Boost your productivity with a voice recorder for your PC

If you’re the type of person who can speak faster than you can type, then you can appreciate the ability to dictate to your PC and turn your speech into text ¹ . Voice typing is built into Windows 11  and can help you in school, at work, and in your everyday life. Never miss a moment of a school lecture or a work meeting. Learn how to convert speech to text on a computer, and unlock new productivity methods.

How can I translate audio to text in Windows 11?

Windows 11 has built-in voice typing that can turn your spoken words into typed text. This feature can allow you to type as fast as you can talk, which can be helpful if you’re multitasking. Here’s how to turn on voice typing so you can start dictating:

  • To turn on voice typing in Windows 11, press Windows key + H on your PC’s hardware keyboard. If your device has a touch keyboard, press the microphone key , next to the spacebar.
  • Once voice typing is turned on, your computer will automatically start listening. Wait for the “listening” alert before you start speaking, so that you don’t have to repeat yourself, or risk any important thoughts being missed.
  • When you’re ready to stop voice typing, you have two options: say “Stop listening” or tap the microphone button on the voice typing menu.

To access the voice typing menu, press Windows keys + Alt + H. From here, you’ll be able to navigate through the options. There’s also a list of helpful phrases and punctuation  to make your dictation experience easier and more effective.

If you’re looking to record directly from your computer for future listening, Windows 11 has two options:

Sound Recorder

Sound Recorder  allows you to record exclusive audio and change playback speed. It can be helpful if you’re practicing a speech, learning a foreign language, or just want to brainstorm.

To use Sound Recorder, you can start the recording process by pressing Control + R or the red button. Once you’ve started recording, this button will become a pause button, so you can stop and start recording as needed. To stop recording, press the button with the black square. The recording will automatically show up on the left side of your screen and can be renamed or shared by right clicking on the file.

Xbox Game Bar

Xbox Game Bar  is great for recording internal audio in Windows 11. The process for capturing audio is very similar to recording your screen:

  • Enable the Game Bar by pressing Windows + G.
  • Press Capture and then select Mic to enable voice recording.
  • Click Start recording in the Capture pane to start and then press the Recording button to stop.

While the Xbox Game Bar can record ambient sound, it is aimed at capturing gameplay and will end up recording whatever is on your screen at the time. If you’re creating a how-to video for a game, this is the perfect solution. However, if you are recording a podcast episode or a speech, you may not want the screen capture aspect, making Sound Recorder a better option.

How can a PC voice recorder improve productivity?

Here's how voice recording software can help you with your everyday:

  • Meetings: not only will you never forget an idea during an important meeting, but you can also help keep people on track. With speech-to-text dictation, you can refer to talking points for reference without having to look through messy notes.
  • Interviews: if you’re interviewing a candidate, recording the process can help you remember every aspect of an interview round. Likewise, if you’re pursuing a new position, using this software may be helpful to practice what you’re going to say when you’re asked to talk about yourself.
  • Lectures: for students who are auditory listeners, making a recording of a lecture can help them retain information and perform better on exams.
  • Speed: you can always talk faster than you can type, which makes dictation software an attractive option. There’s certainly a learning curve, especially in regard to speaking punctuation aloud, but if you’re not quick with a keyboard, this can really boost your productivity.
  • Multitasking: any efficiency hack is usually a good one. Voice recording and dictation software can keep you from forgetting important thoughts, allowing you to save important information in the moment.

Computer voice recording technology from Windows is helping people write their novels, learn foreign languages, capture their children’s first words, and be more productive and efficient. See how these and other Windows 11 features  can help you today.

Windows 10 has a plethora of apps that can be used on a laptop or desktop and one of the most convenient and helpful is the Voice Recorder. This app allows the user to record audio for just about any reason, making it a great all-round option for those looking for a way to record themselves.

Voice Recorder is easy to use and  comes with other features , such as trimming, sharing audio files, and organizing. If a laptop or PC is running Windows 10, then the user already has access to Voice Recorder as it comes pre-installed. While there are tons of audio recording apps out there, Windows 10’s Voice Recorder is likely to be enough for many users looking for a quick and easy recording solution.

One of the most notable factors about the Voice Recorder app is that it’s 100-percent user-friendly. A microphone is all that's needed, and with almost all laptops and PCs now coming with a built-in microphone, this is not going to be an issue. Of course, there are also benefits to using an external microphone, including better quality audio recordings overall. Here's how to find the Voice Recorder app in Windows 10, as well as brief explanation on how to make use of the main features.

How To Use The Voice Recorder App

Windows 10 recording

Before you begin recording, make sure that the microphone is working properly or if it’s an external microphone, that it’s connected. Open the app by pressing the Windows key  and searching for “Voice Recorder.” Once open, click the record button (microphone icon) to begin recording. Users can also add a marker to any part of the recording by highlighting and clicking the flag icon. To pause a recording session without ending it, click the pause button, and once the recording is finished, click the stop button.

To listen to the recording afterwards, while the app is still open simply click the play button and start listening. Otherwise, open the app again and select the recording from the recordings list shown on the left-side of the app .  To trim your recording, click the trim button (second icon from the left at the bottom), and drag the pins to mark the parts to be trimmed, then hit save. It's also worth renaming individual recordings to make it easier to identify them at a later time. To rename one, open the recording and click on the rename button (last icon at the bottom) and a pop-up window will open allowing the user to change the name of the file.

In most cases, making recordings shouldn't be an issue. However, the Voice Recorder might not work if the microphone settings are not configured correctly to allow access. If this happens, simply go to the app's settings, find the "Allow access to the microphone on this device" option at the top and click the "Change" button to grant permission. Overall, Voice Recorder is an easy option for Windows 10 laptop and PC users to record audio.

NOTE: The screenshots and the instructions in this guide apply to Windows 10 May 2019 update or newer . If you do not know what version of Windows 10 you have, read: How to check the Windows 10 version, OS build, edition, or type .

One way to access the Voice Recorder is to start typing the app's name in the Windows 10 search box and then click or tap the relevant result.

Search for the Voice Recorder app

Another way is by finding the app in the list of apps from the Start Menu and then clicking or tapping on it.

Find the Voice Recorder in the Start Menu

The Voice Recorder app opens, and, if this is the first time you access it and there are no previous recordings saved, it asks for permission to access your microphone. Obviously, this permission should be given, otherwise the app does not work.

Voice Recorder wants to access your microphone

Click or tap the Record button or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + R to start your recording.

The Record button in Voice Recorder

The app starts recording, displaying the time elapsed since the audio recording started.

The Voice Recorder displays the time elapsed since the start of a recording

Click or tap the Pause button to pause the recording at any time, without ending the current recording session.

Press Pause if you want to stop recording for a short time

Clicking or tapping the Pause button one more time causes the app to resume the recording. When you are done recording, click or tap the Stop recording button in the center of the window, or press one of the following keys on your keyboard: Esc , Enter , Spacebar , or BackSpace .

Stop the recording session by clicking the Stop button

The recording session ends and, especially when it comes to long audio recordings, you are notified that it is being saved. Keep in mind that the limit for a recording is 2hours 59 minutes and 59 seconds, according to our tests.

Wait while your recording is being saved

Your audio recording is saved under the default name Recording . The date and time when the recording was saved are displayed underneath, followed by the duration of the recording. Once you have at least one recording saved in Voice Recorder , the Record button is displayed in the lower-left corner of the window, and you can press it at any time to start a new recording.

Stopping a recording saves it

If the Voice Recorder is closed before saving the recording, you get a notification , letting you know that your recording is paused.

A notification lets you know your recording is paused

This is not entirely accurate, as your recording is actually saved under the name Recording (autosaved) and it can not be resumed.

Your recording is autosaved when the Voice Recorder closes

In this specific case, any markers added to the recording are gone, same as the option to add a marker.

All your recording sessions are saved in a list in the Voice Recorder app under the default name Recording , the most recent being at the top. To make things less confusing for users, subsequent recordings display a number in brackets, and the list is divided by days.

Recordings are sorted by the day they were created

If you use the Voice Recorder a lot, scrolling through the list of recordings to find the one you want can become tiresome. Clicking or tapping the day subcategory displayed in the Voice Recorder takes you to a new window, where you can choose any of the days when recordings have been made.

Press a day for a complete list of the days recordings were created

Click or tap the day that interests you from the list.

Choose the day you made the recording you are looking for

This returns you to the initial list, where the recordings from that day come into focus.

Choosing the day of a recording scrolls you to that section of the recording list

To listen to a recording, select it from the list and either click or tap on it again or press Play .

Press Play to listen to a recording

Press the Pause button to pause the recording at any time. To toggle between playing and pausing a recording, you can also click or tap on its name in the list, or use the Enter or Spacebar keys on your keyboard.

Markers let you "bookmark" important parts of a recording, making them easy to identify and access afterwards. You can use them to mark portions of a recording or to highlight key moments, and they come in handy, especially when it comes to long recording sessions. A marker does not alter or interrupt the recording in any way. While you are recording, the flag icon displayed next to the Pause button allows you to "Add a marker" inside your recording. To add a marker, click or tap the "Add a marker" button or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + M .

Add markers inside your recording while it is being created

The marker is shown at the bottom of the window, next to a flag icon, and it displays the time elapsed since the recording started.

The marker is displayed at the bottom of the window

You can add as many markers as you want while recording. You can also add markers while playing a previously saved recording, by pressing the "Add a marker" button.

Add markers while playing a recording

When you play a recording, all the markers for that recording (whether you added them doing the making of the recording or while listening to it) are displayed both in the upper right portion of the window, under the name and details of the recording, and in the play bar. Clicking or tapping a marker allows you to quickly jump to underlined moments.

Click on a marker in the recording to jump to that part of the recording

To remove a marker, right-click or press-and-hold on it, and then click or tap the only available option: "Delete this marker . "

Delete this marker removes the marker

The Voice Recorder allows you to trim a recording, and only keep the relevant part(s) from it.

To do that, select the Recording from the list and then click or tap the Trim button at the bottom of the window.

Press Trim to edit your recording

This causes two pins to appear on the play bar, named "Start of trimmed section" and "End of trimmed section . " Drag them around to select the part of your recording you want to keep.

Use the pins on the play bar to trim your recording

You can press the Play button at any time while trimming to make sure your selection is accurate. When you have made your decision, click or tap Save at the bottom of the window.

Press Save when you are done editing a recording

You now have two options: "Update original" or "Save a copy . " If you choose to "Update original , " the recording is replaced by the new version, while "Save a copy" creates a new recording in the list.

Choose how to save your trimmed recording

If you change your mind, use the Cancel button (marked with an X) at any point during the trimming process or select another recording from the list to cancel editing the recording.

Having all the files in Voice Recorder named Recording can be inconvenient, so the option to rename them is a welcome addition. The easiest way to do this is by selecting the recording you want to rename and then clicking or tapping the Rename button at the bottom of the window.

Press the Rename button to choose a new name for your recording

In the pop-up window that appears, insert the desired name for your recording, and click or tap Rename .

Choose a new name and press Rename

You can also rename a recording by right-clicking or pressing-and-holding it and then choosing Rename from its contextual menu.

Choose Rename from a recording's contextual menu

The pop-up window appears, and you can insert the name of your choice for the recording and click or tap Rename .

Insert a new name for your recording

Your recording's new name is instantly displayed.

Once you are happy with your recording, the Voice Recorder gives you the option to share it with others. Select the recording you want to share and click or tap the Share button at the bottom of the window.

The Share button lets you share you recording

What to Know

  • Search Windows for recorder to open the built-in sound recording utility.
  • Or, install the free program Audacity to record audio.
  • Press the record button in either program to start a new recording.

In this article, we'll show you how to record audio on a Windows computer. Two methods are covered, depending on the features you want.

How to Use the Built-in Sound Recorder on Windows

The first method uses Windows' built-in program, called Sound Recorder in Windows 11 and Voice Recorder in other versions. You can access this tool from the Start menu.

Open the Start menu and search for recorder . Choose Sound Recorder if you're on Windows 11, or Voice Recorder if that's what you see.

Press the red record button or blue microphone , depending on your Windows version. If you're on Windows 11, you can also choose which device to record from by using the menu on the bottom left.

Press the same button again to stop the recording. There's also a pause button if you need to temporarily stop the recording without completely ending it.

Your audio recordings appear on the sidebar on the left. All sound recordings are stored in the folder below as an M4A file. To get to the file, right-click the saved recording from within the program and choose Show in folder or Open file location .

Open the app's settings to change the output format. Options include MP3, WAV, WMA, and others.

Use Audacity to Record Sound on Windows

If you need a different method, you can use an audio recording program such as Audacity. Apps like this one are useful because they provide heaps of additional features not found in the Windows sound recorder, such as background noise removal and the ability to record audio coming from your computer.

Record From the Mic

Follow these steps to use Audacity to record audio coming into the computer from your microphone.

Download Audacity and install it to your computer.

Open the program and go to Audio Setup > Recording Device , then select the correct device you want to use to record sound. It might already be chosen.

Click the red record button and begin recording sound.

Record System Sounds

You can also use Audacity to record audio coming from your computer instead of from your mic.

Open the Audio Setup menu item, then choose Host > Windows WASAPI .

Return to the Audio Setup menu, but now choose Recording Device and select your speakers or headphones. Pick the one that says loopback at the end.

Select the record button to start recording audio from your computer.

Any program that can capture your screen, such as VLC or QuickTime , can also record sound from your built-in microphone; just look for audio settings while you're setting up the recording. To record the audio from the computer, however, you'll need to look for another app. Before you download anything to your computer, make sure it's coming from a reputable source.

MacOS has several ways to record audio that come included. The simplest one is QuickTime; open the app, and then go to File > New Audio Recording , or press Command + Shift + N on your keyboard. Audacity also has a Mac version, so you can use the above instructions there, too.

Knowing how to record computer audio will always be greatly helpful, especially when you want to record podcasts, interviews, streaming music, audio calls, and more. This post will discuss some excellent computer audio recorders and provide step-by-step guides for recording sound on a computer. Additionally, you will explore some tips for sound recording here. Without further ado, let’s get started now!

Method 1. How to perfectly record audio from computer system and microphone

  • Compatibility: Windows 7/8/8.1/10/11 & macOS 10.13 and later
  • Operation difficulty: Easy
  • Best for: Both novices and professionals deal with multiple audio source recording and editing on PC and Mac

EaseUS RecExperts is an ideal tool to record audio from your computer, including the system sound, speaker, external audio from microphones, or all simultaneously. That means you are free to record streaming songs, your own vocals, or speeches easily. Besides, it offers a special silent recording mode that can start recording sound on your PC while it’s in silent mode, which is best for someone who works or studies in a relatively quiet place.

In addition, it also provides other tools to help improve your recording experience and guarantee audio recording quality:

  • Adjust the volume of your recording at any time during the recording
  • Provide an AI noise remover to reduce and even eliminate the background noise
  • Save your audio recordings to MP3, OGG, WMA, and other audio files

Here is how to use EaseUS RecExperts to record sound from a computer:

  • Compatibility: Windows 7/8/8.1/10/11
  • Operation difficulty: ⭐
  • Best for: Users who only want to do simple sound recording tasks without editing needs, like recording singing, vocals, and more

For users who want to record audio files on Windows 10 or 11 without installing any third-party software, the Windows Voice Recorder (now called Windows Sound Recorder in Windows 11 OS) is a great option. This freeware lets you capture sound on your computer within 3 simple steps, and it’s regarded as one of the easiest solutions for recording yourself singing, talking, taking voice messages, etc.

If you are working in OneNote and need to capture audio, you can directly record computer audio via OneNote to save time.

Here are the steps to record sound on a computer on Windows 10 with Windows Sound Recorder:

Step 1. Open the Start menu and enter Voice Recorder in the search box to open it.

Step 2. Next, click the blue microphone in the center to start your voice recording.

Note: For Windows 11 users, you need to hit the red button or use Ctrl + R to begin your audio recording.

Step 3. To end your recording, click Stop. Once done, you can find the recordings saved in MP3 on your computer.

Method 3. How to flexibly record on Windows 7 and earlier

  • Operation difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐
  • Best for: Windows users who need to record music and songs on an older computer, like Windows Vista, XP, etc.

Another way to record your favorite songs and music from a computer is to use the Stereo Mix, which is a special computer audio recorder provided by your sound drivers. If your sound driver contains this tool, you are able to use it to capture all sound coming from your computer, including the system sound, microphone audio, game audio, and more.

To capture sound on a Windows PC using Stereo Mix, you need to know some basic settings in the Windows system first, which will take about 20 to 30 minutes.

Here is the tutorial for capturing audio on a Windows computer:

Step 1. Open the Control panel, then click Hardware and Sound > Sound.

Step 2. Next, in the window that appears, choose the Recording tab, where you can find the Stereo mix button.

Method 4. How to record audio on computer for free via Audacity

  • Compatibility: Windows & Mac & Linux
  • Best for: Users who want to record and edit audio professionally for producing songs, podcasts, and more for free.

If you prefer a free and professional tool to record computer audio, take a look at Audacity. As one of the most popular audio capture software , it is widely used for any purpose of sound recording, including recording vocals, creating songs, capturing voice calls, and others.

This freeware functions in capturing system audio, recording multiple tracks at once, applying filters to recordings, and more. That means you are able to record and edit your audio files at once and then export them to MP3 or other formats. If you just use this freeware for basic audio or vocal recording, you can start the task once you open it. However, to create high-quality music files, you need to take time to learn the advanced settings and install the necessary plugins.

Here is how to record internal and external sound from a computer using Audacity:

Step 1. Download and install Audacity on your computer, then open it.

Step 2. Click the Audio Setup option in the top toolbar and click Host > Windows WASAPI.

Method 5. How to record computer audio on Mac free with OBS

  • Compatibility: Windows & macOS & Linux
  • Operation difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Best for: Advanced users who want to do audio recording and streaming on various platforms

OBS Studio is another completely free tool that can help you capture sound coming from your PC, Mac, or Linux. This software enables you to flexibly choose your target audio sources, like the system sound, capture card sound, microphone sound, and more. Besides, it provides options for adjusting audio bitrate, sample rate, and channels for those professional music creators who want to create fantastic songs here. Similar to Audacity, this freeware also allows you to install plugins if needed.

However, it is a little difficult to use this free audio recorder because of its complicated UI. According to our teams’ testing statistics, a beginner needs a long learning curve (3 – 4 hours for basic settings and functions) to handle this tool.

Now, let’s see how it works for recording computer audio on Mac and Windows:

Step 1. Install and launch OBS Studio on your PC or Mac.

Step 2. Next, in the window’s upper-left, click File > Settings > Audio to set your audio device input. Besides, click Output to select the audio format for your recordings.

EaseUS Obs 1

Step 3. This freeware simultaneously records the visible screen and audio by default. To record computer audio only, you need to check the eye symbol to disable the visual capture.

Step 4. When everything is ready, click Start Recording to begin capturing PC audio now.

EaseUS Obs 2

Method 6. How to directly start recording computer audio online

  • Compatibility: web-based (Windows & macOS & Linux)
  • Best for: Windows and Mac users who want to record songs and voice on computer audio directly without any app.

For those who want to record computer audio on a PC or Mac without any app, Chrome Audio Capture should be the first choice.

Veed is a great piece of browser software with the best team I've ever seen. Transcribe your recordings

Note:  This feature is currently only available in Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows.

The transcribe feature converts speech to a text transcript with each speaker individually separated. After your conversation, interview, or meeting, you can revisit parts of the recording by playing back the timestamped audio and edit the transcription to make corrections. You can save the full transcript as a Word document or insert snippets of it into existing documents.

You can transcribe speech in two ways:

Record directly in Word

Upload an audio file

Record in word.

You can record directly in Word while taking notes in the canvas and then transcribe the recording.  Word transcribes in the background as you record; you won't see text on the page as you would when dictating. You'll see the transcript after you save and transcribe the recording.

Go to  Home  >  Dictate  > Transcribe .

Image showing the Dictate dropdown and the Transcribe selection.

Be careful to set the correct microphone input on your device, otherwise results may be disappointing. For example, if your computer's microphone input is set to your headset mic based on the last time you used it, it won't work well for picking up an in-person meeting. You can change which microphone is used in Windows sound settings.

If you want to record and transcribe a virtual call, don't use your headset. That way, the recording can pick up the sound coming out of your device.

Wait for the pause icon to be outlined in blue and the timestamp to start incrementing to let you know that recording has begun.

Start talking or begin a conversation with another person. Speak clearly.

Leave the Transcribe pane open while recording.

The recording inferface with a recording time incrementing, a pause button in the middle, and a Save and transcribe button at the bottom.

When finished, select Save and transcribe now  to save your recording to OneDrive and start the transcription process.

Transcription may take a while depending on your internet speed. Keep the Transcribe  pane open while the transcription is being made. Feel free to do other work or switch browser tabs or applications and come back later.

Note:  The recordings will be stored in the Transcribed Files folder on OneDrive. You can delete them there. Learn more about privacy at Microsoft.

You can upload a pre-recorded audio file and then transcribe the recording.

Go to  Home  >  Dictate dropdown > Transcribe .

Select Upload audio

Choose an audio file from the file picker. Transcribe currently supports .wav, .mp4, .m4a, .mp3 formats.

Transcription may take a while depending on your internet speed, up to about the length of the audio file. Be sure to keep the Transcribe  pane open while the transcription is happening, but feel free to do other work or switch browser tabs or applications and come back later.

Note:  Recordings are stored in the Transcribed Files folder on OneDrive. You can delete them there. Learn more about privacy at Microsoft.

Note:  Users with a Microsoft 365 subscription can transcribe a maximum of 300 minutes of uploaded audio per month.

Interact with the transcript

Your transcript is associated with the document it’s attached to until you remove it. If you close and reopen the pane or close and reopen the document, the transcript remains saved with the document.

You can interact with the transcript in a few different ways.

Access the audio file

Change the playback speed up to 2x .

Relabel a speaker or edit a section

The transcription service identifies and separates different speakers and labels them "Speaker 1," "Speaker 2," etc. You can edit the speaker label and change all occurrences of it to something else. You can also edit the content of a section to correct any issues in transcription.

In the Transcribe pane, hover over a section you want to edit.

Select Edit transcript section

Add a transcript to the document

Unlike Dictate, Transcribe doesn't automatically add the audio to the document. Instead, from the Transcribe pane, you can add the entire transcript, or specific sections of it, to the document.

Select Add section to document

To delete the transcript or create a new one, select New transcription . You can only store one transcript per document; if you create a new transcript for the document, the current transcript will be deleted. However, any transcript sections you've added to the document remain in the document, but not in the Transcribe pane.

The person that you shared both the Word document and audio file with will be able to open the Word document, open the  Transcribe  pane, and interact with both the transcript and audio file.

Your browser does not support video. Install Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash Player, or Internet Explorer 9.

Make sure you’re signed into Microsoft 365, using the new Microsoft Edge or Chrome.

If it’s your first time to transcribe, give the browser permission to use your mic. There might be a dialog that pops up in the browser or you may have to go to the browser settings.

This wikiHow teaches you how to record Text-to-Speech on a Windows or Mac computer. Text-to-speech software converts text to computerized spoken dialogue, but recording it can be a hassle. Luckily there are a variety of free online text-to-speech services that can turn your written text into an audio file which you can download directly! If you require greater Text to Speech (TTS) customization, you'll need to use a more professional TTS program. [1] X Research source

Using From Text To Speech Online

Step 1 Go to http://www.fromtexttospeech.com...

  • You can copy text from any source or type the text directly into the text box.

Step 3 Paste the text in the blue box.

  • You can type or paste up to 50,000 characters in the text box.

Step 4 Select a language.

  • Changing the language will not translate your written text—this only changes the way the words are pronounced according to each language.

Step 5 Select a voice.

  • On a Mac using Safari, click the download link while holding the Control key and select "Download Linked File."

Using Text To MP3 Online

Step 1 Go to https://www.texttomp3.online...

  • Make sure you select the language that matches your written text because changing the language will not translate the text, only change the pronunciation.

Step 6 Add background music (optional).

  • Allow a few minutes for the file to generate.

Step 8 Click the play button to preview the audio file.

  • By default, downloads are stored in the "Downloads" folder on both Windows and Mac computers.

'God on my side': Donald Trump accepts nomination, recalls shooting in RNC speech: Watch

record a speech on my computer

Donald Trump formally accepted the Republican party's nomination for President Thursday as the closing act of the Republican National Convention .

Even before the convention speeches got underway in Milwaukee on Monday, Trump had a dramatic week. He survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday and announced Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate Monday afternoon. Thursday, he accepted the nomination as his presumptive opponent President Joe Biden is battling COVID and mounting calls to step out of the 2024 race.

In his acceptance speech, he recounted the moment he was hit in the ear with a bullet at the rally where one attendee died and two others were injured. Trump said he felt safe because he felt he had "God on my side." Many speakers throughout the convention expressed their gratitude that Trump survived.

His speech lasted more than an hour. After a moment of silence for the deceased victim and a call for unity, Trump thanked the other speakers of the evening, touted his own record, continued an unsubstantiated claim he lost the 2020 election due to cheating, and teased policy promises for a potential second term.

Watch Trump's speech at the 2024 RNC here

USA TODAY had over 60 reporters on the ground in Milwaukee and you can see all the highlights from the final night of the convention in our live blog.

RNC 2024 live updates: Donald Trump set to formally accept Republican nomination

What to know about Donald Trump

  • Who is he: 45th President of the United States
  • What role does he play: Republican candidate for President of the United States
  • Key quotes: "I stand before you this evening with a message of confidence, strength, and hope. Four months from now, we will have an incredible victory, and we will begin the four greatest years in the history of our country." "If you took the 10 worst presidents in the history of the United States, think of it, the 10 worst, added them up they will not have done the damage that Biden has done," Trump said. "The damage that he's done to this country is unthinkable. It's unthinkable. Together we will restore vision, strength, competence, and we're going to have a thing called common sense making most of our decisions."

When and where is the Republican National Convention?

The Republicans' convention took place over four days, from July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The  Fiserv Forum ,  home of the Milwaukee Bucks , was the  main venue  for the RNC. There were  also events  at the nearby University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panther Arena and the Baird Center.

How can you watch the event and stay up-to-date on convention news?

WATCH: Trump speaks at National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Donald Trump falsely suggested Kamala Harris had misled voters about her race as the former president appeared before the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago Wednesday in an interview that quickly turned hostile.

Watch the event in the player above.

The Republican former president wrongly claimed that Harris, the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as vice president, had in the past only promoted her Indian heritage.

“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump said while addressing the group’s annual convention.

Live fact check: Trump at the National Association of Black Journalists conference

Harris is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, both immigrants to the U.S. As an undergraduate, Harris attended Howard University, one of the nation’s most prominent historically Black colleges and universities, where she also pledged the historically Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. As a U.S. senator, Harris was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, supporting her colleagues’ legislation to strengthen voting rights and reforming policing.

Trump has leveled a wide range of criticism at Harris since she replaced President Joe Biden atop the likely Democratic ticket last week. Throughout his political career, the former president has repeatedly questioned the backgrounds of opponents who are racial minorities.

Michael Tyler, the communications director for Harris’ campaign, said in a statement that “the hostility Donald Trump showed on stage today is the same hostility he has shown throughout his life, throughout his term in office, and throughout his campaign for president as he seeks to regain power.”

“Trump lobbed personal attacks and insults at Black journalists the same way he did throughout his presidency — while he failed Black families and left the entire country digging out of the ditch he left us in,” Tyler said. “Donald Trump has already proven he cannot unite America, so he attempts to divide us.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked during her briefing with reporters on Wednesday about Trump’s remarks and responded with disbelief, initially murmuring, “Wow.”

Jean-Pierre, who is Black, called what Trump said “repulsive” and said, “It’s insulting and no one has any right to tell someone who they are how they identify.”

Trump has repeatedly attacked his opponents and critics on the basis of race. He rose to prominence in Republican politics by propagating false theories that President Barack Obama, the nation’s first Black president, was not born in the United States. “Birtherism,” as it became known, was just the start of Trump’s history of questioning the credentials and qualifications of Black politicians.

He has denied allegations of racism. And after Biden picked Harris as his running mate four years ago, a Trump campaign spokesperson then pointed to a previous Trump political donation to Harris as proof that he wasn’t racist.

“The president, as a private businessman, donated to candidates across all aisles,” the spokesperson, Katrina Pierson, told reporters. “And I’ll note that Kamala Harris is a Black woman and he donated to her campaign, so I hope we can squash this racism argument now,” Pierson said.

During this year’s Republican primary, he once referred to former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, the daughter of Indian immigrants, as “Nimbra.”

Later Wednesday, Trump did not repeat his criticism of Harris’ race at a campaign rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, although he called her “phony” and said she has been trying to change her image. He also repeatedly mispronounced her first name.

“If she becomes your president, our country is finished,” Trump charged.

Before he took the stage, Trump’s team displayed what appeared to be years-old news headlines describing Harris as the “first Indian-American senator” on the big screen in the arena.

Trump’s appearance Wednesday at the annual gathering of Black journalists immediately became heated, with the former president sparring with interviewer Rachel Scott of ABC News and accusing her of giving him a “very rude introduction” with a tough first question about his past criticism of Black people and Black journalists, his attack on Black prosecutors who have pursued cases against him and the dinner he had at his Florida club with a white supremacist.

“I think it’s disgraceful,” Trump said. “I came here in good spirit. I love the Black population of this country. I’ve done so much for the Black population of this country.”

Trump continued his attacks on Scott’s network, ABC News, which he has been arguing should not host the next presidential debate, despite his earlier agreement with the Biden campaign. He also several times described her tone and questions as “nasty,” a word he used in the past when describing women, including Hillary Clinton and Meghan the Duchess of Sussex.

The Republican also repeated his false claim that immigrants in the country illegally are “taking Black jobs.” When pushed by Scott on what constituted a “Black job,” Trump responded by saying “a Black job is anybody that has a job,” drawing groans from the room.

At one point, he said, “I have been the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln.”

The audience responded with a mix of boos and some applause.

Scott asked Trump about his pledge to pardon people convicted for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol and specifically whether he would pardon those who assaulted police officers.

Trump said, “Oh, absolutely I would,” and said, “If they’re innocent, I would pardon them.”

Scott pointed out they have been convicted and therefore are not innocent.

“Well, they were convicted by a very, very tough system,” he said.

At one point, when he was defending his supporters who entered the Capitol on Jan. 6, he said, “Nothing is perfect in life.”

He compared the 2021 insurrection to the protests in Minneapolis and other cities in 2020 following the death of George Floyd by Minneapolis police and to more recent protests at the Capitol last week by demonstrators opposed to the war in Gaza. Trump falsely claiming that no one was arrested in those other demonstrations and that only his supporters were targeted.

As Trump made the comparison, a man in the back of the room shouted out: “Sir, have you no shame?”

The former president’s invitation to address the organization sparked an intense internal debate among NABJ that spilled online. Organizations for journalists of color typically invite presidential candidates to speak at their summer gatherings in election years.

As he campaigns for the White House a third time, Trump has sought to appear outside his traditional strongholds of support and his campaign has touted his efforts to try to win over Black Americans, who have been Democrats’ most committed voting bloc.

His campaign has emphasized his messages on the economy and immigration as part of his appeal, but some of his outreach has played on racial stereotypes, including the suggestion that African Americans would empathize with the criminal charges he has faced and his promotion of branded sneakers.

Trump and NABJ also have a tense history over his treatment of Black women journalists. In 2018, NABJ condemned Trump for repeatedly using words such as “stupid,” “loser” and “nasty” to describe Black women journalists.

The vice president is not scheduled to appear at the convention, but NABJ said in a statement posted on X that it was in conversation with her campaign to have her appear either virtually or in person for a conversation in September.

Harris addressed Trump’s comments briefly Wednesday night while speaking in Houston at a gathering of Sigma Gamma Rho, a historically Black sorority in Houston.

“It was the same old show,” she said. “The divisiveness and the disrespect.”

Harris added: “And let me just say, the American people deserve better.”

— Matt Brown and Michelle L. Price, Associated Press

Price reported from New York. Associated Press writers Aaron Morrison and Steve Peoples in New York, Gary Fields in Chicago and Will Weissert and Farnoush Amiri in Washington, Marc Levy in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Chris Megerian in Houston contributed to this report.
