Logical reasoning tests are a type of psychometric test used to measure your problem-solving skills. They come in various forms, but all have the underlying purpose of assessing your logical aptitude and your ability to draw conclusions from a given set of information.

What is a logical reasoning test?

A logical reasoning test is an assessment that measures your ability to interpret information, apply logic to solve problems and draw relevant conclusions. It is typically non-verbal and in a multiple-choice format, and requires the use of rules and deduction to reach answers, rather than prior knowledge.

That said, logical reasoning is actually an umbrella term for multiple types of assessment, and you may find you’re asked to take any one of the following five test types as part of a job application.

Deductive reasoning

Commonly presented as a series of word problems, deductive reasoning tests require you to apply top-down-logic; that is, you must draw the right conclusion from a set of given premises.

Typically, you’ll be presented with a short paragraph, or stimulus, detailing an argument, scenario or a number of stated facts, and a set of possible answers. Only one of these answers can be true, based on the evidence provided.

You may also be given a conclusive statement and asked to decide if it is true or false, or if there’s insufficient information to conclude either way.

Inductive reasoning

Unlike deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning tests ask you to make general inferences – probable conclusions based on a set of information, rather than unquestionable outcomes.

This is most often done through the use of shapes, patterns, sequences and diagrams.

You’ll need to quickly identify relationships and rules, then apply these to find the most logical answer from the multiple-choice options. This could be identifying the odd one out, filling in the missing part of a pattern, or finding the next part of a sequence.

Diagrammatic reasoning

Similar to inductive reasoning, diagrammatic reasoning tests offer visual representations of a problem and require you to make logical connections to draw a conclusion.

Questions often take the form of a diagram with inputs and outputs, and you’ll be required to select which processes from a list of operators would achieve the documented effect.

You may also be presented with sets of abstract sequences, given a standalone visual, and asked to select which set it belongs to.

Abstract reasoning

Abstract reasoning tests are essentially inductive and/or diagrammatic reasoning tests under another name.

They too require you to find relationships and rules between visual sequences, then apply these to select the correct image from multiple options, be it a missing part or a continuation of the sequence in question.

Critical reasoning

Critical reasoning tests are more akin to deductive reasoning tests, in that you’ll be dealing with word-based scenarios, arguments, evidence and conclusions.

These tests tend to evaluate a range of skills. Argument analysis is common, in which a question is posed, and a yes/no answer given with a supporting statement. You’ll need to decide whether the statement is a strong or weak argument.

Other question types involve scenarios and statements from which you’ll be asked to make assumptions, deductions and inferences based on the evidence provided.

Critical reasoning tests are most commonly used in sectors where evidence-based judgement is an everyday requirement, such as law.

Why do employers use logical reasoning tests?

As with any form of psychometric assessment, employers use logical reasoning tests as a way to filter applicants, most commonly in the pre-interview stages of selection.

Logic forms a fundamental part of day-to-day decision making. Our reasoning capabilities determine how effectively we interpret the world around us, and how we use what we know to be fact to inform our choices. As such, logical reasoning is a vital part of many job functions.

In administering a logical reasoning test, employers are evaluating how well you’re likely to perform tasks like strategy development, risk assessment and forecasting, as well as general problem solving.

Additionally, the ability to quickly discern patterns, understand complex relationships, and make logical deductions underpins successful innovation and creative problem-solving in dynamic work environments. Thus, logical reasoning tests also serve as a method for assessing a candidate’s potential to contribute to innovative solutions and strategic thinking in their prospective role.

Common logical reasoning test publishers

Below are listed five of the most widely used publishers of logical reasoning tests, each of which has its own approach to this type of assessment.

SHL publishes and administers both inductive and deductive reasoning tests, the lengths of which vary depending on the level of role applied for. Typically though, they last no longer than 25 minutes and follow a standard format.

Kenexa’s logical reasoning test focuses on inductive or abstract reasoning, with candidates required to assess and manipulate shapes and sequences. It also has a deductive reasoning test, which it refers to as verbal reasoning.

Cut-e offers both inductive and deductive reasoning tests, with individual variations of each. The layout of Cut-e’s tests is known to be somewhat different to other publishers, so if you’re taking one be sure to practice specifically for this format.

As one of the best-known publishers of psychometric and aptitude assessments, Saville’s logical reasoning tests are widely used. They’re offered as either abstract or diagrammatic reasoning and have a time limit of around 20 to 25 minutes.

Logical reasoning tests from Talent Q are adaptive, which means the difficulty rating of a question is related to your performance on the question prior. Do well initially, and they’ll get harder. Struggle, and they’ll become a little easier.

How to prepare for logical reasoning tests

The best way to prepare for a logical reasoning test of any description is to train your brain to think more critically – and that means practice.

Try making puzzles a part of your daily routine or use brain-training apps in your downtime. If you’re preparing for a deductive or critical thinking test , take an analytical approach to reading the daily news. Instead of simply taking things on face value, ask yourself questions based on the evidence provided, and whether or not it’s enough to draw solid conclusions.

And make sure you take plenty of practice tests. This will help you understand how to answer logical reasoning tests , and will make you familiar with many of the common relationships found in abstract sequences, including orientation, shading, rotations and reflections.

If you’re struggling to identify relevant rules, work backwards from the answer. The better you understand where and how certain rules apply, the more picking them out will become second nature.

As you progress with your practice tests, start taking them under exam conditions, including setting yourself a time limit. Pacing is a key skill in logical reasoning tests, as your score will not only indicate how many correct answers you gave, but how long it took you to answer each question. Using deductive reasoning, the only logical answer is 3. To get to this answer, you need to simplify the given facts. All famous sports players are footballers, and all footballers are fit and healthy.

  • We can’t deduce that all footballers are famous sports people, as we haven’t got that information.
  • We can’t deduce that all famous people are fit and healthy, because the fact is about famous sports people.
  • This is the logical answer.
  • This information is not given; all footballers are fit and healthy but we can’t logically link that all fit and healthy people are footballers.
  • This is obviously incorrect, as gender is not mentioned at all in the question.

The number of triangles is increasing by 2 as you move along the sequence. I you continue to add 2 until you reach the 6th shape you reach 14, so the answer is C).

In the question the key rule is that the number of ‘star’ shapes in the central column must always equal the number of double circle shapes.

If there are no star shapes there should be no circle shapes. If there are three star shapes, there should be three circle shapes. Option F is the only one that abides by this rule.

Please note: shapes are not in a set position within this sequence. It is merely the presence of the shapes that is important. 1. There are always two squares in the frame. 2. There are always two circles in the frame. 3. There is always one triangle in the frame. So the answer is D).

In general, psychometric reasoning tests challenge users to answer a series of questions and compare their performance on a test with the average performance level of a reference or ‘norm’ group.

This is typically made up of individual with similar characteristics, such as education level, nationality or workplace seniority.

If you do better than most of the norm group you will receive a high score, whereas a low score suggests that your performance was weaker than most of the norm group.

Usually, a minimum standard of performance necessary for success in a role is identified at the start of an assessment process, and all candidates that don’t meet this level will be unable to progress through the process.

What makes Capp Assessment Tests Different?

Capp Assessments are ‘Next Generation’ psychometric aptitude tests ; this means they might look and feel a bit different to other psychometric tests you have completed in the past.

The main difference between the Capp tests and more traditional psychometric ability tests is that the Capp tests are responsive.

This means that the actual questions presented to a candidate will depend upon their performance on the previous questions.

Capp say that the responsiveness of their tests and the size of their question bank mean that the chances of two candidates taking exactly the same test is currently less than one in a billion .

In practice, this means that if you’ve been able to quickly and accurately solve the previous questions, you can expect to be presented with incrementally more challenging questions.

By contrast, if you have made a number of errors, the test will present questions at a lower level.

The aim of the tests is to work out what your maximum ability is. Or put another way, what the most challenging level you are capable of working at is.

Another thing that makes Capp Tests feel different is that they have no time limit (although the time you take to complete the test does effect the score so you still need to work as quickly as you can).

This takes a bit of the pressure off and can make taking these tests rather less stressful than others.

Finally, the variety of question types and the format of the questions in Capp Tests can be different to those used by more traditional test publishers.

Traditionally numerical reasoning tests require candidates to select the correct answer from a number of potential options.

The Capp numerical reasoning test still does this, but it also requires candidates to rank potential answers or to type their answer into a free-text box.

  • Verbal Reasoning Tests

Verbal reasoning tests typically give you a passage of text to read and then ask you whether a number of subsequent statements are true or false, based on the information contained in the passage.

Inferences are the basic building blocks of logical reasoning, and there are strict rules governing what counts as a valid inference and what doesn’t — it’s a lot like math, but applied to sentences rather than numbers.

If there is someone at the door, the dog will bark.

Assuming this sentence holds true, there are some other sentences that must also be true.

  • If the dog didn’t bark, there is no one at the door.
  • Just because the dog barked doesn’t mean there’s someone at the door.

There are also a few sentences that are probably true, such as:

  • The dog can sense (hear or smell) when someone is at the door.
  • The dog belongs to the people who live in the house where the door is located.

II. Types of Logical Reasoning

There are two basic types of logic, each defined by its own type of inference. They correspond to the two categories in the example from section 1.

  • Deduction is when the conclusion, based on the premises, must be true. For example, if it’s true that the dog always barks when someone is at the door and it’s true that there’s someone at the door, then it must be true that the dog will bark. Of course, the real world is messy and doesn’t always conform to the strictures of deductive reasoning (there are probably no actual dogs who always bark when someone’s at the door), but deductive reasoning is still important in fields like law, engineering, and science, where strict truths still hold. All math is deductive.
  • Induction is when the conclusion, based on the premises, is probably The answers are less definitive than they are in deductive reasoning, but they are often more useful. Induction is our only way of predicting what will happen in the future: we look at the way things are, and the way they have been in the past, and we make an educated guess about what will probably happen. But all predictions are based on probability, not certainty: for example, it’s extremely probable that the sun will rise tomorrow morning. But it’s not certain , since there are all sorts of catastrophes that could happen in between now and then.

III. Logical Reasoning vs. Critical Thinking

Logic is one of the main pillars of critical thinking . And there’s no question that critical thinking would be impossible without some understanding of logical reasoning. However, there are many other skills involved in critical thinking, such as:

  • Empathy , or the ability to imagine what someone else is feeling or experiencing. This is a crucial skill for critical thinking, since it allows you to broaden your perspective and reflect on your actions and beliefs. Empathy also makes you a better student of philosophy because it enables you to put yourself in the author’s shoes and understand the argument from within.
  • Analogy , or noticing similarities and thinking them through. Analogies allow us to draw conclusions about, for example, the similarity between our own time and some moment in history, and thus try to make better decisions in the future. This skill is closely related to inductive logic.
  • Creativity . Critical thinking is all about innovative problem-solving and coming up with new ideas, so it’s heavily dependent on creativity. Just like a creative art, critical thinking depends on assembling old parts in new ways, working inventively within constraints, and matching moments of inspiration with hours of rigorous craft.

“I am convinced that the act of thinking logically cannot possibly be natural to the human mind. If it were, then mathematics would be everybody’s easiest course at school and our species would not have taken several millennia to figure out the scientific method.” (Neil Degrasse Tyson)

Neil Degrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist and TV personality who passionately advocates for science and critical thinking. In this quote, he suggests that science and logical reasoning are inherently difficult tasks for the human mind, an organ that evolved to perform a very different set of tasks under very different conditions from the ones we live in today.

“Logic takes care of itself; all we have to do is to look and see how it does it.” (Ludwig Wittgenstein)

Wittgenstein was probably the most influential philosopher of the 20th century, but his views changed dramatically over the course of his life, leading to some controversy as to what he actually thought. This quote is a good example. Early on, Wittgenstein believed that logical reasoning was autonomous — that logical truth was an objective truth, out there in the world for anyone to see if they knew how to look. Later on, though, Wittgenstein started to believe that culture and nature influence the way we see logic, and that logic is therefore not perfectly objective. It’s a tricky question, whether logical reasoning is universal or cultural — it must be tricky if a genius like Wittgenstein couldn’t make up his mind on it!

IV. The History and Importance of Logical Reasoning

Logic is a universal part of the human experience — agriculture would be impossible without inductive reasoning about weather and sunlight, and construction would be impossible without mathematics and deductive reasoning about what makes a structure sturdy.

Formalized logic has appeared in several places with more or less similar results. The Greek philosopher Aristotle is credited with being the first to develop a formal system of logical reasoning, but there were already people in India and China working on formal logic long before Aristotle was born. The Indian, Chinese, and Greek systems were all remarkably similar in their rules, which suggests that there may have been some mutual influence despite the distance. Traders and travelling scholars may have brought ideas about logical reasoning with them all over the world, allowing for rapid development of new ideas.

Logic may seem like a stuffy, abstract discipline used only by philosophers and lawyers, but it has had a profound influence on the history of science and technology as well. Alan Turing, the inventor of the modern computer, was a logician rather than a tinkerer or engineer, and his famous “Turing Machine” was a product of his rigorous training in formal logical reasoning.

V. Logical reasoning in Popular Culture

“Vulcanians do not speculate. I speak from pure logic.” (Spock, Star Trek )

Mr. Spock was raised on Vulcan and trained to be perfectly rational, ignoring all emotion and concentrating on logical reasoning instead. This represents a widespread trope in popular culture — that logic and the emotions are at odds with each other (the head pulling one way and the heart pulling in another). But there’s no reason why logic and the emotions have to be enemies. Uncontrolled emotion certainly clouds logical reasoning — it’s difficult to think rationally if you’re in a rage, for example — but many traditions argue that logic and the emotions should be partners rather than rivals, each providing its own sort of insight in harmony with the other.

On Sherlock , the great detective Sherlock Holmes has a website called “The Art of Deduction,” in which he explains his methods for solving crimes. However, the website has the wrong name — nearly all of Sherlock’s inferences are inductive rather than deductive. That is, they bring together bits and pieces of evidence to develop a theory about what probably happened in a particular crime. They’re not based on the kind of logical certainty that we saw in section 1, but rather on reasoning about likelihoods and probabilities. It’s always logically possible that Sherlock could have it wrong, even though that rarely seems to happen.

Inductive reasoning tests most often involve identifying relationships between a sequence of shapes to determine the next in the sequence. 

Good to know: This question style is very similar to a typical logical reasoning test question as we have covered so far.

Unlike a traditional logical reasoning test , inductive tests may also ask you to pick which shape in a series of shapes is the odd one out. As an example, the SHL Verify G+ tests often include ‘Odd One Out’ questions.

Deductive Reasoning Tests 

Deductive Reasoning tests require you to engage with the information provided to answer based on what would make the most sense logically. There may be some basic numerical and/or verbal reasoning involved too with these questions.

For example : In the below SHL example, you will be required to use the team schedule provided to determine the best and earliest time for a team meeting which all members will be available to attend.

Diagrammatic Reasoning tests often involve a complex sequence of diagrams or shapes and require you to select an answer to complete a diagram or sequence of figures. You will need to first identify the underlying pattern or rules to do this. 

For example : You may be required to determine which figure can be added to the other figures to form a resulting structure. For this question, you must identify the shared pattern across each of the other figures to determine which option matches this pattern and best fits the structure.

Abstract reasoning tests measure your ability to reason with more abstract sequences of shapes, figures or numbers. The most commonly used abstract question involves determining which shape of 4-5 options completes a sequence. You will be required to find the pattern used to determine the missing shape in the sequence.

Critical reasoning tests closely resemble verbal reasoning tests but may be used interchangeably with logical tests in rare circumstances. You will be measured on your ability to solve problems and make decisions based on information provided in a passage of text. In the assessment, you must determine whether a series of statements are: True, an assumption, or strong/weak arguments.

For example : You may be provided with a short passage of information and be required to determine whether the following 4-5 conclusions ‘Follow’ or ‘Do not follow’ this passage. Ensure to only base your answer on the information provided.
