Science has invented various means of telephonic communication which are very useful in our every-day life. In fact, fast communication system has speeded up our working. Maximum work is being carried out through communication. Those were the days, when man was going long distance even for petty works. The rich gained much by exploiting the poor workers. The use of machinery to the service of man resulted in more evils.

On the other hand, millions of dollars are being spent on the inventions of dangerous war weapons. In the modern world, corruption and lust are also gifts of science. Man’s life is becoming more and more artificial.

Man is becoming slave of machines and scientific gadgets day by day. it had produced many horrible weapons like atom and hydrogen bombs, missiles, etc. The examples of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are there. We have so many deadly weapons of such great dimensions that they can destroy the whole world many times over. But for this science is not to be blamed. The evil is within us. We have conquered elements and space but we have yet to conquer the devil within us. It is useless to blame science as a cause. It is the man himself who is responsible for the so-called ills of science.

Science has been a blessing in many ways. We now lead a far more comfortable and luxurious life than our forefathers did.

Science has made our lives very comfortable. We live in bigger and better houses. We enjoy the benefits of electricity We can cool our houses with air conditioners and fans and we can keep them warm with central heating. Electricity helps us to light up our houses, cook our food, warm our water, and keep our food fresh. Science has given us electric lights, electric stoves, toasters, geysers and refrigerators. We are saved the trouble of going up and down stairs because we can use a lift. We can switch on the radio or the TV and entertain ourselves at home.

We lead a longer and healthier life because of science. In olden days several diseases proved fatal. Today a cure has been found for many fatal diseases and incurable diseases. So man now has a chance to lead a longer and healthier life than is olden days. Thanks to science we can go about speedily from place to place. Science has provided us with cars, buses, electric trains, steamships and jet planes. No one can say now that he is unable to move quickly from one place to another.

But there is also another side of the picture. Fast living has deprived man from peace of mind. He has to face noise all the time. He cannot rest peacefully in a calm atmosphere. Moving at speed does not allow man to enjoy the beauties of nature and of the countryside. Let us not forget that science has also invented the atom bomb and other nuclear weapons. These weapons are a constant threat to the peace and safety of mankind. Two destructive world wars have already been fought.

A third world war might break out at any time now subsequent to the horrendous terrorist attack on U.S.A. on the eleventh of September 2001. Thus science can cause destruction and be a curse to mankind. Another way in which it can be curse is by causing pollution. In industrial places the air is polluted with smoke from the factories. This pollution threatens the health of people who live in those places. Most of the major cities in the world are surrounded by many industrial units and have huge numbers of vehicles plying on their streets. The city dweller is thus exposed to a severe pollution threat and diseases caused by them. So we see that science can be both a blessing and a curse to mankind.

Electricity is one of the greatest wonders of modern science. The growth of fast modes of transport and communication has changed the world into global village. In the field of agriculture, science has helped in increasing the crop production and improving quality. Science has enabled man to diagnose and treat many dangerous diseases. Information technology and computers have revolutionized our life-styles. But, the boon of science, in many cases, has been turned into bane because of its misuse. Science has posed a threat to the very existence of mankind with weapons-nuclear, biological, atomic, chemical etc. Cyber crime is the latest addition to crimes’ list. Misapplication of science has brought mankind to the path of destruction. We should use science to get its blessings and not misuse it to make it a curse.

Science has revolutionized the human existence. Much of the progress that mankind has made in different fields right from the stone age to the modern age is due to the progress made in the field of science. Not only material progress but also the mental outlook of man has been influenced by it. It has made man’s life happier and more comfortable. Agriculture, business, transport, communication and medicine to name a few are all highly indebted to the wonders, science has produced. We have become scientifically more advanced from our ancestors. This is because the world has undergone a tremendous change because of the rapid strides made by the science and technology.

Electricity is one of the greatest wonders of modern science. It is a source of energy. It can run any type of machinery. With the help of electricity, we can light our rooms, run buses and trains, and lift water for irrigation.

The discovery and development of a large number of powerful energy sources-coal, petroleum, natural gas, electricity etc. have enabled humanity to conquer the barriers of nature. All this has facilitated the growth of fast modes of transport and communication, which in turn has changed the world into a global village. Science has given man the means of traveling-cars, trains, aero-planes, ships etc. man has even traveled to the moon.

Science is a help in the agriculture field too. The food production levels and quality have improved by multiple factors. Soil analysis, hybrid varieties of crops giving higher yield, fertilizers, pesticides, advanced tools and machinery, irrigation equipments, etc. have increased the production of crops.

Today, we have scores of meteorological satellites in outer space sending data, pictures to earth stations helping agriculture scientists find and analyze soil patterns. They also help them trace progress of rains, winds and even locusts that endanger crops.

Satellites even forewarn about natural calamities, like hurricanes which cause mass destruction. Science has enabled man to diagnose and treat many dangerous diseases. Open heart surgeries, organ transplants etc. have all become possible. A number of killer diseases are now curable. Diseases such as smallpox, polio, plague, malaria etc. have now almost been eradicated. Hidden diseases in the body can be diagnosed easily with the help of X-rays. Scientists have succeeded in cloning animals. The methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment have developed with a rapid speed. As a result of this much progress in medical science, man finds himself more safe, secure and his average age has lengthened.

Man, with the help of science, has been able to increase longevity, arrest the gradual decay of human body and control the spread of lethal diseases by making extraordinary life prolonging drugs and medicines. Science has provided us with many means of education and entertainment. The television, video, radio, computer, internet etc. have enabled the human race to enrich its knowledge about various places, persons, birds, animals etc.

Information technology and computers have revolutionized our life-styles. Automation in banks and railway stations have provided relief to the public and staff alike. Ticketing and reservation have become more efficient and convenient. In medical diagnosis, computers are being used to locate and investigate accurately and precisely any abnormalities or diseases. Internet has some very useful applications in our day-to-day life. Mobile phones are outcome of information technology. But at the same time it cannot be denied that the boon in many cases, has turned to be bane. There are innumerous examples which prove that science-a blessing has been turned into a curse.

Sir Alfred Nobel experimented with dynamite to clear huge mountains to turn it into productive land. but modern man is using it to kill his fellow human beings and destroy nature. The destructive potential of atomic energy was witnessed in August 1945, when the United States dropped atom booms on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those who survived the nuclear bombing suffered from its aftermath. It is a horrible fact that much of the national income of even a developing country is spent on acquiring latest weapons, bombs and missiles. Guns, revolvers, tanks and fighter planes, explosives, nuclear bombs etc. were invented to develop a strong security system to protect the innocent masses, but their misuse is now crushing humanity. Apart from atomic weapons, man has also started stockpiling biological and chemical weapons. These weapons are also extremely dangerous.

Biotechnology is a great boon for fighting the diseases. But along with medicines lethal biological weapons have also been developed. Germs are deliberately released into the air to spread diseases. Anthrax envelopes are used for spreading terrorism.

The negative effects of the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, used to increase yield, are now evident. soil salinity has increased. Traces of DDT are found in plants.

Establishment and expansion of factories has resulted in all round pollution. Motor vehicles emit a lot of poisonous material into the atmosphere. This has led to the depletion of the ozone layer and global warming.

Television, a good source of entertainment, education and information, has its negative effects too. There are many programmes which promote violence and vulgarity, and teenagers are more interested in watching these programmes. Aggressiveness and violence at an early age have lead to shocking crimes. Sometimes, even the nature people learn and apply different methods of crime by watching serials and movies.

The power of the internet is being abused by the widespread use of pornographic material. Lots of people spend their time in chat rooms for obscene discussions.

Science has two faces-good and bad. It depends on us which face we want to see. If we use the gifts of science in positive direction with positive intention then it will provide us with sweet results but if we use it in the wrong way the results will definitely be bitter. To save ourselves and the world as a whole from destruction, we should follow the right way to use the gifts of science so that it appears as a blessing and not as a curse.

This is the day we will sink our own home – it is old, they say, and can’t live forever. I’m among the ones who must lock the dome behind us and throw the keys in the river of stardust in which we’ve swum for so long. Happy new year! The cry goes up far below us in waves, while we plot to do great wrong to this ship in space. No keening in sorrow: These are my orders. Death first by fireworks, our vessel burned alive like a sailing boat lit aflame at sea by men gone berserk with grief. The saltwater will keep it afloat as long as it can. For the rest of time it will lie in pieces, like a heart once mine.

For many years now, through writing fictional stories and making experimental films , I have been trying to see things from the point of view of space objects – real ones that have been launched by humans into outer space.

I’ve imagined the inner and outer lives of space objects like Starman (the mannequin launched by SpaceX in a midnight-cherry Tesla); the first sculpture left on the Moon; the International Space Station; and the Voyager spacecraft now in interstellar space. At heart, my goal has been to understand why humans pour so much meaning into space objects.

I’ve become fascinated by the emotional attachments many people – and especially scientists – form with these objects, from small spacecraft to satellites to space stations. Deep emotions (like grief and love) are often expressed for these objects by space scientists, astronomers, engineers and astronauts who would not, in their ordinary line of work, be expected to think at all about their feelings for inanimate machines or space infrastructure.

“Every object humans have launched into the solar system is a statement,” notes the space archaeologist Alice Gorman , and each “tells the story of our attitudes to space at a particular point in time”.

In political theorist Jane Bennett’s definition , an object is enchanting if it leaves humans “transfixed, spellbound” and “struck and shaken”. This is almost always the case for space objects. They seem to give scientists permission to share emotions that would otherwise be kept hidden.

Coddled and mourned

In 2016, the team in charge of the Rosetta spacecraft grieved openly after Rosetta was crashed on purpose into the comet it had been observing. The mood in the control room was described as “ funereal ”.

During a Zoom talk in 2021, Morgan Cable (an Ocean World Astrochemist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory ) was asked by a member of the public what the most memorable project in her career has been.

She responded with raw emotion, paying tribute to the strong bond scientists can form with their space objects, and describing how she felt about the Cassini-Huygens robotic spacecraft launched in 1997 to study Saturn and its moons:

Right near the end of Cassini’s life [in 2015], it was running out of gas, and we didn’t want it to just drift around the Saturn system […] We had cleaned it but hadn’t sterilized it – so we had to put Cassini in a safe place where it couldn’t contaminate other worlds. We did this beautiful swan dive into Saturn, a place with no liquid water, so that we could preserve future worlds – like Encephalus and Titan – for future explorers, without being contaminated. When we said farewell to Cassini in that beautiful swan dive … [the] spacecraft …[was] part of our family. We grew to love and became a part of it. It was incredibly difficult to say goodbye to that spacecraft.

American astronaut Don Pettit lovingly wrote from the perspective of a real, living zucchini plant grown on the ISS (along with broccoli and sunflower seedlings) to create his wildly popular Diary of a Space Zucchini blog after he’d returned from the station. This little seedling, an object of research, struggles into existence and tries to make sense of the human world around it. In the following excerpt from his blog, “Gardener” is the zucchini’s name for the astronaut who tends to it:

Excitement is in the air. Gardener said we will soon be returning to Earth. Our part of the mission is nearly complete and the new crew will take over for us. I am a bit worried about Broccoli, Sunflower, and me. If Gardener leaves, who will take care of us? And what about little Zuc? He is now a big sprout and ready to branch out on his own. Gardener talked about pressing us. I am not sure what that means; this does not sound good.

In certain contexts, this “love” scientists feel for space objects can be openly expressed – even for a zucchini being grown in microgravity, for instance, through a whimsical and sweet narrative voice.

This is quite different to the emotional rules usually governing any scientific engagement with objects of study. Anthropologist Anna L. Tsing has observed that natural scientists can be deeply interested “in the lives of the nonhuman subjects being studied,” but “mainly on the condition that the love didn’t show”.

More recently, certain climate scientists have begun to express their own ecological (or climate) grief openly , in spite of the professional pressure to hide their emotions when it comes to their ultimate research subject (or object): our planet Earth.

Yet this taboo against scientists feeling a genuine emotional connection to the objects of their research does not always seem to apply to scientists making, launching or studying space objects.

The scientists and technical team in ground control for the Spirit Mars rover mission spoke often of Spirit as if “she” were alive during her seven years of active work on Mars, anthropomorphising Spirit into an object of adoration. Said one team member , “She’s a stubborn old girl and she’s hanging in there, and she is not going to give up”.

The Opportunity Mars rover (Spirit’s twin), simultaneously exploring another part of Mars during the same mission, was gendered as male by the control team. Opportunity got trapped in a dust storm at one stage, and “his” battery power began to drain.

Steve Squyres, the lead scientist, describes having “this horrible, helpless feeling because there was nothing we could do … [i]t was like Mars was trying to kill our machine”. Squyres later reflected on all that the two rovers had been asked by humans to do, using a parenting analogy of needing to let a child grow up and become resilient and independent:

When we first built [them], we babied them, we coddled them, we dressed up in funny suits, we had rubber gloves on, we tiptoed around them and were extremely careful […] [n]ow they are scratched, beat up, and dirty.

When Spirit was on her last legs, and the team had to come to terms with the fact that her mission was over, Squyres admitted, “It hit me harder than I thought it would […] emotionally”.

Envoys of humankind

All of these objects are our proxies in outer space. Once they are out there, representing us in places we have been unable to go, they become the “envoys” of humankind (as human astronauts are defined in Article V of the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty).

This is an impossible task, of course. How can the twin Voyager spacecraft, for instance – the most distant human-made objects, currently in interstellar space – carry the full representational burden of who we are? They are doomed to fail. But maybe we think of them as loveable because of this very vulnerability.

Bruno Latour, the French sociologist and anthropologist of science and technology, was never afraid to inhabit radically different perspectives, including those of objects and infrastructure. He wrote a novel-of-sorts – half whodunnit, half sociological tome – partly from the perspective of ARAMIS, the high-tech subway system planned for Paris in the 1980s that never came into being.

In certain sections of this novel (called Aramis, or the Love of Technology ) the system itself speaks, making its case to the humans who essentially betrayed or failed it (engineers, officials, a sociologist) and reminding them it has desires too, but depends on the human and technical networks around it to survive.

Latour is alive to the reciprocal flow of relationships between humans, objects and institutions, and advocates dissolving boundaries between things considered to be artificial and those considered to be natural.

As Australian sociologist of science Annie Handmer notes in her interpretation of this novel , Latour “slowly makes his reader fall in love with this ingenious, complicated, and enchanting train”. He asks us to acknowledge the network of relationships in which we’re entwined with things, networks that have both emotional and social resonance.

The “imagined conversations between components of its engine,” Handmer writes, “evoke an emotional affection in us for the technology that makes it all the more heartbreaking when Latour tells us that ARAMIS died because no-one loved it enough”.

Latour’s approach was particularly useful to me while I was writing from the perspective of the International Space Station in my collection of short stories Only the Astronauts . Like ARAMIS, the ISS is a major infrastructure project, among the most expensive ever undertaken by humans. The ISS, of course, did not fail before it could live, but it has always been dependent for survival on a nexus of human-technical elements made even more complex by its location in space, and the multinational nature of its governance.

The ISS has inspired big emotions like love and awe in humans. One could say it will “die” within the next decade because we aren’t “loving” it enough. The ISS’s international mission and cooperative management will not be sustained for much longer, leading to its inevitable deorbit in the next five to ten years (unless some kind of public-private partnership is created to “rescue” it).

In some mainstream media coverage, this decision to deorbit the ISS has been described as an “ abandonment ” of the space station.

From love to fear

Yet through the course of my research, I began to notice that space objects once deemed enchanting and “loveable” could suddenly start to seem threatening to humans. The ways in which they can survive and thrive outside of our will and designs for them can sometimes shade into a kind of horror of the undead.

Abandoned places and objects that refuse to decay, that persist in spite of no longer having a living human presence to give their existence meaning, become spooky. Our feelings for these objects can shade dark, into uncanny and eerie territory. We love these objects for going where we cannot, but we can also start to fear them for this, and for living so long. They scare us by not dying.

This passage from a recent non-fiction book about space exploration ( Ad Astra: An Illustrated Guide to Leaving the Planet ) struck me for this reason. Note how quickly the abandoned Russian space station, Salyut 7 – once it persists beyond human use value – becomes the site of a Gothic nightmare:

On 2 October 1984, the Soyuz T-10 crew […] prepared to leave Salyut 7. As they were shutting up shop, preparing the station to be temporarily mothballed in automatic mode, they left the customary crackers and salt on the table as a gift for the next crew […] But after they left and returned to earth, a transmitter malfunction led to a short-circuiting of the electronics and all the electrical systems shut down […] The station was dead […] With its solar panels no longer facing towards the sun, it began to freeze […] Spit would freeze to the walls and icicles hung from the pipes […] The crackers were waiting for them on the fold-down table.

Humans can become haunted by space objects once we no longer know if they are still there or not, or in what form they persist. It has only recently been acknowledged that re-entry particles from objects, satellites and spacecraft burning up in Earth’s atmosphere don’t simply disappear, but form a kind of ghostly toxic dust that may, over time, contribute to global warming. These objects can quite literally come back to haunt us, even if they seem to have dropped out of orbit and disappeared.

There is some ambivalence, then, in how we think and feel about space objects. They are our dignified emissaries to other worlds and will be justly rewarded with immortality (and expressions of love, even from hardened space scientists).

Once they are no longer responsive to our commands, however, they might be recast as dangerous trash that can kill us: just one bit of space junk the wrong size hitting the ISS could make it immediately uninhabitable, for instance.

Space objects are sacrificial offerings we make to the universe, sent on journeys into the unknown. They are banal things that suddenly become vibrant objects – spiritual relics – because they have touched the celestial void.

They may depend on us for their survival if they’re in orbit, and we may still have the power to bring some of them back down; but the ones that escape further out will eventually have their freedom and agency, whether we want them to or not.

Every launch of a space object is a birth and a death. For the object, it is the start of a grand adventure, one that – if the object is lucky – may take place outside human surveillance, under cover of the mystery of space.

Space objects resist our interpretations of what they mean, even as we want them to mean so much, even as we feel so much for them. This is an important reminder that it is a political act to take a non-human perspective, and to consider the agency, subjectivity, sociality and power of things – not just living things, but non-living things – in co-making the world.

This awareness that humans are not in total control, and that – as social scientists are pointing out – we have responsibilities to those “non-human beings [that] share our paths” can bring up mixed feelings for us as a species. These are exactly the kinds of feelings that fiction writers and filmmakers can mine.

My invented stories are, in one sense, just another layer of narrative that is being forced upon certain space objects. I can claim that I am on their side, that I write these imagined stories in tribute to their wild spirit, their anarchic and fertile disobedience to human control, or out of the same wells of love and grief that space scientists express for their rovers, or that astronauts express for their space plant seedlings.

Yet in truth, it is in their total and frustrating silence that space objects remain a site of resistance to human meaning-making. Maybe this is why we adore them so much, fear them when they stop responding, and grieve their destruction so openly: because our love for them is unrequited.

Today science and technology come to play key role in almost every branch of human activity. The wondrous advancement of science and technology in different spheres has completely changed the pace of way of living of the present society. If our forefathers could rise from their grave they would be amazed and bewildered to see the present world. In the field of education, health, transportation, banking, defense, communication, the progressive use of newer scientific and technological equipment, have changed the spectrum of functioning. The gradual use of computers in all walks of life has changed the means and modes of utilizing time and energy of present society.

 Blessing: Every new invention have its merits and demerits. No invention is itself a blessing or a curse, it is its use which the human being does to make it a blessing.

The higher food production and better quality of food grains arc possible due  to rapid progress in irrigation facilities and by the use of hybrid seeds and technically very easily operable tools and machinery. Today agriculture is to a great extent free from the vagaries of nature, rain or no rain, scant rain or excess rain, in any kind of weather a good production is ensured at least in developed countries. Dependence on wind, sun for air and light has since been a matter of ancient past. Comfort by coolers, AC and light through electricity has become very common. In the field of education. the distance learning through satellite, the on line education, the progressive use of internet is also a common feature.

 Sitting in India, one can well be taught by a professor delivering lecture in USA and can also put questions with the help of technologically advanced devices.

 The mind bogging advancement in the field of communication have brought the whole world in a small room. The network of satellites, computer network, internet. have decimated all the geographical barriers and brought the world so closer that one can communicate with a person sitting at millions of miles away through video conferencing as if looking face to face.

The tremendous advancement in nuclear technology, medical science, biotechnology etc. have made almost everything possible. The forecasting of weather. surgery of brain. Heart transplantation, heart valve change, planting of every human organ including eyes limbs and every bone has made a man more than immortal. The   progress in bio-science in genetic engineering has made the man envying wilh God.  The cloning of sheep has become a reality and now researches are being made in cloning of human being.

In the field of space technology, the Moon, Mars, has since explored by the man and efforts are being made to explore the other hidden secrets o! universe. Everyday new stars, new space bodies are being discovered. In addition to the inventions and discoveries made by science and technology, it has made the human life full of comforts and luxuries, all kinds of entertaining mode are available at hand.

A very important aspect of advancement in the field of science and technology is the analytical reasoning and removal of various orthodox cal and superstitious beliefs thus enlightening the common people.

Science and technology has given the man power fit to be the God yet he could not as by vagaries of his mind. lust for becoming almighty, he has put the world at the threshold of ruin. The science and technology has done wonders in inventions of warheads, nuclear and atomic weapons, space warships thus putting the entire world at ruinous peril. A switch can destroy the whole world. We had seen the devastation and destruction caused by the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and now there are more scientific more accurate warheads available that can destroy the whole world w it hour. The invention of chemical weapons has also jeopardized the whole civilization that may put the humanity in danger of incurable diseases.

The rap id progress i n genet ic engineering can make it possible to develop clone of human beings the disastrous effect of such invention can ruin every fabric of morality, ethics and the civilization.

The fast development in science and technology has put the balance of nature in great danger. The present day. Air, water and noise, pollution, the gradual global warming, has put the existence of world at stake . With rapid industrialization particularly in developed countries has resulted into imbalance in ratio of carbon-di oxide and oxygen in the environment. As per the report of Hadley Centre U.K.. by 2050 the trees and soils will start falling and perishing due to Global waning if no corrective measures are taken.

In pursuit of materialistic prosperity, we have been going for more and more unplanned industrialization that has resulted not only air pollution but also water pollution. Rivers, the natural source of pure and hygienic water, now become so much contaminated that even the water creatures, fish, tortoise, etc. are at the verge of extinction. Forest are decaying gradually. many species of wild animals have become a matter of past. Undoubtedly science and technology has given the man, much luxury, comfort, material prosperity, but wealth and prosperity is not the 'be- all and end -all'

of human life. Is there any material benefit more precious than life and material loss more awful than death. The worst curse of advancement in science and technology is that man has started feeling himself Almightily and ignoring the spiritual and human values. The man has lost his peace of mind. The inner satisfaction, the value of ethics in the realm of new and newer advancement in science and technology. What purpose all the material and physical prosperity serve if we have no peace of mind, no inner satisfaction? In brief, science and technology has brought both good and evil to the present world. No invention or technological advancement is itself bad or good. it is the user who turns it into blessings or curse. Machines are created for the luxury and comfort of man, if we use them to destroy others, they become curse, otherwise machines arc blessings It is the man, who has to ponder over the question what he wish to make the world a heaven or a hell, it is his decision which makes the science and technology a 'blessing' or a 'curse'.

ChatGPT Isn’t ‘Hallucinating’—It’s Bullshitting!

It’s important that we use accurate terminology when discussing how AI chatbots make up information

Right now artificial intelligence is everywhere. When you write a document, you’ll probably be asked whether you need your “AI assistant.” Open a PDF and you might be asked whether you want an AI to provide you with a summary. But if you have used ChatGPT or similar programs, you’re probably familiar with a certain problem— it makes stuff up , causing people to view things it says with suspicion.

It has become common to describe these errors as “ hallucinations .” But talking about ChatGPT this way is misleading and potentially damaging. Instead call it bullshit.

We don’t say this lightly. Among philosophers, “bullshit” has a specialist meaning , one popularized by the late American philosopher Harry Frankfurt . When someone bullshits, they’re not telling the truth, but they’re also not really lying. What characterizes the bullshitter, Frankfurt said, is that they just don’t care whether what they say is true. ChatGPT and its peers cannot care, and they are instead, in a technical sense, bullshit machines.

We can easily see why this is true and why it matters. Last year, for example, one lawyer found himself in hot water when he used ChatGPT in his research while writing a legal brief . Unfortunately, ChatGPT had included fictitious case citations. The cases it cited simply did not exist.

This isn’t rare or anomalous . To understand why, it’s worth thinking a bit about how these programs work . OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini chatbot and Meta’s Llama all work in structurally similar ways. At their core is an LLM—a large language model. These models all make predictions about language. Given some input, ChatGPT will make some prediction about what should come next or what is an appropriate response. It does so through an analysis of enormous amounts of text (its “training data”). In ChatGPT’s case, the initial training data included billions of pages of text from the Internet.

From those training data, the LLM predicts, from some text fragment or prompt, what should come next. It will arrive at a list of the most likely words (technically, linguistic tokens ) to come next, then select one of the leading candidates. Allowing for it not to choose the most likely word each time allows for more creative (and more human-sounding) language. The parameter that sets how much deviation is permitted is known as the “temperature.” Later in the process, human trainers refine predictions by judging whether the outputs constitute sensible speech. Extra restrictions may also be placed on the program to avoid problems (such as ChatGPT saying racist things ), but this token-by-token prediction is the idea that underlies all of this technology.

Now, we can see from this description that nothing about the modeling ensures that the outputs accurately depict anything in the world. There is not much reason to think that the outputs are connected to any sort of internal representation at all. A well-trained chatbot will produce humanlike text, but nothing about the process checks that the text is true, which is why we strongly doubt an LLM really understands what it says.

So sometimes ChatGPT says false things. In recent years, as we have been becoming accustomed to AI, people have started to refer to these falsehoods as “ AI hallucinations .” While this language is metaphorical, we think it’s not a good metaphor.

Consider Shakespeare’s paradigmatic hallucination in which Macbeth sees a dagger floating toward him. What’s going on here? Macbeth is trying to use his perceptual capacities in his normal way, but something has gone wrong. And his perceptual capacities are almost always reliable—he doesn’t usually see daggers randomly floating about! Normally his vision is useful in representing the world, and it is good at this because of its connection to the world.

Now think about ChatGPT. Whenever it says anything, it is simply trying to produce humanlike text. The goal is simply to make something that sounds good. This is never directly tied to the world. When it goes wrong, it isn’t because it hasn’t succeeded in representing the world this time; it never tries to represent the world! Calling its falsehoods “hallucinations” doesn’t capture this feature.

Instead we suggest, in a June report in Ethics and Information Technology , that a better term is “bullshit.” As mentioned, a bullshitter just doesn’t care whether what they say is true.

So if we do regard ChatGPT as engaging in a conversation with us—though even this might be a bit of a pretense —then it seems to fit the bill. As much as it intends to do anything, it intends to produce convincing humanlike text. It isn’t trying to say things about the world. It’s just bullshitting. And crucially, it’s bullshitting even when it says true things!

Why does this matter? Isn’t “hallucination” just a nice metaphor here? Does it really matter if it’s not apt? We think it does matter for at least three reasons:

First, the terminology we use affects public understanding of technology, which is important in itself. If we use misleading terms, people are more likely to misconstrue how the technology works. We think this in itself is a bad thing.

Second, how we describe technology affects our relationship with that technology and how we think about it. And this can be harmful. Consider people who have been lulled into a false of security by “self-driving” cars . We worry that talking of AI “hallucinating”—a term usually used for human psychology—risks anthropomorphizing the chatbots. The ELIZA effect (named after a chatbot from the 1960s) occurs when people attribute human features to computer programs. We saw this in extremis in the case of the Google employee who came to believe that one of the company’s chatbots was sentient . Describing ChatGPT as a bullshit machine (even if it’s a very impressive one) helps mitigate this risk.

Third, if we attribute agency to the programs, this may shift blame away from those using ChatGPT, or its programmers, when things go wrong. If, as appears to be the case, this kind of technology will increasingly be used in important matters such as health care , it is crucial that we know who is responsible when things go wrong.

So next time you see someone describing an AI making something up as a “hallucination,” call bullshit!

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jean Kang , a 31-year-old former senior program manager from San Francisco who's held roles at Meta, Pinterest, Intuit, and LinkedIn. It's been edited for length and clarity.

I recently left a role in Big Tech as a senior program manager at Figma, and I've previously worked at Meta , Pinterest, Intuit, and LinkedIn. I'm now a solopreneur coach and content creator.

During my corporate career, my income increased five times from a $35,000 salary to over $300,000 in total compensation, and I'm only in my early 30s.

I got my first role as a sales development rep for Intuit right after graduating in 2014. I knew I wanted to break into tech and was fortunate to land an offer at a big logo from the university career fair since I had internship and work experience during college.

Unfortunately, I was fired within a year for not hitting my sales quota.

In 2016, I pivoted to an account manager role

I more than doubled my salary at a tech startup in San Francisco. It took six months to find this role, but I kept going and leveraged my transferrable skills to land a job I could thrive in that wasn't sales.

I enjoyed this role because I could be more consultative and data-driven and less transactional. In 2017, I found out my mom had stage 4 cancer, and I chose to leave my job so I could be her primary caretaker .

After five months of unemployment, a recruiting agency contacted me

I was approached about a customer success role at Meta (then Facebook). I leaped at the opportunity to work for my dream company and became a contractor despite not having full-time benefits. I didn't care because I wanted to work there.

I knew this would be a great stepping stone even though I had a lower salary bump of $10,000, which brought me to $80,000. The experience was amazing, and I became close with my colleagues.

At the end of 2017, as my Facebook contract was nearing its end, I was relentless in getting converted to staff, but I was rejected. However, I had a colleague who referred me to her friend at Pinterest for a role as a client solutions manager. I was hired in less than two weeks.

My salary jumped to $90,000

I landed a total compensation of over $200,000, including sizable equity, at Pinterest, where I stayed for two years.

Next, I was interested in pivoting to a full-time program manager role, so I applied cold, interviewed, and landed an offer at LinkedIn . I increased my income by 49%, including Microsoft stock.

After two years, I was ready for my next play and landed my most recent job at Figma as a senior program manager after applying cold on LinkedIn. With this move, I received a 20% bump in base salary and a total comp of $300,000, including equity and a sign-on bonus.

Here are the four strategies that were the most helpful to me in increasing my salary in Big Tech.

1. I always came prepared with my walkaway point and potential pushback

In every negotiation conversation, I remembered that I would regret not asking for more, and the worst answer I could get was "no," so I pressed on.

My walkaway point is my base salary — if it was lower than what I wanted and they wouldn't move, I would walk away from the offer. I negotiated a lower sign-on bonus for a higher base salary in one offer.

2. I did a lot of research to come up with my target salary

I've had rigorous interviews for each program manager role and prepared intensely by always doing my research on LinkedIn, Blind, and Glassdoor.

Knowing my worth helped me stay composed and focused during the negotiations. I left a few offers while interviewing for my last role because of the pay, including opportunities from Salesforce and Cloudflare.

3. I put myself in the driver's seat before the recruiter asked me what I was looking for

I would take control of the negotiation by asking, "What's the salary band for this role?" I would move forward with the candidacy if I knew the salary range was higher than my baseline.

Don't wait for the recruiter to ask first. It's important to have your baseline salary defined before entering the conversation.

4. I wasn't afraid to negotiate other aspects of the offers

At Figma, I secured a $10,000 sign-on bonus on top of the initial offer by convincing my employer of my worth and what I was leaving on the table at LinkedIn.

I've seen friends and colleagues negotiate vacation time, work-from-home Fridays, and equity.

Looking back, job-hopping was the biggest blessing in disguise for my career and salary progression. I landed dream jobs and compensation by knowing my worth and advocating for myself each time.

Congratulations to Oriel’s Financial Economics alumnus Liam Corrigan (2021), who has just won gold for the USA in the men’s coxless four final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Three athletes from Oriel College are currently competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

They are alumnus Liam Corrigan, current student Charlie Elwes and incoming graduate Tom Mackintosh.

Corrigan, rowing for the USA’s men’s coxless four, will compete in the final on Thursday, 1 August, at 11:10 BST.

Mackintosh will participate in the men’s single sculls final on Saturday, 3 August, at 9:30 BST. Previously, he won gold as part of New Zealand’s men’s eight in Tokyo.

Elwes, aiming for his second Olympic medal, will row in Team GB’s men’s eight final on Saturday, 3 August, at 10:10 BST.

The announcements of track and field’s latest doping case or multiyear suspension arrived on an almost weekly basis this spring. A world champion . An Olympic medalist . And, most recently, three record-holders in a month .

The most immediate consequence, according to the official charged with pursuing doping violations in the sport, has been to create the impression that track has a serious doping problem, one perhaps much bigger than that of other sports in the Paris Olympics. The reality, he said, is that catching athletes who break the rules is the point.

“I would be much more concerned to be a fan of other sports that don’t have any doping cases,” said Brett Clothier, the Australian lawyer who leads the Athletics Integrity Unit, the body charged with catching track’s doping cheats. “Having no cases doesn’t mean no doping.”

To Mr. Clothier, then, a string of investigations and suspensions in a sport with a well-documented doping history is not a cause for concern but rather an inherent contradiction: To restore his sport’s reputation, he and his colleagues must first in the eyes of some besmirch it even more.

As a case involving positive tests for Chinese swimmers hangs over the Olympic pool , Mr. Clothier also has joined elite athletes and government investigators in publicly questioning whether the current global antidoping system can ever fully eradicate drug cheats. Each sport is left to arrange its own antidoping procedures.

• Can China smash the Airbus-Boeing duopoly?

It hopes to succeed where others have failed

E ach year Airbus and Boeing, the two halves of the global aircraft duopoly, face off at the world’s most prestigious airshow, which alternates between Paris and Farnborough, in the countryside close to London. This year’s event in Farnborough, which opened on July 22nd, was a more subdued clash than usual. Both firms announced some orders from airlines, but these were mostly small.

Boeing is still reeling from the consequences of a panel blowing off a 737 Max , its short-haul aircraft, in January. That model, which first flew in 2016, has been bedevilled with safety issues. The company has had to slow down production as regulators have investigated its safety procedures, enraging airlines whose deliveries have been delayed. Airbus, which had more planes on display at Farnborough than its chastened rival, has had troubles of its own. Snags in its supply chain have forced it to delay plans to ramp up deliveries of its short-haul jets. At current production rates it will take Airbus nearly 12 years to produce the 8,600 planes it has on its order books, and a similar time for Boeing to meet its 6,150 unfilled orders.

The backdrop is one of soaring demand. Boeing reckons that over the next 20 years the global fleet of passenger planes will need to double to meet the world’s growing appetite for flying, requiring 44,000 new aircraft. That is roughly twice as many planes as the duopoly managed to deliver in the past 20 years.

Could this open the door to aviation’s twosome becoming a threesome? Rob Morris of Cirium, a consultancy, thinks “it is more a case of when, rather than if”. Yet the barriers to becoming a maker of large passenger planes remain formidable.

It would cost Boeing and Airbus perhaps $20bn-30bn to develop a new plane. The expense would be even greater for any newcomer. They would need a decade or more to prepare designs, set up factories, establish a supply chain and obtain the blessing of regulators before any revenue rolled in. What they produce would need to match or beat the price and performance of the duopoly’s competing planes. They would then have to convince airlines, which benefit from lower costs when running a single-make fleet, to switch. And they would need to build the vast network of service technicians any customer would require before signing a cheque.

Embraer, a Brazilian aerospace firm, is rumoured to be contemplating a tilt at the duopoly. Its regional jets seat a maximum of around 145 passengers, compared with typically between 150 and 240 for Boeing’s 737 MAX and Airbus’s A320 family of short-haul planes. Few pundits dispute that it has the engineering prowess. Yet the experience of Bombardier, its one-time rival in regional jets, suggests that is not enough. The Canadian firm invested vast sums developing its CSeries jet, larger versions of which could compete with smaller versions of Airbus’s and Boeing’s short-haul planes. The financial strain this placed on the company, coupled with tariffs imposed by America after an anti-dumping complaint by Boeing, led it to sell the programme in 2017 to Airbus, which now markets the aircraft as the A220. Bombardier ceased making regional planes altogether in 2020, though it still makes business jets.

Taking on the duopoly from a standing start would be even riskier. After 15 years of soaring costs and technical snafus Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a Japanese industrial giant, called time last year on its project to develop SpaceJet, a small regional plane that would have been its country’s first homegrown passenger aircraft in decades. The MC -21, a much delayed narrowbody jet from Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation, is said to be too heavy and suffers from a shorter range and lower capacity than planned. While it may begin commercial service next year, and has a few hundred domestic orders, it is unlikely to do much flying outside Russian airspace.

Flight risk

China’s determination to become an aerospace superpower—and its willingness to throw fistfuls of yuan at the effort—presents the biggest threat to the duopoly. The Centre for Strategic and International Studies, an American think-tank, reckons that by 2020 China’s government had handed up to around $70bn in subsidies to COMAC , the country’s state-owned aerospace champion, to develop the C919, a narrowbody rival to the 737 MAX and A320 family. Conceived in 2006, it made its long delayed first flight in 2017. COMAC has now delivered six of the planes to customers, and has orders for over 1,000 more.

The C919’s range and capacity, however, fall short of the competition. Christian Scherer, boss of Airbus’s commercial-aircraft business, regards COMAC as a serious competitor, but points out that the C919 offers no new technology or features. Attracting international buyers will be tough. Outside its home market, only a startup in Brunei with Chinese backers has ordered the C919. Western aviation regulators will be wary of approving a new jet from a new manufacturer, and Western politicians could grumble about domestic airlines purchasing Chinese planes.

Even if COMAC meets its goal of making 150 C919s a year in five years’ time, which seems ambitious, it will remain a minnow. Cirium reckons 1,800 short-haul jets will be sold annually by then, meaning COMAC would account for less than a tenth of the total. Boeing still hopes it will ramp up production of its 737 Max to 50 a month by 2026. Airbus intends to be making 75 A320s a month by 2027.

That said, a slow climb does not mean COMAC will never reach altitude. Mr Morris of Cirium reckons that over the next 20 years it can capture 20-30% of a Chinese market for 6,000 short-haul planes. China’s domestic aerospace supply chain should also develop further. Only 14 of the 82 suppliers for the C919 are Chinese, and many of the most complex components come from America and Europe. But China’s government is endeavouring to change that. It is even said to be planning an attempt to break into the jet-engine business, taking on Western incumbents.

Airbus, too, was heavily dependent on government largesse when it first began making big jets (though it had the advantage of being formed out of a consortium of longstanding European aerospace firms with experience making planes). Its first passenger jet, the A300 it launched in 1969, was a commercial disappointment. But it laid the groundwork for planes that followed. COMAC may similarly learn from the C919. Though details are scant, it is now developing the C929, a model of which was on display at Farnborough. The long-haul plane would compete with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and Airbus’s A330. COMAC is also said to be developing the C939, which would take on the even larger Boeing 777 and Airbus A350. The incumbents should watch their tails. ■
