For a technical ladder comprising seven rungs, the role characteristics taken from a chemical industry example, are described below. As a person moves up the rungs, the amount of experience typically available increases as does the typical length of the projects or tasks assigned to that individual. Likewise a person’s project skill level increases, from running simple projects to running complex platform programs that are key to the organization’s sustained business success. Also key is the ability to lead others, which increases as one moves-up the ladder. Example Job Titles and Level Descriptions follow:

Level 1 – Chemist, physicist, engineer, etc.

GENERAL: This is an apprenticeship period, with the incumbent progressively developing his or her professional maturity, judgment, and experience. For the person who continues to develop this period would cover the first few years beyond the bachelor’s degree. TECHNICAL DIRECTION RECEIVED: detailed TECHNICAL DIRECTION GIVEN: they give general technical direction to several nonprofessional personnel. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITY: none. SCOPE: seek solutions to technical problems. Work may range from the use of defined methods to exercising some degree of technical judgment.

Level 2 – Research chemist, physicist, etc.

GENERAL: At this stage, the engineer or scientist is working at a professional level and could be termed a journeyman in his or her field. Responsibilities are likely to encompass a project and the person receives general supervision from more senior professionals. May be directing one or more technical personnel who are Level 1 as well as some non-professional assistants. TECHNICAL DIRECTION RECEIVED: works with little or no technical guidance. TECHNICAL DIRECTION GIVEN: may give technical direction to a group of professional or nonprofessional personnel. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: minimal. SCOPE: plans and executes technical programs within his or her area of specialty; expected to initiate new projects within an existing program.

Level 3T – Senior research chemist, physicist, etc.

GENERAL: This level is characterized by concentration in technical or specific specialty leading to recognition within the company, or the profession, on the basis of technical competence. TECHNICAL DIRECTION RECEIVED: works with little or no technical guidance. TECHNICAL DIRECTION GIVEN: may give technical direction to a group of professional or nonprofessional personnel. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: minimal SCOPE: plans and executes technical programs within his or her area of specialty; expected to initiate new projects within an existing program.

Level 3A – Group leader

GENERAL: this level involves technical supervision with responsibility covering several projects and a considerable area of classical supervisory problems. Level 3A is normally considered to be the first line management or supervision. TECHNICAL DIRECTION RECEIVED: receives general technical guidance from Level 4A TECHNICAL DIRECTION GIVEN: gives technical direction to the lowest organizational entity which normally consists of 1 to 30 professional and nonprofessional personnel. Such direction includes planning, scheduling, and assignment of work within a program area. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: normally spends 10 to 50% of his or her time on administrative responsibilities. Implements safety, security, and disciplinary policies. Interviews and makes recommendations to hire, transfer, and/or terminate personnel. Responsible for the orientation and development of personnel. Review’s performance and recommends adjustment in compensation. SCOPE: participates in and pursues patents and other intellectual property. Assists in the preparation, editing, and approval of project reports. Prepares periodic progress reports to higher management. May participate in planning and administrating the budget. Originates, initiates, and tracks new projects within an approved program area.

Level 4T – research associate

GENERAL: the technical specialist exhibits superior scientific proficiency and is a recognized expert in his or her field. He or she would have minimum administrative responsibilities; be expected to perform advanced studies and to give technical guidance to others in the organization. TECHNICAL DIRECTION RECEIVED: capable of independent work including initiation, planning, and execution of abroad program assignments with no professional guidance. TECHNICAL DIRECTION GIVEN: may have technical responsibility for those working with him or her in his or her field or specialization. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: minimal SCOPE: conducts independent research and investigations to define and develop the functional theory about proposed product or process. Conceives and expands theories pertaining to new applications of existing products and/or processes along with the modification of product and/or processes in order to broaden the scope and application. Invents and designs complex products and processes and may assist in engineering these into production. Analyzes and evaluates the scope and objective of inventive ideas.

Level 4A – section manager

GENERAL: this level is normally considered to be the second line management or supervision with responsibility for substantial technical activity. TECHNICAL DIRECTION RECEIVED: minimal TECHNICAL DIRECTION GIVEN: gives technical direction to one or more organizations, entities, or professional and nonprofessional personnel (normally in excess of 25 people). Such activity includes the planning, implementing, coordinating, and interpreting of one or more technical platforms. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: normally spends 20 to 60% of his or her time on administrative duties. Responsible for safety, security, and disciplinary action. Initiates action to hire, compensate, transfer, and terminate personnel. Responsible for appraising, counseling, orienting, and developing lower levels. SCOPE: establishes program objectives in line with company’s interests. Establishes budget for approval by higher management and controls expenditures within the approved budget. Originates and initiates new program areas. Responsible for inter-and intra-company liaison. Participates in the formulation, interpretation, transmission, and administration of research and development policy and actions. Participates in patent decisions. Reviews and communicates technical programs to higher management. Conceives and recommends new programs to broaden the product or process application, modifies the existing product or process, and creates entirely new products or processes.

Level 5T and Level 5A – Senior research associate and department head, lab directors, etc.

GENERAL: in order to emphasize personnel can and do attain growth beyond that of level 4T or 4A, this level would include those personnel who have demonstrated outstanding technical excellence and normally have received national or international recognition for their contributions. The stature of this level is comparable to that of the top research and development management function. He or she covers a wide organizational span for his or her contributions and can affect not only top research and development management, but also corporate management. The duties of this level are primarily that of a consulting an independent research nature coupled with broad latitude for the selection of programs.

With that in mind, many people are understandably researching how to work in research and development and aligning their career paths for a career in R&D experiments or R&D engineering.

Senior Principal Scientist/Associate Director, Radioligand Modeling & Simulation

About the role.

Key responsibilities:

Act as the Translational M&S representative on radioligand therapy programs, developing and executing modeling strategies, contributing to project team discussions, and guiding therapeutic design and dose selection decisions.   

Build and apply innovative QSP and physiologically based PK (PBPK) models along with dosimetry estimations to link RLT pharmacology, tissue biodistribution, mechanism(s) of action, and biological and clinical outcomes .   

Advance the develop ment of an integrated RLT modeling platform that bridge s data and knowledge across preclinical species and patients, partnering with discovery project teams as well as the preclinical safety and pharmacometrics groups.    

Advance the translational science for radiopharmaceuticals , setting new standards in how to guide RLT discovery and clinical development .      

Proactively seek opportunities to increase the impact and awareness of translational and clinical modeling through communications with internal and external audiences.  

Contribute to group strategy and serve as an M&S subject area expert across PK Sciences and Biomedical Research initiatives.  

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in biology, pharmaceutical sciences, bioengineering, biophysics, or a related field with 6+ years of experience (experience in industry preferred) as well as demonstrated mastery of radiobiology / nuclear medicine.

Extensive experience , preferably in industry, in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP), and/or physiologically based PK (PBPK) modeling is required .  

Expert level proficiency in core modeling fundamentals is required , including scripting languages (e.g., MATLAB, R), construction of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models, parameter estimation, and data visualization. Proficiency in dosimetry is a plus .  

Demonstrated ability to communicate modeling results to a multidisciplinary audience to facilitate decision-making.   

Demonstrated ability to independently develop and implement modeling strategy across a disease area and/or modality platform.  

Demonstrated scientific leadership in Modeling & Simulation and ability to effectively partner with and influence the broader drug discovery and development organization to be considered at the Associate Director level.

Fluent in English (oral and written) .

Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Director of Player Development will assist the softball coaching staff in all areas of player development and will assist in the coordination and execution of recruiting activities. This position will assist with student-athlete development, as well as working with multiple athletic department units including academics, compliance, marketing/communications, and the ticket office. The Head Softball Coach will assign other duties and special projects, as necessary. Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model that includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 4 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

As a Senior Administrative Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the Vice President’s preparedness and readiness for meetings, events, and discussions. You will be responsible for proactively managing the Vice President’s calendar, and facilitating communications. Your role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

The Senior Administrative Coordinator will provide high-level administrative support assigned by the Vice President or her Executive Specialist. This support includes proactively managing a conflict-free calendar, making travel arrangements, creating itineraries, and reconciling expenses, paying invoices, and handling donor/prospect data entry. The successful candidate will be skilled in managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously and effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Most duties involve sensitive and/or confidential information.

Key responsibilities:

  • Proactively manage the Vice President’s calendar by scheduling complex meetings and events. Meetings may include the President, Provost, Sr. Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, Deans, and/or University Trustees. Identify conflicts and work with the VP or her Executive Specialist to reschedule appointments when needed. Escalate urgent meeting requests, and follow up with timely responses.
  • Work closely with the Executive Specialist to prepare materials for meetings to ensure the VP is properly prepared.
  • Make travel arrangements for the Vice President. Reconcile travel expenses in a timely and thorough manner. Organize and maintain electronic and hard filing system of financial documentation. Process invoices and ensure adherence to the Vice President’s budget.
  • Create itineraries for each trip along with a travel folder with particulars needed for the trip. I.e., agendas and briefings etc.
  • Obtain a thorough understanding of DAR’s CRM (JHAS) to enter proposals, actions, visit notes, and stewardship reports, and provide information as requested by the Vice President.
  • Acquire a detailed working knowledge of the university’s financial (currently SAP) and travel systems (Concur).
  • Process receipts, coordinate payment of SAVP’s executive credit and administrative purchasing cards. Coordinate payment process to external vendors. Properly document all charges and account for all receipts.
  • Order supplies for the Vice President of Development and secure any other purchasing needs.
  • Serve as the lead in setting up and breaking down meeting rooms/spaces inclusive of ordering food where Vice President is the host.
  • Able to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Five years progressively responsible administrative experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • High-level proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to quickly learn new software.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Alumni Relations and Development for the Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS), the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and Development plays an integral role on a dynamic Alumni Relations and Development team. This new and unique role is key to increasing engagement with alumni and creating relationships with students to contribute to the creation of a culture of philanthropy within GSAS. Focusing largely on students and recent graduates, the Assistant Director will enhance and manage existing student and recent graduate events, initiatives, and programs as they relate to GSAS Alumni Relations and Development efforts. The Assistant Director will also serve as a key member of the Alumni Relations and Development team coordinating activities across work streams and providing both administrative support for GSAS Development and Alumni Relations and event-related support for GSAS strategic events, including administrative and logistical assistance in the planning of special events and programs for alumni, students, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Alumni Relations and Development staff liaison to and administer all aspects of a robust and active Recent Alumni and Students Committee.
  • Assist the Director of Alumni Relations and Development in the planning of Board and committee meetings, calls, and events; keep minutes of all Board meetings; and produce minutes of all committee calls and meetings.
  • Serve as the principal liaison for the Director of Alumni Relations and Development in all aspects of her interactions with alumni volunteers.
  • Increase student involvement in and awareness of the philanthropic and engagement priorities of the Board and identify and cultivate student leaders via the RAS Fund and the SSL.
  • Establish RAS Fund and SSL goals and outcomes in partnership with the Director of Alumni Relations and Development and key GSAS partners.
  • Serve as an advisor to and administer all aspects of the RAS Fund and the SSL, including executive board and general body recruitment, member training and supervision, and event execution.
  • Manage the involvement of RAS Fund and SSL student representatives on the Board and Board committees.
  • Work with GSAS and alumni relations and development staff across campus to help manage the involvement of RAS Fund and SSL student representatives in alumni dinners, events, and galas.
  • Act as the Alumni Relations and Development staff liaison to the Arts and Sciences Graduate Council, as needed, and work with the GSAS Student Affairs Officer to connect alumni with the ASGC and ASCG-recognized student groups.
  • Assist the Director of Alumni Relations and Development and GSAS Compass staff in driving student and alumni engagement through career panels and information sessions and the GSAS Career Contacts program, including via communications, digital resources, and events. Identify, recruit, and manage alumni participation in student-alumni programs, and develop connections between recent graduates and current students.
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships with GSAS Master’s program staff by conducting outreach, establishing two way communication channels, and facilitating engagement
  • Collaborate with GSAS Communications staff on the production of quarterly alumni newsletters and annual departmental mailings and the execution of the GSAS social media strategy. Identify students for student spotlights. Ensure alumni communications are recorded on the OAD Lionmail "Email Outreach Calendar".
  • Manage database entry and maintain volunteer lists and event data entry to ensure database accuracy.
  • Pull data for all Alumni Relations and Development programs, as needed.
  • Requires cross-training to support development goals, as needed, to include Athena database.
  • Partnering with GSAS Communications staff on all communications and marketing needs for relevant programs and projects, to include event-related biographies, award citations, programs, invitations, nametags, emails, and registration websites;
  • Collaborating with the Director of Alumni Relations and Development on all event set-ups and breakdowns, the coordination of the delivery of all event supplies and materials in advance of events to ensure they are in place prior to event beginning and their return to storage upon event completion, and management of storage and organization during non-peak event times;
  • Stay up-to-date on related policies and procedures (team-, GSAS-, and University-related), and assist with ensuring that guidelines are followed.
  • As requested, research vendors (caterers, florists, printers, promotional items, etc.) and appropriate venues and space.
  • Assist with vendor and site inquiry for special events.
  • Requires training on the Columbia University Event Management System.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2 years of related experience are required.
  • Must demonstrate an excellent customer service orientation and a strong understanding of event coordination, logistics, and operational support.
  • Must demonstrate excellent use of personal judgment and expertise to enhance the customer experience and solve problems.
  • Must effectively communicate with vendors and event professionals.
  • Strong proficiency in software (Windows, Google Suite, PowerPoint, Word) literacy and facility with social media platforms, and Advanced Excel work (organizing, manipulating, and verifying data and VLOOKUP) required.
  • Hands-on event management experience that includes supporting the full cycle of events from pre-event planning to post-event follow-up.
  • Position requires the ability to lift and carry items in excess of 20 lbs., in addition to walking and standing for long periods.
  • Attention to detail; outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills; and a customer service attitude are essential.
  • The position requires the ability to manage multiple diverse tasks simultaneously and accurately in a highly detail-oriented environment; to use good judgment in prioritizing work; to work proactively, both independently and as a team; to work independently with minimal supervision; and to exercise extreme attention to detail and excellent judgment, tact, and diplomacy in all interactions.
  • The incumbent must maintain a very high level of confidentiality and handle information with integrity and discretion.
  • Frequent evening and occasional weekend hours are required, with possible travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Mandarin is a plus.
  • Proficiency with WeChat and Salesforce Marketing Cloud are a plus.
