This is why  World Environment Day  2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”  We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land.

United Nations aware and promote people about environment through this campaign celebration. It is an effective annual campaign to get public action and political attention positively.

Varieties of activities are organized during its celebration to make it more effective and fulfill the objectives of particular theme of the year. Activities are like essay writing, paragraph writing, speech, drama play, street rallies, quiz competition, art and paintings, parades, debates, and many more activities. Other kinds of exhibitions are organized to promote environmental awareness among people. It attracts a huge gathering of academics, environmentalists, professors, scientists, politicians, etc including common public where new ideas are created concerning the environment.

Other than the celebration of world environment day by the host city, it is individually celebrated by the countries in their states, cities, hometowns, schools, colleges, public places, etc with parades, cleanup activities, concerts, recycling initiatives, tree plantation, including all kinds of green actions to motivate and inspire people towards the bad condition of this beautiful planet. It is not a public holiday thus all the schools and offices remain open and no one gets off. It is an initiative to work together for taking some positive actions to maintain the beauty of the planet. We should keep in mind all the objectives of this campaign all around the year and convert them into actions accordingly in the form of beautifying the surrounding areas through plantation and cleanliness, saving water, less of use of electricity, using organic and local foods, save wildlife, and so many. We have only one planet to live on, it is our home and only we are responsible to maintain its natural beauty forever.

World Environment Day is a campaign celebrated every year on 5 th of June to solve environmental issues by implementing new and effective plans in order to make environment safe, secure and healthy for better future. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 during the opening of a special conference for environment named as “Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment”. It is a most important day commemorated annually to spread awareness about environment among people all over the world as well as encourage and motivate them to take positive actions regarding clean and beautiful environment on the earth. It is celebrated with lots of preparations as a big event of the year during which political attention and public actions are enhanced.

WED was established with various plans, agenda and objectives to remove all the environmental issues from this planet and make it really a beautiful planet. It was necessary to establish this particular event to focus on environmental problems and give people a face to environmental issues. Its celebration helps us to understand the importance of healthy environment for our healthy life as well as to empower public to be the active agents of sustainable and environment-friendly development worldwide. It spreads the common understanding among people that it is must to change their attitudes towards environmental issues to ensure the availability of a safer and more prosperous future to all the nations and peoples.

World environment day campaign is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Its headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya however celebrated in over 100 countries all across the world. It was established in 1972 however celebrated first time in 1973. The celebration event of it is hosted every year by the different city (known as host city) with different theme (declared by the UNGA). It is celebrated through the international collaboration of people. The theme of world environment day celebration 2016 was “fight against the illegal trade in wildlife for life” and host country was Angola.

It focuses to bring people from all countries at one track to deal and combat with the climate changes and improve the management of forests. It is celebrated with many creative activities such as tree plantation, cultural activities by students, drawing, painting, quiz competitions, debate, lectures, essay writing, banner display, speech recitation, etc on topics related to the environment protection. Workshops (regarding sustainable project management) are also organized to encourage youths about the environment and climate change issues for safe future on the earth.

In 2009, an environment fair was held in Chennai and Bangalore with the activities like on the spot painting competition, training programmes for students over e-waste management, renewable energy devices, wildlife conservation, rain water harvesting systems, waste recycle and reuse processes, debates on rising global warming, biodegradable wastes, awareness drives about “go green” revolution, etc for eco-friendly infrastructure and energy efficiency to curb global warming and save natural resources.

It is the time for nature: World Environment Day 2020

World Environment Day is a day of celebration. It is a day upon which, for over forty years, people the world over have advocated and acted for a healthy environment. From beach clean-ups to mass tree-planting to marches, individuals, communities and governments have come out to stand shoulder-to-shoulder for our planet.

This year, we cannot take to the beaches, forests and streets. We must stay at home, keep our distance and mark World Environment Day virtually. This is because we all stand in solidarity with those suffering from the global pandemic. We need to protect the sick, the poor and the vulnerable from the worst ravages of this disease. In particular, our thoughts are with the Americas, where the pandemic is now hitting hard.

I pay tribute to Colombia, this year’s World Environment Day host nation, for making this event happen, and to the many thousands of advocates honouring this day with their own virtual events during these difficult times.

While these online celebrations are a tribute to human commitment and ingenuity, the fact that we have to do it this way means something is terribly wrong with human stewardship of the Earth. This virus is not bad luck, or a one-off event that nobody could see coming. It is an entirely predictable result of humanity’s destruction of nature – which will cause far greater suffering if left unchecked.

Humanity’s unhealthy relationship with nature

The science does not lie. We can tell much of the story of the damage our species has wrought with a few facts.

• Humanity has altered 75 per cent of the Earth’s ice-free surface.  
• Since 1990, 420 million hectares of forest, equal to three times the size of South Africa, have been lost.
• Nearly one million species face extinction, while the illegal wildlife trade is the fourth largest illegal trade crime in the world.

COVID-19, which was transmitted from animals to humans, is a direct warning that nature can take no more. COVID-19 is zoonotic, a type of disease that transmits between animals and humans. We are facing it in large part because humanity’s expansion into wild spaces and exploitation of species brings people into closer contact with wildlife. COVID-19 may be one of the worst, but it is not the first. 75 per cent of all emerging infectious diseases are of zoonotic. origins. Ebola, SARS, the Zika virus and bird flu all spread from animals to people, often due to human encroachment on nature.

But zoonotic illnesses are not the only warning sign that the degradation of nature is threatening health, peace and prosperity.

As ecosystems and biodiversity fall to cities, agriculture, infrastructure, climate change and pollution, nature’s ability to provide food, oxygen, clean water and climate regulation plummets. This directly impacts human health and wealth.

Meanwhile, the climate emergency has not gone away. CO 2 levels in the atmosphere hit an all-time high in early May. In April, the World Meteorological Organization said temperatures have increased 1.1 degrees centigrade above pre-industrial levels. We are seeing the consequences in bushfires, acidifying oceans and locust invasions – which could push millions of people in East Africa into hunger.

And while greenhouse gas emissions may dip this year because of lockdowns, we should not celebrate. Think of the atmosphere as a bathtub, and emissions as the water that flows from the tap. We have only turned down the tap slightly. The tub is still filling. This means, as Joseph Stiglitz and other luminaries recently said, we face going out of the COVID frying pan into the climate fire.

COVID-19 recovery packages can spark change

So, lockdowns are not a silver lining for the environment. They have, however, shown that nature can still flourish, if we give it the chance. During the lockdowns, we saw air pollution clear and nature coming out of hiding – from penguins wandering the streets of Cape Town to kangaroos bouncing through Adelaide. This gives us a glimpse into how much better our lives could be if we lived in harmony with nature. But we need to make this happen in a way that lasts.

Now is not the time to set aside environmental laws and norms in the name of recovery, as we have seen done in some places. We need to strengthen environmental protection to build back better. We have the opportunity to do just that.

Governments have already invested trillions of dollars to stabilize our economies and protect the most vulnerable. They will invest trillions more to restart our economies. These funds should be aligned with pro-nature growth in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and the upcoming global framework on biodiversity. These agreements form the only viable global roadmap to protecting the natural world that sustains us and lifting billions of people out of poverty.

But what does this actually mean?

• It means investments and policies that focus on investments in “nature’s infrastructure” for climate regulation: our wetlands, forests, mangroves and more besides.
• Keeping wild spaces wild, stopping deforestation and restoring degraded land to protect biodiversity, boost food production and store carbon.
• Making agriculture biodiversity positive.
• Integrating natural infrastructure with built infrastructure to reduce climate impacts and bring biodiversity back.
• Backing sustainable production and consumption to conserve the planet’s resources.
• Ending fossil fuel subsidies and making renewable energy the future.
• Retrofitting our built infrastructure to be more energy efficient.
• Investing in public transport expansion and bicycle paths.

These are all smart investments. COVID-19 has killed hundreds of thousands of people and shrunk the global economy by trillions of dollars. Climate change, pollution and biodiversity carry price tags that are heftier and longer lasting. But if we make the right investments, we don’t just avoid future damage. We make everyone’s lives better.

COVID-19 has hammered home that addressing inequality is one of humanity’s biggest pieces of unfinished business. The World Bank estimates that COVID-19 is likely to cause the first increase in global poverty since 1998. We cannot afford to delay environmental action, as it is the poorest and most vulnerable that will suffer the most.  

Time for nature

This is why we say it’s time for nature. If anyone needs further convincing, perhaps it is useful to highlight some numbers that show what nature already gives us, and how much more it could give if we treat it with the respect it deserves.

• Around half of global GDP depends on nature.
• Our oceans and forests sustain billions of people and provide green jobs – 86 million green jobs from forests alone.
• Four billion people rely primarily on natural medicines.
• Natural climate solutions – such as afforestation and using greenery to cool our cities and buildings – can provide around one-third of the emissions reductions needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Nature is of even greater significance in Colombia and the wider Latin American region, home to the Amazon and so much more.

• 6 countries in the region are considered megadiverse: Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
• The economic value of terrestrial nature’s contributions to people in the Americas is estimated at USD 24.3 trillion per year.
• The world’s top biodiversity body, IPBES, estimates that restoring degraded lands in Latin American and the Caribbean could bring USD 23 billion in economic benefits in the next 50 years.

These benefits are in clear and present danger. But Colombia and other nations are aware of this. They are acting.

• Colombia adopted national strategies on the circular economy, electric mobility and low-carbon development.
• The National Council to Combat Deforestation and other Environmental Crimes, established in 2019, reported a reduction of about 50 per cent in some of the deforestation hotspots during the last quarter of 2019.
• At the World Economic Forum in January, President Duque announced Colombia’s target to plant 180 million trees by August 2022.
• In Latin America and the Caribbean, 24 per cent of land is designated as protected, as opposed to the global average of 15.2 per cent.

But we all have to do a lot more, including my organization.

Working in partnership: the role of UNEP

Everything UNEP does is geared towards creating a healthy natural world that will support human health, peace and prosperity for generations to come.

• When UNEP publishes science to help governments design and implement the right policies, it is for nature.
• When UNEP provides technical advice on issues as diverse as ecosystem fragmentation, circularity, and food waste, it is for nature.
• When UNEP works through its network of global multilateral agreements – the glue that binds the international community together on environmental action – it is for nature.
• When UNEP collaborates with the private sector to encourage banks, businesses and investors to shift their investments towards sustainability, it is for nature.
• When UNEP creates partnerships and coalitions across the UN system, governments, the private sector and civil society to accelerate action on climate change, sustainable consumption and production, biodiversity loss and pollution, it is for nature.

Everything UNEP does is in partnership. This is because the world is too big and interconnected for anybody to go it alone in the face of the environmental problems challenging our species. Isolationism and short-termism will help no one in the long run. Countries cannot close their borders to climate change or biodiversity loss.

Today, on World Environment Day, I call on all everyone to work together to protect the nature that supports us all. The stronger our planet’s life support systems are, the better human health and wealth will be.

It is, without a doubt, time for nature.

2024, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia | Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration

World Environment Day 2024 put a spotlight on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience . On 5 June, the host country, Saudi Arabia, celebrated its land restoration efforts and announced greater support and funding for private and philanthropic organisations working on environmental issues.

2023, Côte d’Ivoire | Solutions to Plastic Pollution #BeatPlasticPollution 

In 2023 , World Environment Day focused on showcasing solutions to plastic pollution, underscoring the need for a comprehensive “whole-of-society approach” to combatting the plastic pollution crisis. Following the unanimous passing of the  historic resolution  to establish an  Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC)  to develop a legally binding global instrument to end plastic pollution, this World Environment Day served as a reminder that  solutions are available , but we need stronger and more concerted action to rethink how humanity designs, produces, consumes, and disposes of plastics, products, and packaging to  #BeatPlasticPollution . 

2022, Sweden | Only One Earth #OnlyOneEarth

World Environment Day paid homage to the 50th anniversary of what is considered the world’s first environmental summit, the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment . Like that gathering, it adopted the slogan “Only One Earth”, casting a spotlight on the pressing need to protect and restore humanity’s lone home. 

At the 2022 official event, host country Sweden pledged to stop issuing licenses for new coal, oil and natural gas extraction. More than 65 million people celebrated World Environment Day online.

2021, Pakistan | Ecosystem Restoration #GenerationRestoration

The focus was Ecosystem Restoration celebrated under the theme “ Reimagine. Recreate. Restore ”. Hosted by Pakistan, it cast a spotlight on how humanity has been exploiting the planet's ecosystems and called for a concerted global effort to repair the damage that has been done. Every three seconds, the world loses enough forest to cover a football pitch and, over the last century, half of all wetlands have been destroyed. 

2020, Colombia | Time for Nature #TimeForNature

In 2020 , the World Environment Day theme focused on biodiversity – a concern both urgent and existential. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 crisis – caused by the rapid destruction of habitats – President of Colombia, Iván Duque Márquez, said “the time to act is now if we want to assure our present and our future.” Fourteen world leaders – including those from Colombia, Costa Rica, Finland, France and Seychelles – released a statement calling on governments worldwide to support a new global goal to protect at least 30 per cent of the planet’s land and ocean by 2030.

2019, People's Republic of China | Beat Air Pollution #BeatAirPollution

The theme was air pollution, a global emergency that causes around 7 million premature deaths every year. Hosted by China, President Xi Jinping stressed his country’s willingness to share its experience combating air pollution with other nations. China also launched its Air Quality Improvement Report (2013-2018) to showcase successful policies and reflect on lessons learned.

2018, India | Beat Plastic Pollution #BeatPlasticPollution

The 45th celebration of World Environment Day was under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Over 6,000 people gathered at Versova Beach in Mumbai to join UN Environment Champion of the Earth Afroz Shah in a beach clean-up, where they collected over 90,000 kg of plastic. The Indian government made a bold commitment to ban all single-use plastics—which makes up 70 per cent of marine litter—by 2022 and European Union lawmakers agreed on a ban by 2025.

2017, Canada | Connecting People to Nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator #ImWithNature

“I’m with nature” was the theme of World Environment Day 2017, which inspired more than 1,800 events, from tree-planting in Mumbai to ivory burning in Angola to a running race through Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park. In host country Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined UNEP’s Erik Solheim to connect with nature by paddling kayaks along the Niagara River.

2016, Angola | Zero Tolerance for the Illegal Wildlife Trade #WildForLife

The day was a springboard for #WildforLife, at the time UNEP’s biggest-ever digital campaign and a major push to counter international wildlife crime. Host country Angola promised to curb the trading of elephant ivory. China, a key destination for illegal wildlife products, subsequently pledged to close down its domestic ivory market.

2015, Italy | Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care. #ConsumeWithCare

World Environment Day went viral. Celebrated under the theme “Seven Billion People. One Planet. Consume with Care,” it was the most popular subject on Twitter in more than 20 countries. 

2014, Barbados | Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level #ClimateChange

The theme “Raise Your Voice Not the Sea Level!” built awareness of the dangers facing island nations from climate change. The next year, small island states secured an agreement at the Paris climate talks to pursue the ambitious goal of limiting the increase in average global temperature to 1.5°C.

2013, Mongolia | Think.Eat.Save. Reduce Your Foodprint  #ThinkEatSave

The year’s theme was “Think.Eat.Save.” The campaign highlighted the environmental toll of food waste, empowering people to make informed choices to reduce the ecological impact of food production.

2012, Brazil | Green Economy: Does it Include You? #DoesItIncludeYou?

Twenty years after the Earth Summit, World Environment Day returned to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The theme “Green Economy: Does it Include You?” amplified UNEP’s efforts to create a more sustainable global financial order. The World Environment Day website posted more than 4.25 million visits, a new record at the time.

2011, India | Forests: Nature at Your Service

World Environment Day featured a friendly contest between actor Don Cheadle and entrepreneur Gisele Bündchen to see who can attract more social media followers. As part of the contest, Bündchen planted the first of 50,000 trees in Rio de Janeiro’s Grumari Municipal Park. People around the world registered more than 4,000 activities related to World Environment Day.

2010, Rwanda | Many Species. One Planet. One Future

World Environment Day’s Legacy Initiative raised more than US$85,000 for gorilla conservation and solar lighting in villages across host country, Rwanda. Voters in a global online competition chose names for several baby gorillas, spotlighting their threatened status during the International Year of Biodiversity.

2009, Mexico | Your Planet Needs You: Unite to Combat Climate Change

2008, new zealand | kick the habit towards a low carbon economy, 2007, norway | melting ice - a hot topic.

The theme “Melting Ice? – A Hot Topic”, marked the first of three consecutive years in which the day drew attention to climate change. It came just as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s  Fourth Assessment Report stated that warming of the climate was unequivocal.

2006, Algeria | Deserts and Desertification – Don’t Desert Drylands!

A decade after the UN Convention to Combat Desertification entered into force, World Environment Day delivered a reminder of the pressures on drylands when Algeria hosted the celebrations under the slogan “Deserts and Desertification – Don’t Desert Drylands!”

2005, United States of America | Green Cities: Plan for the Planet!

World Environment Day was held in North America for the first time, with San Francisco hosting hundreds of events around the theme “Green Cities: Plan for the Planet.” Held in the year the Kyoto Protocol came into force, the event included the participation of former United States of America Vice-President Al Gore and former Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom.

2004, Spain | Wanted! Seas and Oceans - Dead or Alive?

2003, lebanon | water - two billion people are dying for it.

The main celebrations took place in Beirut, Lebanon, a first for West Asia. The theme of “Water – Two Billion People are Dying for It!” was chosen in support of the International Year of Fresh Water.

2002, People's Republic of China | Give Earth a Chance

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan chose World Environment Day to launch the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, an unprecedented effort to map the health of the planet. Reflecting the theme “Connect with the World Wide Web of Life,” the international festivities took place across several cities: Torino, Italy; Havana, Cuba; Hue, Viet Nam; and Nairobi, Kenya.

2000, Australia | The Environment Millennium - Time to Act

UNEP launched a World Environment Day website, making it easy for people around the world to register their activities and build a sense of global community. The main events took place in Adelaide, Australia under the theme “The Environment Millennium – Time to Act,” ahead of the international summit that set out the Millennium Development Goals.

1999, Japan | Our Earth – Our Future – Just Save It!

Nigerian activist Ken Saro-Wiwa received a posthumous Global 500 award during World Environment Day celebrations in Ankara, Türkiye. With the award, World Environment Day threw a spotlight on the link between human and environmental rights.

South Africa played host a year after Nelson Mandela became president. Mandela attended the celebrations, drawing huge international attention to environmental themes. A year earlier, the anti-apartheid leader used the day to declare Cape Town’s Table Mountain a “gift to the Earth” and proof of South Africa's commitment to protect biodiversity.

1994, United Kingdom | One Earth One Family

China hosted World Environment Day in Beijing, raising environmental awareness in the world’s most populous nation, under the theme “Poverty and the Environment - Breaking the Vicious Circle.” The event returned to China in 2002, hosted by the city of Shenzhen.

World Environment Day was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the UN Conference on Environment and Development, better known as the Earth Summit. Nations negotiated landmark treaties on climate change, desertification and biodiversity, and set the course for contemporary sustainable development.

A year after the establishment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, celebrations hosted in Brussels, Belgium echoed mounting concern about global warming. The theme was revisited more than any other in subsequent World Environment Day campaigns.

The main celebrations began to rotate around the globe, starting in Bangkok, Thailand. The theme of “When People Put the Environment First, Development Will Last” came a year after the Brundtland Report laid out its influential blueprint for sustainability.

1987, Kenya | Environment and Shelter: More Than A Roof

UNEP marked the day at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, by presenting the first of its Global 500 awards to environmental champions including Wangari Maathai. The awards became a mainstay of World Environment Day celebrations through 2003.

1986, Canada | A Tree for Peace

The theme “A Tree for Peace” coincided with the International Year of Peace. Reflecting World Environment Day’s growing profile, political and religious leaders, including French President François Mitterrand, Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, took part in a global ceremony by planting a tree and stressing the links between conflict and environmental destruction.

The campaign drew attention to toxic chemicals in groundwater and food chains. The next year, UNEP’s Governing Council adopted the Montevideo Programme, setting priorities for global lawmaking that led to major international agreements restricting or eliminating an array of hazardous chemicals and pollutants.

The theme “Only One Future for Our Children” coincided with the International Year of the Child. For the first time, World Environment Day echoed a UN-designated international year, a trend that grew as environmental problems rose up on the global agenda.

UNEP used the day to highlight concern about the ozone layer, setting a trend for World Environment Day to generate vital early momentum on critical environmental issues. It took another 10 years to seal the landmark Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

The whole world, people celebrate World Environment Day every year on the 5th of June. This day, people from different places celebrate to spread the importance of the Environment to the upcoming generation and spread awareness between them to respect the beauty and greatness of the Environment to us and maintain the balance of nature on Earth. World Environment Day has been run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 1973. As we all know, the Environment is one of the most important aspects that play an important role in the survival of life and beauty on Earth. We can’t even imagine a single day without an environment. 

Most organizations, schools, colleges, universities, and other departments celebrate this beautiful day by planting tree saplings in the ground and also making decisions to protect them, feed them water, and make them healthy as we take care of our children. Many schools and colleges take students on tours in the forests, nurseries, and other botanical gardens to provide information about the different types of trees. The environment is God’s most important and precious gift to human beings and all the living creatures on Earth. There are certain elements that make the environment, such as air, water, soil, trees, atmosphere, oceans, land, forests, etc., all-important to us for survival. If these all remain undisturbed, then the existence of life continues till ages. 

But, somehow these all are going to damage because of the increase in the pollution in the atmosphere which disturbs the balance of the environment. Human activities are more responsible for the damage to the environment, such as deforestation, industrialization, mining, excavation, urbanization, transportation, etc all are responsible for these adverse effects. To stop these evil practices from the point of view of environmental protection, the UN has decided from an idea to create awareness regarding the environmental balance and appeal to them to protect the environment. We have to take strict actions and start campaigns to warn people to control pollution by using technology properly and using less conventional and non-renewable energies. Use eco-friendly and recyclable things by substituting harmful and non-recyclable things. It is our responsibility to protect our environment from the causes of pollution by reducing pollution and make people realize the importance of the environment by celebrating it on the 5th of June every year, since 1973.
