Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the University's highest qualification. The degree is undertaken by research only and leads to advanced academic and theoretical knowledge in a specialist area.

The PhD is suitable for students who want to pursue an academic or research career, or a senior position in the public or private sector. Doctoral studies present you with the opportunity to generate new ideas that can benefit business and society. You will make a significant original contribution to knowledge and understanding in your field of study and meet recognised international standards for your work.

Minimum entry requirements

Must normally have completed the following in a discipline appropriate to the proposed research:

• Master’s degree with honours OR
• Bachelor’s degree with honours (equivalent to 4 years of study)

The degree must normally have been gained at the standard of first class or second class (first division) honours from this University or a recognised equivalent. The degree should include advanced learning in research, execution of a research project and a written report on the research.

International student entry requirements

Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences

• IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with 6.5 in Writing and no band less than 6.0

All other study areas

• IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with 7.0 in Writing and no band less than 6.0

Other requirements

Acceptance is subject to the availability of staff for supervision, prior research preparation and appropriate facilities.

How to apply for the Doctor of Philosophy

• Apply online and submit all required documents at least three months prior to the intended start date
• The Graduate Research School will assess your eligibility and forward to the relevant faculty to confirm possible research areas and supervisors
• Where the faculty confirms the availability of resources, including supervision, they will request for you to complete the formal research proposal (PGR2). Your PGR2 Research Proposal, including supervisory signatures, must be submitted to your Faculty Postgraduate Office a minimum of four weeks prior to your intended start date. If you are planning to start on 1 February, submit your signed PGR2 by 15 December.
• Once the research proposal is confirmed by the faculty, it will be sent to the Graduate Research School for approval and to issue an Offer of Place

Information we need to assess your application

We require the following information:

• Faculty and/or field you wish to conduct your study in
• Academic transcripts
• Grading scale for postgraduate qualification
• Degree certificates (undergraduate and postgraduate)
• Title of the thesis/dissertation/research project
• 1-2 page document (maximum) outlining your proposed research project
• Curriculum vitae (CV)
• If English is not your first language you need to provide evidence of English language proficiency – IELTS (Academic) test results or recognised equivalent. If your postgraduate study was completed in English within three years, this may be waived

Once the required information is received, we will forward your enquiry to the relevant faculty who will communicate to you about the outcome of your application, possible research areas and supervisors.

Requirements for specific subjects

Art & design.

We require a portfolio (between 10-15 annotated images as a pdf or PowerPoint file or a URL for a website)

Provide evidence of completing the courses Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics at postgraduate level. Course syllabus or similar is required for assessment of comparability of those courses to those taken in New Zealand

Doctoral students will attain the knowledge, values and attributes to make significant contributions to their professional communities and societies through further high-quality research, and developments.

You put together a proposal that critically reviews work done in your area of research. This requires a suitable research methodology and a timeframe for completion of the degree. You are expected to publish one or more papers for a reputed international conference in your chosen area of research.

Once you have completed your research proposal, you refine your design, collect data and conduct your research as appropriate. Data is collected and analysed and the results are published at international conferences. A journal publication is also encouraged at this point.

The first step in the final stage of the PhD is finalising the data collection and analysis. You then write your PhD thesis and submit it to the supervisor for feedback. It could take two or three drafts before the thesis is ready for submission and examination.

University of Auckland admissions take place in the winter intakes for international students. The admissions process is selective, with an acceptance rate of 45% for all the courses. Students seeking admission to graduate programs at University of Auckland may choose from over 50 degree programs. Graduate applicants must have a GPA score of at least 5.0 or equivalent to be eligible for University of Auckland admissions . International students applying for admission have to submit their proof of English proficiency. The commonly accepted English language proficiency test here is IELTS. The minimum score for IELTS acceptable at University of Auckland is 6.5 , with no band below 6.0 for graduate programs.

University of Auckland admissions for MBA are offered by the business department. Students can opt for a full-time or a part-time MBA program, depending on their requirements. University of Auckland  acceptance rate is around 45% for all the courses. The admission process is very selective and, thus, very competitive for international students. Students applying for graduate programs and MBA are required to have a minimum GPA score of 5.0 or equivalent to be eligible for admission. Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum aggregate score of 75% or above in their high school.

Standardized tests like GMAT and GRE are not required for admission at University of Auckland. However, international students have to submit their IELTS test scores with minimum score of 6.5 for graduate programs, and 6.0 for undergraduate programs. Other documents like letters of recommendation, personal statements, and resume are also considered for admission.

Life at University of Auckland

• Education which was received is very useful in real life and opens up a lot of career paths for you. ,
• The content we had wasn't something you can simply find online. ,
• Most of the courses we got had a lot of interesting content that you would actually enjoy working with rather than considering it as a pressure.
• Some courses' marking schemes and weightage could be better. One course of mine had very unfair grading where the exam was 60% and the coursework was 40%. Typically in all other courses it was the other way around. ,
• Student clubs were rare and irrelevant. It was also quite hard to form groups as the community was not sociable at least in my experience. ,
• Sports opportunities were also quite less than what I desired.

I chose this college as it was the best university among my applications with a high world ranking. It was also the best university in New Zealand. New Zealand also suited my personal and geographical preferences. Education quality and content is top notch. Tutors are approachable and supportive. Infrastructure is good and helpful. Wi-Fi had occasional issues. I strongly recommend having a decent mobile data plan for urgent use cases. Being a masters degree, the content is indeed difficult and hard to score in, but what you learn is equally rewarding. Sports facilities are very limited. The student halls are always overbooked so there is less assistance from the university in finding accommodation. You're quite by yourself in that aspect. Some courses' weighting could be better. The distribution between the coursework and exam was unfair in a few courses.

Life at UoA

• The project aligned with my research interest, and I found my supervisor's work to be of high interest. Also, the university has a proven track record of research excellence, especially in population health. ,
• The high-impact research atmosphere provides an edge for a researcher like me to collaborate with esteemed researchers in my field. The University is equipped with modern infrastructure, facilities, and faculties.
• Nothing for the time being. The University has exceeded my expectations in terms of research opportunities, work-life balance, student-teacher relationship and other facilities.

My experience at the University so far has been excellent. I have been involved in both teaching activities and research, both of which have been a rewarding experience for me.

HRC Research scholarship amounting to 30,000 NZD per year and tuition fees remission. No separate application was required for scholarship.

My university is one of the best university and ranked in top 100 globally. And I wanted to do masters of international business from the very start of my career. When I got the chance i accepted it.

I applied to the University of Auckland since it is the leading University in New Zealand, and being a part of such a massive institution would have been an excellent opportunity for me. The admission process is pretty fast and convenient; considering me being an international student, all my queries regarding admission were cleared through email within 48 hours. The admission process isn't much of a hassle. You fill out the online form from the website, and that's it. A few weeks later, I received an email saying I got the Conditional Offer. After receiving that, you just have to complete the conditions they have put forward, and if you manage to meet those, you will get your part. You just need to make sure that all the conditions that the University has put forward are satisfied. Mine was to get an 85% score or above in Physics, Chemistry, and Maths in the 12th Examination and receive a band of 6 or above in IELTS.

Great exposure to self-learning and many business books

I was fooled by my consultant that it is the best university. I could have prepared for GRE and opted for the USA. Also, my consultant said this is the only country to get 3 years f work visa once I get graduated but getting a job without formal and professional work experience is tough in the country. also, the support for career development is poor.

I did not get a scholarship but to get the scholarship you need to score top grades. Only one or two are awarded. sometimes none.

Deferring your programme

What is a programme deferral.

A Programme Deferral is a request from a newly admitted student to delay their start date to a future semester/year without making a new application for admission. 

Please note:

• There is no guarantee that the same decision (i.e. an offer or conditional offer) will be made to your deferred application. This is because admission requirements and availablity of programmes, as well as core courses, vary between academic years and semesters.
• If you are currently active in a programme, but wish to take a break from your study for a semester, please see Defer enrolment to next semester or quarter . 

Who can request a deferral?

If you have submitted a pending application, or have received an offer for a programme (before the start of the programme), you can request a Programme Deferral.

You can log in to your Application to Study (ATS) and click the 'defer application' option that shows by your current applications. This will allow you to select a future term. A new application will then be added, and the current one will be withdrawn. 

To log in to your Application to Study, visit Continue your application .

What will happen to my course enrolment(s)?

If you are enrolled in any courses, these will need to be deleted along with your programme before the start of the semester. This is not an automated process, so please follow the steps below to action your deferral. 

How to request and action a deferral

If you are a new student with an existing application(s) and are unable to start studying, even when you have not received or accepted an offer:

• Before the start of the semester - You can use the defer option in your Application to Study up until your programme start date. You will then be directed to Student Services Online (SSO) . From there, you can delete your enrolments/withdraw via self-service. You are welcome to submit a new application for a future semester. For further information, please see Request to defer a firm or conditional offer . 
• Drop any current course enrolments - see Drop or swap a course .
• Delete your programme - see Programme deletion .
• Submit a new application for a future intake - see Apply now .                    

Additional requirements for international students

If you are an international student, a Confirmation of Current Enrolment letter is required by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) as part of your visa application.
