Your personal statement

The purpose of a personal statement is to showcase your relevant skills and experience against the job requirements.  The statement is your opportunity to give examples of how you fit the requirements of the job.  When writing a personal statement it is important that you:

  • Read the job specification so you are clear about the job requirements.
  • Outline the skills and experience that you have that are relevant to the job and use examples to help demonstrate this.   Wherever possible include specific facts and figures that demonstrate the tangible results of your work.
  • Keep to the word limit. If your statement is too brief it will not provide the required depth of detail and evidence to be assessed fully. 
  • Proofread your statement before submitting it to make sure it is clear, easy to read and relevant.

A guide to personal statements for public and civil service jobs: how to sell yourself, both on application forms and in person

Recruiting managers may have to sift through hundreds or even thousands of applications, while i nterviewers are likely to be meeting multiple candidates. So how do you ensure you stand out from the crowd? Writing a short but perfectly formed personal statement or selling yourself at interview in just a few well-chosen words could make all the difference. Danielle Littlejohn tells you how    

A personal statement is a summary of what you offer an employer whether you’re a school leaver, graduate, or an established career mover. By condensing your experience and skills into a few sentences, the aim is to highlight what sets you apart from others whether you are applying for a new role and writing a personal statement to go with your CV, or relaying your experience during an interview or more relaxed meeting. These days we need to be able to promote our professional worth in just one or two minutes.  

Be it a written or verbal personal statement, recruiting managers and interviewers are looking for a short, sharp clarification of who you are, what makes you stand out, and what makes you the best person for the job.  

Not everyone knows the term ‘elevator pitch’ but I have always quite liked the analogy. If you found yourself in a lift with the employer of your dreams and had only the time it takes to travel a few floors, how would you sell yourself? Ideally, you should incorporate your personal values, and unique selling point (USP), as well as skills and experience. It can be the clincher in an employer’s mind as to your organisational fit so it can be the perfect thing to say at the beginning of the interview when you are asked: “So tell me a little about yourself”.

These days, our careers and their progression can be quite fluid. When you’re looking to move forward, it’s advisable to hone your skillsets and have clear aspirations of where you want them to take you. To paraphrase the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, when she finds herself lost in the woods and asks directions: “If you don’t know where you are going, how are you going to know when you get there?”

How to structure a written personal statement

Lucy Ventrice, senior HR business partner at Amazon, suggests you start by creating a ‘mind map’ of both yourself and one of your potential employers. By comparing the two, you will have something to build from and an idea of what they are looking for, enabling you to make the application bespoke.

In the opening sentence, you want to grab the reader so it should include your job title, number of years’ experience, expertise, and some positive or active ‘hook’ words. Your personal statement will obviously vary according to where you are in your career. If you have achievements that are relevant to the employer, it’s an idea to mention these briefly. It’s a good idea to give an idea of what you’re looking for in the closing sentence, for example, specific goals and why you would like to work for that employer.

Beyond that we want to keep the personal statement as concise as possible without jargon or repetition and with a real focus on grammar and spelling.

Pinning down your elevator pitch face-to-face

In the same way as written personal statements, an elevator pitch should be a quick synopsis of your background and experience but, as it is generally delivered face-to-face, it should be more relaxed and affords us the opportunity to inject a little more personality into it.

It is great to have something up your sleeve for job fairs, networking events and other professional activities as it sounds corporate, explains you in the terms they are after, and gives you a head start on something to say about yourself rather than getting tongue-tied.

As this is verbal, we need to think about our delivery and particularly not speaking too fast, so keep it short – ideally up to one minute.  

Ensure you have some intonation and that you’re not rambling. Be aware of our body language. You should be approachable without being overbearing – don’t frown, don’t slouch.

As with any public speaking, it is a good idea to have something practised and polished that can be adapted on the spot to suit the audience or individual you are talking to.

Dos and don’ts for personal statements

  • Do highlight what sets you apart.
  • Do make it relevant – tailor to the person or role in question.
  • Do be specific (on what can you offer) and succinct (two-three sentences).
  • Do make it engaging – think about your hook.
  • Do be passionate.
  • Don’t be negative.
  • Don’t exaggerate or embellish.

Your personal statement helps the employer to assess your suitability for a job role . Although your resume accounts for your career experience and qualifications, it says nothing about who you are. The personal statement enables you to highlight why you are the best fit for the position. Including a personal statement in your resume will make you stand out. And give the recruiter the notion that you’ll be the best person to work with. 

Why the Civil Service Requests Personal Statements

When a vacancy is advertised, employers provide a job description that enumerates the job’s important criteria, responsibilities, and desirable skills. 

If put into proper use, your statement is ideal for aligning what you can offer to the organization with the job details. A well-articulated statement will show that your skills and personality fit the available role. It is only by your statement that your recruiter confirms if you are eligible for the position or not.

Things to consider when Writing a Personal Statement?

  • Your personal statement should not be less than 500 words or more than 750 words. Keep it brief and concise. State only essential details and leave out those things that are important. You should properly edit your written statement despite the word count.
  • Ensure that you’re well-prepared. Adequate preparation is essential, and a great tip is to take the vital criteria and group them under common themes. 
  • Write at most a hundred words underneath a point. Your first draft may exceed the word count, but you should remove unnecessary information and retain the essential ones.
  • Before you write your statement, outline how you’ll go about it. Then, as you write, weave these ideas into your text and link them to specific examples that prove your success.
  • Be bold in talking about your capabilities. You don’t have to exaggerate facts or boast about your achievements. Mention your great qualities and outline your strengths. 

How to Introduce Yourself in a Personal Statement?

Your opening paragraph will either gain or lose the attention of the employers. And that is why you need to introduce yourself properly, as this will determine your success.

There are two things you should do:

  • Provide a personal profile. State only important information, like your years of experience, your strength, and anything else relevant.
  • State your reasons for applying. Explain how relevant your skills and experiences are to the role. You can also narrate what inspired you to be a part of the Civil Service.

As someone with a strong interest in public policy, I am keen to pursue a career in the civil service. The challenge of working within a complex and ever-changing environment is something that appeals to me. And the Civil Service offers unrivaled opportunities for professional development. 

Through my academic studies, I have developed expertise in political analysis and policymaking processes. This I hope to apply in a practical setting during my career. My previous work experience has given me an insight into the realities of working in government. This will stand me in good stead should I successfully secure a role within the Civil Service.

I have a proven track record in delivering results and thrive in busy, fast-paced environments that require hard work, teamwork, and accountability. In my previous role as an auditor for the government of Alberta, I developed strong analytical skills and critical thinking abilities. My experience has also taught me how to communicate effectively with people at all levels within an organization. 

With my combination of skills and abilities, I would be an excellent candidate for a position in civil service. I am committed to delivering high-quality services that meet the needs of everyone, and my skills and experience would be valuable in this environment. I would be a valuable asset to your team and can provide tangible results in any role you appoint me to.

What's a personal statement, and why do you need one when you're job searching? A job search personal statement is a place to share why you're interested in a position and why you're a good match.

In your statement, you can get a bit personal—use the space to share details and insights about yourself, and forge a connection with potential employers. Here are some tips on how to write a successful personal statement that will further your job search.

A personal statement may be included in your curriculum vitae  or CV. Much like an in-person elevator speech or the summary section within a resume, a CV personal statement highlights your objectives and abilities. Since a CV may stretch over several pages, this allows you to showcase must-see details from within the document. You'll want to write just a few sentences for a personal statement in a CV.  

Or, you may need to write a personal statement as part of a job application. This helps hiring managers to separate out candidates applying for every job in a category (e.g., putting in applications for any "production manager" position) from more engaged candidates, who are interested in the company.

Write something that matches the application's requested word count; if one isn't provided, aim for 250 to 500 words. Regardless of where it appears, your goal in a personal statement is the same: try to connect your background and goals with the job at hand.

In your personal statement, you want to make a connection between yourself and the position. Think of this as a three-part process:

  • Share Some Details About Yourself: Who are you? You may say things like "Highly seasoned production manager" or "Recent graduate with honors."
  • Highlight Your Most Relevant Experience and Talents and Share What You'd Bring to the Company: Think: "Strong, speedy writer capable of crafting ad copy that engages and enchants." or "In my years as a project manager, I've never let a detail slip; I've won internal awards for the best team player. My projects release on time and match requested specifications."
  • Provide a Bit of Information About Your Career Goals: For instance, "Looking for a staff writer position" or "Eager for placement in a mid-sized firm as an audit supervisor" or "Seeking a position as a production assistant to further develop my skills in television and put my time management abilities to the test."

While it's called a personal statement, avoid over-sharing. Only include information that's relevant to the job at hand. That is if you're applying for a position as an accountant, no need to mention your goal of becoming a staff writer at a magazine.

Remember, the main goal of your personal statement is for it to further your job search.

Your personal statement should always be personalized—it's a mistake to reuse the same personal statement for every job you apply for. You don't need to write the personal statement from scratch each time—just make tweaks so it reflects the needs of the company and the qualities requested in the job description.

Here are more tips for writing a successful job search personal statement:

  • Know Your Audience: Target your personal statement to a specific job position and company. Spend a bit of time researching the company to get a sense of what they're looking for in a candidate. Decode the job description so you understand the company's needs in a candidate. Take notes on where your qualifications are a good match for the position.
  • Make Some Lists: What have you done that employers should know about? Make a list of your accomplishments (and keep in mind that while splashy awards are important, so too is reorganizing a chaotic system that gives everyone hives to make it user-friendly). Brainstorm a list of your talents as well as your soft, communication, and general skills.
  • Go Long on Your First Draft—Then Cut It Down: Hopefully, your time spent thinking about the company's needs and what you have to offer has given you plenty of fodder to get started writing your personal statement. At this point, don't worry about length; write as much you want. Then, go back and edit—aim for a few sentences for a CV and around 250 to 500 words in an application. Cut unnecessary words and clichés that don't add meaning. Instead, use action verbs . While it's fine to write in the first person, avoid overusing the word "I." Try to vary the composition of sentences.
  • Make It Targeted: You have lots of skills and interests and work experience. What you want to emphasize in one position is not necessarily what you want to highlight in another. If you are qualified as both a writer and an editor, choose which talent to call out in your personal statement—and make it the one that's most relevant to the job you want.

Here are some examples of personal statements to use as inspiration:

  • I'm a seasoned accountant with CPA and CMA certification and more than 10 years of experience working in large firms. Oversaw audits and a department of ten. My positive attitude and detail-oriented spirit help ensure that month-end financial wrap-ups go smoothly and without any inaccuracies or fire drills. Looking for a leadership role in my next position.
  • Recent college graduate with freelance writing experience at major print magazines as well as online outlets and the college newspaper. A strong writer who always meets deadlines, and matches the company tone and voice. In search of a staff writer position and eager to learn the magazine trade from the ground up.
  • I'm an award-winning designer in children's clothes looking to make the transition to adult athletic year. At Company X, I developed a new line for toddlers and traveled to Asia to oversee production. I'm a fast learner and am eager for a new challenge in the growing field of athleisure.

Completing your Personal Statement

The purpose of a personal statement is to showcase your relevant skills and experience against the job requirements.

Requirements are often referred to as the person specification or essential criteria.

The statement is your opportunity to give evidenced examples of how you fit the requirement and why you should get the job.

The following steps may help you tailor your skills and experience to the role you are applying for. You can:

  • stick to the word limit: a brief statement won’t provide the evidence needed to allow your application to be assessed fully. There will generally be a set word limit and we encourage you to produce as close to that number as possible to provide the required depth of detail and evidence
  • use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) model as a basis for your answers. Think about what was needed, what you did and how you did it, what happened and what the outcome was
  • develop a draft offline first, so you can check your spelling and grammar
  • re-read the requirement, then read it again, to make sure you completely understand what is being looked for
  • seek a second opinion to check that what you have written is clear and answers the questions posed by the requirement
  • read it again, to make sure you are happy with it and your relevant skills and experience are clearly evidenced, before you upload it and submit

Government personal statement example.

On a vacation to the Krak des Chevaliers and Palmyra in the Syrian Desert, I witnessed the rich culture of the Middle Eastern people. This region is generally perceived by western democracies as a constant source of political and social turmoil. This may be true for the most part; however, many areas in the region are as modern and peaceful as any western nation.

Further to being raised in a multi-cultural family with a Beirut-born father of Palestinian, Syrian and Armenian heritage and a Maltese mother, I have developed a strong interest in foreign cultures. Therefore, I believe that Political Science will be the most appropriate and applicable course to pursue given both my personal background and interests.

As one of Canada’s most cosmopolitan cities, my native Toronto attracts many foreigners: some are looking for better living conditions and job opportunities; others are on exchange to learn English and benefit from higher education. As a child growing up in this vibrant city, I would look forward to my family housing exchange students. This rewarding experience prompted me to volunteer at summer camps, where I taught ESL to students from 6 to 18 years of age.

My many encounters and experiences with foreign cultures have nourished my passion for travel. This was fostered by my parents who, three years ago, decided to move our family to the Turks and Caicos Islands, a small but rapidly developing country in the Northern Caribbean. Many deprived nations in the region, such as Haiti, have seen their people immigrate to the TCI, whose economic stability has been underpinned by many of these immigrants who have undertaken most of the menial work necessary for a flourishing economy. However, I have too often witnessed many of these workers being the victims of exploitation and discrimination.

During an internship at the Magistrate’s Court in the summer of 2008, I personally marshalled the Court Magistrate and took a particular interest in Immigration Law and the consequences of working in a country illegally. Further to working at the courts, I interned at a law firm, where I was given the opportunity to shadow lawyers at the Labour Tribunal and see, first-hand, the exploitation of workers, and their employers' disregard for labour laws.

After successfully completing my IGCSE's, I have enjoyed the challenge of Advanced level studies in Geography, History, Business Studies and English Literature. As a young Geographer, I have attended local conferences, such as the symposium, “Fostering a Green Culture”, with former US vice-president, Al Gore, as the main speaker on the contentious topic of climate change.

My perception of how environmental issues affect all aspects of human welfare was reinforced when I was selected to spend a day with the Minister of Natural Resources. Last September, I was able to further develop my knowledge of local environmental issues, as I witnessed the impact of hurricane Ike on the welfare of residents and the economy.

At school, I eagerly participate in many social activities. I particularly enjoy being a mentor to younger students, whom I advise and tutor whenever needed. I have been able to further develop both my leadership and communication skills, as I was selected as Deputy Head Boy by the Principal and elected House Captain by my peers.

Being a team player is vital to me. I have tried to do so by being an active member of the Yorkland swim team, trumpeter in the school orchestral band, Senior Editor of the yearbook and the Current Events Editor of the school newspaper. As a result, my enthusiasm and dependability within the school were rewarded when I received the "Top Student in Year 12" award, an achievement that I hope to repeat in my final year of A-Levels.

I hope this presents to you a well-rounded student, equipped with the skills necessary to succeed at university. I look forward to being introduced to new academic and social challenges as well as experiencing European culture.

Thinking of working at ICS digital – tips for applying

I’m going share with you some of my tips on how to apply for a job in the Civil Service, hopefully helping you apply for some of the fantastic opportunities we have available in ICS Digital.

Joining the Civil Service

The Civil Service recruits using a process called Success Profiles. This is just a different way of looking at candidates that means we can assess your application with a wider lens. It takes your transferable skills into account, rather than just your direct work experience.

Transferable skills for digital roles can be assessed through looking at things such as what you do at work, your abilities and potential abilities, and your strengths.

The Government Digital and Data profession

Roles that are part of the Digital and Data profession in the Civil Service have a defined set of skills outlined by the Profession Capability Framework .

Roles on the framework will have a list of skills needed to work in each role and a brief description of what they mean. We are transparent about the skills required for each role so you can be confident that you are applying for a job that matches your skills.

For example, a Data Analyst will require the skill of data management – understanding data sources, data organisation and data storage. You can see how the same role uses the same skills at different levels at www.gov.uk/guidance/data-analyst .

Tips on applying for a digital job

1) keep a bank of examples.

I have a section at the back of my note pad where I jot down things I do at work that make me think “this would be a great interview example”.

We have all been there when we are writing a job application or sitting in an interview and struggle to think of a good example - even though we know we have done this task hundreds or even thousands of times!

Keeping a log of these is a fail-safe way to look back and reflect on the good work you have done, and then pick the best examples for your application or interview.

You can look at skills required for your role in the profession framework and use these skills as the skeleton for your example bank.

2) Personal statement

Most of our applications will require a personal statement. You might also see it called a cover letter or suitability statement.

When writing a statement, tailor it to the role you are applying for. The best way to tailor your statement is to address each essential skill outlined on the job advertisement and let us know how your transferable skills and/or experience make you the right person for the role.

I have read many amazing personal statements during my time as a recruiter, I love to hear all about the amazing skills and experience people have. However, personal statements that are curated and address the skills outlined on the job advert stand out.

3) Essential skills

When looking at a job advert or writing a personal statement or CV you should always look through the essential skills and explain how you can demonstrate these.

It might surprise you that a role maybe two grades above you can be a great match based on essential skills. This has happened to me before - it was great to be assessed on my skills rather than my “time in role”.

4) STAR method

The STAR method is a way of structuring the examples you give at interview. It stands for Situation, Tasks, Action and Results.

It’s a fantastic way to articulate an example in a clear and concise way allowing those on the interview panel to easily mark how you have addressed the question.

Do I need a college degree to work in the federal government?

Policy changes in hiring may boost prospects for job seekers.

In recent years employers have started to question which jobs should require a college diploma.

The idea of a college degree being a necessary asset for job seekers began during the 1980s according to research conducted at Harvard Business School. In a 2017 report , researchers found this “degree inflation” resulted in a “degree gap” where people working jobs that now required college degrees didn’t have a degree themselves. Managers searching for candidates with digital skills and social abilities were biased toward college graduates, according to Joseph Fuller, one of the report’s authors.

Then a tight labor market after 2017 and a growing emphasis on diversity in the workplace sparked a reversal. “Sixty percent of the population doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree. This is disproportionately people of color,” said Kerry McKittrick, a co-director of the Harvard Project on Workforce. “And so removing degree requirements can open up opportunities to a lot of people.”

The federal government, the largest employer in the United States with almost 3 million employees, listened. Both the Trump and Biden administrations have recently revised degree requirements on federal jobs. Following a 2020 executive order from President Trump to remove education requirements from many federal jobs, The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) released skill-based hiring guidelines to federal agencies in May 2022.

Kara Merendo, 61, began federal service 43 years ago while she was still in high school. Her grandmother and mentor, Katherine Conaway, had worked for 30 years in human resources at the Watervliet Arsenal, an Army facility in Watervliet, N.Y.

“It’s just the work that you do, the people that you meet, the mentors that you have that help you grow and develop and, you know, strengthen your leadership skills,” Merendo says as she retires as director of the Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) equal employment opportunity and affirmative employment office. “I don’t have the college education, but I have the life-lived experiences.”

Mendy Frank, 52, also emphasized the importance of life experience in her career — saying that applicants never know what parts of their life transfer into job skills. In 2010, Frank became the first person to get a job through the Military Spouses Act at the Department of Transportation. Originally from Dallas, she married at age 18 and moved several times with her two children before landing in D.C. She now works as an administrative officer in Transportation’s Office of Safety — and went from a GS-7 salary level to a GS-13 over her career.

For citizens looking for a career in the federal government, USAjobs.gov is the hub: On average, 1,288 jobs are posted to the website each day and the OPM estimates there are 28,438 jobs open at any given time. Job listings will include the level of education required or equivalent experience, plus a ranking by general schedule (GS) pay scale , where jobs are given a number that corresponds with salary and job level.

Jobs at a GS-4 level and below typically don’t require a college degree, while jobs above that level may require a degree or “specialized experience,” said Michelle Brown, a division director in the Office of Recruitment and Advisory Services at the Department of Energy.

On April 12 the Biden administration expanded the federal internship program — called the Pathways Program — to “qualifying career or technical education programs,” such as registered apprenticeship programs, Job Corps, AmeriCorps or Peace Corps.

“Policies changing like the federal government’s, both the administrations, you know, those are steps in the path of righteousness,” Fuller said. “But you have to do more than just change the policy to get anything other than a marginal outcome.”

A February report written by a team from Harvard and the Burning Glass Institute warned that changes in policy weren’t producing a significant difference in hiring practices in the private sector. Data has yet to show what impact policy changes are having in the federal government.

After he graduated from high school in 1993, Tim Howe, 50, changed plans to attend junior college and at age 19 joined the Marines. Over the next 14 years, he worked as a combat engineer — a team that focuses on demolitions — and traveled to 32 countries. Now the public affairs officer with VHA’s Office of Workforce, Management and Consulting , Howe earns a six-figure salary in a GS-14 level job. Last year, as part of his job, Howe mentored young people and brought them into federal service through volunteerism.

Washing hands can keep you healthy and prevent the spread of respiratory and diarrheal infections. Germs can spread from person to person or from surfaces to people when you:

  • Touch surfaces or objects that have germs on them
  • Blow your nose, cough, or sneeze into hands and then touch other people's hands or common objects

Key times to wash hands

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before and after eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage

How it works

Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Follow these five steps every time.

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds . Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or an air dryer.

Use hand sanitizer when you can't use soap and water

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. You can tell if the sanitizer contains at least 60% alcohol by looking at the product label.

FACT SHEET: Biden- ⁠ Harris Administration Unveils Critical Steps to Protect Workers from Risks of Artificial Intelligence

Since taking office, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the entire Biden-Harris Administration have moved with urgency to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to spur innovation and advance opportunity, while also taking action to ensure workers share in these gains. As part of these efforts, President Biden’s landmark Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence directed the Department of Labor to establish a set of key principles that protect workers and ensure they have a seat at the table in determining how these technologies are developed and used. The Biden-Harris Administration is today unveiling these principles and announcing that technology companies Microsoft and Indeed have committed to adopt these principles as appropriate to their workplace.

Pursuant to President Biden’s landmark Executive Order, the following principles apply to the development and deployment of AI systems in the workplace:

  • Centering Worker Empowerment : Workers and their representatives, especially those from underserved communities, should be informed of and have genuine input in the design, development, testing, training, use, and oversight of AI systems for use in the workplace.
  • Ethically Developing AI : AI systems should be designed, developed, and trained in a way that protects workers.
  • Establishing AI Governance and Human Oversight : Organizations should have clear governance systems, procedures, human oversight, and evaluation processes for AI systems for use in the workplace.
  • Ensuring Transparency in AI Use : Employers should be transparent with workers and job seekers about the AI systems that are being used in the workplace.
  • Protecting Labor and Employment Rights : AI systems should not violate or undermine workers’ right to organize, health and safety rights, wage and hour rights, and anti-discrimination and anti-retaliation protections.
  • Using AI to Enable Workers: AI systems should assist, complement, and enable workers, and improve job quality.
  • Supporting Workers Impacted by AI : Employers should support or upskill workers during job transitions related to AI.
  • Ensuring Responsible Use of Worker Data: Workers’ data collected, used, or created by AI systems should be limited in scope and location, used only to support legitimate business aims, and protected and handled responsibly.

These principles should be considered during the whole lifecycle of AI – from design to development, testing, training, deployment and use, oversight, and auditing. The principles are applicable to all sectors and intended to be mutually reinforcing, though not all principles will apply to the same extent in every industry or workplace. The principles are not intended to be an exhaustive list but instead a guiding framework for businesses. AI developers and employers should review and customize the best practices based on their own context and with input from workers. The Administration welcomes additional commitments from other technology companies who wish to adopt these principles.
