Utilizing and Interpreting Nutrition Data in Research

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has had active research and educational programs in India since the 1960s. However, the Mumbai-based India Research Center, an office of Harvard Global Research Support Centre India, is designed to broaden and coordinate the School’s existing collaborations and create new relationships with organizations and agencies across India.  The ultimate goal is to improve health in India and around the world through the strategic goals of research, training, and knowledge translation and communication.

Center researchers are engaged in a number of diverse projects , developing cases for the School’s DrPH program, convening workshops and symposiums on important public health topics, and designing a national communication strategy on mental health for the Indian ministry of health and family welfare, among many others.

We invite you to explore the India Research Center website and learn about our projects and collaborators.

Improving Health in India

As the world’s second-most-populous country and one of its fastest-growing economies, India faces both unique challenges and unprecedented opportunities in the sphere of public health.

For more than a decade, India has experienced record-breaking economic growth that has been accompanied by significant reductions in poverty. According to the World Bank, infant mortality in India fell from 66 to 38 per 1,000 live births from 2000 to 2015. Life expectancy at birth has increased from 63 to 68 years, and the maternal mortality ratio has fallen from 374 to 174 per 100,000 live births over the same period.

India also has dynamic pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries; world-class scientists, including a burgeoning clinical trials industry; and leading hospitals that attract foreign patients and treat its better-off citizens.

Yet Indian government and public health officials agree that the country also faces persistent and daunting public health challenges, particularly for the poor. These include child undernutrition and low birth weights that often lead to premature death or lifelong health problems; high rates of neonatal and maternal mortality; growth in noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and tobacco use, leading to cancer and other diseases; and high rates of road traffic accidents that result in injuries and deaths.

As the Indian government strives to provide comprehensive health coverage for all, the country’s rapidly developing health system remains an area of concern. There are disparities in health and health care systems between poorer and richer states and underfunded health care systems that in many cases are inefficiently run and underregulated. New government-financed health insurance programs are increasing coverage, but insurance remains limited.

Public and private health systems are placing huge demands on the country’s capacity to train exceptional health leaders and professionals. Rising to meet these challenges, the people of India have an opportunity to have a major influence on their own future health and on the future of public health and medical efforts globally.

Supporting Development of India’s Health Workforce

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is collaborating with partners across India to address those challenges. Together, the School and its partners are introducing educational innovations to India to expand skills training, degree programs, and leadership development at new schools and institutes of public health. We seek to leverage the School’s resources to help strengthen public health training and build capacity across the health sector in India.

Further, CSIR’s role in S&T human resource development is noteworthy.

Pioneer of India’s intellectual property movement, CSIR today is strengthening its patent portfolio to carve out global niches for the country in selected technology domains. CSIR is granted 90% of US patents granted to any Indian publicly funded R&D organization. On an average CSIR file about 200 Indian patents and 250 foreign patents per year. About 13.86% of CSIR patents are licensed - a number which is above the global average. Amongst its peers in publicly funded research organizations in the world, CSIR is a leader in terms of filing and securing patents worldwide. CSIR has pursued cutting edge science and advanced knowledge frontiers. The scientific staff of CSIR only constitute about 3-4% of India’s scientific manpower but they contribute to 10% of India’s scientific outputs. In 2012, CSIR published 5007 papers in SCI Journals with an average impact factor per paper as 2.673. In 2013, CSIR published 5086 papers in SCI journals with an average impact factor per paper as 2.868.

CSIR has operationalized desired mechanisms to boost entrepreneurship, which could lead to enhanced creation and commercialization of radical and disruptive innovations, underpinning the development of new economic sectors. CSIR has put in place CSIR@80: Vision & Strategy 2022 – New CSIR for New India.CSIR’s mission is “to build a new CSIR for a new India” and CSIR’s vision is to “Pursue science which strives for global impact, the technology that enables innovation-driven industry and nurtures trans-disciplinary leadership thereby catalyzing inclusive economic development for the people of India”.CSIR is ranked at 84th among 4851 institutions worldwide and is the only Indian organization among the top 100 global institutions, according to the Scimago Institutions Ranking World Report 2014. CSIR holds the 17th rank in Asia and leads the country at the first position.

Dr. Atul Narayan Vaidya

The CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) is a research institute created and funded by Government of India. It was established in Nagpur in 1958 with focus on water supply, sewage disposal, communicable diseases and to some extent on industrial pollution and occupational diseases found common in post-independent India.

NEERI is a pioneer laboratory in the field of environmental science and engineering and is constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). NEERI has five zonal laboratories at Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. NEERI comes under the Ministry of Science and Technology (India) of central government. The NEERI is an important partner organization in India’s POPs National Implementation Plan (NIP).

The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur was established in 1958 as Central Public Health Engineering Research Institute (CPHERI), when environmental concerns were limited to human health with a focus on water supply/sewage disposal/ communicable diseases and to some extent on industrial pollution and occupational diseases. The chemical and biological solutions to address these problems were simple, though challenging. However, slowly worldwide public awareness on the contamination of environment on regional to global scale started getting attention in 1970’s. Shrimati Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, rechristened the Institute as National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in the year 1974. National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur is devoted to research and innovations in environmental science and engineering besides solving a range of problems posed by industry, government and public.

Quality Objectives

NEERI strives to achieve excellence and continual improvement through activities leading to scientific and technological innovations, technical solutions, sharing knowledge and expertise for enabling government, industry, and society to improve quality of environment.

Enhanced R&D performance resulting in:

The sustainable improvement will be realised in terms of:

  • Publications (Number in SCI Journals and CIF)
  • Patents (Number)
  • ECF generation (Growth in %)

Enhanced customer satisfaction (CS Index)

Technologies developed and Transferred (Nos.)

  • Environmental information dissemination in terms of Website, NEERI Journals, Publications, Reports, Newsletters, Databases, etc.
  • Participation of scientists in societal missions and decision making in Government and industry

CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur Image

CSIR-NEERI has completed 63 year glorious service to the society as leading national research institution and has significant contributed to the growth of the industries and transforming lives of common man. As one of CSIR's premier Institute focussing on the environment, NEERI plays a very important role in defining Leadership in Environmental Science and Engineering for Sustainable Development. I have always believed that sustainable environment practices make a positive contribution to the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the communities they serve. Read More
