognition for your specialized legal knowledge.

What is a Legal Certificate Program?

A certificate is not the same as certification, which is a professional badge or license for specific occupations.  A legal certificate is a broad term that signals advanced legal learning and skills. Schools offer legal certificate programs that can differ greatly.  They range from one-week online seminars that accrue continuing legal education credits to certificates that students can earn concurrently with their graduate degrees.

Generally, legal certificates are offered by law schools and require an undergraduate degree. Some programs are designed specifically for students who don’t plan to practice law. Others are aimed at professionals in fields such as engineering or science, where knowledge of intellectual property law and other legal issues may be valuable. Depending on which program a student selects, an externship may be required. Often, a certificate of completion is awarded to candidates when they complete a certificate program.

Types of Legal Certificate Programs

You have a broad range of legal certificate programs to choose from. Some concentrate on a narrow legal niche, such as law and technology or clean energy. Others focus on more general legal fields like corporate law.

Paralegal Certificates and Outcomes

A paralegal certificate is designed specifically for people who work as paralegals or want to  become a paralegal —in other words, non-attorneys who handle legal tasks. Take care not to confuse it with a  paralegal certification , which signifies that you’ve passed a paralegal exam or met other requirements set by the certifying organization.

There are a number of  paralegal education programs that are approved by the American Bar Association  (ABA). Most require a bachelor’s degree to apply, but some are open to students who hold a two-year associate degree or have significant legal work experience.

You can expect to learn about court systems, court procedures, legal ethics, conducting legal research online and more. Some certificate programs incorporate internships for hands-on learning.

Legal Studies Certificates and Outcomes

Designed for people who don’t plan to become licensed attorneys, a legal studies certificate often concentrates on a specific area or industry, such as cybersecurity or bank regulations, offering a thorough understanding of relevant laws and regulations.

Certain universities allow their undergraduates to take extra courses that count toward a legal studies certificate. Other schools allow applications from professionals who intend to pursue careers as paralegals or legal-related occupations.

Certificates in Specific Areas of Law and Outcomes

While there are legal certificates for Master of Legal Studies candidates and non-attorneys, there are also certificate programs for practicing attorneys, as well as Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) students.

Some schools will let you earn multiple legal certificates at the same time. Similarly, some courses may count toward more than one certificate. You can earn certificates in various  specialty areas of the law . They include:

  • Law and technology
  • Environment, energy and natural resources
  • International trade
  • Human resources
  • Intellectual property
  • Constitutional law
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Estate planning
  • State and local taxation

Pros and Cons of Legal Certificates

Depending on your professional goals, earning a legal certificate can be an investment in your career. Possible advantages of a legal certificate program may include:

  • Concentrating your learning in legal topics that matter most to you
  • Qualifying to apply whether you’re an undergraduate, enrolled in law school, a practicing attorney or a professional outside the legal field
  • Less costly than earning a law degree
  • Does not require years of schooling as full degree programs do

But you may find that there are also some drawbacks. One could argue that certificate programs are limited and don’t cover the breadth of knowledge that advanced degree programs are known to. Below, we compare certificate programs with some common legal degree programs to help you weigh the pros and cons of each.

Legal Studies Certificates vs. Master’s Degrees in Legal Studies

A legal certificate can usually be completed in one to three semesters. It often costs less money than a full degree program. You might choose to earn one or more legal certificates by adding extra classes as part of your master’s program.

A master’s degree in legal studies, such as a  Master of Legal Studies (MLS)  or Master of Science in Legal Studies, is a graduate degree for people who don’t plan to take the bar exam to practice law. You need a bachelor’s degree to earn an MLS, which usually takes one to two years.

Law Certificates vs. Master of Laws (LL.M.)

Lawyers who choose to earn a law certificate may gain a competitive edge. You may be able to earn a law certificate as part of your LL.M. degree, depending on the school.

A Master of Laws (LL.M.) is a one-year, in-depth graduate degree for those who already have a J.D. A Master of Laws is a way for lawyers to hone their expertise in a particular field. Some universities gear their LL.M. programs toward professionals who plan to teach law.

Certificates vs. Short Courses

Generally, certificate programs take longer to complete than short courses. While short courses are a way to enhance existing skills and broaden your knowledge, certificates often signify a deeper understanding of a topic area. You’ll usually receive a certificate of completion once you’ve finished a certificate program or short course.

Many universities and professional organizations offer short courses and seminars in a multitude of academic disciplines. Short courses tend to have a less strict application process than certificate programs. Courses usually run for a few days to weeks, instead of the months and semesters that certificate programs tend to require.

Short courses can be in the form of in-person workshops and lectures, covering a wide range of legal topics including business law, data law and beyond. Some even target professionals in leadership positions. Many short courses have a hands-on practical approach, teaching students advocacy skills and more. Short courses can be completed online too, allowing you to interact with classmates and professors in a virtual classroom. If you choose this option, you’ll likely be exposed to interactive course content, such as videos, quizzes and discussion forums, among other materials.

Certificate Programs Offered by ABA-Approved Law Schools

There are legal certificate programs run by law schools that are approved by the American Bar Association. They may carry more prestige than a certificate from a non-ABA approved program. But that may not always be true—or always matter.

Here is a comprehensive list of ABA-approved law schools offering legal certificate programs:

What Can You Do With a Legal Certificate?

Legal certificates aren’t the same as law degrees—and they don’t allow you to sit for the bar to become a licensed attorney.  But selecting the right certificate may boost your legal knowledge within your chosen specialty and give you an edge in your job hunting.

Even less-intensive certificate programs can be valuable. They may offer a way for you to explore new legal niches and ultimately allow you to redirect your career. You might, for instance, switch from financial advice to focus more directly on estate planning. You also could pursue certificates for specific occupations such as a paralegal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Legal Certificate Programs

Undecided or unclear about whether a legal certificate is right for you? Here are the answers to some common questions about pursuing legal certificates.

The length of time varies widely by programs, but most take a couple of semesters. Some students who want to earn a certificate while pursuing their undergraduate or graduate degree may be allowed to spread out the required certificate courses over several semesters. A few certificate programs that accrue  continuing legal education  credits can be finished in days or weeks.

This is a question you can answer best after careful consideration. Costs for legal certificate programs vary. Some law schools charge per single course credit, and some legal certificates require a dozen or more credits for completion. It’s up to you to weigh if the financial investment and effort will be worth it in the long run.

Most legal certificate programs are offered by law schools and require applicants to have a bachelor’s degree at minimum. The exceptions are programs that allow undergraduates to work toward a legal certificate concurrently with their degree.

Some legal certificate programs are aimed at lawyers who hold a J.D. degree or at those who are enrolled in graduate school for their LL.M. or MLS. Still, other programs are open to students and working professionals who want to acquire legal knowledge without necessarily pursuing a law-related degree.

Northeastern University School of Law offers four online graduate law certificate programs designed for non-lawyer professionals who work regularly on legal-related issues. Through a hands-on curriculum, students can earn an advanced, specialized credential with fewer credits than a full master’s program. Our certificates include:

Business Law

The business law certificate gives students an in-depth understanding of corporate finance, global business regulations, intellectual property law and employee rights. Students can gain insight into the prevalent issues in the world of commerce and delve into topics including trademark and trade secret law, workplace health and safety, and valuation of assets.

The health law certificate equips students with the skills to interpret legal regulations surrounding healthcare services. Students can learn more about the American healthcare system and the ethical and legal issues that healthcare professionals face including patient privacy and HIPPA. Topics include the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, compliance operations and healthcare financing.

Human Resources Law

The human resources law certificate can benefit anyone who works in or closely with HR, as well as business owners who want to understand a major legal aspect of an organization. Students can gain further insight into antidiscrimination laws, the employee-employer relationship and wage and hour laws.

Intellectual Property Law

The IP law certificate focuses on trademark and copyright law. Students will learn how to identify and secure intellectual property rights, understand the relationship between intellectual property and media, and gain an understanding of issues like unfair competition, user-generated content and crowd-sourcing.

Legal Certificates: Gaining an Edge

Earning a legal certificate is an increasingly appealing option for people wishing to either broaden their knowledge of the law or deepen their focus in a particular area. These programs require less of a time commitment compared to other law degree options and are also relatively affordable. People seeking to become paralegals, court reporters, or legal administrative assistants might find value in a certificate program. These programs may also be appealing to those who are already lawyers and who seek direct access to advanced law courses and specialized training on a short-term basis.

What You Should Know

  • Some certificate programs are broad and teach basic legal knowledge and skills. Others are more specific and focus on a single area of interest.
  • Certificate programs hold the greatest value for people who are employed in law-related or highly regulated professions but who do not necessarily wish to practice law.
  • Possible focus areas include cybersecurity and data privacy, health law and compliance, tax and estate planning, and enterprise risk management. You can search for certificate programs by area of interest in your free LSAC account .
  • Some certificate programs can be completed in as little as three months.
  • Requirements vary depending on the program, but generally, a bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Oftentimes, there will be flexibility in how the programs are structured, including both an online course and an in-person option, or the ability to study part-time while working.
  • Earning a legal certificate will not allow you to sit for the bar or become an attorney. If these are your goals, you'll need a JD degree  — or, in some cases, an LLM degree .

Planning Your Next Steps

Since legal certificate programs take a short time to complete and are fairly affordable, they hold value for people whose chosen career involves interacting with lawyers or the law, as well as for those who are interested in the legal profession but do not wish to become lawyers. Certificate programs may also be helpful for lawyers seeking additional exposure to a specific area of law. Consider what aspects of the law interest you.

If you're considering a career in the legal field, you may be wondering how to gain the knowledge and skills you need to succeed. While many people choose to pursue a traditional law degree, others opt for a more focused approach. This is where legal certificate programs come in. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore everything you need to know about legal certificate programs, including what they are, who can benefit from them, and much more.

What Are Legal Certificate Programs and Who Can Benefit From Them?

Put simply, legal certificate programs are specialized courses of study that provide individuals with the opportunity to gain focused, practical knowledge in a particular area of law. These programs are designed for a variety of students, including those who are just starting their legal careers, as well as those who are looking to enhance their existing legal knowledge or develop their skills in a specific niche.

Legal certificate programs can be incredibly helpful for individuals who are interested in a career in law but don't want to commit to the time and cost associated with a full law degree program. They may also be a great option for professionals who are already working in the legal field but are looking to expand their knowledge and stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends and best practices.

Moreover, legal certificate programs can also benefit individuals who are not necessarily interested in pursuing a career in law, but who want to gain a deeper understanding of legal concepts and how they apply to their personal or professional lives. For example, a business owner may take a legal certificate program in contract law to better understand the legal implications of their business agreements, or a journalist may take a program in media law to better understand the legal boundaries of their reporting.

Types of Legal Certificate Programs: Which One Is Right for You?

There are a wide variety of legal certificate programs available, each with its own unique focus. Some popular options include:

  • Paralegal Studies
  • Legal Nurse Consulting
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Intellectual Property Law
  • Environmental Law
  • Technology Law

When choosing a legal certificate program, it's important to consider your career goals and interests, as well as the job outlook for the field you're considering. Research different programs and speak with professionals in the industry to determine which one might be the best fit for you.

Another important factor to consider when choosing a legal certificate program is the level of education required. Some programs may only require a high school diploma or equivalent, while others may require a bachelor's degree or higher. It's important to ensure that you meet the educational requirements for the program you're interested in.

Additionally, it's important to consider the cost of the program and any financial aid options that may be available. Some programs may offer scholarships or grants to help offset the cost of tuition, while others may offer payment plans or student loans. Be sure to research all of your options and choose a program that fits within your budget.

How Long Does It Take to Complete a Legal Certificate Program?

The length of a legal certificate program can vary depending on the program and institution. Some certificate programs can be completed in just a few weeks, while others may take a year or more. Generally, most legal certificate programs take between six months to two years to complete.

It is important to note that the length of a legal certificate program may also depend on the student's schedule and availability. Some programs offer flexible schedules, allowing students to complete the program at their own pace, while others may have strict deadlines and require full-time attendance.

Additionally, the curriculum of a legal certificate program may also affect its duration. Programs that cover a wide range of legal topics may take longer to complete, while those that focus on specific areas of law may be shorter in duration.

What Are the Admission Requirements for Legal Certificate Programs?

Admission requirements for legal certificate programs can also vary depending on the institution. Generally, most programs require a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as a minimum GPA and sometimes standardized test scores. Some programs may also require letters of recommendation, essays, or interviews.

It is important to note that some legal certificate programs may have additional requirements beyond the basic admission criteria. For example, certain programs may require applicants to have prior work experience in a related field or to have completed specific prerequisite courses. It is important to carefully review the admission requirements for each program you are interested in to ensure that you meet all of the necessary qualifications.

In addition, some legal certificate programs may have limited enrollment and may require applicants to submit their materials by a specific deadline. It is important to plan ahead and submit your application materials in a timely manner to increase your chances of being accepted into the program of your choice.

How Much Does a Legal Certificate Program Cost and Are There Any Financial Aid Options Available?

The cost of a legal certificate program can also vary depending on the institution and program. However, in general, legal certificate programs are more affordable than full law degree programs.

There are also financial aid options available for those who qualify. These can include scholarships, grants, and loans. Speak with the financial aid office at your institution to learn more.

It is important to note that the cost of a legal certificate program may not only include tuition fees, but also additional expenses such as textbooks, materials, and other related costs. It is recommended that you research and budget for these additional expenses when considering a legal certificate program.

What Skills Will You Learn in a Legal Certificate Program?

The skills you'll learn in a legal certificate program will depend on the specific program you choose. However, common skills that are often covered in these programs include legal research and writing, case management, litigation support, and more.

In addition, many legal certificate programs provide hands-on experience through internships or other practical learning opportunities. This can be a great way to gain experience and make valuable industry connections.

Job Prospects for Graduates of Legal Certificate Programs

Graduates of legal certificate programs may have a variety of career opportunities available to them. Depending on the program, some common job titles include paralegal, legal assistant, court reporter, and legal secretary.

The job outlook for these roles can vary depending on the specific field and location. However, in general, job growth in the legal field is expected to be average or higher, providing ample opportunities for those with legal certificate programs.

Tips for Choosing the Best Legal Certificate Program for Your Career Goals

Choosing the right legal certificate program can be a daunting task. To help with the process, consider the following tips:

  • Research different programs extensively to find one that meets your needs
  • Speak with professionals in the industry for guidance and advice
  • Consider the reputation and accreditation of the institution offering the program
  • Be sure to ask about hands-on learning opportunities and internships
  • Think about your career goals and choose a program that will help you achieve them

Online vs. On-Campus Legal Certificate Programs: Which One Is Better?

Both online and on-campus legal certificate programs have their advantages and disadvantages. Some people prefer the flexibility and convenience of online programs, while others value the opportunity to network and learn in-person.

When choosing between online and on-campus programs, consider your learning style, schedule, and location. Choose the option that will work best for you and help you achieve your goals.

Certification in LexisNexis Legal Research

The process of searching and locating relevant legal information is a challenging endeavor for any researcher. Lawyers, legal secretaries, law librarians, paralegals, law students, and journalists alike must be able to comb through the near-endless supply of legal research and find the information they need in a timely fashion, which is why searchable databases like LexisNexis® have become essential in law firms across the U.S.

What is LexisNexis®?

LexisNexis® is one of the most widely utilized providers of legal-related content, affording customers in more than 175 countries access to billions of documents and records from more than 45,000 news, business, and legal sources. LexisNexis® remains the world’s largest source of public records, forms, unpublished opinions, legal news, and business information.

  • Litigation Solutions: Litigation Solutions provides e-discovery and litigation management solutions.

The Advantages of Becoming an Authority in LexisNexis®

Through the use of LexisNexis® tools and resources, law students, paralegals, lawyers, and legal secretaries are able to:

  • Develop timely insights
