राजकीय कार्य –  dr babasaheb ambedkar social work in marathi

2021 | Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Social Work In Marathi

Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health

Jacquelyn Allen-Collinson

Despite a burgeoning corpus of qualitative studies of sport and physical cultures, in-depth and embodied investigations of those requiring sustained engagement with ‘endurance work’ remain relatively under-developed. These physical cultures are sociologically interesting as they often demand of practitioners intense commitment in terms of time, energy, and (for many) finances devoted to endurance-training regimes. They also require substantial sacrifice with regard to social activities and family life, even for those not competing at elite levels. The nature of endurance and enduring still remains under-researched from a sociological and qualitative perspective, however, and we directly address this gap in the research literature by contributing fresh theoretical insights and empirical data on the lived experience of endurance in two different lifeworlds: competitive swimming and distance running. Employing a sociological-phenomenological framework, we analyse and conceptualise data derived from two separate ethnographic and autoethnographic research projects, and explore interesting commonalities in the shared lived experience of endurance and ‘endurance work’ in these two distinctive physical cultures.

BACKGROUND:This paper deals with research inserted in the field of Sport History and interrelated with socio-cultural studies. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the emergence of badminton in the city of Montes Claros, located in the north of Minas Gerais, from its first manifestations to its rise in the city. METHODS: An investigation was carried out in documentary and printed sources, such as local newspapers that reported various events related to badminton in Montes Claros, as well as printed documents provided by some badminton teachers and professionals present in the city. Such sources were submitted to documentary analysis. RESULTS: The first vestiges of badminton, in Montes Claros, date from 2007. Badminton had different local newspapers as cooperators for this practice, addressing different episodes in the region and allowing the conquest of space within the socio-cultural panorama of Minas Gerais. From this movement, the Montes Claros Badminton Association (ABdMOC) emerges, with the social objective of providing and encouraging the practice of badminton and parasports (parabadminton), in addition to sustaining the opportunity for a healthy sports practice. Then, with its expansion, the conception of the Badminton Team of the Athletic Association Banco do Brasil (AABB) was carried out, with a competitive sporting character, resulting in the contribution to the development of the practice in the region. CONCLUSION: Evidence of the first manifestations and increase of badminton in Montes Claros were identified, as well as the extent to which access to this cultural practice has been expanded over the last few years in the city, contributing to the local cultural development. Important collaborators who made and continue to make badminton expand and be appreciated have also been unveiled, which makes this study a pillar for future scientific research, due to the low number of historical and socio-cultural articles about badminton.

Herpes zoster (HZ, shingles) affects individuals (60+ years) by reactivation of varicella virus from primary infection. Approximately one-third of the general population will develop HZ and are at increased risk of stroke. Our objective was describing possible associations between self-reported HZ vaccination and stroke with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System, a cross-sectional nationwide telephone survey. Non-institutionalized U.S. adults answered items concerning health risk behaviors. 2014 survey data were from 265,568 adults 50–79 years old. Multivariable Cox regressions adjusted for standard demographics, body mass index, and coronary heart disease showed that HZ-vaccinated individuals had lower risk of reporting stroke those not vaccinated (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.73). After stratification of participants into six 5-year age groups, adjusted weighted binary logistic regressions were conducted for each age group with strok...

The Master of Social Work (MSW) Programme started in the academic year 2016-17 to set a milestone in the history of Social Work education in the University of Mumbai. It was a response to the crucial need for professional Social Work intervention in the state and in the country. We are proud that our students, trained in the highest values of the profession will be contributing toward fulfilling that need. The MSW program addresses the traditional areas of Social Work and also includes the new advances from the field into the curriculum. The pedagogy is a fine balance of theory and field-based practice with an underlying emphasis on inclusivity in social and economic justice. The focus is on nurturing creativity while encouraging diversity. We have always sought to offer an academically enriching environment for students who share our commitment to serve the most marginalized and the underprivileged.

The Nature of the Course

The university provides a generic course of studies at the MSW level. The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is followed.  The curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that the student has a broad base of the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to function in diverse field of Social Work settings. Despite being generic, the course also encourages the students to deepen their interest in certain specific areas through the type of fieldwork selected, research study undertaken, term paper topic chosen and optional subjects selected as electives. Full time and visiting faculties will teach courses (papers) according to their specialisations.  The curriculum consists of relevant aspects of both theory and field work to help students enhance their practical understanding of social work practice. Theoretical perspectives provided in the programmes hope to achieve the following objectives:

  • Acquire knowledge of the functioning of individuals and groups in social systems, the interrelationships between them and the manner in which they promote or impede a healthy social functioning,
  • Obtain knowledge from other disciplines which contribute to the understanding of persons in the bio-psycho-social matrix,
  • Develop professional capacity for identification of issues and problems violating the human rights of groups and communities and design effective responses for affecting a meaningful change in their situation,
  • Attain the capacity to select and order priorities, to plan, to make realistic goals, and select appropriate strategies to fulfil the goals,
  • Develop skills in the utilization of social work intervention methods and adopt ethical practices using the principles of the profession while working with individuals and families, groups and communities.

The course is full time and requires rigorous field work. The total number of credits earned by the learner on successful completion of the MSW course is 96 credits. It is offered under the Faculty of Arts.

Field Work is an integral part of the programme of training in social work. It comprises learning professional social work practice under the guidance of trained field instructors in selected Government and Non- Government organizations. It enables the student to see the applicability of theoretical knowledge taught in the classroom to actual situations requiring social work intervention. It is both goal-oriented to solve a particular problem to which the student addresses his / her activities and learner-centred in relation to his / her particular interest areas and aptitudes. Field work has the dual purpose of promoting the student’s own learning while contributing to the development of the people with whom he / she works, especially the disadvantaged sections of our society. Currently the department is associated with more than 35 Government and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Practical experience in fieldwork aims at the following objectives:

  • Provide opportunity for the integration of classroom learning and field practice and vice-versa (feedback mechanism for both class and field),
  • Develop skills through learning how to utilize the knowledge learnt in the classroom for analysis of problems affecting the target groups and selection of the appropriate means for problem-solving,
  • Cultivate attitudes, values and commitments of the profession relevant to working with the most disadvantaged sections of society,
  • Develop awareness of self and the way in which student’s behaviour is affected by past experiences and cultural factors, and the way in which these affect the perceptions of their response to others.

Students will be required to maintain regular recordings of the fieldwork done during the course of their study. All students are required to dress appropriately, giving due respect to the socio-cultural practices of the people whom they work with while at fieldwork.

For the field work students will be placed at various Agencies in urban, rural and tribal areas. A few Tribal, Nomadic Tribal and Urban Slums will be selected for field action project by the Programme where student have to regularly contribute for the development of the Communities.

Research: Boards Still Have an ESG Expertise Gap — But They’re Improving

  • Tensie Whelan

social work research in marathi

Over the last five years, the percentage of Fortune 100 board members possessing relevant credentials rose from 29% to 43%.

The role of U.S. public boards in managing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues has significantly evolved over the past five years. Initially, boards were largely unprepared to handle materially financial ESG topics, lacking the necessary background and credentials. However, recent developments show a positive shift, with the percentage of Fortune 100 board members possessing relevant ESG credentials rising from 29% to 43%. This increase is primarily in environmental and governance credentials, while social credentials have seen less growth. Despite this progress, major gaps remain, particularly in climate change and worker welfare expertise. Notably, the creation of dedicated ESG/sustainability committees has surged, promoting better oversight of sustainability issues. This shift is crucial as companies increasingly face both regulatory pressures and strategic opportunities in transitioning to a low carbon economy.

Knowing the right questions to ask management on material environmental, social, and governance issues has become an important part of a board’s role. Five years ago, our research at NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business found U.S. public boards were not fit for this purpose — very few had the background and credentials necessary to provide oversight of  ESG topics such as climate, employee welfare, financial hygiene, and cybersecurity. Today, we find that while boards are still woefully underprepared in certain areas, there has been some important progress .

Zambia visit shows SSW’s global impact

A UNC School of Social Work delegation saw how their research helped a nonprofit create jobs in rural areas.

A small delegation from the UNC School of Social Work visited the growing rural town of Solwezi (population 90,000) in the North-Western Province of Zambia in March. They came to learn about the impact of local women’s savings and credit groups and their financial literacy training.

The trip was coordinated by Gina Chowa and Rain Masa from the school’s center for  Global Social Development Innovations in partnership with longtime collaborator Mathias Zimba, executive director of  Rising Fountains Development Program in Zambia.

“As partners, we work together to identify ideas and practices that will change lives for the better,” Masa said. “Researchers and graduate students at the school can help build the evidence needed to demonstrate to policymakers, officials and the business community what is needed to  improve the lives of rural Zambians .”

Improving lives in six countries

Masa is an associate professor who also serves as GSDI’s research director. He has worked collaboratively on both economic security and HIV treatment projects with Rising Fountains, a Zambian nonprofit dedicated to improving the livelihoods of women and children in rural areas.

Masa emphasized how community involvement localizes these economic programs and increases their chance of success and relevance.

“Economic security is the focal point of our work,” said Masa. “We provide funding and, maybe more importantly, we are available to Mathias and his team for ongoing capacity support as well.”

Paving career paths

During the visit to her native Zambia, Chowa was visibly moved at the end of a day spent at a teen center and a church. The delegation heard from over a dozen enthusiastic groups of about 20 women each and the men who had joined in support of them.

“These people. This is why I do the work I do,” Chowa said.

Following the presentations, the delegation went to see the small business owners in action. These included a man who bought spare parts for just one bicycle and now runs a repair shop with several assistants, craftswomen who purchased a sewing machine and yarn to create and sell clothing, and a woman who uses a mobile phone and SIM cards to help townspeople make financial transactions.

“This is not about politics,” said one Solwezi community leader. “I stand in the middle in support of our people helping better their lives and those of their families.”

At the end of the visit, local residents piled baskets full of sweet melons, gourds and pineapples at the front of a small church as parting gifts.

“The bounty and generosity of spirit of the nearly 150 people of Solwezi whom we visited with earlier this month made a lasting impression,” said Alice Washington, a longtime member of the school’s advisory board.

Apple's iPhone skid in China continues, with another big hit to start 2024

Apple's iPhone 15

social work research in marathi

All smartphone sales have been in decline in China for some years, but recent reports had said the market was stabilizing . Other reports have said that iPhone sales in the country dropped 56% between January 2024 and February 2024, though this is traditionally when Apple's sales are lowest.

Now new figures from Counterpoint Research have compared like for like quarters, charting Q1 2024 against Q1 2023. Citing Huawei's 69.9% year on year growth as the major factor, Counterpoint says that the iPhone dropped 19.1% over the same period.

Bar chart comparing China smartphone sales market share for Q1 2023 vs Q1 2024 with percentage changes for leading brands.

The company says that Huawei has targeted the same premium market as Apple, but also notes that upgrade demand for the iPhone has been "slightly subdued compared to previous years."

During Apple's earnings call in February 2024 , the company reported that sales in China were down 13% year over year. That amounts to $20.82 billion in iPhone sales in China.

Counterpoint does say that it is charting "slow but steady improvement" in iPhone sales "from week to week." It also expects that AI announcements at WWDC could have a marked impact, although presumably not until the launch of the iPhone 16 .

From literature to AI: UC grad shares career path to success

Humanities and storytelling lead to lucrative tech entrepreneurship.

Before Katie Trauth Taylor worked with international organizations like NASA, Boeing and Hershey, and before receiving accolades for her work in the generative AI space, she was in a much different industry – English and literature.

Taylor earned her master's in English and Comparative Literature in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences. She completed her educational journey at Purdue University with a doctorate degree in rhetoric and composition. After working as a graduate assistant at Purdue and UC, she became a research professor at Miami University.

It might seem from there that her career was set—perhaps a tenured professorship or a university administrative position. That might have been her path, but Taylor had her eyes set on different goals.

So how did Taylor transition from literature and composition to tech entrepreneurship? She enjoys sharing that part of her story.

“I love that question, and I think it's so important for everyone in the humanities to see that they have just as much entrepreneurial potential as any other person.”

Taylor founded Untold Content in 2015, jumping from academia to entrepreneurship.  Untold Content is a business-to-business content strategy company that recognizes storytelling patterns and frameworks that will help innovative companies make their ideas, clear, compelling and impactful to an audience.

She then took innovation to the next level in 2022 with the launch of Narratize, a generative-AI storytelling platform that transforms the ideas of scientific, technical and medical innovators into impactful and detailed content and stories quickly.

It's so important for everyone in the humanities to see that they have just as much entrepreneurial potential as any other person.

Katie Trauth Taylor Entrepreneur and A&S master's grad in English

English to entrepreneurship

With 10 years of successful partnerships with lucrative companies like AAA and Boeing, Taylor is just getting started. And yet, it took a while for her to get here.

“I think sometimes we feel stuck—like, ‘I have to follow a path because I made us a choice about what to major in or what to study.’

“But really, once you get out into the workforce, you see that everything is almost interdisciplinary and you can see and cut across those boundaries more seamlessly as long as you're a strong critical thinker, a great communicator, and hungry to constantly learn.”

Taylor was just that person during college. As she matriculated through her institutions, she formed bonds and met many mentors along the way who pushed her towards starting her own business.

“I think wherever you want to grow in your professional life, you just have to ask those questions. Ask ‘what do I need to learn to get there and find my mentors?’ And sometimes, mentors are thrust upon you in the most wonderful ways. And it surprises you,” said Taylor.

Along the way she continued her love for storytelling and sharing that passion. And yet, she felt that she could help scientists, tech moguls, and medical professionals share their stories in more effective and impactful manners.

“I had a mentor somewhere along the way, who said ‘look me in the eyes. You know, you could just start a business, right?’”

And Taylor did just that with Untold Content while she was a research professor at Miami University. Untold Content kept growing and growing, so she made her decision and pursued her new passion full-time, as the leader of the then up-and-coming narrative storytelling strategy company.

Making her mark in tech

“I never got a business degree, but here I am running my second company,” Taylor said.

The generative AI leader took herself into a new avenue of business and networking. However, she identified the potential of using generative AI to push the ideas of innovators in science, technology and medicine into impactful storytelling and long-form content.  As such, she found what would be her company’s foothold in the tech industry.

“We came to generative AI as a way to solve a problem that we had already discovered, so we already knew the problem. The problem was, it is so challenging to communicate effectively within science, tech and medical industries, and there are so many roadblocks related to that,” said Taylor.

“I've always been in love with that problem. So, we were in this really intensive moment in my first company where we were trying to ask ‘how do we solve that problem at scale?’And so, we were designing tech platform for communicating internally and help people craft more clear and impactful messages.”

She received the perfect gem of knowledge pertaining to this issue during her time at UC from associate professor of English Laura Micciche—a lesson at the basis of her women-led companies.

UC for me was completely life-changing. The people I met were the most generous and thoughtful subject-matter experts that I have ever met, and they remain strong forces in my success today.

Katie Trauth Taylor A&S alum, tech entrepreneur

“Laura Micciche taught me about rhetoric and composition and the way that words hold power and how they structure society and public rhetoric the way they shape opinion,” Taylor said.

Taylor and her company never left their storytelling roots. Her team consists of data scientists, engineers, and ‘narrative scientists,’ people who are science, tech and medical communicators with journalistic and marketing backgrounds.

“Narrative scientists see the way words make meaning. And that is essentially the design of the predictive models,” said Taylor. “That is the most exciting, possible moment to be able to bring those diverse skill sets together.  That's where the magic happens with Gen AI. And that's where we see solutions that will actually be transformative.”

The teams at Narratize and Untold Content continue with these tenets in mind under Taylor’s leadership.

To the future

Narratize and Untold Content work to help a variety of stakeholders understand the ideas and insights of innovators around the world, from consumers to potential investors. However, given the recent surge in open AI, creatives like journalists and marketers are concerned.

AI software continues to evolve, and as technology advances, it is inevitable that jobs may be lost. And yet, Taylor has her own response to this question: ‘What happens to creatives as AI continues to get better?'

“It's the question everybody is asking. How do we keep pace with this rapid rise of technology? We set out really early on to ask how do we empower people? How do we do AI with good intent?”

One of the major pillars of both companies is to keep AI in the hands of creatives and to ensure AI is nothing but human-led.

“And that means that we design the user experience to pull insights from the person and to support the person in their workflow and embed the AI into those workflows so they can be more effective in their work and do that more efficiently.”

The focus is on teaching and empowering creatives with generative AI, and according to Taylor, the best path forward is through embracing AI and maintaining focus on amplifying storytelling. An emphasis on focus that she strengthened during her time at UC.

"UC for me was completely life-changing. The people I met were the most generous and thoughtful subject-matter experts that I have ever met," Taylor said, "and they remain strong forces for my success today."
